ust another week in the life of the big town. If you have been following the TBD (The Beat Daily) you may be getting a little worried about the state of play on the island lately. With loads of crime going on around us recently it may seem things are coming adrift on the island of the gods or is it just that it’s only now you are beginning to hear about it? Some people would perhaps prefer to stick their heads in the sand and make believe that nothing ever happens or it’s best not to talk about it or whatever their argument is, but many others around the island would prefer to know and to take action about it – to be kept informed. Anything can happen in this place as Chef PM found out last week. After appearing on 98.5fm’s Drive Time show with DJ SD, your’s truly, on the Friday night, he went home later and had to beat off ninja home invaders who entered his house. Nasty business, but as Phil said after, it could happen anywhere on the planet at any time, so best all you folks don’t get too worried, and just tune into the beat daily (log onto beatmag.com for details) for all the latest news. A big dog helps too. Meanwhile, on more salubrious subjects, once again we have a swath of big shows coming our way including the Stanton Warriors at Potato Head Beach Club, Abel Ramos at Boshe, Aussie flamboyance with Vandalism at Klapa, and in the not too distant future, Iron Maiden at one of the best venues on the island and in the country, GWK’s Lotus Pond. All the usual spots will be firing too over the next two weeks with first Chinese New Year and then not far behind, Valentine’s Day rocking our world. Check the What’s On and HereNow sections for the full goose on the action juice. Comments from our VIP Card members. I was actually pleasantly surprised when I first saw the magazine, because I didn’t know there was such a complete written coverage of the entertainment in the Kuta-Seminyak area. I am not familiar enough with the nightlife to tell you what I think could be improved about the magazine, the only thing I noticed so far is that 61 Legian Sky Garden, on of my favourite nightspots, is not mentioned in it. The magazine has a pleasant size and is free, so my first impression is a good one! Being a professional quality manager I am always on the lookout for improvement opportunities. I will therefore not hesitate to let you know any others that I find, In the meantime, keep up the good work! Rob Ed. Thanks for your comments, Rob. Sky Garden will be back in the fold soon, there’s no doubting that. We enjoy going down there too. One of our new writers, Rusty likes to visit Kuta too, which you can read about in his story delving into the differences between Kuta and Seminyak – the Great Divide further inside. Enjoy that VIP Card, ok!

Scoop Superman Is Dead Break Into US Billboard Chart The American music magazine Billboard has just introduced a new ‘Unchartered’ section to its magazine. It is, according to their press release, a weekly ranking of emerging artists who have yet to appear on a major Billboard chart, but are mapping new territory in online fan engagement. With their 1.6 million fans on Facebook, the punk rock band from Bali, Superman Is Dead have reached no. 23. According to Rolling Stone Indonesia, they are the first Indonesian band to appear on Uncharted, and the second ever in Indonesian music history to make it into Billboard after Anggun, who reached no. 22 with “Snow on Sahara” in September 1998. Uncharted artists are ranked by Heat Score - a formula incorporating that week’s streamed plays, page views and fans according MySpace Music, as well as sources tracked by online aggregator Next Big Sound, which includes YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Last.fm and others. Bali Named Top Destination in Asia Travel booking portal Wotif.com has revealed that Bali was the most popular Asian destination for its customers last year. Our little island saw more bookings than any other Asian destination, knocking Singapore off the top spot, which it has held for the last three years. In fact, Singapore fell two places with Hong Kong in second position, while the Thai hotspots of Bangkok and Phuket were in fourth and fifth place respectively. Wotif.com believes that traveller numbers to Bali are set to continue growing thanks to the continuing popularity of last year’s ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ film starring Julia Roberts. Other reasons for people coming to Bali include the culture, the people, the landscape and the affordable cost of living. Let’s not forget the beaches, the lifestyle and the nightlife can also be quite infectious. A Hollywood movie can help of course but it’s only part of the story. [From TBD www.beatmag.com]

Name, rank & number? Dominic Butler - Warrior What is most enjoyable, starting from ‘scratch’, or remixing a track by another artist? What is the most enjoyable is doing either, but then playing out the said track for the 1st time to a big crowd. What have been the most memorable sessions to date and with whom? There have been so many. L.A Vancouver, Sydney and London all stand out of late. In London we’ve flown in such names as Grandmaster Flash through to Pendulum. How do you rate the current UK breakbeat scene? We don’t think in terms of scenes. What we do seems to be working really well, so we just focus on that. What do you expect from the crowd at Potato Head? We expect an up for it, friendly, mental, knowledgeable, sun tanned crowd. Did someone say ‘afterparty’? “Tripping over a manhole cover in London gave them their name”: Explain. The manhole cover had ‘Stanton warriors’ engraved on it. I guess it’s literally the entrance to the underground... Have you met (underground UK graffiti artist) Banksy? Yes I have. Your studio was ripped off by thieves resulting in the loss of all your gear - not to mention untold hours of samples, tracks and material: How did you work up the motivation to pick it up again after such a catastrophic loss? We got drunk and shouted at local crack heads. It didn’t help though. Dark day. What is Damon Albarn like to work with? A nice guy. Lives locally in West London. Where are you most at home - studio or DJ booth? Hmm the afterparty. We have a reputation to hold up.

beatmag.com 040

You’ve toured a bit “from Kazakhstan to Australia, Dubai to Vietnam, China to Spain and back again”. Any mad travel stories? Many. Cambodia last year was an eye opener as was Israel and South Africa. We love adventure and seek it out. Have you been to Bali before? Never been before. We heard you had mad parties there so jumped at the chance when invited. Very excited about the gig. Any words of wisdom for aspiring DJs here in Indonesia? Keep it fresh and stay that way. Originate don’t duplicate. Catch the power house duo when they perform at Potato Head Beach Club on the 4th of February. You can bet we’ll be at the afterparty!

Abel Ramos Boshe | Sat 5 Feb | 10PM Sounds Like House Hails From Madrid, Spain

Has Been Dubbed breakthrough DJ/Producer of 2009 by house music legend Roger Sanchez, you know Abel Ramos’s skills are up to par. Abel started DJing at a local club when he was merely 15 years old, barely old enough to drink and playing anything that was synth-driven. It didn’t take long for Abel to establish himself as one of Spain’s most talented DJs, catching the ears of thousands and winning awards such as ‘Best National DJ’ from Deejay Magazine along the way, as well as securing top gigs around the globe. From DJing to producing, Abel’s hard, techy beats have caught the attention of labels throughout the world, including Swedish hotshot Axwell who signed one of his first productions ‘Rotterdam City of Love’. Abel continues to wow his peers with his never-ending creativity in remixing and producing tracks. is Now Ramos is no stranger to the Bali crowd - it seems like Bali has become Abel’s annual stomping ground every year. This is definitely not his first time in Bali, but will be his first time to spin for the crowd of Boshe. Don’t miss his performance on the 5th of February.

Armada Band Boshe | fri 18 Feb | 10PM Sound Like Melancholic pop

Hail From Jakarta

Have Been Armada Band may still be a new name in Indonesian music, but the members of the band have spent some time on the local music scene. Before being known as Armada Band, members Rizal (vocals), Endra (bass), Andith (drums), Mai (guitar) and Radha (guitar) were previously known as the Kertas - only changing their name before the release of their debut album in 2008. Their first album titled ‘Balas Dendam’ spawned the single ‘Gagal Bercinta’ which became an overnight success, getting much airplay on radios around the capital. Dubbing their style of music as ‘melancholic pop’ originating from the melancholic vocals of Rizal and the simple pop beat played by the band, the music is reminiscent of classic Indonesian bands from the early 70’s. In 2009, the band released their second album ‘Hal Terbesar’ with the hit single ‘Bika Hatimu’ which was one of the top RBT’s on Telkomsel’s hit list. are Now The boys of Armada band will be sharing the stage with another Indonesian pop band, Seventeen, on the 18th of February at Boshe VVIP Club. Prepare yourself for a friendly battle of the bands filled with mellow pop rock beats. The music may be soppy but you get bet that there’ll be plenty of ladies around.

Vandalism Klapa| fri 11 Feb | 9PM Sound Like Electro house Hail From Australia

Have Been Vandalism are an Australian electro house music husband and wife team consisting of Dj/Producer Andy Van (previous member of Madison Avenue) and vocalist/songwriter Cassie Van. Vandalism have been prolific remixers in the last few years, reworking songs for various artists and becoming one of Australia’s leading electro/dance outfits. Originally formed in 2004 when Andy Van & Kam Denny hooked up to bootleg & mashup electro house tunes, the pair moved on to remixing other people’s tracks. Cassie joined the group as the lead vocalist and lyricist in 2005, and their efforts eventually gave birth to the cover single ‘Never Say Never’ (originally sung by Romeo Void) in 2006. Thanks to a considerable amount of airplay the track became an instant hit down-under. In April of 2009, Kam Denny departed the group and is no longer involved in Vandalism productions or live performances. are Now In a recent interview, Cassie Van answered a question about why their performance is such a head turner like this, “I think it’s the energy, I can’t stand still onstage. As soon as I hear music, my shoulder or my foot starts moving. Then when I’m on stage it just becomes a whole other level. I feel like there’s a wild animal inside me. It’s released once I walk onto the stage.” So if you’re ready for that, they’re ready for you next week at Klapa Klab. Be sure not to miss their performance on the 11th of February.

So, Mr. Duncan Sheik, tell us a little of what you’ve been up to lately and what can we expect from you in the year 2011?

be a bit like a modern version of ‘Sweeney Todd’ - only with designer suits and electronic music inspired by the 80's.

I have a new record coming out this spring called ‘Covers 80's’ which is made up of acoustic covers of mostly electronic bands and artists from the UK who influenced me as a teenager. So Depeche Mode, The Cure, New Order, Talk Talk etc ....

If you were given the opportunity to choose between composing music for the stage or writing songs for a new album, which would you instantly jump at?

Call me old school, but your first hit ‘Barely Breathing’ is still on my iPod’s most played list. Are there any interesting tales behind the song? Only that it was the last song I wrote as an afterthought for my first record and I didn't play it live for a long time because I was over it! But I play it these days ; ) You’ve been involved in many musicals and even won several Tony awards for them; how did you get into that and why? I met a playwright named Steven Sater in NYC because we are both practicing Buddhists. We decided to collaborate on some theatre projects. I thought it would be interesting to try to re-imagine the style of the music one hears in a theatre context, and seven years later ‘Spring Awakening’ became a big hit on Broadway. I never thought that would ever happen! You were nominated for a Grammy back in ’98 for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and eventually ten years later grabbed the award, but this time for Best Musical Show Album. Say you did win the Grammy in ’98. Would you still have considered composing musicals?

I am very happy to do both - and I think having different mediums in which to work keeps the creative process a lot more fun and a lot more fresh. Will this be your first time to Indonesia (Bali & Jakarta)? I was here in the summer of '07 in Nusa Dua, Bali for vacation. It was brilliant and I was very happy to be asked back! What can we expect from your performance in Bali & Jakarta? It will be an acoustic Valentines day kind of show with my friend Rachel Yamagata. She is a brilliant artist in her own right and everyone should check her out if you haven't already. Anyway hopefully the show will be very romantic so ... bring a date! Shout out to your fans in Bali & Jakarta! Hello to all you brilliant Balinese and Jakartans in body or spirit. I hope to see you on Feb 12th in Kuta, and Feb 14th in Jakarta. I have been waiting to play here for ten years so see you soon!

Good Question. Possibly not ... so I guess things happen at the time they are supposed to. Especially if you keep trying to do good work for the right reasons. Which I don't always manage to do but, you know, I try ... A musical based on the psychological thriller ‘American Psycho’; can you give us a little insight on the project? In my opinion ‘American Psycho’ was a pretty sadistic movie, how is all that blood and guts going to be portrayed on stage with music in it to boot? Well, all that blood and guts is the fun of it, right?! All jokes aside, it took me a minute to decide to do this project, but when I re-read the book I thought it could

Duncan Sheik will perform at Hard Rock Café Bali on the 12th of February and Hard Rock Café Jakarta on the 14th of February.

Have You Ever Experienced

i

t was one of those ‘you had to be there’ type Monday nights at Ryoshi’s Restaurant on Jl. Legian. The Rio Quartet is playing, slowly taking off to another planet towards the end of the second set, filled with the jams of guest artists from around the globe. These jams, for want of a better word, are hot. Burning hot! Simply it doesn’t get any better. Rio introduces the players and one by one they go into solos, then comes Eric Soundhy and something unreal happens. I can claim to be something of a musicologist, but for the life of me, I can’t follow this man. He just doesn’t stop - off into another stratosphere to a point of losing control. Not in the musical sense, but into a world of his own where he’s playing with his feet, backside, jumping on the keyboard, pounding away and never missing a note - once even to the point where he actually broke the damn piano. He stands there lost in space and the audience is beside themselves, clamoring and screaming, cheering for more, more. Rio emphasizes, this is the best piano player in Bali, but that’s an understatement. Later on Eric sits in front of me and says, “Man, I get really scared, I just don’t know, the music takes me”. I smile and think “you have no idea where you took me”.

S.B. Get it on, bang a gong. E.S. from

My age is thirty six; mother is Bali and my father from Sulawesi.

S.B. At what age did you start playing music?

E.S. My first interest was keyboards. That was at fourteen, then guitar and then piano.

S.B. Do you compose and write your own songs?

E.S. Yes, I already have an album out from two thousand and seven and I’m in the process now for another coming out soon, just waiting for the cover to be finished. This is on an independent label and it’s more of Balinese type music.

S.B. Have you played outside of Indonesia?

E.S. Yeah, Singapore and Malaysia, my dream is to play in the west, maybe this year.

S.B. Who are you’re most influential musicians?

E.S. From classical it’s Bach and from Jazz, Keith Jarrett, Herby Hancock, and then Chick Corea.

S.B. I presume you do a lot of studio sessions?

E.S. Yeah I’ve worked with the most famous artists here, Baliwan and Superman is Dead, Saharaja.

S.B. How do you feel about the music industry here?

E.S. For pop its okay, difficult, quiet for Jazz, anything progressive, in Bali it’s different, there’s a lot of international influences.

S.B. What about in the business sense?

E.S. Difficult, in the ozone, getting royalties and such, like you would say; mafia controlled?

S.B. Are there international copy write laws here? E.S. Yes, in Jakarta.

S.B. Last words to the fans out there?

E.S. I believe music is the voice of the world,

S.B. What’s the difference between keyboard and bringing peace, keep learning, keep exploring, making you alive. piano? E.S. Keyboard is small, it’s not the same, I also started playing trumpet ten years ago.

S.B. When did you start playing professionally?

E.S. When I was eighteen years old, yeah, here in Bali on Jl.Legian, I got seven thousand rupiah. (Laughter).

S.B. Ha, Big time. What do you prefer to play musically? E.S. Jazz

S.B. Until we reach a higher ground. Have you ever experienced? Well I have. Thanks Maestro. Chow mein, Salvador Bali.

I’d like to add that I had very little cash on me as I never really intended to stay the night. Finding accommodation in Lovina is actually pretty easy as there are many hotels and resorts stretched along the beach front, but to find one to fit my budget was easier said than done. Hopping on my bike and asking around for an affordable room would have been the best thing to do, but seeing night was already upon me, I didn’t want to risk getting lost. I remembered I was approached earlier by a guy offering me a dolphin

spotting tour and lucky for me he was squatting and smoking a few steps away from my bike. I approached the guy and told him my predicament, and to my surprise he was willing to help me find a place to spend the night but with a catch, I either take a snorkeling tour or dolphin spotting tour with him the next day. I figured it was a small price to pay and said yes to go snorkeling. So after a few phone calls and a short ride later I was lead to a resort that was situated right on the beachfront. Now this wasn’t a cheesy little place he took me to either, it was a nicely set up resort. I was skeptical that I could afford a night at this place, but my new friend assured me it was in my budget and reassured me I’d also have enough for the tour he had planned for me the next day. He was right though, I only ended up spending a little over Rp500K for a room with a sea view and it even included a buffet breakfast. I parted with my new mate and promised to see him the next morning. Curious of the night scene Lovina had to offer, after freshening up I set out to see what the night had in store. Lovina is far from the clubbing scene of Kuta, the only forms of entertainment I came across were seedy little karaoke joints for happy-go-lucky guys out for a quick thrill. I ended up back tracking a little and found myself in Singaraja. Apparently there’s a fairly large Chinese community here, and passing through the streets, it reminded me of the old city in Jakarta. There’s even the biggest Chinese temple in Bali here. A delicacy of the region, a must try, is Siobak, which is a Chinese inspired dish of pig pieces covered in a sweet savory sauce. Seeing that the night life was fairly slow here as well, I ended up ending the night early and went back to the resort. I didn’t find it hard to fall asleep that night, apart from

fatigue, the sound of the crashing waves outside my window made a great lullaby. The next morning I was awakened by my new friend knocking at the door, but baring bad news. He told me that because of bad weather earlier that morning, no boats would take us snorkeling and the only option was dolphin spotting. I decided to try my luck at spotting some dolphins so took the small boat trip to the middle of the ocean and waited for these elusive creatures to be seen. It seems the bad weather also affected the dolphins too as they were a no show. The closest I got to any sea creature was a sea turtle coming up for a breath, but ducked back in before I could aim my camera. It seemed like the bad weather was to continue and burden me for my trip back to Kuta too. Apparently the bad weather had made its way to Bedugul too and left the road slippery as well as leaving a thick fog covering the mountain region. My speeding and leaning techniques of the day before had to take a back seat as the already treacherous roads were slick as grease. The heavy fog only made things worse, making it hard to see beyond two meters and the cold head winds didn’t make things any better either. I never knew how wonderful daylight would be when I finally passed through the mountains. All in all, this first of many unplanned solo riding trips was pretty eventful and it gave me a good taste of the many adventures that Bali has on offer. It only goes to show, traveling the road less traveled will definitely land you on a road to adventure. [Rinaldi]

Riding with Rusty Shackleford

The Great Divide This week Rusty takes a quick, lighthearted look at the differences between the nightlife of Kuta and Seminyak.

Fine dining and fast food, liberals and conservatives, rebels and loyalists, east and west; these are just a few things that categorically contradict one another but cohabitate their respective realms. If you’ve sampled a fair amount of the Bali nightlife, you’ll notice another great schism that divides pretty much the entire Bali party scene; Kuta and Seminyak. To be completely fair, there are nightclubs and venues outside the ‘Kutayak area’, but these are mere peripheries orbiting the two juggernaut party scenes on the island. You can say they’re much like third world countries during the cold war, aligned with the concepts and philosophies of either Seminyak or Kuta. So with a fair bit of stereotyping and just a tiny pinch of exaggeration, I present to you a house divided in concept, class, age, music, socio-economical stratification and just about everything else to do with having a good time.

beatmag.com 068

Seminyak

Kuta To some, it’s a carefree good time where tourists, travelers and locals can mingle and have an absolutely unpretentious night of cliché dance moves, rock solid hits and pure revelry. To others, it’s a mess. Bintang singlet wearing hooligans go out, get drunk, and fight in between trying to hook up with even drunker blonde girls or the ladies of the night that patrol the area. What makes Kuta great is both statements are pretty much true. A night out in Kuta often arrives at one of the above conclusions, and, depending on the night, a person might come up with an entirely different idea of whether or not Kuta was good. So what is it that might change the same person’s judgment of what is pretty much constant in terms of crowd, music, and atmosphere? The answer is really quite simple, if you answered “a total lack of sobriety alters one’s perceptions”, I’d have to agree with you. Kuta is a place to get absolutely smashed, pure and simple. If you haven’t achieved the blood alcohol content of a sailor who’s recently been released from jail, you’re essentially a bystander in the most awesome train wreck of intoxication this island has to offer. If you’d rather not be part of a hot, illusion shaker inspired orgy of sweat and grime, then you’d best skip the clubs of Kuta and take your classy/snobby self to…

Kuta’s Northern neighbour couldn’t be more different in terms of how people under the influence choose to socialize. A great many people may say that Seminyak is a for the more savvy and sophisticated, a place you can enjoy your fellow revelers in a civilized environment where tasteful music, complex cocktails and cutting edge design intersect in luxurious bliss. Detractors believe it’s a pretentious hub of self-aggrandizing snobbery that revels in overpriced drinks that only serve to further one’s perception of status in between tapping away on the ever-present Blackberry. Or they’re simply bogan tourists who have just wandered in by mistake. Seminyak, being quite a bit more sophisticated, has a rather more complex solution to optimizing your good time. Getting completely sloshed is not viewed in quite the same way as it is in Kuta but is still part of the puzzle. Although unscientifically tested, my hypothesis for having a really amazing time in Seminyak is quite simply to have lots and lots of money (or hang out with someone who does). Spend a ton of it on drinks for your posse, then let the real party begin back at a very high priced villa somewhere in Canggu. So there you have it. After reading this, you are now ready to leave the relative safety of sunlit hours and venture into the dark world of the Bali club scene and hopefully be somewhat successful. Whatever your motivations are, I hope you prevail whilst faithfully adhering to this paradigm I have set forth. Next issue, I shall present my theories on finding a suitable mate.

Endah N Rhesa Look What We’ve Found This glorious duo from Jakarta have done their fair share of knocking on the door of many hearts, minds, and even commercial music stardom. The music that Endah and Rhesa play is an optimistic mix of clear, acoustic, folky guitar and outlining bass on a deceptively dense album. Richness is presented in their simple and easy music; be it folk, jazz, blues, ballads, or this time on their second album a bit of ska (Midnight Sun) and ethnic (Mirror Spell). This is the kind of album that makes you pause, put your feet up and escape the bustle of modern life. For a little while at least... Fresh.

Frau Starlit Carousel The simple combination of Frau and her piano creates an almost measureless sound that can barely be contained by car stereos or headphones. Whilst serving time in such bands as Essen Und Blood and Southern Beach Terror, Frau managed to find enough time to write the haunting tunes that make up Starlit Carousel. A girl with Jogja-Japan-Hawaii bloodline who can compile songs like “I’m a Sir”, “Mesin Penenun Hujan” (Rain Machine), and the enchanting hidden track “Intensity, Intimately” with such deftness deserves a much closer look.

RUMOURS

One of the original eateries that gave Jl. Laksmana its more gastronomically inclined alias, the new Rumours gets the once over from long time aficionado Dan Ascroft.

S

eminyak institution Rumours has been keeping many a diner happy over the years with a stirling reputation for great steaks, tasty pasta, and sensible prices. I remember many years ago stumbling across the place with a couple of friends on an early trip to Bali. The first thing that hit me was just how busy it was… Every table full, waiters efficiently buzzing around, three deep at the central bar and even a queue out the door. Over the years I have watched plenty of restaurants come and go, but the Rumours buzz has never subsided, and with its recent facelift the restaurant has continued to go from strength to strength.

beatmag.com 088

Predictably the place is heaving as I arrive just after 8 on a drizzly Friday evening – the miserable weather proving no obstacle for the scores of diners engrossed in conversation. It’s actually the first time I have visited since the renovation 6 months previously, and I’m happy to see that none of the atmosphere has been lost as a result. Everything has been smartened up a touch, but it doesn’t feel overdone, and the vibe is still a relaxed and casual one. I’m also pleased to see that the menu hasn’t undergone any major overhauls, with the old favourites having been simply tweaked just a touch to bring them up to date, and a smattering of new additions to compliment the tried and tested fare.

From the ‘sweet dreams are made of this’ promo menu, I kick things off with the mahi mahi salad with tartar sauce on a bed of steamed long green beans (26k++). It’s light, tangy and wonderfully refreshing with a generous drizzle of lemon over the top. Although we’re already at the end of January, the Rumours Christmas Special menu has proven so popular over the festive period that it is still being featured. Still feeling suitably festive as a result of a recent trip to the UK, I decide to check out the pork knuckle with roast potatoes and gravy sauce (135k++). The huge joint is easily enough to share, although the tender succulent meat that just falls off the bone is reason enough to be glad that I’m dining

alone. Finishing up (and with little space left after the pork) I manage to squeeze in a lime crème brulee (29k++). Beneath the burnished sugar top lies a delicious light, zesty, creamy interior – difficult not to scoff down in one go. It seems that the Rumours buzz is still very much alive and kicking, and I for one am glad that after all this time, this Seminyak stalwart remains very much at the forefront of Bali’s dining scene. Long may it last! Dan Ashcroft. Rumours, Jl. Laksmana. Tel 738 720. 089 beatmag.com

Truly Indonesia

Indonesian tastes for a traveler’s appetite…

Gudeg Yogyakarta Apart from Bali, Yogyakarta is considered as one of Indonesia’s cultural epicenters, with its thriving traditional Javanese ways. Amongst the many temples and ancient palaces, you will find many hawker stalls, warungs or little old ladies squatting on the sidewalk selling a dish called gudeg. This strange looking yet very flavorsome dish is made from young Jack Fruit boiled in a mixture of coconut oil, palm sugar and other ingredients to form a blackish brownish stew. Gudeg comes in two forms, a dry gudeg which is darker in color due to the use of less coconut milk, and a wet gudeg, which as the name suggests is more soup like. Always served with rice and a spicy sambal, gudeg is a sweet and savory treat loved by many. beatmag.com 090

You might not get that raise or promotion you were hoping for but the right person will, and you should feel confident that your turn is sure to come. People need you to tell them what to do, though you may want to help them figure out how to wean themselves off their dependence on authority figures. They will thank you for it later! This doesn’t have to be romantic, it could also be professional, and by teaming up with another person the sum total of your skills (and how you complement one another) could prove exceptionally lucky. It’s one of those rare times when you can take care of that mountain of chores all by yourself, so send everyone else off to do their thing while you do yours.

It’s a great time to move through work projects with great speed, clean the house or get in touch with that new person. You can have it all! Use this new insight to make plans for the near future. You’ll feel good getting out and doing something new. Fortunately, there are going to be opportunities to pursue more exciting possibilities too, once the routine stuff is out the way. Being steadfast at work and performing well will result in good recognition and rewards. The ingredients for success are hard-work, patience, determination and a contingency plan. If you ever get to work with design elements in your job, do some mockup drawings on your computer or play with computer graphics.

Heavy emotional business comes out, and you need to make sure that you’re not just doing the same-old thing when it comes to taking care of baggage. In the professional sphere, a big change in a particular project or in the structure surrounding you gives rise to a certain anxiety. There’s nothing wrong with that conversation now and then, but if you feel you can’t get anything important done, talk to the right people. It’s one of those times that demands a break from your routine, even if you’ve got tasks that must be completed. This could be linked to work pressures or because you are finding looking for employment a stressful process. Though life isn’t exactly comfortable right now, you can still get a lot done.

Are you strongly attracted romantically to someone whom you know through your job? This might bother you a little, as you might be concerned about the protocol, but still, you won’t want to pass up what might be a beautiful relationship just because of a glitch. At work, you’ll be feeling quite serene. Your projects are progressing slowly but surely, everything seems to fall into place quite easily and relations with clients are flowing naturally. You’ll feel more confident if you know that you look your best. This is a good time to introduce yourself to prospective clients, colleagues, and romantic prospects alike. Now, you are back in familiar territory as issues concerning your relationships come to the fore.

Gemini May 21 - June 21 You’re not feeling totally comfortable with big activities, but that doesn’t mean you get to walk away from them. If you’re not sure that this is the right path for you, then you need to decline and see what comes along next. Occasional setbacks may occur, but you will be able to tackle the problems as and when they appear. It is not a good time to take action or to put plans into place - delays and obstacles may crop up - so it would be better to take a break or rest. Your professional and business interests will take second place to more pressing personal and emotional matters. Any work should be accomplished quickly, and you’ll be in the mood to continue the silly banter well into the wee hours.

Virgo Aug 23 - Sept 22 Changes in the work front could make situations seem a bit overwhelming, but hang in there as the end results will be good. Being responsible and diplomatic where work matters are concerned will gain you respect and recognition. Opportunities will arise if you share your creative ideas with people who can bring new projects to your life. A project that excites you will preoccupy you and will probably upset a loved one who will want your undivided attention. The penny suddenly drops and you will realise that it is possible to manifest your own luck by fearlessly going after what you want. You will have the motivation and means you need to get started on your work projects and ideas.

Duty and responsibility come first at this time, but you should work out ways to create more leisure time in the future. You have every reason to believe an aspect of life is taking a turn for the better. While it has been a long time coming, there may be rich rewards, a new relationship or greater prestige. Someone may acknowledge your efforts, but it will be false praise compared to the tributes you truly deserve. As you make the transition between one situation and the next, happiness may be tinged with a touch of nostalgia. A creative project needs to be balanced with expertise; by boning up on your skills, what you produce is both beautiful and practical. There is a softness about you, but you’ll still have enough grit to get things done.

Mixed influences are both emotional and laid-back, and success lies in knowing when to speak out and when to listen carefully. You may offer unsolicited advice, lead by example or inspire others to try something new. You may begin a project without being able to predict the outcome but the challenge is your prime motivator. You will be thinking a lot about how to get things done in the most efficient way possible. Provided you do your homework, discuss plans with loved ones and look at the long-term implications, you will succeed. To reach the pinnacle of success, you must be prepared to roll with the punches and vary your plans or routine. Careful planning is about to reap rewards and support from someone with influence will be the icing on the cake.

Jan 21 - Feb 18

It’s an extremely slow time for everyone but you, so see if you can get folks to plod along behind you while you race ahead and get all the important work done. They can thank you later! At work, you need to keep a check on your impulsiveness throughout. You’re normally so willing to compromise, but now, you may find yourself becoming incredibly stubborn. Work and business are problematic right now, but you can make some progress if you go it alone (as much as possible). You are capable of much hard work, concentrating a great deal of energy and drive towards achieving goals and ambitions. Your urge to get up and go is quite strong now, and that could mean that you’re at odds with your boss, mate or someone

else close to you. Your great energy means that you can have a real effect on others, and you are sure to be more influential than you usually are. It’s one of those times when you can easily outlast the competition, so don’t worry about resting. This may see you following a course of action that you know someone isn’t going to like, but don’t be too put off. It indicates your trust in the future, even if you are asked to get into something that’s outside of your usual sphere of competency. Your great personal energy helps you make great progress on your own projects, and you can turn to others. It may be a token effort, but even that can have a profound effect. Your peers are sure to

You will certainly capture the attention of your audience - just remember that there will be a fine line between fact and fiction. It may be smarter to examine all the pros and cons of your ambitious plans, as very little is likely to go as schedule. You’ll face a sudden rush of things to do, but if you take it one step at a time, you’ll ease stress and deal things effectively. If you are at loggerheads with others, there is still a long way to go before differences are reconciled. Expect battles to be hard-fought and won, or try to avoid competitive people and situations altogether. Your ability to achieve against the odds, bounce back from adversity and persevere will be your greatest strengths. You are being urged to take more responsibility.

Pisces Feb 19 – March 20 appreciate your work. You will have to resolve specific work situations and will have to focus on what you want rather than seeking what you don’t want out of the situations. Make sure you are on top of details at work and as long as you have the answers, you will receive recognition and respect for work well done. This is the time you will find your natural balance and if you have been in the wrong element at work, things and situations will begin to shift in your favour. It will bring added confidence and a sense of hope for the future. This is the time to plan and pursue your goals. Know that you’re capable of creating what you want and make some changes in your life. Now is a good time to wrap your head around how it could all work in the long run.

Between Spaces

By I Made Suparta Wijaya & Oktara Quevarra Bakara

I

n this dual exhibition we have the opportunity to compare the work of two artists originating from two different parts of Indonesia. I Made Suparta Wijaya from Bali sums up his artistic philosophy with the Balinese saying “everything we do has consequences, be it bitter or sweet; good or bad”. Needless to say his iconography is enigmatic and symbolic. Oktara Quevarra Bakara from Sumatra speaks of an

awakening consciousness and the impacts of everyday life upon his works of art. The artists share similar colour schemes and a penchant for scribbling words, formulas and equations like automatic writing onto their canvasses. Amazingly their works are as brilliant and distinct together as they are apart proving that these artists are indeed kindred spirits.

Hitcman is a superhero who visualizes his vision and mission through art, compounded by each Hitam Putih Group member’s character. He is an athletic individual with wings and in his arms he holds the globe. Hitcman will be painted on a single 8 metre canvas that will be worked together on by the ten members of Hitam Putih Group.

THE WORLD IS MY STAGE

Muda Wijaya Born : Karangasem, 8th January 1974. Contact : maydavista@gmail.com

Concept

Muda Wijaya picked up his artistic concepts during his extensive travels around the world, attempting to assimilate with many of the people he met along the way. Inspired by seeing the creative process of his seniors such as Agung Eksa Wijaya, Cok Sawitri and Abu Bakar at work, Muda was able to combine their teachings to create his own style. Nature has also been a never ending source of inspiration for Muda’s theatrical performances. He always manages to insert social satire within his performances as well.
