New Year’s Eve arrived with relative calm. Most parts of Bali were packed to the gills for the night and all matter of choices were available for tourists and locals to enjoy a big night out. The rain didn’t help, but people just got on with in great Bali style. We have the night covered in a photo-feature inside. 2011 looks set to be another blockbuster year on Bali. Sometimes I have the feeling that all the changes and development that we’ve been seeing over the past few years is just the tip of the iceberg. There’s a load more of everything imaginable on the way; tourists, hotels, restaurants, bars, and people coming to live here. It appears to be unstoppable. I won’t go on about the downside of such rapid, unchecked development. I imagine that the debate on that will go on for sometime to come. No, I want to rejoice in the way it is, the way everything is crammed in, roads so narrow you can’t get two cars properly down them, and houses, restaurants and people stacked on top of each other, making it so much easier to get from place to place – as long as you aren’t driving. That’s the Kuta Seminyak part of Bali and don’t we love it? Of course we do. Read inside for all the juice on what’s happening around town in the next couple of weeks and there’s plenty of it. Thanks for your support and hope you all have a great stay on the island of Bali for this beginning of 2011.

Scoop Hard Rock Hotel Bali New Water Park Hard Rock Hotel Bali is proud to announce the newest additions to its swimming pool area with a kids adventure water park and two water slides. With the brand new water playground and a full array of activity programs, there is enough to keep even the most active of families entertained. Tell your kids to be the first to take a ride down the new water slides and make a splash at Bali’s newest watery attraction. Hard Rock Hotel Bali has the largest free-form swimming pool in Bali, featuring a unique Sand Island, which not only makes it a sunbathing paradise, but also serves as a stage for outdoor performances and volleyball matches. Keep the kids cool with the new water attractions, while you enjoy the thrill of the largest and most exciting pool in Bali.

New Kuta Green Park Opens at Pecatu

Ne-Yo

PT Bali Pecatu Graha (BPG) inaugurated the New Kuta Green Park - a new water recreation park at Pecatu - on Sunday, December 26th. The threehectare tourist attraction offers a range of activities including flying fox, paintball area and bungee trampoline in addition to a wide range of water attractions. The park’s location adjacent to the New Kuta Golf Course offers magnificent views of the Indian Ocean and Balangan beach. The entry fees for locals range from Rp35K up to Rp 40K, while foreigners will have to pay Rp100K (US$11) with a special price available for members.

After word of Sentra Live! bringing Chris Brown and Ne-Yo to Jakarta sometime this month, and rumours of how the artists involved declined the offer to perform (despite several tickets having already been sold), many thought the deal had gone bust. However, Sentra Live! has finally shed some light on the matter, reporting that the concert is still on but will only feature Ne-Yo and that the date has been pushed back to the 22nd of January. Ne-Yo’s concert will be in part to promote his latest album ‘Libra Scale’ and will be held at Istora Senayan. He will be sharing the stage with local talents Maliq & D’Essentials and Ello. Those who’ve already purchased tickets for the previous concert have the option to return the tickets or to settle to see Ne-Yo minus Chris Brown on stage.

Scoop International Day of Italian Cuisine Three Italian chefs, each working from their respective kitchens in Bali, will participate in the 4th Annual International Day of Italian Cuisine to take place on Monday, January 17th, 2011. The trio of Bali-based chefs will join a global group of 1,000 fellow Italian chefs all preparing a deceptively simple dish - Pesto alla Genovese - on that date. One of the three chefs joining the culinary campaign is Giordano Fagioli of the AYANA Resort and Spa Bali, who will present this well-known dish with a few modern touches not often seen in traditional methods. To celebrate this annual day of Italian cuisine why not visit the three chefs at each Bali location as they present their individual versions of this ubiquitous Italian favourite. They are: Chef Giorano Faggioli – Executive Chef, AYANA Resort and Spa Bali at Jimbaran. Massimo Sacco – Owner-chef, Da Massimo Restaurant in Sanur, Michele Greggio – Executive Chef, Puri Jimbaran Resort, Jimbaran.

Bali Requests UNESCO Geopark Status for Mount Batur The Indonesian government is seeking to have the Mount Batur National Park, located in the regency of Bangli in Bali, included in the UNESCO network of Global Geoparks. UNESCO Geoparks are recognized by the United Nations as “a territory encompassing one or more sites of scientific importance, not only for geological reasons but also by virtue of its archaeological, ecological or cultural value.” The director of promotions at the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Achyaruddin, sees geopark status as important for increasing tourist numbers to a specific destination. The government is lobbying for geopark status for both the Mount Batur site and for the Pacitan nature reserve area of East Java. Only two other Southeast Asian districts - Langkawi in Malaysia and Dong Van Karst in Vietnam - have qualified for geopark status from UNESCO.

Dhyana Pura’s New Chill out Spot The construction walls have finally come down and the previously unknown white building on Dhyana Pura has been named as Maria Magdalena. Seemingly devoid of any religious ties excepting the name, Maria Magdalena is the little sister of JP’s Warung - housing a chill out bar downstairs and two large billiard tables on the second floor. Sometime this year, JP’s Warung will undergo renovation to connect both venues with the stage being moved further to the back. A sushi place will also be set at the back of Maria Magdalena to cater to those after some good Japanese grub.

Crazy P cocoon | wed 8 jan | 10PM Sounds Like Disco House / Electronica / Live Electronics Hails From Nottingham, UK

Have Been Crazy P started out as a duo made up of Jim Baron and Chris Todd, who met up at Nottingham University where they were studying to further themselves, but instead sat around smoking fags and trying to make records. They finally succeeded in making a record which they titled ‘Digging Deeper’ and was released under Musica Vitae label, which happened to be run by a friend of Jim’s. As requests for live appearances started to pour in, Jim and Chris realized they couldn’t do it all on their own, so a new recruit Tim Davies was added making it three. Usually an instrumental band, they wanted to add something new to the mix and it came in the form of Danielle Moore. To round the whole band off they added Mav on percussion to complete the Crazy P formation. are Now With their hits receiving regular airplay in the UK, hitting the buzz chart on Radio1, Crazy P have also made it big Downunder as well as in New Zealand. The group will be bringing their beats to Cocoon on the 8th of January. Be sure not to miss their show.

Oded Peled Deja’vu | sat 8 jan | 10PM Sounds Like House Music Hails From Helsinki, Finland

Has Been Oded’s affair with the night life started at the age of 16 and what he heard, saw and felt got him interested in music. After a move to Finland and getting a turntable from his mother, Oded secured some gigs and started to build a name for himself. The big turning point in Oded’s club-land life was when he was 19, and he and his brother started Misc Management in 1999, which was supposed to be an office concentrating in promoting and booking Finnish artists abroad but ended up being one of the biggest promoters of dance music and foreign DJs in the country and the rest of Scandinavia. Oded’s time in the studio has resulted in a couple of vinyl releases, appearances on compilations such as Underwater Records and in the record cases of some of his personal heroes such as Josh Wink, Joe Clausell, Orlando Voorn, Laurent Garnier and Derrick May. Aside from his continuous gigs in Finland, he has DJ’ed in 20 different countries. is Now Taking some time off from his hectic schedule, Oded Peled will be making his way back to Bali with intent to escape the cold of Finland and enjoy the heat of Bali. He’ll be spinning out his hits on the 8th of January at Deja’vu.

Arrested Development

If you were a child of the 90’s and not into the Grunge of that era, you will have definitely heard of the hip hop group Arrested Development. The Beat gets a chance for a one-on-one interview with Speech from Arrested Development.

Arrested Development is currently touring to promote your latest album ‘Stronger’, what’s the whole story about the songs and the album itself?

Ahhh…sorry about the wrong album name, I must have been thinking of a different artist. Anyway, you may get this question asked many times, but it’s one that I’ve always been meaning to ask, in the song ‘Mr. Wendal’ it talks about a wise homeless guy. Does Mr. Wendal truly exist and what’s the whole story about him?

SPEECH: Well, for starters, the albums called “STRONG” as opposed to ‘STRONGER’, apparently we’re not THAT confident, just yet to name an album stronger. ;-). The album is a call to action for those who want more balance on hip hop music. Songs like “Let your voice be heard” and “Bloody” get straight to the heart of that call! (The first two songs on the album). But there are more fun and simple songs on the album too. Songs like “La la la” are simple and plain fun.

beatmag.com 038

SPEECH: Mr. Wendal is about the perception that the Western idea of civilized should always be up for reevaluation. Atrocities like slavery, colonialism, the Iraq war and the oil spill are good examples of a lack of civilized behavior. Mr Wendal is also about the simplest among us, who have opted out of the “game playing”, I think we can learn from them.

After Arrested Development’s first album ‘3 Years, 5 Months & 2 Days in the Life Of...’ in ’92 you guys took a quite long hiatus before returning to the scene in 2000. Why the long wait between albums? SPEECH: We did a second album called, Zingalamaduni. It was nominated for a Grammy and had some critical acclaim, but it was poorly promoted and the band was stuck in a over-saturated pickle. We were music industry and media “darlings” without great support from our label, or inner management. Plus internally, the immediate success took a toll on us, and we simply needed a scream from it all. I’m very glad we did take a break; we have enjoyed some “normalcy” raising children and becoming whole people again. I’ve written a book, called “What is success?” And I also have a solo career that came from a good relaxing time in life. From the message laden songs of your first album, we see a change to a more upbeat and dance driven tracks like ‘Honeymoon day’ in your later album. Why is that? SPEECH: Like any band, over the years you have to re create yourself to stay juiced up and creative, that album and song was a very experimental time for us. It allowed us to stretch out a bit musically and melodically. We never knew how big a hit it was in certain places until we toured there! Even the song, “Honeymoon day” has a pretty unique message in it compared to many songs of this day. Speaking about sex WITHIN a marriage is rare today. Usually, it’s all about sex outside of a marriage you hear about and TV shows, comedians, etc, make fun of married sex life.

onthemic.

onthemic.

onthemic.

With thousands of albums sold throughout the world and two Grammy awards under your belt, what are the hopes for the latest album ‘Strong’? SPEECH: To date we’ve sold over 5 million albums, we’ve had an incredible run. My hope for this new album, STRONG, is to re-group, re-focus our energy towards getting people into the mode of conscious thinking. Traveling around the world, where would you say would be the best place you’ve toured through? SPEECH: Wow, that’s a hard one, cuz everywhere we’ve been has been pretty special, but AUSTRALIA, JAPAN, CANADA and FRANCE stick out. And where would you say was the wildest crowd? SPEECH: Our shows are very heavy with crowd participation, and high energy, so every show is pretty WILD! The most wild would have to be NEW YORK! Would this be the band’s first time in Bali? What do you expect the crowd to be like? SPEECH: We expect it to be fun, and probably a bit of a surprise from the fans, cuz they don’t know what’s about to hit em. We tend to have an affect on people, an element of surprise. I’m sure Bali will blow us away! Shout out to your fans in Bali? Much Love to all our fans there! We look forward to seeing you LIVE for this first time ever upcoming celebration!

People have come to describe your music as Afrocentric alternative hip hop, but in your own words how would you describe your music? SPEECH: We describe it as honest hip hop, that of course, uses many other influences from other genres. We stay away from all the labels that divide us from the music style we love (hiphop). The labels tend to separate us from other artists, when in reality we’re all from the same place, we just express our “truth” differently.

Catch the group in all its glory and get down to all their award winning hits when they arrive in Bali to perform at Hard Rock Café on the 16th of January.

So, tell us who you are and why you’re so revered in the world of music? Well, if I have to tell you then I guess im not revered, but to answer the question, I’m a musician, producer, writer, singer, film maker, director, and performance and conceptual artist. Hope I didn’t leave anything out. DJ, musician or rockstar, which would you say is more fitting to describe you and why? I actually want to add more rather then pick one. I’m a musician, producer, writer, singer, film maker, director, and performance and conceptual artist You’re recent tour through US & Canada was titled Peaches Christ Superstar, really catchy if I do say so myself. Who came up with title, and what was the whole concept of the tour? Peaches Christ Superstar is Peaches, me, performing / singing the entire Jesus Christ Superstar, the 70s rock opera, The entire orchestration is played on piano by Chilly Gonzales. What have been some of your wildest experiences on the international scene to date? Every day is a wild ride. Meeting people you never thought you would. Playing places you never dreamed of. Its all amazing. If given the chance to collaborate with any musician alive or dead, who would you choose and why? The list is long. Nina Simone, Grace Jones, Josephine Baker, Mae West…there are just too many. You should have just stuck with the living ones, but it would still be too long! What have been the best moments for you over the last year? There have been so many, I’m sorry. I‘ve done so many things this year. Just check my blog www. peachesofficialblog.com if you want the full run down. Other than dealing with music, what else do you do to indulge your intellectual side? I’m a musician producer writer singer film maker director performance and conceptual artist, so that’s pretty much what keeps me busy. How do you see yourself in the next 10 years? To be honest, I’m sure I will just explode with more music and art. If you were on death row (god forbids that ever happens

to you), what would you request for your last meal? That is easy. I would eat all the crap food that is so good for 5 minutes and then makes you feel so sick like you want to die. Kraft mac and cheese and Macdonalds! (I never eat those things but I have childhood memories of their taste and addiction). Your last performance in Bali, we saw you don unusual costumes, what can we expect this time round? I will be DJing and putting the focus on making people dance! When all tours are done, where would you choose to go to relax and unwind? Bali seems like a good place for that! Get ready to dance and get wild when Peaches gets behind the deck of Hu’u next week on the 12th of January.

66 Even with a backdrop of hideous and rampant fireworks (that should be banned from the streets), heavy down pours of rain and constant drizzle, New Year’s Eve this year was a huge success all over town. Hot spots like Kuta were ram packed with tourists and locals like always, with a heavy police presence and roads closed to keep things under wraps. Most Seminyak streets were also suffering traffic jams from start to finish, with cars abandoned in the middle of the streets leaving people trying to make it by foot to their favorite venues. Early heavy rains and streets full of water made the trip even more difficult. The last 66 NYE (before they are rumoured to close later this year) was heaving with approx 6ooo people through the doors - an end of a long and famous saga perhaps, but time will tell if it does come to fruition or not. Parties rocked on till dawn including the newly renovated and larger DeeJay Club in Kuta which was also packed to the rafters by daylight. Another crazy New Year’s Eve passes leaving us all with tales to tell and another fresh year to behold, wiping the slate clean and rejoicing once more in what we have here and now. The

Year they

came

As we say farewell to 2010, here’s a little look back at the things that made the last year a year worth being around for‌

The year kicked off with a bang with Steve Aoki gracing the stage at Klapa early in January giving us an insight of what was to come. DJs of the likes of Sebastian Gamboa, Pablo Cebalo, Boy George, Louie Vega, Ferry Corsten, Shapeshifters, Stapford Brothers and many others brought their disc bags and beats to entrance the Bali crowd. Even just before the year ended the superstar DJ himself, Bob Sinclar, made a surprise stopover in Bali to spin out his remixes at The Stones. People into the thrashing guitars and hard hitting drums of live music were in for a treat with some great bands also making their way to the island. The Living End, Temper Trap, Peaches and Ian Brown were amongst the list and many Indonesian bands took to the stage like NAIF, /Rif, Cokelat, Geisha and the list goes on. The most surprising performance was a not so secret show by Australian band Wolfmother, who just finished a gig in Jakarta and stopped off to give a surprise performance at the new Deus in Canggu. More classic artists like Carlton J. Smith who performed at SOS twice this year and just recently, music maestro Keith Martin at Klapa serenaded many a smooching crowd.

wolfmother

Several new places also opened there doors this year, from small hangouts offering light entertainment to massive venues with the capacity to engulf a football field. The places that really stood out this year were Boshe, which continues to bring in great performers, Cocoon serving up great fine dining and a grooving outdoor vibe on Seminyak beach, The Stones, with its ritzy style on Kuta beach and just before the end of 2010, we welcomed Potato Head on Petitenget beach to the fray. So many great things happened in 2010, and they continue coming. W Hotel is sure to make a splash in early 2011 and more and more is sprouting up everywhere every day. Whatever the following year has in store for us, we just hope it all comes together nicely and respectfully in the Balinese way.

‘’From Dope to Hope’’ Well known as a national pro-skateboarder spending 13 years under the Volcom flag and winning numerous competitions, Indra became an athlete reaching rock star status. Once a ‘party-hard risk everything do anything’ kind of skater, he has ended up becoming a saint on a mission. Indra Kubon tells us how his once dangerous rock star life style has transformed into spiritual growth.

beatmag.com 058

You’ve spent most of your life within the extreme sports scene/culture for more than a decade now, and built your own career around it. What sort of thing inspired you to first ‘get on board‘, so to say? At first my brother taught me the ropes; we used to skate together and I was inspired to be better than him one day, like many siblings do. Considered an extreme sport, skateboarding is a risky activity. Tell us about any major injuries or interesting scars you’ve endured. I broke my left arm, but it was so long ago maybe around 10 years ago. I was only 16 at the time, and it’s all healed up now. During your career as a skateboarder, you’ve won numerous competitions and accolades, which of them are you most proud of? I don’t know how I can only be proud of only one achievement because all I’ve gained was through my own blood, sweat, tears and prayers. There was a time when my life was defined only to win skate competitions and be the best in Indonesia, but now I don’t find much value or self-worth in those types of achievements. What sponsors have backed you up in reaching your success? I’ve been riding for Volcom Indonesia for close to 13 years now. Just recently, in June I returned to be a part of Electric Indo… and I feel so blessed to be with them again. What’s to come for you in 2011 outside of the skating circle? This last year, I’ve been volunteering with Global Church and the Bali Surf House. I’m excited about new opportunities to share the word of the lord with people through these acts, and I’m also excited about what God’s going to continue to hand to me in years to come. Back in the day, many considered Indra Kubon as the rock star of the skateboarding scene, what did you do to get that recognition? You could say I lost my head when the popularity of winning competitions got to me. Money was

not a big problem thanks to the sponsors, and I just partied away like there was no tomorrow. On the outside, I may have looked like I achieved the dream life, but my heart was empty. And now, the same people see you as a saint. Tell us about that, what caused the spiritual transition? It all happened last year, precisely on September 9th, 2009 (9.9.09). That night, I met God in a club in Bali! Yea, it sounds very strange, I know, but I guess the holy one works in mysterious ways. I don’t want to sound corny, but I heard a voice and under the blinding lights of the club I felt my hardened heart melt. I just knew at that moment a higher power had touched me. From then on I came to know the Bible and understood what happened to me was a calling. You’ve declared ‘freedom’ after the transition. What sort of freedom do you mean? Freedom from my old self…Free from the bondages of sin and selfishness. Now I have a new life – one of love, joy, and peace. Tell us how good life is now for you... Life is real Good Interview by Dedi Kristian

I Blame Coco The Constant

Jimmy Eat World Invented

“Oh, she’s Sting’s daughter…” was my first thought before even listening to her music. Eliot Paulina Sumner began writing seriously at 15, and named her band after her early demo titled ‘I Blame Coco’. Surprisingly (or perhaps not really if you think of her father’s influence) she signed a major deal with Island Records gaining world wide recognition. About the music - the word ‘electropop’ comes to mind and is a good representation of the whole album. Artsy touches are added here and there with slight tendencies of rock, drum ‘n bass, giving a garaged finish on many of the songs. The album is good enough to ignite some emotions, have a listen before you right her off as just another daughter of a big star.

Not much greatness is noted in this album, but that doesn’t mean that these Arizona boys lack any luster or interest in their work. Being too attached to their previous albums ‘Futures’ and ‘Chase the Light’ which seem to be miles apart from this latest outing, so you can count me out for praising Invented. Slow-stepping vocals, digitized beats and heartsick keys might impress some fans, but this album just doesn’t seem to impress compared to their older hits and fans like me will notice. There are still strong points in several songs that would offer this album a chance and that would be the deeper lyrics. Let’s hope Jimmy hasn’t lost its appetite to eat the world with their next album.

Truly Indonesia

Indonesian tastes for a traveler’s appetite…

Pempek Palembang The island of Sumatra is full of various delicacies with influences from the many ancient travelers that passed through there many centuries ago. Palembang in South Sumatra for instance, has a dish called pempek or locally known as empek-empek which has its origins from China. This fish cake made from a mixture of ground fish meat is combined with sago to form a gooey consistency. The Chinese method of cooking the fish cake was to steam it but the people of Palembang fried it and put an extra twist by topping it off with a vinegar sauce they called cuko. The sauce is made from a mixture of vinegar, palm sugar, ground baby shrimp, chili and garlic. Pempek comes in an assortment of shapes and sizes but the most popular is the ‘kapal selam’ (submarine) where an egg is placed inside the fish cake and then shaped like a submarine, hence the name. If you’re into spicy and sour flavors, this traditional dish from Palembang will suit your palette just fine. beatmag.com 070

ave you ever felt the pangs of hunger while walking on Double Six Beach but just couldn’t be bothered putting your flip-flops back on just to get something to eat? Well, your solution is here in the form of Sandpit, a little shack restaurant offering a wide array of food and drinks often only ever found at upmarket places. Located on the beach directly across the street from Double Six club, this little shack may not look so interesting from the street, but the moment you cross over the wall onto the beach, you’ll be greeted by white wooden chairs in the sand and a rustic looking wooden shack with a bar. Chalk boards surround the bar area announcing the specials of the day. The whole look is reminiscent of those classic surfing flicks from the sixties. Don’t be fooled by the minimalistic shack style of the decor, as the variety of food and beverages offered at the Sandpit are that of any upscale restaurant, but with the option of going barefoot. One of the most popular items on Sandpits menu and a positive must try is the Club Sandwich (Rp26K) served with roasted potato wedges is a great pick me up after a swim on the beach. Another light yet delicious hunger buster is the Caramalized Pineapple Chicken (Rp37K) bathed in a sweet yet savory honey lemon sauce, served with a refreshing fresh salad on the side. If you happen to come with a larger appetite, the Chefs Menu Seafood Combo (Rp150K) is sure to fill any empty belly. Consisting of nearly every seafood item on the menu grilled to perfection, served with three spicy sambals, the freshness and flavors are very reminiscent of the golden days of Jimbaran. Something famous from the hawker stalls of Malaysia, Chili Crab (Rp50K) also finds its way to the menu but with a lighter and less spicy sauce like you would find in its place of origin. The beverages offered are various, from fresh juices and mocktails to a select number of specially created cocktails and all at very reasonable prices. The proprietors of the place strive to bring quality food at an affordable price and in my honest opinion they’ve succeeded. [Rinaldi]

Gizmos

THE LATEST, GREATEST GADGETS TO GET YOUR HANDS ON

The Carpal Tunnel Preventing Mouse

This is the wireless mouse that matches the natural movements of your hand and wrist to prevent carpal tunnel syndrome. Unlike the typical mouse that imposes a fixed position for a user’s wrist--a leading cause for Repetitive Stress Injury--this mouse tilts and pivots around a pedestal that serves as its base, providing comfortable, relaxed flexion for the wrist, reducing cramping and fatigue. The pedestal’s bottom glides over a mousepad when used, communicating with a computer running Windows 7, Vista, or XP or a Mac using its USB wireless adapter. It has a left and right button and a scroll wheel. Two AA batteries (included) provide 10 months of operation. $49.95 http://www.hammacher.com/

The Instant Cold Or Hot Rechargeable Compress

This is the device that instantly emits cold or heat to treat muscle aches and joint pain. The handheld device’s aluminum head heats to 110º F or cools to 40º F--the ideal temperatures for thermo- and cryo-therapies--in 45 seconds, relieving swelling or facilitating blood flow to help heal injuries. Eliminating the hassle of being tethered to a heating pad or refreezing a cold pack, the device is smaller than a television remote and its head swivels 90º, allowing you to easily position it against your body. A toggle switch changes it from heat to cold application instantly. $129.95 http://www.coolest-gadgets.com

MAPTOR

Unfolding and refolding a paper map is annoying and inconvenient. It is also difficult to find exactly where you are on a paper map. By downloading a map on a Maptor device, you can project a map onto any surface (the wall, ground or hand). The embedded GPS function indicates your exact location. http:// www.idsa.org/content/content1/maptor

LG OPTIMUS I P500

The LG Optimus One P500 has a very nice design with a stylish look. It is a sleek phone with the standard touchscreen candybar form factor. With dimensions of 113.5 x 59 x 13.3 mm and a weight of just 129 gms, it is quite compact and easily pocketable. It sports a 3.2 inch TFT capacitive touchscreen display with a resolution of 320 x 480 pixels. 3.2 inches is the minimum display size an Android device should have, any lower than that and the Android experience starts deteriorating rapidly. The LG Optimus One P500 is a capable phone when it comes to hardware. Compared to other budget Android phones, it sports relatively better hardware specs. It comes with a 600 MHz ARM processor and 419 MB of RAM. It has 170 MB of internal storage and supports up to 32 GB microSD cards. It runs Android 2.2 Froyo with a modified UI shell. Except for a few frills, LG has mostly left the Android OS alone, which is a very good thing. Cellular World. Jl Teuku Umar no 60 (Denpasar) RP. 2,890,000

It can also display videos at 16:9 aspect ratio--the same used by high definition televisions. The 15watt LED has a 30,000-hour lifespan and provides a brilliant 800 lumens for clear, bright pictures and videos. Manual focus. Plugs into AC with included adapter. CardSharp Folding Credit Card Knife

While not as robust a multitasker as even a basic Swiss Army Knife, this folding credit card blade from Iain Sinclair looks far more compact and smuggle-friendly as you can keep it stashed away in your wallet. It weighs just 13 grams, is only 2mm thick and features a stainless steel blade with a healthy 65mm cutting edge and a short serrated edge on the opposite side. When folded away a built-in sheath prevents you from accidentally touching the sharp blade, and since I’m sure you’re having as hard a time as I did envisioning how it does fold/unfold. http:// www.ohgizmo.com/ $23

Balance Brain through Art

by I Made Windu Segara Senet

The theme of this dynamic exhibition by the young Balinese artist I Made Windu Segara Senet is related to the scientific knowledge that the human brain is split in two distinct halves. Each half is responsible for different aspects of one’s characteristics. The left is said to control the right side of our body and considered the centre of our analytical abilities. On the other hand, the right side of our brain controls the left side of the body, which controls creativity, emotions and dreams. Senet proposes to use art to achieve balance for both hemispheres of the brain. Like in Balinese Hinduism where one seeks to maintain stability through numerous polar opposites, his abstract works of art unify different aspects that converge into one.

WHOSE CANVAS IS THIS ?

N YOM AN SURA Born : 10 April 1976

Concept

Like many artists, Nyoman Sura draws inspiration for his dances from nature. Utilising simple props such as a large piece of fabric, a mask or even an ordinary hand fan, Nyoman has the ability to make them all part of a prolific performance. Such props can be seen in his ‘Bulan Mati’ performance in the Indonesia Dance Forum where he waves around a piece of white fabric 8 meters long and 3 meters wide to symbolize the gentle moonlight.

Exhibition

From 1995 to the end of the millennium Nyoman was a regular winner of the Best Choreography award at the LCKG. Tired of always working behind the scenes, he decided to step on stage for his first big solo in the public eye at the Indonesian Dance Festival in 2004 which was held at Taman Ismail Marzuki, Jakarta. His success led him to create many unique dances such as Bulan Mati, Seribu Wajah, Dua - 1, Ritus Legong and many others. He has now presented his dance all over the world.
