SCOOP Red Bull Pump Track World Championship Qualifier Red Bull Pump Track is the world’s very first pump track competition to be held on a global scale. The competition is currently in its preliminary stages with qualifiers being held all over the world. Once regional finalists have been announced, the main event will proceed. Indonesia’s finest riders will battle it out at the national qualifiers here at Amplitude Skate and Bike Park on Saturday, July 20th. The winner will claim a spot in the Red Bull Pump Track - World Final. You can head down to Amplitude from 9am - 7pm to see some the country’s best talents on the pump track.
Rip Curl Cup 2019 This year’s Rip Curl Cup features one of the most exclusive bouts in professional surfing with just 16 competitors — Indonesia’s finest making up half and the world’s elite making up the other half. The waiting period spans the entire month of July until the 31st, which is also the peak of Indonesia’s season of swell. When the swell lines up optimally in Padang Padang, an official forecast will be sent out giving competitors 48 hours to make it to the world-famous beach. The select number of surfer invitations makes it highly likely that it will be a “one-day, one-swell” event. It is one of the world’s great surfing events with talent such as defending champion Jack Robinson, Mason Ho, and local legend Mega Semadhi in the lineup. For those in Bali at the time, it will be a day of spectacular performances in incredible conditions that is not be missed. Head to the official Rip Curl Asia website to stay updated on all the action. www.thebeatbali.com

Well known guitarist/songwriter around town, Athron has embarked again on a quest to create a new song every day, and many late nights for sure, over a three week period. The creative challenge is akin to climbing Everest in songwriting terms, but Athron appears to be ready and up for the climb. This is the second time in just over two years he’s doing this. In early 2017, it was 21 songs, this time it’s 22.
40
www.thebeatbali.com
FEATURE Athron told the beat while already half way through the cycle, “The ‘22 Songs in 22 Days’ is my self-imposed mission to write, record and release 22 songs in 22 days. It’s basically a creative boot camp to forge a bunch of new material into existence,” he continues. “As a singer and guitarist I love improvising, which often brings out new ideas and sounds for songs, but it’s much harder to be diligent in shaping and finalizing new works. This pushes me to do just that. I wouldn’t really consider it a challenge unless I went through at least three stages of hating myself for challenging myself. I think I hit that in the first week! Two years ago I did the same thing for 21 days, so I figured I should better my own score,” says the lanky performer always focused on his craft. So the clear reason for doing it is the creative process. I suppose you also get more benefits from it too. Were there any particular wins the last time around? “Just getting that many original songs out of my brain and into completion feels like a win. Some great things spawned from it too though. I had someone contact me regarding a film script about a musician in Bali, so I’ve been helping to write both the script and the music for that. Hopefully it will move into production. It also gave me a fresh set of songs for my live shows which is always energizing.”
Days You Tube account, I wondered how many of the tracks were already half baked before day one of the process. Most of the songs are very well polished I might add and especially with such proliferation. “A few of the songs are ideas I’ve had rolling around in my head or riffs I’ve jammed on at gigs before, so this is my way of finalizing them. Most have been written on the day of recording, though, especially the collaborations. It’s been a good lesson on not wasting time when writing with other people. Often we are racing to finish writing a song so we can record and film it by sunset,” he tells the beat. The video settings are mainly in and around the musician’s house in Kerobokan and we do see a lot of his lounge/recording room at all times of the day and night. He was helped with videos on a couple of tracks by Christina Kincheloe and other videos by friends in need. The music ranges from classic Athron ballads, to rock numbers, sweet duets, country, funk, electronic dance beats, acapella and just about everything in between. He’s aided amiably on some tracks with the talents of Leana Rachel, Ian Stephenson, Den Bagus, Phil Stoodley and John Marciano so far, and there will probably be more before the 22 days are up.
Keep a track on Athron’s work by While listening through the songs searching for “Athron 22 Songs in 22 recorded so far on the 22 Songs in 22 Days” and enjoy the tunes. [Trauts] www.thebeatbali.com

Robbie Lowe
back in town and ready to Escape
I will let Escapee, Kaiser Waldon introduce Robbie Lowe. “Meet our very special guest Robbie Lowe. He’s personally been a big influence on my own DJing in terms of mixing technique and music curation! He’s won the hearts and minds of three generations of clubbers in Sydney and we are super excited to have him as our headliner at Escape next week.” Robbie Lowe has been at the top of the underground crop Down-Under for many years and has been one of Australia’s finest and most influential DJ’s over the past two decades. Robbie loves to DJ, openly pledging to play forever. So far, he has been doing just that and in the process getting punters into a dance music tizz for more than 25 years. Well, as we do, we kick off with the basics. Name, age, and how did you get involved in DJing….. Robbie Lowe. Age 45. As a teenager I was hooked on early 90’s hip house, house and rave. I would listen to a lot of DJ mixes and was fascinated with how DJs mixed records together, to create an endless groove and journey. When I was about 20, a good friend lent me his turntables plus a pile of records
42
www.thebeatbali.com
to play around on. I was instantly hooked! I would mix for hours. When the day came for my friend to collect them back, I saved money as fast as I could to get my own set up! That’s pretty much my introduction into DJing ... Where did you first play a gig? How’d it go? My first gig was a friend’s 21st birthday party circa 1994. The set up was a small rave cave under his house. I remember being so nervous!
FEATURE My hands were shaking mixing my first two records together. After that, every mix got easier and my confidence was building. By the end of the party you couldn’t get me off the decks! The gig went great and the feeling of making people dance was amazing. That was Sydney in the early days of electronic, right? I recall Sydney was a live music power house in the early 90s. How was the clubbing scene back then? Was there much resistance to electronic? It was vibrant. There were many clubbing options. You could go to a different clubs and dance to different genres of dance. The underground world was also strong. Secret warehouse raves were plenty and of course, the famous Hordern parties. There’s always been resistance of some form but definitely more freedom than today. You could enter a club anytime of the night and leave at daylight. There’s often focus on electronic music from the authorities and usually for all the wrong reasons. That happens a lot more in Sydney today. Yes there has been a lot of discussion about rave party casualties lately. But of course more people die in car accidents than raving in any case. Bless them all, of course. Has the music you play changed much over the years? Or at least, the music you are interested in, has that changed much over the years? The music is always changing and regardless of the style, there are certain attributes that always attracts me with the music I play. I’ve always liked warmth in my sound. I also like melody and depth. Plus I love my bass lines and groove! I have an open mind to music and have a very broad music palette. What have been some of the highlights thru your now 25 years of DJing? Some of my earlier highlights that come to mind are ... Warming up for both Sasha and John Digweed In Sydney on several occasions. My Sweetchlli residency (One of Sydney’s original Progressive house parties) My Spice Cellar residency ... I had some amazing gigs
here - especially my 8 hour set for my ‘20 years of DJ’ing’ anniversary party. Playing gigs in the US, China, Fiji (Cloud 9) and Indonesia. Doing a mix for Ministry Of Sound (Sessions: Rebirth). And more recently being asked again by Sasha & John Digweed to warm up for them at their two Sydney Weekend In Residence, Ministry Of Sound Shows. Who would be your greater influences in music today? Some of my main influences these days are; Danny Howells, John Digweed, Sasha, Nightmares On Wax, Cassy, Till Von Sein, DJ Tennis, Uone, Jimpster, Roy Rosenfeld, Deetron, Prins Thomas, Lady Blacktronica and Ian Pooley. Whether it’s the tunes they are making or sets they are playing, they are the ones doing it for me! How about the recording front, what highlights have you had there? I’ve done several remixes, collaborations and solo releases over the years on labels, Proton, Low Pressings, Xima Records and Outta Limits. I kinda took a couple years off just to focus on DJ’ing. But now I’m back and hungry to get into the studio. I have an EP coming out next month with longtime production partner Matt Rowan on Late Night Music. The EP is called ‘Actual’ and has a couple great remixes from B-Tham and Kazuki. And you have been to Bali before a few times right? Do you have any fond memories of the place and what can we expect next week at the fab Escape show at La Brisa? I’ve been coming to Bali for years to DJ and chase waves! Every visit has been awesome. I have great memories playing at venues such as the now defunct Koh, W Bali, Jenja and Single Fin. Always a great vibe and mix of people. I can’t wait to play at Escape July 17. Scotty Callaghan & Kaiser Waldon are good friends of mine from Sydney. The guys know how to throw a party! I will keep the music fun with a mix of house and techno... But you never really know until the day, so anything is possible... I know it’s going to be good! [Trauts]

DJ Story #8 Bali Resident DJ’s Funktastic Maick Spain Hi Maick, when did you become a Bali resident DJ? In 2012. Tell us your background in music. Music was my first love. Always surprised and curious about how different songs could make you feel. I grew up with the influences of my big sister’s music collection. Soul II Soul, The Police, Sade .. Later I met hip-hop, something different and new, but putting together many elements of the music that I heard before. Living in Canary Islands you got lots of influences specially from UK, so I was also starting to play Acid House, Rave, Jungle. At one point I started digging in the crates to discover all those classics they used as samples, realizing that what I liked most was the original songs, and what caught my attention was Funk, Disco & Groove .. I always just wanted to share the music that I liked so I became a DJ. Starting at friends’ birthdays or NYE house parties .. At 15 yrs old I was resident DJ at Matinée (Pacha Tenerife), and from there DJ’ing is all that I’ve been doing, together with radio shows, TV, and organizing my own events to promote and sharing The Music.
Favourite styles to spin? I love to play all kind of classics but what I find the most challenging/fun is to play open format. Playing just one genre limits you and becomes boring. With open format you don’t have limits. Many times someone requests a completely different song of what I’m spinning, then, I ask myself, how I can go to that song now. It’s challenging and makes my heart smile with joy. Current Bali residencies I play exclusively for LYD Bali Group. Mainly La Favela, and supporting La Plancha, La Laguna, La Brisa. And Attika, the new house room on the third floor of La Favela. (complete the sentence) .. “I love to play in Bali because ....” I think that Bali has one of the most interesting and diverse crowds and dance floors. People sharing that great vibe of “I’m on holidays”, or “I’m in this magical island of Bali” .. and the music just makes it better. Thank you Maick, see you around the island. From its vibrant street art to old-style shadow puppets, to traditional Batik techniques and UNESCO listed temples in its vicinity, Yogjakarta represents the best of the authentic Javanese culture. To absorb the authentic Yogja vibe, we recommend you hop on a “Becak – local means of transportion resembling Rikshaw - super convenient, affordable and you will

support the local Becak drivers. There is over ten thousand of them, so you can easily get a ride anywhere in the city. Start your tour de city at the main drag, Jalan Malioboro, sample all the aromatic local food, haggle for some traditional Batik and original souvenirs at the famous local market and do not miss all the produce and fragrant spices on the second floor.

One short becak ride will take you to the gem of this cultural hub - The Sultan’s Palace. A well-manicured complex of interconnected gardens with semi open pavilions, housing memorabilia and precious artifacts of the long lines of Sultans ruling Yogja. All the signage is in Indonesian only, so dust off your Indo lingo skills before you go.
Another bumpy becak ride and you hop off in front of shabby walls of the once great Sultan’s Water Palace. The whole area is only a sad reminder of the old opulent times, when according to the local guide - the Sultan used the palace to bathe with his harem. Now, the mutually interconnected system of pools is quite downtrodden and unkempt, covered in 50 shades of green mold. interesting atmosphere and shabby aesthetics are worth a look. Must visit for every cultural aficionado is the very visible form of traditional art “the Wayan Kulit” shadow puppets workshops. They are really easy to locate, dispersed seemingly everywhere in the district behind the walls of the Sultan’s Palace. You can enjoy watching the artists in the dusty studios, crafting the elaborate puppets, the quintessential Jogja artefacts. If you want to see them in action – the Sonobudoyo Heritage Museum holds shows almost every day of the week. But it is not all about the traditional art and culture in Yogja. You can find vibrant politically and socially charged street graffiti art covering its walls. We found the backpacker district of Prawirotaman especially charming with all the cozy cafes, bakeries and little homestays tucked away in the labyrinth of small alleys. When you feel like you’ve had enough of the city buzz, there is plethora of other

remarkable attractions outside of Yogja too. The renowned majestic Hindu Temple of Borobudur built in 10AD checks all the boxes. It really pays off to wake up early for the visit of this shrine – labeled as the most impressive example of the Buddhist Architecture. There are over five hundred statues of Buddha and other decorative ornaments adorning the temple. As it is massively popular, the site gets taken over by tourists during the day. So book in for one of the sunrise visits, the temple has an indescribably mystical atmosphere at this early hour and offers magnificent views of the plains from up top. The list of what to do outside of Yogja could certainly go on, as there is also a multitude of interesting treks to be had, caves to be explored, gushing waterfalls to be marveled at and long empty beaches to relax on. This culturally charged city and its surroundings certainly won’t let you leave disappointed!

My date and I devoured these dishes within moments, excited for what was to come! Before the mains, the head mixologist came to www.thebeatbali.com

MANISH’S ZODIAC PREDICTIONS The Beat astrologer Manish Kumar Arora reads into the next two weeks. Aries ( 21 March – 19 April )
Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July )
There is certainly room for imagination and inspiration in your career in the next two weeks and what happens as the period begins will also have a pay-off on the home front. You are also inclined to take a few risks with your finances, or unusual ways of making money could be in place during this cycle. Now is the time to nurture your latent inventive or progressive, future-oriented talents. You may, for example, receive a cosmic push towards expressing yourself more creatively and experience an increased drive to take charge of your life. Favorable Dates : 12, 16, 21 Favorable Colors : Yellow & Blue
You will eliminate some deepseated habits and attachments that have been keeping you back from feeling emotionally free. You would emerge healthier and stronger. Positive connections made now suggest that you are likely to discover resources that you never knew you had. Help seems to be magically there when you need it, and your own awesome strength and faith is always there to draw upon. For most, carving out a personal identity that includes a significant other who furthers their own personal growth will come into focus. Favorable Dates : 17, 18, 22 Favorable Colors : Red & Blue
Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )
Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )
This is a time to go after your dreams, for certain, but do your best to avoid alienating people or things that you normally hold dear to your heart. Dissatisfaction and frustrations getting what you want, especially with regard to relationships with others and with your resources, often characterize the first half of the period. You may discover that previous methods of controlling your environment and the people in your life simply are not effective any more. Increased responsibilities in general and in your career figure, and are actually important for your development. Favorable Dates : 16, 19, 24 Favorable Colors : Yellow & Brown
You are likely to be more sensitive to what seem like outer world pressures that force you to examine some of your deepest desires and attachments. These include your sexual relationships, your finances and your need for control. Your intuition is heightened to possibly even uncanny levels in this period. While this period is a contented one on many levels, you enjoy an increasing feeling of hope, optimism, and spiritual protection. Some of your work is done in seclusion, or you work behind the scenes in this period. Favorable Dates : 11, 18, 20 Favorable Colors : Red & Yellow
Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June )
Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September )
You are increasingly less focused on your own self-centered needs, more universal in your concerns, and more open to the intangible realms of inspiration and beauty. Get in touch with what feels most comfortable for you and the intimacy level in your relationship will step up a notch. This period should help you make watertight plans for your mind, body and spirit in a way which serves all of them, at the same time. Reduce the emotional temperature when making health decisions. Functional health needs care. Keep a tab on your diet. Favorable Dates : 18, 19, 23 Favorable Colors : Red & Blue
Expansion, confidence, and hopefulness are keywords this time. You are feeling good about yourself and confident about your future. This transit brings noticeable improvements to your environment and self-confidence to your personality. Your personality is more obviously expansive, exuberant, and enthusiastic. Once you set your determined little mind to something, there’s just no way you won’t have it. So when you decide who and what you want, you have only to focus your considerable energies on it, and you can rest assured that you’ll reach all those goals. Favorable Dates : 11, 15, 20 Favorable Colors : Red & Purple

Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )
Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January )
Life is certainly clearer for you. The area of life that is subject to the most changes is your close relationships, or partnerships. Reevaluating sexual and intimate expression could figure. Your independent spirit pushes up and out, and you enjoy plenty of scope for doing your own thing. Others take special interest in you. Enhancing your appearance in some manner serves to increase your confidence even further. Career and finances are especially strong. You navigate your way successfully through this period by avoiding unwanted financial deals. Favorable Dates : 14, 17, 23 FavorableColors : Yellow & Blue
You are noticed and recognized for your natural talents on the job, and you could be busy re-investing money into your career. Some of you will be making money from esoteric endeavors or through work behind the scenes. Learning and education are areas of your life that undergo the most change. You have an altogether different perspective on life in this period, and are not inclined much to sweat the small stuff. This period gives you a push towards a stronger identity as well as a sense of purposefulness through close partnership. Favorable Dates : 13, 15, 22 Favorable Colors : Red & Blue
Scorpio ( 23 October – 21 November )
Aquarius ( 20 January – 18 February )
This is a time when you are reclaiming your personal power. The things or even people that have held you back from being who you really tend to be left behind. Superficial attitudes or manners of self-expression no longer do it for you. The key to harnessing your energy is to identify and find pleasure in the simple things that make you happy. Still, there will be times when you feel bogged down by learning, projects, paperwork, and errands. You need to find time for indulging in hobbies and other pleasurable activities. Favorable Dates : 14, 16, 23 Favorable Colors : Green & Blue
You will think or feel differently about security, financial holdings or what you want in life. All these things will unfold slowly. The stars show a loss of interest in a project or group. Dealings with one group may take your attention from another. You may return to the company of past contacts or resume a past activity. Meditation and retreats may be particularly beneficial to you now, acting to regenerate and invigorate you. As the period progresses, your life gets livelier and this allows you to enjoy yourself. Favorable Dates : 11, 13, 20 Favorable Colors : White & Blue
Sagittarius ( 22 November -21 December )
Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March )
You are working on perfecting the art of intimate bonding with another person on a deep level. You are also getting a grip on finances, especially those that you share with or that come from others. Stirring in you is the desire to make radical changes to the manner in which you go after you want in life. You might need to guard against becoming too full of yourself or overly self-interested, however. There is also a risk of overindulgence and other forms of extreme behavior. Favorable Dates : 12, 14, 21 Favorable Colors : Red & Grey
This period helps you to focus on your goals. This transit is a stabilizing one – others know they can rely on you, and you on them. Your vision is all the more realistic now, but pleasingly so. You work steadily and determinedly towards your goals. You are working hard, taking on your fair share of duties and responsibilities, and reaping some of the rewards of your hard work. You no longer view your place in the world, your career, and your reputation with rose-colored glasses. Favorable Dates : 13, 14, 22 Favorable Colors : Red & Purple

Bite Helper Are you sick and tired of having itchy skin from those darn mosquitos? Bite Helper is a hand-held gadget that relieves the itchiness with a combination of focused heat and vibration to reduce mosquito bites to harmless, itch-free bumps. To understand how Bite Helper works, though, you need to know what happens when a mosquito bites you. Mosquito’s use their needle-like mouth to pierce your tender flesh and immediately injects some of its own saliva into your skin to prevent blood coagulation, which would cause the mosquito to get stuck. Your body identifies the saliva as “not you” and sends antibodies and histamine to attack the area. The result is a combination of a bump and, thanks to the histamine, the itch. Bite helper is not a mosquito repellent, its there to deal with the aftermath. The device is reusable for life, is non-toxic and designed tested and quality assured in the USA. Grab yours on amazon.com for only $39.95.
