The TIME magazine online article last week telling the world that Bali had severe infrastructure problems is nothing new to many observers around town but has served a great purpose in opening a public debate on the problem. While some local officials made predictable knee-jerk reactions by attacking the critical article and its author, the Governor, to his credit, stood up and took full responsibility for the problems affecting Bali including the traffic and beach pollution. He said he would do everything possible to make it right. We are hoping that besides a few new roads being built and the beach cleaned up every morning there will be a major town planning scheme developed soon with input from the community, professionals and government. Of course nobody wants to lose Bali’s charming chaos but the traffic situation is fast becoming a major issue and let’s face it, nobody likes to live with massive traffic jams if they can be avoided. To keep in touch with what is going on around you, subscribe to The Beat Daily by going to beatmag.com and registering for the TBD—leave a comment while you are there. Good Charlotte is the big news for the next week in Bali. They play live for the first time at Boshe. More What’s On and Here Now inside. Words from out VIP Card members: I always make sure that every time I am in Bali I get a copy of Beat Magazine. I love that your mag has all the nightlife events that are going on in the clubs, plus you advertise restaurants and it’s nice try different ones and I figure if you promote them they must be good. I just enjoy reading your mag with its different stories etc. Plus I really love that now I can have a discount card through your magazine. Kendell Edgar The beat has been quite fabulous lately, the restaurants reviews and clubs review have been great!!!! The only thing I dislike, just the fashion spread. The layout is soooo amateurish and the models are soooo blaaaaah! Haaa Sorry, u should use better fashion stylish and better and cuter models, be more selective on models. Cheers! Verdi

What’s New at JP’s? Regulars to JP’s Warungclub on Jl. Dhyana Pura will be surprised to see that the previously pokey venue has undergone a slight facelift. The once quaint and cozy spot now has a new trendy and updated look, with the bar now stretching the length of the right hand side of the venue. The new look is to match recently opened sister club Maria Magdalena a few steps away from JP’s. Also new to JP’s is a new chef. Those who celebrated Valentines here will remember Nizar Achmad’s guest chef appearance. He is now in charge of the kitchen, preparing great dishes for the diners as well as spicing up the JP’s Menu.

Good Charlotte Boshe | Fri 22 Apr | 10PM Sound Like Punk rock Hail From Maryland, USA
HaVE Been You would think that using a title of a children’s book as the name of a band would emasculate your image. Not so for Good Charlotte. This American rock band, hailing from Waldorf, Maryland have been pumping out punk skater rock style tunes since the release of their debut self-titled album in 2000. In 2002 their second album ‘The Young and the Hopeless’ sold over 4.9 million copies, thrusting the band into mainstream popularity. Their breakthrough single, titled ‘Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous’ topped both pop and rock charts around the globe. The album eventually went on to receive triple platinum certification from RIAA and went on to receive the ‘Viewers Choice Award’ at the 2003 VMA’s. Their 2004 album ‘Chronicles of Life and Death’ was considered a departure from the previous two albums, mixing new elements such as lyrical topics into the band’s once youthful sound. The only single from TCOLAD which managed to chart on the U.S. Hot 100 was the hit ‘I Just Wanna Live’. The band’s forth album ‘Good Morning Revival ‘debuted in the top 10 of thirteen countries worldwide including the US, giving the band some of their highest international chart positions thus far, going on to sell 4.5 million copies. Good Charlotte’s fifth album was released on November 2, 2010 with a sound described by vocalist Joel Madden as “a lot like Blink-182”. DJ Hogi
Hu’u | Fri 22 Apr | 11PM Sound Like House (all variants) Hail From Jakarta
Have Been Inspired by the early club scene and days of rave around the San Fransisco Bay area, Anton began DJing and promoting events during his time there from ‘89. His self designed ‘Escape’ parties were held in airplane hangars and mostly illegal warehouses, but were events many waited for. Anton returned to Jakarta in ’94 and a year later decided to start up the unforgettable Future Nights at Parkit, which rebelled against the current night scene of that era. Every Saturday night the dark, smoke and strobe light filled rooms were always packed with people wanting to find something new. Known for his diverse taste in music and ability to mix through different genres or moods, Hogi is an all-in-one package prepared to take on any demanding dance floor. Desyn Masiello SOS Supper Club | Wed 27 April | 9PM Sounds Like House, progressive, techno Hails From London, UK
Has Been Desyn is one of the very few DJs in recent years that has stood out and caught the attention of some of the world’s biggest DJs, with Deep Dish, Sander K and Danny Howells nominating him as their ‘Future DJ Hero’ in DJ Magazine’s Top 100 poll. Desyn has managed to establish his own sound that crosses boundaries and makes any categorizing difficult, incorporating house classics, deep, tech, funky and progressive sounds in his sets. Desyn’s love of house music began in 1989, when he was exposed to the acid house movement at the age of 16, attending regular events at the legendary Spiral Tribe and Traveler raves around the UK at that time. Having bought his first set of turntables in 1990 he found his true calling in life through music. His DJ career all began with 1 mix CD that he took his time preparing and sent it out to 100 random people that requested the CD from a post he put out onto various Internet message boards. The CD made such an impression that Desyn, although completely unknown at the time began to get international gig requests. In late 2000 Desyn met with Abi Farisi, his current worldwide manager and started a DJ agency called Symphonic in 2001. From there Abi started work on pushing Desyn’s career and in 2002 saw him skyrocket to his current status. In 2006 he decided to take a break from his solo career and joined forces with close friends Omid 16b and Demi to form DJ-Trio of SOS. is Now Taking a break from his collaborative efforts with his fellow DJs, 2011 sees Desyn focusing once again on his solo career. He is DJ-ing individually again and has a new weekly radio show and forthcoming new album release. Acknowledging his worldwide fanbase, Desyn is currently touring the globe and on the 27th of April he will grace the stage at SOS Supper Club for a special late DJ set.

Florian Pagano of Pillage Deja’vu | Fri 29 April | 11PM Sounds Like Electronica, House Hails From France
Has Been Pillage began in 2007 in Toulouse, France, the brainchild of Frederic Saval and Florian Pagano. The two met while at an independent French radio station where they had their own radio show that mixed ghetto hiphop with electroclash and indie rock. Both members of the band had previously done work with house, electro, hip-hop, and drum & bass music, and after a successful gig at a famous French club decided to join forces as ‘Pillage’. With numerous releases, collaborations with famous artists, featured presentations on the radio, in magazines, and even television, the group is progressively building a reputation. Their mastery is the skill of plundering, taking tracks and hacking them into their own creations. Currently, Florian lives in Indonesia, so Pillage is unusual in the fact that they create their music without any personal interaction; everything is done through the Internet. They only meet for live performances, which usually occur at large dance festivals and parties around France. Their first release with Mind Flare Media is set to be a mix of trance-like, grooving tracks hacked from 1980s French pornography, and hard hitting electro. is Now Already living the life in Indonesia, Florian Pagano will be performing at Deja’vu and will give a small sample of the Pillage sound plus a whole lot more. A flurry of great electronic beats are sure to resonate throughout Deja’vu and keep everyone grooving on the dance floor.

Tariq Amawi On the Bali shuffle
Here a rap, there a rap, everywhere a rap, rap. Move it and groove, talk it and soothe it, shake it and rake it, hope you don’t break it. Out of nowhere, suddenly everywhere, Tar Riq, a man on a mission wrapping it all up with sophisticated intelligence. Hey, stop the press folks, there’s a Flamenco Guitarist, and a very good one playing at night spots and hotels as well, here there and everywhere, one extreme to another, could they be one and the same? Text: Salvador Bali. S.B. Curtain time.
T. My name is Tariq Amawi and I go by the stage name Tar Riq because people kept on mispronouncing my name, so I wanted to have a stage name on paper. I’m twenty six years old, born in the Middle East, Jordan, however I shuttled around three continents my whole life, from Jordan to the United Kingdom. When I was six moved to America until I was ten, Houston, Texas, then back to Jordan. Then made the move to Bali.
S.B. That’s quite a game of ping pong; where was the educational background?
T. Education in the United Kingdom, comprehensive school for my GCSE’s, exams, then grammar school, then to the university where I studied 3D animation for three years, completing a masters degree.
beatmag.com 064
S.B Where did the music come into play? So to speak, (Laughter) T. Well I’ve always been into art since I was really, young.
S.B. Were you very young when you were born
T. (Laughter). Yeah, I was the youngest I’ve ever been. (Laughter). When I was in grade one in America I entered a strict art competiton, I was writing poetry from the age of eight and my mother was an English teacher, so I constantly asked her, oh mom what does this word mean? Can you give me another way of saying it? I’m feeling upset or I’m feeling happy, and my vocabulary and my turn of phrase grew immensely, and so when I was fourteen, in Jordan, I entered a national writing competition and I wrote a poem for that
and won first place. At the same time I went to an art exhibition and saw a Flamenco guitarist playing background music, I forgot all about the art which I had been into, and I was transfixed by the way this guy could move his hands on the guitar and the amount of energy and passion he was able to bring out of what looked to me a little wooded instrument. I went up to him and said, teach me how to play like you do. I think I said it with such a glint in my eye that he took me seriously. So he asked me to come to his music shop where he gave me lessons, I managed to have three lessons with him but he had to leave town. I practiced five to nine hours a day for two years, no social life whatsoever. A family friend, Marissa McClain said; “you’re pretty good at this guitar stuff, you should do something with it”. She contacted the Royal College of Music in London and persuaded them to hold an out of season audition for me. Two days later I got a call back saying if I wanted they would be awarding me a full scholarship. So for the next two years under the senior guitarist Charles (Raneviey) I defined my technique ten fold. Then at eighteen I had to make a decision, do I study music or pursue another avenue? I decided digital art was the next frontier for me. I did a masters degree in 3D animation, while playing at weddings and things on the side.
S.B. Where did the rapping come in?
T. Basically from these two extremes, one the guitar, the other poetry. When I won a poetry competition at eighteen it gave me the confidence to pursue that more seriously, but at the age of fourteen, being a pubescent boy trying to fit in and being seen as macho, poetry didn’t seem to be the right fit, so I started to channel it into raps.
S.B. Poetry in motion.
T. Yeah, the poetry started to become kinetic and hugely inspired by Eminem, the way he was able to put the rhymes, not just at the end of the sentence, but how he had lots of interplaying going on, metaphor and word play. It was a new benchmark for me and I would find the hardest tongue twisters I could find, repeating faster and faster until I could say them with ease. So they became professional hobbies, there was no professional aspirations at this point.
S.B. I would imagine you have an edge on the rapping with an academic writing and essays, dissertations and such, plus the musical background, in that sense I would venture to say, you’re pretty much in a class of your own. T. Thank you.
S.B. On that note (Laughter), being twenty six, you’re still a babe in the woods. T. So I’ve heard (Laughter), I keep getting told that.
S.B. You have a great future. Kicking that off, what brought you to Bali and doing it professionally?
T. The last two years have been serendipity upon serendipity, just a sequence of uncanny connections that have put me exactly where I am now, sitting on a degree in masters and 3D animation. So here I am free, no obligations, spoke to some friends and it was suggested to go to Bali. I had a friend here who said it was a very creative community and would have no problem getting along. I had no idea what Bali was. Done, and bought the ticket.
S.B. Sounds like you got the Bali bite (Laughter)
T. For sure, Bali has been instrumental with providing me with opportunities, the clarity of mind and the inner peace to do what I’ve been doing at the level I’m doing it.
S.B. What is you’re philosophy at this point?
T. I don’t want to come off as an ego manic.
S.B. No problem, toot your horn, life’s too short to be thinking small. T. I wanna be the next Eminem. This is my dream in life. I feel at the moment people who do lyrics, known as rappers, are angry or materialistic or negative, they’re preaching the wrong messages. The majority of them, through no fault of their own, and I’m not blaming them for that, coming from difficult backgrounds. The time has come for a new voice, someone who can come from an angle of positiveness and still have sharp, intelligent witty lyrics, but the message is not embittered, positive, uplifting, funny, and comedic.
S.B. What about writing songs and singing?
T. I really enjoy that, I do what I call custom wedding songs. I turn up on the wedding date, no pressure right (laughter) post cards are handed out to all the people having dinner and I ask them, can you please give me two or three bullet points about the couple getting married, inside information, make it funny or gossipy, not incriminating. We don’t want to embarrass them. I leave with the postcards for three hours and come back with a song which I then perform.
S.B. There you go, got to say I like this guy, signed, sealed and delivered. Chow mein, Salvador Bali

An Angel in Prison On the 16th of April there will be a live music mood painting auction exhibition from the Kerobokan prison inmates, renowned artist Nico Vrielink and Theos, The king of action painting. The exhibition will be held at Mannekepis restaurant on Jl. Raya Legian.
S.B. Where did this all begin?
N.V. It all started with Myuran, he is one of the Bali Nine on death row. I received a call asking if I was interested to join a group to lead the art classes, that was six months ago. So with serious lessons we had our own first auction last November, and from thirty five paintings we sold thirty two.
S.B. What price range?
N.V. From Rp. 400,000 - 7,000,000
S.B. Correct me if I’m wrong, your last painting sold for 6000 dollars, so if someone bought one of your paintings at this auction, that would be quite a score? N.V. Well yes, we could start a shop for the prisoners on the outside here. That way there will be a constant flow of money and art, jewelry, T-shirts etcetera.
S.B. How many students are there?
N.V. Fifteen to twenty and they’re very serious
S.B. Reasonable. And what happens with this and showing promise. money? N.V. Buying materials, silver, T-shirts, painting S.B. How do you feel at the end of the day? materials.
S.B. Why did you join this group?
N.V. I think because there was this Indonesian girl doing six years for smoking Marijuana. Coming from Holland, that’s crazy to me.
S.B. How is it dealing with the authorities?
N.V. We have passes, no checking, and we bring the materials, food, and magazines, whatever. Myuran orchestrated the whole thing and he’s very anti drugs, so he has a very clear idea of what he wants people to learn.
N.V. Every time I leave the prison, I had a good day.
S.B. How about the prison authorities, what’s their reaction? N.V. They think it’s great, everybody’s behind it, from the guards to the director of the prison.
S.B .So it’s not as bad as one would think?
N.V. It’s probably the best prison in all of Indonesia, as most of guards are super nice people and really involved with the prisoners, very respectful.
S.B Advice? S.B. On the 16th of April there will be a live N.V. Don’t do it here in Bali (Laughter). If everybody performance at Mannekepis restaurant. How took the time to care about others, it would help a lot of people. does that work? N.V. There will be four prisoners and six guards and the paintings will be up for auction, again. I will be painting with Theos who also teaches at the prison.

Blue Eyes Off the beaten track, but easy to find, this club supplies a variety of entertainment options for all ages and music preferences.
L
ocated en-route to Sanur from Kuta on the By-Pass, Blue Eyes is a venue that focuses on keeping the young and not so young crowd in Bali entertained. Already into its third year, this one stop shop for entertainment has created many unforgettable moments for its patrons, as well as presenting some of the nation’s big name bands and international performers. Spread across a 7000m2 area, the club alone spans 516m2 with a capacity of up to 1000 people, so it’s no wonder many party people flock to this place almost every night. The club area is equipped with a Martin Audio sound system with a capacity of 50,000 watts, dazzling lighting effects and a high technology Pro7 Lazer Magnum System, all working together to create an excellent party atmosphere. A single large scale bar situated on the right side of the stage allows prompt service, and the extensive menu of beverages served up by the well trained bartenders are sure to hit the spot every time. Blue Eyes also has a Café and Karaoke for those seeking an alternative form of entertainment. There are 23 VVIP rooms which are equipped with 42-inch LCD TVs and Martin Audio sound systems as well as a vast song selection aided by a high end computerized system. There are 13 VVIP rooms located on the first floor, and 10 VVIP rooms on the second floor with balconies connecting the karaoke area to the club area. In between performances in the main club area, the Blue Eyes dancers (known as NYPD Blue Dance Angels) and Blue Eyes Sexy Dolls get many of the patrons excited which is no doubt a major factor why so many return time and time again. Definitely a place to check out when you are searching for a little extra action in Bali.

Domestic Fame
Tommy Trisdiarto The Beat catches up with Tommy from Hard Rock Radio. He’s been at the helm of HRRB for longer than we can remember, which is one of the reasons he gets this week’s Domestic Fame... Leading a company with a high level of excellence on this ‘relaxing’ island doesn’t seem easy, how do you do it? I like to think that I’m fearless when it comes to leading a company, but at the end of the day, I always believe in teamwork. My team is my family, and they play a big role in maintaining a high level of excellence at Hard Rock Radio Bali. I think I’m blessed to have the best team on the island. I like to think that I am not only their leader, but also their friend, someone who can be very serious in achieving the company’s goal, but at the same time someone who is approachable for them, so they can discuss things openly with me. Shirley Manson sang ‘The World Is Not Enough’, do you concur? First, I believe Shirley Manson is still the coolest girl on the music scene, and in a weird way, I always think that the world is never enough, especially for people with creative dreams. That’s why I wish we could fly, to be able to further inspire our desire to create. On the ‘Tommy & Riri Show’ you always interview people with various backgrounds. Name three people you admire the most and why? I admire people who have done so much yet are still able to remain humble, and I’ve been fortunate enough to interview them. From Bali, I can say JRX from SiD is one cool dude! I admire him for being totally honest, and able to stand up for people with different backgrounds, and I know how hard it is to be honest. There’s Andrea Hirata, the famous writer of Laskar Pelangi. I believe when you inspire someone, you’ve done good and he has done exactly that with his books. Oh and yes, I will never forget my interview with Kinaryosih. This girl is so humble, and the way she lights up the room hahaha, she was definitely one of my favourites.
beatmag.com 072
Were there any lame ones? Of course hahahaha, but I’ll keep those names confidential. If judgmental listeners say a current hit on the radio is getting overplayed, what would you say? Current hits will always be overplayed, and that’s why a song becomes the most requested and becomes a hit. But I think radios should always have some internal rules to make sure certain songs don’t get repeated in too-short time intervals. Music to Tommy Trisdiarto is... Therapy! I call it music therapy. People find their wisdom in many ways, but I often find mine through music. Music with great beats, music with unbelievable lyrics, ones that just stay both in your mind and heart. In your opinion what makes a good entertainer? Someone who knows how to last forever! You are also a fashion editor and stylist. What crazy idea did you come up with to get the gigs? Fashion editing and styling is something of a hobby of mine and I’ve only done several projects, trying not to over indulge myself by getting too serious in this field. It’s like chocolate for me. I like it but I try not to have too much of it. Shoutout to Beatmag? Thanks for keeping us updated with the kind of info only you know how to deliver! The Beat will always be that cool magazine! Coca-Cola ISC Tour
Adds Mentawai to 2011 Schedule
The Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championship Tour is delighted to announce the addition of the Mentawai Surf Competition 2011 to this year’s ISC Tour calendar. The event will be held from the 22nd-26th of June in North Sipora at the surf breaks known as Telescopes and Ice Land. Initiated and sponsored by the Mentawai Islands Department of Culture, Tourism, Youth and Sports, this will be the first ever 6-star ISC event to be held in the Mentawai Islands, which are known throughout the world as THE Mecca of surfing. Coca-Cola ISC Tour CEO Tipi Jabrik couldn’t be happier with this last minute addition to the 2011 tour season, commenting that: “Every surfer’s dream is to go to the Mentawai Islands, and now we get to bring the best surfers in Indonesia to compete there as part of our Indonesia Surfing Championship circuit. We are all very excited about the event for many reasons, not only for the surfing contest itself but because it is proof of our progress in growing the sport of surfing in Indonesia. The waves of Indonesia are one of the biggest natural resources we have, and it’s rewarding to see that more and more of the provincial governments of Indonesia are beginning to recognize this fact and help us in our efforts.” The 6 star ISC surfing competition will include three divisions, Open, Masters and Womens, with a total prize purse of over Rp 60 million and will
beatmag.com 074
take place over a five day period in order to ensure that the surfers get to compete when the wave conditions are the most optimum. The Mentawai Islands were hit with an earthquake and tsunami back in October of 2010, which although didn’t have a lasting effect on the surfing scene there, it did have a serious effect on thousands of the Mentawai people. The Mentawai Surfing Competition 2011 is part of the provincial government’s efforts to both sustain the growth of surf tourism and to develop the islands for cultural and eco-friendly tourism. According to Ibu Desti, “We are pleased to launch this surfing competition with the help of the ISC, not only to promote surf tourism and to rebuild the image of the area after the earthquake, but also to promote the people of the islands themselves. They are known to be one of the world’s most fascinating and best preserved indigenous cultures, making the Mentawais an exclusively unique travel destination.” So it looks like the ISC surfers and crew will not only be surfing and competing in the world-class waves of the Mentawais, they will also be seeing a new culture, meeting new people, and gaining new and valuable life experiences in this beautiful part of Indonesia. MGMT Congratulations (Remixes) EP For some reason this American neo-psychedelic rock act was highly anticipated when they performed in Jakarta. Probably because many expected amazing on stage visual arts or maybe due to their prominent single ‘Kids’ which still echoes the dance floors. This album is a Remix EP featuring remixes from 3 singles “Siberian Breaks”, “Congratulations” and “Brian Eno.” The mixes were in a very good hands, involving the likes of Erol Alkan the mash-up master, Ed Banger Records, and the experimentalist from Japan, Cornelius. The album is groove-driven with haunting backing-vocals and 80’s sampling as well as some experimental loops.

The Naked and Famous Passive Me, Aggressive You Kiwi synth rockers, The Naked and Famous, are a group of young bloods hailing from New Zealand incorporating heavy doses of alternative into their tracks. With the song ‘Young Blood’ taking them to BBC’s Sound of 2011 nominations, the band is fuelled with so much energy to furnish their artwork. The lyrics are natural and easy and the music is a tad close to what people may refer to as ‘indie’. From shoe-gaze to metal-electric ground stomps this band sounds fresh!

Bistro Batu Kali Jl. Laksmana #55, Seminyak. Tel: 806 0729

New(ish) kid on the block and solid addition to the original ‘Eat Street’ scene, Bistro Batu Kali just goes to show that dining in Seminyak doesn’t have to be a compromise between quality and quantity. At one stage it looked like the unstoppable march of boutiques and villas would squeeze out the good value eateries along Jl. Oberoi, and there would certainly be no room for any more affordable yet quality restaurants. Bistro Batu Kali bucks this trend, presenting unpretentious and well-priced menu options that will more than satisfy both casual visitors and romantic diners alike. The tag line on the menus reads ‘welcoming new and old friends’, and judging by the inviting interior, bustling atmosphere and friendly staff I’d say this is pretty much spot on. The décor is pleasantly uncluttered, and the whole place has a charming ‘unfussy’ feel to it. Choose to dine at any of the simple tables dotted about, or
pull up a high stool at the bar for a more informal experience. The open-ended front looks right onto Jl. Oberoi, and sitting up front looking across the boardwalk terrace provides an excellent spot for people watching. Lunch hours are between 11am and 5pm, ample time to fuel up before a blitz around the boutiques, or a late lunch after a hard day’s window shopping. A selection of salads including the English spinach salad (30k+) and the Thai beef salad (35k+) compliment a luscious lineup of hearty sandwiches and more filling fare. Particular highlights include the chicken parmigiana (37k+) and the baby back pork ribs (69k+). Sliding into dinner time, Batu Kali offers a separate menu with plenty of appetizers, grills, pastas, mains and desserts to choose from. There is also an Indonesian food section, daily specials on the blackboard and a set menu option for just 99k+ that includes three courses. Deciding to perch up at the bar, I kick things off with a light rocket salad with pear and parmesan (35k+), followed by the delicious duck confit with potato gratin, sautéed green beans and orange jus (69k+). My friend and dining companion decides to go for the Australian stuffed tenderloin with pepper, onion and feta cheese (72k+), and I have to say after trading a few bites it’s difficult to pick a winner. On to dessert and being a mango fan I order up the mango pannacotta (25k+) while my friend goes for the triple chocolate cheesecake (25k+). It’s a solid three courses, each dish incredibly good value and with plenty on the plate to silence the rumbling stomach. Bistro Batu Kali is open every day until 11pm, and is a real asset to the food scene in Seminyak – welcome aboard! Dan Ashcroft.

Tahu Petis-CENTRAL JAVA The capital of Central Java, is known for its many unique and delicious culinary delights, some of which were brought over by the Chinese merchants that frequented the shores many years ago. Some of these dishes include lumpia (spring rolls) and fried tofu, but through the years the people have adjusted these Chinese inspired dishes to their liking. One such example is tahu petis, where the common fried tofu is served with a thick black paste made from fermented shrimp. The petis may resemble crude oil, but gives the fried tofu a sweet and savory flavour. Found on street side hawker stalls, the takeaway snack is packed in recycled newspaper resembling a portion of fish and chips. beatmag.com 088

April 21 - May 20
You will be feeling strong and selfassertive, much energy and determination will be devoted to achieving personal goals and ambitions. This may have been an attitude, a relationship or a job. The chance to meet someone more suitable can present itself, but don’t compromise too much. Keep moving forward until you can see where things are headed -- that ought to make it all easier on you. Psychologically and physically you can start to feel stronger and more up to take on life’s challenges and opportunities. Sometimes you are content to avoid the spotlight, quietly going about your business. But now you could realize that you need some appreciation. You will be boosted by relentless vitality and energy and you are likely to be in a positive and fun-loving mood.
All kinds of dilemmas will come clear - that previously you may have turned it into big issues. You may trade acceptance for self belief, switch off negative thoughts and change mindset. Be open to a new way of looking at things. Those with experience display wisdom. This is a good time to take control of your life and show others that you are serious. Your resolve will strengthen and problems will probably bounce off with little emotional worry. Someone or something you have been avoiding can now be tackled with renewed confidence. The planetary patterns help shake you out of complacency and you will feel a sense of excitement. The results of your efforts could come as a surprise and you cannot underestimate what you can make.

June 22 - July 22
July 23 - August 22
Travel plans or a long distance project will power ahead and there will be a decisive development that pushes it forward at a steady rate. Research will be necessary if you want to stay ahead of the game. Do not spread yourself too thin. The call of far fields which looks so green is always strong for you personally and you are always ready to pioneer in any new line or go any new place in search for adventure. This is good time to gamble on your own skills with selfconfidence and parade any unusual ideas for personal satisfaction and sudden financial gains. You owe it to yourself to move with the times, update your look and lifestyle and follow through with what will make you happier, healthier and more at ease.
It is all about action and you ought to make sure that you’re moving ahead of the curve if at all possible. Don’t let the stress get to you because you can piece all the details together later. Throw yourself into it and you’ll begin to feel the acceleration of dedicated movement, the momentum building from entrained energy. If you know you’ve been neglecting your obligations because of what’s been going on now is the time to redress the balance. You will be able to make a positive difference if you only take a small amount of time to act on this now. Your projects progress without any major concerns, and your working methods prove effective. You’re moving slowly but surely towards great success.
Gemini May 21 - June 21 Life is about to take a more practical turn and you will crave peace, harmony and greater productivity. Planets give you greater clarity and allowing you to make plans for the immediate future. You may be drawn towards exotic people or locations, or there will be a sudden desire to broaden your horizons. The planets are trying to teach you lessons about patience, trust and how to shape your own destiny. Basically, the universe is giving you the chance to break out of your rut and learn something new. New panoramas open up and the planets encourage greater participation in life. There is a possibility you will allow someone trustworthy to take the lead or make decisions on your behalf.
Virgo Aug 23 - Sept 22 You are capable of much hard work, concentrating a great deal of energy and drive towards achieving goals and ambitions. Interference will not be tolerated. With some extra enthusiasm, a few cups of coffee, and some positive thinking, you’ll soon complete the tasks that are in front of you. And then you’ll feel great about all that you have accomplished! At work, you might need to stir things up a little bit. Volunteer to take over a new project. Or help someone else figure out the solution to a technical problem. You’ll want to use your imagination to create spontaneous responses. Now is the time to move let nothing get in the way. While it may seem like a whirlwind of activity for a while, the fruits of labor will show themselves soon. Don’t hesitate for a moment to dive right in.

Your outlook may be more philosophical than usual, allowing you to see both sides of an argument. If someone asks for your opinion but blatantly ignores any advice you offer, take a backward step. Action will speak louder than words. If you want to make your intentions clear, lead by example than talking yourself up. The planet helps break down communication barriers and provides you with plenty of insight into those around you. Be levelheaded but brave. Others will be happy to go along with your plans, provided you give some guarantees and avoid asking too many favours. There may be a change of direction for you or you will thrive on a mental or physical challenge.
You’re a natural communicator and possess a powerful energy that makes that quality even stronger. Make sure that you’re speaking with the right person or people and then get at the truth. Your way with words is perfect for expressing yourself, even if you’re not entirely sure what you’ll say until the conversation starts flowing. Things are great and you should find people receptive. You will find that when you connect with others, you are more motivated to make things happen for yourself. When you get the attention that you feel you deserve, your devotion will be strong. This may not seem like the best of advice, but saying an unflinching ‘yes’ to all manner of proposals that come your way, even if some of them are unclear.

Jan 21 - Feb 18
Make a special effort when putting your point across, especially in personal and love relationships, or you are likely to be misunderstood. Also, beware squandering money on unnecessary items, which may seem luxurious now but will be completely useless in. Argument and conflicts may be hard to avoid. However, a solution could be to expend excessive aggression through hard physical work. Beware being accident-prone during this time. Verbal aggression could cause some problems. Feeling somewhat tetchy, fools will not be suffered gladly and anyone who provokes you, or who doesn’t meet your high standards, is likely to be subjected to cutting and sarcastic criticism.
A friend or family member just doesn’t get it. But because of the social circumstance you will simply have to accept awkwardness as part of the deal and say nothing. Don’t limit yourself by thinking narrow-mindedly. Let the electricity lighten up the atmosphere and give your attitude the jolt it needs to get back on target. Be open to new ideas. Look to those people who you gently chime with. If there are others where you’re not always sure of how they feel about you, these ties could cause some angst. Love affairs and creative projects tend to be friction-prone; you may be overly aggressive or premature. Take your risks carefully. Jealousy and possessiveness could cause conflicts in romance at the same time, heightened passions will increase your sex drive.
You would be best to steer clear of hostile people and avoid making provocative comments or digging your heels in. Gather all the facts connected to contracts and agreements before pledging your support, so take time to read the fine prints. There is some tension in the air, and your enthusiasm will only serve to annoy people, rather than charm them as it usually does. There’s no need to pout. This is just a temporary hiccup. Like it or not, you’re going to get teased about something. If you smile and take it, you’ll score major points with the right people, but if you get defensive, you’ll have to make up for it later. Don’t give up if it feels like you’ve come to an impasse on an agreement or plans you had regarding love or cash.
Pisces Feb 19 – March 20 You might be tempted to do one of two things: take your frustrations out on your lover, or bottle them up and cause your friend to worry. Don’t do either. Instead, tell your friend what’s going on, then both of you go to a movie. Money concerns can be had. Easily provoked and in a rather aggressive frame of mind, you will be convinced that the world is against you, and you will be tempted to start a fight at the first opportunity! By doing something new or visiting an exciting place, you’ll soon add zest to your romance. It will make you very impulsive and confrontational Don’t let your passion ride you, or your impulses, unless you want to find yourself all alone in front of your television screen, feeling sorry for yourself.

ow does one define themselves? How do you define a place, a culture? Where is the essence of each thing? How can you feel it? How do you describe it? Is it done through a picture or two? Is it a colour, a smell, a particular situation, a ritual? Leticia Balacek, an Argentinean artist with a background in architecture features her latest artworks in an exhibition at Sika Gallery Ubud titled ‘Textures’. Her contemporary art work consists of mixed media such as collages, large photography prints, installations and short films. The exhibition is about the different perspectives of seeing and feeling the cities, present in her two works, ‘Life is Paradise’ (Bangkok) and ‘Transformation’ (El Tigre, Buenos Aires).

Imago Ludens, The Playful Hermit
B
IASA ArtSpace introduces ‘Imago Ludens’, an exhibition featuring the works of Cahyo Basuki Yopi. By presenting his first solo exhibition BIASA ArtSpace explores the work and research recently undertaken by the youngest generation of Yogyakartabased artists. In Yopi’s visionary universe, an airplane becomes a colourful hobbyhorse, spirals and cylinders develop into imaginary vehicles and fantasy transporters, while a household flat-iron is metamorphosed into a nailed medieval instrument of torture that engages both language and imagination. Thus the artist fabricates his own cabinet of wonders by manufacturing ready-made toys from the assemblage of different elements and materials that include wood, metal, paper, etc. In such a way, Yopi generates an inexhaustible imaginary anthology in which emotions and rationality merge into fantasy objects.

WHOSE CANVAS IS THIS ?
Behind The Lens Name : Vifick Bolang (Syafi’udin ) Born : Malang, 2 June 1983 Contact : vifick_format@yahoo.com syafiphoto.wordpress.com
Concept
Photography to Bolang is another way of seeing the world. Starting with seeing the beauty of things around him, he is able to capture his vision on a two dimensional template and give onlookers an insight to a world not many have seen before. To him photography represents a track record of the sights his eyes have come across and every picture he takes has a tale to tell. In creating his photographic works of art, he tries to interpret the photos into ‘paintings of light’, searching for a different essence or break from the norm. Not always seeking beauty or perfection, but making the final result a form of visually communicating media. Photos are in themselves a form of realist art, but to take a photo which talks to those who see it or gives viewers an idea is what he strives for. He is one of the founders of Bali’s Semut Ireng photography community which regularly holds workshops and photo exhibitions around the island. The group is considered one of Bali’s first

photography communities to intimately work on pinhole camera projects. The sole intention of the community is to bring fresh and colourful photographic works to Bali by experimenting with alternative photographic techniques such as solargraphy, photogram, lumen, scanning photography and many others.
EXHIBITIONS
Bolang has presented his photographic pieces since 2004, with the first being in the exhibition titled ‘Semua Tentang Kita’ held at a little complex near Brantas River, East Java. In 2005 he exhibited his work with the Forum Communication of Photography Students in Malang. In 2009 he also participated in ‘Photography ARTernative’ during the national ARTernative Photo Fest ‘Battle of Harajuku’ in Jakarta. Last year he was responsible for organizing several pinhole camera exhibitions with Semut Ireng around Bali and just recently, in 2011 he exhibited several of his latest works at Bentara Budaya Bali in an exhibition titled ‘Zoom In Bali’ and ‘Infinity Landscape’.

The second leg of Weekend Roadrunner takes off in Surabaya, gathering many ‘fixie’ aficionados from around the city to promote a healthier mode of transport while showing off their creations.
W
ith the ever growing popularity of fixed gear bikes (more commonly known as ‘fixies’) in the past two years, it’s no surprise that the many communities around the nation would find a way to get together and promote their two wheeled passion. The first leg of the nationwide competition took off in Bandung last February with over 500 participants, and the second part of the competition took place on the 3rd of April in Surabaya. The event itself was made possible SUBFGSS and Badger Invaders, a well known fashion retailer. With a smaller crowd compared to in Bandung, there were over 200 cyclists gathered at Badger Invaders, Surabaya. Amongst the many competitions dreamt up by SUBFGSS was a check point race called ‘Alley Cat’, a trackstand competition where contestants

tried to stand the longest on their bikes without touching the ground, and a trick competition. Several fixie communities such as South Beach Queen (Bandung), Sly Fix (Jakarta), Woof (Jakarta), Cycle Bandidos (Jogyakarta), Fix Ink (Jakarta), Bali Fixie Comm (Bali) and others also participated in the competition bringing the different groups together. After the recent success of the two Weekend Roadrunner events in Bandung and Surabaya, the event will continue to travel through to Jogjakarta and Bali before ending in Jakarta for the final massive fixie gathering. Badger Invaders hope that more and more people will be attracted to each Weekend Roadrunner event, going green and starting cycling for a better and cleaner tomorrow.
