The exhibition titled ‘1000 Photographers & 1000 Photos’ is scheduled to be held at Gedung Ksirarnawa Art Center. AYANA Extends Eat, Pray, Love Package AYANA’s ‘Eat Pray Love Bali’ package has proved popular following the release of the Hollywood blockbuster starring Julia Roberts, and quickly became the resort’s #1 selling package on its website. As a result, AYANA has extended the travel deadline from December 2010, until 30 June 2011. The rates remain unchanged, with rooms starting at US$298++ per night and villas at US$580++. “Many travelers have been inspired by the book and movie to create their own ‘Eat Pray Love’ experience in Bali,” said General Manager Charles de Foucault. “Our package combines spa, yoga, romantic dining and a tour to Ubud, to bring elements of this story to life for our guests. We are delighted with the response and the positive exposure this film has produced for Bali’s unique culture and attraction as a holiday destination.”
Saturday Means No Cars in Legian
3
After having been in operation in Denpasar for a few months now, Legian is following suit with a car free day program. Starting on Saturday, Nov 27, the north end of Legian (close to the old Bali Peanuts Club) as far as Bemo corner was closed to traffic. Along this stretch of approximately 1km, no cars or motorbikes are allowed to pass. People have to make do with walking or riding their push bikes. This program will be implemented every Saturday from 10 PM till 5 AM the next day. The police have already advertised this program by spreading information in the mass media and with banners around Kuta, the most prominent of which is on Bemo Corner, Kuta. We aren’t sure how this move will affect after-hours businesses in Kuta but we imagine it will keep all those happy Kuta tourists down there for the night.

Boshe Fri 17 Dec 10PM
Hails From Jakarta
Has Been Starting a musical career before graduating junior high is a great way to make it early into the entertainment scene, and that is exactly what Agnes Monica did. Singing children songs from an early age she eventually became a host for a children’s show on local television. Not long after she made her television acting debut in the TV series ‘Pernikahan Dini’ she released her first mature style solo album - all before graduating from high school. Inspired by international artists such as Janet Jackson, Britany Spears and Christina Aguilera, her style was at first quite identical to these performers when she first hit the scene, but now as she has matured, it’s clear that she has recognized her place in the world of music. A regular nominee for the many local award shows, her talents on screen as well as on the mic have all been praised by critics. is Now After returning from the United States as one of the international hosts and performers at the prestigious American Music Awards, Agnes is setting herself on a path of international stardom. Tiefschwarz Basti SOS Fri 17 Dec 11PM
Sounds Like House – Techno Hails From Germany
Have Been Born and bred in Stuttgart, brothers Ali and Basti Schwarz’s passion for techno and deep house was largely driven by their experiences in the early 90’s as DJs at the now legendary clubs that Ali ran in their home town, “ON -U” (1990 - 1993) and “Red Dog” (1993 - 1997). Around 1997, the brothers decided to begin producing and embarked on their joint venture as Tiefschwarz, releasing their first single “Music” on Wave Music (New York) in 1998. The success of their debut spurred them to record their first album “Ral 9005”, released on the Stuttgart-based label Four Music in 2000. The album was subsequently licensed to Classic Recordings in London in 2002, putting Tiefschwarz on the map in the UK and laying the groundwork for international notoriety. In the same year, Classic also released Ali & Basti’s mix album “A Little Help For Your Friends” and both releases were enthusiastically received by the English and international press. 2002 was also the year that Tiefschwarz relocated to the electronic mecca of Berlin, where they worked closely with Jochen Schmalbach. They continued to nurture their careers as international DJs, playing high-profile venues across the globe whilst simultaneously building up an impressive remix repertoire. are Now SOS once again becomes the base platform of the world’s best dance DJ’s when the brotherly duo of Tiefschwarz hit the stage on the 17th of December. The crowning of the Coca-Cola ISC Tour surfing champions took place on the 23rd November 2010, in the Discovery Room of the Discovery Kartika Plaza Hotel in Kuta - Bali where hundreds of surfers, surf industry members, media, and supporters gathered to celebrate the 7th year of continued growth and success of the ISC and to applaud the achievements of the 2010 ISC champions. The evening program got started at 8:30 pm with MC Tai Graham welcoming the attendees and introducing ISC CEO Tipi Jabrik, who also welcomed the audience and gave a brief summary of the year’s activities, which included sanctioning and running a total of 19 events during 2010.
066 | beatmag.com
There were 7 Open/Women/Masters Division events (Oakley, Rusty, Reef, the government of West Java, the government of Rote Ndao, Quiksilver, and Rip Curl), 2 Pro Junior Division events (Billabong and Oakley), 8 Junior Division events (Rusty, Quiksilver and Rip Curl), and 2 Specialty events (Oakley World Pro Junior and Bali International Sport Week) for a total of 19 events. Next, Jabrik presented appreciation awards to representatives of event sponsors Oakley, Rusty, Reef, the West Java government, the Rote Ndao government, Quiksilver, and Rip Curl, and surf industry supporters Baliwista (Bali Lifeguard Department), the environmental group GUS (Gelomban Udara Segar), and media including SurfTime Magazine, and Magic Wave Surf Community Newspaper. Finally, Jabrik presented the largest appreciation award to Sri “Ipung” Purwanto, Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia’s Corporate Social Responsibility Coordinator. Earlier this year the ISC and CCAI signed a historic 3-year sponsorship agreement, and Mr. Puranto told the audience how pleased he was to be part of this program that is not only helping to grow the sport of surfing in Indonesia but also creating more awareness about the environment and working to clean up Bali’s beaches and the ocean. A buffet dinner followed, during which the audience was treated to a spectacular “Year in Review” video by ISC’s videographer Sean Gilhooley. Then it was on to the crowning of the 2010 Indonesian Surfing champions, with the highlight of the awards being the crowning of 18-year-old Putra Hermawan from Nusa Lembongan as 2010 ISC Open

SURF Division Champion. He takes home a check for an unprecedented Rp 100 million (approximately $11,000 USD), the largest amount ever given to an Indonesian surfing champion. He also won the Pro Junior Division Championship (under 21 years of age), for which he received another Rp 5 million ($550 USD). Hermawan was last year’s Junior Division Champion as well, so in just two years he has won 3 division titles, indeed an impressive accomplishment. The Women’s Division championship was won by 28 year old Yasnyiar “Bonne” Gea, originally from Nias but now living in Bali, making this her 3rd consecutive ISC Women’s Championship title. Taking the Longboard Division Championship again this year is 29 year old Husni Ridwan from Batu Keras, West Java, and the Masters Division Championship (over 35 years old) was won by Ketut “Kombong” Juliarta in his first season competing as a Master. Rounding out the awards was 14-year-old Jeren Kiring from Bali hoisting the Junior Division (under
16 years old) Championship trophy. In just two years of competition, this adept young surfer has risen from virtual obscurity to Indonesia’s Junior surfing champion. Certainly this won’t be the last time this young man will climb on a stage to accept another championship trophy. With the awards presentations completed, it was straight into the music with the live band Shaggy Dog from Jogjakarta. They treated the audience to just over an hour of their upbeat tunes before calling it a night. The ISC would like to say a special thanks to all their sponsors and supporters including, Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia, Oakley, Rusty, Reef, West Java government, Rote Ndao government, Billabong, Quiksilver, Rip Curl, GUS, Baliwista, SurfTime, MagicWave, Bali & Beyond, Now Bali, Bali Down Under, Jakarta Post, the Bali Times, Lines, Surfersvillage, Baliwaves, SurfLine, and IndoSurfLife. Hosting a radio show and managing an influential nightclub (Dejavu) keeps Riri Djalil grounded, gaining strength from every face she sees and every show she runs… It’s your name, your face and your voice that is familiar all across Bali’s nightlife & entertainment scene. How do you feel being so well known? First of all I don’t really feel that way. I feel blessed with who I am, with many friends. Having many friends has its advantages. One of them is I don’t have to worry if I’m forced to go alone to a place, because everywhere I go I see familiar faces making it easier to blend in. Within the community I try to keep a conscious attitude, so no matter how wild a party gets, I always maintain my lady like manner! You host your own radio show and run an popular club in Bali. How do you keep everything in balance? On a daily basis I’m always grateful to the Almighty for everything I have right now. Besides that, I like to donate. Donating doesn’t only refer to money, but I share my time, energy and heart with anyone. When I help others, I tend to not want people to know what I’m doing. A quote I always believe in is “If your right hand gives, your left hand doesn’t have to know”. I also fast for the whole month of Ramadhan, and try to commence ritual prayer (shalat) as often as possible, although some of my friends doubt I can do my religious rituals properly, but I do my best and the fact is religion keeps me balanced. Give us at least three of your wildest experiences / parties you’ve ever had? When I moved to Bali in 1999, the first big party I ever attended was at Nyangnyang beach. There was like 2000 people in the same place partying, and the rain began pouring down but it didn’t stop people from raving on.

How did you end up being here? Back in ’99, I really wanted to move out of Jakarta due to all the chaos happening that year. My old office became a war zone with riots everywhere. I decided to move to Bali, living in a budget hotel, knowing nobody on the island until one day a friend told me about an advertising position. My real life in Bali began from there. Starting from nothing, only earning a sixth of the salary I got in Jakarta. Despite the troubles, I enjoyed my life here, and regularly hanging out with friends made things easier. We usually hung out at a gay bar in Dhyana Pura, which ended up recruiting me. From there I went on to work in a merchandising company, local wine company, and went on to create the Paranoia show with Tommy. After the first Bali bombing I flew back to Jakarta but not for long, returning in 2002 to Bali and working in several clubs. Returning once again to Jakarta, but the lure of Bali called to me again and here I am until now. 5 things you believe you maintain to a keep good relationship with people? 1. Respect 2. Honesty 3. Sincerity 4. Communication 5. Cheerfulness Dodgiest thing that’s happened on air? One thing I can remember was on a ‘Up Close and Personal’ segment. One day I asked the producer to interview a celebrity, an ex finalist for Miss Indonesia. Of course we were expecting a person with the three properties of Miss Indonesia which are ‘beauty, brains and behavior’, but it turned out to be the most boring we ever had. She turned out to be not very communicative and as smart as we thought. No wonder she didn’t win. Ha3x..

Let’s Talk About
HIV/AIDS To
date, the Bali National AIDS commission estimates that a total of 3,390 people out of Bali’s population of around 3,885,000 are infected with HIV and AIDS. Out of the population that are infected, 48.4% of those are aged between 15 to 29 which can be considered a dangerous precedent. It is also estimated that this number will continue to rise and some experts say could even double by the end of this year. As World AIDS day fell on the 1st of December, it’s appropriate that we dedicate this page to help raise awareness, to tackle HIV prejudice and help stop the spread of HIV. Being aware of the facts about HIV and acting on that knowledge to reform behavior are vital steps in taking care of the health and wellbeing of yourself and others, as well as ensuring the treatment of everyone living with HIV fairly and with understanding. Many people do not understand all the ways HIV is transmitted, how it can be prevented, the reality of living with HIV today, or the fact that the number of people diagnosed with HIV has been increasing throughout the island of Bali at an alarming rate. To spread the word about HIV/AIDS, Bali Spirit Festival in cooperation with Yayasan KISARA have formed an outreach program to raise awareness among Balinese women, youth and their families, educating them about the reality of HIV/AIDS and to start an honest and open discussion about the virus and its impact on the community. The outreach program itself is currently effective in three of Bali’s highest rate of HIV/AIDS infection areas which are Denpasar (Sanur), Buleleng and Gianyar. The efforts of the outreach program can hopefully create and become a unique communication program helping to inform, raise awareness and promote understanding of the HIV/ AIDS epidemic within local communities.
078 | beatmag.com
We at The Beat are also taking part in spreading the word of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and hope that everyone, no matter who or where you are, join us and help make a real difference in stopping the spread of HIV/AIDS as well as ending HIV prejudice on this island.

Just Bread
More than
You would think that with the name Bakers Corner, you’d only be getting your daily bread in this place, and you wouldn’t be wrong to an extent because that’s what you’ll see when you enter through the door. Pass the cake and bread stands, however, and you’ll enter into a world of international culinary delight.
E
ntering through the door of Bakers Corner’s main outlet on Jl. Teuku Umar in Denpasar, you’ll be greeted by the sweet aromas of freshly baked bread and the sights of beautifully decorated confectionary, but look past the mouth watering offerings and you’ll see a newly installed lounge area. Beyond that are seating areas for those seeking a more casual place to enjoy meals. The lounge area itself offers comfy high backed

seating in a slightly dimmed area, while the nonlounge area offering simpler seating split into smoking and non-smoking areas. The menu itself consists of a vast array of international cuisine, offering choices of Chinese, Indonesian, pastas and sandwiches sure to fill your belly without blowing a hole in your wallet. The drink menu also boasts its own mini booklet, but
those wanting a drink with a little more kick will have to look elsewhere as this is a family restaurant so the only booze you might come across is a beer. If you happen to be craving a caffeine fix, the choices of chilled or hot caffeinated beverages will surely complete you. Amongst the choices available on the menu, we were lucky enough to sample the latest Indonesian selection recently added to the menu. The Ayam Kremes or crispy chicken (Rp50K) is a traditional delicacy from the island of Java with a modern twist, featuring a large chicken quarter enveloped in a crunchy batter served with rice, fried tofu, raw vegetables and spicy sambal to excite the palette. The second meal we sampled was the crispy duck (Rp80K), a quite revered Balinese specialty consisting of half a duck marinated in traditional herbs and spices and fried to a crisp on the outside yet still juicy inside. As all local meals are served, you also get rice, sambal and vegetables to accompany the meal. Both meals are quite filling and sure to satisfy anyone’s hunger. Never wanting to leave our whistles dry, to quench our thirst we sampled the blueberry smoothie (Rp31.5K) which was refreshing and tasted very healthy, if you can imagine a flavour like that. For our caffeine fix we chose a creamy and chilled mocha chip (Rp25K) which tasted more like a dessert than a drink but was still a good caffeine high. To round the whole meal off, we sampled the Bakers Corner es special (Rp30.5K), which was filled with fresh fruit and crushed ice and topped with sweetened condensed milk and sweet strawberry syrup. The desert maybe a little too sweet for a Westerner’s tongue, but is quite pleasing for any sweet tooth addict out there, especially on a boiling hot day. If you happen to be heading far from the beaches of Kuta and decide to venture to Denpasar, Bakers corner is sure to provide you with whatever kind of meal you may be searching for. And why not grab some of the freshly baked offerings before you leave to remind you that you just came out of a bakery.

Lemongrass For this edition, we’d like to focus one of the most important ingredients that is familiar to any Indonesian food, lemongrass! Usually lemongrass is one of the ingredients used to make sambal, especially sambal matah (raw sambal). Envy restaurant has a special burger accompanied by sambal matah which consists of lemon grass inside. Hendra’s heavenly chicken burger is a grilled chicken breast sliced on a bun with a lemongrass and shallot sambal on the side. From a medicinal perspective, lemongrass is known to contain antibacterial and antifungal properties and helps to detoxify the liver, pancreas, kidney, bladder and the digestive tract. Truly Indonesia
Indonesian tastes for a traveler’s appetite…
RUJAK CINGUR Rujak cingur is one of the most famous signature foods from Surabaya (East Java) made from a variety of fruits (kedondong, young mango, starfruit, pineapple, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, fresh cucumber), vegetables (boiled krai, kale, beans, bean sprouts), fried tempe, fried tofu, rice cakes (lontong), cingur (cow’s nose) and crackers. It’s truly nutritious and healthy, but for those who have never tried it, the first challenge is in the presentation. The mixed black marinade doesn’t look particularly appetising, the black colour a result of mixed shrimp paste with chili, peanuts, fried garlic and young banana (pisang batu), but rest assured - the delicious proof is in the pudding. 098 | beatmag.com

The Only Indoor Pressure Smoker. Combining a pressure cooker and smoker in one appliance, this is the indoor pressure smoker that cooks barbecue brisket in only one hour - five times faster than traditional methods. The device increases the internal pressure by 15 psi, cooking food up to 70% faster while causing wood chips to release their fragrant, flavor-enhancing smoke. The internal chamber requires only three to five wood chips (not included) to impart authentic barbecue smoke flavour onto food and all of the hot smoke is contained inside the vessel until the pressure is released. An adjustable four-level rack holds up to 4 lbs. of food, from sausages and ribs to a whole chicken. TheWorld is my Stage
Cok Sawitri Concept
Cok Sawitri doesn’t believe that talent alone makes an artist. It’s discipline, hard work and deep observation of character that helps her to delve into art exploration. She believes that the process of learning is a never ending process, whatever age you may be. Her choice to become an artist as well as choosing the stage as her canvas of expression is a choice she exemplifies through totality and sincerity. Through art she is able to express the complexities of life as well as integrate the much finer details. Cok Sawitri is known to be contemplative with her work and is never easily shaken by conflicting ideals. She believes that art is something beautiful that must be respected and that all artists are remarkable.
