his year’s High Season continues to throw in the odd spanner in the works, just to keep everyone on their toes. One thing that became very apparent through Ramadhan is how the nightlife sector in Bali relies so much on visitors from Jakarta. We didn’t realize to what extent till the figures came in on this year’s August, and massive drops in takings in many venues compared to last year were recorded. I think it caught a lot of people by surprise and those thousands of Jakarta party people appear to make all the difference. Meanwhile, restaurants and retail had their moments in the sun as the crowds – not as many as last year, mind you – came into town during Idul Fitri to buy up big in the downtown stores. Thankfully, it’s all over for the moment and we can get back to normal operations for a few months. The unfortunate reality is, though, that next year’s Ramadan starts on August 1st and runs through to Aug 30th. So, if anyone knows what we can do about that, please send us a letter. You may have noticed that this Beat magazine has arrived a little later than usual and we would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused. Once again, our printing was caught up in the Muslim holiday period. There is plenty on around the traps this week and Bali is as busy as ever, check the What’s On and HereNow sections inside for the full details.
The Beat Magazine is Bali and Jakarta’s entertainment gig-guide. Pick it up free at the airport, bars, restaurants, clubs, hotels and Circle K in Bali. We are an independent publication and our aim is to entertain and guide you thru the nightlife and more of Bali and Jakarta.

theSCOOP Armin Van Buuren’s Latest Track
1
Trance fans and house heads are sure to go gaga when they hear Armin Van Buuren’s new track titled “Not Giving up On Love” featuring the deep vocals of the beautiful Sophie Ellis Baxter. This is Armin’s second track which will be featured in his latest album titled “Mirage”, set to be released this month. Armin’s iconic trance mix incorporates catchy and heavy bass lines, and Sophie’s voice brings the track a slightly more mellow feel. This is a good track for new listeners of the trance genre, while you veterans will be hanging out for the full new album release. Catch the video of the new track, which was shot entirely in Ibiza, on Youtube.com.

Get ready to Rumble Ready to get into a rumble that will leave you looking better off than the other guy? This year saw the creation of a new cutting edge clothing company thanks to the minds of some local musos; Adi from The Hydrant and Komar from the 13% Outlaws put their creative minds together and soon enough, Jerinx of Superman is Dead fame joined the crack team, believing in the potency, passion and art direction that the boys were heading in. Called ‘Rumble’, the new brand concept is set to rival the capitalized fashion industry with some true Balinese blood and spirit. Considering these guys live and breathe their art and they’re all about endorsing musicians, old-school skaters, bike builders and anyone else playing it real as far as their passion goes, the hype should spread with ease. Only real humans are used in their advertising and only real humans are harmed testing their products. Out now are some hats and t-shirts to get on and there’ll be shoes and jackets to follow shortly, not to mention Rumble Girls and Rumble parties. Get rumbled at Electrohell Shop, Poppies Lane 2 or for more info call 08179751115 / 081916216538.

Sounds Like Disco, Rock, Hip Hop, Soul and Electro Hails From L.A., USA
has Been Raised by musical parents, Chris Penn AKA CPen grew up with strong musical influences from an early age. Back in the early 2000s he was already playing a strong hand in the West Coast Deep House movement, his production skills getting a good reputation for their funky bass lines and rocking melodies. These skills were sharpened with a debut solo EP “Pirate’s Life” released by Seasons recordings in 2000. The title track was licensed to Fabric’s first CD compilation with Craig Richards and soon after Chris was collaborating with JT Donaldson as well as Lance De Sardi, Angel Alanis and DJ Colette. As a DJ, CPen can be heard playing only the highest calibre house music and his roots from the early 90’s clearly shine through in his sets. From LA to Nashville to Indonesia, CPen is constantly making a name for himself behind the decks as well as on them. is Now Having moved from LA to Bali, CPen has well and truly found his groove here and is already making a solid name for himself as a DJ to get you on the dance floor. Able to adjust his sound to any occasion, be sure that he’ll pull out the right set to soundtrack your night at The Rock Bar.

Boshe Sat 18 Sept 11PM
Sounds Like House Progressive, Tech-House Hails From Jakarta
has Been Having been in the music industry for 15 years, Riri Mestica is one of the people who set the ball rolling on Indonesia’s underground electro culture. He was born and raised in Jakarta, starting his musical journey as a guitarist. At age 17, he moved to France and later to Switzerland, where he started his exploration in a small bar at Montreux. After a few years shaping his DJ techniques, he came back to Jakarta in 2000. ‘Keluar Malam’ was originally released in 2004 and it was the bridge between dance music and the production concept for his second album ‘Live Act’. This album really set another chapter marker for dance music in Indonesia, and sold around 12,000 copies under his label Spinach Records. In 2007 Riri was crowned No. 1 DJ in Indonesia’s Top Ten DJs Paranoia Award, won an award for the Best Live PA and also won the ‘local Grammy’s’ AMI Award for the Best Dance Track for ‘Fadeaway’. His ‘Stereo Mestica’ album and ‘Endless Rue’ track also won the 2007 Ravelexx Dance Music Awards. In 2008 Riri Mestica released his third album ‘Intentional’. is Now Considered to be one of Indonesia’s dance music godfathers, the name DJ Riri is synonymous with great beats, and of course a great party. With Boshe giving its all after opening recently you’re bound to be impressed when Riri takes to the stage on the 18th September. See you there...

With nearly 14 years experience, Justin’s DJ-ing talents routinely take him on tour throughout the US and to House hot-spots throughout the world. Since making his production debut in 2004, his discography reads like that of a producer who is intimately connected with the globe’s premier artists and labels. is Now Thanks to SOS we get to see what Justin has to offer the clubbers of Bali, who tend to be spoilt when it comes to living on a party island! feature Inappropriate scarf wear and why DJs get all the breaks… It was about time I treated my body to at least a glimpse of sunlight. The fluorescent tan I had been working on each night as I pushed my body into fifth gear on a stream of dance floors was beginning to become reminiscent of gecko skin and needed some serious attention. Come to think of it, I was beginning to look a lot like a gecko in too many ways. I leaned further into the mirror and checked myself with a general feeling of fear: “Have my eyes always been that big?” y self-attention was lost when a moth crashed into my cheek hoping to get closer to the light above the mirror. For some reason I was reminded of how hungry I was and decided to head out in search of food. After all, my own kitchen until now had only experienced the heating of water as its primary function, which made me wonder why I needed six square meters of space to house my kettle.

for the door. Outside was blinding. Light produced by the sun had a way of heating your skin that lasers and strobes just couldn’t achieve. My sunnies seemed to be rather ineffective at covering my oversized nocturnal eyes and so as I hit the street, I relied on the classic ten second countdown for a replacement pair… 10 – 9 – 8 – “Transport?” “Tidak Mau, no thanks!” – 5 – 4 – 3 – 2 – 1… and… “Mister, you want sunglasses?” Bingo. I figured I could have been wearing ten pairs of sunnies on my head and he still would have asked, but this time he was hitting the right guy. “Sure mate, I’ll take the biggest pair you’ve got.” Looking like a late 60’s starlet crossed with an early Star Trek being, I decided that the beach would do for a feed and some vitamin D would be a considerably healthy donation to my exterior, which was beginning to look a lot more like lizard skin by the minute. Hitting the sand, it was onto a beach chair with one hand raised to attract the attention of Mister Mie Goreng Made (otherwise known as Bruce Willis) and I was set
feature for a few hours of unwinding. A strong commitment began forming in my mind to avoid nightlife for some time and stick to a healthier regime; yes, no more late nights, go to the gym more often, learn to surf, get massive... Slowly, I drifted off into a daydream of being a champion beach bat and ball player… Then I saw her wandering up the beach. The girl that always sent me into a nervous blithering pile of nonsense yet still had me living on the hope that we were destined to be married one day. Not that we had ever spoken. I pretended not to notice her as she made her way from beach chair to beach chair, handing out flyers and smiling sweetly to everyone that attempted conversation. I even closed my eyes and acted like I was asleep when she got closer, secretly searching my brain for some sort of conversation starter that wouldn’t sound like every other guy she had encountered; something that didn’t sound too enthusiastic. PR girls must hate that. “Hallo, we have a great party tonight, you should come,” she said, approaching me. “There will be a famous DJ.” I sat up and reached out for the flyer. “Ok awesome!” I blurted out enthusiastically. Damn. “You, er.. look like you’re… hot,” I stated. Bad. She looked unsure of what I meant. “Walking on the beach I mean. Where are you from?” I asked, hoping my next question would be a large degree cooler. “My parents,” she threw back with a smirk. “Ha, yeah… nice. So you live in Bali huh, nice... What do you…. do?” “Ah, I work for a club,” she said, with a subtle, nervous glance at the flyer she had just handed me. “Oh yeah the show, tonight, of course.” Fool.“So will you be there tonight?” “Of course, the DJ is amazing, he’s famous. So maybe I see you there?”
A perfect PR smile to soften my stupidity as she moved on to the next beach chair where a perfectly cut, probably European guy was sitting reading a book, wearing only Speedos and a light silk scarf. Very inappropriate. It struck me that blatant misuse of scarfwear was becoming far too common in these parts and this seemed to be taking it to the next level. Sure, jeans, a t-shirt and a scarf on the streets of Seminyak in the middle of a blistering tropical day might be one way to advertise poetic intelligence, but sitting on the beach?! Only rock stars could get away with that kind of behavior. I had to assume he was reading a book he’d just had selfpublished on the “collected consciousness of saving children from war zones” and I had no doubt that he was impressing my future wife with his refined use of Indonesian slang. He’d certainly managed to hold her attention for long enough… Damn my gecko brain. I needed to get fit. Bruce Willis broke my train of jealous thoughts with his arrival, and as the smell of cheap noodles took my attention I diffused my hunger and took a look at the flyer. Very quickly my resolution of health was being replaced with the idea of another night out. Perhaps if I headed to the show tonight I’d have a chance to regain some level of cool and chat with my dream girl, without the likes of ‘chiseled looks Speedo-man’ to show up my daylight reptilian nature. After all, the cloak of darkness and dance floors did wonders for the ego. And there he was. Right there on the flyer. Mister “Inappropriate Scarf Wear” himself. Laid out in full color, holding the title for one of the world’s best DJs and ready to turn one of Bali’s biggest nightclubs into a ‘steaming bath of beat penetration’. “Forget the gym,” I thought. “It’s time I invested in a pair of decks and a silk scarf.” DJ Gecko had a particular ring to it... feature When you were younger, which songs in particular had a strong impact on you for their beauty and message? For me, every song is beautiful in its own way. What I always had on my mind though was an admiration for song composers. My father was an English teacher and he always embraced students to study the language in unique ways, like singing and playing guitar for the class. He created an interesting learning system, adding an artistic dose through lyrics and music and somehow he managed to introduce grammar with it. I was fed with music like ‘Yesterday’ or ‘Imagine’ from The Beatles since an early age, so I can’t really say which one is the best song, but if you ask which song I sang the most when I was a child, it had to be ‘Gunung Fujiyama’ (Mt.Fujiyama) from the age of four years old. In fact I remember begging my late grandmother to stop another kid singing that song because it was my favorite. It was hilarious how selfish I was, to not stop crying because I didn’t think another kid was allowed to sing my favorite song! First time on stage; what’s the story and glory? My first stage performance was when I was five, sometime in 1972 at a Children’s Singing Contest. I turned super nervous because I was a bit of a shy girl. I was singing parts like the interlude and chorus improperly, but it didn’t stop me from singing, I just flowed with the band, following the arrangement, and my song ended without many people knowing there were mistakes. Somehow I made it to first place and now it is an amazing memory to recall. Since then I’ve always looked forward to any contest or singing festival from a small village scale to a provincial level, even national. So we can say that you have had countless stage experiences, any more of them that really stand out? I was singing in Sumatra sometime in 1987 and I was in this hot, sexy lady rocker outfit: black tight leather pants with skull image print, hair falling down, and a tight top showing my belly. It was in a big stadium, on a big stage with good lighting and a great sound system. There were about 20,000 people there. I was halfway onto the stage and the crowd started to boo me and shout out rude phrases, saying I looked like a whore to them. Knowing that it was about the costume, I immediately went backstage and grabbed a big size jacket from one of the event organizer crew, headed back to the stage and asked the audience
072 | beatmag.com
“Is this better…?” Thank God everyone let me entertain them to the last song after that. This is a lesson for me; a singer should always consider the venue, the community sensitivity, the outfit, manners etc to really perform well… So was that the worst stage experience? Well, one time in Mataram the crowd ripped apart the stage and burned the sound system, since the show was postponed for too long beyond the schedule. The crowd couldn’t be held back while the Event Organizer was still negotiating the payment with some artists/performers. We got ourselves out from the chaos though. The EO ended up going to jail for their irresponsibility. It was terrible! Your reputation is very closely related with ethnic impressions. To what extent does it influence your life balance? Ethnic pentatonic music has always been my favorite. I was shaped by folk song competitions but by the age of 20 I was breaking that ground by being a lady rocker, adopting classic rock music from my youth. Now that I feel stronger and able to determine my choice, I’m committed to keeping it the old way. Time has passed over 30 years and now that I have become a performer, I am no longer ashamed to play my original artworks to the public. Ethnic music is my foothold to work and perform on large-scale festival stages. One of my songs is on the “Tri Kaya Parisudha” album (i.e. Good thinking, good saying, good deeds). I’m grateful for this enthusiasm for art and I’m passionate to learn to identify and explore our cultural heritage. After performing across the globe, which opportunities have truly stood out for you as amazing experiences? In 2008 I was somehow chosen by famous film director Garin Nugroho to be an actress in his film ‘Under the Tree’, which was funny because I had never had any acting experience at all. I ended up being selected as a nominee for The Best Leading Actress in FFI and I was delegated to attend the TIFF (Tokyo International Film Festival) where the film had a total of 15 nominations. At the farewell party I was asked to sing by the head of the judging panel, Jon Voight (Angelina Jolie's father), maybe it was because I was the only brown-skinned woman he could recognize! So I sang the ‘Song of the Universe’ using various sounds from glasses and anything else I could use to improvise sounds with. I

also sang a Balinese Hindu Religious Chant “Wirama Totaka” which tells a story about the moon. Any amazing collaborations in particular? At the Ubud Bali Spirit Festival in 2010, the first time I was invited to the festival. I performed with three different bands at different times (Song of the ‘Dharma’, ‘Tropical Transit’ and a foreign band ‘Susu Ibu’). All three bands wanted me to sing with my own ethnic style, called ‘kidung’ (Balinese cult singing). What I do in my kidung is to glorify Mother Nature based on meditative and spiritual elements, so I set up the stage with a meditation mood, with Lotus flowers, incense and I also dance sometimes during the song. At one point a group called ‘Ganga Giri’ from Australia asked me to join a spontaneous jam session. I wasn’t prepared for it so I didn’t approve at first. But soon after they went on stage, on the first track, I could see they were very unique & ethnical with several types of didgeridoos, African guitars, percussion, plus a techno sound, so it made me change my mind. I immediately ran to the dressing room to change my clothes with a white sari and let my hair down, put on my makeup and grabbed a white umbrella (since it was rainy season!). And there I went with my ‘Gone Traveling’ song, expressing a person walking out in the rain, getting lost and having fun. In the middle of the song appeared a spontaneous dance from I Nyoman Sura to decorate my dancing, so we combined and improved the dance on the

spot by telling the story of a traveler falling in love along the journey. At the end of the song I repeated a mantra as my thanksgiving to God, since he gave the opportunity to enjoy worldly pleasures. What is on the horizon for you now? I hope later in the month of September to release a solo album, ethnic style, after 19 years since my last recorded work. My songs are written in several languages: Kawi, Sanskrit, and Bahasa Indonesia, I will do my own production and the album will be called ‘Song Of The Universe’.

S MART
S Mart and S Café Jl Dewi Sri, Kuta Tel. 7478535
It’s more than just a convenience store. Tosca checks out S Mart’s hidden gem, S Café.
B
link and you’ll miss it. But S Mart does exist in a handy location for anyone travelling between Kuta and Seminyak - right next door to the Aston Grand Kuta hotel on Jl Dewi Sri, set back off the road with its own handy parking forecourt. As from early July of this year, S Mart has opened and is definitely worth a look. There are so many convenience stores - literally every few metres - lining Bali’s busy streets, but S Mart is more than that. It has the characteristics of a local corner shop back home, filled with high quality produce and its own bakery. Walking through the store, you’ll find the S Café towards the back; and what a lovely little surprise it is. Immaculately finished, my immediate thought was that it looked like something straight out of an 86 | | beatmag.com 086
interior design catalogue. And sure enough, this café’s décor has apparently been put together by the interior design lady from Cosmopolitan magazine – impressive! Stylish and contemporary shades of grey, black and cream have been used, and as well as the dining area, you’ll find a section filled with large comfy sofas overflowing with big, fashionably printed cushions against a backdrop of retro wallpaper and framed images of New York City. It’s an ideal spot to sit with a coffee and a book, hook up with friends or grab a working lunch using the free WiFi. The courtyard-style look, complete with plenty of greenery in the form of potted trees makes you feel almost as though you’re sitting outside, and the immensely high ceilings with their numerous fans mean you
can enjoy some respite from the Bali heat outside. Family friendly, a play area for children is provided also. I learn from a chat with GM Marc (formerly GM of Bali Deli), that S Mart is taking a more gourmet approach than certain other convenience store snack spots. Though many of the dishes are preproduced for the store and bakery (and other hotels and villas) at their own S Factory, the quality is very high, and is combined with a guaranteed speedy service. This means S Café can also be used as an easy take-out option. Another shop exists at Jimbaran and there are plans to open in Sanur and Ubud in the not too distant future also. The menu boasts something for everyone, from sandwiches (or ‘Smartwiches’) to salads and main meals. For anywhere between 15K and 25K, those who fancy having breakfast cooked by someone else for a change can base their choice on their mood: ‘Woke Up Too Early’, ‘Feeling Sporty’, ‘Still In Love’, ‘Tough Night’ or ‘I’m So Hungry’, which allows you to construct your own ideal breakfast to satisfy the a.m. hunger pangs. The choice of sandwiches is phenomenal, ranging from Classic to Bagels and Paninis. We tried the ’Lox and Bagel’ for 35K; a sesame bagel containing smoked salmon, dill, capers and lemon cream cheese, and loved the zinginess of the lemon and capers against the taste of the fish. The main meals were
equally as flavorsome and it’s clear that a lot of time has been spent creating these dishes to allow for highest quality and maximum taste as well as speed when cooking. The Duck Confit came with sautéed potatoes for a very reasonable 48K, but the tastiest dish of the evening had to be the French-inspired Veal Blanquette with Rice, which was a casserole style dish consisting of tender pieces of veal in a thick gravy – a perfect dish for when you’re missing mum’s home cooking - and all for only 38K. Add any extra sides you like from mixed greens, mashed potato, sautéed potatoes, gratin Dauphinois or sautéed mixed vegetables for an extra 15K each. To end our meal on a sweet note, we indulged in the Sweet of the Day, which was Blueberry Cheesecake, however, you can select anything you like from the bakery section for your dessert, where everything is homemade daily. Seated at the back of the room, I amuse myself watching the expressions on people’s faces as they walk in. It really isn’t what you’re expecting here, and some people look like they’ve just wandered downstairs and switched on the lights on Christmas morning! Try it for yourself next time you’re on Jl Dewi Sri. Tosca

art Passing By a Colored Space
I
n this dual exhibition, two young Balinese abstract artists, Ida Bagus Urip Candrabayu and I Wayan Setem, demonstrate the magnetic powers of pure Abstract Art with little if any stimulus from the visible world. The scenes are not stylized or disguised forms seen by the eye, but rather visions which trace their origins to internal concepts and emotions. As suggested by the title they are also exploring color in space. The passing should be perceived as a suggestion of circumambulation of a destination that will never be reached - a sort of eternal pilgrimage. Horace Bristol, Indonesia 1939 T
his exhibition focuses on the works of Horace Bristol, one of the original LIFE magazine photographers, and his first LIFE international story in 1940. Bristol came to Indonesia in the late 1930’s to photograph and document life in the then Dutch East Indies. The story became a 14-page spread in LIFE’s premier, international edition. This exhibition focuses on rural life in late 1930’s Indonesia, from traditional dance, religion and art, to textiles and farming. These images reflect traditions and practices that remain part of Indonesian culture today.

Whose Canvas Is This?
Heriawan
Siau
Concept
Learning his calligraphy basics from his father who used this classic Chinese art form as a recreational hobby, Heri had mastered the techniques from an early age. At first Heri used his calligraphy as an expressive outlet for himself, but in discovering the beauty of modern western art, he longed to combine his new passion with his already developed skills. In the mid 70’s Heri studied the works of maestro X Ling and continued his studies at Trisakti University’s Fine School of Art majoring in interior design. At the turn of the millennium, Heri veered away from his previous career as an interior designer and pursued his artistic passion, determined to exist in the world of fine art.
Exhibitions
Heriawan’s first ever joint exhibition was in ’78 with Koko Bae at Balai Budaya, Jakarta. Many years passed until Heri’s return to the art scene in 2001 in the joint exhibition titled “Pesona Kalimantan Selatan” at Hotel Kartika Chandra, Jakarta. One crowning achievement for him was being a finalist at the Indofood Art Award Exhibition in 2002. Many of Heri’s master pieces have passed through galleries around Indonesia, and caught the attention of several Chinese artisans who offered the chance for Heri to present a number of his master pieces at the Shanghai Art Fair in 2007. Starting the 7th of October you can see Heriawan’s works at Ganesha Gallery for his solo exhibition titled “Melodies in Blue”.

Annual Secret Party
A
Sampai berjumpa tahun depan !. It’s amazing how a small gathering of friends has exploded to become an annual get together of clubbers from an old school hang-out spot. This year’s gathering for the annual Secret Party was held at Domain with DJ Downey and DJ Remy ‘Judge’ Irwan spinning on the decks.
