La Favela Collection Available in La Favela right now!

La Favela has been one of the most popular dining and nightlife venues in Seminyak for years and it is only natural that with all that style and retro cool they display throughout their establishment they should now come out with a stunning fashion collection. A fashion collection that not only oozes grace and style, but also helps local artisans find their own way forward too. “We are proud to announce that the collection is ready to be in the hands of La Familia. After standing for almost seven years, we believe releasing a well-designed collection of t-shirts, accessories and bags is the kind of move to elevate our patrons’ experience,” the La Favela design team told The Beat recently. “La Favela is more than just a venue, but also a character out of a story, it is immersed into a different experience for different people. Fluid yet committed, it is breath-taking, yet relatable.” And that, we can imagine is exactly what the collection is all about.

44

www.thebeatbali.com

With the idea of turning corners of the La Favela style into bags and accessories, the journey of creating all the items began. The La Favela team decided to only work with local vendors to sustain an ethical production. “Searching all over the island for experts, each item was gifted with a touch of professionalism. Working closely with all the local artisans everybody understood that Bali is overflowing with potential, and consequently, it was decided that the team would share all their techniques that are not commonly used in Indonesia with the suppliers,” the La Favela design team also told The Beat. The result from the exchange of opportunities & knowledge with the local talents and their dedication to the project, made this collection even bigger and better than what was first perceived. With this, the La Favela collection has arrived. The collection is now available in a boutique space at La Favela open from 5pm to 11pm every night.

Chasing the Bali Waterfalls Sekumpul

This waterfall has long been a hidden gem of Bali and is touted as THE most devastatingly beautiful one on the island. Its remote location in the northeastern corner of Bali contributed to the fact the waterfall remained largely unknown until only a few years ago. Also, it was an adventure in itself to even find the place due to the minimal signage and poor infrastructure, but all that was part of its charm. You would have the emerald green valley with seven different waterfalls basically just to yourself. As a huge fan of J.R.R. Tolkien growing up, my first thought upon seeing the valley was that this is where elves would live if they existed. With the rise of Instagram unfortunately, this place blew up in the recent years and saw a lot of debatable development, steep hike in the entrance fees and just way too many visitors to a place that’s relatively small. A quick trip down the memory lane: we first

46

www.thebeatbali.com

discovered the waterfall through google Earth in 2012 and we were the only people there. Surreal experience. Descending down into the valley and watching the biggest waterfall with three different discharges cascading down into the lush jungle valley was mesmerizing. When we returned in 2014, we noticed that first food & souvenir stalls started popping up at the entrance to the path down to the valley, but the experience was still very pleasant. The locals were friendly, we met maybe three other intrepid explorers there and the entrance fee was still well within the usual asking price at the “obyek wisata”, which means “the place of interest” in Indonesian, ie.: 20k Rp (less than $2 AUS). When we went back in 2018 however, and it was a very different story. The place was completely zooed out. And the two villages that split the “rule” over the valley decided to cash in on its fame big time.

FEATURE

There is a gated entrance now, where you have to stop, way before you even reach the actual village from which you start the trek down to the valley. You’re informed it is no longer possible to venture in the valley solo and you need to hire a guide. Many of them are knowledgeable, speak good English and you can learn about the local way of life and it’s great to support the local community, but the waterfalls are so easy to find, there is really no need to demand you cannot explore on your own. The most significant change is you’re now also expected to purchase a tour package. It includes activities you could easily do yourself (like rice field trek) or especially the ones you really do not have to do at all (taking unoriginal pictures for Instagram). Again, it is easy to blame the social media giant for contributing to the demise of this spectacular place – as a result of the demand for these pics, there are now giant nests and swings built all over the place, where

you can wait in line to get the exact same Insta shot like thousands of people before you. The minimal amount asked was 250k Rp ($25 AUS) which included the compulsory guide and the most expensive package was 1 Mil Rp ($100 AUS) if you wanted to add on all the Instagram nonsense stops to Instragram nests of various sizes. We were taken aback by not being able to explore on our own, but definitely lucked out with our guides. We had a seasoned, friendly and fun local guide with his young apprentice, who both went out of their way to show us some hidden nooks and crannies of the valley and even took us to a clean natural pool we could jump into, despite it not being part of our basic package. It would be great to see a portion of the now relatively steep entrance fees coming back into improving the infrastructure and most importantly preserving the natural character of the valley instead of building more Instagram photo op contraptions. The most irritating experience remains the amount of Insta tourists who are now swarming the place. It felt like being in Disneyland and even the more remote waterfalls in the valley had lines of Instagrammers changing their outfits frantically before getting wet from the spray, in order to get the shot. If you’re into that, then you will have the best time here among a lot of likeminded people, if just reading about it makes you see red, then there is luckily still a plethora of waterfalls in Bali that are relatively unknown and off the Insta trail. For this edition of Chef’s recommendation, we explored the endless alleyways of Kuta and came across Brazillian Aussie BBQ’s sister restaurant; “Bali Black Stump”. This meat lover’s paradise offers top quality, proper imported Australian steaks! With a great selection on their menu, head chef Mandala Christian, who spent 16 years in the Sydney culinary scene recommended their 450 gram T – Bone Steak (320k). The cut was a Killara Black Angus, served medium well with options of a side salad with potatoes. We accompanied our dish with some killer mash potatoes, a fresh garden salad and garlic butter. The meat was perfectly tender, marinated and simply seasoned, with juice in every bite and plenty of hot-off the grill flavours. Man, so good I’m going back for more!

MANISH’S ZODIAC PREDICTIONS The Beat astrologer Manish Kumar Arora reads into the next two weeks. Aries ( 21 March – 19 April )

Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July )

You radiate charisma and seduction all period, with weekends being a particularly auspicious time to woo potential suitors into your web. Work can be both productive and enjoyable. Moreover, this is an amazing time to think outside the box and envision your greater goals in life. Use a delicate touch and soft words. Favours may be done for you that can lead to impressive improvements; some are even unsolicited and may come as the result of power changes overhead. At the work place, you are in danger of taking out your frustrations on someone who doesn’t deserve the punishment. Favorable Dates : 4, 6, 10 Favorable Color : Green & Red

Agreements and partnerships are more personal and obvious this period. You would be learning the lessons regarding relationships, how you relate to others, what you want from others, what you need in a relationship, and what a healthy relationship means to you. Happiness and a desire to share your good fortune and joy with others is the theme now. You are feeling generous and expansive, and are inclined to give lavish gifts or buy something lovely for yourself that is costly or extravagant. A diet or budget is likely to go out the window right now. Favorable Dates : 30, 3, 8 Favorable Colors : Green & Yellow

Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )

Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )

A busy and productive period is likely once you are past the distractions or complication, especially with power people and coworkers. Finish whatever you start and keep goals and commitments reasonable as you are prone to promise away too much and take on too much. Over stress is to be avoided. Romance may be a bit of a sticky wicket. Take discussions calmly and do a lot of listening before talking. Things will not be as simple as they seem at first sight and may require reconsideration or subsequent adjustment. Favorable Dates : 30, 5, 12 Favorable Color : Blue & Grey

A busy and productive period is likely with unexpected good fortune of some kind. It could be good for resuming an older project though, and it is definitely appropriate for analysing the weak points of your career and remedying them, for reorganizing yourself or reconsidering objectives. Romance does very well and may bring all of it to your door step. You feel especially attractive or friendly, and the warmth you radiate is noticed and appreciated. Networking with friends may yield the best results with coworkers coming in next. Favorable Dates : 1, 5, 10 Favorable Colors : Blue & Red

Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June )

Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September )

It is not usually a good period for starting something new. You are recommended to choose consolidation, remedial work and reorganization. You feel like relaxing and enjoying the beautiful side of life rather than laboring or concentrating on difficult tasks. A significant development in a close relationship or strong feelings of attraction to someone you encounter, are very likely at this time. Personal goals being supported nicely by members are also likely, especially fitness, career and any improvement effort. You are more sensitive, impressionable, dreamy or idealistic at this time Favorable Dates : 1, 4, 10 Favorable Colors : Blue & White

You’ll receive compliments for your past efforts. You’ll have opportunities with sentimental potential. You can easily be caught in a trap, because the tendency towards pleasures will be big and because you have a major difficulty in saying no to temptations. If you’re in a solid relationship, it will be a wonderful period for harmony, communion and fun together. Extra work in profession may be handed or dished out to you but may hold several opportunities within it, especially for those of you in the food, transportation, service, banking, investing and travel industries. Favorable Dates : 1, 9, 12 Favorable Colors : Yellow & White

68

www.thebeatbali.com

Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )

Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January )

This is an excellent time to take the initiative or to begin a project that you have been considering. Action is the theme for period but avoid doing anything impulsively. Emotional stability appears calm. New friends are likely this period, especially through networking, day time encounters, lunches and ‘friend-of-a-friend’ connections. Next level upgrades are indicated in committed relationships, with talks that bring you closer. Your aesthetic sense is strong now; you may want to make changes in your environment to take it more harmonious and pleasurable for you. Favorable Date: 2, 6.12 Favorable Color : Blue & Red

This period you will want to focus on any issues that are concerned with technical matters such as contracts and even deals made on a handshake. You will want to be sure of your responsibilities and what you are expected to do in order for you to have the best outcome in these matters. It is a good idea for you to not be totally trusting in matters where your judgment could be clouded by emotions. You need to balance emotions with common sense at this time or you could be taken advantage of, especially in a relationship. Favorable Dates : 2, 4, 11 Favorable Colors : Green & Grey

Scorpio ( 23 October – 21 November )

Aquarius ( 20 January – 18 February )

This is a dynamic and exciting period. Your vitality and courage are strong now and you are eager to meet challenges. You can accomplish a great deal of work, especially if it involves physical effort. Hard work, persevering effort, and an unusual degree of self-discipline are highlighted now. You can now muster the stamina and strength for the arduous labour that is required. Take advantage of any unusual offers or opportunities. This is a good time to brainstorm with others, share ideas, and come to a group consensus. Favorable Dates : 30, 4, 6 Favorable Colors : Yellow & White

You‘re all about not rocking the boat with anyone this period. Earlier in the period you would be in solitary work mode and you like it that way. You‘re sorting out the details, and getting excited about the potential for success, the way your life can change based on this new adventure. You‘re trying your best to regain your strength but it‘s not easy when you also have to survive in life. Relax, things are going to be okay and you will have the rewards you are working for at this time. Favorable Dates : 3, 11, 12 Favorable Colors : Blue & Red

Sagittarius ( 22 November -21 December )

Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March )

You have support from the personal front, so your confidence is boosted and you feel empowered to keep climbing the mountain in life. By the end of the period and into the end you‘re learning the value of leaving your work baggage at work and leaving your home baggage at home, fluently moving from work mode to personal mode. You will be the centre of attention and you will have many people looking to you for advice and guidance as well. You will find great satisfaction in your current relationship and you will feel like celebrating it. Favorable Dates : 2, 8, 12 Favorable Colors : White & Purple

You will have great satisfaction in knowing that you’ve been on the right track when it comes to career and relationships. CD REVIEW

10/10

funk soul brother

KIWANUKA

Michael Kiwanuka Once a decade, along comes a record that is so timeless, so immersive, so utterly compelling that it takes your breath away. This, the third LP from Michael Kiwanuka is one of those records. His first two – 2012 debut “Home Again” and its 2016 follow-up “Love & Hate” – aimed at greatness, but here on “KIWANUKA” he simply knocks it out of the park. Born and raised in London’s Muswell Hill to Ugandan parents, Kiwanuka grew up a skateboarding kid on a diet of 90s indie rock, before discovering the great soul masters of Otis Reading, Marvin Gaye and Bill Withers among others. It clearly left an impression, with “Living In Denial”, lead single “Hero” and opener “You Ain’t The Problem” sounding like they’ve been beamed in directly from superfly 1960’s Harlem. Thanks to savant producer

Danger Mouse none of it sounds like treading old ground though – it’s more of a contemporary revival than a straight up period homage. Even on its more downbeat moments there’s still an air of elation: “Piano Joint” takes the vibe of a late night smoky dive bar before morphing into a beautiful Bacharachian ballad, while the dazzling “I’ve Been Dazed” grows into a swelling, gospel choir-soaked hymn. And oh my that voice. It’s the voice that elevates everything onto a higher plane. Effortless and soulful in equal measures – like liquid morning sunshine being poured into your ears. Absolute soul-healing magnificence from start to finish. Dan Ashcroft
