ali has been very busy lately, more so than just about ever, and I’m not just talking about the crowds of people you see all over the place, the streets and venues, but the amount of events and festivals going on. From the Ubud Writers Festival, the Balinale Film Festival and the Nusa Dua Festival, not to mention the local chapter of the APPMI Fashion Designers Fashion Show last week in Nusa Dua, it has been hard to keep up with it. But somehow we managed to get along to most of these events and you will be able to read about it inside these pages.
The Beat Magazine is Bali and Jakarta’s entertainment gig-guide. Pick it up free at the airport, bars, restaurants, clubs, hotels and Circle K in Bali. We are an independent publication and our aim is to entertain and guide you thru the nightlife and more of Bali and Jakarta.

Tonight, Friday Oct 29, we or better said 98.5fm The Beat Radio Plus is holding a small party with Kudeta and Erdinger Beer at Kudeta’s KUVE upstairs restaurant space. It’s small because that space only holds a few hundred, so if you are interested in joining 98.5fm The Beat Radio Plus fraternity and listeners for a night’s entertainment with DJ Mamsa – one of the founders and chief programmer of 98.5fm, you had better get there early and you may even get a free Erdinger. Starts at 11pm. We are proud to be part of it. Another thing we are proud to be part of is the launching of The Beat Daily this week. We are now effectively a news portal via our website and a daily news and entertainment update newsletter being sent out to our subscriber base. It’s exciting and it’s free - all the freshest info from around town every day to your inbox. Subscribe by going to www.beatmag.com. It’s Halloween this weekend. The Living End Hail From Australia
Boshe Sat 30 Oct 10pm
Sound Like Punk Rock, Alternate Rock, Punkabilly
Have Been Formed back in ’94, The Living End made huge waves in Australia and beyond when their double A Side ‘Second Solution’ / ‘Prisoner of Society’ became the highest selling single of the 90’s and scored them an Australian Record Industry Award; it lasted a whopping 47 weeks on the ARIA Top 50 Singles Chart. Originally a covers band on the Melbourne rockabilly scene, the boys have since found themselves moving from local tours to huge international runs with massive live shows and guest spots on the likes of David Letterman and Conan O’Brien. There have been five studio releases and one singles compilation in Australia, with two hitting the number one spot on the Aus Album Charts. are Now Currently holding the position of the third highest-selling rock album in Australian music history, this trio of dedicated musicians have learned a thing or two about what it takes to stay on top, despite a few line-up changeovers in the drummer department. They’ve got a sixth album in the pipeline and if you haven’t caught the energy of a Living End concert before, you’re missing out on a serious injection of stage tearing antics, high velocity charisma and stomping high speed riffs. Boshe has quickly proved itself to be a venue fit for the big shows, so make sure you get your ticket in hand before they sell out.

Has Been A new and aspiring starlet currently making waves on Bali’s DJ circuit is Danzdy Asla. Her time as a resident gave her the opportunity to share the decks with local DJ legends such as DJ Soma, Leon Shady and Kent Kryptonite. Always evolving and seeking to improve her skills, Danzdy moved on to join Elite Sounds Bali in 2009 and to lose the ‘FDJ’ persona by changing her name to Danzdy Asla. Is Now Still in an effort to lose her old FDJ persona, Danzdy Alsa is now combining her beauty and new found turntable mixing skills, to present a more alluring stage performance. Sound Like Underground Metal Hail From Bandung
Have Been The boys of Burgerkill all originate from Bandung, West Java and since 1995 have been continually shaping the underground metal scene in Indonesia. For 14 years Burgerkill have consistently been in the spotlight as a force to be reckoned with in Indonesian metal, from writing compositions for movie soundtracks to the successful publication of autobiographic novels. Their first album, ‘Dua Sisi’, demonstrated the band’s beginnings leaning towards a predominantly ‘Hardcore Metal’ and was well received within the underground metal community. With the band’s second album ‘Berkarat’ and their most recent ‘Beyond Coma and Despair’ Burgerkill have found their foot-hole and developed a style of their own. are Now Burgerkill will be thrashing on the stage of Centerstage, Hard Rock Hotel this Halloween along with Navicula for a thrilling, spine tingling Sunday night. Instead of the usual guitar thrashing and voice howling, the two bands will be toning things down a little for an on stage acoustic session.
DJ Wen’d Sounds Like Electro Progressive
oceans 27 Sat 30 Oct 11PM
Hails From Jakarta
Has Been With no professional trainer to teach him the ropes, DJ Wen’d picked up the skills to spin on the decks all by himself. Mainly playing in the realms of electro and progressive beats, Wen’D has proved that he is a force to be reckoned with, making it to the top 12 at Heineken Thirst Studio in 2006, after just under a year of picking up the skills. In 2007 he tried again in the Heineken Thirst Senses, making it as one of the finalists. Even though he’s still considered a newbie on the decks, Wen’d has been lucky to share the stage with international DJs such as Trentemoller, Starkillers a.k.a Nick Terranova and Benjamin Bates. Is Now His musical style, performance and techniques differentiate Wen’d from other DJs who play the same genres. Seringai
Rip Curl Music Festival Kuta Beach 13-14 Nov
Seringai have spent ten strong years shredding the mainstream music culture in half, with ball tearing live sets and studio releases that have earned them a huge cult following. We caught up with frontman Arian and bass player Sammy before they turned their amps up in Bali… How would you define your sound now and has it changed over the years since you first got together? Arian - We [still] play heavy rock music, a mix between rock and heavy metal with a touch of hardcore punk. Black Sabbath meets Motorhead meets Motley Crue meets Black Flag, if you will. We’ve progressed over the years, it shows in our new music arrangements; more complicated, but not complicated for your hearing if you are already a rock fan! Does anyone in the band have other side projects or work that keeps them busy outside of Seringai? Arian - Me, Sammy and Khemod have a one-time project called The Rocky Balboa Trio. More like performance art, we collaborate with a Philippine performance art artist, Yason Banal, in one show at the National monument. I’m also trying to do something else with Eben from Burgerkill, like a grindcore/power violence band. I also
042 | beatmag.com
talked a bit with Adam from Kubik/Koil, to do a dark folk project. We’ll see. Sammy - Yes. I’m a radio announcer in Jakarta, a commercial v.o talent, a music merchandise shop owner, and a father. So my life outside the band is pretty occupied! Where have you found the most amount of support across Indonesia? Arian - Mostly big cities, and there’s quite a lot from unknown cities, which amazes me. It has to do with our album’s distribution though, which is mostly distributed in big cities, then it starts to spread to secondary cities and small cities. Sammy - They even create their own fan pages in Facebook. Some of them managed to make events and they’ve brought Seringai to play in their city.

onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic What sort of a message do you like to push with your music? Arian - Anything, basically. What’s happening with the social life in Indonesia today. We’re not a political band, but we do have political messages. Sammy - I guess we’re trying to be one of those bands that inspire people through their music and lyrics, as an alternative to today’s Indonesian ‘mellow’ music scene. What have been some of your favorite shows so far? Sammy - One time when we went to Medan, we jampacked this cafe/bar. The capacity was around 500-600 people (standing), and about 1000 people showed up! We had to cut out 2 songs because we couldn’t even breathe. It’s now been a while since you first released High Octane Rock, which sold over 15,000 copies as a cassette and earned you a huge amount of fans. Now that you are living in a world of illegal downloads, have you noticed a difference in how many albums you sell, despite still having a growing fan base? Sammy - Yes. But stopping piracy in Indonesia is like stopping a tsunami. It’s unstoppable. So we might as well accept it. We even officially released some singles to be downloaded free of charge in several websites. We would lose in the battle of sales, but as more people download our songs and start to listen to them, we get more gigs and more money. But we also did what we could to create a healthier market by releasing a more collectable album so that people wouldn’t buy the fake one.We once released a box set album with free stickers, postcards, posters and other bonus materials. It was sold out. All 2500 of them. In the past, touring was a way to promote an album and help to increase sales; is this still the case or do you think it has turned vice versa due to music piracy? Arian - Honestly, we’ve never toured extensively, since we all have day jobs. So it’s always like a weekend short tour, then go back to work. Never like a month full of tours. I’d like to do that, though, it’s one of my dreams. Sammy - For us, touring is not only for promoting our new album, but to get more people to come and see us play. In 2008, your t-shirt design named ‘Badge’ which depicted a freaky looking cop with a bloodied baton was responded to quite harshly by the police force. Police even began arresting fans who were seen in them on the street. What was your motivation for this release and
how do you feel about the outcome? Arian - The motivation is to get people arrested! Haha! Of course not. It was merely our statement about the police, but then they were offended. I mean, we’re not insulting the police force, but giving them a critique, yes. At the back of the shirt there’s this police force slogan,‘to serve and protect who?’ Guess it got on their nerves. Sammy - Arian and I had to go to Bandung for an interrogation. We just had to outsmart them in the argumentation to get away. Authorities just cannot take any critique here. It was an artwork based on a song that we wrote about police officers. It was just a reminder to people that we still have dysfunctional and corrupt authorities. We felt bad for the victims. Up until now, the t-shirts have sold out every time we reprint them. Do you see the Indonesian music industry as a place that supports all styles of music, including metal and hardcore, or is it a battle for many bands to be heard if they don’t fit into a certain mold? Arian - No. It’s a battle for rock bands; it’s a battle for bands that want to be different than the mainstream. I never said that being independent is easy. There’s so much work to do, but if you work hard, you will earn it. Sammy - When the media is not giving alternatives to society, the market is not going to have variety either. We are lucky enough to have a pretty good underground scene to keep the music and spirit alive. So what is in the pipeline for you guys at the moment? What can Serigala Seringai (Seringai’s wolfpack - fanbase) look forward to in the near future? Arian - We’re working on a new album now, so we look forward to that! Sammy – It’s probably going to be out in March 2011. We also released our first documentary DVD several months ago, and it’s still available in music stores. Have you got any brand new tunes that will be thrashed out at the Rip Curl festival? Arian - Of course! It will crush people for sure! We have “Program Party Seringai”, “Dilarang Di Bandung”, “Censorshit”, and others. I’m excited to play these new songs in Bali! Any last words? Arian - I’ll see you all at the Rip Curl Festival, let’s make it a real party and bring all of your female friends in bikinis; and don’t hesitate to buy us a beer or two! Sammy - See you at the pit!
Rip Curl Festivals are generally renowned for having plenty of watts in the speaker department so if there’s anywhere you want to see Seringai blast out their message, it’s down on Kuta beach on the 13th and 14th of November. See you in the mosh. beatmag.com | 043

I Am Giant
W
Hard Rock Café Sat 6 Nov 10pm
ith a combined history of supporting acts like Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Muse, Snow Patrol and Linkin Park to audiences of up to 70,000 people, you could say that these boys were familiar with a stage or two before getting together in the UK to form their current outfit, I Am Giant. Success in the past doesn’t always guarantee acceptance in the future though, as Shelton Woolright & Paul Matthews soon found out. Despite triple-platinum album sales in previous bands, a move from New Zealand to London with the aim of starting a new project still saw them starting at ground zero and working hard to find new band members and industry respect. Fortunately for them, the new project rocked. Now with a world of touring under their belts and a cargo load of respect for their sound, they’re heading to Bali to show us the good news. We caught up with Shelton and Paul before they jumped the plane… 044 | beatmag.com
onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. ont What was it that first encouraged the two of you to make the move from New Zealand to the UK? Paul - Well we wanted to get involved in the international music market, which is largely being driven from the US and the UK, and it was a numbers game. Selling heavy alt rock to a population of 4 million (NZ population) is never gonna cover one’s expenses quite as comfortably as selling it to a population of 80 mil or 350 mil and at the end of the day, we all just want to be able to cover the bills and do what we love. Was there anything lined up for you there before you jumped ship? Paul - Not even remotely. We came over here knowing nobody and had to start over from scratch. Even with the experience we had, there were a lot of closed doors. How did the final line-up come together in the end? Shelton – Paul and I painstakingly auditioned 160 singers, flyering every street corner and every studio in London until we found Ed. We also tried close to 120 guitarists before settling with Max, however when that didn’t work out we enlisted our good friend Aja. He seemed a natural fit having played with myself in Blindspott and Paul in Stylus. So here we are, very solid and very excited to take on Indonesia. Are any of you still involved in other projects? Shelton - Aside from Paul and I producing other artists from time to time, no. I don’t think at this point in our career it would be possible to have any other projects. I think I Am Giant is the continuation of all of our past bands. It feels very right to be where we are and doing what we are doing with this band. Is the creative process a group effort or is there a dominant songwriter amongst you? Paul - Usually Shelton and I write the music and Ed writes vocal parts to which I generally write the lyrics. But sometimes ideas come from all over the place and we just have a policy of using the best ideas available regardless of their origins. Your music has had immediate success within the extreme sports world, getting plenty of sponsorship deals, becoming ambassadors for Quiksilver and adding sound to a stack of sports videos. Was this a case of the sports world being fans first or did you write and promote with an intention to get involved in this industry? Paul - The extreme sports community came to us, and in particular Quiksilver Europe decided that we were the sound to complement their amazing videos of the world’s best snowboarders, surfers and skaters. But we
love the relationship and it means we get more time on the slopes and at the beach, and who wouldn’t want that! Beyond stage dives and encouraging mosh pits to frenzy out, are the four of you into any adrenaline pumping sports yourselves? Shelton – I’ve been heavily into snowboarding for a long time now, it’s my other passion outside of playing my drums. I think it’s safe to say snowboarding is definitely the band’s favorite extreme sport, but yes we love all sports involving breaking bones. We were lucky enough to spend a week on the slopes a few months back in NZ for the Queenstown Winter festival, and just arrived back in London from the Quiksilver Pro in France. The waves were a bit above our surfing skills but hopefully we’ll have more luck at Kuta, when we are there for the Quiksilver Bali pro. Is there a particular message the band hopes to deliver to its fans through both music and lyrical content? Yeah definitely. Every song is a different story or collection of thoughts and philosophies that are an extension of our lives and experiences at that particular moment in time. And hopefully people will connect with this with whatever is happening in their hearts and minds at the time. Where have you had the best response so far to your live shows? Shelton - The UK has been great to us since day one, selling out our first show. But we can’t deny the overwhelming response we get from NZ whenever we tour. Our first taste of the Asian crowds were when we played Vietnam earlier this year. They were awesome however I’m excited to get back to Indo having toured quite extensively with t. If my memory serves me well NZ have got some serious competition. What has been some stand out moments for you as a band so far? Paul - There have been some amazing ones to choose from! Hanoi, Vietnam was an incredible experience; playing while renowned artist Tran Trunh Linh painted onstage beside us. Also walking down the catwalk with Kelly Slater and the most beautiful Parisian models at the opening of the new Quiksilver HQ in St Jean De Luz, France was awesome. Although walking down it, I had all the elegance of a tranquilized gorilla! I am Giant are: Shelton Woolright (drums), Paul Matthews (bass), Max O’Donnell (guitar) and Ed Martin (vocals). Get down to HRC on Sat 6th for their live set at the Quiksilver Pro after party.

The Temper Trap Hard Rock Café Wed 10 Nov 10pm
Hail From OZ Sound Like Alternative Rock
have Been Currently one of the most talked about international bands across the globe and certainly within Indonesia, the sounds of Temper Trap have spread faster than you can say the words ‘cult following’ and have become appreciated across a huge span of genres thanks to their unique mix of pulsing guitar riffs, hypnotic rhythms and soaring vocal melodies. Getting together in Melbourne through friendship and a shared love for creating music, these boys were soon touring Australia and building a faithful following on the way. With their first release ‘Conditions’ on the shelves under the production direction of Jim Abiss (of Arctic Monkey’s and Kasabian fame), a blast of success across national borders followed and the band has since been touring to all sorts of nations with sell out shows and a massive amount of airplay. Frontman Dougy was born and raised in Manado of North Sulawesi to an artistic and musically creative family, so his local roots have brought the band even more attention within Indonesia. are Now While many international tours see bands stopping off in Jakarta and ignoring our little piece of paradise down here in Bali, The Temper Trap have turned the tide and made a decision to hit Hard Rock Café for a show. After a heavy couple of years on the live front, you can bet they’ll be well in tune with putting on a rocking performance and no doubt Dougy will be giving his home country some extra love. Get down to Hard Rock Café and enjoy the experience.

itibank Ubud Writers & Readers Festival 2010 has drawn to a close. This year’s event was the largest ever, with more writers, more sessions and more visitors coming from all over the world. This year, during the 6th to 10th October, UWRF ran with great success through the tagline of ‘Bhinneka Tunggal Ika’ (Harmony in Diversity). One of the highlights of the festival was an emotive tribute to the former president of Indonesia, Gus Dur, which was held on the opening day at Pura Dalam Ubud. The tribute featured a theatrical dance performance titled ‘Percakapan Sunya

This year the UWRF committee also gave the MasterCard-Saraswati Literary Award for Lifetime Achievement to one of Indonesia’s own legendary literature figures, Sitor Situmorang, who devoted his literature pieces to the fight against the former Soeharto Regime. The festival’s theme Bhinneka Tunggal Ika: Harmony in Diversity, was clearly reflected through all the programs with many writers from many countries around the world, uniting as one at Ubud.

This year’s Balinale Film Festival 2010, the fourth in succession, was another great success. Starting off with welcome drinks and dinner at Warisan restaurant in Seminyak for all the foreign directors in town for the festival and then the opening and premier of Eat, Pray, Love on the next evening at Galeria Cineplex 21 in Kuta, where all the festival films were shown for the next five days, this year’s Balinale had a great atmosphere and with plenty of community spirit.
popular flick at the festival was the facebook story called Social Network, which won the best feature award of the Balinale.
The films were shown at all times of the day and night and featured movies, short films and documentaries from all over the world.

One of the most anticipated films and premiers was the Eat, Pray, Love feature that, as everyone knows was shot around Bali, and with the Balinale organizers and many folk from all over town involved with the making of that Julia Roberts movie it gave the proceedings that much more of a Bali community spirit and feeling of participation. The Eat, Pray, Love movie has been very well received in the community and is still playing at Galeria cinema now. “It appears to be giving hope to the Balinese people, hope that all is fine in Bali. It’s the beautiful scenery and vistas making people feel that the tourism etc will continue ok,” said Rudolph Dethu, social commentator on all things Bali to The Beat Daily at the gala premier. Traveling Phuket Phuket, Thailand is getting closer all the time.
P
huket is a beautiful island of rolling tree-filled hills, white sandy beaches that stretch for miles, large bays and hidden coves. Driving along the coastal road on the western side of the island the road goes up and down over hills from one bay and beach to the next and at every turn arriving at a new settlement, some large and some small. Phuket really is a beautiful island. Air Asia plans to have a direct flight soon between Bali and Phuket once government approvals are in place, which will connect the islands like never before. The Beat took off last month via the existing Air Asia flight that connects through Jakarta and went looking for the more up-market end of town. The way I see it, there are two ways of going on holiday in Phuket; as a single traveler with your mates, or as a couple. I went with my partner. As a single traveler the bar life is pretty intense and the availability of pole bars that line just about every main street of every town are a good indication of what’s on offer in that department, but the question is what is there on offer if one goes as a couple? There is a lot actually away from the bars in Phuket, even though they aren’t off limits to couples either of course; there’s a lot of space and a breathtaking landscape that’s home to some of the most amazing villas and resorts that money can buy. There’s also some great dining in all styles and cuisines from low to high-end, shopping to keep your wardrobe and homewares selection overflowing, beautiful clean beaches that stretch for miles and the crystal clear waters of the Andaman Sea at every turn. Patong Beach on the west coast is still the center of all things tourism on Phuket and the hub for most tourism activities and tourists visiting the island. There are a

plethora of accommodation options from high to low and streets of restaurants and shopping that stretch for miles. Patong Beach is the action hot spot and nightlife center of Phuket and if it’s girls, ladyboys or just a big night out (a trip to Bangsa Road is always a one-time must) that’s the place to be. Up in the Kamala/Surin beach areas, the speed is a gear slower and for many couples and people looking for a more normal pace, it can offer a relaxed alternative. Loads of dining options are available along the beach in Surin both day and night. Check Taste, Catch and At Panta Beach Clubs, or try Aussie run Diver. Later on a drink or tapas at Studio Lab could be in order. Not far away in Bangtao just before the entrance of the Laguna Complex is the famous Siam Supper Club where you will find not only great food and an enormous selection of quality wines but also owner Sean, who’s always ready for a chat and suggestion on the F&B. Rockfish restaurant in the southern corner of Kamala beach is another great dining spot from breakfast till late. Paresa Resort also in south Kamala has an excellent Italian and Thai restaurant well worth a visit. Taxis in Phuket are different. There don’t appear to be many taxis using meters and all trips we had in both cars and tuk tuks the prices were negotiated before getting in. It’s recommended to get a hotel transfer when arriving at the airport to save you some hassles. Air Asia flies daily from Denpasar to Jakarta and then direct to Phuket. www.airasia.com For more info go to www.phuket.com – loads of accommodation and general info tips.

Bali’s fashion designers show their wears again in Laguna Resort The annual Fashion Tendance fashion show organized by APPMI Bali (Indonesian Fashion Designers and Entrepreneurs Association Bali’s Chapter) was held on Sunday evening at The Laguna Resort in Nusa Dua. The theme of this year’s event was ‘Cita Di Alam’, loosely translated as ‘A Taste of Nature’ which did have an effect on some of the designs presented – some a little too much an effect. New designer and former model, Cherry Scherzinger, was up first and brought with her a taste directly off the street; a street possibly called D’Street being heavily influenced by a brand of a similar name, but was probably the most viable collection on the catwalk that night. Strangely enough the next designer up had the name of D’Label which I found out later was actually a men’s collective effort from the APPMI designers and was also obviously influenced by d’squared too, but on this occasion didn’t match up to Cherry’s exciting wear.

From that point it was back to APPMI Bali members and the two imports, one from Jakarta, Dejong and the other foreign local resident, Espen Sarlberg. The designs this year were toned down somewhat in comparison with previous years. Most designers were less flamboyant and appeared to be looking for more practicality than the personal fame and ego gratification of past years. Does this mean a more mature designer group? Or does it mean a less interesting fashion collection? Maybe a bit of both in the end, but at least by being more practical there’s a stronger chance of the fashion being more functional and wearable. And with all that, a chance of them being more viable at the place where it counts – the cashier. Many of the garments presented were of the highest quality and design. This year APPMI members involved were; Ali Charisma, Angeliqa Wu, Dwi Iskandar, Eny Ming, Oka Diputra, Putu Aliki, Tude Togog, Tjok Abi, Monika Weber, and Muji Ananta. [Text David Trauts. Best: Horror Movie Villains
With Halloween upon us, it’s time to pay homage to the characters that have really made us shake in our shoes. It seems that anything related to childhood - from puppets and clowns to kids themselves - and creepy masks are the order of the day for what really gets inside our heads. If you’re not going out dressed as one of these guys this all Hallow’s Eve, grab a DVD and some popcorn and watch them instead… Pennywise – ‘IT’ Striking abject fear into the hearts of anyone who watches Stephen King’s ‘IT’, this horrifying clown has successfully ruined all circuses and children’s parties for the masses. Forever. Freddy Krueger – ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ The twisted face, the blades for fingers – even the creepy little green and red jumper. It all added up to a terrifying character with the power to kill us in our dreams. 9, 10, never sleep again? We nearly didn’t. Leatherface – ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ Leatherface and his mask of human skin was an almost unparalleled character for brutality, before the likes of ‘Hostel’ came along. Brandishing a chainsaw and bearing down on his victims with excruciating slowness, this guy really made our palms sweat. Regan / The Devil – ‘The Exorcist’ In its hay day, this movie sent people running for the nearest church. The possessed little girl’s crab walk, spinning head and grating voice still make us 21st century viewers want to run too… for the nearest toilet.
068 | beatmag.com
Billy and Stu – ‘Scream’ There isn’t a Halloween goes by without someone dressing up in this now iconic mask and cloak. The mask, the knife, the distorted voice, all create some real suspense in this teen gorefest. Michael Myers – ‘Halloween’ Teen slayer Michael Myers could well be the ultimate slasher in this series of blood and guts films. Once again, an unnerving mask creates a fear of what could be lurking behind it. Samara – ‘The Ring’ Old-fashioned dress, bluewhite skin and black tendrils of hair hanging over her face – not unlike ‘The Grudge’, Samara climbs dripping wet out of TV screens to claim her victims in ‘The Ring’. You fully expect her to climb out of your own goggle box at any given point. And that scares us. Pinhead – ‘Hellraiser’ Another iconic horror film character that was never about to escape this list, Pinhead, the harvester of human souls, was deliberately presented as a departure from the mute or wisecracking 1980s horror movie villains who preceded him. Jigsaw – ‘Saw’ In a gruesome film that tests the lengths humans will go to for survival, this creepy little puppet on a bike is more horrifying than blood, gore and the serial killer himself. Chuckie – ‘Child’s Play’ Brutal and pretty sick, possessed child’s doll, Chuckie, is enough to give even the most level-headed person nightmares. Maybe it’s the evil eyes, maybe it’s the unnerving grin. Whatever it is, there’s no way our old toys are ever leaving the attic again.

Eikon? Eikon is on Jl Legian, and is open for food from 11am-12am. Contact them on 750701 for more info, reservations, or to order take-out.
I
f you’re one of those people who’ve only ever visited Eikon during a night-time, whistle-stop tour of Legian Street, you wouldn’t be the only one. With the amount of bars and clubs along that stretch with touts galore and bass beats that rattle round your chest cavity, it’s probably not the first place you’d think of for an evening meal. So when I went to Eikon at around 7pm last Tuesday, I was given a genuine, fantastic surprise. No crowds, no pumping speakers, no edging your way through a crowd in the darkness. Just a beautiful bar/ restaurant, with a few groups of diners tucking into their food. I sat at the bar, looking round at the quirky wall art, stylish chandelier above the staircase and the candlelit tables, with restaurant manager, Suzanne Foster. Suzanne is easily one of the most positive and involved managers I’ve come across yet on this culinary journey round Kuta and Seminyak. Genuinely excited about the food review and with a real belief in Eikon’s 082 | beatmag.com
No? Well, you should. Tosca tells us why…
food, she tells me how much they have in store for us; and admittedly, at that point, I was silently commending her for her enthusiasm about a presmash up burger. How wrong I was. Sipping on a gorgeous and very healthy fresh juice, I’m introduced to Chef Mohamad SS – otherwise known as Mas Mamad – who was flown in from his previous job in Jakarta by Eikon, purely because of his talent in the kitchen. Not only are Mas Mamad and the kitchen staff open to requests from guests that aren’t on the menu (providing the kitchen has the ingredients), but they also cater for private parties in the garden area of Eikon. When Suzanne said she had a lot in store for us, she wasn’t kidding. Plate after plate of immaculately presented dishes arrive at our table, providing a huge and delicious showcase of Eikon’s best cuisine. First up were the Mexican Quesadillas
(30K). Rather than the usual thin tortillas, these quesadillas came in a thick wrap, stuffed full of chunky pieces of garlic infused chicken, melted cheese and a mouthwatering layer of caramelized onions. Remaining on a Mexican theme, a plate of Nachos (30K) arrived also, which were light and crispy, with a meaty, chile topping, melted cheese and a dollop of sour cream. From the Asian section of the menu came the Fried Oxtail Soup (55K). Pieces of tasty oxtail in a spicy mixture of kecap manis, onion, garlic, chili and peppers were served with a separate broth and white rice. This dish is popular with locals in particular. My personal favourite soup however, was an amazing Thai Tom Yum Goong (40K), a sour and spicy broth with a warm but not overpowering heat from the spices used, containing prawns, squid, snapper, mushrooms, tomatoes and lemongrass.
meal as the ribs, rather than a mere afterthought to decorate the plate. The huge Chicken Schnitzel (55K) was in breadcrumbs, topped with a bolognaise style sauce and melted cheese – an ideal hangover cure. Grilled Squid (50K) was the final taste test of the review, which, along with all other fish and seafood on the menu, came from Jimbaran Bay – an example of Eikon’s endeavour to use only the highest quality ingredients. Served with crispy crème potatoes, the squid was cooked in a ginger, garlic, onion and chili combo to give it a tasty kick.
There’s so much going on with Eikon’s restaurant at the moment. The menu is expanding, and desserts such as Pancakes with Strawberries, Cream and Fresh, Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream will be available soon. Upstairs is also going to be developed into a better seating area – an ideal Moving on to the main courses, we really enjoyed vantage point for watching the ‘interesting’ sights the Pork Ribs, which were only 65K. The meat of Legian walk by! Add to this, daily afternoon fell off the bone and was glazed in a homemade specials, happy hour from 2pm-5pm and sport BBQ style sauce, made predominantly from beer, and movies on screen as well as music, and you’ve honey and chili. Fries and crunchy vegetables also got the whole package; with a professional and featured on the plate, and had been sautéed in passionate team behind it. If ever there was a time garlic butter, making them as much a part of the to stop thinking of Eikon as “just a bar”, now is it. beatmag.com | 083

or those who love exploring cuisine as much as continents, we’re continuing our journey through Bali’s local food delights with Sate Lilit. Easy to find throughout the island in local warungs and at traditional markets, this dish is very popular amongst the people of Bali. Made from large ocean fish such as Sea Tuna or Mackeral, the fish is softened and the flavor enhanced with coconut milk, grated coconut, lemongrass, lime leaves, garlic, onion, ‘kencur’ (galingale) and various other spices including pepper and salt. The whole mix is squeezed and ‘glued’ like a paste around a wide stick, to then be cooked over hot coals. The resulting taste makes a delicious snack or can be a full meal along with Balinese vegetables (Ketupat). Much healthier than a paddle pop and far more fulfilling! 084 | beatmag.com

Gear Wheel IQ Cube Should you decide to order one, you’ll probably want to take a picture of the Gear Wheel IQ Cube before you start playing with it because that’s probably the last time you’re ever going to see it as a perfect cube. Designed to take the Rubik’s Cube to a whole other level, the twistable pieces on the IQ Cube are designed to work as gears so rotating a single one causes other pieces to rotate as well in a chain reaction. 2 November Gaya Art Space LADRI DI BICICLETTE (The Bicycle Thief), 1948, by Vittorio De Sica remains one of De Sica’s greatest achievements. This film is based on a very simple idea for a story - man against the elements. In this case, the elements are those of a society that is often cruel and unforgiving, and a rare job in post-war Rome which requires a bicycle, is put in jeopardy when the bike is stolen. art Beauty in Impermanence
by Joanna Cutri
B
orn and raised in Los Angeles, Joanna Cutri was “inspired by nature and the rich artistic lifestyle of the Balinese”. Considered technically a figurative artist, her rich and complex canvasses can best be described as subconscious tapestries. While ultimately feminine, they are never overly sweet or decorative. Her figures are most often phantom-like silhouettes that simultaneously jump out and recede into multiple layers of color, textures, patterns, words and series of enigmatic numbers, as seen in her work ‘Sisters’, a stunning composition of rainbow-hued women standing in a row, against an opaque gray textured background. By using multiple mediums including collages, she evokes the layers seen on old Italian walls and frescoes. As the title of her show implies, beauty is exquisite, but impermanent.

Whose Canvas Is This?
Irawan Prasetyo (aka PRAS) Born in Jogyakarta, 16 December 1974
Concept Idea exploration and daily activities are the background for this artist’s work. Irawan Prasetyo believes wherever he lives can inspire him and affect his artistic creations; from simple things like everyday objects, to snapshots of daily life - he uses these as the stimuli and basic elements of his every work. ‘Pras’ has made a conscious decision to try and paint ‘everything he ever saw’, which he says makes him more aware of what goes on in society today. Gaining feelings of independence through expressing himself in art, Pras uses a variety of techniques from painting through to sculpture to convey his feelings.
