So what is the state of tourism on the island lately? If you check the figures, the numbers are just about the same as last year in regard to foreign tourist arrivals and way down when it comes to the domestic market. It is taking time to come back from the eruptions and earthquakes, but it would seem there is more at play than natural calamity. The central government continues to push their 10 new Balis agenda with some minor success, our neighbour Lombok being one standout. And another factor, the existence of so much more competition in the F&B and accommodation sectors around the island in the past two years. What was once confined to a small area of south Bali, tourism is now spreading all over the island, particularly the southern part, and if the number of arrivals are still the same or less, then what does that mean? We would imagine things getting tight. Having said all that, Bali continues on an entertainment high with a bunch of very big shows on the way. This includes Bag Raiders and Dennis Ferrer at Manarai this weekend, Sneaky Sounds at Mrs Sippy this and next Saturday (final show), M.A.N.D.Y. this weekend and Peking Duk next weekend at Omnia, Diplo at Finns Beach Club and Nakadia back in Bali at Red Ruby next week. We have noticed, thankfully, a few more people around town in the past couple of weeks and we hope for more of that in the near future. Check inside for the details of the big shows and online thebeatbali.com and our IG page @thebeat.bali for all the latest events and news.

Later in the month, Berlin’s notoriously dressedin-white DJ, Oskar Offermann, a regular at Berghain/Panorama Bar, Robert Johnson, Tresor and more will be showcasing his beats at Ruby on the 10th. Rickshaw Runnin:

www.thebeatbali.com

FEATURE

With one wheel short of four, a two-stroke 7 horsepower lawnmower motor, a seat that is hard as nails and a chassis largely held together by its paint job, an autorickshaw isn’t really the best vehicle to cross town, let alone an entire country like India. I’m always up for a challenge though, so with a good mate that’s precisely what I found myself doing over a couple of weeks this August. From Kochi in the deep south of Kerala to Jaisalmer – just a few clicks shy of the Pakistan border – our little custom painted threewheeler managed to haul us 2849km through floods, deserts, mountains and utterly chaotic cities with not even so much as a flat tyre to show for it. An absolute miracle considering other teams were averaging three breakdowns per hour – the Gods truly must have been smiling on us.

Put on by The Adventurists, the Rickshaw Run India is now in it’s tenth year, with over 80 teams leaving the start line and setting off, unsupported, across the madness that is the Indian subcontinent. Aiming to hit around 250km a day there’s a lot of ground to cover, but if you’ve always wanted to ‘see a bit of India’ then there really is no better way to do it than this. Just make sure to bring a cushion and some earplugs since, like Bali, a loud horn isn’t optional, it’s a necessity. If you love comfortable journeys in peace and quiet, I urge you not to read any further. For everyone else, have a look at their website and get involved. www.theadventurists.com [Dan Ashcroft] www.thebeatbali.com

DJ Story #12 Bali Resident DJ’s Shammui Singapore

Hi Shammui, when did you become a Bali resident DJ? Since 2012 Tell us your background in music. I was always into trance music before I actually started DJ’ing, the influence of Sasha, John Digweed etc. I got triggered to the sound of drums/percussions in tribal house. Then I moved to Bali and experienced massive music direction changes. The music culture here educated and expanded my knowledge. I actually found my real self in beautiful uplifting melody that tells a story and takes me on a journey to the beats of deep house & techno. Favourite styles to spin? I don’t have a specific style as I find myself versatile, while at the same time keeping the same sound and direction. To make it more interesting I always mix different genres in my sets, for example deep house, melodic techno, afro house, progressive … and reading the crowd taking them on a musical journey.

Current Bali residencies Red Ruby, 707 Beach, Rock Bar, Ibiza in Bali, Vault, Who’s Your Daddy, Attika, Finns. (complete the sentence) .. “I love to play in Bali because ....” Because of the multi-national culture, accepting and understanding all the different styles/genres of quality music that is introduced and shared by the DJs from all over the world. Best part though the DJs here have their own different styles or directions, most of us are supportive towards each other and respect what each other is achieving. In short the music culture here is amazing! Thankyou Shammui, see you around the island. THE BEAT FEATURE CANGGU

Words & Photos by Vero New Gastropub and a Bloody Mary bar full of chill vibes and wicked American comfort food. If we had the opportunity to eat every meal here, we would! So let’s kick it off with their killer Bloody Marys – even if you’re a seasoned Cocktail Connoisseur, you have probably not seen anything like it. It’s downright decadent and not for the faint hearted. The food menu at Compass kicks just as big of a punch with their filling offerings. In the true American fashion – they dish up giant juicy Burgers and bacon wrapped Corn Dogs. It only takes one look at the Cuban Sandwich and the staple Grilled Cheese to know it belongs in your stomach. This is your best bet for some serious hangover food in Canggu. Plus the bar is located upstairs overlooking the now mega busy Batu Bolong main drag, so you can sit back, sip on your cocktail of choice (we suggest you don’t leave Bali without trying their Espresso Martini) and watch the mayhem below. Compass Canggu is a fun place where you want to spend a few hours drinking and eating with your gang.

Soundrenaline 2019

A weekend of Indonesia’s flourishing music scene

50

www.thebeatbali.com

FEATURE

Soundrenaline made its return to Bali from the 7th–8th of September at Garuda Wisnu Kenana (GWK) cultural park, with this year’s theme being “The Spirit of All Time”. There seems to be a rapid evolution of Soundrenaline with each year passing and this being their 17th edition, they showcased 60 of Indonesia’s progressive and prominent musicians, varying in genres, through four stages - being the “A Stage”, “Celebration Stage”, “Creators Stage” and “All Time Stage”. Each year, we’re amazed by the growth of the stage production, quality of talent, as well as the abundance of enthusiasm from Indonesia’s youthful and charismatic audiences. This year was promisingly more vibrant, from the overall festival experience to the one off, cross collaborations between musicians and visual artists. This year’s international headliner was British 90’s alterative band “Suede”, setting off an electrifying, energy jammed set and later ended the Saturday night in a sweet nostalgic celebration with local band Reborn Padi. What an incredible weekend of Indonesia’s crème de la crop of music! [Thearosa] www.thebeatbali.com

FOOD Looking for a luxurious lunch date with great food, uber-attentative staff and amazing beachfront beats? Look no further than Manarai Beach House, right next to the Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua Beach Resort. Responsible for the revival, or even birth of the music scene in Nusa Dua, Manarai has hosted some of the biggest shows in the area featuring acts like ASAP Rocky, techno queen Charlotte De Witte and most recently staging the Sunny Side Up Festival with the likes of Flume and more! With all the hype behind them, Manarai Beach House, with their Ismaya Group credentials, are on top of the game, but wait till you try the exemplary food and drinks Executive Chef Stefan Poyet and Corporate Culinary Maverick Phillip Mimbimi have put together! The menu itself is 100% ingredient driven with local Balinese and Indonesian influences, covering a wide range of flavours and textures, with eclectic comfort food that is just outright delicious! You can find touches from French, Japanese and Italian cuisines but their traditional Balinese specialties are highly recommended. Not to mention the complementing whimsical cocktails, some of which refer back to the design of the beach house and others that just make you want to say yeehoo! Our favourite is the C-Cup (155k), a silky vodka-based cocktail served in a coconut that tastes like the tropical gods gifted us their sacred nectar.

dip in the pool, we opted for a mix of meat and fish for our main courses. Kicking off with a Pan-fried seabass (355k) and the succulent US Grain-Fed Skirt Steak (295k), that satisfied our cravings to the full! It was almost time to head back home, but every Date for 2 should end with something sweet, don’t you agree? We ended this incredible experience with the Wingko Babat (135k) a thick coconut cake served with chocolate ganache, fresh berries and coconut ice cream, as well as the classic Banana Split (145k). Don’t waste another moment, make sure you taste the flavours of Manarai Beach House straight away!

We began our wonderful date at one of the couches beside the pool, and as I have become somewhat of a regular at Manarai, I knew exactly which starters to order. You can’t go wrong with the Crispy Tuna Tempe (135k) with truffle aioli. You know when people ask you that silly question “if you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?”, well this is it for me. A stand-out dish well deserved of its current praise. This came along with some tender Wagyu Beef Satay (200k), a Dragon Roll (155k) and another beautifully presented Twisted Tiki (155k) cocktail. Balinese Ritual

Woobar Barman: Made Ville

If there’s one place that speaks endless vibrancy and swanky vibes, it’s the W Hotel and their well known Woobar! As we enthusiastically entered the hotel’s insta-famous bamboo arch drive and made the walk through beautiful tiered swimming pools and glossy palm trees, we were greeted by their ever so charming mixologist, Made Ville! Introducing, “The Balinese Ritual”, a homage to the island and inspired by its daily offerings. This bright and enticing cocktail is stirred with gin, sacco vermouth, holy essence and home tangerine liquer. Made Ville describes it as a light alternative to a negroni, replacing the usual Campari with their homemade W tangerine liqueur, infused with elder flowers and vodka. And to no fail, it was love at first sip. A harmonious balance of sweetness and bitterness from its tangerine zest. It’s an immersive “W twist” on a classic style cocktail, to be appreciated in every sip beside a Seminyak sunset, over the glistening waters of the Indian Ocean. All in all, our Woobar experience leaves us in no wonder as to how they managed bagged a spot on Marriot group’s top 52 bars and restaurants!

MANISH’S ZODIAC PREDICTIONS The Beat astrologer Manish Kumar Arora reads into the next two weeks. Aries ( 21 March – 19 April )

Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July )

This is a period in which your belief systems and personal philosophies are especially important to you, and you are more inclined to share them with those younger than you. It’s an excellent time for travel, higher education, communications and higher learning. Social activity increases, and you enjoy greater freedom of thought, inspiration, and fresh ideas and insights that seem to come out of the blue. Expanding your social circle is bound to expand your happiness and satisfaction from more broadranging experiences and perspectives. Favorable Dates :20, 24, 3 Favorable Colors : Blue & Green

You are more determined to achieve your personal goals and more strategic in the manner you go about doing so. Pouring your heart and soul into your efforts comes naturally now. You are drawn to people who are free-spirited at this point in your life. Friends or group associations may be catalysts for this new self-expression. Friendships that are stodgy or limiting may very well be left behind. You have a strong ability to see each person for who they are as unique individuals, and this helps endear you to others. Favorable Dates : 21, 28, 3 Favorable Colors : White & Grey

Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )

Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )

You are in the position to inspire others through what you create in this period. You are bound to reach a broader audience if you do, and the feedback will feed the flames of your own inspiration. Your ideals are higher than usual, teaching may be part of the picture, and your cultural and spiritual awareness increases. Others notice your more tolerant and broadminded nature. Confidence is the key–faith in the universe and in your ability to do the right thing instinctually will get you everywhere now. Favorable Dates : 21, 25, 3 Favorable Colors : Red & White

Your overall perspective on life has been expanding, and you are more willing to embrace unusual, mystical, or spiritual philosophies. The direction your life is taking on a more philosophical level is what is on your mind these days, and you’re looking for something profound and deep. Superficial associations and friendships no longer do it for you, as you seek more meaningful connections. Adjustments need to be made in your intimate relationships in order to get to a “place” where you feel more free to relax and be yourself. Favorable Dates : 23, 25, 2 Favorable Colors : Green & Yellow

Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June )

Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September )

You may expand your associations with others through new acquaintances or group activity and can derive much pleasure and satisfaction–even joy– through these connections. Business endeavors will go more smoothly for you if you recognize the value of the team at this time. On a personal level, you may feel restricted by, and sensitive to, pressures from an intimate partner. Issues of trust and control come into play, and they cause you to feel somewhat caged. This can affect your sexual expression as well. Favorable Dates : 20, 29, 2 Favorable Colors : Red & Blue

Your imagination is fertile, and you view your pastimes and the entertainment with open eyes. Your goals become more realistic, and you have a good sense of where you stand. Although personal relationships may have some restricting or tense moments, you learn more about how far you can go, and you come out stronger. If single, you might establish a serious romance or meet a more mature or older lover. Concerns about children, who may be entering a new stage of development that requires more attention, are likely, if applicable Favorable Dates : 23, 27, 30 Favorable Colors : White & Red

68

www.thebeatbali.com

Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )

Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January )

You have a greater desire to get away, expand your horizons, and broaden your life experiences. This influence often correlates with a time when you are more able to get away from the daily routine. Some of you may have to make some critical decisions due to situations in your life that force you to make choices between career and family goals. Some of you may be promoted or your career takes a new direction. This is a good period for attracting what you want and improving your relations with others. Favorable Dates : 20, 21, 2 Favorable Colors : White & Blue

There is a beautiful synergy at work that leverages the right mix of talents, experiences, abilities and skills. You may meet new acquaintances who help you to further your goals, or you could join a new group or association that gives you considerable pleasure and satisfaction. You may recognize talents that you never knew you had, and this can be a sudden, exciting discovery Confidence is the key–faith in the universe and in your ability to do the right thing instinctually will get you everywhere now. Favorable Dates : 22, 26, 28 Favorable Colors : Red & Yellow

Scorpio ( 23 October – 21 November )

Aquarius ( 20 January – 18 February )

It’s a good time to simply work hard and get your life organized for better times to come. Your career dreams may be just in reach and you are bound to be working hard, with new responsibilities and increased focus. Your powers of attraction are high and if you’re looking for love, this is an opportune time to get yourself out there. You have a strong ability to see each person for who they are as unique individuals and this helps endear you to others. Favorable Dates : 21, 23, 28 Favorable Colors : Brown & Blue

You feel more connected with your natural instincts during this period, which boosts your confidence in your own already uncanny intuition. You may make little changes to your personal appearance or to your mannerisms that reflect the changes going on inside. A desire to be more free-spirited is with you in this period. For some, romance may be somewhat lacking or a romantic relationship could be more practical than fun. For others, a romantic relationship stabilizes and becomes more serious. Favorable Dates : 21, 26, 3 Favorable Colors : Red & Blue

Sagittarius ( 22 November -21 December )

Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March )

You could find that you are pressured when it comes to how you go about achieving your goals on a business level, as well as on a personal level. You may feel confused, moody, and vulnerable. Your belief systems and personal philosophies are especially important to you, and you are more inclined to share them with those younger than you. You may find that somebody else, or an external source, is clamping down on your resources, and you are held accountable. Romance in general is more animated and spirited. Favorable Dates : 22, 23, 30 Favorable Colors : Red & Yellow

You have the tools to improve your income at this time, and the problems that crop up only serve to push you in the right direction, towards financial independence. Some of you may be promoted or your career takes a new direction. The challenge is to find a healthy balance–to improve home life, while at the same time tending to your career needs. Others see your charm and appeal and they value you for your sparkling personality. Inner strength and control is the name of the game, and this is an ideal time to develop these qualities. Favorable Dates : 21, 25, 1 Favorable Colors : Yellow & Blue

CD REVIEW

8/10

F*****g sublime

Lana Del Rey

Norman F*****g Rockwell! In case you were wondering, Norman Percevel Rockwell - 1894-1978 - was an American author, painter and illustrator whose works focused on images of the idyllic American dream. For an artist who has based her career on the celebration and subversion of those ideals, Lana Del Rey couldn’t have picked a better subject matter for this, her magical fifth album – the inserted expletive clearly intended as a giant ‘screw you’ to the unattainable. Anyone who’s been keeping an ear out since 2010’s self-titled debut will recognize the usual themes of money, power, beauty, glory, excess and loss – all wrapped up in her gorgeous songwriting and seductive vocals. The skeletal trap-pop trip-hop vibes of “Honeymoon” remain in part, but here on “NFR!” there’s more of an emphasis on piano-based ballads and quiet folk. “Oh, be my once in a lifetime/Lyin’ on your chest in my party dress/I’m a f****n’ mess”

she coos on the exquisite “Love Song” over soft chords that are barely there. “California” is an equally muted meditation on the disparity between the promised land of L.A. and it’s broken-dreams reality. Elsewhere the funky Sublime redo of “Doin’ Time” takes on a whole new perspective (“Dance to the rhythm/It gets harder”), while closing lament “Hope is a Dangerous Thing for a Woman Like Me to Have - But I Have It” cements Del Rey’s reputation as a Sylvia Plath for the millennial generation: “Don’t ask if I’m happy/ You know that I’m not/But at best, I can say I’m not sad,” she whispers wearily. Never mind “The Next Best American Record” (track 10) – this is the work of the next best American songwriter. No question.. Dan Ashcroft
