ummertime is here and the feeling is busy. This year’s High Season was brought forward a week or two from normal years because of the coming Ramadhan month and you could say it officially started last weekend. But the High Season still goes on and we have some quality acts on the way. Ian Brown from the Stone Roses, Brand New Heavies, Dave Seaman, Franky Knuckles, Karisma, Heather Small, and a heap more are on the way to entertain us over the next two weeks. Check the What’s On and HereNow sections for the complete details of what we have in store. It’s a beautiful island and a fantastic time to be here. Enjoy it and happy fasting, friends. More thoughts from our VIP readers I like beat mag a lot cz...I think I can discover a new world there... and cz I like to eat very muuuuuuccchhhh... it just keep me update for any new place for hang out or other things... Widya Shanti Well aku suka bagian informasi soal acara2 di semua club or cafe and info soal feature artist, new place to chillnya lengkap ama menu and harga.. (Walaupun cuma sepintas) tapi uda cukup ngebuat pengen nyicip Tapi the beat mnurut aku ada kurangnya di bagian fashion or shoppin’ soalnya yang di feature hanya beberapa dress or pasang baju jadi menurut aku kurang lengkap mungkin dengan nambah sedikit akan lebih menarik that’s all. Thx for asking and hope the beat would be better from year after years! Tanika My comment about the beat mag: The coolest local magazine ever, as I’m new in Bali, I can get a lot of information about what, where & when is the right time to hang out, party, enjoy sunset, etc. It’s very up to date! Now I know where I will be going to have a lot of fun!! The Beat kecil ukurannya besar khasiatnya!!! Nana I like the glossy look and the pictures. But too many ads. Thijs van Kuijeren

theSCOOP The Keys to Patriotism

1

All you musically intellectual people will be happy to hear that Hotel Tugu Bali, in conjunction with BRI Platinum, presents for the first time on the island, the brilliant (and young) piano maestro Ananda Sukarlan to perform live on stage. The concert is scheduled for the 17th of August, to commemorate Indonesia’s Independence Day at Bale Agung Hall in Hotel Tugu Bali. Ananda’s concert is titled ‘Rhapsody of the Archipelago’ and is patriotically dedicated to his country. For information on the event or to book, email: bali@tuguhotels.com or call: 731701 Web: www.tuguhotels.com.

Dancing up a Bali Storm New York City based performing company BALAM has been collaborating with Ubud’s Semara Ratih Gamelan group for a huge 20 years now and to celebrate, they’re currently in Bali presenting some amazing works. Up until the 2nd of September you can catch three brand spanking new works called Sleeping Buddha, Sunda Upasunda-NYC Brothers, and Harlequins Charade, along with their signature pieces Ramayana-Abduction of Sita and Tigerlily and the Dragonfly. Monumental Statue Needs a Home

3 018 | beatmag.com

Next time you’re giving directions to the airport you may need to revise your landmarks. The well-known Dewa Rucci monument on Kuta’s Simpang Siur intersection will soon be moved to make way for a new overpass, planned for construction in order to ease the pressure valve of traffic jams that are congesting the roads these days. The removal of the landmark will allow the local government to create a straight roadway reducing the need for land acquisition for the project’s completion. The governor has stated that he is inclined to move the statue somewhere to the north, creating a small park area surrounded by large trees. Alternatively, the statue could also be placed behind the lighted notice board recently installed at the intersection. We’ve also been warned that in order to build the overpass, we should expect at least a year of worse delays on the road. Yep. Purchasing a helicopter may be the best option…

theSCOOP Get Sexy and Get Wet

Ladies, get out your swimwear in check and guys stick to your gym memberships, The Haven Seminyak’s ultra cool ‘Rocking the Island’ bikini pool party ain’t no place for bad speedo bods. Every Saturday from 4pm - 7.30pm, this event features a line-up of performances, including acts such as the MURI awardwinning female DJ, Cachya, along with bartender flair shows and fire dancers. If you’re feeling a tad hungry and want to line that stomach before you indulge in the ‘buy two get one free’ beer promotion, a snacks and hotdog stand will be on hand to cater for your belly. Quench that afternoon thirst and see the sun off in style. For more information visit www. havenbali.com or call: 738001

A Dose of 5-Star for South Kuta Beach To add to the ever growing action on Kuta beach, a new high-end resort and retail outlet is planned along this stretch, famous for being the very heart and soul of Bali’s thriving tourism industry, to attract yet more people seeking to escape reality for a fortnight. The new Sheraton Kuta Bali Resort with its 200 extravagant rooms and elegant ballroom is set to inject a degree of 5-star sophistication into the area. For those with a weakness for retail therapy, the new retail outlet ‘Beachwalk’ will offer a five star selection of almost 200 exclusive stores and eateries, presenting a fine combination between international brands and Bali’s best home brands. The two new beachfront properties, together with the existing Harris Kuta Resort, are set to open next year and cater for every branch of the travelers’ market tree, and will be operating under the banner of ‘Sahid Kuta Lifestyle Resort’. The inauguration attended by many local dignitaries last week kicked the project off in grand style.

Going Green in Bali

If you’re all into protecting the environment and preserving it for future generations, you’ll be glad to know that R.O.L.E (River, Oceans, Land and Ecology) Foundation has recently opened an Eco Learning Park at Nusa Dua. Instead of leaving a heavy carbon foot print when you travel to Bali, you can leave something positive behind, while enjoying yourself at the Eco Learning Park and interacting with the local community. In visiting the Eco Learning Park you are also donating to ROLE for much needed funds intended to finance free education programs for the needy. For more information and a map to the location visit www.rolefoundation.org, or email: info@rolefoundation.org. You can also call: 8078805 for more information.

Ian Brown A lifetime Speaks for itself

After his voice sang out at the forefront of the Madchester Movement in the 80s and early 90s, it was presumed by some that Stone Roses vocalist Ian Brown would fall away with the band’s break up. Criticism turned into appraisal though, with a self produced and financed album shortly after, leading on to over a decade of solid touring, top selling albums and a score of hit singles. It would be hard to avoid the term ‘rock legend’ when talking of Brown’s achievements, though when it comes to having a chat, he tends to bring everything back to a very human level. Obviously some humans were born to entertain others…

At the 2006 NME awards, you were presented with the "Godlike Genius" award and in 2007 given the Q "Legend" Award; what do you personally feel the most chuffed about achieving and creating when it comes to being handed these labels?

Forget the World Cup, not long ‘til the Premiership kicks off again. What are your predictions for United this season?

I don’t make music for medals or trophies. I'm just happy I am still here and working.

Last year’s ‘My Way’ was apparently inspired by Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ album; any other specific inspirations that forged the album’s direction?

It’s been a long time since the golden days of the ‘Madchester’ scene; do you still kick around with any of the key players from back then? Yes, I'm still in touch with most of the boys from then. Shaun Ryder introduced me at my last Manchester show and I stayed in L.A. with Paul Ryder and my sons last year and speak regularly.

I only recognize the positive! And now that you look back on it do you hold any fresh perspectives on what was taking place at the time? It was a beautiful time and I wouldn't change a thing.

Mark James From running school discos with two tapes and a cassette player, to a 20 year track record behind the decks, and the founder of Future Entertainment - one of Australia’s biggest electronic music entertainment companies - Mark James has pretty much had his life carved out before him from day one. He’s no stranger to Bali or the mighty Famous parties and now that he’s back for another round, we figured it was time he jumped on the mic… Double Six - Famous Party thursday 12 Aug 11PM When did you first consider the world of music to be your full time career choice and what were the major breaks that got you into that position? At a very young age I had a lot of interest and fascination in electronic music, I used to run school dances /discos at lunch times and be the DJ with just tapes and two cassette players! I guess things just progressed and took their shape from these very early days of DJing and promoting. What do you see as the main differences between the Melbourne music scene you found your feet in over twenty years ago and the thriving club scene that so many young DJ’s are hoping to break into today? One of the main differences today is that promoters and/or managers are only booking DJs to play their

night or club if they can bring people into the club, either by way of the guest list or selling tickets, they are not being booked for their DJing talent, so in effect, a lot of clubs are not hiring experienced and/or talented DJs that know how to get crowds moving. So at the end of the day they end up with an empty club anyway! When and where was your first international gig and how did it end up comparing to your expectations? It was a small club in London, back in the days of Acid House music 1989 – 90; a very dark, smoke filled room with big bass sound, strobe lights and people going absolutely nuts. It was great, just what I expected it to be. Since then, playing to huge crowds across the world has become part of your normal existence.

What has been some stand out experiences for you whilst traveling with your bag of tunes over the last few years? Playing such massive events as Global Gathering UK and Dance Valley (Holland) have been defiantly stand out highlights, in saying this I have played some of the biggest and best in Australia and Future Music Festivals are always a favorite. Who have you worked with over the course of your career that has had a marked effect on your views or caused you to redefine your direction? In regards to music the likes of John Digweed & Sasha have always been inspirational, every time I work with them and hear them play it inspires me to push myself forward musically. What was it that first inspired you to set up Future Entertainment and what was involved in the initial process? I was running my own club nights and they were getting bigger so I wanted to take it to the next level with larger events, Future was set up as a brand originally for an event, which then lead it to become the whole company with several offshoot companies to follow over the years. With the company’s growth and your continual success as a DJ, producer and promoter over the years, have you worked out how to become the world’s best delegator or do you simply never sleep? To what do you attribute being able to maintain a balance between your various projects and commitments? No sleep, you got it …… it’s like putting on many caps as they say, sometimes all the planets align and you can juggle your way through things, delegating and having great staff make a big difference. To be honest you just do it, if I had an amazing formula I would write a book and sell millions. For many people the life of a DJ appears to be an easy ride with plenty of wild excess from all sides; have there been times for you where your lifestyle has had to be questioned in order to maintain a forward direction with your career? Not really but you do really have to watch yourself as it can turn into one big party all the time and with several companies to oversee it can make it very hard to control this; if you slip off the rails, so to speak. You just have to be sensible without being boring, enjoy it while it lasts I say!

You faced some issues with your ears last year that caused you to step back from the speakers for some time. How did this occur and what’s been the outcome? Yes it was a nightmare I have Tinnitus which is a constant ringing in the ears, it comes from many years of 7 nights a week DJing then straight into the studio producing. It takes its toll on your ears in a bad way, it got to a stage that I lost 75% of hearing in one ear so I had to take a break from music for 18 months or so, I’m feeling much better now and my hearing has slowly been returning to some sort of normalness. What advice would you give to others to avoid the same problems? WEAR EARPLUGS! How much time have you spent in Bali and how would you describe the music scene here? I have been coming to Bali for 15 years or so, I love the place and the people. The music scene is fantastic; Bali people really know how to party. Give us a run down on what we can expect to hear from you when you hit the decks over here… A full on party set. It won’t be too deep or obscure, no time for that these days, so get ready for a nonstop party time experience with quality tunes of course! Last words? Bali rocks! See you at Famous!

If you haven’t been to a Famous Party yet you are missing out on a seriously huge mark on the Bali event map. Catch James’ set at 1:30 am/ outdoor stage as part of the massive sound excursion...

Lost in Translation

Should language ever be taken so literally?

088 | beatmag.com

E

ver heard the one about the Panda and the restaurant? Eats, shoots and leaves? That rogue comma, the magic ingredient that turns a factual statement into something a little more off the wall. Of course, the joke hinges on the incorrect use of punctuation, and although I can lay no more claim to being an expert on the topic than the next person, I do have a certain pernickety grudge against the incorrect use of not just punctuation, but the beautiful English language in its entirety. Apologies in advance to any American readers out there, I may be using a ‘u’ to spell colour (despite the protests of the spellchecker), and won’t be holding back on my perfect tenses.

feature

beatmag.com | 089

feature Lost in Translation

Punctuation is, of course, just the tip of the iceberg, the thin end of the wedge if you will – especially having lived, worked and taught English in Indonesia for over four years now. Despite the looming threat of Mandarin, English remains the world’s language. The lingua franca of global business, communication and to a large extent, the world wide web. Just last week I was sitting in a sushi restaurant in Benesari with a group of German and Japanese friends, when I realised that despite being the only native speaker at the table, the entire evening’s conversation was held in English. What a shame then that English is truly one of the most difficult languages to learn for non-native speakers. I should know, a large proportion of my working life has been spent trying to hammer home concepts like the difference between infinitives and gerunds to room after room of blank-faced and confused learners. Tenses all over the place, four or five words that all basically mean the same thing, non-phonetic spelling (ever really thought about the spelling of a word like ‘yacht’?), subtle conceptual differences in tone and diction… It’s nothing short of a minefield, and that’s just scratching the surface.

090 | beatmag.com

The upshot on an international island like Bali is more and more establishments with comedy menus, too literal translations and unfortunate spelling mistakes. One particular example that comes to mind is at a beachside café in Nusa Lembongan that boasts ‘diet cock’ on the drinks menu alongside such appetising mains like ‘fried of fork’ and ‘mesh potato’. Other points of hilarity range from muddled instructions for tourists (see inset picture), meaningless slogans (check out the blurbs for each item at a certain bakery in Discovery Mall) to t-shirts emblazoned with ridiculous pairings of words that make absolutely no sense whatsoever. A good friend of mine proudly wears out his Matahari Mall bought t-shirt featuring the rather confusing phrase ‘Get Could’ at every opportunity. To simply poke fun however is missing the point. Yes it’s funny to laugh at this stuff (I urge you, dear readers to have a look at www.engrish.com for daily examples of classic English translations), but let’s consider once again the sheer complexity of the English lexicon. Can you really explain in a simple manner why ‘this freezer is out of control’ is any different to ‘this freezer is out of order’? That basic concepts are grasped at all is encouraging – four years in and comfortably able to order satu lagi Bintang, I’m still rather embarrasingly befuddled by most Indonesian vocabulary and phraseology. The mountain is much higher to climb for English learners in my opinion, yet people continue to undertake the long path upwards. Who cares that for the most part they are getting a little lost halfway up? As Bali grows ever bigger into an international destination, it’s a damn sight more effort than a lot of expats (myself included) have put into picking up the local lingo.

Eight heats will feature two Indonesian and two international competitors, and the twist to 2010 is a ‘mystery surfer’, who is yet to be named, but who was drawn on Sunday 25th July against current ISC Tour’s leader, Pepen Hendrik: “It could be someone really heavy,” Hendrik said. “If they are leaving one spot in the contest open, it’s probably for a really good surfer. Ducking out of work as usual, Dan Ashcroft satisfies his sweet tooth yet again with a light lunch and gelato fix at Delicioso restaurant…

Delicioso Delicioso @ Seminyak

F

ood reviews are usually a reasonably fancy affair; a trip to a restaurant and a formal sit-down meal together with chefs, managers or PR staff. This week however, I decided to go for something a little simpler. Catering for both the tourist and expat markets, Delicioso is perfectly located in the forecourt of Bintang Supermarket. It’s ideal for holiday-makers looking for light bites, gelato, or coffee and cake after a whizz-round the aisles at Bintang, and also for expat types looking for a quick lunch that’s not too far away from the office – exactly what I’m looking for on a busy Monday at work.

Located right opposite the entrance to Bintang, Delicioso has a welcoming, unpretentious feel with friendly staff and quiet atmosphere. The air-conditioned interior is bright and homely, and provides a great place to unwind over simple, delicious food with great prices. It’s open everyday between 7.30am and 9.30pm for breakfast, lunch and of course, plenty of gelato-y frozen treats. Breakfast is a decidedly European affair, with plenty of cereal and muesli offerings as well as croissants, cakes and a few light sandwiches to get you ready for the day ahead. Salads range from the special smoked beef and mozzarella to the mixed Mediterranean salad with tuna, egg, olives and mayo. Moving into lunch territory, a huge range of sandwiches and Panini are available on a choice of homemade freshly baked breads, including baguettes, ciabatta and rye. Being particularly hungry I plumped for the mozzarella and tomato double deck baguette with basil and oregano (32k) together with a freshly squeezed orange juice (24k). The bread is to die for – soft, fresh and warmed slightly – just as it should be. Not too long ago Bali was something of a barren wilderness in terms of obtaining a decent loaf, but thanks to places like Delicioso it seems that all this is changing.

Delicioso Gelato (48k) with the three scoops of gelato accompanied by whipped cream, a dash of liqueur and Italian biscuit – it doesn’t touch the sides as I polish it off quick smart in time to grab a takeaway latte (26k) and get back to work (I do actually do ‘proper’ work – it’s not all cakes and Gelato, honestly). If like me you enjoy a cold treat on a hot day, make sure to seek out Delicioso’s other two Gelato stalls located on Jl Padma Street and inside Waterbom Park in Tuban – oh and don’t forget to ask one of the staff for a Delicioso stamp card. Each time you buy something you’ll get a stamp, and once you hit ten stamps (in the same category) it can be redeemed for a free item. Mine’s already filling up fast… Dan Ashcroft

The main reason for the exceptional quality of the bread is down to parent company Ixora Cakes, based further up the road in Seminyak. This fully equipped bakery has been churning out top-notch European style breads, cakes, sweets, muffins, brownies and all manner of other yummy treats for some time now to a huge range of clients all over Bali. Selling wholesale to restaurants and villas as well as catering for private events is still very much on the agenda, but I for one couldn’t be happier that there is now a place to pick up the daily fix of bakery goodness. As I’m finishing up my baguette I can’t help but hear the large white freezer positioned at the front of the restaurant calling softly to me to come and have a look at what’s inside. The real star of Delicioso is the mouth-watering array of Gelato flavours on offer (16 to be precise, although each day they are rotated from a total of 47). As I made very clear in the last review, I’m a huge fan of Gelato, and so with sampler spoon in hand, proceed to have a nibble of each flavour (for research purposes of course). Settling for strawberry, mango and coconut I order up the

Peephole Security Viewer Standard peepholes are not terribly useful gadgets – giving you a warped fisheye view of doorstep strangers and letting them know you’re at home (and spying on them) with the visible flicker of your eye behind the lens. This modernized version called the Peephole Security Viewer however, provides a crystal clear view of trouble – and trouble’s mates – on its 2.5-inch LCD panel. It also lets you privately screen your visitors as the unit replaces and permanently occludes the eyepiece. www.thinkgeek.com $119.99

The display format is pretty standard, it is 2.4inches, and the Nokia C3 Smartphone itself is easy to handle. The new Nokia C3 cell phone is equipped with a 3.5-inch plug and USB interfaces. art In The Praise of Women The female form has dominated art since the creation of the opposite sexes, a fact clearly proven by 35,000 year old statues of the goddess Venus. The grace and beauty of the woman has also made its imprint upon Indonesian contemporary artists Ida Bagus Indra, Ni Nyoman Sani and Teguh Ritmar Iman. The artistic trio are featuring their female-inspired works in an exhibition titled ‘In Praise of Women’ featuring their love of the female form, proving that the beautiful faces of Eve are as infinite as the stars. Saat Usia Lima Puluh (At Fifty) Looking at the works of Hanafi, you will notice the absence of design. His use of the elements of paintings in a way belies their original functions, for example his use of lines do not define an object and his use of color carries no special emotion. There is no organized construction of composition to suggest any aesthetic intention, and the shapes/forms that are realized do not represent a particular archetype. In his works, Hanafi proceeds somewhat like a poet. Just as the latter utilizes words to “break” meaning, and words to add emotion to a perception, he too thrives on crossing boundaries, extending to an unknown depth of emotional perception.

Whose Canvas Is This?

I made

Somadita Concept

Art has become more than a passion for I Made Somadite, it has become a way of life for this unique individual. Exploring more of his artistic side by studying at Indonesia’s Art Institute (ISI), Soma is able to visualize his contemplations by applying paint upon the canvas. Never having any true plan on what will appear, Soma goes only by instinct, freeing his mind and letting his lingering subconscious thoughts lead his body to complete the work. Unnatural and common forms are what manifest through Soma’s technique, some might be recognizable but for the undefined shapes. Soma intends to open your thoughts and tries to allow the distortion to eventually show its true nature.

Exhibitions

His work has led Soma to feature many of his pieces of art in group exhibitions around Bali, and to date has held two solo exhibitions, the first titled ‘Valentine Willie’ at The Chedi, Ubud in 2002 and the second in 2006 titled ‘Animal in Love’ at Paros Gallery, Sukawati. Soma will feature his latest works for a solo exhibition titled ‘Unnatural Selection’ on the 21st of August at Paros Gallery.

feature So what music are you into at the moment? Pop ballads, such as Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, also dance punk (The Ting Tings) and some pop rock. What was the first record you bought—any interesting story about it? Symphony (Fariz RM) – Trapesium. I was in junior high. I’m a big fan of Fariz RM and I bought it from my friend’s sister. What is/are your all-time favorite albums and why are they so meaningful to you? I’d say Joni Mitchell - Turbulent Indigo. Listening to this album feels like having a nice conversation with Mitchell. The music is incredibly deep on many layers. Calming vocals from her soul makes me sure that being a musician is the best profession in the world. Another would be Edie Brickell & New Bohemians- Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars Wild! Brickell proved that you don’t have to have perfect pitch/tune to be a singer. The most important thing is singing from your heart!

What was the worst record you ever purchased? Eeeek… Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate? Jack Johnson’s wife! What song/album do you choose to start your weekend? Michael Franti and Spearhead. And the song/album to end the weekend? Bob Marley. Cooking for dinner, having a glass of red wine, and listening Uncle Bob’s stuff is the perfect to end my weekend! The Black Crowes -The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion brings me back to a lot of Potlot memories and Ben Harper – Welcome to the Cruel World is a must have in the car!!! Also, Slank – Geenerasi Biru. Great music from 5 brilliant musicians. 15 years after, still rocks! (Check out the backing vocals on Generasi Biru!!!!!! Ha ha ha!)

Oppie is now in the mixing process for her 7th album, with a tentative release date of September 2010 (after Idul Fitri). Since April 2009 she’s been working as the ambassador for Peduli Perempuan and released a limited edition album Tentang Perempuan, in which all the songs are concerned with women’s issues. 0147 beatmag.com | 147
