The contents of this tropical Indonesian island are just as unusual as its shape. The splay limbs of the island are washed by turquoise ocean waters teeming with live coral and aquatic life, while its interior is mountainous and jungled. Sulawesi’s beguiling cultures, long isolated by the impenetrable topography from the invasion of modernity, are thriving inland. We set out to explore the fascinating traditional culture of Toraja people, with their elaborate funeral ceremonies and mesmerizing architecture. The central region of Tana Toraja is also a home to some of Sulawesis’ most spectacular landscapes. Visiting Toraja is an assault on all the senses. The intricately carved, colorful houses with boat shaped roofs are surrouned by towering emerald green rice paddies and protected by the ragged mountains.

www.thebeatbali.com
To reach Rantepao - the cultural center of Toraja region – you have to be prepared to endure an eight hour long bus ride from the capital of Sulawasi - Makassar. All the cultural and natural gems are scattered around the capital. The Ke’te Kesu’ village features four perfectly preserved “Tongkonans” – traditional houses and on the cliff face behind the village, you’ll find some of the oldest hanging and cave graves, some allegedly over five hundred years old. The sight feels quite macabre as some of the hanging coffins suspended on beams have collapsed and fallen into jumbles of skulls and bones. Londa is the largest burial cave site, enter if you’re thin and not claustrophobic to see some haphazardly placed skeletons, stalactites and stalagmites formations inside the cave.
FEATURE Speaking of the macabre – while in Rantepao, you absolutely must visit a local funeral. It is socially more important event than a wedding for Torajans and the deceased’s corpses continue to remain part of the family. Some of them still observe the old custom of never leaving the dead alone and bring them food four times a day out of respect. This ritual goes on until the official funeral can be held, which can be months from the day the person passed away as family members gather from near and far. Torajans preserve the bodies with formaldehyde which eventually causes them to mummify. The unique death practices of Torajans are obscured in mystery as there is not much evidence about its origins.
The funeral itself is a macabre event and not one for the faint of heart. We literally stepped over freshly butchered pigs and water buffalos as the buffalo is believed to be the vehicle to the afterlife. For the most prominent members of the Toraja society, the event can be even a week long. Must visit is the main market Pasar Bolu at Rantepao – the largest water buffalo market in the world. Buffalo is for Torajans what fancy cars are for some Westerners – a status symbol. It is also a pretty fitting analogy, as some of these majestic animals cost more than a regular car. The buffalos are imported from all over the world and most of them are slated to be slaughtered at the funeral ceremonies. The adjacent traditional market is a feast for your senses with all the colorful produce and fragrant spices. Go stroll and bargain in the morning when the markets are buzzing. Toraja feels like an otherworldly place and offers so many special experiences it is no wonder it is high on the bucket list for so many. www.thebeatbali.com

DJ Story #11 Bali Resident DJ’s Michael Vagas aka Mike Wild
Switzerland
Hi Michael, when did you become a Bali resident DJ? 2005. I started in Double Six, Dejavu, Sky Garden & Ocean Beach Club. Tell us your background in music. In the 1990’s “Dancefloor Syndroma” was starting it’s Music Revolution with Djaimin and Mr. Mike, bringing the best DJs from all around the world. They also had “Pump It Up” weekly show on Couleurs3 Swiss Radio, transmitting all the parties live. I was in love with this new sound and the creative movement from the party scene. We had the luck to hear DJs Tony Humphries, Frankie Knuckles, Laurent Garnier, Sven Vath, Carl Cox, Mauro Picotto, Gianni Parrini, Willow, DJ Energy, playing every weekend in Mad Club Lausanne, with after-parties in Club Neuchatel, Oxa Zurich or Casino Montreux. Life was great and moving fast. I had some of the best party feelings and the chance to follow, help and learn from DJ Massive who was in the 90’s Swiss rave industry. I learned DJ
skills with him and played for opening raves as DJ S’Moon K .. Then I moved to Sydney (1996-97) where I played a few clubs and finished top 5 in the 1997 NSW DJ competition. Favourite styles to spin? House, techno, rave, psychedelic. Current Bali residencies Red Ruby Club. (complete the sentence) .. “I love to play in Bali because ....” the poolside and clubs are open 364 days a year and the people are warm, happy and life is fantastic! smoothie shop & breakfast bar Words & Photos by Vero We’re told breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Nowhere does that saying ring truer than at Smoothie shop. If you have a breakfast meeting with a herbivore, take them there – no one’s taste buds are going to be disappointed. The plant based food here is actually really satisfying and most importantly: it’s flavour packed! They have a bunch of different egg dishes and pretty smoothie bowls – you will see many people trying to take pics of them with their advanced iPhones. If you didn’t get “influenced” by seeing too many photos of #smashedavocado in your Instagram feed, we do recommend you try the Smoothie shop one. Level of attractiveness: millions. It comes adorned with edible purple pea flowers and you absolutely have to add their specialty: Herbed Haloumi, you will thank us later. Also, eggs at Smoothie shop are always poached to perfection, we find that to be a rarity in Bali. So, for all of you breakfast connoisseurs, this place is a must visit. Coffee snobs won’t be disappointed either. On top of having killer specialty coffee and a madly skilled barista, they also offer the largest menu of coffee specials – it features everything from trendy Yellow Turmeric and Pink Beetroot Lattes to unusual ones, such as Crème Brulle or real Lavender Latte. They also accommodate vegans and gluten-free folks, but you don’t have to be either to find your favorite at Smoothie shop. To top it all off, the cafe feels incredibly cozy, nestled on a small elevated wooden patio surrounded by tropical vegetation.

Brazilian Aussie Butcher Shop and Grill Now Open Brazilian Aussie BBQ in Seminyak has become an institution for meat eaters, both living in and coming to Bali on holidays, since opening over three years ago. Their churrasco style skewers have been well received. The slices of meat that come around the tables on the skewers only ends when guests put up the red flag, which means no more. It’s a fun concept, but you have to be careful not to eat too much. Now they have a new option, making it easier for all quality meat lovers to get their share of a fine cut of tender steak. The rib-eye, tenderloin, Scotch fillet steaks and all the rest of the pork, lamb and more beef cuts can be selected and grilled on the grill right in front of the butcher shop. Yes, that’s right, there is now a fully-fledged Aussie butcher shop on the premises. Brazilian Aussie BBQ has always imported their own quality meats but now have gone a step further by opening the butcher shop and processing the meat right there. They also have sausages, bacon and other butcher items available. The shop is open seven days a week from 10am to 10pm for retail, but cooking times are only in the evening from 4 to 8pm. There is a charge of Rp 100k for the cooking and sides, which includes all the goodies from the salad bar inside. However, there is a special opening promotion to wet your palate and we asked Stephen, manager at Brazil Aussie what that promo was all about. “Well, for a maximum of two people with a minimum spend of Rp 300k you
48
www.thebeatbali.com
will receive free cooking, two sides and two glasses of Two Islands wine free,” says the gracious UK manager. That sounds like the perfect way to give the grill a go. We did give it a try last week and the choice of meats coming from the brand new facility, which features ‘state of the art’ freezer and chiller rooms out the back and the butcher displays at the front. It also comes complete with an ‘also imported’ in-house Aussie butcher. Now, you can’t go wrong there! The well-marbled cuts we chose from the display were grilled before us and came out tender and tasty. We didn’t even bother with the sides, just feed the man meat. Sometimes that’s all you need with a pinch of sea salt on top, but definitely washed down with a good Aussie red wine. (There are a many well-priced imported wines on the list). Next time you are looking for a good meat fix, there is now even more reason to give Brazilian Aussie BBQ the nod.

and His long way from Home. Performing in Japan each year, Bali-based, Kiwi singer-songwriter Phil Stoodley revels in the country’s culture, people and landscapes. Inspired to share his experiences, his latest music video “Long Way From Home” was shot on Tokyo’s buzzing streets and sprawling cityscape over three blue-knuckled winter nights earlier this year. Capturing Tokyo’s better-known highlights along with urban hideaways where culture shines and stories are written, the video “Long Way From Home” follows Phil’s journey from rooftops to sake bars, alleyways and taxi rides. We follow Phil on his solo trail, soaking up the sights and sounds that soon feel familiar on foreign soil. “Long Way From Home” is an acoustic pop/folk song about refection, love, loss, self-discovery, and finding a home within yourself while walking new paths. Phil produced and recorded the song in New Zealand and it appears on his previously released debut album ‘No Surprise’. “Tokyo is so rich in food, fashion and culture with

amazing scenery. And the people are wonderful, sweet and very polite. Sometimes it feels like you’re on another planet. Japan is by far one of my most favourite places to travel, and would have seemed a waste not to take advantage of the location to shoot a music video,” Stoodley told The Beat. It won’t be long before Phil is back in the ski fields of Japan entertaining action sport-heads over there, while playing multiple drinking games and his guitar of course. But his true love is the music and expressing himself through the video process. Check his latest track on Youtube or through most good streaming services. Just search ‘Long Way From Home’. The video was co-directed and shot by Anatole Papafilippou and edited by Shae Sterling. While you are there, check out Phil’s latest moves into electronica in the name of Skaker Zulu. Well worth the spin. You could also catch Phil playing in a number of venues around town through the week including Como Resort and Old Man’s among many others.

Not to worry though, because they have moved to an even better location just down the street in front of The Taman Aya Hotel, perfectly visible from both sides of the corner and with ample parking space in the hotel’s car park. After 10 years the move was imminent, but thankfully everything you know and love about Gourmet Café has kept to its true nature. With this new refreshed look, the kitchen has modified with some fantastic new options for lunch and dinner but kept the ever popular create your salad/sandwich section and now has a full bar inside. Metis Jl. Petitenget No.6, Kerobokan Kelod, Kuta Utara, Bali.
Out of the multitude of beautiful restaurants you can go to on a date in Bali, Metis is a longstanding favourite amongst expats, travellers and diners with good taste. The French – Mediterranean inspired cuisine features a varied menu of traditionally classic French dishes with a contemporary twist set in an elegant, comfy ambiance. Flawless service in one of Bali’s most sophisticated settings to be fair, Metis’ atmosphere is just the beginning of the seduction into the depths of the five senses. Chef Nicolas “Doudou” Tourneville and Executive Chef Dove Sudarsana have created a masterful menu to accentuate the setting, taking French cuisine to the next level, especially since introducing a more contemporary aspect to the dinner menu, staying true to the fine dining presentation yet sticking to quite a reasonably priced selection of food.

Upon entry, we were escorted to one of the outside terrace tables, where the grandiose view of the garden set the perfect scene for our date. A quick run through the menu and we spotted some of the old favourites on the menu like the La Terrine de Foie Gras and Le Fillet de Bouef which are delightful, but we were more than excited to try some of the new, sure to be, delicious options. To start off we decided to keep it super healthy with the Le Panier de Crudités (115k) a combination of raw organic vegetables with a strong selection of dips, followed by some classically French frog legs, Les Cuisses de Grenouille (155k) breaded and served with an amazing parsley coulis sauce. We devoured them in seconds and moved over to the bar
FOOD Metis never disappoints, and might well be the most romantic location in the area. To end our wonderful date, we had to finish off on a sweet note and what could possibly better the Pista Choc Souffle (85k), a dark chocolate souffle with an amazing pistachio sauce, orange marmalade and coconut parfait? I couldn’t think of anything to be honest. in between courses, to check out bartender Wanu’s epic liqueur creations. Wanu offers some of the best cocktails on the island, with his home-made selection of spirits in which he only showcases on special events. Ask him to show you, you won’t be disappointed. After getting a little bit tipsy, my date and I were so excited for what we had lined up to eat. We chose to share three plates including the iconic Mediterranean seafood soup, La Bouillabaisse (275k), Le Jarret d’Agneau (265k), a slow cooked lamb shank (a favourite of the evening), but the most magical of the three had to be La Caille (265k), a roasted, duck-stuffed quail that left us speechless with its presentation and flavours.

What Do You Recommend,
CHEF?
RYOSHI Ryoshi Special Set Chef: Sagon Togasa
Here in Bali, we’re spoilt with culinary choice, especially when it comes to the vibrant, abundance of Asian food. Though on the more specific note of Japanese food, we can all undoubtedly agree that Ryoshi has always been one of the island’s paragons. Celebrating a remarkable 26 years of service, we were excited to see what they had in store for this edition of Chef’s Recommendation! As we entered the sliding doors into the traditional Japanese atmosphere and tatami seating area, we were warmly greeted by Dwi, a member of the founding Ryoshi family, who served up The Ryoshi Special Set (115k). This particular set provided an array of classic all-star Japenese dishes and sides; Chicken teriyaki, mixed tempura, agedashi tofu, tamagoyaki, side salad, miso soup, sesame beans as well as eggplant in miso and soyu dressing. Every selection on this set had us indulging in flavours that revolved around comfort and simplicity, in which still stays true to the restaurant’s 26 year vision. All in all, Ryoshi brings in a cozy atmosphere, enriches it’s famous flavors through fresh and local produce, all for amazing value. You won’t be left wondering as to how and why they’ve expanded into six branches around the island throughout 2.5 decades!

MANISH’S ZODIAC PREDICTIONS The Beat astrologer Manish Kumar Arora reads into the next two weeks. Aries ( 21 March – 19 April )
Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July )
It should turn out to be a prosperous period for you. You will receive many surprises, mostly pleasant. You need to keep your speech and communications positive and non offensive throughout to ensure you do not suffer any setbacks due to your words, written or spoken. A steamy love affair is in the wind for eligible Aries, something which is likely to see you getting a complete makeover in everything that you value in life. You will probably accomplish what you set out to do, but what you need is patience—and the determination to overcome the challenges. Favorable Dates : 9, 10, 15 Favorable Colors : Red & Blue
This is an auspicious time for projects demanding endurance or tolerance. There can be stronger awareness of your responsibilities, or new responsibilities fall into your laps. You have a masterful grasp of organisation, so be sure to keep all your schedules together and properly annotated. Emotions may be cooled, and you can appear to be unsympathetic. There can be some loneliness or starkness felt. Expect partnership and marital relations to be rather prickly. Others will stand in your way if you try to get to the bottom of things. Favorable Dates : 8, 11, 17 Favorable Colors : Purple & Yellow
Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )
Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )
This marks a period in which you can attain what you have worked for, and when your seniority and personal power is at its peak. Your inherent tendency toward expansive gestures will be enhanced. If you are prudent you will overcome whatever physical obstacles block your path. You will be inclined to spend up on social events, luxuries and fripperies, mainly designed to improve your sex life. Some of you will be seeking to improve your social standing, probably via a love connection. During last week, you will tune out the “noise” around you, and enjoy some time to yourself. Favorable Dates : 7, 12, 16 Favorable Colors : Yellow & Grey
This is a time for trying new things and beginning new ventures. Creativity finds a successful channel or outlet. Beautiful energy is with you for getting the courage to express yourself more freely, romantic attractions, exciting new hobbies or channels of entertainment, and creative freedom. A spirit of openness helps to bring new opportunities into your life. You might choose to pursue a hobby or creative activity with great passion. There can be a release from previously limiting, rigid, or stifling conditions. Health might also improve and you could become more mobile and active. Favorable Dates : 10, 13, 19 Favorable Colors : Red & Yellow
Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June )
Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September )
Overall, it is a fruitful period for you and the highest reward for correct actions will be your emergence as a more mature, productive individual with a definite idea of the directions your personal growth must take now, and in the future. Obligations to your domestic world can be at odds with a restless desire to strike out and do your own thing. Try to find a way to satisfy both needs, perhaps separately. You may be tempted to exaggerate your social status, professional position, intellectual accomplishments, or monetary assets. Favorable Dates : 8, 12, 17 Favorable Colors : White & Blue
You feel especially liberated during this period, and events happening around now can set the ball in motion. There may be eye-opening psychological discoveries that help you to liberate yourself from difficulties of the past or from attitudes that have been holding you back from fully enjoying your life. Relationships are steady and committed, and the focus would be on fairness and equality. It’s also a time to express emotions gracefully, diplomatically, and considerately. There could be a stronger focus on a relationship, partner, or potential partner. Favorable Dates : 8, 12, 17 Favorable Colors : Blue & Yellow
68
www.thebeatbali.com
Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )
Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January )
This is a time to re-evaluate matters, not to give something up. Your career income should increase, but due to the plethora of retro phases, issues from the past and connected with hidden or concealed concerns will make themselves felt. If there is an inconsistency or error in need of correction, you’ll probably discover it now. People, groups, or relationships that you have been idealizing could prove a little disappointing. Aim to keep your center and seek out activities that keep your mind busy. You can learn from the experience, if only to get even closer to your long-standing beliefs. Favorable Dates : 6, 14, 15 Favorable Colors : Blue & Red
This can be a strong time for inative money making or money managing ideas, and a partner or close friend can play an integral role in this. You have self-control and self-discipline to draw from and you can make real progress, even if it’s in small ways, towards your goals. There is a stronger desire to play it safe right now, but at the same time, you’re not afraid of a little change, as long as it’s within reasonable limits. Interactions are calm, and doing things for others is a way to demonstrate how much you care. Favorable Dates: 7, 11, 16 Favorable Colors : Yellow & Green
Scorpio ( 23 October – 21 November )
Aquarius ( 20 January – 18 February )
You’ll be reconsidering your role in life, your personal self-image and your ability to influence others. This is a period when it pays to make an effort - the charm of your personality, willingness to cooperate with others and sense of humour will make a big difference. Love and romance can be favorable. Decorating, beauty treatments, the arts, creative pursuits, parties, dates, and recreation are generally favoured now. You would value your personal relationships, in which you often take on a caretaker role. The people you meet would perhaps be a little quirky and certainly original, but possibly also quite inspiring. Favorable Dates : 6, 11, 15 Favorable Colors : Blue & Red
It is a good time to focus on tasks that you’ve put on a shelf or that require a solid, practical, and focused mindset. It’s a great time for reorganizing your personal space and for finishing jobs you’ve left uncompleted. It’s a good time to set emotions aside in order to tackle practical tasks. Take care of business now, and it will help take care of you later. This period will present a powerful mating phase, but those already mated may find trouble with supposedly secret affairs coming out into the limelight. Favorable Dates : 7, 13, 16 Favorable Colors : White & Green
Sagittarius ( 22 November -21 December ) You are in a practical frame of mind making it a good time for working on projects that truly matter, and for taking care of business. Restructuring and organizing efforts can pay off. Accepting the consequences of your own actions and taking charge of your own life will awaken the responsibility and maturity that places you on a higher level, where true success and fulfilment are now possible to attain. Dealings and transactions will work out smoothly and effortlessly for you, as you score one over your competitors. Favorable Dates : 10, 13, 18 Favorable Colors : White & Purple
Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March ) Social and learning opportunities are emerging, but it’s important that you don’t go too far, and this is especially so for adding new projects or responsibilities to your life. There can be pleasing contact with a love interest and your communications tend to be respected. People may turn to you for advice, particularly for tricky matters. They can count on you for being there for them with helpful words and without judgment. Look for actions speaking louder than words when you’re considering the people in your life. Favorable Dates : 7, 9, 16, 18, 25, 27 Favorable Colors : Yellow & Blue

IDLES
Joy As An Act Of Resistance As someone who had completely missed the phenomenon that is IDLES, this weekend’s Clifton Downs Festival provided the perfect opportunity to watch the Bristol post-punks finish up their scintillating live season to a rapturous home crowd. IDLES (always stylized in CAPS) certainly aren’t for the faint-hearted, but the sheer raw power and emotions-laid-bare performances have been raved about ever since they owned the Park Stage at Glasto earlier this year. Front man Joe Talbot is a fearsome presence, both on and off-stage, addressing the recent deaths of his mother and baby daughter with a frightening frankness whilst shouting himself hoarse over thrumming bass lines and car-crash guitars. The album follows on from last year’s debut “Brutalism” as a coping mechanism about
finding solace and fighting off the darkness. On that level – and as one of the most hectic shows I can remember - Joy As An Act Of Resistance is an absolute triumph. “June” – the month when Talbot lost his child – is a lament filled with excruciating images (“baby shoes for sale, never worn”), but otherwise Talbot leads the charge through an uproariously uplifting set that rails against Fascism and the current Tory Brexit shit-show. Crowd favourites “Danny Nedelko”, “Never Fight A Man With A Perm” and “Love Song” do more than enough to counter the darker moments – particularly with guitarist Mark Bowen doing laps in just his Calvins as Talbot smashes up the drum kit in the finale. What a show. What an album. Dan Ashcroft
