It’s hard to believe that the traffic through central Kuta is at a standstill at 1.30am on a Sunday night but it is. We happened to be down there last weekend. Cars were backed up along Jalan Legian from Poppies Two area all the way back to where the old Matahari used to be with engines off, taxi drivers asleep inside and the only way down to the action was to walk. Of course everyone knows that you only go down to Kuta on your motorbike, but it’s crazy that the local authorities don’t do something to fix this problem– a problem quite easily fixed. You don’t have to be a brain surgeon to figure out that all it takes is to build a few taxi ranks along that stretch of Legian Kuta and the police do their job of controlling the traffic flow. Sure, it has always been like it, there’s surely some kind of local politics involved and nobody wants a police state, but it appears to me Kuta entertainment and our nightlife, is being hijacked by a bunch of sleeping taxi drivers. Just imagine being able to grab a taxi from your house, get dropped off out the front of your fave bar downtown and walking outside later to easily get a cab home. Not so hard to imagine, is it? Well, it shouldn’t be. Bali is growing fast with more and more people living and visiting here, and it must be time to evolve with it and fix some of these issues, one by one, that plague this town before the whole place becomes unbearable. More words from our beloved and erudite VIP Card Members... Likes: Personally I enjoy the content of your magazine I find it informative about events and when the not only big acts come to Bali.... It also gives you an insider to where to go if you are not familiar with the hotspots of Bali and Jakarta.... Keep up the good work..... I get excited every time I see a new copy is out! Dislikes: Not much other than the size of the magazine..... It deserves to be printed on a larger format so it escapes the small insignificant property magazines that are full of VILLAS VILLAS oh wait VILLAS... Ok we get it Bali is full of Villas for rent, lease or sale. Now Go Away!!! Conrad. Ok... Well I like to read the beat online. I like the up-to-date info the beat provides. I think some of the articles could be a bit more detailed (but I’ve been told, in general, that I like more details than your average person). Also, archived articles may be helpful. For example, I just read about the appeal to the order to close Ubud Hanging Gardens, but I still don’t know why that place is being required to close down. I assume that a previous article covered that already. I did not like that one of your links did not work. It was one to obtain a VIP Card, of course! Laosy. Scoop Bintang Beer Wins Gold

After the Bintang Singlet exposé in last week’s TB, which the local Bintang boys were quite chuffed with and gave us a call to give congratulations, they were also pleased to announce that Bintang Beer has just won a very prestigious award in London. The famous Indonesian beer has been named a Gold Medal Winner at the Brewing Industry International Awards (BIIA) 2011, a competition often dubbed “the Oscars of the Brewing Industry”. The win marks the first Gold medal by Bintang Beer at the BIIA which the brew has also entered for the first time. The award recognizes Bintang Beer as one of the world’s finest beers and reaffirms Bintang as an outstanding commercial example of its style. Having participated in the Lager category of between 3.8% and 4.7% alcohol by volume, Bintang Beer was amongst the 796 entries that competed across 9 categories and 32 classes. Judged by professional brewers who are experts in tasting and commercial beer evaluation, Bintang Beer stood out in terms of distinct quality and commercial value. On the milestone, Mr Leo Evers, President Director of MBI commented, “We are very proud and delighted that Bintang Beer has been accorded with the highest honour in its class at the BIIA 2011. The award underlines our commitment to serve only first class Bintang Beer through brewing excellence and using only superior ingredients in our beer production. To keep satisfying the thirst for quality brews, we remain steadfast in delivering the superior taste of Bintang Beer that has long been appreciated by our customers and consumers who made Bintang Beer, the beer of Indonesia today.” Nice words for a nice beer. It’s one of the most popular in Bali and we often have a taste ourselves. On 12 April 2011, Bintang Beer will receive its Gold medal presented in the City of London.

Potatohead Sunday Market Potatohead Beach Club has a new way to end the weekend in style before confronting the hectic work week ahead. Every Sunday the beachfront club will transform into a lazy Sunday market of sorts, offering up some of the island’s best produce and then some. All your culinary desires can be found here from fine wines, amazing cheeses, French peasant breads, unique spices, a flower market as well as a gourmet BBQ to be enjoyed after a day of shopping. The market starts from noon and is open until 7pm all through April.

Scoop Double Six is still Open

Manager and DJ at Double Six Club Fadi

Double Six Still Open: Let the Festivities Begin! The Beat caught up with Fadi, manager and DJ at Seminyak’s Double Six Club, for a quick chat yesterday. The rumour mill has been working overtime lately about the present and future of 66 Club, and Fadi came in to set the record straight. “Double Six is not closed” he stated, adding: “We will be closing in the second week of September, but until then we’re having the biggest festivals you have ever seen at 66 Club.” Since Double Six hasn’t been having any major events lately, people around town seemed to think it was no more. “I was in a new outdoor venue recently and it was very busy, but the atmosphere and the music wasn’t too good, and a few people said to me, ‘ahhh, it was better back at 66, wasn’t it?’ I asked, ‘so, why don’t you go down there?’ ‘It’s closed, isn’t it?’ they all said! The rumours have been active lately and I’m just here to set the record straight, 66 Club is definitely still open!” Double Six is one of the most famous clubs in the country and all over Southeast Asia having held massive events and regular nights over the past 24 years to packed houses and critical acclaim. It may not have been really busy lately but that is all set to change as the countdown begins for the final D Day.... Demolition Day, that is. The first festival will be a local rock and music festival called Bali Bike Week Festival 2011 with a whole bunch of local bands starting from 12 noon and going to late with international DJs taking over at the right time. The festival is on both the Saturday and Sunday of the last weekend of April. There’ll be biker displays, international tattoo artists, body suspension, rock n’ roll and rave parties mixed in with local Balinese cultural dance, handicraft markets, food and stuff for the kids. In May they have a massive international DJ planned and for each month until the final demolition party, large festivals are planned to send Double Six off in style. “We could have just closed the club now and forgotten it, but I know there are a lot of people who have great memories of the place and everyone involved wants to send her off in style,” finished Fadi.

Mandel Turner SOS Supper Club | wed 6, sun 10 Apr | 9PM & 5pm Sounds Like House, indie, soul Hails From France

Has Been Having been in the musical business since the late 80’s, Mandel Turner continues to live through music and try to make a difference with his rhythms. A native of Brooklyn, New York, Mandel Turner’s musical background can be traced back to the time when he sang in Gospel choirs at church. Growing up in New York allowed him to absorb a wide spectrum of urban music that included soul, R&B, pop, rock, and the powerful influence of disco and club culture. In the early 1980s, with the experience of weekends spent under the musical spell of DJ Larry Levan at New Yorks infamous Paradise Garage club, Mandel’s desire to pursue a career in music was sparked. After a number of musical collaborations in New York that included recording with famed disco producer / songwriter Patrick Adams ( producer of groups - Inner Life, Musique, Phreek) and performing live at clubs like Tracks NYC, Mandel was anxious to seek new experiences and travelled to Paris in 1987. It wasn’t long before he was developing connections, working with producers, writing songs for himself and other recording artists and singing background vocals on several recordings. Tagged as ‘the voice of New York-style garage music in Paris’ by Didier Lestrade in ’99, Mandel celebrates the spirit of soulful dance music through his own music creations. IS Now Mandel Turner will be performing in Bali at two shows at SOS Supper Club. First for an late show on the 6th of April, and then again on the 10th of April for a special sunset session. Get a taste of some class, when Mandel takes to the stage at SOS Supper Club.

The Beat sat down and talked with this ‘full life’ man. You’re well known as someone who’s seen ‘mobile’ a lot on a daily basis. Is it your everyday rhythm or is it a never ending- exhausting road? Since my position is in the Sales division, all of these activities are no longer just a lifestyle, but it’s the necessitates to meet my goals. It’s not a tiring long run but I enjoy what I’m doing. If we love our job, I’d say nothing is strenuous.

So Flapjaks is a part of Rama Restaurants Bali? I handled some restaurants but now my focus is more to the Flapjaks house of pancake & homemade gelato, with branches in Jalan Kartika Plaza, Jl. Cemara Sanur, Kuta Beach, Jl Petitenget, and Mal Bali Galeri.

Your version of a successful marketing person is? A good image maker, communicates well, stays visible for everyone, and bright marketing ideas.

Any big challenges? The big challenge is how to build the best brand image for each venue, and how to handle it. It’s simple though. Stay in existence - be seen in the scene, publicity in print and electronic and creating fresh events or attractive programs for the public. Meeting, dealing with different colleagues and clients everyday, how do you get them ‘in hand’ for your good work flow? Colleagues and clients are a big part of our success now. Marco “Polo” Cecere Using the name of the famous adventurer, Marco “Polo” Cecere also takes his listeners on a musical journey with every track he creates. We catch up with him as he promotes his latest project with Metis Bali.

beatmag.com 062

So tell us a little about yourself, who you are and how you got into music? I’m an ordinary person, like anyone else really and I’ve always loved music. My father may have been a baritone singer but I don’t think he was the one who lead me to music. I actually stumbled into my passion for music through my friends and close acquaintances. What can we expect from your new CD? Of course a lot of fantastic songs and its full of top international artists from German top label Get Physical Berlin. Major labels such as EMI, Universal are also present as well as artists from Paris, like “Nova Nova” and “Paris Combo” What style of music is dominant in this album? I think it contains more eclectic style music with its own portions of breaks, electronic, ethnic, jazz, deep house, indie, disco, and metropolitan beach sounds as well as Brazilian Bossa. The kind of music to listen to while enjoying relaxing a sunny day. Why did you decide to take this project with Metis Bali? I decided to accept the offer by Mr. Sahid and Mr. Dou Dou, the owners of the Metis because it seemed like an interesting project for me. Another reason why the offer was hard to decline is the name Metis, which in Italian means “mixed”, which was a perfect description of my music. Are there any special messages you have related to this compilation? No particular messages really. I saw the project as one that could be interpreted by the listener and let the music become a stimulation of fantasy.

Who have you collaborated with for this album? I collaborated with many artists and many of them have sent me their songs to give the special Marco Polo Touch. Some of the names I worked with include Francoise Hardy, Iggy Pop, Noze, Nova Nova and Paris Combo. I also worked alongside top major music companies that agreed with my music concept of project and granted me the licenses for the songs. Big thanks to them all! It was a very hard and long job to complete, but in the end I did it! Who was your favorite artist to collaborate with? The only artist I like to work with is music! Could you imagine a world without music? I work more with the music and less with the person behind it. What music do you like to listen to when not producing music? I like to listen Dodecaphonic style music. What do you like to do to pass your time? With the very little spare time I have on my hands I like to cycle and enjoy nature while relaxing. How big is music to your life? As I mentioned earlier, I couldn’t imagine a world without music. Music may not be everything for some but I see it as a part of life. You could say music for me is the soundtrack of my life. What next can we expect from you? For sure a lot of new projects on the horizon! With my entertainment concept brand name, a double album CD is currently in the works titled “Passport ...to Paradise II” and “Electronic Journey part 2”. Another new project is “Temple of Gold” which will include cutting edge sounds like I did in my other projects “Life” and can also be heard in “Metis Bali”.

Lupe Fiasco Lasers Plenty of twitter pre-announcements about this album seems to have had a good impact, with it shooting straight to number one on the Billboard 200 in its very first week. I suspect that the rapper’s statement of retirement has also perhaps given the album a bit of extra clout. Among other producers, the Neptunes lend a hand on a few of the tracks, nicely complimenting Lupe’s original attitude. All in all a solid album from this teetotal, non-clubbing, Allah-worshipping rapper. High album sales and plenty of limelight are sure to follow, whether he likes it or not. DK

The grommets were frothing the whole day, and the crowd on the beach was a mix of proud parents, baffled farmers, water buffalos, and a few hot chicks. The first semifinal of the under 16 groms was a highlight of this event. The grommets impressed the judges and the crowd with floaters, airs, roundhouses and even small barrels. In the final heat the judges decided that Jihar from Gerupuk, a village around ten minutes from KutaLombok, was the stand-out surfer of the day and therefore won the contest. Mohamad Rifai, who won the Lombok GromSearch in 2009, was dominating the final heat and took his second grom search title.

beatmag.com 070

The international judging panel, consisting of Rip Curl’s teamrider Pepen Hendrik, Gobleg, Lombok local Kimen, and Ado and Jeremy, both Bukit Boardriders from Australia, were excited about the enthusiasm and the skills of the grommets. Dhanny Madaniah, Rip Curl’s event-manager, who organized the GromSearch for the third year was glad to see so many kids enjoying this event. After the awards were given to the winning kids, Dhanny had a series of fun games and giveaways that incorporated a beach cleanup. This incentive was part of Rip Curl’s environmental program known as ‘Rip Curl Planet’. All in all, it was one of the most memorable GromSearch events ever in Lombok. Rip Curl wants to thank all people who were involved and participated in this GromSearch. Special thanks goes to Pak Kimen, his team, and all the people of Kuta, Lombok.

Food review

Aviary Restaurant

The increasingly popular Seminyak Square shopping centre has come a long way since the early days of empty stores and underground nightclubs… These days along with the weekly covered market, high-end fashion boutiques and lifestyle stores jostle for space with the mounting number of eateries popping up in this pleasant little corner of Seminyak. Sure, Jl. Laksmana might be more well known, but who wants to spend all day stumbling up and down a busy street when Seminyak Square holds everything you need with easy access, ample parking and a relaxed atmosphere all in one place. Tucked at the back of the complex is newly opened Aviary restaurant. The modern, breezy yet minimalist black and white themed interior gives way to a few seating options set outside on the boardwalk area, giving the place a certain trendy European café feel. Don’t let the contemporary design fool you though, the emphasis here is on hearty Western and Asian food, exciting flavours, and above all value for money. beatmag.com 080

The experienced Jakartan chef has put together a menu that covers everything from brunch through to dinner, with an amply filled menu featuring appetizers, sandwiches, mains, soups, salads, pizzas, pastas, rice and noodle dishes and desserts – not to mention teas, coffees, juices and plenty of other juicy beverages to beat the heat during shopping sessions. Dragging the missus by her ear past all the boutiques, we arrive at Aviary mid afternoon and get seated al fresco out the front. The attentive and helpful waiting staff immediately rush over and make us feel very welcome as we order a refreshing citrus squash (20k) each. A few friends join us and we soon set about ordering some of the tasty looking dishes off the menu including the pumpkin cream soup (24k), scampi (38k), potato drumsticks (28k), and a bowl of tropical fried rice (30k) to share out as starters. No complaints from anyone so far, but for me the highlight was the scampi – fat juicy prawns in a deep fried batter with mayo style dip. Actually served in half a pineapple, the tropical fried rice also goes down well due to the sweet chunks of tangy fruit.

Starters duly guzzled and it’s time to turn our attention to the mains. The new menu offers plenty of choice, so after much deliberation we settle for the triple deck grilled smoked beef sandwich (36k), spaghetti with prawn tomato and basil (38k), chicken green curry over rice (35k), and my personal favourite; stuffed beef tenderloin roll (50k). Served with mini roasted style potatoes, four thin rolls of succulent tender tenderloin are stuffed with mushrooms and herbs and drizzled in gravy. Delicious taste and fantastic value. In fact, pretty much all the dishes on the menu fall between the 30 – 70k mark, which these days – especially for Seminyak – is something of a rarity. Further good news on the price front is that Aviary are currently running a weekday lunchtime promotion where you can get 50% off on all sandwiches. All the more reason to check out this great addition to the dining options in Seminyak Square. Dan Ashcroft 081 beatmag.com

Soto Betawi-Jakarta Jakarta’s Betawi ethnic group is known for its ability to combine various different cultural influences and make them their own. One culinary example of this is the Betawi take on the traditional bowl of soto. Unlike the slightly thick broth used in common soto, the Betawi version uses coconut cream or milk as its thickening agent, making the broth white and paler than usual soto. Soto Betawi is filled with almost every edible part of the cow, except the cowhide. Be ready for pieces of snout, ear, feet, and an assortment of innards - or if you’re really lucky you may sometimes get slivers of torpedo (penis or testicle). To cut down the richness of the broth, slices of tomato, potato and scallions are added. The dish is always served with rice and thick sweet soy sauce plus a slice of lime as a condiment. beatmag.com 084

It’s a really good time to work on yourself, if you’ve got any personal goals or ambitions you have yet to meet. You’ve got energy to spare, but by staying calm you’ll be able to weigh the pros and cons of all your decisions before acting on them. It’s a good idea for you to consider new options and make sure that you’re seeing the big picture. As far as your emotional life is concerned, you feel as if you’ve finally fitted together all the bits of the jigsaw that will add up to lasting relationships. If you’ve been waiting for news about a loan, mortgage, or other financial arrangement, you should hear something soon. You may have to make changes or adjustments in schedule, but you should find yourself being adaptable and flexible. Changes in your mood mean you can more easily alter your course or change set patterns and be receptive to any possible adjustments. You are the focal point of all the positive change that is happening -- in fact, you may be instigating it! Fantastic changes are in store! If some friends are planning a huge get-together, go along. You won’t regret the journey! As your logical, rational mind is in balance with your intuition, abstract and creative thoughts and ideas could be made concrete reality.

In this benevolent atmosphere you have every chance of connecting with people of influence that could open up splendid opportunities for you. Curiosity about the past could come over you. Perhaps a specific historical personage or event has stimulated your interest. As a result, you might want to explore books, the Internet, or other sources of information. You could spend the time composing clever e-mails that make the recipient giggle with glee. Or you might woo someone with a romantic poem or a naughty limerick. You’ll enjoy playing with language and shaping words in creative ways. The current celestial energy indicates that this could be the type of relationship that causes you to grow together - spiritually as well as emotionally.

Dec 22 - Jan 20

Jan 21 - Feb 18

Your ability to attract attention, investments, suitors or whatever else you desire is heightened right now, so make sure that all of the right people know that you are available! Your intuitive powers are heightened, which is saying quite a lot. You can act on hunches that others would keep subdued and expect good results. This is a good time to immerse yourself in the company of other people. Although sometimes you prefer to be on your own, you’ll enjoy more social energies now. Explore your artistic or creative side -- there’s a lot more going on under the surface than you may have realized yet. You might be getting a lot of positive feedback from others, and you could soon imagine yourself lucky.

Try to pay attention to the smallest details of your life -- they are the ones that can offer you the best guidance. One of your friends or colleagues needs help in reinvigorating their environment, so show them what to do. You may want to check in with the doctor, start a food diary or just commit yourself to a more positive course of action. All should go well. Exercise is on your mind in one way or another -- maybe it’s just all the new runners or gym-goers prodding you, or maybe it’s something deeper. In any case, better health is yours if you want it. There could be an undercurrent of tension as inner issues that have not yet been resolved begin to come to the surface. Don’t suppress them. This is your opportunity to bring them out into the open and begin to heal them. Doing so will bring greater confident.

You should concentrate your high energy levels on work and career matters, as you could be presented with unusual and potentially lucrative opportunities. Your ability to work hard, coupled with determined ambition, should produce excellent professional and career achievements. You have plenty of suggestions, you argue your case brilliantly and you make headway with your projects. You might even start to count your chickens before they’ve hatched - just for once, success is a certainty! Promotion or business expansion is likely. Help and support may come from established and respectable sources, possibly from older colleagues or parents. You can find yourself particularly enthusiastic about a job you see advertised.

Pisces Feb 19 – March 20 It’s more likely to be positive than negative, but that doesn’t make it any easier. It’s best to do it quickly, but your good judgment is vital. Others will have to go along with these changes or they will be left behind in a cloud of dust as you, energetically, blaze a powerful trail to better and greater personal ambitions and achievements. You can tackle big problems -- it’s quite a bit easier than usual for you to tear them apart and make sense of their component parts. A little boredom never killed anyone, and it might give your mind the room it needs to wander freely and come up with new ideas. It is all about recycling -- in all its forms. You can (and should) rid yourself of excess, but you need to make sure that you also reuse anything that can somehow be given new life.

‘The Lines That Remind Me Of You’ is a window on how Agung visits his past through art. The drawing iron installations that he has been working on for two years elaborate this concept related to memory: either as something really personal or as something in a bigger context constructed by history. The shadows created from light hitting the 3D iron installations reflect memories,

which sometimes appear blurred. Agung’s experimentation with a unusual mediums shows his resistance to artistic establishment notions. Already familiar with drawing, for this exhibition Agung will also explore watercolours and iron for the theme he’s been working on. Agung believes that every material or medium that he chooses, has its own reason; either logical or romantic.

Through theater, Indra Parusha tries to alter people’s notions that modern theater can only be enjoyed by the art loving crowd. The unknown truth is that theater itself is divided into many different aspects, which include modern drama, operets (opera cabaret) and pantomimes. By inviting his fellow artisans and theater lovers to come up with concepts differing from that of current trends, Indra believes that the theatrical arts can be appreciated by anyone and by thinking outside the box he also believes that other forms of art can reach this level of mainstream acknowledgement.

PERFORMANCES

Indra began his career on stage when he was still in high school and took an active part in Mask Theater performances. Some of the modern dramas he has performed in include ‘Begug Membuat Harga’, monologue ‘Kasir Kita’ by Arifin C. Noor and ‘Grrr’ by Putu Wijaya. He eventually established his own public theater in Bali which he named ‘Kini Berseri’ and has performed several operets since its formation. His most recognized performance with Kini Berseri was the operet titled ‘Dinding Waktu’ which won Best Director (Maulana Putra Dandiasri) and Best Artistic Makeup at the Gelar Teater Lajose 2010. He is currently busy directing the monologue ‘Surat Kepada Setan’ by Putu Wijaya which will be presented at the Sastra Welang Monologue Awards 2011 in May.
