Trash dumpers beware The Badung government has decided to take action against people throwing trash onto the side of the roads, sewers and rivers. Hotspots will be monitored and people sanctioned with a maximum fine of Rp. 25 million or three-months jail. “This is not just bluffing’’ said PP Badung Chief of Police, IGAK Suryanegara to Bali Express. His party, being the enforcer of the Regional Regulation, have partnered with the local Environmental and Hygiene Service (DLHK). They have already imposed sanctions on several offenders in Jimbaran and Kuta by imposing fines of Rp. 1 million in accordance with the provisions of the regulation. “It seems that public awareness is still lacking and the river is still the top spot to dump waste” explained Head of Water Rescources (SDA), Anak Agung Dalem. Hopefully these fines will deter any further littering to the Bandung area. News from Seminyak Times.

FEATURE
Hernan Cattaneo The Beat checked in with Argentina’s progressive house master, Hernan Cattaneo before his gig at Jenja Bali, which is on Saturday, February 2. Throughout his 30 years of making music and playing his sounds, Hernan has reached just about every corner of the globe, leading listeners through journeys with grooves and melodies unique to his style. Whether he is performing at festivals like Coachella, for the vast crowds of Tomorrowland or creating new experiences like his show in Buenos Aires featuring a live orchestra, Hernan is constantly pushing the boundaries of the melodic house & techno genre and is an inspiration to watch live. Hi Hernan, where in the world are you now and what’s going on there? Hey Beat. On holidays with my family recharging my energy after an incredible 2018. If you stop to think about last year, what were some of your most cherished moments of 2018?
46
www.thebeatbali.com
We did a symphonic concert in Argentina´s Opera House called Connected where 63 musicians (and one DJ :) ) were onstage performing live electronic classics and was the highlight of my year and probably also of my whole career. Right after this I was named in Argentina as an outstanding contributor of the culture in Buenos Aires and later the Best Progressive House DJ at the Ibiza DJ Awards. So after so many years in the industry it was really rewarding to feel so relevant to the scene. Sounds like an awesome year. Your record label Sudbeat has seen releases from many top international producers. Can you give us any insight into who to look out for on the label in 2019? We started this year with some great stuff from Muui and Tiefstone and soon to come some tracks from Emi Galvan, Juan Deminicis and the annual WMC Showcrates compilation. How do you find the balance with all your gigs all over the world? How many gigs do you normally do a year?
FEATURE I used to do up to 130 a year. Since my daughters were born I’ve been slowing down the schedule to be able to spend more time with them and now I have a really good balance of family and professional life. The good thing about being so long on the scene is that you are already known and you don’t feel the rush or need to do all the gigs possible in order to get visibility because you already did that. You’ve been to Bali a few times right? How many times is that? Have you had a chance to experience the music scene here? This will be my 4th time and every single trip it was OFF THE HOOK. Jenja is a great club with a top crowd, really well mixed with locals and tourist and the atmosphere in my opinion is by far the best in the region.
The Beat Pit Stop Progressive house or techno? HOUSE Producing or DJing? DJ Married or single? MARRIED Beer or wine? NONE Facebook or Instagram? INSTA
What’s the best piece of advice you have been given? Life is too short, enjoy the most of it and do not waste your time. How do you feel about harder techno or slower house? Do you feel like you have found the perfect balance for your sound in among all the sub-genres there are today? I have always been into the melodies and grooves I liked regardless of the name or the style and always tried hard to avoid the trends. Having your own special music identity is the most precious thing for a DJ/producer.
How would you say your sound has changed or developed over the years? The style is the same, groovy and melodic, the sounds that build the tracks may have changed with technology, though. You have been doing live shows with symphony orchestras recently. What do you think the relationship is between classical and electronic music and what do you think of classical music yourself? Yes, we did a symphonic concert of electronic music and it went extremely well. One of the main reasons we did Connected was to show the non-club music crowd that our music is very rich in melodies and textures and played with a orchestra was the perfect way too do it. I love classical music, even when I don’t hear it a lot. What is your ideal party location and vibe? Is it day or night? Outdoor or indoor? Are there lots of decorations or does that not matter to you? Are there hundreds of thousands of people or would you rather do intimate gigs? Tuff question. I like most of the those options because you can play different music, but i could tell you about two of my favorites shows every year. One is Woodstock69 in Bloemendaal, where I play on the beach in the afternoon. Another is Stereo Montreal, a dark old school club where I play from 2am till whenever I want. (usually never less that 10 hrs) and there is no VIP, no decor, and very minimal lighting. What are you looking forward to most in 2019? 2018 was so so good that having half of that again would be really remarkable. I love what I do, so having the chance to keep traveling the world and sharing the music I like is an enormous privilege And what can we expect this time around at Jenja? Well, similar as the past few years I’m coming after a two week holiday so I’m supercharged and excited and really ready to play a lot of new great tracks. As I’ve said, Jenja is one of my fave clubs and I’m always looking forward to this first weekend in Feb when I play in Bali and Jakarta :) www.thebeatbali.com

hen it comes to parties, you are bound to find something going on any night of the week. Disguised as a pizza place (the pizza is incredible btw), Luigi’s Hot Pizza kicks off the start of the week with the PNNY crew every Monday night from 8 – 12pm playing eclectic house beats to jackin’ techno. If you are up for a late-night boogie, head down to the bottom end of the Batu Bolong on any night of the week, where Old Mans is situated and you are sure to find a vibrant party scene. Old Man’s is also busy from sunset. Wednesdays are one of the biggest nights of the week. With mounds of people all over the

streets. Covering venues like Pablo’s for their #Rumbleinthejungle hip hop night from 8 – 12pm. Old Man’s Dirty Ol’ Wednesdays where the Beer Pong Championship takes place. Enrol yourself before dark and battle it out with dozens of other players for great prizes and lots of fun. If you are into techno then visit Vzletnaya next door. And end up at Sandbar where commercial music goes on until about 4 – 5am. By the time your hangover from Wednesday is over, it’ll be Thursday night and the gnarliest spot on a Thursday is Pretty Poision. Think backyard skatebowl meets European dungeon

nightclub. Tattoos, skate bowl action and live DJs playing everything from rock & roll, hip hop to techno. Walk over to Black Cat Mini Market next door and check out their fridge in the corner for a cheeky surprise. If you’re looking for the most packed party on a Friday night, The Lawn is the place. Friday nights go till 1am with half price on selected drinks and a range of disco, house, RnB and hip-hop tunes. Previously mentioned Pablo’s have their house music nights, while Old Man’s continues to pack in the crowds throughout the entirety of the night with their live music night. Live rocking bands can also be found most nights at Made Jay’s Gimme Shelter. Hard techno can be heard at Vzletnaya until 4am. And as per usual, Sandbar picks up the latenight party people to end another wild night in Canggu.
Saturdays can be a bit of a hit and miss sometimes. But not to worry, Pretty Poison opens up and caters for all your party needs till 12pm. Afterwards, your best bet is the Batu Bolong parties mentioned previously or head towards Seminyak and Kuta. Sunday’s are actually a lot of fun. Deus are the pioneers of Sunday nights in Canggu. They boast beer on tap, a large crowd of expats, tourists and locals with live music action. Deus also hosts Tuesday nights with free tattoos and tacos. Head down towards Old Man’s for groovy house music and top 40 hits down by the beach at Sandbar. That wraps up our tour through Canggu, remember to stay safe and don’t drive if you’re drunk. Have fun out there!

SALAD BAR HOT SPOT - canggu
Y
ou would think there is almost more cafes than people in Canggu, but this stylish, yet completely unpretentious joint is exactly what was missing in our hood! Their no fuss menu is as fun as their motto: “Think dirty, eat clean”. The concept is simple and that is how we like it. Debbie Does Salad centers around – yes you guessed it – an epic salad bar. Complemented by slinging third wave coffee and fermented, fizzy Kombucha on tap and to complete the heaps of goodness, there is also delectable selection of raw cakes. And that is really all you ever need to eat. Oh wait, you will also need smoothie bowls – the newest addition to an already badass menu. The aromatic coffee blend is provided by none other than our ultimate favorite Expat Roasters, making sure that you will get a top-notch quality served in every cup! Coffee snobs of Canggu rejoice, no burned coffee beans or overheated milk anymore. The kombucha is masterfully brewed by …And the guilt free gluten free, raw cakes are homemade by Mindful Munchies.

www.thebeatbali.com
The way Debbie does the power salad is that you custom order your bowl. There is so many fixings we’d have to use this entire magazine to write it all out. Then you perfect it with free choice of dressing and salsa and all that will only set you back by 55K (yes that is less than $5)!! Need an extra protein kick? Add the tender Coconut Tamarind Chicken for 20K (2$). You are not likely to get tired of this joint as the combinations are pretty much endless. You also will not ever leave hungry, that is how gigantic the salad bowls are, not to mention utterly flavorsome. We are especially super in love the “make your own” option, our fave is adding halved Avocado onto all the green yumminess, talking about power lunch huh? And what everybody will love is that they are very friendly to your wallet. We could basically eat here on daily basis, and we do! We’ll race you to Debbie does salad on any given day. GROW G
CONTINUES TO EVOLVE
ROW at the L Hotel has recently incarnated into a casual, gastronomic affair, more suited to the digital age than the fine dining world it was attempting before. And, dare I say it, it’s better for it. The one major point that the hotel has had going for it from the beginning is the lovely rooftop bar on top of the building, which is now the new home to Grow. It remains a stunning space and great for a casual drink in the evening, one that’s often forgotten, but always worth a trip up the elevator. Being cooled by the evening breezes is another point in its favour. The downstairs part of the hotel and
62

the previous restaurant dining area and bar, has now been remodeled into a trendy, pop-up bar called Lady L and the mezzanine dining space to the rear changed to a digital co-working area for in-house and outside guests. It has all become very casual, accessible and friendly. The chefs at Grow are practicing a farm-to-table concept, meaning the freshest of produce is used to
FOOD make their simple, but creative menu. My partner and I took the ride up the elevator to try it out. The menu features Asian, Indonesian and Western and all the dishes we tried were tasty, fresh and very moderately priced. We dove straight into a couple of starters and why not, a couple of cocktails too. Since I had been on a high protein diet, I chose the STEAK TARTAR (70k) with their classic condiments, comfit egg, which is mashed into the raw meat and black bread croutons from the Grow starter list. My dining partner went for the SOTO AYAM (50k) with thin rice noodles, chicken and vegetables in a light chicken broth from the Asian starters menu. A nice way to kick off proceedings. We decided to try their famous, homemade pasta, sharing the RIGATONI PORTOBELLO (100k) with a tasty sauce made from Portobello mushroom, smoke bacon, creamy balsamic sauce, and spinach and parmesan tuiles. This was a delicious pasta dish, which made me think I should try them all. There are five pasta dishes on the menu. Next up were the mains proper. I ordered the PORK BELLY (120k), again from the Grow section, which arrived with two chunks of perfectly cooked pork belly, a pumpkin puree, sauteed spinach, braised grapes, walnuts and masala jus on the side. And then from the Asian mains menu came the BEBEK GARING (120k).This was a half local duck, marinated and then deep fried until crispy, and served with steam rice, and Balinese sambal. Not so good for my low carb diet, but according to my dining buddy, very crispy and tasty. We had hardly any room left, but had to give the desserts a run for their money and exceptional they were. We shared the CHOCOLATE SUNDAY (60k) with warm chocolate fudge cake, crunchy biscuit and chocolate ice cream drizzled with a chocolate
sauce. And the BASIL AND LEMON TART (60k) with layered crispy basil shortbread, lemon pure and cream, and vanilla ice cream. Both were super yummy and topped off a great meal.We also helped ourselves to more excellent cocktails during the meal, which really kept the dining and evening on a high. The new Grow is a great dining experience. Its no fuss, but quality produce dining concept is sure to be a hit with those looking for some decent, good food at reasonable prices and in comfortable surroundings. Good for a quiet interlude or boisterous group dining occasion. Drinking the first appetitive or the final cocktail while overlooking the Seminyak skyline from their delightful rooftop is also a true pleasure, not to be missed. [David Trauts]

The popular Balinese Satay is made of spiced mince fish wrapped around sticks of lemongrass and served in a traditional way over a burning charcoal. A flavorful local styled vegetable dish, Urap, and rice is also served to complete the Balinese tasting experience. This package would only be more complete with a sip of the cold drinks available at their Lone Palm Bar.

FOOD
The Salazon bar. The Kayu Aya street in Oberoi is generally thought of as a pretty casual location for dining and a date, but now Salazon has raised the bar without amping the price up too far. Formerly known as an up-market restaurant with a menu accentuating wood-fired cuisine and grill, Salazon had the reputation of being slightly on the heavy side, but that’s all changed and there’s nothing heavy about it anymore!
seen in their Penang Duck Curry, Massaman Lamb Shank and 3 Way Tacos to name a few. The expert team behind Salazon prides itself on serving their home-made versions of just about everything – from the famous dry aged meats, tomato sauces, relishes to the sourdough bread and even the butter that is served with it. After getting the run-down on the new direction, Salazon has taken, my date and I were quite excited to see what they could muster.
They have added a multitude of exciting and “friendlier” dishes to the menu. Keeping things First up on the menu, the Charcuterie platter light, but still inventive and tasty, with additional (190k) – a classic here and the perfect appetizer flavours from East Asia added to the mix, as to get a taste of what Salazon is all about.

Happiness is subjective depending on each individual. Therefore, the works displayed inside this exhibition are showcasing various kinds of interpretations and visual expressions responding to this theme. The artists are challenged to dig up the value and visual points that are closely related to the cultural aspects of Bali which resulted in artworks full of bright and dark colors with the modern touches of today’s painters. In this exhibition, you will see him let himself go in form and color, toward the unknown. Jl. Kayu Aya, Seminyak, Kuta

ART
I Kadek Suardana “Kacor” Born in Bali, I Kadek Suardana “Kacor” pursued his childhood passion to become an artist by enrolling in the Art Institute of Yogyakarta. Slowly but surely he found his own character in painting. Involving only paper and duct tape in his painting process, he was able to create distinct yet exceptional pieces of artwork.
instinct tells me. However, this means I need time to get things done. I struggled for quite long until I found my technique and visual output like what I’ve got right now. As for my drawing method, I make cuttings from paper and duct tape. Then I create a pattern, after its all done I cut it with cutter knives. It usually takes me 2-3 days to finish a drawing.
How did you begin your journey as an artist? It begun when I was very young. Back then, when I was studying at elementary school, I just loved doodling around at school. I didn’t enjoy subjects like science. The only subject I was waiting for was drawing. When you see my elementary school textbook, you will see doodles everywhere. Call it anything you want; scenery, superheroes, cartoons, I drew it all. Although it was not as good as it is right now. Then, I decided to study art after I graduated junior high. I always knew that I wanted to make a living through drawing. Thus, I decided to continue my study at SMSR in Batubulan, Bali. After I graduated high school, I went to Jogjakarta and studied at ISI Jogjakarta (Indonesia Art Institute). I started studying in that university in 2009 and finished in 2014 and stayed at Jogjakarta until this present time.
What is the object of your artwork? I love using nature and scenery as the subject of my drawings. I usually draw what I can find around me such as papaya and banana trees, cacti, and various plants. I also draw animals such as hens, pigs, dogs and cows. I draw all these because it is really near me and gives me a calming and comforting feeling.
Can you tell us more about your artwork? If you see my artwork, you can probably tell that I don’t follow any genre. I just follow what my
What message do you want to convey to your audience? Actually, there no such hidden message that my audience should find through my drawings. I just want my audience to enjoy the nature around me that I put into my drawings. To enjoy it by processing taste, mind and imagination, so as to bring forth nature with new dimensions and not reduce its aesthetic value and beauty. I want my audience to take care of nature by doing small things such as avoid littering and planting more trees, so that the nature remains beautiful and the earth will keep comfortable for our grandchildren to live in the future. www.thebeatbali.com

CD REVIEW
7/10 soundtrack scares
Thom Yorke Susperia A listening party was thrown back in December for Thom Yorke’s debut film soundtrack, Susperia, beneath Clerkenwell Prison – a candlelit dungeon with projections dancing across the walls. No one had yet seen Luca Guadagnino’s remake of Dario Argento’s horror classic, and it mattered little. Who better to score an unseen supernatural flick than the eerie Radiohead frontman, whose songwriting domain is jittery threats, vague nightmares and a creeping sense of dread? Yorke’s trademark paranoia finds new dimensions on this impressive soundtrack album. How his distinctive melancholia will blend in on screen remains to be seen (read: I haven’t seen it yet) but as a standalone album, Susperia works marvels.
Skeletal lullabies weave around mangled synth fantasias, ancient sounding chants and fingerpicked daydreams. The handful of sung compositions rank alongside “Harrowdown Hill” and “The Eraser” as his finest solo work. “The Hooks” decorates a cursed piano motif with strings concealing horrors: muffled groans, scurrying feet, the swoop and squelch of a blade puncturing flesh. Spooked hymns such as “Has Ended” conjure the ghosts of lost Radiohead B-Sides, while the electronic skits evoke lo-fi artists like James Blake. A demanding listen, it’s no walk in the park, but then it never is with Thom Yorke at the controls. Dan Ashcroft

The treatment starts with a five minute foot ritual with salt scrub to relieve tired toes. After, we layed on the bed to get a 60 minute Balinese massage using traditional techniques which consisted of firm finger, palm and elbow pressure that worked on the perfect points, resulting in relieved muscles. Done with the massage, it’s time to pamper our skin with a homemade formula of coconut body scrub. Smeared on our leg and arms with a gentle gliding movement, the scrub removed dead skin cells off our body. Afterwards, the treatment was followed by a coconut and frangipani body mask to moisture and soothe the skin. While waiting for the body mask to dry, we were pampered by a relaxing and pain relieving set of massages on our shoulders,
head, and face. After all the skin treatments were finished, we took a warm shower to clean everything. For the final touch, the therapists applied a coconut body lotion for a tropical skin glow effect. INGREDIENTS Body temple provides various ingredients for their treatments including a home made local products and imported premium products like Thalgo. For this Tropical Glow Body Treatment, the oil, scrub, body mask and lotion were all made of coconut and frangipani to promote a smooth skin and help ready it for the Balinese tropical weather. MAGIC Aside from their ranging offers of relaxing and healing treatments which combine modern, natural and traditional elements, a highlight for this spa experience goes to their location among the most prominent recreation clubs in Bali. Surrounded by all the entertainment needs for your family, this spa is surely a one stop shop for all pampering needs. The spa also provides an assortment of other services including a professional hairdresser, Tony & Guy Essensual, Spinalogic treatment, manicures, pedicures and a special Kids spa menu.
