T

he recent bout of rain may have been a letdown for those arriving in Bali for a short holiday, but for a lot of us who live here it was a nice excuse to stay indoors for some chill out time at home. Needless to say the DVD stores probably upped their sales and rocky relationships probably had a chance for some romantic mending. Things change around here pretty quickly though so we’ll soon all be prepping up for the Christmas buzz before we know it. In the meantime it’s still a good chance to enjoy a slightly quieter Bali and there’s still plenty to do out there for those whose square eyes have already rerun every episode of The Simpsons or Entourage. Check out our Whats On and HereNow sections for your day by day guideline to being entertained. There’s also a peek at some of Bali’s best sunset viewpoints in our feature section. This island has something going on for every walk of life which also makes it a great place to try something new so try not to get too caught up in the same routine, take the opportunity to try something completely new.

theSCOOP Women get Courted in Bali

For the second year the Commonwealth Bank will be sponsoring to the Commonwealth Bank Tournament of Champions in Bali. The tournament will be held from the 4th to 7th of November at the Westin Resort Nusa Dua and will feature top Tour players and next generation champions competing for $600,000 in prize money. Competitors will only have one opportunity to advance to the semi-finals in an all-or-nothing knockout tournament. Only the top eight players who have captured at least one International Series tournament during the year and who are not participating in the singles at the year-end Sony Ericsson Championships at Doha 2010 will qualify for the event. Be sure not to miss Indonesia’s premiere tennis competition, featuring the world’s best women’s tennis players. For more information, visit www.commbanktennis.com

Bali’s Spring Cleaning On the 20th of September, a total of 31 non-Government organizations got down and dirty cleaning up 19 spots around the island of Bali, reaching from the most northern tip of the island down to the southern point. It was a much needed sweep up as education is still needed in keeping Bali a beautiful island void of human scraps and garbage. Loads of trash was collected though, mainly consisting of plastics that have been recklessly discarded by ignorant people. Hopefully we’re all able to head towards a cleaner Bali as more people realize the importance of keeping the environment free of waste that cannot break down naturally. Nunie from the Rotary Club in Nusa Dua said: “We need to return the island to its once clean and serene state,” and also said that the event was part of a larger campaign which would also introduce organic waste tanks. “A simple way to manage our waste.”

theSCOOP Top of the Rocks Winning the Best New Venue category at this year’s The Beat Awards can already be considered a crowning achievement (yeah baby), but Rock Bar upped its ante once again by topping CNN’s list of the world’s 30 best hotel bars. A minimalistic space designed by Yasuhiro Koichi of Japan’s Design Studio SPIN, a splendorous view of the Indian Ocean and a great selection of cocktails all added up to the Rock Bar reaching the coveted spot. If you’re yet to get yourself to this supreme sunset and after hours location, make sure you make the time soon.

Avril Lavigne’s New Album Is Coming It has been over two years since Avril Lavigne released her smash hit album ‘The Best Damn Thing’, but the long wait for new material may soon be over. Avril has confirmed that a new, as yet untitled album, which was first scheduled to be released in June, has been pushed back but will be due in stores before the end of the year. Avril says the music on the new album is a shift from the frenetic energy of ‘The Best Damn Thing’. Instead, the songs are much more focused on the kind of emotions that impressed her young fans, particularly the female crowd, in her first two albums. The tracks are mainly acoustic, but are significantly strengthened by Avril’s iconic vocals. She says the sound will be a lot different from anything she has done before. Check out a clip of Avril currently busy in the studio working on the new album at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SaO_cYzeZ6o.

The Cuban Brothers MbarGo friday 8 oct 10PM

Getting sick of DJ’s and performers that take themselves way too seriously? Say hello to The Cuban Brothers. With a stack of talent on the DJing, dancing and live music front, these guys know how to turn it all into a joke worth listening to. The Beat chewed the fat before showtime at MbarGo‌

onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic So for the sake of introductions, you are… MiMiguel Mantovani, Cuban Brother number one, B-boy, MC, singer and nakedsmith extraordinaire. I’ve noticed that looking at many of your promo pics, there appears to be four members in the Cuban Brothers, yet your biography only speaks of three. Is this because the fourth member is being punished with the silent treatment for dancing out of step or is he simply one of your imaginary friends that only I can see? No my big brother Clemente retired in January of this year as he is an old bastard. Give us a quick rundown on your backgrounds, including past lives and previous convictions… My young nephew Archerio was chief dancer for the Prodigy with his crew The Floor Freaks, he was also a street kid when I met him, dancing on the corner for change until I inducted him to sweat beneath me at the Habanero School of Performing Arse. This is where I taught him everything I know about showbiz, lovemaking and nose whiskey. My son Kengo-san, I did not even know existed until 10 years ago when he turned up on my doorstep, claiming to be my son that I fathered during a trip to Osaka in 1980 after just retiring from the pornography business, where as you know, I made 111 films, 90 of which I produced myself; the most famous being Juan Bondito, 0069 in Brownfinger. Kengo is also a graduate of my performing arse school and has just won the World Radio Festival’s number 1 DJ for the second time (the little bastard). On a more serious note, when you first performed your comedic act as the Cuban Brothers were you seriously looking at a long term gig or was it just a joke at the time that got serious? Seriously… When I started the Cubans, it was me reacting against a bit of a chin stroking vibe that was prevalent in dance music in the mid 90’s. I wanted to inject some fun and performance into the nights I was promoting and DJ’ing at, and playing the character of Miguel was a light hearted, if not a little naughty way of getting the party started and celebrating with a bit of hysteria, great hip hop/soul/funk music and some dope dancing. In that sense I would always have performed in this capacity regardless of success. Describe your first performance and what it involved; how has it evolved and how does your current show compare?

046 | beatmag.com

The first performance was just me, a set of 12 10’s turntables, congas, bongos and timbales. I would DJ, MC and accompany myself on percussion, tell some stories and show off a little too much. Nowadays, it’s a show off competition between myself and Los Hermanos, Kengo and Archerio, whether it be dancing singing or facialising. We are there to entertain and get down. How much improvisation takes place when you guys hit the stage, compared to what’s rehearsed? We don’t rehearse. There is obviously a bit of a formula to the show but with any live performance anything can happen at any time and usually does. What suggestions would you give to those of us out there that wish to reach our peak physical condition, whilst also maintaining a well balanced tan line, perfect hairdos and remarkably sharp dress sense as the three (plus imaginary guy) of you do so well? Come to Miguel’s School of Pumping, one of my 3 schools in Havana, Buenos Aires and Zurich to learn how to get the skills to be a lothario, and with male fitness and grooming. Which part of the group is the Cuban part and which part of you are brothers? Use your imagination mi hermano! What have been some unexpected highlights for you since you’ve been hitting festivals and music shows as both performers and hosts? Touring six shows supporting the Godfather of Soul James Brown, touring with Talib Kweli, De La Soul, Q-Tip. Performing for Elton John at his place in the south of France, spending 10 days in the original Kit car from Knightrider with David Hasselhoff on the Gumball last year, narrating a film with Burt Reynolds - just some of the unexpected joys of being a Cuban Bro. If you guys could add anyone to your stage show from past, present or future, who would it be and what role would they play? The Holy Trinity of Black Music - James Brown, Michael Jackson and Prince. If they were sharing the stage with us in any capacity, they could do whatever the funk they like! Best thing to come out of 2010 so far? My new daughter Luccia Rose! My seed is strong! The brand new album ‘The CB’S - Yo Bonita’, finished but not

c. onthemic. onthe

hereNOW released until February 2011. My film ‘Long Way to the Top’, a comedy about one of my other characters Barry Peters on a pilgrimage to Bon Scot’s grave travelling across Australia. Worst experience as a group? Feel free to be honest, think of this as your special place to let go… Playing to a bunch of middle aged, middle management advertisement executives in Warsaw, Poland in 2006. They were expecting some 80’s Polish pop star, and they got us... I finished by doing naked body slides to the sound of one very camp Polish man whooping and clapping while the rest looked on confused and generally unimpressed. Our driver who was exmilitary then proceeded to drink 2 liters of vodka in our dressing room, before vomiting and passing out. He was then berated by the promoter while he lay there unconscious! Best joke that can be translated on paper in an interview without using your hands? What do you call cheese that is not yours? Nacho cheese (I don’t really do jokes, I do stories using my hands and other appendages).

What sort of impression do people in the UK have of Bali? What are your expectations? Exotic, fun and hot! I used to live in Lombok in 1993 so I know Bali and its sister island very well and love the people and the place. Outside of performing and waking up in the monkey forest wearing only an MBargo stamp and the smell of arak, what are you looking forward to when you get here? Surfing, Bintang and dancing. What can we expect to see, hear and smell at your MbarGo show? All of the above rolled into the greatest show on earth. Any further comments that can and will be used against you in a court of law? So glad to be coming back to Bali. On a previous trip, our six days here, chilling after our Australian tour and making our film, were the most fun-filled and relaxing we have had in 12 years of performing together.

Get funked up with The Cuban Brothers at MbarGo on Friday night, October 8th and be prepared to get nasty on the dance floor.

Sounds Like House / Dance / Funky House Hails From UK

HAS BEEN Aydin Hasirci, aka ATFC (or, Aydin The Funki Chile), has been on the house scene for years, and could be considered a worthy addition to the list of house music ‘Old Skoolers’. Producing records and commanding dance floors has earned him many an accolade over the years, including most recently the Beatport House Artist of the Year 2009; 3 UK Top 40 hits including ‘Bad Habit’ and ‘In Out of My Life’; a slot on the airwaves for BBC Radio 1’s Essential Mix; residencies at the likes of Pacha Ibiza for Defected, and the attentions of artists such as Moby, Missy Elliot, P Diddy and Norman Cook, aka Fat Boy Slim. 2008/9 saw him mixing Defected Miami’s compilation CD and collaborating with artists like Dubfire, whose track ‘Roadkill’ was remixed by Aydin and described as “verging on genius” by fellow veteran British DJ, Pete Tong. IS NOW ATFC toured Australia and Asia recently with huge success, and he’s heading back this way to play at Hu’u on the 9th Oct for ‘The Essential’ event. With credentials like this, we think its essential to clear our diaries and make it to Hu’u, to see this master at work. Don’t miss it.

Sounds Like Trance Hails From Ireland

HAS BEEN John O’Callaghan very quickly moved from a hit prediction to a recognized world class heavy weight on the Trance scene, moving up the DJ Magazine’s Top 100 poll with ease thanks to his high octane sets, highly refined mixing style and major gigs such as spinning his first Radio 1 Essential Mix in the summer of 2008. Ireland recognized his talent, awarding him the Best Producer and Best DJ trophies at the Irish Dance Music Awards for two years running and by 2009 he had landed on his feet with success in Ibiza. His production skills have earned accolades from the likes of Paul Van Dyk who claimed John to be “One of the most exciting producers in the world today” and with hits like Big Sky hitting the charts and being voted the number one trance tune shortly after, it was a good call. Under various other pseudonyms, John also produces other more techno-fringed styles and there are plenty of DJ’s out there who support his releases in their own sets… IS NOW Now with his own label ‘Subculture’ to launch his tracks, a jam packed diary of that keeps him busy both internationally and with highly coveted resident positions in slots like the Godskitchen 2010 Global Gathering World Tour, along with mixing and production work for the best of them, you could say that things are going well for this late twenties DJ. Most recently landing the number 24 position for DJ Mags Top 100 DJ’s, he is now heading to Bali so get to Oceans 27 and find out why the rest of the world is so impressed with this Trance legend…

Laughter Lines

H Harry Juko Wednesday 15 September

arry Juko hosted a night of laughter along with the Jakarta Comedy Club, bringing some international comedians down to Bali as part of their international tour. Bali’s own expat McDennis McSweeney got the night off to a start, cracking the right ribs and poking a few others with some dark humor before Chris Martin (not of Coldplay fame!) took to the stage. In from the UK, he pulled out a mix of observations that kept the room laughing along, though it was Ted Alexandro who stepped up the punch lines. In from the US, his cool confidence rolled out a string of stories that bounced between hilarious predicaments and lines that only comedians are allowed to cross. Keep your ears posted for the next comedy night and book yourself a table…

ard Rock Café was hit with the French masses last Friday night, arriving to bask in the legendary awesomeness of their homeland rocker hero, Louis Bertignac. Louis brought an air of nostalgia to the crowd as he ran through a bunch of his classic hits, well known to all those present. Closing off the night, he was accompanied by Indonesian guitarist Piyu from Padi and together they jammed out on some Jimi Hendrix. Louis still knows how to rock a crowd and he didn’t hold back for this committed bunch.

As the Sun Sets…

Being on the West you’re on the right side of the island when it comes to watching the sun sink into the ocean, so why not watch the show from a perfect location? Here are a few spots well worth visiting at the end of the day…

1. Rock Bar

Quickly becoming one of the most talked about bars on the island, The Rock Bar slid onto the sunset scene last year and stole the show with its incredible location. At the base of a cliff and seeming to hover just out of reach of the crashing ocean waves, it boasts a beautiful view out to sea and further around the coastline, making it a perfect sunset spot and well worth the drive out through the Jimbaran area. There’s a huge selection of cocktails available along with light food and if you’re after a meal, being part of the Ayana resort means there are restaurants available to move on to also. Due to the popularity of this spot though, don’t be surprised if it’s packed out when you get there so be prepared to wait your turn for the inclinator! The way the Rock Bar is lit up at night is also well worth checking out so if you’ve missed sunset, you still won’t be disappointed...

1 2. Klapa

2 070 | beatmag.com

If you’d prefer to be further up the cliff face, Klapa is the place to be. In a beautiful area of rolling hills, white sandy beaches and beautiful turquoisecolored water with perfect surf, this is a great spot to watch the sun sink into the ocean as you sip away at a cocktail from one of the bars, the large outdoor area or the infinity edged pool. You’ll feel like a million dollars wherever you choose to kick back. Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights see home bands and DJ’s giving the place a smooth soundtrack to suit the occasion and there are plenty of big events to keep your ears posted for.

3 3. Envy

3

Head down to Holiday Inn Baruna Resort and you’ll find this fantastic restaurant right on the beach and open to the public. Open from 11am ‘til midnight, there’s plenty of time to stop by for some food and an ocean view but the magic moment is definitely as the fiery ball weighs heavy in the sky. Resident DJ’s Nanda and Buche get their grooves into play from 5:30 daily except for Tuesday which sees an acoustic show by live band Cakrawala Akustik. This is also a great place to bring the kids as you can supervise them on the sand while you relax at one of the outdoor tables.

4 4. Double Six Beach

If you want to stick to the Seminyak area and feel the vibe of a beach busy with locals and tourists alike, head down to Double Six beach and grab yourself a chair to laze back in. The beach is packed with vendors selling drinks and food and there are plenty of restaurants behind the beach to widen your options. There are also plenty of activities available such as surfboard hire if you feel like being active. Otherwise ‘people watching’ is generally the chosen sport. You may get hassled to buy jewelry or sunglasses a little more than you like but it comes with the territory. For something slightly quieter, head to the left for the same views at the Padma section of the beach.

Movie Gunfights

10

ofthe

Best: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (The Final Charge) Newman and Redford play notorious robbers Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and are on the run, ending up in a climactic fatal gun battle with the Bolivian police. Mr and Mrs Smith (Domestic Violence on Steroids) In a bout of domestic violence gone turbo, Pitt and Jolie are secret assassins, who attempt to blow each other’s pretty little heads off, destroying their marital home in the process. Scarface (Tony’s Last Stand) The end of the classic Scarface shows Tony Montana fighting his enemies to the bitter end in an inhuman display of how many bullets one man can take. Just when you think he’s killed them all, another 20 or so appear and the guns are blazing again. Al Pacino = hard as nails. Equilibrium (The Puppy Guardian) Christian Bale shows his soft and hard sides simultaneously, when protecting a pup from an army responsible for destroying all emotional humans and emotive catalysts. To say they get their asses kicked for their troubles is an understatement. Heat (Police Street Shoot-Out) Al Pacino stars alongside Hollywood contemporary, Robert DeNiro in this police shoot out scene. Perfectly choreographed, perfectly executed and ultimately gripping. It’d be hard to find a contender to match this one.

072 | beatmag.com

The International (The Guggenheim Scene) Clive Owen is an Interpol agent, investigating a corrupt bank in Europe. The movie receives a swift kick up the backside when the steady plot takes them to New York and explodes into gunfight action in the Guggenheim museum The Matrix (The Lobby Scene) Ahead of its time, this scene combines amazing SFX, a gritty soundtrack song (provided by The Propellerheads – ‘Spybreak’), and the uber-coolness of Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Ann Moss, rockin’ the leather and shades. The Good, The Bad & The Ugly (The Mexican Stand-Off) A good 4 out of the 5 minutes that this scene takes is devoted to building the unbearable tension before the guns go off. Featuring a shedload of closeups of Clint Eastwood and his adversaries’ twitchy trigger fingers, this Mexican stand-off became one of the all-time greatest showdowns of the Western genre and cinema in general. Tombstone (Gunfight at the OK Corral) Based on the true story of retired law enforcer Wyatt Earp, the gunfight at the OK Corral kicks off when he can no longer take the trouble caused by cattle thieves, The Clanton Gang. A prolific fight scene ensues; another exercise in superlative Western tension and gun-slinging. Face Off (The Mirror Scene) Cage and Travolta square up in a final stand that’s the classic image from this film: both men standing on either side of a mirror, each wearing the others’ transplanted face, and ready to blow a hole in it.

Discovery Shopping Mall MG 47 | Jl Kartika Plaza | Kuta Beach | Tel. 769822

From Frank Sinatra to Jay Z and Alicia Keys, everybody has something to say about the city that never sleeps. But what would Bali’s take on the Big Apple be like? Tosca headed to the Discovery Shopping Mall to find out…

O

pening its doors on April 16th of this year, the New York Sports Bar and Diner couldn’t have chosen a more optimum time to kick things off, due to the onslaught of football fans (or ‘soccer’ fans, for any non-British readers out there) that overtook Bali’s bars this summer, all hunting for the biggest screen and the coldest beverage. With a Mudslide Milkshake in my mitts (25K), made from chocolate ice cream, syrup, fresh cream and Oreo Cookies no less, I sit in a red leather booth surrounded by an array of sporting memorabilia and the sweaty, determined faces of legends such as Babe Ruth and the Manchester United squad. The booth seats seem so American to somebody who has never set foot in the country, and whether

086 | beatmag.com

it’s like this there in reality or not, I’m quite caught up in the novelty of it all. Having said that, there is nothing ‘novelty’ or superficial about the bar itself. It’s been finished to a very high standard, and has achieved the balance between themed sports bar and something classier rather well. It really is heaven for somebody who wants some quality food in a cool, comfortable environment and to take in some serious sporting action. Because you’re never going to miss a second of the action in this place. If you haven’t parked yourself in front of one of the pull-down big screens for special events such as the World Cup games, then practically every other seat in the house has a flat screen TV mounted on the wall nearby. Running low on your beer? Not a problem – keep watching on one of the three TVs behind the bar.

I arrived here shortly before sunset, and was surprised to see that NYSBD is a massive missed opportunity for sunset-worshippers. A spacious outdoor seating area, just down from sister venue Oceans 27, overlooks Kuta Beach at the southern end and is a prime location to catch the last oranges, pinks and purples of the day. Including this outdoor area, the seating capacity here is 150, making it a great place for a function of any kind.

grilled meat, is bacon, mushrooms, lettuce, tomato, pickles and onion, with sides of fries, coleslaw and lightly battered onion rings. And it tastes gooood. Turning my attention to the Chile con Carne, I find that once again, Rio was right. It doesn’t taste the same as your run-of-the-mill Chile – it has a real kick, packed with extra fruity heat, and is served with every Mexican topping you can think

Perusing the menu, I see all kinds of snack and tapas style foods – the perfect accompaniments for watching the sport on screen, which ranges from the everyday (rugby) to the bizarre (arm wrestling). Remarking on this to Chef Rio Nadjamuddin, I point out that I wasn’t aware armwrestling was popular enough to be televised, and I’m told that arm wrestling, along with yoyo competitions and hot-dog eating contests are all going to be adding to the competitive nature of the bar in the not-too-distant future, when participants can win prizes, and, I imagine, provide some pretty funny free entertainment for the other patrons. My conversation with Rio then turns to the food. Rio provides a splash of authenticity to the cuisine here, as although Borneo-born, he spent several years living in New York and working as a cook there. And although the menu features many things you can find elsewhere, such as burgers, pork ribs and pies, he warns me not to expect the norm… everything here is homemade. And when Rio says “everything”, he really means everything. From the burger patties and desserts, right down to the bread used for the burger buns, it’s all done in-house. Impressive. of, such as cheese, guacamole, salsa, sour cream and nachos. Luckily for me, our Beat photographer Tempted by the Build Your Own Burger option, doesn’t seem to possess a single sweet tooth, so we eventually opt for the New York Burger it’s up to me to polish off the homemade Key Lime instead (52K) and the Chile Con Carne (65K), Pie, which is zesty and refreshing on the palette, followed by Key Lime Pie (20K). T

his collection of ceramic sculptures and sculptural paintings represent relic objects and images of a “dreaming” in an aboriginal sense, depicting a figurative dance, story or physicality, which is inherited and accumulated through a lifetime. For artist and nomad Hillary Kane, the world continues to draw her out like the tide, and through work and travel she has gained artistic, cultural influences, which she incorporates into her works. Currently residing in Bali, Hillary focuses her creativity in both clay and paint, adoring the dynamics of these two very different mediums and their possible confluences. The works featured in this exhibition approach geology: not only in the vigorous process of their making, but also in the metaphoric methods that stratify dimensions, eroded surfaces and fractured facades, suggesting in the process, our own individuality. his exhibition features works which have been influenced by the low-brow art style, originating from the urbanscapes of the world, yet conjuring up a different spirit to the modern art which is known to many. The works of art featured in this exhibition have been completed by five young aspiring artists who were all a part of Apotik Comic Group in 2002 at Yogyakarta, who now decorate Yogyakarta’s cityscape in artistic splendor. Through this exhibition, the artists involved hope to represent the young Indonesian take on traditional street art, which has intertwined into a surreal pop art form. Date : Venue : Telp : Web :

Concept

Youth is not always wasted on the young as these five artists have proven through their various unique art forms. Comprising their works using modern techniques inspired by today’s modern media formats, Agus Yulianto, Arie Dyanto, Darbotz, Iwan Effendi and Farid Stevy unite together to present their interpretation of Indonesia’s pop surrealist movement.

100 | beatmag.com

Farid Stevy Asta

As one of the most acknowledged artists of the group, Agus Yulianto has been showcasing his works since 1997 and has won the Nyoman Gunarsa Prize for Graphic Art Work at ISI Yogyakarta in 2005. Born and raised in Yogyakarta, Arie Dyanto is relatively fresh on the scene and has been exhibiting his work to the public since 2007. With the name Darbotz you would think him more of a DJ than an artist but his artistic designs have graced t-shirts plus toys and only recently has he been exhibiting his designs. Iwan Effendi can be seen as the most traveled of the group with his last group exhibition being held at Charmingwall Gallery in New York. Still new to the art scene is Farid Stevy whose first exhibition was back in 2006. All five are currently exhibiting their works at Kendra Gallery.
