ditorial
There’s nothing like having friends or family coming to stay for holidays with you in Bali and especially if they haven’t been here before. Suddenly, you are the life line for all their activities, showing them around and directing them to the best places and shows on offer. It’s fun and it can take you right back to the basics. It’s easy to forget how good it is here and seeing it through new people’s eyes can be a rejuvenating experience. Whether it’s dining in the best or the casual restaurants, or rockin’ into the bars and clubs, the Bali nightlife and general lifestyle has so much to offer and we should all be thankful we have the chance to live here. Meanwhile, the place just gets busier and busier. There are so many flights coming to Bali every day nowadays it’s mindboggling and what was normally the beginning of the slow period to Easter now appears to be just another busier month than the month before. Wow, let it rock. Comments from the VIPS. Okay, I’m very pleased with the beat mag, it can improve my English, and I know some activity happening in Bali, but sometimes I’m feeling bad because I can’t collect all of the mags. When I come to Circle-K, the mag is always out of stock, so I don’t have the mag completely. Regards, Anwar (As we’ve said before, door to door subscription is available at 200k. Send us an email) Like: everybody likes beat mag coz it’s very useful, a lot of information we can’t get especially for people out of Bali.. Dislike: no reason to make people dislike your mag just one advice, how if u add more information about gigs outside Bali? (Ed. A Jakarta Section perhaps?) Keep all the best and GOD bless all of us, amen. ODED PELED Double Six sat 13 march 11 pm After managing to enter Tel Aviv’s legendary ‘Allenby 58’ club at the age of 16, Oded Peled was instantly convinced that his future should be musically driven. Shortly after he found himself ‘the new DJ on the block’ in Finland and has since created one of the most respected management agencies in the country. the beat caught up with him before he walked his DJ bag into Double Six… Your musical journey started in Israel and then moved to Finland in your teens, what prompted the move and how did it influence your music? I have lived in both countries in my childhood and teens because my mother re-married with a Finnish man. In other words, the reason for moving to Finland was love. One of my biggest influences would have to be the sound of Amsterdam in the late 90’s but I think my musical influences come from a very wide spectrum of people, countries and club scenes due to the big amount of artists I have heard and seen play in different places around the globe.

mic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthem In your opinion, what influence has your production company Misc. Management had on the Finish and international music scene? Our agency has always been driven by passion, but we have raised the bar for ourselves by trying to make each event even more memorable and special. I hope and believe that our work has raised the level of professionalism and drive for promoters, DJ’s and artists in Finland. Internationally we have been a part of spreading the sound and talent of Finnish DJ’s to the world.
Who have been your favorite musicians to work with and why? It really is hard to choose, but the most inspirational ones have been Dimitri from Amsterdam, Guy Gerber, Josh Wink, Nick Warren, Sister Bliss and José Padilla. After over 10 years of DJ bookings I look at things a little differently and for me it is not only about the music you play, but the way you react with people and the way you live your life.
You have played at some of the world’s most prestigious events including Ministry Of Sound, Renaissance Worldwide Stockholm, The End Sound System, Chemistry on Tour and Gatecrasher. What has been your favorite gig to date and why? The two that will always stay with me would be a warehouse party in-front of 3000 people in Tallinn, Estonia. It was held in an old soviet factory that felt as if it could fall apart at any moment. The crowd was dancing on the old machines at the factory and I felt as if I could simply not go wrong with anything I played… The second gig would be quite the opposite in many ways. A sunset gig at Ku De Ta in Bali was a really beautiful experience. The vibe on the island and the amazing venue had a lot to do with it.
enjoyed my gigs in Asia the most and am always excited to return to this part of the world.
You’ve played in Bali before; what were your impressions of the place and the people? What are you expecting this time around? I have visited Bali twice in the past and have completely fallen in love with the Island. I have played at Double Six, Ku De Ta, Liquid and M Bar Go. Out side of these gigs I tend to enjoy the more quiet things on the island. I’m expecting to enjoy the sea, do some yoga and spend time breathing in all of the beauty the island has in it.
You have been DJing for over 14 years, producing music, working as a booking agent, organizing events, and getting to see what goes on the stage and behind it. Are there any areas of music or music production that you would still like to get involved in , in the future? I really enjoy many different parts of what the electronic music business offers and will most probably continue doing a bit of everything. More than anything I would be interested in working as an artistic director for a high quality venue one day. When the time is right…
Has there ever been a time in which you felt like the industry was beating you, whether it be battling to make a name for yourself or feeling out of balance with your lifestyle? Yes, that has definitely happened to me in the past and I have then usually turned my energy to other types of work and living. Looking back, I am pretty sure that it could have happened to me at any job I would have been doing so passionately for a long time. I know now the importance of having good people around you and not fighting against your instincts.
What does 2010 have in store for you?
Do you choose international shows based on the countries you want to visit or is it generally based on where the money is at? Anywhere you have enjoyed more than others?
2010 has some big events and some even bigger DJ bookings planned. Looks like there is going to be a lot of work to do. I’m also looking forward to the Finnish summer, which is always a huge buzz.
Honestly speaking DJ’s do gigs for two reasons. Money and/or experiences. I try to balance both of these and feel as if I’m doing a good job at it. I have always

Signal to Noise and the Joe Rosenberg Quartet This time last year, Bali had the pleasure of a visit from group of musicians who play together as two different bands. Under the direction of Joe Rosenberg, ‘Signal to Noise’ blends both Western and Eastern contemporary classical music and explores jazz improvisation through Joe’s own compositions, while the ‘Joe Rosenberg Quartet’ plays a selection of jazz standards, stunningly interpreted live. They’re back in town for a few shows this month so we caught up with Joe for a chat…
So how has the last year been for you all since playing in Bali this time in 2009? Shortly after our last time in Bali we released a new CD called TAG, which has gotten some nice reviews. And we had tours in France and China. Any particular experiences on the road that stand out for you? Having opportunities to make music with these great musicians and present my music is always exciting. We did do one performance in China that turned out to be a bit surreal, a bit like being in a “B” grade movie. What have been some of the most exciting shows for you? During our tour in France we performed at Radio France which was later broadcast internationally. It was one of the best concerts, both in terms of our playing as well as the circumstances, fantastic acoustics, equipment, technicians, and an attentive, experienced audience. What brings you back to Bali? We will be performing at the Mosaic Music Festival on the 12th & 13th of March in Singapore, and then at No Black Tie, a jazz club in Kuala Lumpur, from the 14th to the 16th. So we will already be in the neighborhood and no one in the band ever objects to coming to Bali!

Left to right: Edward Perraud on drums and percussion, Joe Rosenberg on soprano saxophone and bass clarinet, Peter Scherr on double bass and Masako Hamamura on piano.
Any new sounds to your set that we can look forward to? Possibly. I’m working on some music for our next CD, of which I’ve completed about half of. This recording will be primarily other people’s compositions except for maybe one or two of mine. The overall concept is pieces of music that are rhythmically compelling, to me at least. It will include a few classical compositions, a rock piece, a rap piece, as well as Indian and Balinese inspired pieces, and a bebop composition. We’re going to have a couple of days of rehearsals in Singapore and hopefully we’ll be able to do at least a couple of the new pieces, if not more. What kind of audiences do you anticipate having? The last couple of years that we’ve played in Bali we’ve had full turnouts at almost all of our performances. While some of the audiences are regular jazz listeners, some are not. But I think people enjoy our energy and interplay even if some of what they’re hearing is new for them, so the response has been great. JRQ will play at Siam Sally, Ubud Thurs18 March 8pm. StN will play at Warung Keramic, Jimbaran Fri 19 March 7:30pm and Casa Luna, Ubud Sat 20 March 7:30pm.

Sven the Freak de ja ‘vu fri 19 march 10 pm
A well known spinner on the Swiss scene, Sven has been freaking out audiences for over a decade and has consequently become a resident DJ for the German label Housession. He’s extending his reach beyond Europe next week with a show at Deja’vu. The Beat got personal…
So is the term ‘freak’ self titled, a name bestowed on you by friends or just an easy slide from Fricker?
How did you initially break into the dance scene in Switzerland? Do you find it to be a competitive or supportive industry?
“Freak” goes back to when I was in the army. Everybody called me Freak because of my surname “Fricker”.
I came into the Swiss Dance and Club Scene aged 16. I played at almost every Venue around my area and so it continued with getting a gig at the famous Pravda Club in Lucerne. There I learned what it means to be a good and skillful DJ. In the 90’s and early 00’s the scene was more supportive. In the last years it has turned more competitive and superficial! At the moment, the Swiss Scene is very down and most of the Clubs and
What is the best definition of your style? It‘s a mixture of House & Electro-house combined with some ruff progressive and acapella loops, or simply said, electronic house music.

mic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthem promoters only want to make money. Breathtaking and unforgettable venues are sadly only secondary!
Tell us about the label Housession and how you came to be one of their resident DJ’s… I became a Resident DJ for Housesession in 2004. I played a warm up set for the Tune Brothers in Switzerland in ‘02 and the chemistry on both sides was very good! From that I was invited for radio-sets and more often for DJ shows, in the south part of Germany through Housesession. My reputation grew and I played beside super stars like David Guetta, David Morales or Ministry of Sound. Ultimately it was the interpersonal moments, a level of DJ success and perhaps the Swiss-touch that made me a resident for the Housesession Label. Now I’m very happy for the angle of the label in terms of productions. The label is still kicking out very good tracks and the parties cannot be put into words!
David Guetta was also very massive. Last but not least, meeting the guys from Housesession was the greatest thing for me. Without this connection I would never have come so far!
What’s getting the most playtime on the Freak’s ipod at the moment? Tony Gomez - Tell Me (Stereo Riders Remix, our Remix I did with my Homie Rogero! Should be kicked out soon!). Deep Swing - In The Music 2010 (Cristian Marchi Perfect Remix). David Bernardi feat Sophia May Heartbeat (Jeroenski & Jorn Dubmix). Grandmaster Flash - White Line. John Dahlback - Autumn (Extended Dub). The Temper Trap - Sweet Disposition (Axwell & Dirty South Remix) ...and plenty more!
Having played extensively in both Germany and Switzerland, what would you say are the major differences between the electronic scenes in each country? Is one breaking more ground than the other? In my point of view there is a big difference between the scenes. In Switzerland you have to play very commercial sounds! Germans are more open. For me it was always easier to play my records in Germany as the crowd accepted my definition of a DJ set and sound.
Do you think that the digital downloads and the ease of touring is causing most of Europe to mesh into a similar sound or do individual countries still stand out as having unique dance music cultures? I’m sure there is a mixture of both. Every country has its own dance music culture and some parts of the world are leading with new sounds, others are years behind of this electronic music revolution, and that’s good!
The biggest highlights of your career so far? After a long time into DJ‘ing it’s very hard to put the focus on only one highlight, my whole career has been a highlight so far, but playing at Bora Bora in Ibiza (2005) was awesome and the five hour introduction for

fficially dubbed ‘King of Panda’ in July of 2008, buddies Choqy and Kompas originally formed this band as a means of chasing away the boredom blues. Once the right drummer and bass player joined the team things got a lot more serious and before they knew it, fans of their take on Hardcore Pop Punk gained in numbers. The ‘Panda’ in the title is actually an acronym for ‘Panutan Kawula Muda’ (Good influence for youngsters), flowing with the band’s belief that they are a positive influence on their fans, which they refer to as ‘Kawan Panda’ (Panda’s friends). ith the idea of creating an outlet of musical expression for its members, ‘Amazing in Bed’ were formed in 2004 and immediately set to work on a sound that reflected their combined backgrounds. Aiming to represent the urban platform which they grew up in, their songs have a garage punk, pop rock mix of sounds with influences from the likes of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Killers, Radiohead and No Doubt. The band name came straight from the lyrics of a track by British Indie band Ooberman and the members say it stands for the naughty side of

their musical creativity. 2008 saw the switching of the front woman as Vina left for Holland to pursue her studies and Australian girl Lani stepped up to the mic, taking her place. Steadily growing a fan base and getting onto as many stages as possible has been the focus for this indie gang of power poppers, most recently strutting their goods at the Beat Rock Fest at Hard Rock Café in Jakarta. Amazing in Bed also released their first self titled album through indie label Huria! last year so get it into your collection.

Defining
Electronic music has taken the world by storm, proving to be an art form that is not only here to stay, but will continually reinvent itself through evolving genres and the experimental ideas of those who produce its sounds. There are plenty of titles for the varying styles of dance music and attempting to define them can be like trying to describe color to a blind man. So who better to ask than some of our leading players…
the DJ
Trance
According to DJ Ardi Pite The definition of Trance is… “… a type of electronic music which has formed as a sub genre from House Music and developed back in the 1990’s. Elements of this electronic style were heavily influenced by New Wave which was popularized back in the 1980’s by groups like New Order, Pet Shop Boys and many others. It was the combination of many different music genres such as Industrial, House and Techno along with a synthesizer added into the mix that led to a new sub genre we call Trance. Trance usually has the characteristics of a tempo between 130BPM155BPM and is seen as a type of club music which can now be further divided into sub genres such as Progressive Trance, Tech Trance, Minimal Trance, Goa Trance and Electro Trance”

I chose trance simply because I like music that is pumping with melodic sounds mixed in, to me the soul of the music is more inspiring compared to other genres
Interesting facts: Although the origin of the name ‘Trance’ for this genre is unknown, German composer Klaus Schulze produced a number of albums in the early 80’s consisting of experimental sounds to create deeply atmospheric and sequencer driven ‘space sounds’. Beyond sharing similarities with today’s trance music, two of his albums contained the word ‘trance’ in their titles and some believe this is where the name originated. Many consider Germany to be the birthplace of trance culture thanks to producers such as Jam El Mar, Oliver Lieb, and Sven Väth pioneering the movement.
Ardi Pite first got his taste for trance music back in 1992 and has been heating up the Indonesian dance scene since 1998 with a constant stream of shows throughout Indonesia’s most popular clubs. Ardi was voted The Best DJ of the Year in 2004 at the Paranoia Awards and won the Ravelex Award for The Best Trance DJ of The Year in 2005. He has shared the decks with international DJ’s such as Mason, Binary and Finarry and after making a solid impression supporting Tiesto in 2006 on his Indonesian tour, he recently followed it up with another round when Tiesto performed at Ancol in Jakarta on February 13th...

O
ver 230 belly dancers from around the world took part in Asia’s Belly Dance Festival held at the Ayodya Resort in Nusa Dua from the 25th to the 28th of February. The movers and shakers came from far and wide to attend the numerous workshops, training sessions, talk shows, dance competitions and spectacular night shows. One of the participants in the event was the maestro of world-class belly dancing from the United States, Jillina. ‘Jillina & Belly Dance Evolution’ is a big name that has helped to popularize this Middle Eastern folk dance in the US and Europe with both ordinary folk and top-level celebrities. “Jillina successfully made belly dance popular in the dance industry which is worth millions of dollars. Belly dancing is now trendy. Currently Jillina flies from one country to another to promote this dance style,” said Festival Director, Felix Rusli. The good news is that Asia’s Belly Dance Festival will return to Bali next year, due to the warm welcome that it received this year. “The belly dancer community in Asia has reached almost 40 thousand, and the number continues to increase,” added Felix. www.bellydancefestivalbali.com

Situated on Kuta’s Legian Street, Double D is the quintessential sports bar, as well as a restaurant and club. Open 24 hours a day, this is the perfect setting in which to merge your love for sports with great food.
086 | beatmag.com
Double D offers informal dining at its best with an outdoor bar area where guests can munch on their all-time favourite bar grub while watching live sports action on one of the three big screens above the bar. The bright neon lighting in the bar area adds to the festive atmosphere. Ever since its inception in 2003, Double D Sports Bar has been popular with Aussie men and this trend is obviously continuing as the words ‘mate’, ‘cobber’ and ‘fair dinkum’ seem to be the order of the day (or night) at this chilled out establishment. However, since the recent opening of the Double D club numerous non-sports related music events have also been held on the premises.
The club sports four screens above the bar and two above the front entrance for your viewing pleasure, and the tasty food can also be consumed here while you cheer for your favourite team or watch your favourite band. Do not miss the live sport matches beemed in by satellite TV enabling you to get up to date results. While sports action is best enjoyed with a cold beer in hand, an imaginative menu of classic American and European dishes served 24/7 can definitely complement your viewing experience. Get the game off to a smooth start with a light meal such as a Cottage Pie; meat sauce topped with mashed potatoes and cheese (30K++); Penne Gratin; penne pasta mix with meat sauce topped with cheese (30K++) or Fish Fingers; breaded fish served with tartar sauce (20K++). There is also a wide range of sandwiches in case you feel like something bready. Try the Double D Burger; home made beef patty, bacon, cheese, fried egg and salad served with fries (40K++); Double D Chicken Baguette; minute steak, saute onion, cheese, served with salad and fries (40K++); or the Grilled Snapper (250g); fillet of fresh snapper with butter lime garlic served with salad and fries (49K++). There is a wide range of main courses in case you get mid-game munchies including: Double D Fillet Steak (200 g); grilled fillet steak served with potatoes and mixed salad (59K++), Chicken Cream Mushroom; grilled marinated chicken blanquette with mushroom, bacon cream sauce served with
mashed potatoes (45K++). Pizza (22cm or 28cm) and pasta is also on offer and includes Carbonara; carbonara sauce topped with bacon and cheese (35K++) or the Double D Special Pasta; penne pasta, shrimp, chicken, avocado mix with cream sauce topped with cheese (40K++). And when it comes to booze, Double D will certainly not disappoint the thirsty. The establishment serves some of the all-time favourite cocktails such as Caprioska (56K++); vodka, fresh lime, sugar and ice; Frozen Margerita (56K++); tequila, triple sec, lime juice with ice; Mojito (56K++); light rum, lime juice, sugar, mint, soda water and ice, Black Russian (60K++); vodka, kahlua, coke and ice. A wide range of spirits and cigarettes is also on offer to complement your arm-chair sports experience and there is free WiFi throughout the premises. So whether you are into cricket, footy or soccer, grab a coldie, some ace tucker and secure your pozzie at Double D. Text: Zanita, Photos: Anike beatmag.com | 087

A little local knowledge on some local favorites...
Billy’s Beach Bar Famous for beaches where an icy cold beer or soft drinks are only a hand wave away, Bali has plenty of leisure spots to choose from and there are vendors scattered from Kuta to Kerobokan waiting to lead you to a beach chair for the day. One popular spot in particular is Billy’s Beach Bar on Padma beach in Legian (in front of Mandira Beach Resort). Thanks to a bunch of local ex-pats making it their regular after work watering hole, this little patch of sand has become a traditional sunset catch up spot and nobody is happier about it than Billy himself. Stop by for a drink and a chat next time you head down for some waves…

art
B
ali is undoubtedly well known in the world of fine art as a place that has given birth to many artists, either it be because of descended talent, environmental impact or even artistry skills gained through formal education. Bali’s beautiful scenery, unique traditions and its spiritual power have inspired artists to work, both in the realm of traditional and modern contemporary art, which today has become a world trend and until today it is still an inspiration for foreign artists who reside and create art in Bali. This exhibition visualizes
From Beyond
the expressions of Bali through an expatriate artist’s point of view and is expected to bring a new barometer for the national art scene to produce works of art with international quality. Return to Abstraction
R
eturn to Abstraction is an exhibition presenting the art works of 25 of Bali’s abstract artists including Nyoman Erawan, I Ketut Tenang, I Wayan Sujana “Suklu”, Gusti Alit Cakra and others. The exhibition aims to show other artists in Bali as well as the world just how developed the many forms of abstract art have become, especially amongst the Balinese art community. The use of contemporary abstract forms within Balinese paintings was only introduced in the 80’s and it is fascinating to see how much it has developed and the many artists that have adopted this unique form of artistry. Through this exhibition, it is hoped that the concepts and ideas of Balinese abstract paintings will further evolve. Date : March 18 – April 10. Venue : Tony Raka Art Gallery, Mas, Ubud. WHOSE
art
CANVAS IS THIS ?
BAMBANG P Born in Klaten, West Java.
Concept
Art for Bambang is an integral part of expressing his feelings and thoughts; he believes that being artful is having the willingness to express one’s unease with the things around them. In order to better achieve this, Bambang purposely keeps many of his anxieties within himself and allows them to motivate his creativity, training himself to become more productive artistically. He says that what he has currently gained artistically are only tiny steps towards an even longer road ahead. From each period of distress, Bambang has developed a mental strategy to tackle his anxieties and use his creative outlet to continue evolving his art form, causing it to never become stagnant. A skill he believes is important is the ability to maintain a certain character with one’s work while

still evolving as an artist and moving into new territory.
background and exhibitions
Bambang has held various solo exhibitions in Jakarta, Jogjakarta and Bali, and participated in various exhibitions including the Manifesto Art Exhibition at Jakarta’s National Gallery, Biennal Jogja X exhibition and the “Reborn” exhibition at Semarang. To date his biggest award is the top fifth position at The Philip Morris Group of Companies Indonesia Art Award in 1995.

Keith learned to ‘scratch’ from a Music Box Video and was inspired by Barry B, a DJ who happened to live next door and taught him ‘Cuts & Tricks’ techniques. From that day on Keith participated in DJ Battle competitions every chance he got, eventually coming out victorious. He later joined ‘The X-ecutioners’ along with other young and talented turntable aces. is Now Red Square’s weekly Urban Episodes event is giving you another dose of Hip Hop and RnB when Keith performs alongside DJ Ruffie and DJ Reza. This is a great chance to see a world class turntable ace in action so head down to Red Square!
