C

hristmas is fast approaching which means it’s time to start thinking about getting your presents and party invitations sorted out for the end of the year. With the state of the bourgeoning tourist traffic coming through our doors it does look set to be a bumper festive season. Before then though, we also have a bunch of top acts heading into town. We’ve had a stack of international acts passing through Bali over the last few months and the next two weeks are no exception; Sander van Doorn, Jo Mills, DJ Rap, Peter Kruder – it’s bigger than the middle of August and we’re at the end of November! Check the What’s On and HereNow sections inside for the full details. We’ve been very busy lately with our new Beat Daily email. It’s an early start, up at the crack of dawn scouring the news and sniffing out the hottest items of interest around the island to send out to our 8000 and growing list of recipients. All the feedback we’re getting from around the island has been pretty enthusiastic, while others who don’t live here or aren’t regular visitors simply un-subscribe. No hard feelings there though, we can understand why. If you would like to subscribe, just go to our website www.beatmag.com register and look forward to receiving all the latest Bali and entertainment news five days a week right to your inbox. Comments from our TB VIP Card members: LIKES 1. TB gives great information on exciting restaurants and hotels, which I like to see and experience, at the moment I am in Ubud and I have been to Nuri’s thanks to you, and will try Cinta Grill soon. 2. TB contains a comprehensive guide to events around the island. 3. I now can find affordable hotels in Kuta thanks again to you... on poppies lane. 4. The info inside is all worthy of reading. 5. Good design. DISLIKES 1. You need to give more promotion / discounts on various restaurants. 2. And hotels as well......discountsssss! 3. Please inform us on food prices at major restaurants plus their special menus. Thank you. Bayu. I have been reading The Beat Magazine since a few months ago and found it a lot of fun. TB is also my restaurant guide in Bali, that’s why I need a Beat VIP card. Dislikes about the Beat Magazine? Well, I did not find any. I think there’s nothing. So far so good! Jeffrey S. Starting December 1st, 2010, PT Angkasa Pura I has decided to increase the domestic airport tax 33% in order to upgrade their service. “The domestic departure tax is going to be adjusted from Rp 30,000 to Rp 40,000. The last time we did the adjustment was in 2005, explained Heru Legowo, the General Manager of PT Angkasa Pura I Ngurah Rai airport, last week. According to Heru, the revenue from airport tax per day at present is Rp 1,2 billion. DJ Rap

Hard Rock Café Sat 27 Nov 10PM

Sounds Like Drum & bass Hails From Los Angeles, CA

Has Been With a career spanning over 15 years, DJ Rap has moved effortlessly between genres, staking her claim on various styles within the electronic spectrum, while simultaneously pushing the limits of rock and pop. Being dubbed ‘the first lady of drum ‘n’ bass’ and hailed the undisputed queen of the turntables, her music has infiltrated club systems and car stereos the world over, and her numerous forays into video games and motion picture soundtracks have solidified her status as one of dance music’s most successful and prolific artists. With three studio albums, 75 mix compilations and over 2,000,000 in cumulative worldwide sales to her name, the name Rap is synonymous with one hell of night of nonstop great beats. Is Now More than just another cute face behind the decks, Rap is solid in the world of electronic dance music. Recently this year she released the album Synthesis (Ministry of Sound) - a brand new studio album that weaves together a full complement of synthetic textures and organic moods, and paints a lucid picture of her journey as a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Be sure not to miss her performance when she hits the stage at Hard Rock Café on the 27th of November.

Legendary for his mixing mastery, combining nu jazz, future funk and soulful samples into up-tempo minimal loops at 120-130 bpm, Peter always leaves the dance floors in ashes whenever he hits clubs around the world. His first experience on the turntables was at Youth Center Ottakring in 1983, and has since been a mainstay in the electronic scene for the past two decades. Kruder and his partner in crime Richard Dorfmeister are the owners of G Stone Recordings in Vienna, through which they release many of their own and other producer’s collections. are Now SOS is set to be filled with the thumping trip-hop drum & bass (even underwater) beats of Peter Kruder when December comes around. Sherina Kama Sutra Sat 27 Nov 10PM

Sound Like Pop Hail From Jakarta

Has Been Sherina has been under the spotlight from the young age. Her amazing vocal quality, equal to that of many singers thrice her age, brought much amazement to many fans young and old, for someone as young as her. Her popularity led her to star in her very own feature length musical film titled ‘Petualangan Sherina’ in 2000, which became an instant box office hit, reviving Indonesia’s film industry which had somewhat disappeared at that time. Escaping the limelight to focus on her studies, Sherina returned in 2007 as a sexy teenage songstress with the album ‘Primadona’, but failed to make a big impression like in her younger years. Several years later she once again tried her luck in the music scene with more mature sound, and instantly won fans with the song ‘Geregetan’, from her album ‘Gemini’. is Now Sherina will be performing at Kama Sutra on the 27th of November for an event titled ‘Soundsation Immortality’. She’ll be performing alongside Cokelat Band for a night filled with great pop and rock music. Be sure not to miss the show.

Hail From Singapore

Has Been The story he tells of his humble beginnings into the world of turntablism is one which is strangely filled with tales of intergalactic abduction, Vikings and something to do about him becoming a king in some far flung galaxy. It’s hard to get the truth out of this young Asian DJ’s background; the only thing that can be said about him is that his fidget house beats are unlike anything heard before. His sounds are a fusion of Big Bass, Funky grooves, Afro, Dub, Hip-Hop, and bleeps of techno. Zushan has strutted his stuff at some of the biggest clubs in Singapore and has also been sighted at various festivals and events around the small island country. Teaming up with his partner in crime, rapper Monkey King (Japan), they have set up a new independent Record Label 1or8 Faction, bringing forward sounds of Asia. is Now Having travelled the globe and performing at the many clubs during his globe-trotting endeavours, Zushan is now preparing to get down and dirty behind the decks at Hu’u on the 3rd of December. Jo Mills Sounds Like Solid percussive, sexy, twisted house with soul

Double Six Sat 4 Sat 11PM

Hails From England

Has Been Jo’s love affair with music began well over 10 years ago when she worked at Flying Records in Soho alongside Rocky and Mark Wilkinson. With those two problem kids beside her, Jo couldn’t help but get the bug for DJing and convinced Mark to teach her how to mix, which eventually opened the doors to her DJ career. With an itinerary of gigs as far-flung as Moscow, Singapore, Italy, Johannesburg, Germany, America, Ibiza and of course in clubs all over England it’s no wonder she has made a name for herself on the international DJ scene. Her reputation as one of the nicest lasses in the business is down to not only her talent and no nonsense attitude but also her ability to get right on down and mucky with the best of them on the dance floor. There’s also an interesting change in direction for Jo, as she has recently strayed off the path of dance music and joined forces with New York band, Lucky, fronted by Mindy K to experiment in the area of contemporary band music. Is Now Apart from residencies at Belfast’s Milk, Sugar in Lemington Spa and The Zap in Brighton, Ms. Mills continues to tour the globe to keep her name and beats in the thick of it. She’ll be landing on the stage at Double Six on the 4th of December to open the weekend with her sexy and crowd enticing rhythms.

Their first single ‘Karma’ became an overnight success with extensive radio play and high record sales all over the nation. The band even topped the charts in Malaysia. To date, the band has successfully released nine albums, all of which have reached the top of the national charts. Are Now After a short hiatus, the band returned earlier this year with a new formation, replacing the previous vocalist Kikan, with Sarah Hadju, a finalist from Indonesian Idol. Asia Line Band

Hard Rock Café’s latest home band, Asia Line, have rocked HRC Jakarta for some time. Now the band is back to take the crowds of Hard Rock Café Bali by the horns and rock out to their beats again. The Beat grabbed the keyboardist, Denny and guitarist, Dave for a short one-on-one interview. 048 | beatmag.com

hereNOW

onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic What’s the history of the band? How did you end up together? Asia Line was formed on the 19th of August 2003, that would be two days after celebrating Indonesia’s 58th Independence day, not that it matters much. We were brought together by IP entertainment at Hard Rock Café Jakarta. We’ve all worked together before Asia Line, but this formation made us tighter. You’ve graced the stage of HRC Jakarta for quite some time and now are moving on to become HRC Bali’s new regular band, what vibe are you going to bring to Bali? Or will you keep things like in Jakarta? Basically, what Asia Line was known to do at Hard Rock Café Jakarta won’t be much different from what we’ll be showcasing in Bali. We’ll still be playing the same songs we’ve been known for.

lucky to open for many amazing Indonesian bands; it was a pleasure and certainly an honour to be able to do that. On the down side, having to open for many of Indonesia’s soppy one hit wonder bands is kind of a turn off for us. It’s not something we’re proud of, but we have to do it. What have been the best moments of the band over the last year? When we performed at Hard Rock Café Kuala Lumpur and all the girls in the crowd were head banging and many of them were bra-less. Things got really insane when we started performing the song ‘Cowboys from Hell’ by the band Pantera, one of the bra-less head bangers banged there head a little too hard, hitting one of our sound monitors. She cut her head, but when she was fixed up continued to rock to our songs.

Are there any plans for an album in the Asia Line Band’s future? We have no plans right now to release an album. Not that we don’t want to release one, because the thought has always lingered in our hearts, it’s just we haven’t planned what kind of concept the album will take just yet. We’ll see in the near future though…

What are your hopes for the coming year and beyond? To one day become the opening band for a Metallica concert!

Being a cover band, what would you say are your favourite musicians to cover? We’ve always played rock songs, from classic rocking hits to the more modern styles of the genre. Our favorite band and we always love to perform would have to be Metallica.

Are any of the band members involved in other projects? Every member of the band has their own freedom to work on any project they desire as long as they return to Asia Line at the end of the day.

Out of all the musicians the band covers, who would you say influences the band’s style the most? Our biggest influence would have to be Metallica, but we also get our kicks from other bands as well, like Radiohead. What have been some of the bands wildest experiences on a HRC stage? It would have to be the time we performed and hung out with NOFX at Hard Rock Café Bali. Those guys were insane! It was a pleasure and an honour to have shared the stage with them. Asia Line Band has opened for several big name artists, who would you say is one of the most memorable artists you’ve shared the stage with? There’s too many to mention, but some of them would probably be Saosin, Accadaca, The Corronas, NOFX, I Am Giant, and many others. Our jam session with Uriah Heap was also pretty awesome. We’ve also been

What do you expect the crowd in Bali to be like? They can be how they wanna be, just as long as they interact with the music we play and have a great time.

Has Asia Line Band ever performed out of the HRC circle, if so where, why and how was it? Out of the HRC circle, we’ve performed at Coyote Surabaya, Colors Pub Surabaya, Liquid Makasar, Cheers Café Purwokerto, Boshe Yogyakarta and many others. What songs are on your iPod’s regularly played list? Metallica, of course! AC/DC, Whitesnake, 30 Seconds to Mars and many other hard rocking bands can be found on my playlist. Shout out to Bali? Continue to rock out to our beats until the end of January next year! Catch this lively rocking band in all its glory 6 times a week starting from 11pm, and becareful when you start head banging along with the tunes, we won’t want any injuries…

rio sidik

returns ...

After arriving back from his three month summer musical walkabout around Europe, we caught up with trumpeter/ Saharaja front man Rio Sidik to see what he got up to and chat about his life in music.

W

e met with Rio Sidik a few days after his return to Bali at JP’s Warung for a little chat and from the moment we met, he seemed to be emitting a different aura about him. An air of a much calmer and mature person resonated from him. This was my first time meeting him in person, besides seeing him on stage and he seemed much slimmer than before his trip, but other than that he still looked the same Rio Sidik. He had many stories to tell about his musical travels and also a lot more about his life, giving me more insight on a guy I’d only known from the stage. Most of his time when in Europe was spent in London where he was lucky enough to be invited to perform at the house of Robin Gibbs of Bee Gees for a special event. At the event Rio and his trumpet shared the stage with the likes of Tim Lapthorne, Kevin Armstrong, Natasha Bedingfield, Tim Dwals, Josh Stone and many others. He even shared a table with Simon Cowell’s mother. Not only performing with big name musicians, Rio also got the chance to toot his horn with #3 world ranked DJ Peter Poyton at The Penthouse London. Eventually his roaming lead him to Portugal where he played with DJ Chus and then to Holland to share the stage with Hans Dulfer. After being awe struck by the luck he struck on his travels of Europe, the one question I had

060 | beatmag.com

to ask was “What the greatest thing he gained from his trip?” The question took some time for him to answer but he said that after his close to nine year marriage was finally coming to an end, he found refuge in music, and that this trip was what made him cope with the stresses of that situation. He finished by saying that to him music has always saved him from his troubles. He definitely seemed much wiser, but the recent personal trials haven’t seemed to affect him so much as he always ended most of his comments with a huge laughing smile. Another question I really wanted to know was, “When will Saharadja return with a new album?” He promised that early next year the new album will be available for all the fans, but now with a new line-up. Before we ended our chat, Rio played a newly unreleased track for us, and it was clear that the song was a departure from his old funky self, and sounded much more mature than I’ve heard before. Rio Sidik will perform at JP’s Warung every Friday night with his Jazz quartet, but don’t be surprised if he slips a few of his original improvisations in sometime during his show, he’s always known to add a little twist to every performance. Be sure to enjoy Rio and the gang at JPs soon! (Rinaldi)

One Million

Facebook Fans Can’t Be Wrong “Honestly we never thought that cyberspace (especially Facebook) would become our battle field. Yet as culture evolves so does humanity, I guess this is a phenomenon we can’t turn a blind eye to. In the past two years we’ve decided to continually maintain our existence on the World Wide Web. The results have been quite significant and also very beneficial, especially when it comes to informing the masses.” Those were the words of JRX, the charmingk, local prince of punk rock, about the extraordinary accomplishments achieved by his insanely hard hitting band Superman Is Dead. Since last checked the total number of fans for SID has reached almost one and a half million and continues to grow larger. That’s the reason why JRX, Bobby Kool (vocals, guitar), and Eka Rock (bass, backing vocals) are rarely seen on any morning TV shows, opting for performing at stage shows away from the prying eyes of the camera. The congregation of musicians that formed the band back in 1995 in Denpasar has proven that regular appearances on television doesn’t necessarily result in someone becoming a household name. By rarely showing up on the small screen, they still have successfully pulled in millions of fans to their musical cause.

062 | beatmag.com

“We aren’t the type of band who likes to regularly expose ourselves; sometimes we discuss topics other than music ranging through different issues such as human rights, fanaticism, environment etc, and this tends to spark controversy. This is where we (or anybody who has joined our FB page) can learn. And that’s the beauty of it. FB SID is more than just a promotional tool for the band, but has grown to become a learning pot for anybody, even to us.” JRX continued to point out that the tendency to exhibit ones self – or the common word used now days, Narcissism – which is still commonly used by many of today’s celebrities, can be seen as an outdated method of promotion. SID’s methods of discussing issues of humanity has become its own magical magnet. The vast expansion of outSIDers/ Lady Roses (nicknames for SID fans) that continues to grow is actually due to explosive discussion regarding non-musical topics. It could be due to the younger generation’s fascination of SID’s cool persona, yet still caring about matters around them, giving them an image of wise and funky scholars. Consider them as conscious punk rockers. Catch what other devious plans the band has in store by logging onto www.supermanisdead.net

Janz Suandika Janz Suandika, started out radio music directing and band managing (for Tol Band Tol) as well as being a band agent for D’ext Management, holding frequent stage appearances in Bali most of which were featured in The Beat’s ‘On The Rise’ articles. Now he talks to The Beat about his vision of music. You hold many roles in the industry, as music director, on air operator, scriptwriter and event and promotion for radio, and now you’re a band manager and band agent. Tell us what’s the red line between all this roles? Both the radio and music industries have one thing in common: MUSIC. Frankly it has been my prime need in life. So I’d say music and the love of it defines the red line. Did your first job have anything to do with music? Back then I started a band but didn’t last too long and from there I just kept myself going as a music director in a radio station. First thing you do when one of your band members disappears 3 minutes before hitting the stage? 1. Call a friend 2. 50:50 3. Ask the audience, hahaha… Craziest thing that you’ve seen within the music industry? When fans appreciate free stickers over the band itself. Wildest fans? After a gig in Singaraja, we made our way back home to Denpasar, and suddenly when we arrived, someone was knocking on the car door, suspiciously a robber or something. But eventually we knew that it was just fans that had stalked us all the way 2-3 hours drive from Singaraja to Denpasar just to ask for free band stickers.

064 | beatmag.com

The most thing annoying for an event organizer? Rubber watch (‘jam karet’, just like one of our songs haha). When the gig is later than what’s on the schedule. If there was an ideal condition, a fair situation for Indonesian musicians, what would it be like? A good label contract, TV Airplay, nationwide promo tour, plus a happy family with 2 children for every band member would be fair. Possibility for Bali musicians to make it in the national industry: impossible or just good luck? I don’t think it’s impossible for talented Bali musicians to make it on the national stage, some already have, but luck can always make a difference. I always wonder if only Bali was the capital of Indonesia. Automatically Bali bands would grow as much as the big ones we see now. Shout out to The Beat? Always support Bali musicians, Indonesian musicians, and add more music pages for band profiles and their works at the beat. www.facebook.com/dextartis www.myspace.com/tolbandtol www.facebook.com/tolbandtol www.formspring.com/janztbt

Lately Lani has been shooting “Belajar Indonesia” (Trans TV), once or twice a month. This week she’s shooting two special episodes in Yogya to help raise awareness for the people who are having a hard time with the Merapi disaster. Lani also regularly plays with her band ‘Icon’ in cafes around Jakarta, and is currently working on her own songs, hoping to get them all done and get the album out soon.

Singer, TV Presenter What music are you into at the moment? You Me At Six, Pretty Reckless, Cute Is What We Aim For, Paramore. What was the first record you bought—any interesting story behind it? Ah... The first one I bought may have been Rage Against The Machine. I was in junior high school and my brother told me it was a "have to have" album, but I forget which one haha. What are your all-time favourite albums? Depends what mood I’m in actually. Maybe the first Slipknot CD (after they joined a major label) if I’m in the right crazy mood. But if I’m mellowing out maybe Cog’s The New Normal—good ol' Aussie band!! What was the worst record you ever purchased? I have no idea! At the time that I bought the album I would have loved it no matter what it was! I go through stages of loving music, depending on who's around me and what state of mind I’m in, so I’m sure

066 | beatmag.com

there are plenty of albums that now I look back on and wonder why I bought. But I can't say there's any "worst record" because I know at one point or another I loved or will love it. Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate? Maybe a butterfly, a short life but it seems like it would be a fun one. One reason being that it gets to change through three completely different stages of life. What music do you choose to start your weekend? Wow, that’s a really hard question! Definitely something fun and upbeat: Paramore, Pretty Reckless, AC/DC, Wolfmother. Anything goes! And music you choose to end your weekend? Mellow out music—gotta get prepared for Monday morning again: Xavier Rudd, Newton Faulkner, Cute Is What We Aim For.

EGRV Kings Of Leon Power On / Power Off Come Around Sundown After three years spent gradually fading away, electric duo EGRV have pulled their chairs up to the table of fame again, this time with a rich techelectro jaunt for both the glam crowd and indie ears. Adie Habibie and Lawrence Widarto have cooked it well with danceable electric, groovetronic urban tunes, midi riot, and some deep disco concern in the kitchen. Tracks like Stars On 45, You’re So Amazing, Drama Queen, and I Know That You’re Lookin’ Over Here are something big for any night out, but are equally perfect to fill in your living room with some music with plenty of smart energy.

The Followill brothers ride a different horse into town with every different album. These arena rock soldiers present a gracefully slower run this time on the tunes and distortion, perhaps because of the heavier lyric content and subject matter, or maybe the boys just want to loosen up for more beers and supermodels. Definitely not as chartfriendly as previous album Only by the Night, but the formula is a soul-bearer for anyone’s hard day’s night, or an amusement for southern rock fans. First single on the album ‘Radioactive’ is superbly atmospheric and most likely to become the hit track of the album, especially the choir remix. A worthy addition to the Kings canon, but something tells me it’s not quite the follow up the record execs were hoping for... What do they know though, anyway?

n a nail biting climax to both an epic Rip Curl Surf and Music Festival event and an incredible 2010 Coca-Cola ISC tour season, Marlon Gerber’s first ISC tour win resulted in 18 year old Putra Hermawan’s 2010 Coca Cola ISC Open Division Championship victory. The Sunday drama was the culmination of two days of incredible surfing action and entertainment at Kuta Beach for the annual Rip Curl Surf & Music Festival. Virtually every possible championship race scenario was exhausted during the jam-packed day of competitive surfing at Halfways Kuta Beach on Sunday, first with number two ranked Pepen Hendrik narrowly going down in the quarterfinals to number three ranked Dedi Santosa, and number one ranked Hermawan getting eliminated in the semifinals by Wayan Suprayinta and Lee Wilson. It all came down to Dedi Santoso in the final. If he won the Rip Curl Surf & Music Festival he would be champion. If not, Hermawan would win the championship. In the Rip Curl GromSearch National Finals, it was 14-year-old Jeren Kiring who will be taking the trip to Australia next year to compete in the

World GromSearch Finals at Bells Beach. He put on consistently high level performances on both his forehand and his backhand to finish with a total score of 12.45 points out of 20, just ahead of Koko Mitsua. In the Women’s Division final, Dyah Rahayu Dewi raced to her second consecutive ISC Women’s Division Tour victory, posting scores of 5.0 and 6.5 to eclipse her competition with a total heat score of 11.5 to her nearest rival Stella, who finished with a total score of 3.90. The awards presentation was delayed slightly by a sudden and heavy rain shower, but after about 30 minutes the awards were presented followed by some night time entertainment. Local bands Devil Dice and Dialog Dini Hari and Tol Band Tol warmed things up to start, and then with the beach filling up to maximum capacity, Efek Ruma Kaca kept things simmering until Seringai blew the crowd away with their hard core guitar blasting brand of rock and roll. A BBQ feast by Goko, barrels of Bintang beer, and some of the best rock bands in Indonesia made for an epic finish to an extraordinary weekend on Kuta Beach.

food review

This week’s food review comes from Bianco Restaurant in Jalan Padma. The Beat sent Italian foodie Dan Ashcroft along to check it out and to see what they mean by ‘Asian-Euro fusion’.

N

estled quietly down Padma street, just a stone’s throw from the beach sits Bianco Restaurant - it’s airy white interior an oasis of tasteful furnishings and uncluttered colonial-style décor. On a street that is not really known for dining at the more tasteful end of the scale, here is at least one establishment that has raised the standard in the area for delicious, good value eats and drinks with a unique menu that fuses traditional Indonesian cuisine with good old Italian cooking – courtesy of consultant chef and native Italian Roberto Bogni of Rosso Vivo fame. By January next year, Bianco will have been on the block for three years, having fed and watered many a happy diner, whilst garnering quite a reputation for lunch and dinner time delight. Clear a space on your table to make room for the huge gatefold food and drink menus, and give yourself a minute or two to fully take everything in… The drinks menu features everything you’d expect and more such as coffees, teas, juices, smoothies, milkshakes and soft drinks, not to mention a range of classic and special cocktails

Friendly, polite and efficient staff are buzzing around all the time with permanent smiles to make everyone feel welcome. The food menu boasts a host of Indonesian and Italian favourite dishes, with the idea being a subtle fusion of each cuisine. On the starter list you’ll find delicious soups like asparagus cream (26.5k+) and tom yum (35k+) alongside plenty of other snacks and salads. Indonesia is well represented with classic dishes like gado gado (27.5k+), rendang (51k+) and nasi uduk (68.5k+) as well as the mouth-watering Bianco grand rijstaffel feast to share (315k+). For the Italian side of things you’ll find a huge range of traditional style thincrust pizzas, and a generous list of pastas including spaghetti bolognese (58k+) and lasagne (61k+). There are also a smattering of international favourites like fish and chips (62k+) and chicken parmigiana (72.5k).

The main course is the perfect example of what Bianco is trying to achieve with the Italian-Indonesian fusion idea; ravioli fish curry (65.5k+). Soft pockets of Italian ravioli pasta are filled with fresh seafood in an Asian-style curry sauce with just a mild tang of spicyness. It’s a fantastic mix and really goes to show that these two cuisines can comfortably co-exist on the same plate. Last up is what I’ve been looking forward to the most: dessert. Truly Indonesia

Indonesian tastes for a traveler’s appetite…

RENDANG : PADANG (WEST SUMATERA) If you’ve ever stepped into a Padang restaurant, you will have been offered a dish called rendang. This thick sauced meaty concoction is a traditional dish from West Sumatra, where the city of Padang is situated. This dish has traveled all over Asia as the Padang people are commonly known as traders and have left this trademark dish wherever they roam. The dish’s main ingredients are meat (usually buffalo meat), grated coconut, various herbs and coconut milk. Because buffalo meat is usually tough, the rendang is cooked for a long period until the meat blends into the mixture of herbs and coconut milk into a thick stew. You can’t say you’ve been to Indonesia if you haven’t tried this delicious Padang delicacy. 084 | beatmag.com

But we imagine wee Siths have an adorable LEGO Minifig Alarm Clock on their bedside table. Maybe a Stormtrooper or even Lord Vader himself. Date : 6 Dec – 11 Feb Venue : Biasa ArtSpace Jl. Raya Seminyak No. 34 Kuta Tel : 8475 766 Email : media@biasaart.com Web : www.biasaart.com

The visual art exhibition titled “On Camera”, features the works of 10 local photographers who are joined within MES 56. This exhibition signifies an important phase in the groups passage into the realms of Indonesian contemporary arts. MES 56 was established in Yogyakarta back in 2004 during the time when Indonesian photography had a strong tendency to only be explored by those delving within the journalistic industry. The images presented in this exhibition explore and redefine the idea of the camera itself, which in many cases is commonly seen as an object or tool. In realizing this definition, the group focuses on how a camera has the ability to become a representation of how to perceive the world; a representation on “how to see” (the way of seeing). Each photographer questions their own relationship with the camera and how they define photography, presenting these basic questions by introducing a new ideology into art photography.

ISLAND of the SPIRITS By John Stanmeyer While residing in Bali for close to 5 years in virtual seclusion, the internationally acclaimed photojournalist, John Stanmeyer, wandered the more remote corners of the island to document esoteric rituals and dances. In order not to “produce yet another lovely colour book on the island of the Gods”, Stanmeyer chose to use black and white film and perhaps the World’s simplest camera – the Holga for this project. The compositions of the photos are asymmetrical. In “Melasti” we see only the forearms and wavy blades of two brandished krisses against a moody sky. In “Ubud Cremation” a lone hand points to the far away peak of a cremation tower carried on the shoulders of a crowd of agitated men. One face juts out firm and steadfast in the chaos. Having worked in over 70 nations and won numerous awards, John Stanmeyer has largely focused on conflict, social injustice and disappearing cultures. While Bali’s traditional ways do not seem to be in imminent danger, this unique series of photos raises important questions about the island’s heritage and where it is headed at this critical juncture in history. Concept

If viewed from a textual angle I Wayan Sedanayasa, or more commonly called Akonk, delves in the realms of realism, digging deep within an object and exposing a aspect rarely considered by other artists. An example of this captivating point of view is his zoomed-in painting of a motorcycle’s headlamp intricately featuring minor details, so realistic, you would swear it was a photograph. Apart from his realistic takes on certain objects, several of Akonk’s works present a realists approach on abstract objects.

98 | | beatmag.com 098

EXHIBITION

His first exhibition was back in 2005 as part of his graduation assignment and was held at SMKN 1, Sukawati. The following year, Akonk participated in an exhibition held by the art faculty of Undiksha, SIngaraja as well as taking part in a special art program held by FKI at ISI Denpasar. Several of latest exhibitions include, ‘Survey II” at Edwins Gallery Jakarta, ‘Menilik Akar’ at Gallery Nasional Indonesia, Jakarta and a reading exhibition titled ‘Bulian’ at Neka museum, Ubud. Some of his works are currently featured at Griya Santrian Gallery.
