t seems the poles of difference between Kuta and Seminyak are forever growing wider apart. A quick look down at Kuta last week on a typical Wednesday night confirmed that Kuta is looking more like the Wild West every day. Between the road works, the dust and the mayhem, the central Jalan Legian/Poppies Two zone of Kuta has reached new levels of decadence and debauchery, but the punters at night, mostly young and mostly inebriated, appear to be loving every minute. As half of the establishments there have the look of decaying into ruins before they’re even finished, the people still flock in by the thousand. Meanwhile, the über stylish and maybe sometimes pretentious Seminyak has been riding on a wave of development bringing with it a plethora of chic venues that are attracting an even chic-er crowd. There will always be the Kuta and the Seminyak crowd on this island, one styled in Bintang t-shirts, the other in Dsquared runners and the likelihood of them mixing becomes even more and more remote. There was a time when new Kuta bar owners would say they want to bring up the level, they wanted to make more classy venues, but you don’t hear that anymore, it seems they have accepted their fate and the sweet sound of a ringing cash register, one Bintang at a time, is ruling the immediate future. Cheap flights to Bali are bringing thousands of limited budget punters every week and at some stage you get the feeling they will have to fence off central Kuta and let them have it. Fair enough, Kuta has always been that way and we loved having the option of having a pumping, grinding night out in sin city but personally I think it’s now going too far. Bring back a more stylish Kuta before it’s too late. Letter Hello Mr Rugdee, Your forecast in The Beat Magazine is really on the spot. I just wanted to compliment you on that, that is all. Yours, Emile (me too, he is so on it over the last few editions.Ed)

Your first international gig; where was it and did it live up to your expectations?
personal line that you won’t cross when it comes to genres?
It was in Sao Paolo, Brazil in 1991. I was working at Mixmag at the time and its parent company DMC Ltd had a lot of branches worldwide. It was through one of those that the booking was made and it was at a club called Colombia. I remember how different it was to the UK scene at the time but how the music transcended cultural and language barriers. And so it proved on a massive scale over the next ten years. Acid house really exported itself right around the world.
No. I don’t think I do. Barriers and preconceptions are there to be broken. I hate the way music gets put into genres. There should only be two boxes; good and bad. The only criteria I have when doing a remix is that I think I can do a brilliant job with the source material to turn the track into something even better.
First original track; did it ever meet the ears of the general public or is it in the private diary vault? The first track I made was with Steve Anderson and it came out on Island Records. We called ourselves Brothers In Rhythm and the track was called ‘Peace & Harmony’. It actually ended up being re-released as the B side to our next release ‘Such A Good Feeling’ which went on to make the Top 20 in the UK pop charts. Personal favorites; any tracks from over the years that will always remain more sentimental than other? There’s loads but ‘Confide In Me’ is the one I hold dearest. Steve and I wrote, produced and remixed that for Kylie Minogue and it was really the launch pad for her second coming after the PWL (record label) years. I’m very proud of that one. Having played in more than seventy countries to date, what have been some of the more far out and off the wall places you’ve ended up? I’ve played from the deserts of Jordan to the beaches of Brazil, from the pyramids of Egypt to the Arctic Circle. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think DJing would take me around the world like it has. I’m very lucky and privileged. When it comes to remixing, you’ve given a facelift to a wide range of artist’s tracks; do you have a
044 | beatmag.com
Do you generally have free rein to take the track where you want from start to finish of production or do artists like to be involved in the process? Production is different to remixing. With remixing I wouldn’t do anything unless I had complete free rein. But with production; that’s about bringing the very best out of the artist so it’s very important to have them involved. What was your first professional set-up as far as gear goes, back when you were playing weddings and birthday parties? I had a mobile disco set up during my teenage years; an FAL belt driven double turntable unit with police sirens and rope lights. You name it. I was Dave Doubledecks! Hahaha... And your tech rider these days? Oh, it’s very simple. 2 x Pioneer CDJ2000s and a DJM800 or a DJM2000 if they can get it. With such high demand and an obviously endless stream of work ahead of you, have you found that your personal freedom has been muzzled by a busy schedule? Do you still have the leeway to make spontaneous decisions both creatively and professionally? I have a family now so with that comes responsibility that can put restraint on my spontaneity and professional decisions. But to be honest, there’s very little that I want to do that I can’t. It’s all about

planning. Finding time to do everything I want to do both personally and professionally. I always liken it to a circus performer spinning plates. I’ve gotten to be good at that over the years. Best three moments of the last year? Oh God, I can’t even remember last week let alone last year! I live in the present and don’t really have time to look back and reminisce. Can I do this year? If so, off the top of my head I’ll say touring Australia with my family for the Good Vibrations Festivals in February, getting to play Space in Ibiza for the first time in June and my football team, Leeds United getting a promotion.
It is tough but I have a very good label manager in Scott Dawson who runs all the day to day business. So my role concentrates on the music and A&R. It works well although it’s a really tough market out there at the moment. Don’t get into starting a record label these days if you wanna make money. It’s a labor of love for us. Who’s spinning on your Ipod at present? Four Tet, Caribou, Robyn, Broken Bells, Darwin Deez, Tracey Thorn, The Foals, Jonsi, LCD Soundsystem and thousands more.
Three things you hate having to deal with when it comes to touring? Flight delays, sleep deprivation and hangovers. Those with clear musical creativity in their bones are generally appreciative of a wide range of genres and styles; are there any areas of music that you would like to experiment with outside the electronic world? I’m quite open to anything really. I would definitely like to pursue songwriting as a career again in the pop world. I find that a challenge. Creating music for the masses that has style and substance. There are plenty of people out there who work at one thing and escape into music as a separate hobby; what do you use to clear your head when you need a rest from all your musical activities? I watch movies and football and spend time with my children. How much time do you manage to give to your label Audio Therapy? Is it a battle to find a decent balance between all your commitments?

Chris Bekker keeping music to the point...
Double Six saturday 28 aug 11PM Heading back to Bali from his hometown Berlin, Chris Bekker is ready to drag people onto the Double Six dance floor once again. The Beat caught up with him before playtime…
Having played in both Bali, Madrid and Barcelona previously, how would you compare the music scenes between them? First of all, the most obvious thing is the mixture of cultures in Bali´s music scene which makes the whole setting even more exciting. And party people in Bali are very open to any kind of cool sound experiences. What would you define as the ‘Iberian Sound’? “Iberian sound” is very much influenced by the little bit of “positive tribal cha cha” in the blood. You simply can’t keep yourself away from the dance floor – impossible. How did you manage to find yourself involved in the Berlin dance scene and what were the biggest breakthroughs for you in gaining success from there?
052 | beatmag.com
I have been living in Berlin for almost 15 years now. And not to tell a secret: Berlin IS unique, especially musicwise as Berlin is one of the leading cities in electronic club tunes. The biggest breakthrough for me in Berlin was when I became resident DJ at my favorite Berlin club – the GMF@WEEKEND CLUB. Gaining a reputation there made things easier for me in many other countries and cities. What methods do you use for researching and finding new material for your sets? Well, the biggest resource is my DJ network, which has lately become more than just business – really close friends. We exchange new trends and remixes amongst each other; tracks that you cannot find in the record shops or on any website. And of course travelling gives
onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic
you so many new inspirations – combining worldwide sound experiences to create one new sound; my own! What’s your standard technical set up? I come from Germany, the home country of the socalled BAUHAUS style. So, my technical set up is very reduced. I use a minimum amount of technical features to reach maximum concentration on what we are all in the club for: fun, along with a unique and pure sound. I only use CDs - no laptop to hide behind. 100% pure party interaction. Which track do you think you’ve played more than any other over the course of your career? Uhhhh, this question is a tough one to answer: if I played by laptop, I could simply check the statistics. But as I am deciding the CD-tracks individually within every set, I have to make a good guess: I think my own Progressive mix of the Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams” is definitely in my top three.
Any major projects in store for the rest of this year? There are several releases coming up: the next ones are a Club Mix for Australia´s Idol and platinum winner Natalie Gauci in September and two of my own tracks in the last quarter of this year. Who have you most recently started listening to for the first time? My dad. Your favorite three tracks of this year? Ivan Pica “Relax” Dimitri Vegas “Salinas” Funkagenda “Lmaoblade” Last words? I always leave those to others as I am more fascinated by sounds than words…
Any big time hits that you’d be happy to never hear again? I think the biggest challenge for us DJs sometimes is that we get most of the tracks far before their official release. So it happens that we consider a track to be “out” before or at the time it has just reached its peak. But to be really honest: I am not so much chart- or hitoriented, more sound-oriented. And in the end, the audience loves this attitude… Have you had anyone that you would consider a mentor over the years? Checking the meaning of mentor would mean “somebody encouraging and supporting you and giving you hints and preventing you from doing the wrong things”. So, taking all this into consideration, there are two parties: First – my fans. Second – Chris Montana, my favorite producer/re-mixer and label owner of S2G records. What’s been the highlight for you over the past year? One definite highlight was spinning open air at Berlin´s Brandenburg Gate in front of thousands of people this summer. And another personal highlight will of course be Bali in August for me.

ister Madchester himself, the ‘King Monkey’ Ian Brown rocked into town last week with his full band on board and brought a rather large touch of nostalgia to Hard Rock Café, not to mention a huge set of awesome tunes. The British blood was running high in the crowd as Ian’s unique stage presence held the room. Subtitles may have helped when it came to his chatting between songs, but for most it was enough just to see him jogging on the spot with raised hands, singing through 20 years of classic hits right back to his days with the Stone Roses. It’s not often we get to see an intimate performance in Bali with an international legend of these proportions. Keep ‘em coming!

he masses poured in once again to get sun baked in the fine surrounds of Ku De Ta and all its beachside glory. It took a while for people to warm up to the stage for a dance, but in the meantime the bars filled up either side as everyone got socially lubricated in high season style. Outside of acrobatics and costumed dancers, Heather Small brought a live element to the show that got everyone’s attention, famous for her vocal talent that took flight with M People back in the 90’s. With the dance floor then shaking, Chicago’s Frankie Knuckles brought his heavyweight DJ bag of house tracks to the decks and kept everyone on the dance pulse, famous for his part in spearheading the House movement in the 80’s and 90’s. Consider this party a warm up for a month of Ku De Ta goodness.

oulman Carlton J Smith is an amazingly engaging, charismatic and dynamic performer. He’s currently ripping it up like James Brown at his sunset shows Wednesdays -Sundays at SOS Anantara until 5th September. Showtime starts 5.30 pm and it’s free entry so get down there for a cocktail and say hi. We did... What’s your favourite song ever? When it comes to songs there are too many to mention. Such is my love of music. But I’ll take Ave Maria and Baby Don’t You Weep, those two get to me every time. How did you get into the music business? I got into James Brown at a very early age. I saw him perform and I thought this is what I want to do and that’s what started it off. But how did you know you could do it? You don’t really know, you’re just compelled to do it. And hopefully you have the fortitude that will keep you going in spite of rejections cos you’re gonna get rejected. Out of all my buddies growing up, I was the one who couldn’t sing, I couldn’t perform, but I kept doing it, kept wanting to do it. Hey! That’s a question that no one has ever asked me! What was your first big break? I got to play James Brown in a movie, ‘Liberty Heights’
066 | beatmag.com
that was pretty big and I will always be appreciative of that. Tell us about your passion for clothes. Again, it was James Brown. Every time I saw him step up on the stage, he and his band were dressed and groomed immaculately, and when these people walked out on stage, they looked magnificent. It’s a shame these days cos people get up on stage in sneakers and jeans and T-shirts. If you’re a rapper that’s one thing, but if you’re a singer... well, there’s nothing that looks better than a well dressed man. What have you got tattooed on your arms? Oh, these are the names of all my heroes. Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Curtis Mayfield, these are all the guys I want to sing like, and these are all the guys I wanted to be – James Brown, Al Green, Bobby Womack, Sly & The Family Stone... If I’m having a bad day I can put on a record by any one of these guys and it will really change my day.

The headliners kicked in from around half one as Gina Star and Australia’s dance guru Mark James got active on the decks. DJ Deny and DJ’s Agnelli & Nelson kept it rolling as the sounds moved from House through to Trance and Electro. The troops pulled in from Kuta, though the roads aren’t getting any wider with the traffic, so getting into the Double Six area is near impossible at the moment. The reward once you’re there though is that if you’re locked in there’s plenty to do. Though an island paradise for many, Bali can be a relentlessly hostile environment for its street dogs. Although some manage reasonably well, for many others, life can be a stressful and frightening fight for survival. The Beat’s Tosca travels to the Bali Animal Welfare Association in Ubud, to meet some of the lucky ones and the humans who make it possible…
“Our dog became part of our melded fabric, a tightly woven and inseparable strand in the weave that was us. He gave us a gift, at once priceless and free: he taught us the art of unqualified love. How to give it; how to accept it.” John Grogan As somebody who (controversially) has more of a soft spot for animals - particularly dogs - than my own species, this quotation is the kind that typically brings me to tears. And I’m not alone. Many dog lovers feel the same, and know from personal experience that dogs are known as “man’s best friend” for a damn good reason. They have protected us and hunted for us since the first semitame wolves of prehistoric days, and have been our loyal companions ever since. Dogs are not “just dogs” (as I was once informed by some empathetic
074 | beatmag.com
soul the day my first dog died): they are faithful and intelligent creatures who love their owners unconditionally, and to the end. When I first touched down in Bali seven years ago, I have to admit I was appalled at the plight of some of the dogs, who were dehydrated, starving, and covered in skin parasites. Some were scurrying about wild-eyed amongst the traffic. Others were picking through trash for food. One even received a kick from a Western tourist, for no reason other than sport. So in a delicious act of vengeance, my boyfriend kicked the tourist. After all, we are in Bali. It was Karma. It took me a long time to accept that not all, but many dogs in Indonesia live this existence, and that the culture here is simply different.
When Californian ex-pat Janice Girardi first arrived 28 years ago, she never expected to be doing what she’s doing now. Jewelry designer-turned-founder of the non-profit Bali Animal Welfare Association (BAWA), Janice bought her first Bali puppy from a street seller. She offered $1 but was informed that this man cut off puppies’ tails and sold those for a dollar, So Janice gave him $10 instead, and took off with the puppy under her arm. She had her for 16 years – and the rescue mission of a lifetime began… Four puppies were running around happily in the BAWA shop on Jl. Monkey Forest in Ubud on Monday. One pup in particular stood out. Her name was Mia, a brindle-colored Bali dog, with fantastically foxy ears. She was the oldest at 5 months, but with the sweetest temperament. It didn’t take long to realize that the reason she seemed different was because she’s completely blind. She copes superbly well, though she does from time to time bump into the odd chair leg! Mia, along with all the others, is currently looking for a safe and loving home, and it’s hard not to take every one of them there and then. Turning down Janice’s offer of comfortable seating, we conduct the entire interview on the floor, draped in puppies. She tells me that Mia’s
story is one of her favorites, as she rescued her herself after finding her abandoned, unable to see, and crying in a flooded, rat-infested market. This is how Janice spends many of her days, as well as conducting Sterilize/Neuter and Rabies Vaccination programs, organizing educational visits to schools, and meeting with reps from the Government and global animal charities. Add to this, routine street feeding with rice and boiled eggs (which often contain a worming tablet – an unsung animal lifesaver), and I am truly amazed at the sheer scale of what she has taken on, with the help of some amazing volunteers and staff. Asked if she ever allows emotion to get in the way, she sheepishly admits she is known amongst Indonesians as ‘Ibu Cepat Marah’ (Lady Who Gets Angry Quickly), but she has learned now that there’s no sense in getting angry, because much of the time it’s a lack of education or money that results in many animal welfare problems, not to mention the religious superstition of the island. Two of her hardest struggles with individual dogs have boiled down to an issue of religious practice. The first was a painfully thin dog that she fed for 6 weeks until he disappeared. When the villagers were asked of his whereabouts, they told her that he’d been thrown over a cliff. A cleansing ceremony was taking place, and the dog was
beatmag.com | 075
feature
considered too unclean to stay. Perplexed by the conflict between this event and the notion of karma, Janice simply had to move on and continue helping other dogs. Another religious practice is the slitting of the Blang Bunkem puppy’s throat (a male pup with brown hair and a black face) so that the blood gives prosperity to the ground on which it falls. Sometimes these dogs can be saved. Other times, the religious traditions of locals have to be respected. Bali is a Hindu island in the midst of many Muslim islands; and in Islam, dogs are considered to be dirty animals, which stems from a point in history when the rabies virus was rife. In October 2008, rabies arrived in Bali, and has caused approximately 75 deaths since. The Government, who had to do something, began a mass culling of street dogs, using food laced with strychnine or poisoned darts, which can cause a long and agonizing death sometimes lasting days. BAWA campaigned against this killing policy and began to promote a rabies vaccination program beginning in Gianyar instead, after the World Health Organization stated that this was the only proven solution. At least 70% of the island’s dog population must be vaccinated for the program to work, and although waiting for permission to take this pilot project island-wide, Janice’s team have already managed to treat 60,000 dogs this year; that’s 300-400 per day! I never expected to be blinded with science on an animal shelter visit, but the facts are, that on an island where waste disposal is such an issue, killing dogs only means more food is available on rubbish dumps etc for the remaining population, who in turn will become healthier, and breed more. Basically, Bali’s stray population is supported naturally by trash. Killing dogs also worsens the rat problem, as cats can only do so
076 | beatmag.com
much when it comes to the bigger, serious diseasecarrying critters. BAWA is relying on donations along with Janice’s personal contributions, to not only continue neutering, rescuing and treating dogs, but to continue funding this program. I find the whole problem overwhelming, but Janice assures me that the key to a better future is to raise more money to fund the Education Program and target the next, possibly more open-minded, generation. BAWA holds a contest where 50 kids are selected from schools to take a puppy home and care for it for 6-10 months, and all sorts of prizes are awarded to the kids who do the best job. In this way, it is the younger generation who teach their elders to see dogs in a different light. As I cuddle 8-week-old Bella, the rest of the pups climb onto Janice’s lap, clamoring for her attention. They adore her, and in a funny way, it’s as though they know she saved them, and the only way they can think of to express their gratitude is to drown her in doggy kisses. As expected, I shed a tear after I leave today, but thankfully, it’s a happy tear, because these animals have been saved. There are many more like them and BAWA relies completely on your support to carry out their amazing work. As Janice says, there’s no point sitting back because you think you can’t make a difference. You can. And believe me, there’s no better reward than a visit to the shop for the best thank-you cuddle you are ever likely to receive… Reach the 24-hour BAWA ambulance on 0811 389004. Visit www.bawabali.com for more information on rabies or the charity’s other projects. You can also donate money, register as a foster carer/volunteer or provide a home for cats and dogs like Mia.

Brand New Heavies

elf produced legends of jazz, funk and dance grooves, The Brand New Heavies have been sailing strong for over twenty years and have no intention of slowing down. With a recent trip to Bali to headline Ku De Ta’s tenth birthday bash, The Beat stepped up to the mic for some words with guitarist Andrew Levi…
TB: Over time we’ve seen you incorporate various elements from other genres into your writing, from hip hop to rap; would you say that this is a conscious decision on the band’s part to widen the audience or is it simply a natural progression as each band member is influenced by new sounds? AL: I see all music as the same, I can be influenced by J S Bach just as much as say, The Who. Maybe it’s just the case for musicians and songwriters but, there is so much music to be inspired by out there in the world. It all seeps into your head, when you’re in the lift or watching TV and you just have to really “listen”. TB: Twenty years is a lot longer than the life of most marriages. Have there been many periods where momentum has been lost or relationships
078 | beatmag.com
within the band have threatened the continual success of the group as a whole? AL: We released our first big record with N’Dea (vocalist) in 1991 and our first big hit was in 1992, since then we have only been close to breaking up once or twice. It’s always the people around the core members that cause the problems. N’Dea and the boys LOVE music and we are all blessed and gifted people with very little to no formal musical training. I think it makes us all humble in the studio and on stage and makes for a very level playing field, and that is why I think we can still make magic together. TB: Not to keep highlighting the age of the band (cough cough), but you have obviously all witnessed a lot of changes on the technology
front as the years have gone by. From cutting records to burning CD’s, from word of mouth and posters to text messages and internet posts; do you guys consider yourselves quite on the ball when it comes to utilizing the next available tool for marketing and distributing your music? Has there been any noticeable change on the sales or fans front due to these trends? AL: We are all on the ball, we own Ipads, iPods, Mac Pros; most of our new album will be made on a Mac. We also employ people who are experts in the field of internet marketing. TB: With such a strong reputation as a live performance band, do you believe your fan base has been secured predominantly by touring or through reaching ears over the radio waves? AL: Airplay widens the audience - simply because one can reach more people in a shorter period of time. These days the internet is very powerful and I’m sure that we have gained some heavies love via the WWW. Touring will always keep our fans onboard. Seeing the heavies on stage re-ignites the passion that our fans had back in the day. TB: What has been the most surprising area of support for you guys worldwide? AL: Eastern Europe has been a big surprise for us. They love us and are surprisingly very funky people. It’s as if we just came out. We played in Georgia last month and we were blown away when 3000 kids danced and screamed to our set. That always gives us a real boost to keep on going. TB: Any experiences on the road that have caused you to walk away shaking your heads and wondering what the hell just happened? AL: Only when I broke a string close to my solo in New York, then my amp blew up... everything that could go wrong went wrong, I nearly cried!
TB: Was there much contact kept up between N’Dea Davenport and the band after she left to pursue her solo work in ’94? AL: We kept in contact yes, we all needed a break from the success of Brother Sister, it sold over a million and we promoted it for 18 months solid. N’Dea was always originally signed to the label as a solo artist so she could have gone at any time. The time was right for N’Dea to come back, we had an offer from Starbucks to make and release an album via their network of stores but they wanted N’Dea and no one else. I got on the phone and called her and a year later we put out the album “Get Used To It”. TB: When it comes to songwriting is there a large amount of work that results from improvised jams or are the songs we hear predominantly played as initially written down? AL: Songs come from many places; jams, like ‘Brother Sister’ or solo efforts for example ‘Never Stop’. Anything can happen but as long as it’s good, we use it. TB: Any major events taking place in your personal lives lately that you are all excited or concerned about? AL: Life goes on like anyone else’s in the world of the Heavies. The nicest thing is that we are all in wonderful relationships at the moment and that’s a first for us all. TB: What have you been enjoying while in Bali besides cranking out a set at one of the best beachside venues in Indonesia? AL: It’s been exciting listening to some local DJs and bands in Bali. Plus getting out to party! TB: Last words? AL: Life is very short so dance!

The CSC, chaired by Komang Widarna, was originally founded to support local surfers and take care of the beach, but this year’s contest had a special focus on the local ‘groms’ – youth surfers, for those not fluent in surf lingo. With a belief that sometimes Bali’s big name contests and surfers can hog both the world-class waves and the limelight, CSC decided to give the youngsters from Brawa to Kedungu a chance to battle it out amongst themselves. Papa’s Jl Pantai Kuta Legian Tel. 755055
Fresh from a holiday overseas, Tosca returns to Bali and to work, and checks out award-winning Italian restaurant, Papa’s. Except, it’s not really much like work… is it?
If
Papa’s Italian restaurant was an actor, it’d be Tom Hanks. Or Jack Nicholson. In fact, insert the name of any actor here, who has scooped multiple gongs throughout his glittering career, and you’d just about hit the nail on the head. Because one of the first things that catches my eye is the number of awards on the wall by the kitchen, including Best Italian Restaurant and Best Dessert. It all sounds very promising…
92 | | beatmag.com 092
The venue itself is a fusion of chic and contemporary style, with something a little more traditional: and by ‘traditional’, we’re talking Mediterranean here, not Balinese. Al fresco tables face the beach, and are draped in simple white tablecloths and lit by candles. Recent renovations have seen a large new bar installed along with a second storey balcony, specifically designed to cater for Bali’s many sunset worshippers. All the chefs are hard at work in the spotless kitchen, yet every one of them has a smile for any customer who catches their eye. Open since 1999, Papa’s is a member of the Alam Resorts group, along with other popular Bali names such as Ifiori. There’s almost a family feeling between the staff and customers here, many of whom return year after year. This genuine friendliness is what makes the atmosphere at Papa’s that little bit more special: the staff care. And in true Italian fashion, families with children are especially welcome. Restaurant supervisor Made tells me that kids can go off and make pizza
or feed the fish in the pond, leaving their parents to sit back and relax with a drink to the sounds of the nightly live solo musician.
one of the house specialties: the Vulcano Pizza (125K). The Vulcano comes with three different stuffings: the ‘Fujiyama’ (freshwater prawns, tuna and anchovies); the ‘Kintamani’ (beef, ham, spicy Speaking of drinks, I’m quickly presented with lamb sausage and salami), or, for all you hogs out Papa’s most popular cocktail, a Berry Sensation there, the ‘Mount Agung’, which includes all of the (78K), which consists of vodka, triple sec, coconut above! You’ll notice I said ‘stuffings’ here instead liqueur and strawberries, all blended together of the traditional ‘toppings’; and that’s because this pizza is something of a work of art, coming out of the oven with a thin pizza base covering, that has risen up in the wood firing oven, making the whole thing look remarkably like a Christmas pudding, particularly as Italian grappa is drizzled over it and set alight. Quite a few flash bulbs go off as this rather impressive and unique pizza is delivered to our table. After cutting away the top, a beautifully tasty and filling pizza pie is revealed, which I eventually had to take home ‘bungkus’, as the pizza wasn’t the only thing that was stuffed.
with ice to form a delicious kind of alcoholic smoothie. An ice cold drink in front of me and Made cracking jokes, and this feels more like a night out with friends than work. And this is the thing about Papa’s – you are made to feel special and individual – just like the dishes they serve up. Several items featured on the menu, such as the Garlic Prawns appetizer and Warm Chocolate Cake dessert are cooked up using recipes that countless customers ask to be given, but they are a more closely guarded secret than Coca Cola’s. After swaying towards the huge Seafood Platter for Two (499K), which looks more like it could feed the five thousand, we decide to keep our order strictly Mediterranean, and opt for the Braised Lamb Shank (179K). This dish is served with braised vegetables and whipped garlic potatoes, and explodes with rich and delicious flavours. The lamb is succulent and teeming with taste, literally falling away from the bone. Our second main course choice had to be
Ending the night on a truly high note, we tucked in to the award-winning Warm Chocolate Cake (49K); which was indeed warm, rich, luxurious chocolatey heaven on a plate, served with cream, strawberries, and a chocolate sauce. And, if Papa’s restaurant is Tom Hanks, this cake is surely the Forrest Gump of the menu. It’s a long time since I’ve tasted a chocolate cake this good, and for a second there I’m concerned I’m going to drool on their pristine tablecloth or spray someone whilst talking, due to overactive saliva glands. Fortunately, I maintain control of my mouth, and manage to order a coffee to ease the bulging of my incredibly satisfied stomach. There’s a large variety of coffees available, including one blend called Café Rituale (50K), that’s so posh, only management are allowed to pour it. I particularly like the quirky “We Give Up...” option - the final coffee on the extensive list, which allows customers to design their own blend. What was I saying about individuality and well-looked after customers..? Papa’s may have “given up” looking for yet another coffee… but I too, have officially given up looking for as unique a pizza or as good a chocolate cake in Bali. Papa’s don’t need to preach… the quality speaks for itself. Tosca beatmag.com | 093

Revelation I
Made Arya Palguna’s exhibition titled “Revelation” leans on the definition of a revelation as a transcended premonition of a holy person, gained through spiritual meditation. Palguna in a way has shifted the spiritually religious explanation to correspond with his own meditative artistic reawakening, which has resulted in the artistic pieces he showcases in this exhibition. The exhibition is also a mark into Palguna’s latest endeavor in recreating himself through a new artistic venture after a decade of existence in the world of art.

The World is My Stage
TAN LIOE IE tanlioeie@yahoo.com 08179793724
Conceptual Basics
Tan Lioe Ie is recognized as one of Indonesia’s highly esteemed poets, originating from Bali and well known for being the first Indonesian poet to explore the rituals and myths of ancient China, and presenting them through poetic form. Tan’s poetic word play is strong with ethnic influences, yet has a common allure which is easily understandable by many. Understanding that his poems would reach a much wider audience by choreographing a performance complete with various stage elements such as music, dancers and performers, he has elevated simple poetry into creative stage acts, much easier to comprehend than a simple read through.

Performances
First and foremost, Tan Lioe is a poet, and many of his verses have been printed in different media such as Bali Post, Kompas, Media Indonesia, Bonsai’s Morning, Bali The Morning, and he has released a collection of his poems in his book “Malam Cahaya Lampion“(Night of the Lamp Light). He recently performed at the Sanur Village Festival 2010 with his band Bali Puisi Musik. This year Tan also performed at Malam Puisi Bentara Budaya and Pesta Kesnian Bali 2010, all at Denpasar. He has recently released an album comprised of his poems, accompanied by Blues Rock rhythms entitled “Exorcism”.

Sounds Like Pop/Folk/Acoustic Hails From Jakarta
has Been Being the offspring of two of Indonesia’s most legendary musicians, Bonita had a lot to live up to. Bonita has returned to the limelight, now accompanied by a band, and together, they go by the name of Bonita & The Hus Band, consisting of Bonita on vocals and members Adoy (Guitar, Vocal), Bharata (Percussion, Vocal), and Jimmy Tobing (Saxophone). Mike’s
Immigrant mon 28 august - Sun 4 sept 9pm
Sound Like 90’s Pop Alternative Hail From Jakarta
have Been Formed back in 2005 by members Dendy (Vocals), Udin (Guitar, Vocals), Marko (D-Box Percussion, Vocals), and Bagus (Bass), these guys were formerly known as Mike’s Apartment, but due to an internet mishap, the band are simply known as Mike’s now, despite none of them being called Mike. With a unique spin of performing acoustic versions of hits by bands such as Radiohead, U2, Smashing Pumpkins and many others, Mike’s also tackle covers of Beatles tracks and local bands. Many of the band members have perfected their skills from previous bands they were a part of, like Dendy, who was a member of Kunci band and Udin, who was the Guitarist for Ten2Five. Walau pengunjung tidak terlalu ramai, acara yang disponsori Absolut vodka ini tepat berjalan dengan meriah. Summer tetap dapat dinikmati tanpa ombak dan pohon kelapa.
