As we move into October, the events and big shows keep on coming with some venues really stepping up their autumn game. Red Ruby has jumped out of the blocks this month with a number of big shows that are going right through to the end of November. The Beat spoke to Elliott from Red Ruby inside about the changes that have recently happened at the venue and the next couple of months of top quality DJs on the way – kicks off this Saturday night with Serge. Mrs Sippy closed out their huge weekly Sneaky Sounds System summer series last weekend, which was one of the most well-frequented regular gigs in town over the season, and now they have a couple of big acts, Dom Dolla and Yolanda Be Cool to take over this and next weekend. Omnia has been presenting some of the greatest entertainment stars all year long and next week is no exception. Nelly is a Grammy Award winning rapper, with four number 1 Billboard hits. Not to be missed next Friday, October 11. Next Sunday, S.A.S.H. brings their Bali summer to an end, after having monthly shows at Vue Beach Club, which definitely helped that venue get back into the game, the Sydney-based event will be closing off with special guest, Christian Burkhardt behind the decks. On the following Wednesday our boys, Escape will be finishing their summer season too at La Brisa with a back to back session of all your favourite Escape DJs. Man, there is a lot on! Check inside for all the details and the entire lo-down on Bali events, both big and small, in the magazine and online through thebeatbali.com and social media, mainly Instagram, @thebeat.bali which are both updated daily. There is plenty more inside too including Bali food, art and feature stories. Also post your party pics on our website social page, Beatlife and win tickets to some of the next best events in town. Use #guestlist on your posts and we will be in touch.

& THE ROSE BALI Ana Foxy is one of the dancers lighting up the floor at The Rose Bali dance shows that have popped up in recent weeks around the island. We spoke to Ana to find out how she got her moves and the confidence on the floor while she leaves the crowd standing in awe. No kidding, Ana is more than hot, she’s the real dancing queen. So tell me about you and dancing. How did you get started? I learnt to dance from a very young age. When I was four years old my mum started taking me to the local dance studio and I started to dance from stage to stage. What do you mean stage to stage? I had many shows at events since I was young. After my mum took me to the dance studio some event organisers noticed I had some skills and they wanted me to join their events. So from four years old the stage was already part of my life. I was dancing from stage to stage.
46
www.thebeatbali.com
And what happened later? In 2006 I took a break from dancing and moved from Bandung to Bali to further my education, but by 2008 I began to build my career as a dancer again. I can perform belly dancing, fire dancing, contemporary dance, pole dance, sexy dance, wet dance and lately, burlesque dance. The same year I started modelling too. What does it mean to you being a dancer? I love to dance which comes from my love of music. I dance to express my feelings. I express joy, sadness, love and hope by singing and dancing.
FEATURE That’s cool. When did you discover all this about dancing? When I was a young girl. I was like a mix of an extrovert and melancholic person. I listened to a lot of music which was the start of finding my passion. Dancing. Extrovert and melancholic sounds like a contradiction. I do love being in the spot light. What’s the best thing about being a dancer? When I dance, I become a different person. Dance gives me a feeling of freedom and when I dance I am at peace with my heart and soul. What kind of music were you brought up on? When I was young there was always music playing at home and as I grew up the inspiration from my family developed and my passion for music naturally progressed and I started to express this in the form of dance. Music moves you, literally. What kind of music were your parents into? My parents liked to listen to folk songs, they had an eclectic taste. We were four siblings and they also had musical talents but expressed it though playing instruments. Between them they played piano, guitar and flute. And I sang and danced. Where do you dance nowadays? I am dancing at The Rose Bali events and lately that has been at Opera. Sometimes I’m dancing in hotels in Nusa Dua and also I have work every week as a bottle girl in Omnia Bali. So what do you do when not dancing or delivering the bottles at Omnia? When I’m not dancing or at Omnia I’m usually doing a photo shoot. I prefer to stay at home if not working. Rest or making and fixing my costumes for next show. And staying out of trouble! So you make your own costumes too? That’s cool. Yes. Sometimes for my solo show I make my own costumes.
Are there any dancers who have had an influence on you and your dancing? For pole dancing yes. I have been greatly influenced by Felix Cane who was the winner of pole dance Australia 2006. When I started pole dancing in 2009, she moved so beautifully. And after I studied her, I made my own style and mixed it with other pole dancers’ styles. How about locally? Has anyone influenced you here? I adore two of my teachers. In 2008 - 2009 I was working for Step Up agency. We called her Bunda Wiwit. She was amazing. And another teacher called Naomi from Australia. I worked with her in Som Chai and she taught us how to do burlesque dancing. The way she moves is so beautiful and elegant. What do you like best, the pole dancing, the sexy dancing, the modelling, the burlesque, or the strutting with the girls at Omnia? Modelling is in first place and second is pole dancing. And what kind of music do you like? I like almost all kinds of music. Depending upon

It was an early start at 7am, with more than 30 girls from Bali coming together with local Indonesian actors and celebrities, Nadine Chandrawinata & Westny DJ and the conservation group #MangroveMobBali to clean the mangroves at the Wisata Hutan Mangrove (the mangrove tourist walk). They also planted new coral and participated in a fun day of surfing at the Rip Curl School of Surf in Sanur. Public relations at Rip Curl, Gamelia Carbery told The Beat, “We’ve collected 276 kgs of rubbish and only eight kilograms were recyclable. This rubbish destroys our mangroves. We worked together with Plastic Bank, Ocean Gardener, Sea Trees and Sea Soldiers to spread the news to the girls in Bali about plastic pollution and how this rubbish and plastic destroys our mangroves and corals. “We all realize that plastic pollution is a real problem here in Bali and we invited Nadine

Chandrawinata and Westny DJ to give extra voice to this event and encourage the girls to follow their lead in the fight against plastic trash. We want to help solve this problem and collaborate with people who truly care about the environment.” Rip Curl Planet is about giving back. It’s about taking the joy we get from the ocean as surfers, and turning it into momentum to help keep our ocean healthy and clean for years to come. According to the experts, mangroves, seagrass beds, and coral reefs are often found together and work in unison. The trees trap sediment and pollutants that would otherwise flow out to sea. Seagrass beds provide a further barrier to silt and mud that could smother the reefs. In return, the reefs protect the seagrass beds and mangroves from strong ocean waves. Without mangroves, this incredibly productive ecosystem would collapse.
FEATURE “It’s an amazing day planned for all the ladies attending this Girls Go Surfing day. I’m super stoked that we are able to support so many worthy environmental projects and by using this Girls Go Surfing day event to educate, bring awareness to the participants and others through social and other media to what it really means to be a surfer; respecting the oceans,” said Jonathan Morisson Deaker from Rip Curl School of Surf. “Well done Rip Curl and all the team involved,” he added. President Director of Rip Curl Indonesia, James Hendy also said, “As surfers we are all
responsible to be the caretakers of the ocean. The Girls Go Surfing Day provides the perfect opportunity to not only get more girls surfing and enjoying the ocean, but it’s also a great platform to educate and influence others about the pollution threats and protection of our most important marine ecosystem, the mangroves and coral reefs.” Rip Curl has a strong determination to be environmentally responsible and encourage our crew to participate in achieving this and we salute that. an autumn to remember.
Red Ruby has been coming into its own lately with a vibing terrace and pulsating main room inside. We spoke to manager Elliott about the changes that have been happening and the list of DJ power on the way over the next two months. So what has been happening at Red Ruby lately? I noticed a lot of work on the decor. Elliot: We are trying to deliver new decor elements in a continuous way. We are actually working on the next changes and we are developing the artwork ourselves, taking inspiration from contemporary artists or working with local artists like Swoofone or Ican Harem. The terrace has been getting busier and busier too? Yes, we worked on the decor of the terrace and we tried to make it a meeting point for acid jazz and jazz lovers. We are very proud to now have jazz trios every Monday and Tuesday and acid jazz every Thursday and Saturday with our talented friend Latex who performs with sequencers, drum machines and live saxophone.

DJ Story #13 Bali Resident DJs Jaux Ion Bali Hi Jaux, when did you become a Bali resident DJ? In 1990 at CDBS Radio Action. After one year there I became resident DJ in Double Six, Gado Gado, Scandal, Rasa Sayang, Janger.. and then Deejay Club which was my longest experience for more than 10 years. Tell us your background in music My first music genre was hip hop & funk, with inspiration from African bambaataa. But once I started playing in clubs I got close to house music and developed an interest in the underground scene. When I became a resident at Deejay Club I started to play progressive/ psytrance. I continued to play underground music in other Bali clubs like Pyramid, Mint, Mirror, Klapa and more recently Red Ruby and Opera. I have also been invited to play in Jakarta, Jogyakarta and Surabaya. In 1992 I participated in Indonesian DMC Style DJ contest coming in at #3 DJ in Indonesia. Beside playing as resident DJ in clubs, I played at rave parties in Sanur, Dream Island and Gili Trawangan. In 2016 I started playing as Shahada - a producing Psytrance
duo – and in 2017 we attended the famous Earthcore Festival in Melbourne where we had the luck to play together with the main DJs in the Psytrance scene - Vini Vici & Berg. Favourite styles to spin? I love all the kinds of music that make me and the people dance, but house music is my favourite.. I have to mention particularly psytrance because in my musical journey it has been very present. Current Bali residencies Opera Club (complete the sentence) .. “I love to play in Bali because ....” because I am a local hero in Bali (Lol) :-) Thank you Jaux, see you around the island. FEATURE Kalimantan – Indonesia’s best kept secret
Kalimantan indonesia’s best kept secret Words & Photos by Vero
Indonesia’s expansive part of Borneo is definitely hard to get to, but oh boy, is the effort worth it! Live aboard a houseboat, navigate the river canals crisscrossing the dense jungle of the Tanjung Putting National Park, meet our third closest relatives and so many other critters, sleep under the starts - this whole trip is like living in the National Geographic documentary. We set out to Kalimantan to explore the Tanjung Putting National Park, famous for its Orangutan conservation. Getting there was quite an adventure in itself. We first found ourselves in Pontianak – gritty, sprawling capital city straddling the equator, known for its rather bizarre equator monument. We crossed the massive delta of the Kapuas river to check it out during our layover, but we do not think you have to. The next day we hopped on a tiny aircraft – it literally only seats 10 passengers, and left for Pangkalan Bun, the gateway to the National Park. What really drew us to this park was the fact, the only way to explore it is on a multi-story,
52
www.thebeatbali.com
ramshackle liveaboard boat called Klotok. You rent the whole ship through one of the many operators in town, including a whole crew plus your own cook and set sail. They offer multiple packages and we recommend you definitely opt for a minimum of four days. Spoiler alert: the park is so packed with natural wonders and is teeming with wildlife, you’ll soon wish your tour wouldn’t have to end after just a couple days. Sailing and living on a boat is just as fun as it sounds. Look, do not expect five star luxuries, it’s not a Caribbean cruise and the amenities are pretty basic. It does however have a certain “rustic” charm to it - you wash yourself in an outdoor shower with the water pumped straight out from the river and sleep on the upper deck on a mattress covered with a thick mosquito net. This might sound rugged, but boat-camping under the stars and falling asleep listening to the crickets and other sounds of the jungle is a profound experience you’re not likely to forget. The first inhabitants we spotted instantly were
FEATURE acrobatic Proboscis monkeys with their funny, unusually long noses and interesting reddishbrown coats. There is also a plethora of colorful birds big and small, and we encountered many Toucans along the way. The major attraction here are however the big guys! Seeing the apes in the wild in their natural habitat feels nothing short of mind blowing. As you cruise on the canals of the National Park, you make stops along the way and hike into the jungle to the feeding platforms. The best time for Orangutan watching is dry season, when they are more likely to come out for a supplemental source of food. We lucked out big time and at each stop throughout the park, the primates would always come hang out. The guides would place the food consisting primarily of bananas on the wooden platform and would start calling on the apes. I will never forget the moment the branches high up in the forest canopy started rustling and bending down under their weight – a big family with multiple Orangutan babies was coming. The first thing that struck me was how similar to human babies they are. We
after all share 97% of the DNA with the world’s largest, tree climbing mammals. The most intriguing stop on the tour was the legendary conservation Camp Lakey where anthropologist Birute Galdika lived for over thirty years doing groundbreaking research on the “gardeners of the forests” as the primates are dubbed for their vital part in the rainforest ecosystems. Prior to her explorations, little was known to scientists about this fascinating species. We spent the whole day there wandering around, meeting rehabilitated Orangutans and geeking out about them with the rangers. We even met the king of the jungle, the alpha male of the pack of absolutely epic proportions – he looked like a furry Mini Cooper. No wonder this story book adventure has a world-class appeal. Despite the increase in popularity in recent years, the trip is still a magnificent introduction into the rainforest ecosystem and one of the most memorable experiences you’ll have in Kalimantan. www.thebeatbali.com

Eden Café has always been one of our go-tos; unpretentious, cozy, family owned establishment dishing up well thought out recipes. Eden’s meals are both flavor packed, nourishing and will make your taste buds dance with every single bite. Plus, on top of all that, at affordable prices that won’t break the bank! The café recently reopened after months of renovations and wow, what a facelift it got! The digital nomad crowd can knock themselves out at Eden’s enclosed air-conned space, dominated by a big Mandala wall centerpiece. The interior sports wooden elements and white walls, creating a very sleek, yet snug place. You can also park yourself on the outdoor patio filled with hanging plants and tropical greenery for some people watching. All the offerings at Eden taste glorious. We are big fans of their breakfasts and the Eggs Benny would definitely make our island top ten. Other hot tips would be the extensive menu of everyone’s favorite Smoothie Bowls, you can even customize it by choosing three free toppings from a wide range of options. If you prefer to drink, rather than eat your smoothies – all of Eden’s are thick and creamy and taste just as killer. We also have to give a shout out to their updated lunch menu, featuring some specials you won’t find anywhere else: Stuffed Chicken & Teriyaki Salmon are their lunch bestsellers for a good reason. If you’re looking for feel-good, wallet friendly food and a relaxed atmosphere, then you’ll be like us, and about to become a regular!

In this edition of Chef’s Recommends, we wandered down Seminyak’s bustling eat street and came across the iconic “Ultimo” Italian Restaurant, an establishment that has been a tourist favourite for almost 15 years now! After being warmly greeted by staff, they escorted us to Ultimo’s enchanting al fresco dining area, where candlelit and white cloth tables awaited us along with a dinner rush crowd. Served by Chef Sanjaya, was their “Groppa Wagyu Alla Griglia MB – 7 Servita Salsa Al Vino Rosso” for IDR 230,000, a glorious 200 gram grilled Wagyu Rump served with a crusty potato fondant, sautéed vegetables and red wine sauce. It was a fine selection of flavours, accompanied by a glass of red with the highlight of the dish being the Wagyu’s juicy richness and succulence, showcasing it’s true MB – 7 grade with its melt – in – your – mouth texture. All in all, it was an evening well spent as Ultimo still strongly stands as a tourist and local favourite, with its ever so lively atmosphere and quality dining.

Foals
Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost: Part 2
“One of the things we feel we’ve struggled with before is that our creative desire and ambition has not been able to be conveyed on a 40-minute, 10-track album,” complained Foals frontman Yannis Phillippakis earlier this year. Most other bands seem to manage it, but nevertheless, here comes the Oxford quartet’s solution to this conundrum: part two of their double whammy “Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost”. The first (admittedly impressive) part came out back in March, and found the boys in experimental mode, with excursions into everything from indie disco-friendly house to 80’s inspired Talking Heads funk. Half a year later and here’s their no less assured follow up. If part 1 was an expansion then this is a logical contraction back into the big, riffriddled stadium style rock of 2015’s “What Went Down”.
It’s an approach best showcased on “Black Bull”, which finds a raw-throated Phillippakis howling, whooping and letting loose his Neanderthal side. The thumping “Like Lightning” is even less bothered with subtlety and goes full bore arena rock - no bad thing at all tbh. But this is Foals we’re talking about, and so brain will always win out over brawn. Once the hullabaloo of their full tilt material dies down, what remains are moments of beauty and fragility like on “10,000 Feet”, where we are invited to imagine “drifting upwards through red skies to the infra-red” over sampled sounds of wildlife. Speaking of the natural world, the album ends with the sprawling “Neptune” - a billowing hymn to the inevitable triumph of nature whose length belies it’s grace. Lovely stuff - maybe they really do need more than one album to fit everything in. Dan Ashcroft

But not only does it heat the water to within a degree of your desired temperature, this ingenious carafe filters the water too, making it healthier and tastier. Nada Bumi by Digital Nativ Engineers from Digital Nativ in Jakarta have recently collaborated with Invisible Flock and developed a device called the Nada Bumi - roughly translating to Earth Tones. The device reads electrical signals in plants and organic matter, turning these impulses into musical notes. Plants sense and respond to external stimuli, meaning they react to different external factors like sun, rain and flame – causing physiological responses which then creates enchanting melodies depending on what is going on around them. It’s totally awesome, check out @digitalnativ Instagram to see/hear it for yourself! www.beatmag.com
