We hope you all had an uplifting Nyepi Day. With Nyepi falling right on our distribution day you most probably will be reading this week’s Beat after the event. It’s always a great moment for reflection and re-energizing for the next year when the day of silence passes through town and we wish you all a great and prosperous Balinese New Year. Well, if you read last week’s TB editorial written by our illustrious assistant editor Rinaldi you’d probably have thought I was suffering a terminal disease or something worse. Thankfully I’m still here and the dengue fever that I did have over the last month is leaving my body at last. Dengue fever is very common in Indonesia and most doctors and hospitals appear to have the treatment under control. A couple of things surprised me during my rehabilitation though. I was surprised at how many different remedies were suggested to me by friends and how many friends had had the dreaded virus. Staggering really. Just about everyone I know has had it before. From my recent experience the best thing is loads of liquids and food to fight the beast quickly before it takes hold. At the first sign of it start eating and drinking and you may find it doesn’t go too far at all. Also, thanks to all here in the office for keeping the ship on course. With the New Year comes new energy and you can almost feel it in the air. Bring it on, we are ready for it all. Comments from our VIP Card members... I like the fact that it’s everything that’s going on in one spot all at once (if that makes sense) and dislike...hmmm maybe feature more clubs and events at cheaper venues and feature more restaurant reviews..oh and one thing I spotted in the mag was on the 3 steak houses page you had missed out the last name of the restaurant for the aussie steak :( editing is a big problem for me in Bali I’m a complete perfectionist :) Yes, I can admit it and spelling mistakes really get to me. Lauren Williams Ed. Strange, I just checked the steak page and I can see the name of the restaurant. The Grill Corner at Vira Bali Hotel. Maybe it’s a layout more than a proofing problem. I personally wonder why they were all called steak restaurants at all, but that’s another issue. Thanks for your comments. Get the beat vip card by sending an email to vip@beatmag.com and receive discounts in the best restaurants all over town.

Scoop Digital Lontar Bali is on the move to protect it’s precious ancient literature volumes and cultural symbols in digital form. About 10,000 ancient lontars (manuscripts on leaves) will be digitized to help them stand the test of time while also providing ease of access. Most of these lontars tell the ancient tale of the Ramayana, as well as classic Usadha (healing methods) and philosophies. Bali’s provincial government has appointed Prof. Ron Jenkins - an expert from Wesleyan university - to help in the process. Once digitized, the artworks will help introduce Bali’s ancient culture to the rest of the world, with the manuscripts to be presented online in Balinese, Indonesian and English language formats.
Bali International Spa & Wellness Expo 2011 Working hand-in-hand with prestigious brands, major industry associations and leading trade media, the Bali International Spa & Wellness Expo will be held this year from the 9th to 11th of March at Sanur Paradise Convention Center. The expo has experienced a slight push back and re location from its original schedule of February, but organizers promise a bigger and better event. The expo will play host to an extensive program of seminars and conferences meant to update, inform and educate trade and business professionals and provide the environment for networking and information exchange. www.biswexpo.com
Gambelan officially Balinese After several of Indonesia’s traditional customs being claimed by neighbouring countries as their own, Bali’s regional government is planning to register the gambelan (traditional Balinese instrument) as one of Bali’s unique cultural symbols. Bali’s cultural official Ketut Suastika explains the reason for this action by stating that the international growing interest of gambelan music in recent years coupled with the many gambelan troops around the world has led to a concern that neighbouring countries may adopt the tradition as their own, and so it is best to announce the cultural origins of gambelan as soon as possible. With this act any cultural friction between neighbouring countries can hopefully be prevented.

Mark Ronson Potato Head | Wed 16 Mar | 10PM Sounds Like Hip Hop, Rock and Soul Hails From UK
Has Been DJ, guitarist, music producer and co-founder of Allido Records. Born in Britain 35 years ago, Mark’s musical interest was sparked at an early age by his biological father, who was one-time band manager. When his mother remarried Foreigner guitarist Mick Jones, music only surrounded his life further. Whilst attending NYU, Mark became a regular at downtown hip hop spots in 1993, slowly building his reputation as a DJ. He soon found some respect, and was called upon to play at celebrity private parties. He moved on, however, to producing music after Nikka Costa’s manager heard one of his gigs and Mark produced the song ‘Everybody Got Their Something’ for her. Mark released his first album, ‘Here Comes the Fuzz’ in 2003, which featured several big name RnB stars. He also became one of the regular DJs at Justin Timberlake’s New York club, Suede, when it opened in 2003. Ronson has since produced multiple songs on the albums of singers such as Lamya, Macy Gray, Christina Aguilera, Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen and Robbie Williams. His second album, ‘Version’ saw great success, reaching #2 in the UK charts, producing three top ten hits and won Ronson a BRIT Award for Best Male Artist 2008. Also in 2008 in Paris, he performed a unique live set with Duran Duran for an exclusive, invitation-only performance, showcasing specially re-worked versions of some of Duran Duran’s classic hits that were created by Ronson, along with tracks from the band’s new album, Red Carpet Massacre. He later worked with Duran Duran on their latest album, All You Need Is Now, released late last year. Is Now Mark has just released a new album ‘Record Collection’, and recently announced the name of his new band, ‘The Business Intl’. His first single from the album ‘Bang Bang Bang’ peaked at #6 on the UK Singles Chart. Mark will be performing his DJ set at Potato Head Beach Club for an evening of his grooves and is sure to be a huge night of the latest UK sounds.

mamsa & 98.5 the beat radio plus at hu’u hu’u bar | 18 Mar | 11PM Sounds Like Electronic Hail From Bali, Indonesia
Have Been DJ Mamsa needs little introduction in these parts. Since re-branding Radio Plus back in the early 00’s into a youth, rock and hiphop station, then pulling the pin and leaving to Perth to study sound engineering and coming back to Bali with a whole new outlook on dance music, Bali’s sound waves have never sounded so good. The reincarnated DJ Mamsa singlehandedly made Bali house music a more interesting soundscape, with a mutli-year residency at the Living Room that took that venue to amazing heights and since last year freelancing most of the major Bali venues. There are many reasons why Mamsa won the Best Bali DJ at The Beat Awards for the past two years running and one of them would have to be very simple, he plays the best club music going. are Now It’s hard to get anything out of him. I recall asking him a few times, “What the hell is that music you are playing? How would you define it?” He would nonchalantly turn and say, “Oh that’s electronic, man.” Hmmm, nice. So without being able to define what he plays all I can say is that it’s damn good and he can make a night out of nothing! Or was that the booze? Anyways, come down to find out for yourself at Hu’u on Friday night. DJ SD.

DJ Yukon DeeJay Club | Sat 19 Mar | 2AM Sounds Like Trance, Progressive Hails From Sydney, Australia
Has Been From an early age, Yukon had a passion for Dance Music, with the 2001 Trance and Progressive House movement captivating the young Australian. Influenced by the sounds of DJ greats such as Tiesto, Armin van Buren, Ferry Corsten, Dave Seaman and Sasha, it wasn’t too long before Yukon found himself in and out of record stores purchasing their albums. Soon enough a pair of new turntables occupied his spare room and the journey began... A bedroom DJ for approximately three years, it wasn’t until mid 2003 that Yukon finally came out of his shell and joined the Fixation crew. Proving that he had the skills to handle Trance and Progressive beats with his early demo CDs, the demand for his mixes began to increase. In June 2006 he held his first club night at Fixation, followed by a breakout performance at Transmission Magic City in May 2007. He’s traveled to several clubs around Russia and Germany, slowly gaining a foothold on the international scene. is Now No stranger to the decks of Bali, Yukon will be hitting it up at Deejay Club to entertain the early morning clubbers of the island. Tell us the short version of how you ended up on the Bali nightlife scene? Back in my college days I worked part-time from club to club, and when I graduated I moved to Makassar to work in the Quality Hotel Makassar. After three months, they offered me a job at Botol Musik Cafe which was tied to the hotel, from there I was a waiter before moving to the bar and somehow I managed land the spot of Café Manager. From there I moved on to Smile Plaza & Entertainment (Japanese Resto) doing marketing, then I continued to shuffle around and finally in December 2009 I made it to Red Square Bali which now has transformed into 88 Bali. Your current position at 88 Club Bali is? General Manager. What’s one of the most successful parties you’ve ever managed? There are too many to mention. One would have to be a venue birthday event at Samarinda which had outdoor and indoor parties. The party was bombarded with ten bands, ten DJs, ten model agencies doing fashion shows plus ten dance groups. All I can remember is it was jam-packed. Craziest party you’ve ever attended? Hmmm craziest party….? It would have to be the Sparkling Dizco at 88 Club Bali which was held to celebrate my birthday, hehehe… How would you describe a successful party? A jam-packed crowd, a totally happening event and at the end of the day it meets all the targets. First three things you do when you find your venue empty, when it’s supposed to be a big and happening event? 1. Call my friends and clients. 2. Call all staff, and force them to come. 3. Then finally, pray, hehehe…
Handled any annoying performers or DJs with outrageous superstar demands? Annoying DJs or performers?? Hmmm, of course sometimes those kinds of “superstars” make their way to 88 Club’s stage and all I do is simply fulfill their every desire according to the signed contract. Then I blacklist them for any upcoming events… Simple... hahahaha You’re currently managing a club that not too long ago changed its brand image: How do you keep everybody coming and enjoying their time at 88 after such a transition? It was hard work for me and my team at first when we had to change the name, but I always told everyone from regulars to new people I met that 88 was still the same exciting venue under the same management and they finally took heed of my words. I believe as long as we work hard, pray hard, and disco harder everything falls into place, hehehe… The word around Bali is that you’re one of the most sociable and pleasant club representatives in Bali. Is this one of your strategies or is it just how you actually are? It’s not a strategy, it’s just me being me, Ronaldizco! Hehehe… I serve with my heart and always do my best to create a happening atmosphere. How do you see the current nightlife industry in Bali and Indonesia for 2011? Will business be booming or do you see dark days ahead? For now Bali’s nightlife industry is going well, but sometimes we see unhealthy competition between clubs. That’s why I believe in a special association meant to protect the clubs and other hotspots in Bali to mend the current communication mishaps between competitors and build better relationships. Shout out to Beatmag.. Good luck to The Beat and its readers - may it be a trendsetter in Indonesia and go international..!

Dream Job
James Sullivan, Md and DJ at Cocoon So tell us a little about yourself. Who are you, where are you originally from and what do you do? I’m originally from West London, but I’m not going to tell you from where exactly - all I’ll say is that it’s the place Ali G made famous, so it shouldn't be too hard to figure it out. I’ve lived in Indonesia for the last seven years - most of that time in Jakarta where I’m a partner in Front Media, which organizes major events and manages international artists. I’ve been at Cocoon since it opened last July, working as Music Director, which has been great. We’ve had some fantastic nights here at the club.
music promotion companies. We would spend any money we made on trips to New York, on records and equipment. It just developed from there. How long do you see yourself spinning on the decks? I don’t see a time limit. Carl Cox, Pete Tong, Francois K, Norman Jay - they’re all still around and don’t look like tiring any time soon. All these boys are pushing 50+. I’m sure if Larry Levan was alive he would still be playing. Anyway, I’m nowhere near as old as these guys ;) hehe!
Do you see your job as a dream job? As with any job there have been highs and lows, but I have to say the highs have been off the scale!! I’ve been lucky enough to have worked with some of the best artists around and we’ve put on some amazing events over the years. Looking back, yes you could say it is a dream job. Do your parents & family approve of your job or do they wish you did something else? If no, what would they rather you be working as? My family has always supported me in whatever I have done, even though they might not have always agreed with what I do. I think I have made the right choices over the years though. Why did you choose your current career path? I think it chose me actually. I was living the corporate life in London for 15 years while maintaining a presence on the music scene. You could say I had two jobs in London, and two very different lifestyles!! Give us a short history lesson of how you got to be in this job. The house music scene exploded in the UK in the late eighties, and my friends I were lucky enough to be right in the middle of it all. Soon enough we were organizing parties for 30,000 people or more. Many of my friends became DJs, event organizers and some even started their own record labels and

Out of all the places in the world, why Bali? I first came to Indonesia ten years ago with some friends. I was interested in the music scene here and managed to hook up with some of Indonesia’s top DJs. We saw an opportunity to set up a business bringing international artists and DJs to Indonesia. I eventually decided to move to Jakarta and over the years we have promoted many events - particularly at Double-Six. When Cocoon opened, I was invited to join as Music Director. What’s a little secret you keep to yourself that you don’t mind the world knowing about? Wouldn’t be a secret if I told you. I once hired an ambulance to take me to stadium nightclub in Jakarta, not really a secret but I probably wouldn't share this story with my mother. :) Everyone needs to keep something secret !!!

ThePeculiar Ambiguities of the Hipster Subculture By Rsty Shcklfrd
HH
ipster. Some people have never heard the term. Some live it. After years of going deep undercover in order to investigate this grotesquely contradictory subculture of middle class teenagers and young adults, my results are rather confusing and my objectivity has wondered wayward to a land where cool is uncool, being a nerd is popular and to not match is to match. This, strangely enough, is exactly what being a hipster is all about. Hipsterdom arrived on the scene in the late 90s and has since mutated itself in a variety of ways that are sometime mutually exclusive to one another. Basic criteria for part of this
beatmag.com 058
Feature
alternative culture included the love of organic food, any independent media, thrift clothes, creativity, micro brews, and a slight snicker at anything mainstream. If you ask a hipster whether or not he or she is one, you will most definitely get no for an answer. This is the way they operate, but if you confront a small group of hipsters, you’ll get a flurry of finger pointing and accusations that will eventually reveal the entire group to be hipsters. So here are a few tips for identifying who is in on this sub group. Appearance can greatly vary with these individuals, but in a pack you can identify some very obvious themes. Tight jeans are the most obvious giveaway but do not positively confirm or identify a hipster. Look out for faux vintage clothing or t-shirts that have their necks stretched out. Leggings are also a dead giveaway as are glasses with absolutely no prescription. Another telltale sign is tattoos. Anything tribal will automatically exclude a person from being a hipster. Something vintage from childhood, like videogame or cartoon characters, is almost certain to grace the skin of these youths. Beards, traditionally the facial hair of blue collar men, will definitely flush out a hipster if they work in a creative setting. A retro haircut on a female of this type in combination with any of the above is a surefire positive identification. You will occasionally see them on a fixed gear bicycle, popularly known as a “fixie”. These
beatmag.com 060
fashionable bikes are indeed a contradiction on two wheels. They’re bikes that have their pedals fixed to their wheels and no brakes so that the only way to stop is to peddle slower or not at all. This makes it considerably harder to ride than a conventional bike. Hipsters, perpetual slaves to fashion, adore the fixie as a unique vehicle that rebels against the mainstream. While not all hipsters ride a fixed gear bicycle, all fixed gear bicycles are owned by hipsters. That’s a cold hard fact. This culture is particularly wired and influenced by technological advances yet it adores everything vintage. They blog and socially network a considerable amount of their lives for all the world to see, because deep in the heart of every hipster, with their puzzling clothes and peculiar tattoos is a hidden attention seeker. But the blogs and facebook profiles are not ignored, almost every Lomo image uploaded are studied and carefully scrutinized by people who have grasped this type of cool and turnaround and resell it back to the hipster culture they were inspired by. This vicious cycle of originality and consumerism has led to an increasing amount of common folk to melt into the blurring lines of the once unique and totally independent hipster. So the ultimate contradiction will inevitably take place, something cool for being outside of the mainstream will eventually become the mainstream.

Lady Antebellum Need You Now
Nas & Damian Marley Distant Relatives
Perhaps winning a Grammy for best album will draw more attention to this three-piece country group, but Lady Antebellum are no newcomers, having enjoyed a long career with pop, country and melodious folk-ballads all strings to their collective bow. Noteworthy single ‘Need You Now’ is still as popular as ever with continued airplay on the radio. Somehow their tried and tested unique music formula works for listeners of almost all ages worldwide, and they occupy a similar status to family friendly chartsters Faith Hill and Tim McGraw. DK
Providing the best of both worlds, lyrical hip hop microphonist Nasir Jones and the socially conscious reggae amplifier Damian Marley combine on this duet album to wonderful effect. No doubt due largely to Marley’s laid-back influence, the tunes are easy on the ears and provide some nice insights life, the universe and everything. So the album is not a difficult, hate-fuelled collection songs, but instead intellectually driven biblical chant, with hope as the essence. DK.

Surf Batu Karas Opens
Rip Curl 2011 GromSearch Series The scenic beachside town of Batu Karas in West Java was ablaze with action on Sunday as right on cue the swell kicked up and provided the perfect arena for the Java groms to fire up the first event of the 2011 Rip Curl GromSearch season. A total of 47 groms, some from as far away as Cimaja (a 12 hour drive by car) as well as from nearby towns Pangandaran, Cilicap, and Karang Papak gathered at the beach in Batu Karas for a fun day of surfing with a serious prize at stake for the two top finalists in the under 16 division: The coveted ‘Ticket to Bali’. With visions of trips to Bali and Australia firmly in their minds, the starting horn called the first heat of the under 16 groms into action at 7:30am at the spot locally known as “the reef”, with the rising tide conditions providing glassy and perfectly lined up 2-3 foot waves for the frothing youngsters. They aggressively went on the attack with deep bottom turns, big hits off the lip and aerial boosts whenever possible. On the serious side, Diki, Muldi, Yoga, and Erik showed off their skills to the judging panel led by Head Judge Arya Subyakto and including Rip Curl team riders Pepen Hendrik and Wayan “Gobleg” Suyadnya from Bali, as well as Batu Karas locals Husni Ridwan, Giang, and Lili leading up to their
beatmag.com 064
final showdown. The under 16 finalists were initially challenged by a lull in the waves during their 20 minute final which only increased the tension. But it soon became clear that Deden and Dian were in a tight battle for the win, with 13-year-old Dian aggressively attacking each wave and going for the big maneuvers. Deden was more selective, trying to find the best wave before blasting his patented big turns. In the end, Dian racked up the most points proving to the judges that he was the most committed in his surfing, and was all smiles after being presented with his prizes and ticket to Bali. In addition to the surfing competition, the nonsurfing kids were given a chance to win some prizes too. Rip Curl event manager Dhanny called all the kids together for a trash gathering competition, explaining the importance of having a clean beach and properly disposing of their trash. Earlier in the day everyone on the beach had been given a booklet from GUS, an environmental non-profit company in Bali on how to care for their environment. Next month the Rip Curl GromSearch team will be heading to the island of Lombok for the 2nd event of the series, which will take place on the 20th of March at Kuta Lombok. How can these two possibly different worlds be brought together is quite a unique and long history, a little too long to make into a single article. To put a long story short, AndrÊ Michelin founder of Michelin Tyre Company, created a guide to aid drivers find the best restaurants in France, and with time the local guide grew to a worldwide list of fine dining establishments, with almost every chef doing their best to get a spot on the list. To be granted a 3 star rating by Michelin is probably one of the biggest honors to fall upon any chef. If you happen to be an amateur food lover like myself, it’s definite an honor to be invited or to

participate in a sampling of a world class Michelin Star chef, be he one or even a two star rank and especially a three star. I was lucky enough to be invited to two different Michelin Star dinners in the previous fortnight, thanks to a few friends who know my love for food. Being a sucker for foie gras and black truffles, it was a no-brainer to empty my schedule to make the date. The first fine dining event was tied to a Chaine des Rotisseurs event and featured Chef Marcello Fabbri who gained the coveted star while working at Anna Amalia Restaurant in the eastern part of the Germany. The seven, all truffle course dinner was an exceptional experience, tantalizing my taste buds with every mouthful. The wine pairing was also exquisite and in my opinion everything matched perfectly. One set back from the whole experience
The family staff from chef Hubert’s Restaurant Kingfisher

was the table seating arrangement which paired me with a rather boring couple, but this was easily forgotten by the excellent food presented. My second Michelin star experience was at Ju Ma Na Restaurant at Banyan Tree, which featured twotime Michelin Star chef Hubert Obendorfer from the renowned Kingfisher Restaurant of The Land Hotel, who came with his expert culinary team from Germany. Now, I’ve never had a thing for German cuisine, except if you count Frankfurters in a bun, so I wasn’t expecting my eastern tongue to go well with the five course dinner. If the first course bore any resemblance to the following courses I would have walked out, but Chef Hubert regained my vote with his expertise on the next courses. At the end of the whole dinner I had a new admiration for German cuisine.
If humongous portions and a full belly is your idea of a good meal, then you might want to stay clear of fine dining dinners like these, as gastronomic dining always features small morsels on massive plates, which makes the food look even more micro. That’s probably one reason why they throw so many courses at you, to make up for the minuet portions. One may say that fine dining is more accustomed for those who value rare ingredients, unique flavors or textures and technical culinary prowess compared to bulging ones belly. However, fine dining doesn’t come cheap. So if you happen to be lucky enough to be invited to a fine dining experience featuring a world class Michelin chef (or have a budget to pay for it yourself), don your best attire, and delve in high class culinary decadence once in your life. You’ll never regret it. [Rinaldi]

Unico
Italian Restaurant Let’s face it, everyone loves a good Italian. Sure, you can knock up some instant pasta or slide a frozen store-bought pizza into your oven at home, but there’s simply nothing like sitting at an Italian restaurant; white tablecloth, red wine, the gypsy kings and authentic food – just like mama used to make… Well, if she was Italian anyway.

oining the other existing Italian eateries around Bali comes new kid on the block Unico on Jl. Kunti. For me, the only way international restaurants (especially in Bali) can really work is if they actually have someone from that particular country at the helm. So it’s with great relief that I greet the beaming faces of Antonio and Matteo (owner and chef respectively) upon arrival at Unico. Despite having spent a considerable amount of time here in Bali, both gents are as Italian as they come and make me feel instantly welcome as I pull up a chair. The décor is stylishly modern with block red and black colours dominating both the ground floor and mezzanine level, along with a friendly and efficient staff who are busily buzzing around. A large brick wood-fired pizza oven dominates the downstairs area, with a couple of well-trained pizza dough throwers making it look all too easy. Antonio recommends a bianca al rosmarindo white pizza (30k+) to kick things off along with a nice glass of Italian house white (35k!!). Suitably impressed with the excellent value of the plonk, I hungrily tuck in to the crispy foccacia as Antonio explains that for him, the important things for Unico are quality and value – two admirable attributes for a restaurant in this area. He’s keen to make an impact, and it’s clear that he has a real passion for Italian food so I decide to let Antonio do the ordering. First up off the secondi piatti menu (who says you have to start with a starter?) comes the vitello tonnato (45k+). The delicious, thinly sliced cold cuts of veal bathed in Italian mayonnaise & tuna sauce with capers go down a treat, with the remnants of our foccacia bianco used to mop the
plate clean. Feeling in the sharing mood, we next opt for the sardine in saor (28k+) from the antipasti appetizer menu. A tangy, balsamic onion chutney covers chunks of succulent pickled sardine, which once again doesn’t touch the sides and is swiftly scoffed. Antonio has clearly noticed me eyeing the hive of activity that is the wood fired oven, and before we have time to swig another glass of the excellent house white orders up a quattro staggioni pizza (60k+) for everyone to sample. Tomato, mozzarella, artichokes, ham, mushrooms and black olives is more or less the perfect topping combo in my opinion, and the light and crispy crust and perfectly balanced base suggest that Antonio has made more than a few pizzas in his time. “In my last job, sometimes 150 a day,” he confirms, showing that the perfect pizza recipe takes time, practice and something more than a passing interest in Italian cuisine. After plenty more animated banter regarding the finer points of Italian cooking, we order up a couple of mains to try. The tagliata alla rucola (70k+) and the pappardelle verdi al funghi (35k+) both don’t touch the sides, with the succulent grilled beef tenderloin of the tagliata a particular highlight. With just enough room to share a tortino di cioccolato con gelato from the dolce menu, it’s time to wave goodbye to our animated host for the evening, vowing to return the next time we get a hankering for some good Italian grub. Indonesian tastes for a traveller’s appetite…
Coto Makassar If you’re familiar with Indonesian cuisine, you’re sure to have come across a dish known as soto. Soto itself is a common soup dish found all around Indonesia and every region has it’s own take on the national dish. The region of Makassar in south Sulawesi calls the dish ‘coto’, although no one is really sure why it’s spelled with a ‘c’ instead of an ‘s’. Coto is made from an assortment of cattle innards such as lungs, heart, liver and intestines mixed with slivers of beef then boiled in a heavy broth filled with an assortment of herbs and spices. The broth itself is made differently using a fermented soya bean paste called tuaco as a thickening agent instead of coconut cream like in other soto dishes. It is commonly served with ketupat (rice cakes) and a slightly sour sambal. beatmag.com 080

If you feel irritable or tired, why not indulge yourself in some way? Even a little treat can be good. This isn’t a good time for extremes (for you, it rarely is), so try to temper it with some optimism. The energy could make you a little nervous and on edge. Being around people you could feel disruptive, and you might be sensitive to other people’s moods and energy. This is not the time for daydreaming or brainstorming -- you need to take action! It may be that your peers are all going off in different directions, but you can go it alone if you have to. You are all fired up with righteous anger (or hope, or even dread). Don’t give in to despair -- it’s one of those times when your situation seems hopeless, but perseverance is sure to pay off this time.
You could experience some minor tensions in relations with your partner and should try to be more accepting of their point of view. It’s slowing in the pace of your plans is particularly relevant where links with others are concerned: partnerships, contracts, teamwork. Your partner might not see the same picture as you do. You stand on opposite sides, staring at each other. You love drama, and your significant other stands aloof. Discuss your feelings with each other, and give your loved one plenty of space to think things out. Under the present celestial configuration feelings can easily be misunderstood. Others may seem quick to point out anything that you miss out - especially at work, so you will need to concentrate.
Gemini May 21 - June 21 Even if they are to blame, there really is nothing to be gained by being angry or trying to get others to take responsibility for the way you’re feeling. Trust your own instincts about this person, and don’t be tempted to believe anything you hear. This could cause you to want to ponder quietly and alone the possible future of this relationship. You may be feeling a bit too attached to someone who’s not good for you -- or maybe just not as good as the competition! Try to resolve these difficulties within yourself before expressing your feelings to your partner. You don’t want any hurt feelings. It’s quite likely that someone close is breathing down your neck, though, so try to get them to back off in the gentlest way possible.

Your significant other will do anything to give you pleasure, and in return, you’ll be trying to predict and make them wishes come true. Who needs your help the most? That’s your most important question, as your energy is best spent on others. The current transits imply that this relationship shows a lot of promise for the future, and is definitely worth pursuing. It could be that you find someone drawn to you for reasons neither of you can understand -- so just go with it! Someone is impressed with you right now, and you would do well to accept their praise. Maybe you are just ready to experience greater closeness and happiness with a soul mate. Right now you could be experiencing a powerful sense of connection to someone.
Have you been resisting the idea of commitment in a current romantic relationship? In spite of yourself, you could find your thoughts moving in that direction. Fantasies of being together for the rest of your lives could pop into your mind unbidden. The current aspect at play suggests that maybe that’s where the relationship is headed, whether you like it or not. Don’t hold yourself back from it. Make your fantasy a reality. You relate to others in a friendly way now and tend to socialize naturally and easily. You need to move forward and start a relationship! It’s time to get a little closer to the person who’s been making eyes at you. You cannot help but blossom in the presence of your significant other, and you radiate happiness all around you.
Education comes in many forms, and you may find yourself quite a bit smarter by the end. There’s a strong chance that anything you begin now, will stand the test of time. This is certainly a time to take advantage of any opportunities that come your way. Starting a new study or retraining plan could also work to your advantage. A whole world of opportunities is there for you to be discovered. All that brainy energy needs to be put to good use -- so go for it! Your concentration and patience threshold will be much higher than usual. Therefore, if there is any task that needs serious thought, study or concentration, then now would be an excellent time to tackle it. You won’t balk at changing your method of working, undertaking a course of training, or even setting up your own business. Something has to give and you have every intention of moving your career in the direction of as much autonomy as possible. You will be in search of excitement, drama and adventure you will now demand personal freedom and independence. The change will be positive, but you will soon see that your life will become very different for you as far as your routine goes. It’s a really good time for you to step up and offer to tackle additional responsibilities. Your lasting power is legendary, you can get plenty done without even trying that hard. Someone is hiding just out of sight in your social circle, and you would do well to ferret them out -- they might have info or resources you can use. Your energy should keep pushing you forward past all obstacles until you reach a goal or milestone that feels satisfying to you. Someone new changes your mind about an important issue, so make sure that you’re listening and can adapt when needed. You will find it impossible to sit still and you should be much busier than usual. Your sincerity and the strength of your convictions will help you remove the irritations that have been causing conflict, and will allow you to start afresh, from a much healthier foundation. In your professional life, your situation is developing, regardless of whether you have made a decision or not, since certain things come to an end while others are starting to see the light.
Your action radius is rather reduced, because the people higher up are not giving you the recognition and trust that you deserve. You may think that neither movement satisfies you anymore. If that’s the case, perhaps you should start your own. Professionally speaking, you are going through a period of reflection, which might cause you to withdraw into yourself somewhat. You may not have much option but to give in. If you can do so graciously rather than being stubborn you may get your way in the end anyway. Have patience. Important personal and business decisions should be postponed until your way of behaving is less impulsive and more practical. Your creative energy is vibrant now, but you need to do something about your inner critic.
It’s a really good idea for you to make some time for yourself so you can listen to that inner voice and heed its advice as closely as you can. Work is tough to handle, even if it’s just one email sitting there staring at you from your in-box. You’ll need some quiet time to yourself, and if this is something unusual for you, you’d better learn how to create some space for yourself. That’s not to say that you should become a monster, just that you need to take care of yourself first and foremost. You know you’re on the right side, which is something, but it might be harder than usual for you to convince the usual suspects. You’re either feeling pretty down, or you’re all the way on top -- there’s just no middle ground for you.

During the process of painting, Suta uses a different method to most artists. The first lines he creates are made with a brush straight onto the canvas without sketching any guidelines. The shapes he designs mainly depict women, primarily focusing on the image of their posterior. The reason for this fascination with the female rear he says is due to the certain excitement felt when he begins to paint this particular subject. His ability to reimagine the movements and sensual outlines of the female anatomy are aspects of his art that are clean and artistic, demonstrated in his series titled ‘Lines of Women Figure’.

THE WORLD IS MY STAGE
Raditya Pandet
Born: 3 Sept 1987, Denpasar. Contact: pandet_studioz@yahoo.co.id
Concept
Raditya Pandet is known for taking a different approach to his art, regularly opposing mainstream methods of stage performance that are applied by the world of theatre. One concept that he is currently laboring upon involves a ‘hyper monologue’, which presents an individual reading through the lines while also handling other factors of the stage performance, such as the setting and lighting. This may sound difficult, but by incorporating the latest in technology to aid in this concept, it is all possible. The themes that Raditya often tackles relate to anti establishment notions as well as issues of sexual discrimination.

Performances
Involved in theatrical arts since he was in junior high school, Raditya has directed several small plays. By joining Teater Antariksa after graduating from school, he was able to perform several of his own written plays which caught the attention of the Balinese theatrical world. In 2005 he formed his own troop called Komunitas Mata which he continues to be active in today. Raditya also participated in a stage performance titled ‘Hong’ with Sanggar Poerbatjaraka in 2008. aking its name from the Bahasa Indonesia word meaning ‘soul’, Jiwa Spa provides a tranquil escape from everyday life, and a place to calm the mind and replenish the body’s precious energy. Jiwa Spa concentrates on water and aromatherapy treatments, incorporating ancient Indonesian traditions and rituals to enhance the experience. A good example of this is the signature treatment Ocean Flow massage, which concentrates on rhythmic strokes of acupressure, akin to the movement of the ocean waves. The luxurious spa facility is enclosed in a secluded compound at the resort, with seven treatment rooms each featuring a massage bed, a deep soaking tub and shower cabinet. The couple’s treatment room holds a freestanding black granite soaking tub for two overlooking the water gardens. With five spa pavilions and two spa villas which flank a 25-metre outdoor pool. Each private villa encompasses indoor and outdoor treatment areas for two, with an ocean or garden vista. A separate relaxation theatre opens out onto a pavilion dining area with outdoor Jacuzzi and steam showers. Jiwa Spa also includes a wellness studio, reflexology centre, and a salon which offers a full range of beauty services including hair care cream baths, manicures, pedicures and waxing.
