I

ditorial t’s a big year, a big summer coming and here’s an interesting letter....beat bashing has become a popular sport recently. Rock on for the next two weeks, friends.

I don’t get the mentality of DJs as artists and celebrities. I regard and respect the selection and timing of what music to play for an audience of dancers/listeners as much more of a skill or craft than an art. DJs are hardly house-hold names... who in the general population really knows or cares who they are? I know there aren’t many authentic celebs around here, but come on.... We need much more live entertainment like the rare recent pleasure of performers of the calibre of Peaches & Boy George, despite the usual Indonesian-standard organizational and logistic incompetence surrounding the former’s appearance. With many more musically turned-on residents and visitors than Jakarta, why does it attract many more vocal and instrumental artists than Bali?? Its renowned world-class international jazz festival is a prime example. makasih, dr. marv rohrer Ed. Thanks for your comments. The Beat magazine simply reflects what’s going on in town and we don’t push any particular variety of music, it’s just that DJs and electronic music are the most predominant. Celebrities? We aren’t creating celebrity either, just stating the facts. Personally, we would prefer to see more live acts coming through town, but the simple truth is that live bands cost a lot more and are a logistical nightmare with a crew of dozens (for accommodation, food, and transport, plus visas if foreign) and the risks in a town where the majority of visitors are more concerned with being in a crowded venue with a drink in their hand eyeing the talent than seeing a show, makes the exercise even more risky. There have been many interesting artists over the years on Bali including INXS, Deep Purple, Gloria Gainer, Erykah Badu, No FX, and many more. Many people have tried and will continue trying to bring these acts here and we take our collective hats off to them. The risks are immense. Meanwhile, Boy George was DJing the other night in Kuta, Peaches played with backing tracks and Jakarta has approximately 20 million people, which does help get the numbers up. Come into the office to pick up your Beat VIP Card soon, Marv for discounts all over town.

Get ready for a whole new world of entertainment and dining coming to Dyana Pura Street in Seminyak. The popular music and food spot, JP’s Warung Club, is undergoing a huge transformation that will see its current restaurant extend into a much larger live music lounge, playing host to both national and international acts along with Bali’s famous world music act Saharadja who will be on the bill regularly, just as they were when they started out six years ago. French Chef Frederic Pougault will also be on board heading the kitchen (formerly with Gado-Gado, Red Carpet and Sardine). Beyond renovations, the JP’s crew will also be opening a string of new concepts within the same area that will incorporate a funky lounge and bar called ‘Maria Magdalena’ with new wave and old school electro tunes, billiard tables, new gastronomical adventures with a sushi bar operated by Ryoshi, cinema evenings, art and photo exhibitions and plenty more. Keep your ear to the ground and get ready for a high season with plenty of fresh action. JP’s Warung Club, Jl. DhyanaPura Street # 6, Seminyak.

Ku De Ta’s iconic high season parties may already have a reputation for being of grand proportions, but this year looks set to blow everything else out of the water thanks to a tenth anniversary line up of events that is bound to keep us all on a summer high. This year’s ‘I’m An Angel’ charity gala dinner on July 31st is set to be another huge night of entertainment and amazing dining with Ash Chandler flying in from Bombay to perform while chef Phillip Davenport serves up his award winning flavours. From there it’s into the August madness where Frankie Knuckles and Heather Small (M People) will be gripping the crowd with house tunes at the Day Party where all things ‘bikini like’ are expected to be flaunted in style. For a birthday crescendo the Brand New Heavies will be hitting Ku De Ta for a once-only show so do not miss that on the 14th and prepare to dive into the rabbit hole as the theme on show will be ‘Alice in Wonderland’. Then of course comes White Party time on the 21st and this year will see a Cleopatra Queen of the Nile theme turning the beachside venue into an Egyptian playground. Dave Seaman will be gracing the decks so prepare to get lost in his legendary sounds. To see out the month will be acclaimed world music band Tijuana Cartel, back from Oz with their Flamenco, Reggae and Hip Hop infused sets. For more info on any of the events call 736 969 or check their website, www.kudeta.net.

Interested in seeing Saul Hudson in concert? Didn’t think so. How about if we go by his stage name, Slash. Yep. The legend guitarist of Guns n Roses fame is set to perform at Istora Senayan, Jakarta on the 3rd of August where he’ll be accompanied by band members Myles Kennedy, Bobby Schneck, Brent Fitz and others. Slash recently released a self titled album that guest stars a list of well known artists including Fergie, Ozzie Osbourne and the original ‘Appetite for Destruction’ band line up bar Axle Rose. Pre-sale tickets are available up until the 2nd of August from 350K (tribune II) to 950K (VIP) available online at www.rajakarcis.com. On the spot ticket prices will range from 400K to 1000K so order your tickets early before you miss out. For more information go to www.mahakaentertainment.com or deathrockstar.info.

Local Bali band ‘Rude Devils’ have just tied off their latest album and it’s ready to hit the shelves. Titled ‘Elephant Years’, the album will be released under the new independent label Revolusi Music Indonesia. This is the band’s second album release after their first EP turned full self titled album was put out in 1999. Formerly known as ‘Joker’ in the early 90s, the band had a few line-up changes and in ’96 the Rude Devils were born. You could say there have been a few drinks between recording sessions, or perhaps a few hundred, but the band believe they are now as solid as ever and members Totox (vocals and guitar), Ole (bass), Yudha (lead guitar) and Teguh (drums) are amped about the new sounds. Keep up with the score at www.myspace. com/rudedevils or look for the album at Reform Posse, Dynamite, Ashes Tattoo and Cibola.

5

Keep your ears to the ground for some new sounds on the jazz scene. Indonesia’s answer to Miles Davis, Rio Sidik has been taking his writing and performance skills to the studio lately, laying down tracks with his regular players in preparation for an upcoming album release. Rio has also just headed off to the UK for a spell of shows with some other amazing players over the next couple of months, so expect to hear more about those recording sessions when he gets back. If you’ve ever been to Ryoshi on a Monday night or SOS Saturdays you’ll want to get your hands on a copy of whatever these cats lay down…

Her passion for music led her to move to Amsterdam where she dubbed herself ‘Miss Nine’, and began pursuing a career in the electronic industry. She became resident DJ at the Motion parties, where she evolved as an artist, getting the chance to play alongside masters such as John Digweed, Dave Seaman and Nick Warren. In ‘03 she began touring abroad and by ‘05 she was offered by DJ duo Deep Dish to join Bullitt Bookings, allowing her name to explode onto the DJ Scene. She got the chance to mix a compilation for Yoshitoshi Recordings in ‘06, which was rated high on the iTunes Dance Chart, and in ‘08 she released an album on the Armada label entitled ‘Dancefloor Sessions’. Dino Sabatini I

talian born DJ Dino Sabatini initially became world renowned for his work with Gianluca Meloni under the Modern Heads title. As sound designers, producers and live performers they built a solid reputation across the globe, before Dino began to further push himself as a reputable DJ in his own right. themic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. on How did you and Gianluca Meloni first meet?

The best thing to happen to you in the last year?

I met Gianluca in a recording studio in Rome about twelve years ago. At that time I was working on some electro / pop projects. From our first meeting we realized that there was a great synergy between us and a great understanding of music.

I started to understand the German language.

At which point did you realize that you would stick together as a duo?

Your favorite toy? Space Invaders!

We started as a duo but after some years I decided to move to Berlin as life for a musician in Italy is not easy and if you work with techno music it is even more difficult. Berlin is very cheap and techno culture has been rooted in this city for years. Finding myself alone I began to develop my own solo project.

What do you miss the most when you’re away from home?

How does one of your solo sets differ from a performance with Modern Heads?

The football match, Italy vs Slovakia…..

The difference is that Modern Heads as a duo play completely live with a great interaction of different machines (synths, drum machines, etc), this is a real live set. Solo, I like to mix as a DJ and sometimes use the addition of analogue machines. Are we going to hear more from Modern Heads in the future or will there be an increase in your solo work?

Any producers that have impressed you lately? Alex Bau, Xhin and Byetone.

My family & my studio. What do you love to leave behind?

Impressions of Bali? I believe it to be amazing, but so far I have not yet been to Bali. Last words? See you soon people of Bali!

Of course, you will hear more of Modern Heads. We are working these days on a Remix for Perc (PercTrax) and we are also working on a new EP for Stroboscopic Artefacts that will be released in early September. What have been some of your most memorable moments as a touring DJ? The first time that we played at Panorama Bar (Berlin). The people were ripping off their clothes and Omar S behind us continued to ask how we were playing a set of three hours without a laptop. The club called us back after just two months for another gig. Another moment was playing solo as Dino Sabatini last February at Berghain, at the end of my set people told me “your music is different.” This was a great feeling of satisfaction for me.

Ray D’Sky S

inger, guitarist and songwriter Aray, a long time player for many acts such as the well known

Steve and the Coconuttreez, has pulled together a crew of talented friends to express his own music under the name Ray D’Sky. Swinging through a mix of folk, reggae, blues and rock and roll, they’re in town now to give Bali a taste of their live energy. The Beat got Aray on the mic… How long have you been together as a band? The band was formed sometime near the end of 2006, so you can say we’ve been strumming together for almost 4 years.

listening tracks and organic music in the line of Folk and Folk Reggae. I want people to drown their spirits in my music and forget about all their troubles. I want everybody to find a new energy through my music.

How did the band from? At first, I was meaning to start my solo career, but realizing that creating songs and producing an album was not a one man job, I sought help from my musician friends I worked for to release this album. From there, Ray D ‘Sky was born.

Where have you toured so far? Well, apart from some places in Indonesia, we were lucky enough to be invited to play in Brunei. We don’t know how they were able to hear about us, but all I can say is thanks to the Internet, the world is slowly recognizing us.

Do any of you have other commitments that make it hard to maintain a central focus on the band? As the forming of the band was my own intention, I find that I’m the one keeping the ship in shape. Because all involved in this project are my close friends, I find it easy as they are all willing to help.

Where have you enjoyed playing the most and why? All gigs are memorable to us, but the best in my opinion is when we have to play on a distant island somewhere, when the road to get there is something of a journey in itself. Another plus is when we get there, as the crowd is always enthusiastic to receive our music.

What are the most difficult things you face together as a band? One major hurdle I’ve come to find is in promoting the album. With no professional help from major record labels and releasing the album independently, I haven’t received the amount of promotional aid I got when I was with Steven and the Coconuttreez. But thanks to all my friends, colleagues and people who have come to know me, things have gone better than I expected. Is there a theme to your music, a message you are hoping to get across to those that will listen? Through my music I just want everybody to enjoy themselves. By creating a good atmosphere of easy

Black Legend T

DEJA’VU FRI 16 JULY 10PM

he Beat gets some air time with a man who’s been serving up electronic

treats to the hungry masses for over 20 years. J Reverse aka Black legend has been witness to plenty of changes over the years and with numerous remixes, world tours and international hits under his belt, his opinion is one that counts…

With over 20 years of experience of spinning and track production, there must have been some major learning curves along the way for you. Any particular moments that stand out as marking your success or changing your direction over the years? I’d say that for the first decade of my career, when turning points in the club music scene were so well noticeable, each change was a new challenge for me - being called to be an active part of this or that scene. Of course the Black Legend success in 2000 was like an earthquake in my life not only for my career, but since then the club music scene has started turning into a whole new business where the advent of the Internet has contributed to creating a club music melting pot, a sort of globalization of sound. This has allowed me to finally feel totally free to take every direction I want, anytime I want. Finally; real freedom of expression. Gaining popularity as a DJ can often take its toll on one’s health thanks to the lifestyle that comes with it. Any major lessons you’ve had to learn on that front? Of course we all know we are not living the healthiest life possible, personally I’ve learnt to listen to my body. One thing I’ve learned is that it doesn’t matter if you are a clubber, a DJ or a carpenter, cigarettes will kill you more than everything else, so I quit four years ago. When would you say there have been noticeable shifts in worldwide trends and the direction of dance music over the years?

050 | beatmag.com

Definitely across 2002 and 2003 the Internet totally transformed the world of clubbing and everything in connection to it, giving dance music many new directions, very good ones as well as very bad ones. Do you think the digital era has been a blessing, a curse, or simply another gateway for contemporary expression? In my opinion, the digital revolution, like every real revolution, put dangerous weapons in dangerous hands. I’d say that for the first two or three years there was a good balance between the good and the bad use of the opportunities given by this new way of distributing content and connecting people. I’m now sorry to see how the whole digital dance music market is in the hands of only two parties, on one side is the dominating “legal” online retailers acting like major labels used to do, while on the other side, a jungle of “tolerated by retailers” pirates earning money from free downloads they post around. I have to admit I’m very upset about the actual direction the digital world is taking; online retailers making a business out of labels and DJ promotion, charts totally faked by labels and producers buying their own releases, good production being illegally downloaded thousands of times while only selling 10 in a legal shop. Of course we still have a crossover, dance music side of the business that seems to respect the rules enough, but the underground scene is abandoned in total anarchy. Yes, I’m a bit pessimistic about the direction it’s all going right now, I hope something will change soon, and I’m trying to

mic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onth give my little contribution for what is possible. How did you first become involved in the production side of music? Was there already prior knowledge of musical composition or did you learn as you plugged away? Since I was a teenager I have become aware of my double personality, a kind of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. I was a total electronics, computer, and DIY ‘in general geek’ by day, but a complete party animal at night. About 25 years ago when I started to hear about discos and all the technology involved with that world, things were too expensive for me to buy so the geek in me one day said “hey you have an electronics diploma, build it all yourself”. I then started building my first DJ mixer, my mobile disco setup to rent at parties, then my first sampler and my first, second, third and fourth studio, from the ground up, walls, floor, cables, lights. Did I learn as I plugged away? I’m still plugging in devices… How much of your time does your label ‘Reverse Records’ take up for you? I try to dedicate about two days a week for the actual main label activities like promotion, licensing, catalogue exploitation etc, but email is always there, tempting me with new music coming in, news about sales performance, and feedback on releases which keeps me on it constantly. You’ve got a list of releases to rival anyone on the international circuit; are there any particular tracks from over the years that hold deeper significance or sentimental value for you? I’ve walked this way taking little and slow steps, some of these steps made some more noise than others, but every single one is significant to me. To mention a few of them, I can name my remix “Kickin’ In The Beat”. Also being a 23 year old guy and remixing a Todd Terry production for the legendary NYC based label Cutting Records was a dream to me, a dream that lead me to remix “Shimmy Shake” by 740 Boyz, delivering them a two million copy worldwide hit. Yes that’s when I was really convinced that it could become my job for life. Under the title Black Legend you’ve now hit the ten year mark; how would you compare your current sound with that of Black Legend’s initial birth? At the present I’d just say it’s pretty far apart. The first years right after Black Legend’s big success I was being heavily pushed by the entire dance music business to produce that same sound over and over. The concept

was working well for their business but actually killing my creativity. I’ve since decided to go back to producing with the same spirit I had before Black Legend. If you could say three things to the J-Reverse of 20 years ago what would they be? 1- You can’t trust every person you meet on your way; 2- Get a manager, you can’t have control of everything yourself; 3- Eat less and work out more! Any particular vision of yourself in ten years from now? I won’t say with gray hair because my head’s already lost its hair! Seriously though, my vision for the future is simply to be able to mix today’s experience with my youthful ambitions. What about daddies on the scene that you still look up to yourself; who do you still take inspiration from these days? DJ Pierre in first place! He keeps teaching me how it’s possible to keep loving the essence of what we love doing, away from the fashion glittered side of the club scene. It doesn’t matter if you like techno, progressive or whatever you want to call it, do it because you feel it not because it’s cool. What sort of a set can we expect to hear at Deja’vu? Well, I’m always uncomfortable categorizing, but… a blend of electro and tech sounds with a light topping of mother land black soul. If your body rhythmically shakes as an involuntary consequence due to the state of your soul induced by the music your brain and body are feeling together, and you realize you are not the only one feeling like that, then welcome to the Mother Land Black Soul tribal ritual! Any major action we can watch out for over the rest of 2010? New remixes re-released of “You See The Trouble With Me” to celebrate the 10th anniversary. I’ve just finished two new productions that I’ll be testing out at gigs for a month from now before I decide a future for them, one of the two has a very good potential to be a new Black Legend single. J Reverse will play at Deja’vu’s Seventh Anniversary Party under his world renowned Black Legend title on Saturday, July 17th, so get down there and get yourself into his groove…

Have Been It can be said that one of the most influential bands of the last millennia would have to be The Beatles. Some may argue about that point, but for Awan Garnida (bass), Wawan (lead guitar), Adnan Sigit (guitar) and Beni Pratama (drums), this legendary band has affected them enough to form a Beatles tribute band. Calling themselves G-Pluck, a mixed spelling of the Indonesian term for ‘copy’, these guys have been jamming Beatles hits out since 2000. The band regularly perform at the annual “Beatles Week Festival” held in the birth place of the Beatles at the Cavern Pub, Mathew Street, Liverpool, England and have gained much praise from the British crowd for their renditions of many classic Beatles hits. Apart from Beatles songs, the band members also try to play the part by dressing as close as possible to their idols. Keeping true to their fanboyisme, the band have no intention of writing any of their own songs, and just wish to continue playing Beatles hits for the fans. are Now If The Beatles still rate as one of your master favorites, then don’t miss the chance to hear them live. This will be as close to the real thing as you could ever expect to see in Bali in the 21st century!

Retribution!

W

hile some choose to chill out in the tropics and let their bodies unwind, others have found the perfect portal to unleash their inner demons thanks to the Bali Brawl, a Mixed Martial Arts night of cage fighting pulled together by Travis Wagner. Staged and caged at Mirah Silver Boxing, the second round of this intense battle of skill and strength took place last Friday and went down with plenty of blood and bruises. Just the way we like it. Highlights of the night were female fighters Fatiha Dib from Algeria, an ex-kickboxing champ, in the cage with Erin Nota from Perth who trains in Muay Thai and Burmese Kickboxing. It was a sweet succession of rabid beatings between the two, though Erin held the most control before taking Fatiha out in the third round thanks to a rear naked choke. Bilal Santoso and Noko Aji from Indonesia pushed each other right through to the end of the fifth round, causing the judges to step in with a decision to award Noko the winning position at 49 to 47. Bringing the crowd some joy with a technical knockout was Kendall Verspoor from Holland who took down American Patrick Bird by their third round. The Referee called it done and dusted when Bird could no longer hold himself up on a leg that looked more like frostbite on a corpse after Kendall’s consistent attacks. The next round of the Bali Brawl will be taking place on August the 6th, again at Mirah Silver Boxing at 81 Majapahit in Kuta. Harden up, desensitize yourself to brutality and then book a seat.

Modern Life is Rubbish Plastic Beach Blur Gorillaz V

ery much a product of it’s time, the second full studio album offering from the thinking man’s band of the Britpop era celebrated Britishness in the nineties, and laid bare the often dull reality of middle class English life. Regurgitating the attitude and melodies of such previous British luminaries as The Kinks, The Faces and David Bowie, Damon Albarn & co explore a dreary landscape, set against the perils of British modernisation and a growing fast food, throwaway culture. ‘For Tomorrow’ kicks off with a call to arms and a visit to Primrose Hill with a dejected view over central London, while ‘Sunday Sunday’ methodically ticks off the quintessential English weekend rituals of; Sunday papers, roast lunch, dozing in front of the tele, a walk in the park, old soldiers, a brass band cameo and Songs of Praise. Never as popular or as chart-friendly as subsequent albums ‘Parklife’ or ‘The Great Escape’, ‘Modern Life is Rubbish’ is still essential listening and an indispensable document of the state of the union at the end of a century. Dan Ashcroft

T

aking the concept of rubbish far more literally, Plastic Beach confirms what 2005’s Demon Days was hinting at; global meltdown and our natural environment swamped by trash. Albarn’s nightmarish cartoon creations collaborate with an all-star cast of co-conspirators such as Mos Def, Mark E. Smith, Snoop Dogg, Bobby Womak, Gruff Rhys, and the ever-impressive De La Soul to produce a sprawling, daring, innovative, surprising, muddled and magnificent album. ‘Plastic Beach’ lurches from 80s electro synth pop to contemporary British hip-hop (courtesy of up-and-coming Bashy and Kano) and back again with plenty of casio-style blips and loops and a few orchestral maneuvers in the dark. It shouldn’t work, and it’s not quite as cohesive as Demon Days, yet Albarn manages to pull it all together while still dishing out a couple of standout solo tracks; the brilliant ‘Rhinestone Eyes’, and atmospheric ‘Empire Ants’. It’s a long way from his Blur days, and shows that this man is simply a walking creative god. Damon, we salute you! Dan Ashcroft

feature Does your father’s success as a dancer, artist, author and educator (I Made Bandem) put pressure on you, or is it a huge motivation instead? Both at the same time. I find the proximity pleasing and it gives me that added confidence, not forgetting that access to the art scene I have. On top of that, my surrounding contemporaries spurred me on to do anything as good in such a milieu. As I matured, I embraced music and I’ve believed in it ever since. Do you have a good relationship and support from your father? The relationship could aptly be summed up by this: Once he went on a road trip from Worcester to New York, queued in line for a newly released M-audio midi controller, and flew from stateside carrying it cabin side to Bali just to give it to me! You’re involved in a stack of activities; how do you keep your equilibrium steady? Actually, I keep it real by doing many things. It gives me the edge. You know, the more complicated and tense it becomes, the more creative I can be. I live for the extremes. How do you cook it all up into your own art form? These stomping grounds are my muse, thus my art serves the muse. Say the muse is this outof-the-blue girl, then I’ll faithfully cater to her needs. If a political struggle becomes the muse, I’ll endure it all the way. If the muse is nothing, I’ll make something out of it. I’m like a chef, I’ll combine and heat the ingredients and make them work depending on who’s here for the feast. Your graphic designs, what stories do they tell? DigiArts are my designs against tyranny, my socalled perspectives on living life as a burden on the good Mother Earth. They’re simply an intimate medium where I share the beauty I have witnessed, the exuberance I have felt, and the anxiety I have suffered. A poet I am not, but my images convey 1001 stories. How would you describe your sound as a DJ? At heart I strive to be a cross-breed between Chris Gray’s deepness and Hawtin’s flair. I’m a show rather than focusing on what’s in and out in terms of sound. I mix the deeper side of techno, deploying plenty of loops, samples and acapella. I like it when the VJ accentuates my minimalistic techy sounds.

078 | beatmag.com

Name three of your favorite songs in your playlist and tell us why you chose them... I’ll rattle and shake in all the right places by cutting up ‘Everything is Borrowed’ by Jin Choi, then ‘A Walk in the Dunes’ (Alexi Delano Mix) by Terry Toner and then I’ll work the starry night by setting ‘Other People’ (Original Mix) by Adultnapper on rotation. You seem to avoid the limelight in DJing, playing at community events instead - what’s the mission? My spouse won’t allow me to play in clubs anymore (laughing). Too many occupational hazards, I suppose. Seriously though, a club is the place for me to wind up. Plus, playing clandestinely in communal settings does yield its own surprises. Where do you focus most of your attention as far as a money earning career goes? Money comes and goes, I never worry about monetizing. I manage the long hours of work and let my spouse take care of the intricacies of daily monetary affairs. Have you reached a point where your creativity and career are balanced or are you still aiming to get there? Let’s say I’m yet to reach nirvana, but I surely have had many glimpses of it. My creative career balance is having MYOB Account Edge accounting software and Ableton Live 7 side by side on my office desktop. ITunes always runs in the background. Could you define Marlowe Bandem’s five main personal interests or pursuits in life… Five? I only pursue three myself; thrills (but not in the context of extreme sports), sounds and images close to my heart, and most definitely warm conversations over cold beers. Any rituals for inspiration? Again, cold beers and tuning the dial to 98.5 FM The Beat Radio Plus. Every day. Any words to inspire new artists / musicians? Do it like you mean it.

Listen to The Beat Radio Plus 98.5 FM on Tuesdays 4 - 5pm and Thursdays from 6 - 7pm to hear Marlowes ‘Deeper Shades of Wax’ tech house show. Also head to www.marlowebandem.com for a closer look at his music, graphics and more...

Behind

food

the menu With Liannata Halim at Tobelo’s Cafe From: Denpasar, Bali. Specialties: Steak and fish! For fish there are a variety of combinations I like to try. And for steak, I like to explore different sauce ideas.

Kitchen Motto: Keep up the creativity, always be open to learning and always create a great taste! Style: Mainly Western food, but Asian ( Chinese and Indonesian) is also on the agenda.

Background : I majored in FB Production Management (D3) and then hit the workforce at the Singapore Shangrila Hotel for a year in 2003, followed by a move to London where I also worked for a year in a restaurant there. Then it was back to Bali working for Baker’s Corner as a cook and for Stadium Café as Chef De Partie (2005 - 2008). From there I worked as a chef in the cafe at Pepito supermarket before moving to Tobelo Café when it opened this year.

Warung Agung Kayu Putih

long the way to Canggu via Batu Belig, there is a small path running off the road that leads you to a perfect little sunset spot by the ocean. Open since 2005 and with indoor and outdoor seating, both Western and Indonesian food can be savoured along with a variety of drinks including beer and spirits. With a small stream separating the warung from the beach, a cute little swing bridge will carry you onto the sand if you feel like a closer peek at the sun setting over the water. Open from 10am to 10pm, this is an ideal spot for a private drink between lovers or a place to clear the head while on your own. Jl. Pura Kayu Putih –

The World is My Stage

CONCEPTual Basics

Satrio Welang’s performances are mainly social critiques, focusing on the women’s movement as well as cultural issues. Many of his performances concentrate on violence towards women, particularly Balinese women, which he believes culture and social habits are responsible for. “Balinese women, like all women, need their space to take a breath,” he says. Satrio also works on literature, poetry and prose, which centre on woman’s struggle and humanity.

PERFORMANCES

Joining a theatre road show around Java was Satrio’s first step onto the stage when he starred in ‘Caligula’ written by Albert Camus (Teater Orok, 2003). This was followed closely by Arthur Miller’s ‘The Death of A Salesman’ (Kelompok 108, 2004) in Panggung Teater Realis Indonesia - DKJ,
