MICHELLE OWEN Australian DJ and producer Michelle Owen will be making an appearance at the next S.A.S.H. event along with Ben Rau at Vue Beach Club on August 4. She will also be spinning at Red Ruby the previous night. With a sound that is ripe with soul and depth, Michelle’s styles range from groovy Chicago house to techno. She has released records on respected labels such as Moodmusic, Exploited, Dirt Crew and is a consistently making waves around the world by playing at venues and events such as Watergate (Berlin), Panorama Bar (Berlin), Snowbombing Festival (Austria), S.A.S.H. (Sydney), not to mention her prominent part in the house music scene in Sydney. Her appearance on Sunday, 4th of August will be in support of Ben Rau for the Sunday S.A.S.H. crew and we are excited to get to know her before the big weekend! Hey Michelle! How did you get into the house music scene? I made a lot of mixtapes, played (guitar) and wanted to become a sound engineer. I wasn’t convinced on dance music until I saw Danny Tenaglia play one of his epic 8hr sets, full of all styles of music, that’s when I discovered house music. After this, I bought turntables

46

www.thebeatbali.com

and started to find my path in the scene. I worked in record stores back in the day and I’m honoured I got to be a part of that moment in time. I still get people coming up to me saying how much they loved visiting Central Station or Savage Record to come hang and listen to music. Good times.

FEATURE Was your move to Berlin a key element in your musical direction or was it predetermined? After a good stint of DJ’ing in Sydney I knew I had to move overseas to really push myself and produce. I lived in Ibiza and London but found my home in Berlin. Living overseas to grow my musical career was always predetermined I just thought I’d end up in Ibiza. When I got offered a job with Beatport I moved to Berlin to make a life.

Meeting so many amazing creative people has been very inspiring. I’ve also evolved over the years so I’m working on the next phase of Almost Real and what that means to me and the community.

What have you been up to lately? Have you got any upcoming productions? I’ve been working on a new alias but that’s not ready to launch just yet so I’ll tell you more about that next time.

What part of the world are you most comfortable living and working? Where are you based now? Berlin was a massive part of my musical and personal development. I lived there for 6 years. I adore Ibiza too. Life events brought me back to Sydney but I do see travel in my future again. I’ve considered LA & Stockholm.

What are some of your most cherished moments behind the decks? Any stand-out events? Definitely playing b2b with my best friend La Fleur at Panorama bar for 6hrs. Events in amazing locations are my highlights. Snowbombing was in the beautiful Austrian alps and I lived in the Maldives for three months DJing on a remote island. How has 2019 treated you so far and what are you most looking forward to this year? It’s been great. I’ve been growing. Exploring my photography, documentary and content creation passions. It all started with Almost Real - a platform I started to discover Australian creatives doing what they love.

Who were some of your inspirations in the house & techno music scene when you were getting started? I adored Derrick Carter. The man’s skills, selections and attitude was always inspiring.

What are your thoughts on the South East Asian underground music scene? Do you have any thoughts about Bali? I love Bali. It has wellness, nature and music offerings so I get the best of all worlds. We can’t wait to have you at Red Ruby and at the S.A.S.H events next weekend. Can you name us a track that might encompass the vibes you will play for each event? I love SAM ‘Fury’s Laughter’ it’s the epitome of beauty and fun in one record! I adore PIV Records. Everything they release is gold.

A Sneaky visit to M r s S i p p y Miss Connie and Black Angus have been making beautiful music together as Sneaky Sounds System since 2004. A series of singles at first then, in 2006, their self-titled, 3 x platinum debut album. Spearheaded by a spectacular salvo of chart topping hits – UFO, Pictures and I Love It – Sneaky Sound System won ARIA Awards for Breakthrough Artist and Best Dance Release, the first of 14 nominations to-date. Two more albums later and collaborations with some of the biggest acts in music since, we now have them here in Bali and at Mrs Sippy in Seminyak for a three month residency. The Beat had a few words with vivacious vocalist Miss Connie last week about the residency, the summer, the kids and the Bali lifestyle. Tell me, you are now in Bali and have a three month residency at Mrs Sippy, how did that come about? We had had a couple of great shows at Mrs Sippy and had just done four seasons in Mykonos so the timing felt right to do something new...We’re here every Saturday July, August and September. Do you mean the last four summers in Mykonos? So you don’t like winter too much then? Hahaha, I guess the Sneaky party is never really a winter vibe. When was the first time you were in Bali? About 7 years ago for a show. And how does Bali compare to Mykonos as a place to stay and a place to party? I find that anywhere near the water with good weather is great for a party atmosphere,

48

www.thebeatbali.com

especially that magical sunset moment. Mykonos and Bali are both transient places so people come in for a short time and for a good time...hopefully we provide the soundtrack to their memorable moments! Nightlife and clubbing seem to be changing (here on Bali at least), with more interest in beach clubs than proper nightclubs nowadays. Or maybe just less people going out late-late like they used to. Is that happening everywhere you go right now? I think that there definitely is a celebration of the outdoors and the freedom that comes with that. Almost a hippy kind of embrace of being outside and comfortable watching sunsets at that magical time when the evening starts and you’ve had a few drinks and you wanna dance under the stars rather than in a club ... that part comes later... I think that also stems from

FEATURE the main DJ in a nightclub coming on at 2-3 am. You have a prolific discography of hits under your belt, is there one track that stands out as your favorite? It changes all the time. At the moment it’s “We Belong” the new single, of course, because it’s fresh. The Nichols jaar “always by your side” big remix is pretty beautiful. Is it possible to ask a personal question? Are you and Angus a couple? Hahaha. Yes it makes for easy touring that’s fo sho !! Yes, I just saw the kids on Angus’s instagram Yeah, we move as one. Nice one. Do they travel with you? I suppose they have school etc. Yeah, we all go everywhere. They’re not in school yet, which makes things a little easier. That’s an excellent way to grow up. Yeah, I think so. Adaptable. Yes my two children (now adults) grew up in three different countries. Makes them a little more advanced in many ways. Excellent proof of the theory. So what are some of the highlights of SSS over the past almost 18 years? I think highlights for me would include playing the lsle of White Festival, and Glastonbury was amazing too. Hearing your songs on BBC1 radio is always pretty crazy. Having a No.1 on the UK club chart was a great Xmas present last year, and of course recording with Kanye, Beyoncé and Jay Z, and with U2 in the room, was pretty special. I bet it was. That’s a lot of highlights. You mentioned a new record. I notice there was a new release today. What’s that one about? It’s about self-belief, self-belonging, it’s a summer banger and it’s called “We Belong”. Great track, BTW. That seems to be the direction SSS is taking nowadays. Summer house bangers. Any reason for that? I think in music you can never rest, always moving and try to move forward. This is the

landscape we live in. It is also the music we play in a three hour set. And I imagine it takes a lot of self-belief to get where you guys are now. Have there been moments when you think, damn, that’s enough. Definitely in the beginning but starting anything takes a lot of self-belief. Mmmm, we have been very lucky for sure. We are still able to do what we love and travel the world. I’d like to think that maybe we could be one of the first to play on Mars when they colonize it. Lol. Good answer. Where are you staying here BTW? In a fancy villa I imagine. Oh hahahaha. In Canggu, but it’s not overly fancy, but it feels like home and has some grass, trees and a pool. Now if it had a BBQ, well, heaven would be complete. And how have the shows at Mrs Sippy been going? I suppose the Scorpio Mykonos gigs gave you some good practice for that. Hahaha yeah, they did. It’s been fantastic. Such a giddy, hedonistic vibe, with beautiful girls, swagger boys dancing. We might just extend the season! What are you all doing in your down time, checking the sites? Writing some music? Yeah absolutely, no rest for the wicked in the music business, so we definitely are writing tunes and that’s the beauty of modern technology, all you need is a mic and a computer to get the idea down. That or a mobile phone recorder. Do you get a chance to enjoy Bali? I suppose there will be a Bali influenced track coming soon. I like the pace. I like the sense of gratitude for the smallest things. The open arm acceptance of everyone and everything. And the weather is pretty deeeelightful. Top three places you enjoy hanging out in Bali? Mrs Sippy Barbacoa Uluwatu You can catch Sneaky Sounds System at Mrs Sippy every Saturday from 5pm. [Trauts]

Island Bagels Bali Words & Photos by Vero NYC style bagels meet Bali! These round golden goodies crunchy on the outside and soft in the middle have arrived in Berawa and it is exactly what Canggu has been missing. [If there was anything. Ed] This petite deli oasis near popular Berawa beach has all kinds of fresh baked bagels you can think of, all generously stuffed with your choice of goodness. They are the right amount of chewy on the inside with a light crisp on the outside that is often elusive to find. You can enjoy them with excellent cuppa of fresh brewed coffee and don’t forget to leave room for Island Deli’s must try Zuchinni brownie with just the perfect amount of gooeyness! Another ace up their sleeve is their new deliciously creamy Smoothie Bowls, because Canggu – the world’s capital of smoothie bowls. We just can’t cope without seeing few of these babies on the menu. Every smoothie bowl crafted at Island Deli has a cornucopia of impressive looking toppings on an already delectable pile of health. Soon to land on the new menu are also breakfast bowls and wraps. True to Canggu ethos, Island Deli serves homemade and locally sourced ingredients as much as possible to keep you looking and feeling your island best. On cheat days go hard at it and spoil yourself by combining coffee & dessert in one - their extravagant Affogato! We do not have the willpower muscle strong enough to say no to a perfect marriage between coffee and an ice cream.

The Cashew Tree Garden Café

Words & Photos by Vero Just forget all the other cafes in the Bukit, because the Cashew Tree is where it’s at! This garden café powerhouse has acquired quite a loyal following and earned a legendary status among expats and visitors to the island alike and for a good reason. Spacious and breezy garden features many different seating areas, all spread apart so intelligently, you will never feel crowded. Makes it much easier to enjoy their fabulous menu full of organic, locally sourced offerings. Their nutritious breakfasts are an especially big hit (gluten free pancakes or tropical salad served in a halved coconut), but if you have a hangover situation, go all out and order the Big Breakfast, with eggs, bacon, hashbrowns – the whole deal. For lunch and dinner The Cashew Tree turns into a world capital of giant salad bowls and after having one, you will never think of salad the same way again. If you do not feel convinced, you can always get a juicy burger or other comfort foods. No matter your

preference, you will find you favorites here, plus what we love about this café the most: they’re really big on flavor! On top of really mastering the food, they’ve earned quite a reputation for their Thursday live acoustic nights and if you are one of those people who do not enjoy lazy holidays, get your butt kicked into action at the Bali Training Center, adjacent to the café. Just don’t say that we didn’t warn you – the CrossFit trainings here are brutal. Hand on heart, this café is not only in its own category in the Bukit, it wins Bali-wise and we’re more confident about this statement than about other things in life.

FOOD SCOOP New Dinner Menu at Fire The W Bali – Seminyak is always evolving and advancing their services in every way possible, and as of last week introduced some spectacular new dishes to the dinner menu at their Fire restaurant. Head Chef Beryl has been reconstructing the menu with the seasons in mind, introducing different flavours and produce depending on which season we are currently in. His recent development revolves around Summer, using fresh ingredients from local farms and their in-house garden, which brings us to their new and improved dishes. The Novios Tomato Salad – a tomato salad that is sourced from local farmer Novio and tastes as fresh and as delicious as can be! The salad uses burrata, green goddess, cucumber and balsamic to tie it all together, a must-try for vegetable lovers out there! We had the chance to try some of the highlights of the new seasonal dishes on the menu, all of which featured incredible cooking technique and execution. A prime example was the Moringa Crusted Snapper (k), a fresh confit of snapper that is later crusted with salty moringa and accompanied by tasty veggies and a killer local chili broth! Not to mention the Duo of Braised Beef Short Rib and Rioplatense & the Mount Agung Dessert! Check out their new dinner menu tonight, we promise you will not be disappointed!

estled in the midst of Legian’s hustle and bustle, a nifty restaurant/bar prides itself on great food and even better beers! Hoi Polloi is home to some of the best craft beers on the island, not to mention their all-encompassing food menu full of interesting items from all over the world. Choose to sit either in their fully air-conditioned bar and dining room in the street end, or the backyard beer garden, designed to escape from the busyness of the Seminyak streets, with live sports on the big screens and Thursday live music that goes well into the night. Before this date, my favourite aspect about Hoi Polloi was sitting with the boys and enjoying the craft beer tap wall. I usually hang out and relish on the Summer Solstice Cream Ale (90k)

FOOD from California, Fresh Squeezed IPA (105k) from Oregon or the Bohemian Pilsner (90k) from New Zealand. However, on my date, I wanted to get in touch with my romantic side, so as well as ordering my favourite beer, I decided to try some of their tantalizing entrées and larger plates to share with my girl. We started off with some Marinated Olives (30k), Smoked Quail, Manchego & Sage Croquettes (55k) and the Yaki Gyoza (55k). The range of cuisines and options on the menu

makes for quite an interesting selection of food, which we thoroughly enjoyed. The favourite so far was the Gyoza’s, cooked to perfection and tasting like they had come straight out of a Chinese kitchen. With only good things to say so far, we were excited for our mains to arrive and they didn’t disappoint! We shared the Chargrilled Baby Octopus (75k), 6-hour braised Beef Ragu (85k) and the Steamed Mussels (95k). All of which showcased their versatility and creative nature in the kitchen. We ended up deciding that the Mussels were our favourite of the three and moved on to the desserts. It isn’t a romantic date without a sweet ending and Hoi Polloi cater to that perfectly. You gotta try their home-made Salted Caramel IPA Ice Cream (45k), made from Anderson Valley’s Hop Ottin’ IPA and their Chocolate Espresso Brulee (50k) and Spiced Apple Pie (40k). CD REVIEW

8/10

back to basics

The Black Keys Let’s Rock The Black Keys’ 2014’s subdued “Turn Blue” was the sound of a band all out of ideas, but five years later here on “Let’s Rock” – their ninth studio LP – the Ohio two-piece have rediscovered their past form, cooking up another stone-cold classic. Taking things right back to basics, Dan Auerbach (guitar, vocals) and Patrick Carney (drums) sound reinvigorated, mixing up the raw, live sound of their early work with a more practiced songwriting maturity to wonderful effect. Each track rattles into existence fully formed, like you’ve heard it before and know it already, but with enough commotion and verve to keep things exciting.

These are tried and tested formulas, chord progressions and drum fills: Comforting, familiar and toe tapping in all the right ways. “Walk Across Water” sprawls slowly like a sundrenched afternoon, while the slide-guitar riddled “Sit Around And Miss You” is one of the loveliest little ditties you’ll hear this year. At times it can feel almost a little too simplistic – “Go” and lead single “Hi/Lo” are about as refined as a Happy Meal - but in truth it just doesn’t seem to matter in the grand scheme of things. “Let’s Rock” is insanely catchy at every turn, with nary a dull moment throughout. It’s good to see the boys are back doing what they do best. Dan Ashcroft

Benji Brand Wins 2019 Rip Curl Cup B

enji Brand received a personal invitation from Mick Fanning to compete in the 2019 Rip Curl Cup at Padang Padang. And on the best day of the year so far at The Balinese Pipeline, Brand did not disappoint. In grinding 6 to 8-foot Padang Padang barrels, the rapidly ascending 23-year-old South African, who grew up on the North Shore of Oahu, topped a field of 16 of the world’s best tube riders with an electric all-day performance to claim The Cup. “I was so surprised when I heard that Mick had invited me to compete in this event,” Brand said after being soaked with champagne by his fellow tube hounds on the winner’s podium. “I’ve watched so many of my heroes compete out here in past years. To be recognized by them is the best prize. The all-day Padang barrels with only a couple friends out doesn’t hurt too.” With under four minutes remaining in the Final, Brand was sitting in second place behind Clay Marzo (HAW) and needing an 8.84. Brand clawed to the bottom of the thickest wave of the day and sealed the deal with a 9.67. In the end, Brand was hoisted to victory in front of a raucous crowd, followed by Marzo in second place, former WSL World No. 1 Matt Wilkinson in

third place, and the lone local Indonesian surfer to reach the Final, Raditya Rondi, in fourth. “Benji is a kid who is an incredible tube rider,” Fanning said when he announced his selection of Brand. “I’d love to see him at Padang taking it to the boys.” Taking it to the boys is exactly what Brand did. On his run to the title, Brand scored countless amazingly deep tubes, including a 9.67 and 9.5, the two highest wave scores on the day. At the outset, Brand and Marzo looked like the surfers to beat in the event. Brand dominated the morning heats, winning both his Round 1 and 2 heats and posting the highest combined heat total of the opening two rounds. “Today was a dream come true,” Brand said, after being chaired up the beach by his good friends from his adopted North Shore home. “The swell was still pumping on dark. Let’s do it again tomorrow!” 2019 Rip Curl Cup Final Results: 1. Benji Brand (ZAF) 17.94 2. Clay Marzo (HAW) 17.10 3. Matt Wilkinson (AUS) 16.16 4. Raditya Rondi (IND) 12.17
