SCOOP Pontiac Stardust opens in retro style

The Pontiac Stardust, a new bar and restaurant on Jalan Petitenget, opened with a gala show last Saturday night. Most of the Seminyak luminaries were in attendance doing what they do best; guzzling down the freebies and foraging amongst the morsels. (No, there was plenty for all) We have to give credit to the designers, EDG, and the Hong Kong and Singapore based owners for a well thought-out space, both indoor and outdoor, with an excellent dining concept and cocktails designed by the first female mixologist to win the prestigious 42 Below Cocktail World Cup, Beckaly Franks. The Pontiac Stardust design gives a nod to the cosmic road trip thru 1950’s/60’s Palm Springs, USA. From the vintage photo booth, to the fairy lit Teepee under the stars on the patio and the funky mid-century styled music room where DJs pump out an eclectic mix of music, Pontiac Stardust is about fun, hope, dreams planned and dreams fulfilled in a space of grand retro style. The place has got something for everyone. Give Pontiac a spin next you are in Petitenget.

Zero Waste to Oceans Conference & Debate The annual Zero Waste to Oceans Conference is commencing on Friday, June 14th and there are limited seats available! The subject of 2019’s conference and debate is; “are corporations responsible for their single use plastic collection and recycling?”, what do you think? There will be a number of guest speakers from all over the island and registration on the day starts at 3pm. According to the organisers, the ban on plastic bags is good, but the poor waste management of 280 Desas (Councils) and 700 Banjars (Sub-Councils) across Bali, who are responsible for 95% of the islands Solid and Liquid Waste Management has gone nowhere, or has actually become worse. 5,000 cubic meters a day leaks slowly into the oceans, 100,000 cubic meters a day from Indonesia and 600,000 cubics a day from all of South East Asia. If we don’t start to take action soon, it might be too late to save our oceans and mother earth. For more information please contact rama@rolefoundation.org.

SCOOP This Is Life Festival - Gili Air This Is Life is a 24-hour music festival set to take place on Gili Air from 4pm on July 20 to 4pm on July 21, 2019. The musical offering includes a diverse spread of minimal, house, techno, and psychedelic trance; uniting all party flavors across the board into a single dose. The festival aims to produce a unique musical and cultural experience, bringing people from all walks of life together as one big family. The festival has been designed to emulate the Australian doof scene with a blend of exotic island spirit to spice things up. This Is Life invites partygoers to get lost in the coconut trees, crystal clear waters, pristine white-sand beaches, as they dance under the warm Indonesian sunshine. It’s all about music and love and enjoying the simple life that Gili Air has to offer— there are no motorized vehicles on the island, only bicycles and horse and cart. Places are limited so be sure to head to their website to cop tickets as soon as possible. Prices for locals and foreigners will vary. Proceeds from ticket sales will be used to invest in the welfare of the local community.

Gypsy Land Festival Gypsy Land, makes its highlyanticipated return this July 13 & 14, 2019 at the 66 Courtyard in Seminyak. The two-day techno doof has proved itself in a different class of savagery and debauchery on the island’s party scene. The magic lies in the interactive immersive environment where fantasy meets reality. Engross yourself in two opposing realms, the Wonderlands or the Badlands, where set and costume design is impeccable and non-music entertainment is almost unbelievable. Headline artists Francesca Lombardo & Ramon Tapia amongst other top DJs will be on deck to provide a sinister soundtrack while you live out all your sinful desires. The entertainment is virtually endless, from caged MMA fights, a skatepark, ferris wheel, bull riding, motorcycle of death, a flying fox and so much more. The dress code is Mad Max or Alice in Wonderland. Tickets are available at retail locations in Seminyak and Canggu as well as on their website gypsy.land.

Westseven headlines next Escape

With a recent signing to Anjunadeep, productions out on Bedrock, Click, City Fox and What I Play and his music being played by the likes of Jody Wisternoff, John Digweed, Hernan Catenneo, Kolsch and Joris Voorn to name a few, 2019 is set to be another buster year for Westseven. 2017 saw the birth of his own imprint, Soul De Anima, and look out, he is set to play the next Escape at La Brisa – Wednesday, June 19. We got hold of WestSeven for a chat in Kuala Lumpur before he heads down to Bali next week. Ok let’s get straight to the point. Name, age, where are you from, how did you get into DJing? Rory Gallagher, 31, originally from London, but danced all around the UK for a while before moving to Asia. I got into DJing just before I started producing, around 16 years ago. I was influenced by London’s strong house & garage sound and the Irish trance

46

www.thebeatbali.com

scene that I was introduced too back then. What’s the Westseven moniker about? I produced a lot of other music under my own name and felt it was time for a fresh persona, Westseven is where I was born. W7 London. The postcode. That was about a year ago. Irish trance scene eh? What are you into now? Melodic house, deep melodic stuff. Where do you normally play? I live in Kuala Lumpur so usually around the cities hottest night spots. Kyo, Jiro, Le Noir. How long have you been there and Asia? Asia seven years. Here in KL coming up to three years. How is it in KL? I heard it has quite a robust nightlife nowadays. KL over the last few years has blossomed incredibly, the local DJs are very talented and eclectic. The few venues that are left are slowly filling up and now most weekends there’s a big name playing in the city.

FEATURE I’ve heard that there is a healthy underground scene going on too. Yeah, it’s growing from strength to strength recently, with KYO, The Sweatbox and Jiro being the biggest contributors. So before that you were in the UK. What was happening back there and how did you make the move to Asia? I was teaching music technology in colleges back in the UK before I moved out. Did the whole teaching thing. Then got climate sick and moved to Asia, first Thailand for nearly five years where I learnt my DJ craft playing on Koh Phangan and all over Thailand for the best part of three years. The scene in Cardiff where I was living before was non-existent, so I couldn’t settle. Asia seems to have a much more immersive and strong upcoming underground scene, that supports new talents, more than back in the UK.

messages here and there from people asking me if I was the real Rory Gallagher. Needless to say the guy was a heavy weight. Would you say Westseven is a different sound to your original Rory Gallagher? Yes, I’m making more dance floor aimed music at the moment, as you will hear on my upcoming EP on Anjunadeep later this year. What would you play at Escape for example? Captivating melodic music. Deep and dynamic with lots of highs. (You can check this article on thebeatbali.com for Westseven’s tracks). Who would you say are your greatest influencers in music? So many greats to mention but recently I find guys like Olafur Arnalds, Nils Frahm, Jody Wisternoff, Cubicolor & Hayze! Ever been to Bali before? Yes a few times now, but just for short breaks. This will be the first time I’ve spun there.

Have you been touring around Asia much? What were some of the highlights? Yeah, I played twice at Beam in Bangkok with Neverest Records (Bangkok’s finest label), the jungle experience in Koh Phangan was fun. I played for years with some of the biggest names around. I also played in Singapore recently, for Eyes To The Front.

How did the Anjunabeats signing come about? They contacted me in late 2017 to see if I had any unsigned music. And Voila! The story continues soon.

How were those Koh Phangan full moon parties, are they as good as they say? Full moon parties are nice a few times, but after a while it gets very tiring, too many stupid kids around. Playing there, though was a lot of fun.

What do you like most about spinning/making underground music? The creation of unique moments and emotions that you conjure up with a production or a good performance are what’s most enjoyable for me.

How did you get involved with Escape? I played in Singapore last month with Kaiser. He liked what happened and invited me to come play this month.

You can catch Westseven spinning live next Wednesday June 19 at La Brisa, Canggu. Doors open at 4pm and close at 4am.

BTW, you aren’t related to your guitarist namesake, are you? Haha no, it was one of the main reasons I changed the name in the end as I’d get a few www.thebeatbali.com

DJ Story #7 Bali Resident DJ’s Dean Dixon Canada Hi Dean, when did you become a Bali resident DJ? I moved to Bali three years ago to take a residency at Potato Head and kinda got hooked on the “local spirit, tropical soul” vibes. Tell us your background in music I played drums in high-school and always had music on at home but never in my wildest dreams had I ever considered DJing. But as it turned out I was working in Canada and there was nowhere good to go out, so I decided to put on my own event. I actually started DJing the week before the first party. I was terrible! But it was really fun and no one there knew any better Lol .. After that I was hooked and ended up moving to Australia for work. In Sydney I starting throwing parties with a few like-minded pals and that party we called “HAHA”. It eventually built itself up into an event company called HAHA Industries. We hosted and toured some really amazing artists and put on a lot of great events over the course of a decade. When we

decided to call it quits I wanted to simplify things, focus more on DJing, and slowly delved into music production. I had a look around and the opportunity at Potato Head popped up and I decided to jump at it and haven’t looked back since. Favourite styles to spin? I prefer not being bound to a particular genre so don’t really have a favourite. Current Bali residencies Potato Head, W Hotel, Rock Bar, Karma, Kilo, Mama San, Sandy Bay, 40 Thieves, Unique Rooftop, Roosterfish, Old Man’s. (complete the sentence) .. “I love to play in Bali because ....” Everyday feels like a holiday. Thank you Dean, see you around the island. Where can we follow you? THE BEATFOOD CANGGU CANGGU The champion Grazing Board completely won us over, this haloumi centered dish is designed as a share plate, but is also completely satisfying as a solo meal. Absolute superstars of Sprout Café are their mega salad bowls – a definite must try is a Trio of Salads, you pick any three super fresh salads from their menu and they toss it into a big bowl for you. Great value, great taste. For carnivores we couldn’t recommend the Sprout Steak Sandwich more; tender, juicy Australian beef rib eye in a culinary “marriage” with beetroot, cabbage and radish. We promise this creative combo will make your taste buds dance.

hen this cozy, home-style café sprouted on the right side of Canggu, aka Berawa, all the expat families rejoiced. It shares the building with a preschool, so this makes it a perfect place for all the mummas to catch up over their much-needed coffee while their little ninjas zip around the dedicated kids’ corner. Sprout is another brainchild of the brother team behind the popular Seminyak venue Sacred Ground, and we gotta say that they have done it again – this time with a more health oriented offerings. Their modern Arabesque style menu boasts original culinary inventions you won’t find anywhere else.

Coffee is a big deal here too, as the owner duo sampled beans from all over the world to finally come up with their own Empirical house blend. This special combination works brilliantly in espresso as it offers full, intense flavor, yet also enough complexity that allows the blend to extract perfectly in milk heavy coffees as well. When in doubt, go to Sprout, they offer consistently great dishes with a big focus on flavor in a bright, modern, airconditioned space dominated by a large colorful wall mural.

palate. My partner and I were feeling quite carnivorous, so we opted for some of the wilder options on the menu. Before ordering, we enjoyed some beers whilst watching the surfers enjoy the last of the waves before dark, I was feeling a bit naughty and ordered one of their signature cocktails - the Citrus Sensation (125K). A refreshing, not too sweet marriage of gin and lemon, orange, lime and strawberry. The perfect palate cleanse before our Mixed BBQ Platter (198k).

We couldn’t have started with a better plate – roasted duck, soy sauce chicken, crispy pork belly and char siew pork. The meats came with tortillas and some leafy condiments, for a DIY session of Asian tacos. We moved on to another exciting dish, this time something from their newly presented Indonesian menu and something that I actually hadn’t tried before – the Nasi Bakar Beef Rendang (95k), constructed of rice and beef, I would call this dish an Indonesian rendang burrito even though it is nothing like a burrito. We cut into the centre of the rice and an oozing beef rendang showed itself and tasted delicious, quite a stand-out dish! For the mains, we wanted something to share, because who doesn’t share food when you’re on a date!? Moonlite’s pièce de résistance is the Pork Knuckle (295k). A grandiose knuckle with tender meat that falls right off the bone! Recommended for the meat-lovers out there. We paired it with the Long Beans, Sichuan Bacon & Garlic (49k) to make sure we had some greens and felt more than satisfied! Except we are dessert addicts… and couldn’t leave before trying the Alaska Chocolate Cake with Chocolate Ice Cream (88k). A combination of chocolate ice cream cake and flambéed meringue that really caught our eye. We left feeling happy with our choices and thanked the Moonlite staff for yet another great Date for 2. www.thebeatbali.com

What Do You Recommend, Hard Rock Café Mango Bacon Sliders Chef: Agi David

CHEF?

Since its inception, Hard Rock Café has established itself as a home for top of the line burgers crafted with premium ingredients. According to Chef Agi David, the new Mango Bacon Sliders (IDR 229K) put an innovative twist on time-honored classics, adding a new dimension to the burger experience. One serving of these bad boys comes with three sliders, plus long, thick-cut fries and a srirachamayo blend on the side. A thick imported-beef patty is coated in a layer of luscious jack cheese and serves as the base of the slider. Just above that, Mango Bacon sauce injects a zesty tang that cuts through savory flavors of bacon and beef. The result is a burst of flavors that evolves and intensifies the longer you have it in your mouth. The crown jewel is the deep-fried avocado; whole slices are bread crumbed and fried to a crisp, leaving the inside soft like guacamole and the outside crunchy like a hash brown. The Mango Bacon Sliders were the voted the best dish in a competition that saw over 170 different creations from Hard Rock Café’s worldwide locations battle it out—that’s how good they are. They may only be available until end of June, so be sure to try them while you have the chance!

CD REVIEW

7/10 Glen Hansard

This Wild Willing Having shot to folkie fame thanks to his lead role in the Dublin busker musical ‘Once’, Glen Hansard struggled to follow up the soundtrack’s success with his subsequent albums. For all its soul bearing, the songwriting of the former Frames leader often lacked the grit to break from comparisons to Van Morrison’s more MOR musings. This Wild Willing - his fourth solo effort however, sees him laying an entirely new path for himself. Whether it’s the addition of Dublin electronic artist Dunk Murphy (aka Sunken Foal) in his supporting cast or some other epiphany, there is real steel displayed here. This kind of experimentation can often lead to clunky,

unfocused work but Hansard keeps everything tight, ensuring the album flows logically from one idea to the next. From the gloriously violent, slo-mo eruption of “Ill Be You, Be Me Too” to the trod-modern folk ballad romance of “Leave A Light”, This Wild Calling casts Hansard in a less restrained and far more fascinating light. A true leap forward for an artist maybe just coming into his own after all this time. Dan Ashcroft

MANISH’S ZODIAC PREDICTIONS The Beat astrologer Manish Kumar Arora reads into the next two weeks. Aries ( 21 March – 19 April )

Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July )

You may find yourself in a position in which there is a blending of the financial with social or public affairs. You are more socially ambitious than usual during this cycle. Attention is drawn to your professional manner or your personal relationships become more public. It could also be a time when much of your energy is channelled into private matters, or when you prefer that others don’t observe what you are doing. You are in the position to make an impression on others. You have presence and you project confidence. Favorable Dates : 16, 23, 25 Favorable Colors : Yellow & Grey

A stronger sense of community is with you during this cycle. A lively agenda is promised, you’re attracting quite a bit of interest, and your energy for making contact with others is strong. This is an especially strong period for personal magnetism and close partnering. You take more pride than usual in your creations, your love affairs, your children, and your hobbies. Pleasure and amusement play an important role in your search for freedom of self-expression now. You have good team spirit right now and you are more tactful and obliging with your co-workers. Favorable Dates : 13, 19, 20 Favorable Colors : Blue & Grey

Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )

Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )

Your actions are governed by your instincts during this period, you may be especially defensive and protective. You may work hard at making yourself feel more secure and you may be called upon to take charge on the home and family front. It’s a time to turn inner restlessness into fruitful contact with others. Heightened awareness of your position in life within the context of the group, rather than through selfcentered focus, is probable as well as a need for social security. The flowing, expressive, and spontaneous energy surrounding you attracts like-hearted people. Favorable Dates : 19, 21, 27 Favorable Colors : Yellow & White

A blast of personal energy comes your way and showing your leadership skills works for you now. You are at your most convincing, as others are accepting you at face value. Your mind is especially inquisitive during this cycle, when learning, short trips, and other forms of communication and making connections, appeal strongly. Increased energy and a renewed feeling of confidence is with you now, so take advantage. It’s a great period for doing something entirely new and pioneering—to go solo in some area of your life. Favorable Dates : 18, 20, 26 Favorable Colors : Yellow & Blue

Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June )

Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September )

It’s a great time to open up conversations with loved ones, as you are more rational when it comes to personal matters now. Your mind often wanders to domestic concerns, and issues surrounding your home, family, and personal past come to the forefront. Your demeanor is light-hearted and curious, and others might turn to you for advice. This is the time when you can most easily use the power of words to attract what you want for yourself. Striking a balance between energy spent on work and energy spent on domestic matters is essential now. Favorable Dates :16, 20, 21 Favorable Colors : Yellow & Blue

You are in the position to make an impression on others and to assert your personal influence beyond its normal boundaries. Spontaneity of expression is what this transit is about. You are ready to put your past behind you and to start a new personal cycle. Personal courage is with you, but you are also very grounded and realistic. A strong desire to make things happen is with you now. This is a strong period for friendships and group activities, as well as pleasant romantic surprises with a partner. Favorable Dates : 18, 20, 25 Favorable Colors : Yellow & Blue

www.thebeatbali.com

Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )

Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January )

You have much energy for new money-making projects, or for stepping up existing ones. You may be over-identifying with what you have and own, and you could be trying to prove yourself and your worth to others using money and possessions as the means to do so. You may feel renewed by a new perspective in your life, something philosophical or spiritual that you read or learn, or an adventure that takes you away from the mundane routines in your life. It is a time when intimacy and deep levels of sharing are heightened. Favorable Dates : 17, 25, 26 Favorable Colors : Yellow & Whte

You are able to stand your ground and assert yourself more than usual during this transit. You have energy at your disposal to move your plans forward, and you are more enterprising. Your mind is always active with new ideas for an increase of income during this cycle. Siblings may be a source of financial or material gain or loss now. You have more energy at your disposal to make money, but also to defend your values. This can be a very resourceful time, when you make the most of what you have. Favorable Dates : 15, 19, 20 Favorable Colors : White & Purple

Scorpio ( 23 October – 21 November )

Aquarius ( 20 January – 18 February )

It’s a great time to pick up information from your environment and the people in it. You might play with various ways to increase personal funds, resulting in more than one avenue for monetary gain. Avoid letting undue pressure from others push you into signing important papers that may create a serious financial commitment. You have a taste for the exotic now that can show up in many areas of your life–who you are attracted to, what you buy, the kind of art or entertainment you enjoy, and so forth. Favorable Dates : 19, 21, 24 Favorable Colors : Yellow & Red

Creative projects can flourish with enlarged focus and redoubled efforts that somehow don’t tire you out. Time flies when you’re having fun and leaves you with more vigor than when you began. Your focus remains in this area of life, but caution and perhaps anxiety or confusion begin to dominate after 21st May. It would be wise to be especially clear when it comes to communicating with colleagues or bosses or take this time to re-examine issues rather than communicating about them prematurely. Smoothing over differences using your diplomacy skills figures now. Favorable Dates : 16, 22, 25 Favorable Colors : Red & Green

Sagittarius ( 22 November -21 December )

Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March )

You might focus on ways to earn money in or from your home. Loyalty and sensitivity in your relationships are more important to you than typically. This is a calming influence–a time when simple pleasures most appeal. You want to have fun, and the demands of your larger goals in life may have been eclipsing your pleasure-seeking activities. Others notice and perhaps admire you for your pleasant and cheerful personality. Some of you may find this time an energy sapper, as they feel ignored or unnoticed. Favorable Dates : 13, 19, 22 Favorable Colors : Blue & Red

This is the time of year when personal finances and possessions receive maximum attention. Pour your energy into your work and your finances, and you might just be able to take your ideas to the bank. Around the 16th, emotional issues surrounding creative projects, romance, or children capture your attention, but wait things out before jumping to any conclusions. If you are feeling good about yourself, and especially if you have taken advantage of the time for re-building of confidence you will fairly radiate during this expressive period. Favorable Dates : 14, 19, 23 Favorable Colors : White & Green

ART

Eyes and Faces Until June 30, 2019 Paradiso, Ubud

Wolfgang Widmoser, a former pupil of the surrealist legend Salvador Dali, is exhibiting his work this month at Paradiso, Ubud. The German artist chooses to portray the island of the gods not through its landscapes but through the eyes of its women. The works are a celebration of feminine beauty and an expression of intensity journeying into the depths of the soul,○ its joy and motivation. The artist sees these portraits of local women as the possibility where color and consciousness intersect. He augments a number of these faces with distortions based on projective geometry to increase intensity through the effect of proximity. You can view Widmoser’s works at Paradiso, Ubud from 12pm - 7pm daily until June 30, 2019.
