T
he World Cup Qualifying Round changed the nightlife parameters and also many people’s sleeping habits over the past two weeks. Unless the entertainment on offer was something extraordinary and out of this world the punters were quite happy to stay at home or gather at the local bar or restaurant to watch the game, forgetting everything else on offer. While some venues gave up and brought in the big screen, others have stuck to there guns and surprisingly some events did manage to pull a crowd while others, unfortunately failed dismally. Also, with so many venues offering the World Cup not all of those were guaranteed a crowd. Every time our team played, the text messages bounced around town like ping pong trying to locate and gather the hoard at the appropriate venue. Some places were packed and full of atmosphere and others could only muster a handful. Hmmm, that’s the way it goes, you have to be in it to win it, as they say. Check all of last week’s action around town in the Therethen section. The Beat recently began updating daily its facebook page with ‘what’s on’ material. Since we have around 5000 fans on that page we thought we’d try to gauge if it was effective or not to give them information on a daily basis. So far the reaction has been good with many people accessing the information via facebook on their computers and handphones. This is handy when one is finishing dinner and thinking about where to go next. A couple of clicks on your smartphone and all the information is there for both Bali and Jakarta. We’ll be developing a new system to access the info direct from our website on your phone soon, but for now, please try the What’s On direct from facebook. The Beat Magazine Bali page. Enjoy your two weeks here on the island and may the best team win on the night.

BHA Launches a New Website and Advertising Campaign.
Bali Hotels Association (BHA) launched their new and improved website www. balihotelsassociation.com and at the same time re-launched the Bali is My Life campaign during a press conference held on Friday 11 June at The Westin Resort and Spa. The upgraded and updated site is the result of years of analysis, design, and programming presenting a brand new look and style. The new website also contains links to Bali Is My Life movie trailer as well as Bali Is My Life community members’ backgrounds and campaign support material. Once connected, visitors can see the most updated news and find what they need in the very first page of the website. This saves time clicking through pages and searching through a sea of information. Users can now also easily access archival and cross-referenced information, making it easy for everyone to find out everything they need to know about Bali. Indonesia’s Minister of Culture and Tourism, Jero Wacik had some fine words to say about foreigners supporting their local friends, and most of BHA general managers were in attendance.

A Better Future for Bali’s Turtles
Amongst the hundreds of thousands of residents and tourists that work and play in Kuta, who would guess that this stretch of sand is a nesting ground for sea turtles? In Bali, the Olive Ridley species in particular have been coming to the Kuta Beach area for centuries to lay their eggs. As the sea turtle’s population slowly declines through the years due to the continuing development of the Kuta area, a few dedicated individuals from ProFauna group have been relocating eggs to a hatchery to help preserve the sea turtles existence. Recognizing the group’s efforts, Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia (CCAI) has offered a helping hand by teaming up with Quiksilver, to build a permanent hatchery facility in the shape of a giant sea turtle known as Kuta Beach Sea Turtle Conservation (KBSTC). The KBSTC which was officially opened on the 19th of June, which is conveniently located at the beachside front of Inna Kuta Beach Hotel and has received support from the Balinese authorities, ProFauna Indonesia and Bali Forestry; and aims to release over 12 thousand baby sea turtles by the end of 2010.

Hails From Venice, Italy
Has Been Music has influenced the life of Venetian-born Monica Bragato (aka Moony) ever since she was a little girl growing up in Italy. During the early 70s it was funky house and disco music blasting out of her family’s radio. By the 80s she was wearing out the cassette tapes of great bands like Toto and Genesis, as well as the first wave of boy bands like Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet and Wham. Moony absorbed all this music like a sponge, and just for fun, began to record a few demo tapes. A friend heard one of them and dragged her down to a local audition, where despite her initial stage fright she gave a perfect performance, and was instantly recruited. Since that life-changing moment of singing in front of strangers for the first time, Moony has never looked back and the rest is history. She has collaborated with an endless list of global DJs, producers and groups, and her first solo album ‘Lifestories’ has won critical acclaim for its wide-ranging use of different musical styles and genres. Is Now Armed with a stack of new material, Moony is making a trip to the shores of Bali for a very special gig at the Hard Rock Cafe on Saturday the 26th June. feature Local Spotlight Taking a closer look at some talented individuals in our midst. This week...
We’ve heard that you’ll be heading to Australia soon to work with a producer there, is this true? Yes I hope to arrive on the 25th of June, this Friday. I have been fortunate enough to have caught the interest of a couple of Sydney based producers and a few located in the states as well. I’m very excited about being invited to come and work with these amazing talents and the potential of it all. Robert Conley has had a number of hits with his latest being Brian McFadden’s latest number one “Just Say So” and Stuart Chritchley is responsible for a huge list of successful soloists and bands. I highly value and respect their individual talents and look forward to working with them. How did this Opportunity come about? On my last trip back from Sydney I was seated next to a man by the name of Peter Coquillard. We finally got on to the topic of music and it turned out Peter is a leading man at Nettwerk One Music, a publishing company that manages the copyrights of many artists including Sarah McLachlan and he’s also played a part in producing successful pop artists such as Madonna, Rhianna, Britney Spears and more. Peter suggested I get involved in an idea he was pursuing for a Songwriter Retreat in Bali… Songwriter Retreat? Peter was organizing a Professional Songwriter retreat to be attended by various invited professionals such as singers, song writers and record producers from Australia, USA, Japan

and Sweden. The purpose of the retreat was to bring together this amazing group of professionals and have them write and record every day. The results were even better than anticipated by the organizers and they believe at least 3 big hits will come out of this first retreat. It will now become an annual or maybe even bi-annual event for Bali and even more famous names will be present on the next one, although it will be extremely exclusive and available by invitation only. So the camp ended up being a stepping stone for you? Peter had me on board as his PA, arranging equipment hire and the like. One of the activities we organized was a jam session at the Jazz Café in Ubud. I ended up getting up to sing for the first few songs and it was them that Robert and Stuart became interested in working with me. What are you hoping to achieve in Australia? I am hoping for professional recognition and a good name in the industry amongst respected artists, musicians, writers and producers. But the most valuable achievement I would wish for right now is the opportunity to make a decision during this phase about the best direction for me to take my music and personal style. Do you think there are more opportunities for success in the Australian Music industry? I’d be better able to answer this question when I return! If you don’t see me back here in the near future then you know the answer is ‘Yes’ BUT, I

will always return to Bali and I hope I’ll always be welcome on stages here too! Which country do you feel that your heart belongs? I was born and raised here in Bali and I know it inside out so without hesitation, Indonesia has my heart forever. What are your plans for your band in Bali? I will continue to work with the Freedom Jazz Band guys as much as I possibly can. They are such great musicians and such great people and I feel privileged and grateful to work with them. Define your music style in 3 words… Sexy, soulful, and comedic. I don’t like it if it’s too serious, I don’t know what to say when the atmosphere begins to grow colder so I just crack it out! I listen to a lot of soulful players like Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, N.E.R.D. and such. Your name defines that Indo taste, but at play your sound is global. What’s the background? My dad came from Medan, Sumatra, while my Mom is from Sydney. I grew up in Bali and got this musical influence and singing talent from my dad. Do you play instruments yourself? Yes I play keys and guitar and I’m on a mission writing my own songs at the moment.

Mar apu Expressing their Freedom
W
ith a band name derived from the name of a Sumba cult, you can be sure these guys take their reggae infused brand of peace, love and freedom seriously. The Beat chatted to the boys after they hit the stage at Mannekepis…
So Marapu, what’s behind the name? Marapu is a cult, almost like a religion that began and grew in Sumba island, Timor. Just like reggae first expanded, coming from an island, then widening to larger states… Most of you guys come from the island of Sumba, but you ended up meeting in Jogjakarta, and you perform in other cities and islands around Indonesia. How does it feel? It’s like an adventure of our own from which many stories begin, being in a band together and playing gigs across geographical boundaries and such. It would never happen without the music. It’s the element that unites us all and brought us freedom in expression. I heard you rocked the show at Sumba to a crowd of thousands; tell us about it… We hit three spots in Sumba, the first one gathered 25,000 people, the second spot broke over 10,000 and the last one held 40,000. Amazing. Maybe it’s because they sense that we’re those ‘local boys’ playing in the hood. Plus we had already sold the album on the island. Bob Marley obviously gets plenty of air time, but who do you listen to for reggae influences besides papa Bob? We often listen to names like Alfa Blondie, Big Mountain, Oyaba, Ziggy Marley, and a little bit of UB40. Are there a lot of reggae bands from Jogjakarta? When we started out around ’99, a few existed, about five bands. But now as time grows along with the music the scene is quite big. There are about 40 bands or more in the city and we’re a part of the IRC (Indonesian Reggae Club) mission in the country. How have you made it through to this stage of your band journey? We hustle to build Marapu with consistency, patience, and everything else just comes along the way.
076 | beatmag.com
Tell us about the making of Marapu’s newest album “Peace Love & Freedom”. We put six songs on from our previous album, and five new fresh songs. It’s all about peace, love, and the state of freedom from a universal perspective. There’s also a strong element of pop in the album, what’s the mission? As we know, there is roots and party reggae to take part in. Marapu is standing in both lines. Marapu style; define peace, love and freedom? Peace, it’s for everyone to have. Love is who we are. Freedom is what we’re doing, freedom of expression. Rastafarian religion is a subjective view of life from Jamaica. How do you combine it with Indonesian culture? We can’t adopt all the elements of Rastafarian culture. For example the original songs from that culture tell a lot about craving for a country’s freedom, while our country got freedom ages ago. So we decide to just believe in the art form, and play the music… Any rituals before stepping out onto the stage? Pray, and shout together! You’ve played a stack of gigs in Bali this week, how has it been? Fantastic. Once again amazing. At first we felt the challenge was big, but once we hit the stage, the crowds were so sweet. We thank them all for accepting us nicely! Marapu shout out? Let’s raise our banner higher for reggae. Keep your fire on! Marapu are: Feryanto - Vocals, Diyan and Beny - Guitars, Iwan - drums, Dondho - Bass, Khoebischo Percussion, Neloz - Keyboard. Contact them at marapu.band@yahoo.com

Andrea Bali Hull Girl This is a normal article. and what is a normal article one might ask? Good question. I was asked to do an article on a day in the life of a normal expatriate living in Bali. Do I know a normal expat living in Bali? As far as I can remember from near and far they have all been rebels without a clause to some degree, and so flip, flop and fly as I endeavored to pursue the ‘normal expat’... Until I came upon this Bali girl… Andrea Hull.
S.B. So normal person, what do you consider normal? A.H. Normal? There are no boundaries to normal. S.B. Do you consider yourself normal? A.H. Yes. No actually I’m not, compared to other people on the other side of the world. I’m a Bali normal.
S.B So what are you then exactly? A.H. Andrea Hull, age forty five, born in New York, moved to Florida until age thirteen, then moved to Columbia which brought on a different culture. I went to the British system school there as well. That was my first exposure to the international world. After graduation I went back to the states and realized I didn’t want to stay there. There was another world out there. I moved to Paris for thirteen years and studied graphic design at Parsons, then hospitality leisure which lead to corporate leisure and incentive and destination companies, and that led to becoming a corporate events coordinator.
S.B. Where did the Bali Girl name come from? A.H. I write a travel log under Bali Sunshine and kind of made the crossover from that.
078 | beatmag.com
feature S.B. Were you ever married? A.H. Briefly, I’m not meant to be married. I’m good with a partner.
S.B. When did you come to Bali and what brought you here? A.H.I did a trip to the French Polenta and had what I call a Kundalini rush. I had an experience; I kind of awoke, felt extreme happiness in life and started meditation and yoga, then went back to Florida and did more meditating. I had a vision where I would be selling everything and giving up everything to travel the world. So I said oh, Ok. Time passed, certain signs started to appear, I thought it was time to do that trip, so I quit my job. S.B. Which was what? A.H. I was a corporate events coordinator. Sold my condo, gave away eighty percent of what I owned and traveled for fourteen months and ended up in Bali.
S.B. And what has it been like until now? A.H. For one year I had been studying Asian and different philosophies of gurus and swamis and I wanted to put into practice what I had been learning. It all started to be very repetitious, so the idea was to walk the talk. One year doing that and I then found myself assisting someone in real estate ventures. That lasted two and half years, then came the mid-life crisis.
S.B. This is getting juicy. A.H. I had a medical checkup and they said if I didn’t do certain things an operation would be needed. Instead of an operation or medicated drugs, I asked for some time in order to look for other venues of healing. Along that course I met my macrobiotic nutritionist, Liat. I did a cleansing for a month and also looked into Thailand, but it was much cheaper here, also there were a lot more people here helping me with many kinds of treatments that work with cleansing. Within that month the changes were radical. I continued for the year to see if I could reverse or at least alleviate the health issue. Within that time I inspired a friend to come over here who had a tumor in her womb, she came to see the people who were working with me and one year later the tumor had shrunk, and eventually alleviated. That was an inspiration for me to continue on myself.
080 | beatmag.com
S.B. At that point, you were here three years. Did you stop working through this cleansing period? A.H. Yes, I was cleansed and decided to leave Bali at some point, then the world crisis. It was suggested and advised by family members to remain in Bali and see how things go, ten months and the bug hit me to leave. I had bags packed and ready to go, five days before my departure I had a motorcycle accident, had an operation on my leg, and now I am handicapped. S.B. So Bali chose you? Are you sure I should be writing an article and not a book? What was your main reason for wanting to leave? A.H. To do what I like to do, which is continuing coordinating events. This time, holistic and organic, towards helping people help themselves. S.B. Which brings us? A.H. …to what I’m doing now in Bali. So now I’m working with a tour operator and creating wellness packages, which will list a menu of options of different ways for people to heal and to learn the tools of alternative healing and to make better choices in life.
S.B. Are you planning to stay here? A.H. Bali is unpredictable; my accident showed me how five minutes can alter one’s life totally. To put plans in concrete is difficult.
S.B. What would you like to pass on to ‘would be’ Bali personage? A.H. That’s a good question. Well Bali is a place of healing; we don’t carry the same amount of stress possibilities in the western world. This is a great place if we desire to take some time off and do some healing. This is an excellent place to do that. As far as day-to-day living goes, don’t bring your western habits here, try to be here with an open mind and be flexible to change. I believe there is a time and a place for everyone depending on where they are in their life. The reason I say this is because people have asked me many times, “Where’s your favorite place that you have lived?” The answer to that right now, Bali… S.B. So eat, pray and love. Chow mein, Salvador Bali

Local elders and kids alike have learned to live with the threat of Malaria.
‘M

As my buttocks clench together on the Merpati airlines seat and a cold sweat forms across my forehead I catch the eye of Geoff, two seats in front of me. His look mirrors my thoughts, “Why the hell didn’t we jump in the Kijang with the Frenchies?” Flight MZ300 to Bima banks hard right and treats everyone to a lovely, yet somewhat unappreciated view of the Bukit peninsula before touching back down on the Ngurah Rai tarmac. Mercifully still in one piece. Ahhh, the joys of Indonesian domestic airlines. Never has island-hopping been more perilous. Meanwhile, like some Top Gear challenge, our friend Romain and the rest of his French contingent inch ever closer to our final rendezvous point of Lakey Beach in East Sumbawa, proving that airtravel is not always the best option. The next day brings yet more delays. The Gods clearly were not smiling on this Bali exit, yet 26 hours later than expected we are finally bouncing

down the shoddy excuse for a runway at Bima airport, much to the relief (and applause) of all passengers. Once through the chaotic arrivals lounge and out onto the road (one of the only three main roads in Sumbawa – yeah, it’s rural) everything changes and memories of any previous trauma melt away into a blur of salt flats, dusty foothills, horses pulling carts and constant cries of ‘ELLOMISTEEER’ from the local kids along the way. Occupying an area three times that of Lombok, Sumbawa is split into four regencies and one main city – the northern port town of Bima - which we quickly watch disappear in the rear view mirror. Lakey beach is located about a 2.5 hour drive south from Bima, and is regularly serviced by a crew of apparently insane bemo drivers who all treat the trip as some kind of mad race. With one hand on the novelty horn and the other keeping a Dje Sam Soe cigarette on the go, our driver’s casual nonchalance is impressive even by local standards as we hurtle along the narrow highway, forcing everything else into the ditch. Arriving in Dompu I’m able to loosen my vice-like grip on the

dashboard for the first time as we ease into the local traffic and go in search of an atm, but it’s another hour before we roll into Lakey Beach Inn and are able to take up position, bintang in hand, and truly slow down. Looking surprisingly fresh after their marathon drive, the French garcons arrive the following morning with the unsettling news from Bima that the plane we came over on never left the runway after we had landed, and was still sitting on the tarmac waiting for a spare part to arrive from Jakarta. Luckily, XL hasn’t quite made it to this part of Indonesia yet, and my phone shows no bars meaning I can’t call anyone to check on this. I decide that no news is good news and happily surrender to a week of

zero contact with the outside world. Liberated from SMS, email, facebook, YM and all the other annoying yet indispensable twitterings of a wired life, I’m free to switch off and crack on with the battered novel that has lain idle on my coffee table for the last few months. It’s total bliss. Blue Blue Fin Fin Japanese Fusion and Lounge.
aficionado of all things japanese, the beat’s dan ashcroft took a trip south to check out blue fin restaurant and indulge in a spot of late lunch - fusion style.
098 | beatmag.com
P
art of the ever increasing amount of quality restaurants and eateries that have opened in the re-emerging South Kuta/Tuban area, Blue Fin has tailored it’s concept of ‘semi-fine dining’ to the hordes of visitors to Bali who want to enjoy their dining experiences without too much pomp and ceremony. Although a huge hit with the Russian market, since 2004 Blue Fin has been welcoming all comers to its contemporary, modern-styled restaurant – serving up a blend of Japanese fusion cuisine.
Strolling in through the large glass doors, I leave behind a busy Kuta afternoon and enter a relaxed, calming enclave with plenty of seating options, depending on how sociable you’re feeling. All dark colours and glass panels bathed in blue light, diners can choose from the front lounge room with a view outside onto the street or go for a more intimate setting at one of the tables tucked away behind the wine cellar. A focal point to the restaurant in itself, the stylish glass-walled cellar allows viewing of the large selection of old world, new world, and local wines. I pull up a chair in front of the Sushi preparation counter and have a chinwag with Head Chef Pak Sugi – formerly of Jakarta eatery Akashaka Mas fame. Three years at Blue Fin and he has fleshed out a menu that is as impressive as it is inventive. I advise anyone to arrive early to allow themselves a bit of extra time to go over the huge array of choices on offer, from sushi and sashimi, to soups, mains, sweets and everything in between. A particular speciality at Blue Fin are the Rotabayaki specials - tender skewers of beef, chicken or fish dipped in sauce and barbequed over a char grill. There is also a teppan grill, located in the front area of the restaurant allowing diners to watch their favourite meats getting the teppanyaki treatment. Thankfully my lunchtime treats have been prerecommended by Chef Sugi, so getting lost in the menu is not necessary and instead I have a bit of time to soak up the surroundings before the food arrives. Ignoring the little voice that’s urging me to liberate one of the Merlots from the cellar I go for the sensible option and order up an iced tea. Blue Fin boasts a drinks menu that has every occasion covered from classic cocktails including martinis, shakers and digestifs for after-meal and afterhours fun, to fruity blended juices, refreshers and icy mixes for kids and hungover journos waiting till dark before popping another cork. Signature cocktails include the sushi groove and Blue Fin mojito, and alongside the standard domestic beers, there is a selection of international beers like San Miguel, Corona and, of course, Asahi. Don’t forget to check out the imported range of sake & sochu for a true Japanese experience. My Blue Fin degustation experience kicks of with one of their more popular starters – the crispy prawn salad (35K++). Fresh from Jimbaran, they are battered, deep-fried, bathed in a tangy sauce, and finally scattered atop fresh lettuce leaves. Incredibly morish with a pleasing crispy texture and
zesty dressing, it’s chopsticks at the ready and be prepared to share. Next up comes the interestingly titled ‘orange blossom’ (95K++). A standout offering from the rolls section of the menu, it’s a great twist on a traditional dish involving salmon, cheese, asparagus and orange roe wrapped in nori seaweed with a deep fried crispy crust. Laid on a bed of thinly sliced salad with a mound of nori flakes in the middle it works as a starter to share or as a great addition to a grazing style meal. The final main event is the Wagyu cheese roll (275K++). Three tender slices of prime Australian Wagyu beef are rolled around clutches of long, thin enoki mushrooms and cheese with a light gravy drizzled on top, and accompanied by a shredded side salad. The beef is impossibly tender – even more so than the mushroom stalks – and the sauce perfectly complements the cheese rolled within. My palate fully sated, I pass up the option of dessert (chocolate cake with cashew nut semifreddo anyone?), snap a few shots of the menu on the camera phone in preparation for my definite return visit to Blue Fin, and step back outside into the bustling street. PLAY WITH ME
Linh Tran Trung is a Vietnamese artist. Being born into the war generation, he has many fascinating stories which are transpired in his work. His work is outspoken, vibrant and tends to seem violent in its politics, as he draws on the techniques of pop art and graffiti to convey a modern message about living in the shadow of decaying icons. After his successful exhibition in Bali back in 2001, Linh has returned once again to the island to showcase his latest masterpieces. His latest solo exhibition titled “Play With Me” is a Pop Art showcase, depicting his unique social slant on the world through his mind’s brush.

spa
et amidst a frangipani garden and beautiful swimming pool and adjacent to Tuban Beach in southern Kuta, this resort spa is recommended for its intimate facilities and value for money. Treatments are privately conducted in either a Balinese cottage or an airconditioned spa room. This resort is ideal for couples and mature travelers rather than families with small children, due to the very tranquil and relaxed surroundings. Treatment prices include complimentary use of an outdoor spa Jacuzzi, aromatherapy steam room, swimming pool and sun loungers. Two marble rooms are dedicated to traditional herbal steam rejuvenation and cleansing treatments using a unique system of essential oils induced through steam. Treatments can be taken in one of three private cottages, each with their own secluded outdoor ambience and private little garden, outdoor herbal bath and shower. The cottages have been designed for pairs, couples, relatives, or simply good friends. Healthy food can also be found in the adjoining cafe. Try the Spa Sampler which consists of Lomi–lomi back massage, body scrub, body mask, flower bath, herbal tea & Bali cookies (3 hours – USD$50) or enjoy The Royal Touch, which comprises Balinese aromatherapy massage, refreshing facial, body scrub, body mask, warm herbal bath, herbal tea
and Bali cookies, head and scalp massage, plus a choice of manicure or pedicure (4 hours – USD$70). Both treatments include tangerine juice and a cold face towel upon arrival, aromatic steam treatment (in steam room), interlude cooling–off in the pool, outdoor warm spa Jacuzzi and an aromatherapy footbath. Grab your partner and head down to Green Garden Spa for an intimate and rejuvenating relaxation escape. Green Garden Spa At Green Garden Hotel Jl. Wana Segara (also known as Jl. Dimitri From Paris
Dragonfly Saturday 3 July 10 PM
Sounds Like Lounge, Electronica, House, Downtempo Hails From Istanbul, Turkey.
Has Been ‘Dimitri from Paris’ doesn’t actually mean Dimitri originated from Paris. Born Dimitris Yerasimos in the year 1963 in the city of Istanbul, Turkey, he moved to Paris at an early age. As he was growing up in Paris, funk music and disco from the 70s inspired him and these rhythms are what he combines with electro and hip-hop beats, which he eventually discovered in the 80s. Using a ‘cut and paste’ method to extract certain sounds from disco, he is able to combine these elements into a mix tape feel. Starting his musical career as a radio presenter, in 1996 Dimitri ventured into the realm of producing and released the album ‘Sacrebleu’ under the label Yellow Productions, which combined elements of jazz, film music, samba and house. After successfully completing the project ‘A Night at The Playboy Mansion’, he was immediately picked up by music label Defected, elevating Dimitri From Paris to worldwide acclaim. is Now Come the 3rd of July, Dimitri from Paris will perform at Dragonfly at an event in conjunction with Johnnie Walker. Dimitri is set to share the DJ booth along resident DJs Aay and Joyo.

Has Been Dimitri From Paris tidak berarti Dimitri berasal dari Paris. Setelah berhasil menyelesaikan proyek “A Night at The Playboy Mansion”, dia segera bergabung dengan label Defected, sehingga nama Dimitri From Paris terkenal diseantero dunia. is Now Tanggal 3 Juli mendatang, Dimitri from Paris akan tampil di Dragonfly dalam acara yang bekerja sama dengan Johnnie Walker. Dimitri akan mengisi DJ booth bersama para resident DJ Aay dan Joyo.

Cut Copy
Bengkel Nightpark Saturday 10 July 9 PM
Have Been Cut Copy are a synthpop band hailing from Melbourne, Australia. The term ‘synthpop’ is derived from the new wave rhythms of the 80s. This synthpop/postpunk band began as a side project of DJ Dan Whitford, who is also a working graphic designer. Dan released the single ‘1981’ before he recruited the rest of the members Tim Hoey, Mitchell Scott and Bennet Foddy in 2003 (the band’s current lineup is now minus Foddy). With time, the group’s sound has expanded to feature elements of scuzzy disco, electric rock, and space pop which can all be heard on their latest album ‘Bright Like Neon Love’. Are Now With a huge following in Oz and plenty of international attention, Cut Copy are set to perform live in Jakarta. The event will be presented by Ismaya Live, with opening local talents Agrikulture and Rock n Roll Mafia. Come the 10th of July, Bengkel will be rocking to an array of retro-modern electronic sounds, funk, synth and 80s new wave beats.
