Something I’ve noticed lately is that there is so much on offer and so much bombardment of information that it appears to me that nobody takes notice of anything anymore—unless it hits them square in the face, of course. Loss of Focus appears to be the general trend of this present generation and while some people are using new technology to make an impact, others are biding their time, waiting to see what works. Meanwhile we are rocking along like never before and so is Bali. The weather seems to be getting better and the people keep on arriving, more and more, breaking every monthly record and the place is totally grooving to the sounds of the tourist invasion. It makes you wonder why the government doesn’t have enough cash to fix up the roads properly but that’s one of the mysteries. Speaking of my road, our illustrious assistant editor, Aldi, who I spoke briefly about last week, had a motorbike accident on my road after they did a rather dodgy job of fixing it recently. Basically the fix up amounted to a bunch of loose stones all over the road, which his motorbike didn’t agree with on one of the tight bends, thus falling and then breaking some bones—putting him out of action and in great pain all this week. How I wish those roads of Petitenget would be nice, flat and not dangerous one day. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the party goes on all over town. Plenty of action around all the clubs and bars this week and you can read about it in the What’s On and HereNow sections. And if that’s not your scene, there are plenty of dining options and places to have a quiet drink or two too. You can find that in the food section. And well, if you aren’t into going out at all you can always check the art section for inspiration or head up to Ubud for the Bali Spirit Festival for a touch of yoga. Whatever it is you do, have fun, keep away from those Bintang Tshirts (according to Ramshackle’s story this week inside) and have a taste of the real Bali, it could do you some good.

More Awards for Seminyak’s Anantara Resort Anantara Seminyak Resort & Spa has added yet another accolade to its rather large awards cabinet, having recently been nominated for the “Indulge in Luxury 2011” category in the World Hotel Awards. Listed first amongst nine other hotels from around the world, and the only hotel located in Indonesia, Anantara Seminyak Resort & Spa is proudly part of an exclusive collection of just 70 nominated hotels which now officially belong to the World Hotel Best List 2011. Now in its seventh year, the World Hotel Award nominations are based on suggestions from frequent travelers, international opinion leaders and globetrotting celebrities, whose collective preferences are collated to present the best hotels in the world.

CCTV Cameras For Bali Bali is set to have 56 CCTV (closed-circuit television) cameras set up soon in popular areas around Bali. In addition to deterring terrorists, CCTV cameras will be able to monitor the traffic situation in order to prevent congestion and accidents, authorities said. Entry points to Bali like Gilimanuk port, Padangbai port, and Ngurah Rai airport would also be equipped with CCTV. The devices are supported by a variety of technologies such as GPS, GIS, online databases, SMS, Internet, fax and telephone HT and apparently access to traffic information will be available from the Bali Police Twitter and Facebook accounts.

Scoop New resident band at Centerstage Centerstage always push forward for freshness, including music-wise. This time Sterling is the pin-up for Centerstage, Balinese local band plays TOP 40 with mostly rock and RnB songs. With 2 exotic female vocalists, 1 male vocalist and total of 7 members, Sterling will rock Hardrockers daily from Monday – Saturday every night at Centerstage.

TABU for Young Teenagers

Hard Rock Hotel Bali has opened a new venue TABU, which is specifically designed for 13 to 17 year olds. Spanning 252 m2, TABU offers a nightclub equipped with a multi-purpose DJ Booth, Internet and Gaming Lounge with WII, Xbox Kinetic and PS3 facilities, private cinema area, bar and lounge with chill out and pool table areas. TABU is open from 12 noon to 12 midnight daily and offers a “no adults” private club where TABU Members can socialize and enjoy evening entertainment created by them for them. “Our goal is to create authentic experiences that rock for all “young adults” staying at Hard Rock Hotel Bali. To ensure they have a great time during their holiday, making lots of new friends and doings lots of fun things,” says Aulianty Fellina Rizal, Director of Marketing Communication of Hard Rock Hotel Bali. “As every family knows, if the various age groups are happy, everyone’s happy, so we see our Lil’Rock Kids’ Club and TABU venue as a key part of ensuring everyone has a memorable experience.”

Scoop Mike’s Apartment at Rock Bar Rock Bar is bringing Jakarta band Mike’s Apartment who set the trend over the past few years for acoustic music in Indonesia by focusing on minimal music equipment and close quarters vocals. Carrying the banner of live acoustic, the band brings back hot alternative pop rock tunes that dominated the charts over the years (Radiohead, Keane, Third-Eye Blind, Smashing Pumpkins, U2, The Beatles, Stone Temple Pilots, Coldplay) with their own unplugged version. One of the band’s greatest aims is to create fun and togetherness amongst the crowd and that’s what they’ll be doing from 22-23 April, Sunset Time and Night Session at Rock Bar, AYANA Resort and Spa Bali.

Smoking- Free Bali Tourist areas and hotels in Bali are set to be defined as a non-smoking areas. Anyone caught smoking in places designated as non-smoking areas will be liable to a maximum jail sentence of six months or a maximum penalty of Rp 50 million. The Head of the Health Department of Bali, dr. Nyoman Sutedja, said recently that hotel managers will be expected to implement this ruling at each hotel. “We hope the tourism sector will support us – we want to emulate Thailand. We’ll give ratings on hotels, red for a lot of smokers, yellow for less, blue if it’s free from smoke.” The nosmoking policy is related to new local regulations that are being completed by the government. According to the draft, healthcare facilities, places of education, places of recreation, places of worship, airport terminals and other public places will be designated as cigarette free. “A smoking section at the airport will not exist anymore. Even smoking outside the airport will be banned,” said Sutedja to beritabali.com.

The Exotica Secret of Morocco A group of local Bali photographers that operate through blogs and facebook etc are holding an interesting event at Prana Restaurant soon. The group is always on the move to produce creative art forms, including perhaps the female form, good fashion and artistic scenes. The open fashion photo shoot with a Moroccan theme will take place at Prana Restaurant, jalan Kunti, Seminyak, 26 March. Hosted by Rain Photography this event called ‘the Exotica Secret of Morocco”. A totally cool idea for budding photographic buffs and friends.

mamsa & 98.5 the beat radio plus hu’u bar | 18 Mar | 11PM Sounds Like Electronic

Hails From Bali, Indonesia

Has Been DJ Mamsa needs little introduction in these parts. Since re-branding Radio Plus back in the early 00’s into a youth, rock and hiphop station, then pulling the pin and leaving to Perth to study sound engineering and coming back to Bali with a whole new outlook on dance music a couple of years later, Bali’s sound waves have never sounded so good. The reincarnated DJ Mamsa singlehandedly made Bali house music a more interesting soundscape, with a multi-year residency at Living Room that took that venue to amazing heights and since last year freelancing most of the major Bali venues. There are many reasons why Mamsa won the Best Bali DJ at The Beat Awards for the past two years running and one of them would have to be very simple, he spins the best club music going. is Now It’s hard to get anything out of him. I recall asking him a few times, “What the hell is that music you are playing? How would you define it?” He would nonchalantly turn and say, “Oh that’s electronic, man.” Hmmm, nice. So without being able to define what he plays all I can say is that it’s damn good and he can make a night out of nothing! Or was that the booze? Anyways, come down to find out for yourself at Hu’u on Friday night when 98.5fm The Beat Radio Plus presents this young man for your enjoyment. DJ SD.

DJ Yukon DeeJay Club | Sat 19 Mar | 2AM Sounds Like Trance, Progressive

Hails From Sydney, Australia

Has Been From an early age, Yukon had a passion for dance music. The 2001 trance & progressive house sound captivated people and audiences as well as himself. Influenced by the sounds of DJ greats such as Tiesto, Armin van Buren, Ferry Corsten, Dave Seaman and Sasha, it wasn’t too long until he found himself in and out of records stores purchasing their albums. Soon enough a pair of new turntables occupied his spare time and so the journey began... Having been a bedroom DJ for approximately three years, it wasn’t until mid 2003 that Yukon finally came out of his shell by joining the Fixation crew. He proved that he had the skills to handle trance and progressive house beats through his demo CDs, which eventually reached high demand status. In June 2006 he held his first club night at Fixation followed by a breakout performance at Transmission Magic City in May 2007. He’s traveled through several clubs around Russia and Germany, and is slowly gaining a foothold on the international scene. is Now No stranger to the decks of Bali, Yukon will be hitting it up at Deejay Club to entertain the early morning clubbers of the island. If you happened to be finding it hard to get to sleep on Saturday night, you know where to head out to party.

Has Been Eric Larson aka Dirty Larson of the DJ/producing duo Audiokillers rose quickly to astonishing heights on the electro scene in North America. His love for music and nightlife led him to the club and rave scene of the late 90’s where he quickly found a home in nightclub events and promotions. After almost a decade behind the scenes he decided he wanted to be on the stage, so he partnered up with his good friend Chris Paul and they formed Audiokillers in 2009. He’s known for his massive amounts of energy and unique blend of electronic flavour where merely playing a set isn’t good enough, he insists on bringing the crowd somewhere beyond the next state of pure electronic euphoria, if you’re not dancing he’s not doing his job. He has already performed at some of North America’s top venues and opened for superstar artists such as Steve Aoki, Laidback Luke, Designer Drugs, LA Riots, Felix Cartal, Scotty Boy, Charles Feelgood, Austin Leeds and Harvard Bass just to name a few. Audiokillers “Volume” series mixtapes and hard-hitting debut single “Odyssey” are available on Beatport, and have earned them respect as producers with their fans eagerly waiting for more. is Now With his partner holding down the fort in the US, Dirty decided to branch out and travel the world looking to hit up all the top venues. Chris Berry Arma-Ubud | 23 – 27 Mar | 7PM Sounds Like African Tribal Music Hails From California, USA

Has Been Grammy award winning Chris Berry has spent the last 25 years broadcasting the message of unity and acceptance for all people around the world. Through music, dance and cultural education, Chris continues to share his message with a highly energetic style. At 19, Chris accompanied his Congolese musical mentor, Titos Sampa, to the heart of Africa. This journey led Chris into a decade of immersion in Zimbabwean culture studying under tribal elders and musical masters. Chris rigorously acted on his mission, and in 1991 formed Panjea - a band which fused African grooves with American funk and hip hop. Within a year, Panjea had a No. 1 hit and platinum record sales. After four members of the band succumbed to the AIDS virus, Panjea’s career was forced to halt. Yet the impact of Panjea persists as Chris continues to work with variations of the original band and collaborates internationally with artists such as Paul Winter and members of Brazilian Girls, String Cheese Incident and Grateful Dead to name a few. Panjea also lives on through Chris’ nonprofit organization, which supports music education and promotes cultural exchange. is Now Chris Berry will be one of the many international acts participating in this years Annual Bali Spirit Festival music celebration. He will also be sharing the stage with the likes of Ayu Laksmi, Dafra Kura band, Supa Kalulu, Debu, Delhi 2 Dublin and many others.

The band has been together almost five years, and has released three albums including their latest, ‘Planet Electric’. The album title nicely compliments the sextet’s style of music, which plugs directly into the ‘Worldbeat’ style of energy. The Delhi 2 Dublin crew are road warriors, having played major festivals in both Canada and the U.S. including a special appearance during the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. They have become one of Canada’s most talked about bands, and 2011 will only see them enhancing that reputation. are Now Curious as to what a fiddle player rocking out with a kilt-wearing Korean flanked by two bouncing Bhangra percussionists and a Bollywood movie star vocalist might sound like on stage? Reza Bukan Blue Eyes | mon 28 Mar | 10PM Sounds Like Groovie House Hails From Jakarta

Has Been From comedy to DJing - it may sound like quite a far fetched career change, but that is how Reza Bukan began his career in the spotlight. Starting his path to stardom as a radio presenter, his bulky body and humorous off air antics got the attention of a producer who starred him in a comedy horror movie which only brought him more attention. From the big screen Reza ended up hosting TV shows and starring in several sitcoms and TV films. Feeling something missing in his life, he found his calling in Bob Sinclair songs, which lead him to his present career as one of the capital’s best up and coming resident DJs. Having released several tracks on the web, Reza is yet to relinquish his comedy persona many fans still tie to his performances, which he is known to use to good effect sometimes behind the decks and around the bar. Is Now Currently one of Red Square Jakarta’s resident DJs, Reza is no stranger to Bali’s crowd having taken to the stage several times, either as a presenter or spinning out beats for the horde of househeads. ST12 Boshe | wed 30 Mar | 10PM Sound Like Melayu pop/rock Hail From Jakarta

Have Been Formed by members Ilham Febry (Pepep), Muhammad Charly Van Houten (Charly), Dedy Sudrajat (Pepeng) and the late Iman Rush back in early 2005, the band became an instant hit with their classic Melayu rock music that was thought long forgotten back in the 80’s. The name of the band is an acronym for the train station close to the studio that the band would use to practice. With the passing of member Iman Rush at the height of their success, the band soldiered on, with the three remaining members recording their second album ‘P.U.S.P.A.’ which went double platinum in a record breaking three months. The album only gained more success when several of the songs were used as theme songs for local soap operas. With tours all around the country as well as abroad to neighbouring Malaysia, the band have recently released their third album early in 2010 titled ‘Pangeran Cinta’. are Now You can’t go anywhere or turn on the radio without hearing a song by this band, and their revival of Melayu pop/rock music has prompted many newcomers to try their luck in this style of music. Are They Ready for This?

Hu’u Bar’s night out with the Golddigging crew - Jakarta for the Nyepi Weekend

“This is gonna be big. I don’t think they realise what’s coming,” says Chef PM as we meet in my office in Petitenget, Bali a week before heading to Jakarta and Dragonfly for a party that Hu’u Bar’s chef Phil Mimbimi had organized for the Saturday of Nyepi. Flash forward to the Friday night before the party and we’re lining up drinks at the Aston Rasuna downstairs bar – that’s where we’re staying – waiting for other members of the group to arrive. When pressed about the following night, the Chef PM states it again, “This is gonna be big. I don’t think Dragonfly even has an inkling as to what’s gonna happen there tomorrow,” flinging his hands and arms around, eyes rolling back in his head as he does. That Friday night we were cruising with the

Hu’u team. We left Aston Rasuna with the Chef, Johnny from the bar, Jana on the door, Dimas on the floor, Bagoes on the mic, me and my VPA - on the observation deck, and we were on the way to pick up Sean, the man responsible for the lot and taking care of us all for the evening. We ended up hitting the town in an extra large Alpha type Toyota with everyone jammed in going to Lara Djonggrang in Menteng for dinner, Ritz Carlton’s 8 Lounge and Immigrant for drinks, and wound up in Senayan City’s Domain. It was a fun night for the crew to find a certain managerial bonding before the big gig. We ended up drinking way too much under the circumstances, being the night before the show, and just about rolled out of Domain by 3.30am. The Hu’u crew were up at 8am to do breakfast at the Ritz Carlton in Mega Kuningan – not sure how they did that. After dining at a new restaurant in Sudirman, Luna Negra (ordinary service, but I must say it does serve decent food and has an elegant decor), we made it to the front door of Dragonfly. It was early and still quiet, you could say we were right on time. The Hu’u crew was already inside and still standing – with the stamina of a bull the crew was continuing to push the limits. Punters were spilling in as food was being passed around and drinks were supposedly being mixed and handed out – I can’t attest to this fact as I didn’t see any drinks come my way. A bottle was ordered and our little group – or sponsor’s post – began to take shape. The girls arrived – Nanie and the team – always so dependable when along for a good party and didn’t disappoint. The time had arrived for the main event. Sms messages were flying and we were told to get near the front. We just got there as the Rocky music began to play, and the trumpets blew the triumphant arrival of king hitting DJ, Gold Digger. At this point, it appeared the Hu’u chef was right.

It was a show stopper. Dragonfly and its crowd were given a special treat from their Bali cousins – it was bigger than Ben Hur and even sounded reminiscent. It was bigger than any other Saturday night, and really was amazing because something new was happening right in front of DF eyes. The poker-faced crowd had a collective smile on their face. Gold Digger was getting a lot of support around the decks from the team, waving at the crowd and pulling people into the swing, working this foreign and benign crowd into a frenzy. The stylish Jakartan crowd was ready to let their hair down and gave up to the mastery of Golddigger without a fight. There was basically too many people inside to move, one of the biggest nights DF had had in a long time - and definitely fun to be part of. Gold Digger’s playlist of old and new tracks, backed up by the original videos took most people by surprise and on a visual and sonic nostalgia trip mixed with, dare I say it, simple fun. The DF crowd were by his side and they got their collective Gold Digger rocks off! [D. Trauts]

You’ve seen them everywhere. Walking along the sidewalk in small tightly packed groups or roaming the streets in rented scooters in a fashion that can be described as anything other than safe. So who are these pasty skinned people and why are there so many of them? What are the common denominators that unite the Bintang singlet tribe? How can they be joined or avoided? The thing about pretty much all people who wear the Bintang singlet proudly in public is that they are almost certainly tourists. Everyone who lives on the island knows this. The taxi drivers

The Bintang Singlet ford

Feature

know it, the beach hawkers know it, and every salesperson knows it. So why wear something that screams, “I am a tourist”? Given the nature of most transactions in Bali, the tourist banner is almost always going to be a big flag that says “rip me off”. Which leads you to wonder, why would anybody want to project that image? It’s kind of like throwing buckets of blood on your body before jumping in shark infested water. There are a few untested theories on this strange fashion phenomenon. One being that some people are fashion lemmings. Any individualistic style has been completely stripped away and the best option they see is to jump on the bandwagon along with everyone else. As tourists flock to the island, the trend is set to perpetually repeat itself over and over as they imitate one another and leave the island only to be imitated by the next batch of arrivals. Another theory is that maybe the Bintang shirt is cool and everyone not wearing the famous red star is a no-fun square or some sort of fashion elitist who writes critical and pretentious magazine articles. This could be true, go to Poppies 2 on any night and it seems like the universal uniform of getting loose. Maybe it’s completely worth street hawkers constantly trying to off-load their wares upon you at an unreasonably high profit margin. Perhaps there’s an entire world of people whose entire image of travelling abroad to Bali involves

donning the sacred singlet emblazoned with the magical beer to make said holiday that much more rewarding. If it’s good enough to consume, then why not proudly wear and tell the world that you love this thirst quenching beverage of the gods? Another possibility is that some people simply don’t have any appropriate tropical vacation clothes and the utilitarian singlet is the easiest choice. With a great majority of these garments being the Bintang variety, the odds just happened to land on a Bintang tank top. They’re just victims of fashion and probability at the same time. Another intriguing theory is that they’re subconsciously communists and their other favourite shirts are the Che Guevara, the Chairman Mao, and that Heineken shirt they scored in Amsterdam last summer. It may be a residual effect of being brainwashed “Manchurian Candidate” style. These poor souls just think the red star is fashionable until they hear the secret numbers that activate their commie mission objectives. In all likelihood, it’s probably a combination of all of the above theories with some being more or less correct than the others. Regardless of the likelihood of what makes someone don the Bintang singlet, it seems as popular as ever with absolutely no signs of vanishing from this island any time soon and remains a little bit frightening to the majority of people living here.

Rise Against Endgame Four vegan melodic hardcore boys from Illinois have a full sack of oomph to expel. Despite their emo aura, this time the band set less of metal-ish guitar noise and drum rush, in favour of a more mature groove with rock-steady riffs, thoughtful stories and even anthemic choirs (‘Make It Stop’). It’s like listening to Dead Kennedys, Bad Religion, and AFI all at the same time. Solid conscious rock stars taking out both airplay and worldwide charts. DK.

Worm Fodder

Social Distortion Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes A real man should listen to Social Distortion. Why? Because these Cowpunk lads pretty much donated the father figure image in rock ‘n roll culture. Bringing flowers rather than guns, the album is a bittersweet set of harmonies compared to the previous ‘Sex, Love and Rock ‘n’ Roll’. Instrumental track ‘Road Zombie’ is a hard driving guitar song that’s both tuneful and powerful, while 1st single ‘Machine Gun Blues’ is a narrative story of the album. Social D keep the roots strong heftily inspiring. DK.

Surf Nyoman “Doktor” Krisna Mika Takes Out First Ever Keramas Surf Club Family Surf Contest

In a thrilling final that saw the two beachside warungs full of cheering spectators, 17 year old Keramas local Nyoman “Doktor” Krisna Mika sliced and diced the 1.5 meter waves in clinical fashion to rack up the biggest scores and claim a decisive victory in the first ever locals-only Keramas Surf Club Family Surf Contest. The “Doktor” received a brand new surfboard from Knowledge, a Golden Monkey trophy and goodies from Rusty, Kuta Lines, Dragon, Jungle Surf and other sponsors. Kember Wayan, Gus Ade, and Pras also received trophies and goodies for their finals appearance. Gus Ade from Ida’s Warung was the oldest surfer to make it into the final, though finding the smaller waves a challenge. “It was a lot of work for me out there,” he said after the final. “Those guys are a lot younger and were paddling all over the place. I had trouble to get in a good position so didn’t do so good, but it was a lot of fun and great see everybody having a good time!” A total of 29 contestants from only the Keramas area started out the day’s competition that was organized and run by the Keramas Beach Club with judging help by Keramas regulars such as ISC Judge Ketut “Tawan” Wirtawan, ISC 2010 Surfing Champion Putra Hermawan, Agus Purnawan, and Ketut “Kunyit” Suartha amongst others.

beatmag.com 072

A special Longboard four-man heat was run between the last semifinal and the final, which saw three Japanese contestants and Ketut “Tawan” Wirtawan take to the water to show off their Malibu skills, a sight rarely seen at Keramas. Cozzy held off a charging Turucang to win the top spot. Keramas Beach has been used by many different organizations for surf competitions throughout the last few years, but today it was finally the locals’ time to shut down the beach and take it over just for themselves. The level of surfing may not have been extremely high, but the fun and excitement level pegged the meter, especially during the final. Just ask the “Doktor”, who was mobbed and doused with ice-cold Coca-Cola by all his friends as he was trying to made his way back to the warung! The Keramas Surf Club Family Surf Contest 2011 was sponsored by Knowledge, Billabong, Oakley, Rusty, Kuta Lines, Coca-Cola ISC, Baliwaves.com, Bali Horse Riding, Lohas, Liberation, and Corney. nyone from England (like me) will know what I mean when I say that the best time to eat a kebab is usually at around 3.17am in the morning, preferably whilst still heavily intoxicated. Got carried away drinking tequila or sambuca shots, did we? So much the better because now your poor taste buds will have been completely obliterated, thus saving you from actually tasting the contents of your Styrofoam box from the 24-hour 窶話ab shop窶ヲ Brilliantly, Kebab Palace in Tuban bears no resemblance to this scene whatsoever. Having not been down Tuban way for quite sometime I was once again amazed at just how buzzing this area has become, yet Kebab Palace has been around on the block for six years keeping many a happy punter fed and watered. Certified 100% Halal, the meat is imported from Australia, and the olive oil and feta cheese direct from Greece. The street side location makes for great people watching, and I order up a refreshing mango lassie (Rp22.900+) whilst observing the throng of people going back and forth along Tuban’s main street. I’ve brought a couple of friends along to help me out this time, and we soon get stuck into a huge plate of warm pita bread with three dips of babaganoush, tzatziki and humus (Rp63,900+). The call tonight is share and share alike, something I’d definitely recommend, and with this in mind we set about jointly demolishing a Greek salad (Rp34,900+). Easily as good as anything you’ll get around the Med, the huge juicy red tomatoes and crumbly feta don’t even touch the sides. Hankering for some more of the fabulous feta, we order up a plate of cheese bourek (Rp32,900+), which consists of three triangles of filo pastry stuffed with feta and deep-fried. We each order a main kebab dish, namely the mixed shish kebabs (Rp58,900+), chicken doner kebab (Rp38,900+) and the impressive Kebab Palace special mixed kebab (Rp60,500+). The latter consists of lamb, shish kofte and chicken served with pilav rice and pita bread smothered in tzatziki, tomato and onion. The Four Attractant Mosquito Trap. This is the mosquito trap that emits light, vibrations, heat, and a scent to attract and kill mosquitoes across a one acre area. An LED light oscillates at frequencies that are proven to appeal to mosquitoes’ spectral sensitivity, and the trap produces gentle vibrations that excite the insects and draw them in. The trap emits infrared heat to simulate human body temperature and produces the smell of octenol (the same chemical in human breath and sweat) to lure mosquitoes to the trap. As mosquitoes gravitate to the unit, a fan pulls them into a collection net where they are trapped and die of dehydration. An independent medical entomologist tested leading traps and the Four Attractant Mosquito trap captured 1,343 mosquitoes per night on average - far superior to competing models that collected as few as 215. An integrated digital timer turns the trap on and off at any time (and any day) you choose. http://www.hammacher.com/ $249.95

Your willpower is strong at this time with the onward - forward approach. You’ll have the physical energy, emotional stamina, and the drive you need to initiate projects. Good time to go after what you want, not pushily, but with determination and conviction. A restlessness has been growing in you and you may be seeking some adventure. Unless you want to attract criticism, you should tone down your behaviour. It may go against your natural instincts, but the stars favour taking one small step at a time. You pursue desires quickly and express your own sense of self and identity with enthusiasm and courage. If you have been inclined lately to drag your heels or hesitate over important decisions, your mood will turn resolute.

The pressure is on you and a muchneeded respite will certainly help to recharge your batteries. Whether you are making a bid for freedom, recognition or reward, a rare burst of intensity puts you in the spotlight. Your mood may seem rebellious to some, but others will admire the different slant you put on situations. You feel relief or anticipation as a chapter of your life closes and another exciting one open up. If you spot something that you really want, there will be no holds barred as you go after it with a vengeance. Some tension in personal relationships, but nothing that cannot be worked through if you want them to continue. You have plenty of star power at your disposal and should use it wisely to lead others and challenge yourself.

Gemini May 21 - June 21 You may be feeling defeated if you have not made plans. Don’t let people decide what you can and cannot do. You have to start calling the shots if you want to feel good about yourself and your future. You have the ability to make intuitive estimates of personal situations that can be quite startling in their suddenness and accuracy. This is the time to put your personal papers in order and make some fabulous changes that will help you start anew. Taking a new approach or trying out the way people do things will enable you to meld your ideas together, bringing about something new and possibly profitable. Personally, it is time to assert yourself and move forward with your plans that have been germinating for a long while.

You will be paralyzed if you think only of how others will react to your decisions. You really do know what is best, and everyone will benefit when you act upon your beliefs. This is no time to be wishywashy. It’s a great time to meet new people and show them how awesome you are - the right words come much more easily to you now. Something you see or hear helps you take a step in a slightly different, much better direction - perhaps in an important relationship (or one that’s becoming important!). If you know you’ve been rigid, perhaps clinging on to what you were taught as a child rather than forming your own opinions, someone could come along now and help or force you to rethink your philosophies.

Once you truly understand who you are and how you operate, you can make decisions that meet all your needs in a healthy and growth-oriented way. However, because you have been bitten in the past, you will not be easily persuaded to tackle ventures that seem beyond your capability or resources. Realistically, there is no going back but now that a lesson has been learnt you must use the knowledge wisely. Turn negatives to positives. It will not be easy to take responsibilities for your future and break with the past, but the necessity for independent action will be undeniable. You need to take better care of yourself as you have been running around in circles for so long that you are almost giddy.

Over analysing past mistakes or situations you are currently facing will be a waste of time and will lead to anxiety and bad feelings. A desire for stability will be your focus and you will be toeing to conventional line in regards to personal activities. Make sure that your personal interests are well represent and that your need to be out front is met. An intense and thorough reality check will reveal the true nature of a life changing situation in regards to personal activities. If you have your eyes open for a new relationship, don’t fall into the trap of judging by appearance. Some cynics may say that by fearing the worst, we can only be delighted at whatever happens, but you know that is no

way to live! Part of you may wish to maintain the status quo, but an underlying restlessness could see you searching for greener pastures. The planetary patterns hint at change for you but first you must review your current circumstances and relationships. You may be faced with making some big changes to certain areas of your life and will need to think things through. Whatever you are going through now is just the beginning of a new phase of exciting experiences. There are a lot more changes ahead. Personally, proper consideration for any changes should be made to prevent finding your-self abruptly swinging on a shaky limb. If you are not happy with your personal life, this is the time to make changes to improve situations.

You’re not entirely crazy about the changes that are happening right now, but you know deep down that change is an important part of life so you are that much more willing to accept it. Anything you start is likely to change in unexpected ways. Plans get foiled, surprisingly there can be an unlikely turn of events. If possible, try to accept that what’s changing now is doing so because it’s either for the best in some way, or just part of the natural rhythm of life. This is an ideal time for taking the initiative, for introducing an important change or new method that you were unable to implement before. If you’re looking for work, make those phone calls and arrange interviews!

Allow yourself to be guided by your intuition, you’ll meet no resistance from your colleagues. You’re holding all the cards, so start dealing! Try to listen to the important messages being sent from your inner psyche - your inner self. Dreams may seem more meaningful than ever before, and for a very good reason. Too much prudence and a lack of confidence - either in yourself or in your partners - could mean that you let these chances pass without seizing the moment... What a shame! You may be asked to do something you really don’t want to do. You may not want to agree to this, but feel obliged to help out, thus feeling compromised. If so, try

not to bottle up your feelings. Meet your responsibilities and be accountable for your actions. You can break free for a while and go exploring in order to relax. You feel restless, there is conflict between preserving the status quo and your more personal urges, leading to awkward feelings and possibly some embarrassing scenes. If you’ve already been struggling with one or both of those financial issues recently, matters can be expected to come to a head. Avoid impractical use of money, as it could leave you regretful. Listen to your dreams. Their messages can keep you from making costly mistakes! Beware financial extravagance. Personal and love relationships could also find themselves in the firing line. Perhaps this would be a good time to take a short break or holiday, but

do not spend too much. Do not try to accomplish too much, too quickly - and do not promise more than you can deliver. Financial extravagance and blind optimism may also deplete cash flow. Beware squandering money on unnecessary items, which may seem luxurious now but will be completely useless in a short time. Something in the air might make you reconsider the value some of the things that you thought were great accomplishments over the past. You tend to be a practical person, but you might feel a little disgruntled at having to concentrate on mundane matters like your budget. Your attention will be drawn to financial matters now although feelings and emotions may override your intellect. Careful, this may lead to

excess spending! Your energy might be high as you speed from one encounter to the next. Just remember to keep your folders or documents with you, because it could be easy to leave them behind! Your feelings could be easily hurt during this time, and in retaliation, you may strike out verbally against anyone, and everyone, within shouting distance. The minus side is that your anger will not be justified and may relate to something that happened long ago - an event which everyone but you has forgotten. The energy presently could create some gossip and floating complaints, and if you put out any dramatic comments, they could backfire on you. You may currently feel an overwhelming desire to impose your own ideas, or simply express yourself as an individual.

SPRINGS OF

POETS 2011

Alliance Francaise Denpasar launches the poetry book ‘Couleur Femme’ - a collection of Balinese texts by ten young Indonesian poets (Pranita Dewi, Moch Satrio Welang, Purnamasari, Muda Wijaya, Vivi Lestari, Wayan Sunarta etc) translated into French for the Spring of Poets 2010, and co‐published with the Forum Jakarta Paris. A collection of poems and paintings discover an unusual Bali - a Bali that the gods have not left, but that is undermined by new aspirations. Besides the book launching there will be also tribute to Georges Brassens and Andrée Chedid, and an exhibition around the theme of PDP 2011: ‘Infinite Landscapes’ with Komunitas Semut Ireng Photography (Vivick Bolang and friends). HEAD IN THE by Carola Vooges CLOUDS

In contrast to her mammoth 2009 retrospective at the Griya Santrian Gallery, ‘Head in the Clouds’ is a minimal presentation of only five surprising new works. In them Vooges turns her eyes upwards to acknowledge the sky, planets, moons, stars, celestial phenomenon and comets while noting parallels with her first love; the sea. The grain and colouration of the carefully selected woods Vooges uses add yet another dimension. These are like the sonic sub-tones that make the resonance of certain instruments richer and fuller of expression. Her unusual forms and textures and structure also demand our full attention if we are to appreciate her melodies and harmonics. So, too, her deep connection with Bali - Vooges’ home for more than two decades - shimmers beneath the surface. The old balance between humans and nature, sky and ocean strike equilibrium. With her head in the clouds, Vooges has embarked on a new course into the heart of space.

WHOSE CANVAS IS THIS ?

Arie

Dyanto Concept

Arie Dyanto

Born : 25 January 1974, Klaten, Central Java

beatmag.com 102

This young and talented artist exhibited several of his works at the ‘Indonesian Disjunction’ exhibition at Kendra Gallery last year. He amazed many eyes during the month long exhibition which was attended by over 500 people. Viewers weren’t only astounded by his talent but also by his creative concepts expressed through his art pieces. As an avid bike rider, his love for the two wheeled contraption was clearly seen in his artworks. Painting serial pieces of individuals riding bikes, he sometimes paints his friends from his biking club instead of creating self portraits of him riding a bike. He also adds tattoos on the bodies of his models to give more character to the objects in his paintings. The different tattoos all have different meanings. Moreover, he mainly uses dark colours in his paintings, which according to him, is the best colour combination to characterize his masterpieces.

Exhibitions

Arie has exhibited his works of art at various galleries around the country, building a hefty reputation for himself. He has showcased his paintings at such galleries as Kendra Gallery in Bali, the National Gallery in Jakarta and Jogja Gallery in Jogjakarta plus many others. He is considered as one of the best up and coming contemporary artists of today to come from Bali.

Spa

S

pa at The Elysian was designed with just one thing in mind - to reflect the beauty and charm of modern Bali while still respecting the traditions and history that made this the ‘Island of the Gods’. Escape to a spa treatment at The Elysian and enjoy these rituals to rejuvenate your body. Check out the Royal Balinese Ritual and be pampered by this day spa experience that will cleanse your very soul. This is a classic ‘must-try’ ritual whilst holidaying at the Elysian, consisting of a footbath, Balinese massage with herbal body exfoliation, a Balinese boreh body mask and herbal bath treatment (Rp. 800K++/150 minutes). Also consider the Hydrating Seaweed Ritual. Seaweed contains minerals that help to disperse local fatty deposits ensuring soft, fresh and healthy looking skin. Using it as body wrap encourages the skin to absorb minerals that are essential for restoring moisture and vitality. The treatment consists of a footbath, relaxing body massage, seaweed body exfoliation, seaweed body wrap and milk bath treatment (Rp. 800K++/150 minutes). Lastly, the Detoxifying Volcanic Ritual purifies, revitalizes and tightens the skin. Volcanic ash absorbs toxins and the clay stimulates blood flow, which exfoliates and cleanses right from the opening footbath ritual, relaxing body massage, volcanic mud body wrap and sea salt mineral bath treatment (Rp. 750K++/120 minutes).
