f anybody hasn’t noticed, Bali is kinda busy. More busy than anytime I can remember. There’s more development, more tourists, more traffic, more mayhem, more booty, more goof, more openings, more parties, more and more and more of everything… and phffew, hold onto your hats, it’s about to get busier. The High-Season is now officially in full swing and especially this year with Ramadhan fast approaching, the squeeze is on to get as much out of it before the sobering fasting month arrives on August 11. In this week’s beat you’ll find all the summer-time party action and loads more. Meanwhile...While in Bali, please respect your neighbours, the Balinese and yourself - drink and party in moderation and have a good time while you are at it. Ed
The Beat Magazine is Bali and Jakarta’s entertainment gig-guide. Pick it up free at the airport, bars, restaurants, clubs, hotels and Circle K in Bali. We are an independent publication and our aim is to entertain and guide you thru the nightlife and more of Bali and Jakarta.
Comments from our VIP Card Members
The Beat is awesome man. I always check it out online before my next trip to Bali so I know what’s going on while I’m in town. I usually look for big parties in your listings like I went and saw Ferry Corsten in April and I saw Tiesto at Double Six a couple of years back now. I work for a travel magazine based in Perth and I’m consistently doing stories on Bali. So when I know I’m going, I check the beat and once work is over... I hit the parties! Chris (Perth) Mate, we should hook up and party some.. Hello, what I like in your magazine is to be informed per day of each event but I’m not sure I am the target of your mag, I’ m with 2 little kids. Anyway, when we want to go out, it’s easy for us to find the different events. Thanks. Yvette (France) TB is very family friendly and since just about everything is covered that goes on this town inside, it’s made for everyone..btw, I’ve got 2 kids too, aduhhh. Your magazine offers some great information that is up-todate and it also includes the new and trendy places to visit. The discounts are a great idea for tourists and you include some good articles and ads for restaurants and bars etc. Perhaps you could give more info in the magazine about the discount card to make it easier and quicker to access. Regards, Marita (Australia) We run a regular page on the VIP Card offers in the restaurants and there is a full list of what each establishment offers VIP Card members on one of the pages inside. I hope you enjoy your VIP card, and btw, soon we will be placing identification in each place...to make things a little clearer! Please send contributions, letters, etc to editor@beatmag.com The opinions expressed in any article or advertisement are those of the writer or advertiser and not necessarily those of the Beat. The Beat crew takes no responsiblity for anyone caught out in the photos.

Bali’s annual house music festival has once again returned to enthrall the abundant hordes of househeads found on this beat infused island. After five successful years of pulling off great shows featuring some great lineups of local and international DJs, this years three day traveling event is set to start on the 30th of June and end on the 1st of August. The first day party will be held at Anantara, followed by Oceans 27 on the second day and concluding at Hu’u for ‘Defected in the House’ by the Junction. For more information of the lineup of DJs coming to Bali visit www.thejunctionbali.com. Don’t call yourself a househead if you miss this monster bash!
The 32nd Bali Kite Festival The Bali Kite Festival is an annual international kite festival held in July around the Padang Galak and Sanur Beach area. This year the event will be held between the 23rd to the 25th of July, and like years before will feature massive traditional kites reaching sizes of up to 4 meters wide and 10 meters long in the shapes of fishes, birds and leaves - all handmade by the many banjars from all over Bali. The event has its origins as a seasonal religious festival intended to send a message to the Hindu Gods for abundant crops and harvests. As time has progressed, the traditional kite flying has grown into a competition of sorts with each type of traditional kite having its own competition, and heats of 10 teams vying for the best launch and longest flight. A competition is also held for ‘new creation’ kites, which may include detailed three-dimensional figures representing Hindu Gods, and sponsored kites. For more information on the event visit the website www.balikitefestival.com.

Think you’re the only one trying to look better for the August high season? Think again. Several clubs around town are getting a face-lift. If you’ve passed through Kuta lately you may have noticed that the front of Hard Rock Café has some construction going on. Before the end of July the live music venue will be sporting a new exterior look with a new balcony lounge overlooking the beach. Another club that recently completed its makeover is the Bounty over on Legian street. The venue has now stretched onto the sidewalk making it more visible for clubbers passing by. A couple of the major changes at Bounty include a revamp of the interior lighting and DJ booth. The remodeled dance floor is slightly raised to form a kind of stage, which is sure to attract more clubbers who like to show off their moves.
theSCOOP Sanur Village Festival 2010
4
After four consecutive successful celebrations, the Sanur Village Festival will be returning for the fifth year from the 4th to the 8th of August, taking place at Segara Ayu Beach and Inna Grand Bali Beach Sanur. This year’s theme for the festival will be ‘Saha Nuhur’ - literally meaning ‘the passion to visit a certain place’ - which later evolved into the modern name; Sanur. The popularity of this event has previously attracted many visitors to Bali, and this year is set to be bigger and merrier than ever, ensuring people will have an absolute blast at this year’s event. With a great lineup of performances set to hit the stage and a range of events from cooking competitions, a bazaar and many other attractions, be sure not to miss this year’s Sanur Village Festival. For more information on the event visit www.gotosanur.com or email info@gotosanur.com

New Addition to the Family Bali Safari & Marine Park welcomed the birth of a bouncing baby hippopotamus, born at the facility on the 18th of May. The cute new family member is noted as the first hippo to ever be born in Bali. The new addition to Bali Safari & Marine Park’s large collection of animals already weighs in at a hefty 40 kilograms. According to the keepers, the mother lost her appetite a few days prior to delivering her baby, choosing to await the time to give birth standing in a water pool within the hippo enclosure. Delivery, when it occurred, was underwater unseen to prying eyes. Curators of the park have yet to name the youngster, but visitors and well-wishers are welcome to leave any suggestions for christening the hippo. photos from last year’s high season
Take Me Higher If you haven’t already felt that warm rush up the back of your neck that says, “Here we go again!” then you’ll have at least noticed the massive pilgrimage of tourists that have hit the streets, ready to grab summer by the horns. The venues across the island have prepared for a whopper this time, once again bidding to outdo the previous year. This year’s events have kicked off a little earlier due to Ramadhan taking place from the 11th for a month. The Junction is back in town starting on Thursday 29th July at SOS before moving along to Oceans 27, Hu’u Bar and another secret location yet to be announced but can be followed on twitter, The Rock Bar is throwing a party for reaching its 1st birthday with a phenomenal amount of success, Ku De Ta’s usual impressive party list has reached greater heights this year with I’m an Angel on the July 31st, followed by the Day Party, the tenth Birthday Party with The Brand New Heavies and the classic White Party over the following weekends, all with major performers from around the globe. Have no doubt that the Independence Merdeka Day weekend around the 17th will be a monster so prepare to park a long way away from Double Six (Famous party and others) and make your way into the thick of the action by foot, bike or taxi. Everywhere from Tuban to Kerobokan will be pumping and everyone will be pushing the weekend into a week long affair. Play safe. Go mad. Be nice. Have a blast… More details in this and the next edition of the The Beat magazine.

Futeki Double Six sat 24 July 11PM
Sounds Like House and techno Hails From Gothenburg, Västra Götalands län, Sweden
Has Been The name Futeki might have a hint of Japanese about it, but is in fact the alias for Henrik Svensson, a Swedish DJ who began mixing records in 2004. His passion for electronic music is rooted back in the days of listening to the Prodigy and Sasha & Digweed mix CDs. 2005 saw his first live gig, and to date, Futeki has paid his dues behind the decks in various clubs around Sweden, Germany and Denmark. In 2008 he was picked as one of the winners in Arvikafestivalens and WESC’s DJ competition, winning a gig to perform in front of 15000 clubbers in Arvika. Not to outdo himself, in 2007, he and two DJ friends launched the house/techno club Lokita, which has been successful in bringing in a host of top international DJs, resulting in a nomination for best club of 2008 at the Scandinavian Music Convention. Is Now With the desire to spread his wings and gain more international recognition, Futeki will be heading to Bali to perform at Double Six Club on the 24th of July. Get down there for a taste of one of the best DJs Scandinavia has to offer.
caged baby klapa sun 25 July 6PM
Sounds Like Tough techno, sexy nu-techno Hails From Bordeaux, France & Brighton, UK
Has Been Dividing his time between his studio in France and the clubs of England’s South Coast, Thomas Gandey AKA Caged Baby has been gaining more and more critical acclaim and international respect as a DJ, as well as collaborating with the cream of the international DJ crop. Having received the thumbs up from legends like Sascha, Pete Tong and Radioslave, Gandey has given his unique treatment to tracks from The Editors, The Temper Trap, Grace Jones and Alphabeat, as well as working on solo album ‘Will See You Now’ and a Fat Boy Slim collaboration ‘Fried and Tested’ under Southern Fried Records. A classically trained pianist and self confessed analogue synth head Gandey’s wide musical influence shows in his unique productions, as varied as they are unique. Is Now Currently holed up in his Bordeaux studio working on new material, Gandey is taking a working vacation to Bali in time for the high season madness with a set at Klapa.

HOOBASTANK Hard Rock cafe Tues 27 july 9 pm
Currently cruising the globe playing a series of shows, Hoobastank are about to grace to our shores once again. With a stack more grunt planned than last year’s acoustic set and a new bass player to show off, the boys are set to pack a punch down at Hard Rock Café. The Beat stepped up for some time on the mic with vocalist Douglas Robb… What would you say are some of the biggest lessons you’ve learned about the reality of being a touring rock band that may not have crossed your mind when you were jamming it out for your first few gigs? It definitely isn’t as glamorous as it may seem from the fan’s perspective. It is a lot of hard work and it is a lot of time spent away from your friends and family. That being said, I wouldn’t want to do anything else. Seeing the world and meeting so many amazing people has made me grow as a person more than I could have ever foreseen.
046 | beatmag.com
As your success has continued to grow and continued to push you onto the road for longer periods of time, have any of you struggled with being away from home or the difficulties that are faced due to distance between partners and loved ones? It has always caused some difficulty and strain on relationships. You have to find the right person who can handle you being away for so long. Over the years though we have been very good about bringing out our loved ones on tour frequently. That always makes the two of you feel better and it’s fun to travel the world together.

nthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. o ‘The Reason’ obviously brought about a huge wave of popularity for you guys that widened your audience the world over. Since its release there hasn’t been a single to match it as far as sales charts go, though as Markku has said in the past, this is never a true reflection of appreciation, especially compared to live shows. Have you found that on the live front the core fan base has continued to grow from city to city, country to country? In some cases yes and in others no. Our fanbase has continued to grow in some countries such as Japan, Korea and other Asian countries while at the same time in some places such as the U.S. and Europe we’ve seen a decline. Europe is probably due to the fact that we haven’t been back there in a long time. As for the states, the fans here are always looking for the “latest thing”. That being said, our core fans who were there before The Reason are still there and they are some of the most passionate fans ever. Where in the world have you been most surprised by fan appreciation? I’m always most surprised with our fans in Asia and Southeast Asia. They are SO passionate about music and about our band. They shower us with gifts. They show up at the airports and hotels. It’s quite humbling. It’s something I never dreamed would happen to us but it’s amazing. Which bands have you crossed paths with over the years that have struck a chord with all of you? Anyone in particular that you do your best to catch up with as often as possible? There are so many that it’s hard to keep track of but some of my favorite bands ever to tour with are the ones that we were just friends with in the first place. Bands like Incubus, Linkin Park and Lost Prophets. On a production level, who has offered the most insight and advice into your songwriting and recording process over the years in regards to forging your sound? It’s more of a process of trial and error with us. We write and write and then see what works. Our producers over the last 15 years have had an influence on us of course. Jim Wirt and Howard Benson. Was there a point where you all needed time out to find renewed energy and passion in working together?
048 | beatmag.com
I think for most bands, including ours, it’s a constant fight for momentum. After touring for Every Man for Himself we definitely needed some time to relax even if it meant going “off the radar”. Unfortunately, in this business if you want to succeed then you don’t have much time to relax. For most relationships between two people, going travelling together can be a true decider as to whether the love will last; have you guys had any harsh lessons in learning to respect each other’s boundaries or do you generally just sort stuff out over a Chinese burn session on the tour bus? We’ve had our share of arguments and differences over the years for sure. We’ve become a lot better at communicating with each other though. We know each other almost better than we know ourselves. The best way for us is always to be honest and talk it out. We are all best of friends outside of the band and we use that friendship to work through problems. What have you been most excited about lately as a band? I’ve been the most excited about writing new music and writing it as a 4-piece band again. For the last two albums we wrote as a 3 piece and had a studio session bass player come in and record the bass parts. Then we’d have a touring bass player travel with us and play the parts. Now that Jesse Charland is an official member of Hoobastank we’ve been writing and demoing songs as a “full band” again. It feels great! Individually, what are some of the most exciting things to be happening in your lives this year? Well, for me it’s the upcoming birth of my first child. My wife is due in late September. It’s a girl. We are both extremely excited. Did you manage to soak up much of what Bali has to offer on your last trip here? Impressions? Our last trip to Bali was so fast that we didn’t have a chance to soak anything up. This time around we will have a day to relax before the show so I’m looking forward to just relaxing on the beach. Maybe try my hand at surfing? I’d love to go see some wild monkeys again. Back in 2002-2003 we had the chance to spend a few days in Bali and it was a great time. [That show was also at Hard Rock but on the Sand Island stage in the hotel.]

Fischerspooner Not your average button pushers…
As opposed to spinning other people’s tracks and rising to fame behind a CDJ play button, Warren Fischer and Casey Spooner have gained attention for their unique fusion of original music, choreography, fashion, film and photography. From art galleries to concert halls, television to radio, these lads have been squeezing their passion into the minds of many and now they’re on the way to Bali to give us a taste of their sounds…
Hu’u wednesday 28 JULY 10PM How, where, and when did the two of you meet? Warren and I met in a video art class at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. We were both very outspoken and had similar disdain for the rest of the students and their ideas. After that though, we moved in very different directions. He became a film director for TV commercials and I became an actor in an experimental theater group. We reconnected many years later in NYC and started working on a film project. Out of that we stumbled upon a song idea that turned into a performance. It was from this kernel that we continued to build our pop/punk/ art fantasy. We weren’t interested in the music world and we have never considered ourselves a band. It has always been a very flexible project about entertainment and art. Initially we only worked in the gallery system and we had no intentions of participating in the music business.
050 | beatmag.com
And these days? How would you define your direction? We just make what we like. We work very hard to satisfy our own ears and eyes. When you love what you make it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. I like to live and work from this place of strength. Any personal favourites from your latest album release ‘Entertainment’? That’s difficult and it changes all the time. I love ‘In A Modern World’, I love ‘Amuse Bouche’, I love ‘The Best Revenge’, I love ‘Money Can’t Dance’, I love ‘Supply and Demand’, I love ‘Door Train Home’, I love ‘Fascinating’....... What’s left? That’s most of the album!

c. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. o Fischerspooner are predominantly labeled as ‘electroclash’ or ‘electropop’; is this a term you would use personally? We were making music and performances and images long before there was a name for what we did. We started on the idea in 1998. The term ‘electroclash’ was coined in 2001. So the name didn’t define us. We already had a clear idea of who we were and what we did. Unfortunately once the name was coined and the genre was defined there was a flood of rather lacklustre artists. There were certain people that kinda sold out the style and ruined the fun for everyone. But I never cared. We are always changing and growing and moving, we do what do and we keep doing it! Tell us about your label, FS Studios? Well, we have only released material from FS on this label so the philosophy has always been the same as what we make. It is a moniker for us to do what we do without any outside influence. A direct relationship between our work and our fans.
Laptop with CD Serato. It is the lightest and easiest thing to travel with. Do you download music without paying? Yes. What projects are on the horizon for you? A solo rock album, a fitness program, a photo exhibition, a book, a documentary and a feature film. What can we expect from your upcoming Bali gig? It is NOT a live show. So there really isn’t any of that theatrical stuff. It is just us playing music that we are into. Very simple and straightforward. BUT, I would love to bring the full show to Indonesia one day. We have never performed in Asia EVER, which has always confused me. So many people tell me that it would be a huge success! But it has just never happened. Maybe next time.
Your album Entertainment’s iTunes bonus track, ‘Fascinating’, is a cover of an unreleased R.E.M. song; Why R.E.M.? Michael Stipe is a longtime friend of mine. He said he had a song he wanted to give me. They had made an electronic version but it was never heard. He felt we would make a cool version and that the lyrical content lent itself to our style. We always have one cover on our albums. This was a fun and cool song to add to our roster. Would you say that New York City as an artistic landscape brings its own influence to your music? I am a citizen of the world. I am influenced by lots of things, not just music. I love to live and work in NYC but I really bring all of my experiences home from all over the world. What is your ‘off to the loo’ track? We just pee in bottles behind the mixer. We never leave the decks. Vinyl, CD or laptop?

Andra & The Backbone Kama sutra fri 30 July 11PM
Sound Like Pop/rock Hail From Jakarta
Have Been For those of you with an ear to the ground on the national music scene, you will no doubt have heard of this rock outfit, kicked into action by Andra Junaidy back in 2006. Andra gained his musical success with the band Dewa 19 as their guitarist, and though he continues to work with them, Andra and the Backbone is a solo project that has brought him another level of respect. Tah RiQ When Action speaks louder with Words...
It doesn’t take long to notice a familiar face in these parts. Bali may be an ever changing tide of comers and goers, but there is also a fast recognition amongst the ‘stayers’, especially when someone stands out with a particular talent or three. Tah Riq has been doing just that. In an unobtrusive and smooth manner, he has managed to slip right into the entertainment stream on the island and move with it before anyone has had a chance to question where he came from. From random moments on the mic alongside minimal DJ sets in clubs to Flamenco guitar driven sounds over a Ku De Ta or Rock Bar sunset, his love for creating music has been reaching plenty of ears and for those listening, it’s been a pleasant change to the norm. 080 | beatmag.com
feature With a bloodline that bounces between Jordan, the USA, Ireland, India and the UK, Tah Riq’s background is as wide spread as his appreciation for musical genres. Now that Bali has been added to his list of places to call home, we figured it was time to find out more... What was it that initially brought you to the shores of Bali and why have you been convinced to stay? All the money in the world won’t buy you sunshine in England and smiles on strangers’ faces - two things I adore about Bali. On a more serious note though, I’d had enough of the UK after my 10 years living there and wanted a change, so on a leap of faith I bought a one-way ticket and left. Bali suits my artistic temperament.
Since arriving in Bali you have certainly dug your heels in and focused very quickly on gaining a reputation for your creative skills. Have you found people here to be generally supportive of what you wish to achieve? Thank you. You know I hadn’t intended to as such but I’m thrilled it’s worked out that way. It’s been more a case of serendipity. The universe was presenting me with opportunities and I simply responded and didn’t let them slip by. In terms of support by in large it’s been great. I think my skills fill a niche here in Bali so I’ve gotten a lot of the right kind of recognition for it. There is definitely a steep learning curve on how to go about it all though.
With a tourist culture based on a transient crowd of holidaymakers and party people, do you believe there is opportunity here to establish a large level of success as an artist? I think it all depends on what your niche is and how you approach it. If you settle for a quick buck bar and club hopping, then you’ll over saturate yourself and that’s definitely a danger. There are a lot of superb musicians in Bali but not enough who produce their own original music unfortunately. If you can set yourself apart from the crowd and market yourself properly then it’s a matter of time before you get noticed further afield in my opinion.
Speaking of your MCing or ‘rhythmic lyricism’ as you call it, as opposed to the many MC’s out there that simply yell into a microphone to try and enthuse a crowd, what sort of technique and
skill is needed to produce a good sound while performing? Good question. There are a number of factors really. Lots of practice first and foremost! Syllabic clarity, sharp precise timing and enunciation will give your rhyming that snare drum like quality. Aside from that, to me it’s about having something strong or entertaining to say. I build my rhymes so that the flow has a rhythm that complements the beat I rhyme over like syncopated solos over jazz.
Have you ever studied vocal technique to hone your art or has it been a case of singing along to your favourite artists over the years to get your tongue and vocal chords used to the idea? I was obsessed with tongue twisters as a kid, always trying to get them clearer and faster. Listening to some faster lyricists, I gradually became aware of how not to slur any words and give each syllable its own attack and let the funny bits punch out.
You have obviously had a keen appreciation for the lyrical structure and the written word for quite some time; what sort of subject matter do you find yourself most drawn to when composing your own poetry and lyrics? Haha, well when MCing I love sexual comedy. It’s great when a crowd only catches a few words because of the speed and I get those “Did he just say that...?” moments. When writing songs for guitar however it’s normally about relationships and life experiences.
MCing is more often related to hip-hop and gangster rap, which in itself often holds many negative connotations as far as what many of the genre’s artists represent; are there any particular messages you like to push with your own music and lyrical content? Yeah, that you don’t have to have been locked up or have to have lived a ghetto, crime infused life to come up with intelligent rhymes with something new to say. To me a lot of rap is so materialistic and uninspiring.
beatmag.com | 081
feature “..you don’t have to have been locked up or have to have lived a ghetto, crime infused life to come up with intelligent rhymes...” Beyond having a knack for jumping on the mic, you’ve also brought with you a competent set of guitar skills; tell us about your relationship with Flamenco guitar... Ah, my relationship with Flamenco guitar, definitely the right way of saying that. It was a love affair that began when I was 14. I saw a Flamenco guitarist playing background music at an art exhibition and was mesmerised. I think it’s the Arab in my blood. I met up with Rizgar, the guitarist, several times and he gave me a book called ‘El Arte Flamenco de La Guitarra by Juan Martin’ if memory serves. That book became my bible for the following two years and I practiced anywhere from 5 to 9 hours a day. Ha ha, I had no social life what so ever. I played until fingers blistered, strings snapped and nails broke.
What has been some stand out moments for you since moving to Bali? There have been so many but one that stands out is I was giving a guitar lesson by the pool outside my house here one day. I had just been telling my student about the law of attraction and that I had put it out to the universe that I was searching for a Cajon (traditional Spanish wooden box) player to accompany me in my performance. Then mid lesson a man walking by the pool comes up to me and goes ‘Ah, you play Spanish guitar? I’m looking for a good Spanish guitarist, I’m a Cajon player’. That moment was perhaps the most uncanny! I perform with him to this day.
Catch Tah Riq performing at The Rock Bar with his Flamenco guitar every Wed from 6 -8pm and keep your ears out for his MC work as he’s likely to pop up anywhere unexpectedly...

When beauty hides the shades of the past‌ Bali; one of the most impressive spikes in the mo-hawk of the Indonesian archipelago, a place where continental shelves are colliding, ancient gods find conflict and harmony and millions of people from different cultures arrive each year to escape the normality of their lives back home.

eeming with life, bursting with renewal and constantly shape-shifting the modern landscape, this unique little island seems to have a consistent knack for taking what doesn’t work, chewing it up and spitting it out into a fresh idea. As quickly as a wet season storm pushes through and drives the dirt from the gutters, buildings go up and structures are torn down, restaurants close their doors and new clubs become hotspots, traffic collides into a tangled mess before streaming back into safety; the ongoing process of destruction and creation clearly visible thanks to a great big fat volcano called Mount Agung which just happened to form the land we stand on, blaring the obvious lesson of just how much a destructive force can lead to new life and fresh beauty. The cycle of life in a rather large nutshell. So what better place for those in need of a change to do a bit of tearing down and rebuilding of their own? On an island where constant change is a given, a belief in reincarnation lies at

feature the core of its people, a collision of cultures is inescapable and a cauldron of varying characters and personalities co-exist within an environment of acceptance. What better place for someone to dismantle and throw away their old selves? What better opportunity for the escapee to regain freedom of mind? What better place for an exile, to burn yesterday’s offerings, to set loose past grievances and to create a fresh personality slate. All of their own. One needn’t spend too much time in Bali before such characters begin to come out of the woodwork, more than eager to further cement their new found identity by breezing over their pre Bali life as though it were just a phase they were going through. “So what were you doing back home?” “Oh you know, this and that, a mix of stuff, development and… building… things. Made some money on the way and sold a few… you know. Artist really, though, wound up in Bali to further my… creativity”
he could see spirits moving through the halls at night. He’d let it all get to him and after booking an anonymous hotel room for a night, something “happened” and the skipper had skipped the continent. “I think I’m looking for a new job,” he said with uncertainty. “Gotta wait and see what happens, I’m waiting for a call”. “Why did you have to bolt?” Stoltz enquired. “There was an ‘incident’...” he replied, wide eyed, staring over my shoulder and out to sea with a wry half smile. We could tell by his face and the drawn out pronunciation of the word ‘incident’ that some seriously heinous shite had gone down. It turned out that the incident involved copious amounts of alcohol, a hold up with a toy gun, an escort named Brandy, an argument, a door slamming and a missing fingertip. It then ended with a quick exit out the back door in the morning as the local police entered through the front. The contract ended abruptly. Now it was time to decompress, reassess, regroup, consider the options and stay low.
‘For those who fell hard, the tropics can provide quite a stage for formulating a new identity...’
Traveling around Indonesia consistently results in many such conversations and exchanges with exiles and expats; often disenfranchised outcasts, misfits and fringe dwellers. Individuals who have spent way too much time on the periphery, and one drunken night simply fell over the edge.
For those who fell hard, the tropics can provide quite a stage for formulating a new identity. Staring out to sea is possibly the best way to contemplate a crossroads in one’s life, but most would argue that easy access to a bar is also a vital ingredient. Your possible future framed with palm trees and glazed with a daiquiri. It was at one of these secluded beach bars on a small island near Bali that my friend, Stoltz, and I met an Australian in such limbo. A skipper in the maritime mining industry hunting for the last traces of precious oil deposits in the far reaches of the world. He had been working off the coast of Cameroon when things had gone a little pear shaped. Pirates had begun regularly spraying the vessel with machine gun fire, one of the crew had died of malaria and another began claiming that
Another exile was met on the same island. A 60-yearold English guy, a beach bar and a sunset chat. Experiencing heavy losses as a result of the financial crisis, a lifetime’s worth of work in the construction industry was lost overnight. Much like his wife, who had decided to move in with the dog trainer. Nice. With the house sold off to compensate the financial fall, like the Aussie, he was now in limbo. He had decided to take advantage of the exchange rate and do some lifestyle arbitrage by riding out the economical storm in Indonesia. “I’m waiting for the bank to tell me that it’s safe to come back” was his line. In the meantime, he had turned inward. Using meditation methods he had learned to cope with the loss of his wife and had embarked on an inward journey through the self. Indonesia provided the coastline and horizon as a focal point for this introspection. Diving also provided an ultimate, serene escape for him. The time spent in the depths, weightless, unaware of the old body and completely removed from all outside elements that might remind him of his predicament. We dived with him. He hung completely motionless, well out in the blue, far from the coral wall for around 5 minutes; he was no one, no thing. A storm raged 20 meters above our heads.

“This exile was at the beginning of the journey, the first phase, the dismantling and sacrificial burning of the past”
“It was not me that stabbed her 43 times!” he snapped, jerking back suddenly with a tainted mist to his stare. As it turned out the culprit was an ex-boyfriend who had then stabbed himself to death after finishing off the girlfriend (yep, nasty). Our Frenchman had been seen with them both that evening and so became the main suspect. “I just want to relax for a while,” he stated as he nervously smashed balls around the holes of the pool table in the lazy beach bar. This exile was at the beginning of his journey, the first phase, the dismantling and sacrificial burning of the past. It was under the forest canopy out the back of some jazz bar in Ubud that we met Raven. American, black silk shirt (open), black Goth jeans, long black straight hair, mid to late 20’s, covered in silver and full of fire, the world was clearly one big buffet and he had an un-suppressible hunger for all it. Slamming another shooter down on the bar, he demanded, “drink with us dudes!”. Raven had discovered a year earlier that he could make more money than he earned in his shitty bar job in The States by setting up connections in the silver jewelry trade in Bali, personally doing runs every few months to transport the silver. There are thousands of stories that weave in and out of each other on this fertile patch of volcanic rock, yet we had broken the seal on just a few. Many more remain hidden or whispered with subtlety through cafes and bars... Of poor gardeners who befriended rich old widows whose wills changed just prior to them being found dead suspiciously. Of men who claim to be living off the royalties of mainstream hits, yet pull up more tales of tax evasion than anything else when their names are googled. Of souls who felt lost in a sea of Western expectations and have found a new platform to become the person they always longed to be, whether built on truth or a reconfigured background. Not saying that every expat on this island is a loose canon, but we’ve all got a little rebuilding to do. Everyone likes to escape the norm and feel that they have found something new. H
undreds of hopeful surfers converged on the shores of Kuta Beach in front of Limoncello Restaurant on the 17th of July to participate in the ‘Red Bull Heli Surf’ competition event. Three lucky participants strong enough to paddle their way to the designated spot were immediately chopper-lifted to the legendary surf spot of G-Land in East Java, accompanied by Red Bull’s Australian pro surfer Ross Clarke-Jones. The competition was open to anyone and everyone strong or fast (or maybe crazy) enough to paddle their surfboards the distance of 350 meters from the shore to a floating buoy, battling riptides and nudging other participants out the way to grab one of the three winning shirts and be swept off in a helicopter to G-Land. The first ever Red Bull Heli Surf was held in Australia in 2008, with two more competitions having followed. Newer rules restricting the board size and harsher punishments for roughhousing have been introduced, with mystery prizes only revealed when winners reached their destination, but this time round participants already knew what was up for grabs (which was the helicopter trip). Being the first competition of its kind held in Bali, the collection of participants ranging from locals and international surfers plus a few lifeguards were all enthusiastic to prove who was the fastest paddler. In the end the three lucky winners who made it to the buoy were fished out of the water by a speedboat before being whipped off to the Red Bull chopper. With nothing but the clothes on their backs and surfboards in hand, the three winners were immediately jetted off to G-land for a once-ina-lifetime experience surfing the legendary left-hand waves of Grajagan.

Twice Diner best burger in town If you find yourself in the busiest part of Legian, then there is a good chance you are standing somewhere on Poppies Lane 2. If so, then get out of the traffic jam and head up to the coolest spot to satisfy your stomach and quench your thirst; Twice Diner! Stadium Cafe & Flapjaks Sanur Jl. Cemara #7, Sanur T: 287882
Hugely successful Kuta institutions Stadium Cafe and Flapjaks have been pulling in the punters with big portions, big screens and big fun for some time now. This week Dan Ashcroft packs up his dessert spoon to check out the newlyopened branch in Sanur...
T
here are two kinds of people in this world; those with a sweet tooth, and those without. As a person possessing an almost unhealthy obsession with all things sugary (only almost), I most definitely fall into the former category. Imagine my excitement then, upon hearing that I would be checking out a restaurant that has a menu almost entirely made up of desserts… Combining two Kuta favourites under one roof, the Rama Restaurant group have taken 0102| beatmag.com 102 |
a Stadium Café and a Flapjaks, and fused them together to bring a new level of entertainment to sleepy Sanur. The aim is to inject a bit more life into the area without going as far as a Kuta-style club pumping out music until the wee hours. Catering nicely to sports fans looking to support their team as well as folks who are after hearty, American-style food, Stadium Café boasts a huge screen, huge menu and equally huge portions in a fun atmosphere somewhere
between a quirky bar and your own living room. Sharing the floor space with Stadium, Flapjaks is unique in Bali as not so much a restaurant but an outlet specialising in light bites, gelato, crepes, waffles, pancakes and all sorts of other sugary treats for people looking for something a little more decadent. On arrival I seek out a comfy spot on the outside decking area and meet with Group Chef Dicky and Sous Chef Gusde (formerly of Mago & Paradiso) who proudly tell me that Flapjaks has 55 different flavours of home-made gelato on offer. An Italian invention, gelato differs from ice cream in that it has a lower butterfat content and the sugar content is balanced so as to provide a natural anti-freeze, preventing it from going as solid as ice cream once in the freezer. The proof, they say, is in
Gusde have worked hard on to get right. Next up on the sweet journey is a blueberry and cheese waffle served as either a half round (39k++) or full round (57k++). It’s a Flapjaks favourite with the real blueberry acidity of the sauce complemented perfectly by creamy dessert-style cheese. All this is starting to get a bit much and I take a breather over a fruity strawberry smoothie (short 35k++, big man 42k++) and wait for the imminent pancake arrival. A sure-fire local hit, the green pandan pancakes with coconut gelato and jackfruit (35k++/44k++) go down exceptionally well, although by this stage I’m seriously struggling – as much as I could sit all day trying everything off the menu I consider my poor stomach (not to mention my teeth) and call it a day. I do however manage to squeeze in an Oreo iced coffee
the pudding and before long the signature mixed fruits gelato set is deftly placed in front of us. Available in two sizes; short (49k++) and big man (95++), it contains chopped fresh fruits, pistachio nuts, five scoops of gelato (choice of flavours), waffle and sauce all piled high in a massive oversized dessert glass. I can say from experience that this dish should not be approached without a gang of mates in tow to dig in and help out – it’s absolutely humungous and easily big enough for 4-5 people to share. While the photographer frantically tries to get the shot before it melts too much, I check out the warm strawberry crepe (45k++) dotted with fresh Bedugal strawberries and whipped cream with a healthy scoop of (obviously) strawberry gelato. As with the waffles and pancakes to follow, the crepe has a European style to it with a perfect balance of crispiness and flavour – something Dicky and
(38k++/41k++) while Dicky explains that every pancake, crepe and waffle dish is available with an alcoholic option. For an extra 12k a serving of Bailey’s, rum and raisin or Kahlua gelato (made with real spirits) can be added to the order to Irish it up a little. Feeling like a balloon I eventually summon up the power to roll out the door and onto my bike for the ride home, vowing to never even so much as look at a pancake again.... At least until tomorrow when I’ll be finishing off the box of takeaway treats tucked under my arm. With four more outlets planned for Stadium and Flapjaks in Bali, as well as a delivery service on the way, there is surely no better place on the island to get your just desserts. Dan Ashcroft.

art Eastside - The Journey BIASA ArtSpace will present the first solo exhibition in Asia for Italian artist Angelo Bellobono. Angelo cites humanity and territory at the pinnacle of his artistic research, stressing the difficulties of belonging and owning an identity understood not simply in a socio-cultural sense but also in a biological sense. His portraits thus convey a sense of dramatic irony, revealing the constant efforts made to seek out an identity and a place in which to belong. Angelo applies different media in presenting his point of view, which includes painting, drawing, sculpting, animation and performance, continuing his mission to carry out projects with a strong social impact.

Two words are intended to be derived from the title of this exhibition. The word ‘eksplorasi’ (meaning exploration) denotes the aim of obtaining more knowledge through investigation, assessment and activities that help to gain new experiences from differing circumstances. The second word ‘eksplosi’ means an explosion or loud bang caused by a sudden outburst or incident. By putting two and two together, this exhibition could be roughly described as an exposure of the artistic achievements of the students from Undiksha and ISI and their explorations into concepts of art. All the artists have recently burst onto the scene, and are hotly tipped to become a huge success in the future.

The World is My Stage
Raden Prakiyul Wahono Noto Susanto Born: Depok, 26 April 1985
Conceptual Basics
Raden has always strived to envision his contemplations through various forms of art, from expressing his aspirations upon canvas to bringing them onstage through his stage performances. Beginning his passion for art while studying at the Faculty of Fine Art at Indonesia’s Art Institute (ISI), he discovered an interest in performing art as he saw it as a better method to express himself. His performances present themselves as a form of criticism on topics regarding social, cultural and psychological human matters. Raden’s use of artistic body language and simple text make sure that his message is received appropriately by the audience, opening their minds to the point being conveyed.
Performances
A memorable performance by Raden was in 2007 where he took part in “Matinya Orang Mati” at Stasiun Dragonball ISI. Raden presented a vision of the monotonous life of man from birth, through his daily activities and eventually into death. Through his movements and the accompanying music, the image of an ordinary Joe was depicted brilliantly. Another stand out performance by Raden was in 2008, performing in “Anak-anak Darah” where he acted amongst several face painted children in a small alley in the city of Surabaya, playing traditional games, depicting the cruel and harsh life faced by children living on the streets.

Beyond just the vodka, a few Wild Pole Dancers were there to heat things up, giving plenty of motivation to the dancers on the floor...

Plaza Indonesia Thursday – Sunday 8 – 11 July
The 5th edition of Brightspot Market was held on the 4th floor of Plaza Indonesia. Despite being held in a larger venue this time, the event was very overcrowded and unable to accommodate the many visitors and tenants offering clothes, accessories, food and other knickknacks. It seems that wherever they hold a Brightspot Market, it will always end up overflowing with hungry eyed shoppers.
