Ozzie Wright
Wins Uluwatu Single Fin Classic
In a magnificent climax to the 2nd annual Uluwatu Single Fin Classic last weekend at Bali’s iconic Uluwatu, Australia’s Ozzie Wright had the honor of hoisting the perpetual Championship Trophy from atop a stage set up at the Single Fin Bar, joined by his fellow finalists and the cheers of the thousands of spectators, friends, competitors and the event crew that gathered for this unique and vibrant event in celebration of single fin surfing! “It’s just nice to have this as a celebration of like, I don’t know, life and how much I love Uluwatu,” said Ozzie just before being called
46

up to stage. “This is my most favorite place in the whole world…I really didn’t care about winning, just being out there with all the guys, good kinship, and being able to express myself, the froth that I feel for life, is what it’s all about really.” And he certainly did all of that. During the final, Single Fin’s Tai Graham, together with Chris Binns, Jared Mell, Billy Hangen, Vaughan Blakey, and local lifeguard legend Toska, all were on the microphones revving up the crowd, calling the surfers into waves, and being both raucous and astute as they shared their views and experiences with the audience.
FEATURE
At one point about 10 minutes into the final, when surfer after surfer took off blazing down the Racetrack line, pulling into to closeout after closeout and just getting smashed, Chris Binns called out “A wipeout fest never looked so good!” Followed by “Dare we say this is the best single fin event in the world?” Tough to argue with that. And it was truly a tough call to decide which was more entertaining sometimes…the commentary or the surfing. The grand prize for the event champion was an air ticket to join the 2020 Burleigh Single Fin Festival, now a sister event to the Uluwatu
Single Fin Classic, but seeing how Ozzie is already in Australia, Tai Graham and Made Kasim from Single Fin made the generous decision to give air tickets to both Agus “Blacky” Setiawan and Dex Scoot for their amazing performances in the event. The look on the boys faces when he announced they were going to Australia was priceless. The top four results were: 1. Ozzie Wright (AUS) – 18.0 points 2. Chippa Wilson (AUS) – 17.03 points 3. Agus “Blacky” Setiawan (IDN) – 15.63 points 4. Bruno Santos (BRA) – 15.33 points

DJ Story #10 Bali Resident DJ’s Niina Sweden
Hi Niina, when did you become a Bali resident DJ? Early 2000. Tell us your background in music Since a small girl music has been central to my life. Dancing to Abba under the table, spending hours in mixing rooms and radio stations with my father who was a sound engineer on Finnish Radio. Later on, an interest in the turntables brought them to my living room along with 90’s dance music. Clubbing and events became more prominent in my “living room”. Learning mixing techniques by myself, driving the neighbours crazy! .. From the Double Six era of early 2000’s, the hobby became a non-stop journey until today, playing the club circuit in Bali, SE Asia, Middle East, Australia and occasionally Europe during my travels home to Sweden. Favourite styles to spin?
Deep house, tech house, techno, and various eclectic directions. Current Bali residencies Ku De Ta, Red Ruby. (complete the sentence) .. “I love to play in Bali because ....” of it’s various choices of venues, ever changing travellers from all over the world. The endless summer. Thank you Niina. See you around the island. Where can we follow you? www.mixcloud.com/djniina www.facebook.com/niinadj www.instagram.com/niinadj www.twitter.com/djniina www.soundcloud.com/djniina

OFFAIAH UK DJ and producer Offaiah has been on a solid journey through the global club scene since his release of “Trouble” in 2016 with Universal. Born and bred in East London, Offaiah garnered the support of the industry heavyweights through his productions and even had a few remixes made by acts like Calvin Harris & Deadmau5 in late 2018. He was one of the headlining DJs at Finns Beach Club alongside Mark Knight and Disciples last weekend, and really got the Grand Opening party rocking! We caught up with Offaiah to talk about house music, touring and more, just moments before his set at Finns Beach Club!
Let’s start off with something easy. What are some of your favourite parties you have performed at in the summer of 2019 so far? I’ve been lucky enough to have played at lots of cool venues this summer. A few which spring to mind are Ushuaia Ibiza, where I got to warm up for Calvin Harris, Ibiza Rocks, where I got to warm up for MK and I have to mention my set at Defected Croatia which took place on a boat where I got to play alongside Simon Dunmore and Sam Divine. All these parties were sick in their own way but the thing that they all had in common was the crazy-mad up-for-it crowd who really made the party what it was, and that was simply unforgettable.
52
www.thebeatbali.com
Boom, that sounds great. Tell us about your relationship with Asia and what do you think of the music scene in this part of the world? I’ve played in Asia quite a number of times now and every time I’ve been I’ve been totally amazed by the amount of love that there is for house and tech-house music. People normally associate those genres with North America and Western Europe but its definitely a thriving scene in Asia and I can’t wait to get back there. Ok, let’s talk house music. How did you get into it? I’ve always been into music as my father is a piano teacher but I never thought I’d end up making music for a living. One day I happened
FEATURE to be hanging out at my sister’s boyfriend’s house who has a studio, I was messing around on the piano while he was in the kitchen making a sandwich and all of a sudden he ran in asking what I was playing. I said it was something I had just made up on the spot and from there we managed to turn it in to a full song which ended up being my first release which went top 40 in the UK charts. It all started there and I haven’t looked back since. Awesome again! Where, and how was it, the first time you played at a big open-air festival? You may know that over the years I’ve produced and DJ’ed under a few different aliases, and one of the first open-air festivals I got to play at under one of those previous names was Electric Zoo Festival in New York – it was a totally amazing experience where I got to play in front of a good 40,000+ crowd. As OFFAIAH my first open air was the Sundance Festival in Slovakia earlier this year – I got an amazing reaction from the crowd and I really look forward to playing that festival again. Your tracks “Work It Out” and “Somewhere Special” on Defected records are straight bangers! Fitting perfectly to the record labels sound. Will we be seeing anymore Offaiah releases soon on DFT? Yes, that’s the plan. I’ve just finished and road-tested two records which are perfect for Defected and I’m currently in talks with them about which one we’ll release first and when etc. You’ll have to watch this space. What can we expect to see from you in the coming months? We heard about your release on Subjekt called “What I Grew Up On’’. Yes I’ve done a collaboration with the housemusic artist BACATME called “What I Grew Up On” and we signed it to Subjekt a few months back and it’s due to be released August 23rd of this year, so really looking forward to that. Then I’m just working on the schedule of my releases for the remainder of the year but it will most likely consist of a release on Defected, a release on my own label ALL FIRE Records and probably one more on a well established housemusic label. You recently put out a full club edit for your ‘Love Me’ track that came out on Sonny Fodera’s
Solotoko label and we hear it’s getting some nice support across BBC Radio 1 and plays on Spotify. How’s that going now? Yes the “Love Me” release is going really well, it’s had a lot of support which is really nice to see. Sonny loves the record so much that he’s considering producing his own remix of it so I’m looking forward to seeing what he does with it. There’s also a BACATME Remix waiting in the wings too so keep an eye out for that. Talk to us about what kind of vibe you’re about to give us here at Finns Beach Clubs Grand Opening party!? I’m about to “house” the place up real good, with some cool summer-vibe house-music as well as lots of my own brand new remixes and productions which no one has heard as of yet so people will be getting brand new music fresh off the press. Will no doubt throw one or two cheeky bootlegs in there too for good measure. Finally, can you name us a track that you like to finish your sets with? Yeah I love to end on “Joys” by Roberto Surace – it’s such a fun summer song and always gets a great reaction from the crowd. Some deep melodic house vibes to that show too!

This year’s annual Ubud Village Jazz festival was hosted at the timeless gardens of the Arma Museum of Art, showcasing an eclectic line up of international and local talents. I witnessed a truly a breathtaking evening of world class talent, performing on three different stages to an audience of around 2,000 on its final day. Notable acts included Eurasian Quartet featuring Dian Pratiwi, who graced us with her fierce, show stopping energy that held us through ballads and renditions.
the Aaron Goldberg Trio with Matt Penman and Leon Parker that brought their jazz flavors of New York to the heart of Ubud. The festival also featured various booths displaying local crafts, fashion, instruments and delightful food and beverages. Ubud Village Jazz festival is a must go for music enthusiasts. The flow of energy through the bohemian atmosphere amongst Arma Museum’s distinct Balinese architecture is the set for a perfect occasion.

Indonesian Culinary Workshop 2019 The Scholars of Sustenance proudly hosted an Indonesian culinary workshop at the Stones Hotel Legian Bali! Where the Marriot professionals were challenged to cook for 80 members of the SOS community using only surplus food (food that would have gone to waste otherwise). It was a day of smiles, and most importantly, The Marriot Culinary Team being led by the Stones Hotel showed everybody that using zero waste is a total possibility. SOS is a Food Rescue Foundation and even all the surplus food after this event was then donated and distributed to the communities in need around the island. If you are a restaurant owner, hotel supplier or even a cook at home, try and implement the zero-waste mentality to your home or venue.

We kicked off our date with a quick dip in the pool combined with one of the Mrs Sippy signature cocktails, the Sippy Tiki (140k) – a spiced rum and sparkling wine-based cocktail, refreshed and shaken with raspberry, passionfruit, lime, pomelo and topped off with red bull. An absolute kick-start to our date! We continued with one of their poolside classic dishes, the Baja Fish Tacos (120k) and the ultimate classic pizza, the Margherita (110k) – which was cooked to perfection, crunchy on the outside, cheesy on the inside! After the sip, dip and bite we opted for a table on the far side of the pool so we could have our privacy. A tantalizing duo from the wood fire grill streamed out of the open-air kitchen and
landed on the table. The most tender Octopus (190k) and fresh Tiger Prawns (230k) both with their own chimichurri sauce and combining magically with the Charred Cauliflower (110k) and Tomato & Burrata Salad (120k) we had as our sides. Just yum! We ended our wonderful afternoon of swimming, dancing and feasting at Mrs Sippy with a kiss goobye until our next Date for 2.

Macallan to Rock
VI AI PI Barman: Ardi
We drove down the party packed Legian strip to Vi Ai Pi, a hard to miss Kuta favorite located at the heart of all its hype. With vibrant blue LED lights surrounding the bar, our evening began in the hands of Barman Ardi, whipping up a new Vi Ai Pi signature, “Macallan to Rock”. Macallan as in the name of today’s cocktail? We’re off to a great start already! Ardi popped a number of ingredients into the potion, beginning with the 12 year old single malt scotch, coffee liqueur, a shot of espresso and a splash of brown cocoa liqueur, shaking up a “Macallan to Rock” martini cocktail. At first sip, you’re taken to tastes of a slow dance between smooth espresso and the rich dried fruit notes from the Macallan. It’s the kind of drink you’d sip slowly after sundown, immersing into the cool touch on your lips and subtly warm rushes through your body. The cherry was a perfect touch of sweetness after finishing the Vi Ai Pi class in a glass special.

ART
a ceremony of colour an immersive installation at OMNIA DAYCLUB BALI Aug 31 – Sept 29 2019 Omnia Dayclub is going to be transformed into a beacon of Bali culture during September and you are all invited to experience it. The ceremony of colour is an immersive creative installation that was inspired by the rich traditions of the Balinese ceremony, and being one of Bali’s most stylish day clubs, the installation in Omnia will be delivered with a contemporary twist. The art project is a collaboration with Bali based creative studio Atelier Seni and executed by Petals by Puri, the ceremony of colour installation features over 4,000 handcrafted pieces creating a transformational immersive experience throughout OMNIA Bali. Atelier Seni’s Ines Katamso describes her inspiration: “I was inspired by traditional Balinese decoration that is used in everyday life like offerings or on special occasions for “hari raya”. These ornamentations are usually made by hand from palm leaves called lontar, for this project I wanted to combine traditional techniques with modern materials so I mixed it with a digital drawing that has been printed on recyclable paper to create a contemporary interpretation of traditional decorations. The

pattern is a modern twist of popular flora paintings that we can find in a Balinese house”. For the installation OMNIA has collaborated with local craftsmen and women to create: 2 hand crafted barong Ket heads (the mythical creature, symbol of good spirit) that will greet visitors at the entrance to OMNIA. A centrepiece 1.5m x 6m dragon (naga) called Antaboga (the world serpent, the name now translates literally as ‘endless wealth’) 500 handmade contemporary penjor hanging above the dance floor and main deck 10 large penjor sculptures throughout the main deck of OMNIA. 800 classic “keris lontar” creating a bespoke DJ booth installation. This is surely going to be an art installation not to be missed for both visitors to the island and locals alike. Visit OMNIA throughout September to sample ‘a ceremony of colour’ in all its colourful glory. OMNIA is open 7 days a week from 11am daily, closing times vary (check with venue).
