I remember when we reached 100 editions and someone saying, you have to be proud of getting to 100 of anything. Well, we were proud, but time moves on and here we are in 2019 and it’s 500 editions. Well, where did those decades go? And where did those people go? Things were a lot simpler back in 2000 when we started The Beat magazine. We all spoke to each other more, not via apps, but in person. We took photos of people dancing around at clubs and bars and waited a few days to get the photos developed and back again. Everything seemed to take longer. People were really excited to see themselves in print back in those days. In some ways we were the paparazzi for the common people. This was before Facebook and Instagram had been conceived and we were one of the first to do it. I traveled around a lot back then and didn’t see that much photo action going on anywhere until years later. Funnily, we just stumbled upon it to fill up some pages, a lot like Facebook did a few years later according to the film, Social Network. Anyway, time does move on and we decided just last week to move our photo LIVE FEED from Instagram to our own website, thebeatbali.com. There are a few reasons for this, and it has been planned for some time, but the push came when we realized the social media giant was strangling our engagement by blocking our hashtags on our posts. So here we are at 500 editions of this magazine and now if you want to see the beat LIVE photos you know where to go. We are now in the thick of the Bali high season too. With the changes that have occurred over the past couple of years, namely the entire demo- and geographic shifts that have happened between Kuta, Seminyak, Uluwatu and Canggu areas and the dilution of tourism numbers spreading between those places, this could go down as the lamest high season ever. Or, as is the usual Bali eleventh hour style, just go ballistic and be one of the most the intriguing and crazy yet. Check inside for all the details. Happy Hari Merdeka 2019!

Mitchell Wick.

The DJ. The Model. The Escape

Mitchell Wick has been DJing and travelling around the world modelling the last few years and now has moved to Bali joining up with the Escape Presents crowd to take it to the next level. We caught up before the Wednesday show at La Brisa for a chat. He will be playing ESCAPE again early next month. OK, give us the basics, my man. Name, age and how did you get into electronic and DJing? Mitchell Wick, 33. I have loved music since a young kid. I was always into hip hop and rap, and was always the kid at school with the latest music and CDs everyone wanted! I then discovered a whole new world when I went to Ultra Music Festival in Miami roughly 10 years ago, and then fell in love with electronic music! I went back to Sydney from my trip in the USA and stuck like glue to two of my good mates who were Djing locally to learn as much as possible from them Who were they? Just two good mates from Sydney, Home town, Cronulla. Aaron Smith was my main my influence.

44

www.thebeatbali.com

What was the music you were listening to Miami and how was the experience? When I first got into electronic music Avicii, Swedish House Mafia, Calvin Harris etc were huge and a lot of big room, electro, progressive house stuff was what got me into dance music. But, as I got more involved, learnt more and evolved, I quickly went more into the house and techno scene. Let’s just say I steered away from the main stream stuff and found my niche and that’s where I’ve stayed. Yes there are many facets to electronic music. And it’s a long way to the top if you wanna rock n roll (as one famous Aussie band once said), but having an influence already must be a benefit. Where and when did you fist spin a track?

FEATURE My first ever club gig was at Carmens Nightclub in Sutherland Shire, my home town! When was that? And what have been some of the highlights in your DJ career since then? Gee, testing my memory! That would have been 5-6 years ago at Carmen’s and Sting Bar at Cronulla supporting Bag Raiders around the same time. Playing at Exchange in DLTA was a great experience, one of LA’s biggest house/techno clubs, supporting Cheat Codes. Other different highlights/experiences were playing private parties for top brands like Mont Blanc, Tiffany & Co & Moët Chandon, which of course ties into my modelling side. And how about the modelling, how long have you been doing that and where has that taken you so far? I started five years ago and it’s been full time since. I did the global “GUESS” holiday campaign last year. Travelled to the USA and Europe to shoot campaigns all over. So it was at the same time you started modeling and DJing. Does being a good looking young fella/model have its advantages or are there tribulations when being a DJ? It definitely has its ups and downs! The great thing about Djing with my modelling background and influence is whenever I go for work I can do both, they go hand in hand. I definitely get a lot of DJing work with bigger brands because of my modelling background, which I appreciate. On the flip side, there is always a certain perception of models who DJ as not being genuine and that’s the thinking I really want to break. I want to show people that just because I model it’s not the ONLY thing I do, or I am passionate about! For me the only way I can show that is by proving myself in the music industry by playing and getting myself out there for people to hear me and I’ll work my ass off to do that! There is no easy path and I don’t expect any! Yes, there are no free lunches out there... So have you been producing any music? I’ve dabbled in some production in the past but haven’t been able to fully focus on getting tracks out as I’ve been on the road full-time modelling but now I’m based in Bali and my direction has changed a bit and I’m itching to get into the studio with Kaiser and the Escape lads!

How has your direction changed? I guess I’ve just shifted my focus a bit so I’m not chasing the modelling as much from season to season and rooting myself in Bali to work on building my DJ career and having a better overall balance. How did you meet and get involved with the Escape boys? What do you expect to get out of the union? We met through a mutual friend (Jack Kennedy) who introduced me a few years back. I played for them at Red Ruby and now I’m back on the island and excited to be linking up again! My goal is to push and challenge myself to take my DJing to a professional level and with the Escape crew’s guidance I believe we can achieve this together! I don’t expect anything to come easy or free because of my following or influence as a model, though. When can we see you at Escape and what can we expect? My first gig was the sunset set at La Brisa on Wednesday and the next Escape show is in a couple of weeks, September 7. I’ll be bringing some deep melodic house vibes to that show too! www.thebeatbali.com

Ubud Village Jazz Festival The island’s biggest jazz festival returns next week on the 16th – 17th of August

The Ubud Village Jazz Festival is known for showcasing sub genres for all Jazz enthusiasts, starting from traditional to contemporary and fusion, funk, smooth Jazz, Latin Jazz all through to rhythm & blues. This seventh year’s line-up dazzles with some of the best talents going, including artists from Indonesia’s thriving Jazz scene as well as international stars from around the globe. We caught up with organiser and great Jazz pianist in her own right, Astrid Sulaiman to find out a little bit more on what to expect this year.

What are the highlights of this edition of the festival? As usual, the musicians themselves were well curated by the organisers and stay within the Jazz guidelines (not being too mixed with other genres) and the stage layout will have different designs again this year although it happens at the same place. Describe the venue and what punters can expect when they get there. We have three stages (Padi, Giri, Subak) which have Balinese local wisdom. Padi is the symbol

46

www.thebeatbali.com

of rice farming, Giri is the symbol of Mount Agung with its gigantic size, Subak represents the water system which Balinese use for their farming. We have more than 35 booths for food and beverages, handycrafts, wardrobe, kids corner, bar, etc.

And how about the road show this week, any particular big one we should look out for? We have 14 pre-post events around Bali. Please come to one of the shows. Each one is a different line up and experience. Definitely check out Sthala on the 15th of August with award-winning Sri Hanuraga Trio feat. Dira J Sugandi and 14 Aug at Tandjung Sari with the highly acclaimed Aaron Goldberg Trio from the US (our highlight artist this year) as well as Aryaduta Bali with Voyager 4. They are a French Jazz Rock group. I’ve seen their performance before which is amazing! And the futures of Jazz; 13-yearold pianists Jacob Jayasena and Nadine. Make sure you get along to the pre-festival and festival shows next week. Sounds like it’s going to be a splendid week of incredible Jazz! Tix and more at ubudvillagejazzfestival.com.

Exploring the charming highlands of

WEST PAPUA Discover outrageously gorgeous scenery in this remote, most eastern Indonesian province. The attractions here are primarily natural. To get to all the wonders and gems hidden inland, enter through provincial capital Jayapura, contemporary Indonesian city with limited charms, but this is where you obtain all the permits necessary for exploring the more remote regions. Head for the mountains! An hour flight away on a propeller plane you find yourself in the gateway to the Baliem valley, the charming mountain town of Wamena. It’s a home of the fascinating Dani tribespeople and even though the traditional attire is becoming rare in the town itself, trek into the countryside and you’ll start feeling like you landed in a National Geographic documentary, with men wearing not much more but penis gourds (Kotekas).

48

www.thebeatbali.com

Trekking in the Baliem valley is world-class and the scenery jaw dropping. Hiking is quite challenging and often very muddy, but experiencing the charm of the mountain villages, meeting friendly local people and sleeping in thatched huts and feasting on the sweet potatoes (national meal of the highlands) before you hit the hay, creates some very special memories. The valley is hemmed in by steep green mountain walls and cut by the raging muddy Baliem river. Do not expect much creature comforts. During the trek, you will negotiate food & the simplest accommodation with the village tribes and you should definitely stock up on snacks for the hike in Wamena, once you leave the town the amenities are very limited.

FEATURE Consider a side trip to a very remote and very stunning Habbema Lake, the routes are muddy and you need a 4WD to get there. We kept hitting a dead end as nobody wanted to rent a car to three bule girls, once we said where we were intending to take it. The dirt, beatup road up to the lake can hardly even be considered that and is notoriously bad. We finally lucked out and negotiated a trip with the official tourism office in Wamena, which is not even something they regularly do and it made it all the more hilarious, as the entire office ensemble packed up, locked the office for the day and left with us on a trip. Something kind of unthinkable where we’re from in the

West. As adventurous as we would like to think we are, braving the roads, which basically turn into a river bed after a heavy rain, wasn’t our idea of a good time and we were thankful we had a driver. It does take an effort to get there, as the car has to navigate the difficult terrain at an excruciatingly low speed and oh boy is it bumpy! But the lake itself and the area surrounding it, possesses an almost otherworldly vibe that is difficult to capture in words. As the fiery sun sets over the lake and we and our friendly guides were the only people there, surrounded by the Avatar looking like special flora and chirping birds of many unique species, it felt all too surreal. Some call West Papua the last frontier, and even though tourism has reached this remote region and it is far from being an on your own adventure, it still provides a sense of adventure very few destinations in the world van offer. THE BEAT CANGGU

SACRED GROUND CAFÉ The spacious café features three distinctly different areas clustered around a laneway, so you will always find a comfy spot and avoid people with no apparent intentions to ever give up their seats. Well-made espresso drinks from premium Revolver Beans and gourmet brekkies, lunch and dinners make this a rare find in otherwise very touristy area, where all the other mediocre options blend together. Australian owned, it guarantees that perfect Avo toast topped with poached eggs, but they also have all kinds of other naughty (hello fluffy pancakes with ice cream) and healthyish (you can never go wrong with fresh tropical fruit salad) items on the brekkie menu. Grab a premium burger or one of their freshly tossed salads for lunch and for dinner, we can’t recommend the Wood Fired Oven Pizza enough. It’s like a trip to Italy without having to leave Bali. Pairs perfectly with the largest selection of craft bears imported from all over the world (they stock the legendary Deschutes brewery craft beers from Oregon). If that hasn’t convinced you yet, this place also has a very reasonable noise levels and is great for all kinds of meetings. They won’t give you a stinky eye if you bring your laptop, they’ve got a free wifi, just be aware of the fact that there is no AC, so be prepared to cool yourself off with a lots of iced drinks.

FLOOK the label Flook the Label is influenced by Bali’s active lifestyle and epitomes everything that we love about this exotic paradise. It’s feminine, colorful and fits perfectly with the relaxed Bali way of life. This playful brand is a brainchild of a British designer Nikki Flook. Nikki literally stumbled across this charming island a few years ago, while exploring the planet on a round the world ticket. As it often happens with Bali, the island has this magical pull for many, so it wasn’t long until she felt inspired enough to start creating her own designs here. She specializes in feminine girly lingerie, swimwear and custom-made leather products. Best characterized as an eclectic mix of sports luxe with a hippy Ibiza twist by the designer herself, her creations quickly gained popularity and you can see the island babes frolicking around in her designs, especially around the uber-popular and hip Canggu area. Fascinated by the progressive palette of her native London, the designer finds new ways

to present looks that surpass the trend driven catwalks of the world. ‘‘I find great inspiration every time I come to Bali. It’s an amazing creative hub of people, so I would find it hard not to be inspired when I visit here. But I still have a strong love and respect for my home in the UK’’, the designer commented to the beat on what sparks her creativity. DJ Story #9 Bali Resident DJ’s DJ Halim Ardie USA/Indonesia Hi Halim, when did you become a Bali resident DJ? I moved to Bali from Jakarta five years ago to start a career in event organization, and during that time I played for the events that we threw. Around three years ago enough DJ gigs were coming in to make the switch to full-time DJ, which has been very rewarding as I’ve met and shared the decks with many of my DJ heroes. I don’t think this could have happened anywhere else besides magical Bali. Tell us your background in music. I grew-up in a household that loved music. Every member of my family loved some different genre. At the time I was into metal & rock, but slowly began to love electronic music because of acts like the Prodigy, Chemical Brothers and Faithless, which my older siblings introduced me to. From there my passion for electronic music evolved into DJ’ing.

Favourite styles to spin? I love house music and all the different subgenres that have evolved from it. Current Bali residencies Omnia.. Plus I am one of the main organizers for Rainforest Pavilion at Wonderfruit Festival Thailand. (complete the sentence) .. “I love to play in Bali because ....” .. it has given me so many opportunities, especially getting to make a living doing my hobby and playing other people’s songs! give you that picture-perfect, romantic getaway feeling. To go with that sensation, they offer an extensive menu featuring guilty pleasures, fresh seafood and a few dishes to get you feeling in the right mood!

We feasted on the 300gr Local Lobster (375k) and Sea Salt Crusted Whole Fish (385k) which is baked then de-crusted in front of you, leaving an extremely moist and tender piece of fish for your savourable enjoyment.

We started with some freshly shucked Oysters (160k), crispy Calamari (145k) and a divine Snapper Ceviche (145k), alongside a healthy detoxifying juice and a kelapa muda (coconut juice). The view of the Oysters resting on their plate with the clear blue water just a stone’s throw away is a sight to behold! Karma Beach represents that Mediterranean, laid back Greek vibe, honing in on the serenity and easy-going style. This ethos can be seen throughout the menu and sets quite a beautiful tone for a date. We continued our journey with some classic beach-club bites such as the Dynamite Sushi (200k) and the Rock Shrimp Pizza (290k), which then led us to the exciting grill section.

We were left with almost no space after that incredible feast… But luckily, I had a second stomach reserved especially for the dessert we were about to indulge in next, my date however, was sprawled on the floor begging for mercy. I ordered the Rolled Baklava (145k) and the Portokalopia (105k), both of which have a Greece heritage and we couldn’t have ended our Date for 2 on a sweeter note!

CHEF?

Chef: Topan Looking for a great feed while venturing the fun and florescent streets of Kuta? Swing by Ikimura, a newly opened Japanese steakhouse on the iconic Kuta Beach strip! Running the show is Chef Topan, who proudly served up a mean, keto keen dish; Prime Wagyu Striploin Steak (250k++). The dish was presented on a hotplate, with which they also provided a handy apron for you to rock in order to avoid the sizzle and splatter of this superbly grilled, well done, 200 grams of goodness. Great steaks are a hit and miss deal here in Bali, but we’ve got to say… this incredibly tender and juicy dish was adhering to the restaurant’s motto;“Quality meat, freshly cut”, Also accompanied with a bed of broccoli, bean sprouts, corn and a perfect touch of soy butter. Tender, tasty and definitely super value for money; we highly recommend this Ikimura dish! Thanks chef!

CD REVIEW

dreamy nightmares

Thom Yorke Anima It’s been a rough run of late for Thom Yorke, beginning in late 2015 with the breakup of his 23 year long marriage to Rachel Owen and her subsequent death to cancer at age 48 a year later, not to mention sustained periods of crippling writer’s block that have plagued the Oxford eccentric throughout his last few solo albums. As if that wasn’t enough, Yorke was reportedly held to ransom to the tune of £150,000 by an anonymous collector, who had threatened to leak a series of bootleg minidiscs from the OK Computer sessions circa 1997. Nevertheless, the Radiohead front man has ploughed on gamely, finally releasing his most completesounding solo work in years. Preceded by a subversive viral marketing poster campaign for “Anima Technologies” (a company claiming to be able to recover lost dreams

with a ‘dream camera’), and a mind-bending 15-minute Netflix movie of the same name directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, “Anima” finds Yorke in fine end-of-the-world form. Icy beats, digital blips and defibrillating pulses dominate, as to be expected, but there’s also a warmth synth-y element that permeates the album – most noticeable on the gorgeous “Dawn Chorus” and shuffling funk of “I Am A Very Rude Person”. Even the sparse lead single “Not The News” feels cozy in the same sort of way that 2007’s pay-what-you-like “In Rainbows” did. With “Anima”, things seem to be looking up for Yorke - let’s hope this marks the beginning of a new, sunnier outlook for him. Dan Ashcroft
