ThereThens checked, HereNows checked, What’s On checked, features all checked, advertisements are all in and checked, everything OK and checked so I guess it can all go to print! Bah!…I didn’t know taking over The Beat Magazine would be so much work! With one poorly head honcho out of the office, the responsibility of the whole magazine has fallen on my shoulders to complete. It wasn’t an all too difficult task really, but the responsibilities of getting everything close to perfection the way The Beat usually does each fortnight was where the stress lay. However, it was good to see everything pulled through in the end. Our prayers go out to Mr. Wilford for a speedy recovery and we hope to see him back at the office to yell at us all sooner rather than later. Well on to what the Bali entertainment scene has in store for us for these next two weeks, and boy are there a lot of great shows heading this way, what with the countdown to Iron Maiden growing ever closer and clubs bringing in local and international talents, from local beauties DJ Dyy Lovie and DJ Yuko as well as Aussie DJ Helena making her way to Deja’vu, to Bruno from Ibiza bringing a European vibe to the usually subtle setting of Jimbaran’s Rock Bar. Wherever you intend to head out to this week be sure to check what the party has in store for you in the upcoming pages. Cheers and see you at the bar! Comments from our VIP Card Members Firstly, as far as I’m concerned, there is no reason to dislike what so ever about The Beat Magazine. There are only pros! Just one thing I find missing from The Beat Magazine is information of places and events in Denpasar. A little more insight about the capital of Bali would be a plus. Humphrey Ed. Thanks for the kind words Humphrey. We realize that The Beat mainly focuses on the main hot spots of the Kuta and Seminyak area as this is where many tourists and newcomers to the island mainly go, and this is The Beats main target reader. We are slowly making our way to Denpasar, with TBD (The Beat Daily) informing subscribers about the latest local news happening on island. We hope our scope will one day cover the whole of the island.

Interview by Dedi Kristian beatmag.com 060

Being part of both the Music and restaurant business hasn’t made Zio lose focus. be it The Hydrant, Dialog Dini Hari or Art Café, the man has definitely got soul. the beat sat him down for a few words…

Brozio Orah (Zio)

From Hydra to The Hydrant to Zio to Dialog Dini Hari: Any words that represen Zio’s music evolution?

Dini Hari management for the accurate schedules, and taking the weight off my shoulders a bit… Love them a lot!

It would be Rock and Roll… Either modern Rock, old school Rockabilly, Alternative or Acoustic Folk Blues… Still it’s about Rock and Roll.

Art Café showcases national and local musicians and artists, while foreigners play as guests. Any vision within the movement?

What is music to Zio?

Wow, movement? I can say someone’s watching what we’re doing.. Haha… Since day one I’ve always wanted to give more exposure to local artists to perform in Art Café, amateur or pro… Hopefully this year we will bring it on back again with plans I already have on my desk.

Like water, air and earth… This is the earth I walk on, so what I do is just enjoy the breeze of life while I’m in it.… After the new album, any fresh agendas for Dialog Dini Hari (DDH) in 2011?

The biggest challenge in the restaurant business in Bali?

Second album promo in middle 2011. Third album is in the kitchen already now.

Low season... Almost everyone feels this way right? Hahaha.

You run Art Cafe while actively pursuing your rock n roll: How do you keep a balance between music and business?

Most amazing experience while running Art Café?

It’s a busy year now for Art Cafe, with renovation and kitchen enlargement. I want to serve my guests the best. The new look Villa Kresna on Jalan Sarinande will be in operation this March. And there will be a coffee shop just a minute’s walk away from the beach under the same management. So I thank Team Asmara Group who manage Villa Kresna and Art Café as well as Dialog

One day I sat down with the owner, and these two tourists peddled past on their bicycles in front of Art Café. One of them said in a loud voice to the new visiting friend “It’s a beautiful place and the food is delicious too”. And I just smiled. DreaM job bali

Silvie N, Massive Vibrations

DreaM job bali So tell us a little about yourself. Who you are, where you’re originally from and what you do?

I’m a Gypsy at heart, soul & blood, originally from Austria. I have traveled all over this planet, lived in New York (my 2nd Home), France, Italy, England… gosh forget where else. Oh and Bali for 10 years. My artists and friends call me ‘Mamacheetah’, an honour for me to be called ‘mama or ibu’. I’ve worked backstage, my favourite place to BE for over 3 decades, touring and supporting some of the most fabulous artists of all time. "Without music, life would be a mistake!"

Do you see your job as a dream job?

“A Dream Within A Dream” (Poe) indeed! Music and art is my passion, 25 Hours per day in my life! Choosing to do what we love most is a dream for everybody isn’t it? Sometimes it also can turn into a pure nightmare, but if music be the food of love, play on.

Do your parents (family) approve of your job or do they wish you did something else? If no, what would they rather you be working as? Hahaha… I’m not sure if they do, forgot to ask them to be honest. But they always let me live my gypsy way of life since I left my hometown of Vienna when I was 17. I think my whole family tries hard to understand my urge to achieve my dreams but I’m a bit difficult in their eyes :)

Why did you choose your current career path?

I guess you can say it found to me. I’m a natural born manager in a way, and feel like an artist myself sometimes, enjoying every second of this so called “art of life”.

beatmag.com 062

Give us a short history lesson of how you got to be in this job.

I forced my way to get my very first job as a catering girl for a James Brown concert in Vienna, who actually scared me with his crazy requests. When I lived in Paris, I was invited to join Kid Kreole & The Coconuts for their France tour, from there I met Miles Davis on a festival and sat on stage because I knew his guitarist. I saw Jimi Hendrix and Zappa when I was 11, Prince and Fela Kuti later on. From there I knew I wanted to work behind the stage forever.

Having worked with many international performers, who would you say had the most unusual requests? Could you tell us what they were? No way am I telling you such private secrets, but you can read my book one day to find out!

Out of all the places in the world, why Bali?

One day my best friend called me and said, “Bali is the place for you and your daughter” and I believed him! So I packed up my 3 suitcases, left my fabulous midtown NYC Loft, the cold west and the hectic rat race behind to live a more peaceful life in a so called tropical Paradise.

If there was anything you would rather be doing what would it be? ‘La Madam’, a philosopher like Nietzsche, or a rebel musical punk like Mozart.

What’s a little secret you keep to yourself that you don’t mind the world knowing about?

I am actually a shy, very private person but you can’t tell from my personality in public. I don’t like socializing too much but love talking with true friends. I also think there are too many DJs in this world...shhhhh

How to Find

Suitable Mate in Bali: A Concise Guide. By Dr. Rusty Shackleford, PHD

W

hile this guide does not advocate the production of offspring, it seeks to inform readers of the several necessary steps in relation to pairing two consenting individuals of appropriate age and physical attraction into something beautiful. The evidence and scenarios presented in this article reflect years of strenuous, sometimes even tedious research of certain rituals exhibited by both male and females (according to classic gender roles) and should serve as a guide for both. Part I: Males. Due to having a Y chromosome, males find it inherently much more challenging when seeking an appropriate partner for courtship. The selection process is guided through numerous factors, first of which involves a direct correlation between the relative attractiveness of a candidate and the amount of intoxicants present in the bloodstream. (See figure 1.1)

Once the conversation and rapport have been established, it is important for males to size up their odds. If one perceives that the odds of an immediate pick up are low and therefore risky, one might consider moving on to the next suitable candidate. But before evacuating, it’s best advised to always exchange some sort of contact details. Should the subject’s assessment become more favourable, he should move onto the next logical step in courtship. Initiating physical contact with your candidate is especially challenging. There are many strategies that can be categorized as either passive (casual) or aggressive (desperate). One might note that the only wrong way is the way that hinders any chance one might have of attracting a partner; therefore careful consideration should be exercised. If successful, only one step remains. “Closing the deal” is sometimes the most complicated part of the courtship ritual, too soon and she may shy away, too late and the opportunity may slip. It could be merely thinly veiled deception that your candidate will understand, or a straight to the point statement that announces your intentions in the bluntest of ways. Like the step before, there is no universal right way and the end result is your only measure of success. Part II Females Be attractive. Accept free drinks. Choose.

There are a great number of courtship strategies available, and selecting the proper technique might mean the difference between a night of solitude and a highly successful evening of happiness. Whatever the approach, it is perhaps most successful to neither come on “too hard” or “too soft”, applying a suitable equilibrium when “hitting on” a susceptible candidate.

beatmag.com 064

Part III Conclusion Well there you have it, a concise guide to the methods and strategies involved in finding a suitable mate. I hope you have found this article useful and I sincerely wish you the best of luck in your endeavors.

a

mongst the ritzy clubs around the Seminyak area, hu’u is considered one of the most ‘to be’ places of them all. Some may say it’s due to the amazing atmosphere offered by the place, some say it’s the food, but

most say the reason they return to hu’u is thanks to the beautiful PR girls. The one responsible for keeping these lovely ladies in check is Janne Deboer, who herself is far from lacking in the beauty department. Having spent 14 months

managing the frontline, Janne is no stranger to frequent visitors of hu’u, always greeting everyone she knows and meets, setting an example for her crew. Although the PR girls are given a freedom to express their fashionable side, Janne makes sure they keep to the hu’u set guidelines. She also makes sure that all the PR girls do their best to assure that all guests are comfortable and that everyone who enters feels welcomed to return once again. B.O.B The Adventures Of Bobby Ray After a couple of EPs and mixtapes, Bobby Ray has finally raised the bar higher, thanks to his powerful vocals that he’s maintained during his long run. Now his ‘no genre’ style has led to more international recognition, with loads of support from today’s big names such Bruno Mars, Hailey Williams (Paramore), Rivers Cuomo (Weezer), Lupe Fiasco, T.I. and Eminem. Definitely no wannabe, this guy writes, sings, raps and produces his own songs. No surprise then that he’s hotly tipped for further international success.

Boogiemen Nu Son To Shine Jakartan soul-urban soldiers Boogiemen are a good example of how Hiphop can be rich, groovy and soulful. It’s an urban feel that combines a grown man’s taste with wilder word play with a deep bass line. The flow is good on ‘Can’t Be Better Than This’, which could be described as like hearing 90’s rap, Maliq & D’essentials pop jazz and Erykah Badu combined. A few other songs on the album fit the bill for a boogie night or two with drinks in hand.

Comical Parodies There’s nothing like seeing your favourite (or not so favourite) movies parodied into a humorous comedy. Here’s some suggestions to help relieve the february blues. •Airplane! This highly successful classic 80’s comedy costars Leslie Nielsen and tells the story of how an airplane crew gets food poisoned and the only person capable of landing the plane is a veteran war pilot afraid to fly. He may have a drinking problem, but don’t call him Shirley! •The Naked Gun Based on the classic TV comedy series Police Squad, which itself was a parody of the classic show Dragnet, tells the story of Incompetent cop Frank Drebin (Leslie Nielsen) who has to foil an assassination attempt on Queen Elizabeth II. It even stars OJ Simpson!

It’s a gleeful spoof of the galaxy from far, far away (Star Wars) as well as other intergalactic Sci-Fi classics such as Star Trek and Aliens. • R o b i n Hood: Men in Tights Following the success of Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, it was never going to be long before someone had to go and make a spoof about the successful flick. Everything you know and love about the classic tale is turned on its head for a side splitting tale of heroic thieves in tight tights! •Scary Movie After a string of successful teen horror and slasher movies in the late 90’s, the genre was overripe for a spoofing. The Wayans brothers began their long love affair of spoofing movies with this masterpiece, as well as their continuation of casting Carmen Electra in nearly every movie they make.

Rip Curl Grom Search Season is On! S

tarting off its 8th year of scouring the islands of Indonesia for the nation’s hottest groms, the Rip Curl GromSearch 2011 season began in West Java at the sand bottomed right hand point break of Batu Karas, located a few hours’ drive west of Bandung in West Java on February 20. Boy and girl groms (young surfers under 16 years of age) from all over Java will be hopped aboard planes, trains, automobiles and motorbikes to make their way to Batu Karas in time for the funfilled day of surfing, games, and giveaways that has become a time-honored surfing tradition at Rip Curl. The winner and the runner up in the Under 16 year old division of each 2011 Rip Curl GromSearch will receive an all expense paid trip to compete in the GromSearch National Finals in October at Kuta Beach in Bali. A great adventure awaits those lucky groms on what just may be their first trip ever to Bali, with a weeklong Grom Training Camp and full-on challenge of surfing against their peers and the chance to become Indonesia’s 2011 Rip Curl GromSearch Champion.

The grand prize for the National Final’s Champion at Kuta Beach is a trip to Australia in 2012 to compete in the Rip Curl GromSearch World Final that is held each year at Bells Beach, truly a great honour and a great reward. Last year’s GromSearch winner Jeren Kiring has his passport ready to go and will be heading Down Under this April to take on the world’s best junior surfers at Bells Beach. The second stop on the Rip Curl GromSearch will land the team on the wave rich shores of Kuta in South Lombok on March 20th, then over to the premiere surf destination of Lakey Peak in Sumbawa on April 10th, and back to Bali and up to the long left-hand point breaks of Medewi on September 11th, before bringing all the winning groms together for the National Final at Kuta Beach on October 8th and 9th. There is no entrance fee for participation in Rip Curl GromSearch events, and all contestants receive a Rip Curl goody bag and Rip Curl T-shirt. They are also given instructions on environmental awareness as well as the chance to participate in interesting non-surfing games during the day.

It’

s always refreshing to find a good value eatery amongst the ever-increasing prices in Seminyak. Warung Bale Bali is so inconspicuously tucked away on jl. Kunti that you’d be forgiven for driving straight past and not even noticing it. However, this is clearly part of its charm, and along with it’s cheap prices and antique décor this little Seminyak oasis should definitely not be overlooked.

the faint strands of Miles Davis waft out of the speakers and I can see that the tagline is not just an empty promise.

Amazingly, Warung Bale Bali has been around since 1998, with a vision that encompasses both food and antiques. The former (to be precise) is a blend of over fifty Chinese and Indonesian cooking techniques from homemade family recipes that have been handed down over the The tagline reads ‘Chinese food with a jazzy generations. After swiftly quaffing an iced lime juice (maximum refreshment), we order up a starter of cakwe udang (40k). The six pieces of deep fried bread containing a mixture of succulent minced prawns and spices coated in a sweet and sour sauce are instantly devoured by one and all. Dining alone this would almost be a full meal in itself. Being something of a rib fan I order up a plate of iga sapi madu bakar (50k) off the beef section of the menu. The sweet and tender meat literally falls off the bone, so things get a touch messy as I attempt to shovel a bit of fresh sambal matah on top. Luckily though two of my fellow diners are facing a similar issue whilst digging into the seafood basket special (135k). Consisting of gurame fish, squid, gindara, prawns and mahi mahi, the seafood special represents excellent value, and is more than enough for two hungry appetites. Truly Indonesia

Indonesian tastes for a traveler’s appetite…

Tinutuan Manado, North Sulawesi Tinutuan is also known as bubur Manado (Manado rice porridge), and is a delicacy from the city of Manado, North Sulawesi. Some say that the dish originally hailed from the city of Minahasa and spread to Manado in the late 70’s, being sold at small hawker stalls around Manado. This simple dish is made from a combination of mashed pumpkin, boiled cassava, spinach, and corn, then cooked with rice porridge. The consistency is more like a thick stew than porridge but is very tasty. The bubur Manado is commonly served with a tomato based sambal, deep fried tuna or flaked tuna and sometimes with deep-fried shallots. Tinutuan is a very healthy dish, made completely from vegetables making it a suitable selection for vegetarians. beatmag.com 088

March 21 - April 20

April 21 - May 20

May 21 - June 21

Your emotional state is somewhat fragile right now, so you need to make sure that you’re ready when the upheaval comes. It’s the perfect time for you to have your family or colleagues convene to think about your shared beliefs and what really brings you all together. You definitely won’t get work finished if you’re preoccupied with the goings on in other people’s lives. Stay focused on what you need to do. You’ll be trying to do too many things all at once - your strong curiosity will lead you off in all sorts of directions, and in the end you achieve nothing, and are frustrated. Have you checked your pile of paperwork lately? It’s a good time to do just that, as that bill you were sure was paid might be hours away from delinquency, and who needs that? Make your own luck.

If you and your sweetheart have been exercising together, it may be the first time you actually feel energy and exhilaration instead of weariness and aching muscles. The astrological influence can give an extra lift to your health - but don’t take it for granted and slack off! Instead, keep up the good work! You may feel that you’re in a hurry, but it’s vital that you slow yourself down as much as possible -- so you can get a better grip on your situation, if for no other reason. A coworker is on your mind or in your face right now, and that could be even more problematic, as everyone’s fuse is extra-short. Things are not really going well for you, and if folks at work or at home slip up and leave some work undone, it’s not the end of the world.

Cancer

Leo

June 22 - July 22

July 23 - August 22

It’s time to buckle down -- and not just for you! It may be time for you to enforce a little team spirit or something subtler, because anyone who strays too far from the norm is bound for trouble. Conflicts are likelier than ever, and you need to do whatever you can to make sure that you’re not escalating them too far. Something small starts to give way, and you almost certainly decide to defend the underdog -- in one way or another. It might be tricky, but you can pull it off if you think big. One of your friends or colleagues needs help in reinvigorating their environment, so show them what to do. Slow down the horses of your chariot; you have reached a bifurcation and need to direct them in one way or the other.

This has probably been something of a saga. You can also have some penetrating insights about your deeper needs. This can help you to see who is valuable in your life. This is also a good time for spiritual work or research activities. You may be forced to be absent during this period for some reason and thus you may have to exercise your authority from a distance. In this benevolent atmosphere you have every chance of connecting with people of influence that could open up splendid opportunities for you. A friend from far away could suddenly decide to visit your town. This person could appear so different that you’re suddenly seeing them in a different light. Once again, your healthier-than-average network pays off for you!

If you have a tight schedule, it could take extra focus and discipline to get everything done. If something can be canceled and saved for another time, do so. Strenuous work should be avoided, as you will be feeling unhurried and carefree. But watch your diet; weight could easily be gained. Seriousness and self-absorption lead to emotional separations from others. Lack of emotional attachments can cause you to feel a bit dejected. Try not to lose yourself in all the madness. Make some time for exercise or quiet meditation. You’ll feel better if you also attend to you! You may want nothing more than to take care of one vitally important problem, but if you don’t stay focused, you are sure to miss your big chance.

Virgo Aug 23 - Sept 22 Curiosity about the past could come over you. Perhaps a specific historical personage or event has stimulated your interest. As a result, you might want to explore books, the Internet, or other sources of information. You could find yourself tapping into your inner poet. You have always had a magical way with words, and right now your desire to express yourself will be heightened. You could spend the time composing clever e-mails that make the recipient giggle with glee. Or you might woo someone with a romantic poem or a naughty limerick. You’ll enjoy playing with language and shaping words in creative ways. Go for it. Not only will you find the subject interesting and your classmates congenial, the discussions that inevitably result can bring you closer together.

Existing connections with people in influential posts can be important, and if you’re an avid networker, this can be the perfect way to open up possibilities. Yet this requires you to overcome any self doubts, or at least come to terms with your weakness. The current celestial energy indicates that this could be the type of relationship that causes you to grow together - spiritually as well as emotionally. The current aspect at play implies a strong mutual interest in the workings of the universe. You’ll probably discuss what you learn for hours. Have fun! If you are someone who is prepared to travel, especially in order to hunt down new working opportunities, a relocation to a new area and a new job are

Now is the time to reinforce people’s beliefs about you -- bust out with a hot idea or original insight that nobody else could see coming. Intellect and emotions should be well balanced and therefore an inner sense of peace should be restored as you come to terms with hidden inner needs and feelings. You’ll be appreciated because of your enthusiasm and your joy of life, loved for the way you are prepared to listen as well as for your determined efforts to make things move in the right direction. You’ll be drawn by these people’s charismatic energy. It’s a good time to learn from mentors like these who can inspire you to become more assertive.

Capricorn

Aquarius

Dec 22 - Jan 20

Jan 21 - Feb 18

This is a good time to immerse yourself in the company of other people. Although sometimes you prefer to be on your own, you’ll enjoy more social energies now. At a social event, you might circulate amongst friends and acquaintances and get to know them better. It reinforce your capacity to grasp things, and this gives you added authority within your circle of friends. You cherish your social life, your interactions with associates will reach a new level of friendliness. The astral configuration strongly indicates that this could open the door to a positive turn in life. Enjoy! A social event or group activity could find you and your current love interest surrounded by people involved in the sciences.

It’s more likely to be positive than negative, but that doesn’t make it any easier. It’s best to do it quickly, but your good judgment is vital. Others will have to go along with these changes or they will be left behind in a cloud of dust as you, energetically, blaze a powerful trail to better and greater personal ambitions and achievements. Expect some of your well-known intensity to escape, leaving those nearby a little nervous -- which can work to your advantage. A little boredom never killed anyone, and it might give your mind the room it needs to wander freely and come up with new ideas. It is all about recycling -- in all its forms. You can (and should) rid yourself of excess, but you need to make sure that you also reuse anything that can somehow be given new life.

You are making a big effort to attract people by making the first step towards them, and this proves to be a good tactic. All you need to then do is decide if you want to take things further. Your savvy instincts are finely honed right now, and you should be able to get your friends to watch your back while you deal with whatever threat has appeared to challenge your supremacy. Your skills could be called on. You’ve always known how to make friends and influence people. When you have to, you have no difficulties impressing people in authority. Your ability to attract attention, investments, suitors or whatever else you desire is heightened right now -- so make sure that all of the right people know that you are available!

Pisces Feb 19 – March 20 This may be a complete departure from what you are doing now, but even if you do take a step into the unknown, this in itself can turn out to be very much a case of a change being as good as a rest. You may actually be on the road or on vacation, or perhaps you’re transitioning away from a job or relationship that just isn’t working for you anymore. Your great emotional energy affords you the opportunity to give up control over some aspect of your life without fretting or freaking out. It is constantly asking you to look left, right and center with hesitation before every decision, and thus slow you down at every turn. Well, it looks like you cannot go any faster, but keep going anyway!

“Fragments” by Simon Hureau

With his forceful style, assertive pencil strokes and fitting schemes, Simon Hureau has become a well-known comic artist in France. After a few self-publications and several contributions to local fanzines, in 2003 he released his first and very personal graphic novel about Cambodia named ‘Palaces’, which was nominated for the Best Comic Award at the Angouléme festival. From then on, several other comics followed, proving his talent. Many critics consider him as one of the best graphic novelists of his time. In Bali, Simon Hureau will share his passion for design through workshops, meetings and collaborations with local artists. Alliance Française Denpasar will dedicate the month of February to comics, for the delight of all comic fans young and old.

In this dual exhibition artists Made Kaek and Edy Able display their fascination for the world of shadows, resorting to palettes limited largely to black, white and gold. Kaek’s world is populated with strange beasts and leering humanoids with all his paintings featured entitled Roh (spirit) and only differentiated by a designated number. In

comparison, the canvasses of Edy Able are more refined and cerebral. The lines are delicate and a close examination reveals endless detail. The art of both is notable for its graphic appeal, certainly the result of their use of lines of black and white. Colours in each artist’s work function as mere splashes to momentarily grab one’s attention.

WHOSE CANVAS IS THIS ?

I KETUT BUDIANA

Born: Padang Tegal, Ubud, Gianyar. 6th October 1950. Contact: budianabali@gmail.com

Concept

At the ripe old age of 60, I Ketut Budiana continues to create inspiring works of art, and recently nearing the end of the month of January, he again amazed art critics at Bentara Budaya Bali with his mystically inspired works of art. In this new exhibition, oddly shaped figures emerge from dimly-coloured canvases inviting onlookers into a grimly inspired vortex of Ketut Budiana’s imagination. He is considered a fantastic stylistic artist, with many of his works of art expressing the symbolic strength of the cosmos, and exceeding the assumption of what is considered as traditional Balinese art (which in Ketut’s opinion has become too conventional). His roots do come from traditional Balinese visual arts, but he considers himself a modern artist, transforming conventional Balinese icons into an expression of his personality.

exhibition

I Ketut Budiana’s latest exhibition featured at Bentara Budaya Bali, showcasing 60 of his best two-dimensional works of art. The exhibition titled ‘Pameran Tunggal 60th I Ketut Budiana: Fantastic World’ showcased his many years of canvas mastery. This maestro of magnificent modern Balinese art began exhibiting his masterpieces back in 1974, and has presented his works all over the globe including America, Australia, India, Japan and several European countries. He was mentored by Dutch painter R. Bonet from 19751977, and was the curator at Puri LukisanRatna Warta Museum in Ubud from 1986 -1990, as well as at the ARMA museum in 1990.
