It’s such a beautiful time of year when the wind turns and brings the dry season back in earnest. Still, sunny mornings with enormous blue skies – it’s by far the best time of year to visit this island and we’re glad you could all make it. We hope you enjoy your time while here. In regard to last week’s TB cover with Good Charlotte plonked in the middle, it was ironic that the so-called hard hitting, pop rock band cancelled the gig in Kuta on Good Friday because of a travel warning while teeny bopper sensation Justin Bieber played to a packed house in Jakarta a couple of days later. It appears all the tats and attitude are not much more than smoke and mirrors in the end. The greatest irony was that the night before the cancelled show was to take place in Kuta, Joel Madden, the lead singer of GC, got up on stage singing a song with Justin Bieber in Kuala Lumpur. That left a few people in town scratching their heads. We have a lot of foreign acts on the way to Bali in the next weeks. Incognito at W this Sunday, new UK band HURTS at Hard Rock Café next Sunday, and DJs from all over the planet are gracing our shores. Time to get dressed up and put your dancing shoes on. Speaking of which, we have another story from Rusty Shackleford in this edition spreading his young man’s perspective on the situation around us here in Bali – this week he takes a look at the evolving indie underground (kinda dirty) scene. It may be what some people have been coming to this island in search of since the beginning and it’s making a resurgence. What our VIP Card members have been telling us recently… I like that I can pick up the mag from convenient locations like the Circle K. Also, once I land, I make sure I check it, so I know what’s going on in the week, and I don’t miss any great parties! After a few months away from Bali, it helps me catch up with what’s going on, and keeps me updated on any new restaurants/ good eats that are worth checking out. Its handy size also means that it’s great for bringing around, plus the maps at the back always useful, especially for any Bali newbies. My husband and I have both signed up for The Beat Daily, and we’re now up-todate with the latest happenings in Bali. Through the e-newsletter, we found (to our slight horror and much amusement), that we’d driven merrily (and rather bumpily) through the Ida Bagus Mantra bypass that is supposedly on the verge of collapse. And we’re going to try it again in October, to Amed if it hasn’t given way by then! Mel. [ED. It should be OK. Apparently, the Ida Bagus Mantra Bypass is looking a lot better nowadays.] It’s a great and very informative little mag! I was reading it by the pool most of the day yesterday, so now I’m off to SOS Wednesday night with the girls!!! Jajajaja. There is nothing I dislike about it, also it had a great interview with my good friend Tar Riq.....and my girlfriend on the back page, what more can I say.... great little book. Also I have friends come from oz and I tell them this is your bible to beautiful crazy Bali....... Nina.

Gugun Blues Shelter and Navicula Through to the Finals Local bands Navicula and Gugun Blues Shelter have moved through to the next stage of the Hard Rock Battle of the Bands after being selected in the top ten of Southeast Asia and South America region by the judges. According to the Hard Rock Battle of the Bands website; “The battles were fierce. Hundreds of bands entered Hard Rock’s Battle of the Bands at participating Hard Rock Cafes all over the world. Now it’s up to you. Each region has been narrowed down. This year we are sending four bands to Hard Rock Calling. Take a look at the videos, pick your favourite in each region, cast your votes and help decide which four bands are heading out on the tour of a lifetime.” There are four regions around the world and ten bands selected for each region. The top one from each region will play in London at the Hard Rock Calling Festival later this year. View the videos of each band on the website and choose who you think is the best. Now, we’re not saying you have to choose local boys Navicula or Gugen Blues Shelter, but why not give the guys a chance? We reckon they’re good enough to go all the way. www.hardrockbattleofthebands.com

Scoop Let’s Green Indonesia Greeneration Indonesia (GI) is a organisation that promotes environmentally-friendly ideals and has initiated a campaign program named ‘Diet Kantong Plastik’ that was launched last year in Bandung. This program is concerned with the excessive use of plastic bags around us that endanger the environment and aims to encourage the wiser use of plastic bags by involving consumers, retailers, communities and organizations in the cause. In 2010, GI began working with retail company Circle K Indonesia (CK). CK has more than 300 outlets in six major cities in Indonesia, and the concept of Diet Kantong Plastik is to educate consumers by active and voluntary participation. The program encourages the use of alternative reusable shopping bags (named ‘baGoes bags’) available at CK stores, and charging a donation for plastic bag use in the store, creating a sense of responsibility in the consumers themselves. The donations are being used to fund the post-program of Diet Kantong Plastik named ‘Clean Up Your City’ (CUYC). CUYC is a program where GI and the community come together to clean up their city. The CUYC campaigns are planned to be held in Jakarta, Bogor, Bali, Yogyakarta and Surabaya. The pilot project for CUYC 2011 was conducted in Bogor on 5th February 2011. The next CUYC will be held at Kuta or Double Six Beach (still unconfirmed which as we got to press) on 30th April. The government representatives and local communities are expected to work together and contribute actively for this event. Date: Saturday 30 April 2011 Time: 7am to 11am Location: Subdistrict of Kuta (Legian/Double six Beach) - Kabupaten Badung

Mat Zo Klapa Klab | Sat 30 Apr | 9PM Sounds Like House, progressive, trance Hails From London, UK
Has Been DJ Matan Zohar, or Mat Zo as he is known to his fans, was born into a artistically gifted family. His mother, an accomplished professional violinist, and his father, a famous oil painter and music lover, immersed Matan into a world of music from an early age. By age 8, precocious Matan was already so much inspired by music that he taught himself the guitar, and decided to start a band. After moving from the USA back to his birthplace, at age 11, Matan soon became a drummer in a jazz band, and bassist in a rock band, but after listening to such dance music artists as Daft Punk and the Chemical Brothers, their primal rhythms combined with cutting edge melodies moved him to a turning point in his career. He taught himself to produce dance music at 13 years old, and by 16, taught himself to DJ. By 2006, when he was only 16 years old, Matan had his first signing of a track, but it was after he won the Baroque Remix Competition with Lustral’s “In My Life” that many world-class DJs and producers began to take notice. Mat Zo quickly worked his way up the ranks and has played in such places as Holland, Germany, Ukraine, Ibiza, India, and various cities in England. His global reach multiplied when his ‘Zoned’ monthly radio program was picked up by Afterhours.fm in the summer of 2008. He has numerous releases out on such labels as Intuition, Armada, and Anjunabeats, and continues to produce varied electronic music, ranging from drum and bass, to trance and progressive house. is Now Currently ranking in at #66 on DJ Mag’s list of world DJs, he has achieved so much at his young age. Set for his Bali debut at Klapa Klab at the end of April. Be sure not miss this aspiring world class DJ when he hits the decks and rises to the occasion.

Hurts Hard Rock Cafe | Sun 8 May | 9PM Sound Like 80’s inspired synthpop Hail From Manchester, UK
Have Been Hurts are a British synthpop duo from Manchester formed by Theo Hutchcraft and synthesizer player Adam Anderson. With their signature sharp suits, slick hair and stark visuals, the two look like they should be on the cover of Vogue Homme more than NME or Smash Hits. Before Hurts, they were part of a band named Bureau which later changed its name to Dagger. However, on a trip to Italy, Theo and Adam discovered “disco-lento” (slow disco). Figuring two was enough to create that kind of music and ditching the rest of the band, the duo’s debut single last year ‘Better than Life’ became a slow moving hit, presenting a sound many thought was lost to the 80’s. Their look and elegant style is oily slick and something not seen since the days of Tears for Fears. Musically, they construct melancholic 1980sinspired electro-pop with songs that they say are inspired by the British mentality of being “not too bad”. “How are you doing? Not too bad. For a while you think that’s not very interesting,” Theo once said. “But it can be very interesting because it’s on a knife-edge of hope and despair.” Their second single “Wonderful Life” had them featured as ‘Band Of The Day’ on guardian.co.uk. Their debut album titled ‘Happiness’ went gold in the UK and finished in fourth position in BBC’s Sound of 2010 polls and also went gold in Austria and platinum in Germany and Poland. A duo with Kylie Minogue on a track from the album, ‘Devotion’ also caused a bit of a stir on the radio as a connection with the Aussie pop queen never did anyone any harm. are Now Having appeared at such events as Isle of Wight Festival, Glastonbury Festival, T in the Park, Latitude Festival and V Festival, the band is currently touring through Asia to promote their debut album. After KL and Jakarta, it will be our turn with Hurts performing at Hard Rock Café Bali on the 8th of May.

The Rebirth of the Indie Party If
By Rusty Shackleford
you’ve been paying any attention to the news or the plethora of blogs about Bali, there’s a lot of talk these days about how the island has lost its way. It reflects a certain attitude among the visitors and locals alike that perhaps the rush to build things that are bigger and cater to the wealthy elite is perhaps ruining a place that built its reputation as a beautiful carefree hangout. Everything is trending towards this. The nightlife here is no exception. Way back in the day, when hair metal ruled the world of rock and Made’s Warung was the closest thing to authentic Western food you could find on this side of the archipelago, going out in Bali pretty much went along the same lines it did today. Tourists hung out in the imaginary tourist line South of Jalan Melasti (Kuta) and expat hang
beatmag.com 068
outs were found north of this enduring boundary. The expat scene was pretty much a collection of small but lively bars and clubs that very much characterized the hippie roots of the old Bali expats. Flash forward to the time when grunge was pretty much dead and Made’s Warung had a few more competitors, money began to flow into the island and the trend of the nightlife scene here became ever more profitable and with that came bigger and fancier clubs. Just about every club owner sought to make their establishment sleeker and more modern. Thanks to the enormous profits made on charging a lot more for drinks, this seemed the way to go. More operators poured into the island trying to exploit all the economic possibilities, these new arrivals represented a broader cross section of society and
Feature
supplanted the original hippies. For those newly arrived expats, Bali gave them a luxurious lifestyle unaffordable in most countries; their partying habits reflected their newfound socio-economic class and pushed the local nightlife industry further into the realm of yuppie culture. This trend, once a small segment of the party scene in Bali, became the standard. Soon, it was nearly impossible to wear the casual clothes you once wore during the 80s and 90s; you actually had to dress up to go out unless you wanted to fraternize out with bogans and backpackers in Kuta. It seemed as if every club owner north of the tourist line, was making something to specifically market to these people willing to dress up in collared shirts and heels and spend money on drinks with substantial mark ups. Some of these were well financed successes, some were not. It seemed like no matter what kind of budget they had to build a bar or club, they would go for something high end. All these clubs would invariably play the same electro progressive their targeted clientele seemed to not get enough of. The backlash to this wave of high society seeking establishments was a sprinkling of places where just about anybody could dress however they wanted, hang out, drink and try to get lucky. Black Dog and Home had this formula down. It can be argued that other places can easily replicate what Black Dog and Home had; all you need is a cheap place that serves alcohol. But the thing that set Black Dog and Home apart from every other dingy bar was that it was actually cool to go to these places. Plus the music was different. Yes, Home and Black Dog are faded memories now, the victims of the indie roots which spawned them. But the scene continues on, there seems to be a resurgence of this indie phenomenon that emerged in the last two years. A place like the Cave which
beatmag.com 070
tries to break the mold of luxury to make a club so primordial seems to have a healthy following. La Plancha has also become the premiere party spot on some Fridays for those who want a carefree beach party. The Disko Afrika parties are also going strong. On Sundays, they’re regular reggae parties at the Crystal Palace on the beach and Home is coming back with their nomadic Love InTents. These places stress having casual fun over the pretense of smart casual attire and unreasonably expensive cocktails. Sadly, these parties and places don’t promote all that much, so for the hapless newcomer, it’s all a bit hit and miss finding the right place at the right time… So happy hunting folks, the old, casual times are out there somewhere and (here’s a clue) mainly around beach areas. Thankfully, there’s still something for everyone on this island. You have the choice; dress up or dress down as you please - but I’m not so sure it’s a new concept ‘cause it’s always been here.

Coronation of Sumbawa’s 17 Sultan th
The Beat photographer, Vifik Bolang travels to Sumbawa last month to get an inside peek of the rebirth of Sumbawa’s once forgotten sultanate.
The
era of Sumbawa’s Sultanate began back during the end of the animist Dewa Awan Kuning period. With Islam making its way into Sumbawa, the first Sultanate was born in 1648, so beginning the reign of Dewa Mas Pamayam (Mas Cini).
The rightful role of Sumbawa’s 17th Sultan was given to Daeng Moh. Abdurrahman (DMA) Kharuddin, who was given the title ‘Sultan Muhammad Kaharuddin IV’, which continues the reign of his ancestors. After many long years, Sumbawa once again had a Sultan.
Sultans reigned over the land for many years until Sumbawa eventually became a part of Indonesia after independence in 1945. Since then, Sumbawa no longer had a sultanate, yet the people of the region who held firm to their traditional customs requested the return of the sultans, who became known as the White Tigers of Sumbawa. After a lengthy process, the government agreed to once again install a sultan as the guardian of the cultural traditions and customs of Sumbawa’s Tana Samawa people, which happened last month.
The coronation of the new sultan was a three day event, beginning on the 3rd of April, which started with a procession to gather sacred water at four different locations as a requisition for the Basiram (holy cleansing) ritual. The Basiram ritual itself took place the following day at a concealed area outside of the palace and away from prying eyes to keep the ritual sacred. The height of the coronation event was on the 5th of April, which was also the new sultan’s birthday, and began with the sultan being paraded around town in

a royal sedan made in 1932 starting from Istana Bala Kuning to Istana Dalam Loka, the original residence of the sultans of old, constructed back in 1885. The sultan was accompanied by a troop of pike soldiers, palace district chiefs and a crowd of rebana musicians. The coronation itself was held at Nurul Huda Mosque (the palace’s main mosque), lead by H. Zainal Arifin as the mosque’s imam. With the rebirth of the Sumbawa’s sultanate, it is hoped that the newly reigning Sultan Muhammad Kaharuddin IV is able to carry his duties to preserve and promote the Tana Samawa traditions. By maintaining a once forgotten culture, it is also hoped that tourism will flourish in Sumbawa.

Rani Hardjadinata Domestic Fame
This pint-sized lady with a mega presence, no matter where or what stage she is on, is a popular radio announcer, MCs for major shows and can be seen around town as the life of the party. The Beat’s big bad Dedi catches up to find out more. Was it always your plan to pack your things and move to Bali? What’s the whole story? It was only supposed to be three months of duty from Oz Radio Bandung to finish my radio DJ training project in Bali, but the boss offered me to extend for another three months. Since I’d just graduated from university, I thought; why not!? So I took the chance and several months later, I got a golden opportunity to join the surf industry…and that’s pretty much it… long story short. I arrived in Bali with just a small bag of luggage and look at me now! Living in Bali, is it a ‘holiday in hell’, or ‘never ending heavenly holiday’? Living in Bali? I’d have to say everyday is a holiday! Doesn’t matter about the weather, the traffic, the peeps and the loads of other things, Bali is still one of the best holiday destinations! Dude… if you don’t want to get stuck in the traffic just go to Uluwatu. Don’t want cops bugging you, just head to Menjangan Island. Bali is filled with dangerously beautiful places, that’s the beauty of it! Many say that a career in radio is never forever, but you’ve kept at OZ Radio Bali for a while. Is it the passion for your job or your fans that keep you at it? It’s an addiction! I guess it’s both my passion to love and to be loved. After 6 years of job hopping
around Bali, being a radio DJ has become my calling. Many thanks to OZ Radio Bali which has built my career over the years! Ever had any crazy fans? Nope! Poor me! But I love it when I go to new places, and people say; “Your voice is just like Rani Hardjadinata on the radio. You’re her aren’t you?” They even know my full name but have no idea what I look like or what radio I’m from. I call it crazy! From life in radio, to a surf label, then a liquor company, followed by a sunglass brand, how do you feel about your career path so far? It’s an incredible never ending journey! I just do my best and success follows! I’m learning by doing and loving what I do! You’re seen as someone who carries herself lightly, how do you manage to balance yourself? Focus! Work hard and party harder while embracing and cherishing every moment! Living life to the fullest! Spending time in the fashion industry you must have hung out with some cool guys, any love stories? No REAL love story so far! Summer is like the all time season here, so I guess you could say I’ve had tons of summer flings. Hahaha… You name it, from rock stars, pro surfers, famed tattoo artists to triathlon athletes. It may sound exhausting but fun nonetheless. Summer never ends in Bali! Metallica or Lady Gaga? Has anyone heard about IRA? They’re an indie band from Konstanz, the dirty south of Germany. Their sound is influenced by some drops of irony. You were once nominated as ‘Beat Chick’. Can you guess why you won the award? It would have to be because I’m the chick that flows with the beat! Hahaha…I don’t know, you tell me! Shout out to Beatmag: Always keep us updated! Ready to Rumble at Sanur for the Second Stop of the Coca-Cola ISC Tour
usty’s 8th annual Rumble In Da Jungle surfing competition is currently underway at Sanur’s legendary Bangsal Beach over a three week waiting period spanning from April 18th up until May 8th. As the second stop of the 2011 Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championship (ISC) tour, this six-star rated event has a prize pool of Rp55,000,000 up for grabs – but equally important is the opportunity for the surfers to build on their championship points and get a jump on their peers in the rankings. The seething barrels of Sanur Reef will certainly make for a death-or-glory affair for those ready to charge the treacherous inside section, which explodes over a table of razor-sharp fire coral. Contest Director Kane Faint has high hopes for Rusty Indonesia’s premier event. “Although Sanur has a reputation of being notoriously fickle, we have a three-week window
for everything to come together. Last year we scored great waves at both Sanur Reef and our backup location ‘in da jungle’, so fingers crossed this year will be just as insane.” Current ISC ratings leader and Rusty team rider Marlon Gerber is looking forward to putting on a good show for the spectators following his win at the Oakley Pro Canggu last weekend. “Sanur is one of my favourite waves; it’s long, fast, and grows as it hits the reef. There’s opportunities to get barreled and to lay it on rail, so I think it really suits my approach.” Sabre eyewear will also reward the surfer who rides the ‘Best Barrel’ during the event with Rp 2,000,000. The Rusty Rumble In Da Jungle is supported by Sabre, Dakine, Surf Time, Magic Wave, Lines, GUS, and Alam TV. Photo and Text: Tim Hain / ISC

Warisan
Food review
Not many restaurants in Bali can claim to have true heritage, but Kerobokan institution Warisan has been delighting diners for almost 20 years now.
Warisan Jl. Raya Kerobokan #38. Tel: 0361 731175 www.warisanrestaurant.com
beatmag.com 088
After last year’s brief hiatus where the premises underwent a full renovation, the restaurant with the original rice paddy view is back with a new name, ownership, chef, and décor, but with the same quality, peace and tranquility that has made it famous for the last almost 20 years. Upon entering the huge premises located on Jl. Kerobokan, the feeling is less that of walking into a restaurant, and more like a luxury villa. Delightfully and tastefully appointed, three large spaces surround the main dining area featuring areas for furniture (Warisan Living), antiques and a boutique, adding to the homely feel of the place. A central courtyard is flanked on three sides, leaving diners to gaze across the rice fields of Petitenget. Although there has been much development over the years, the view remains fittingly serene and a great accompaniment to the cuisine. A decidedly Mediterranean affair, French chef Vincent (previously of the famed White Box in Phuket) has put together a lunch and dinner menu with something for everyone, from light snacks like salads, soups and carpaccio, to sandwiches and pastas, fine quality steaks to seafood and desserts. It’s simply amazing how, despite the busy road out front, the dining area is so quiet. Something of a sanctuary even, and I order up a fresh lychee and lime granita whilst chilling out on the comfy chairs and enjoying the soft breeze. My friend arrives and follows suit, and we set about
dissecting the menu. Choosing what to have proves to be a tough task – this is one of those menus where everything sounds good – but eventually we manage to decide on a couple of starters. The crispy gyoza stuffed with a fusion of snail and shitake mushroom drizzled with a garlic butter emulsion (65k++) absolutely does not disappoint, with a delicious mix of textures and flavours that doesn’t touch the sides. I take it from the silence across the table that neither does the Jimbaran seafood salad (75k++). On to the mains and it’s even more of a conundrum, so we decide to continue on the seafood route, settling on the crispy barramundi with sautéed spinach and lemon foam porcini saffron cream and polenta (99k++), and the linguine seafood (65k++) respectively. It’s well known that any fish is generally good on Bali, but here the delicate flavours and layered textures work to fantastic effect with the tender fruits de mer. Suitably stuffed, we decide to give ourselves some time to let the mains go down before splitting a chocolate contrast (65k++) for dessert. Made up of a chocolate ganache with cacao sorbet and cacao snow, it’s pure chocolate decadence and finishes off the meal in superb fashion. Warisan is open for lunch and dinner every day except lunch on Sundays. With one of the best culinary experiences going around town, here’s to the next 20 years at this Bali dining institution! Truly Indonesia
Indonesian tastes for a traveller’s appetite…
Satay Madura – Madura Anyone who has traveled to Indonesia will have come across Satay in one form or another. This skewered delicacy originated on the island of Java, and through the years has spread across the nation to become a recognized national dish. One variant of the dish which is synonymous with satay comes from Madura. Made from the usual mutton or chicken meat skewered on a bamboo skewer then grilled on a bed of charcoal, what’s different from traditional satay is the sauce. Instead of using a peanut based gravy, a sweet soya sauce mixed with slices of raw shallots and ‘bird eye’ chilies is poured over the satay. Often eaten either with rice or rice cake, Satay Madura is wonderful spin on a well known dish. beatmag.com 092

Return
By Rie Mandala and I Wayan Andita In the joint exhibition titled ‘Return’ featuring the works of I Wayan Andita (Yanik) of Bali and Rie Mandala of Japan, the two artists share their individual expressions of their respective cultural origins as well as a piece jointly worked on by both. The collaboration began in 2001, and has only been featured to the public this year. Both clearly express their opinions on the meaning of the theme. Rie Mandala’s female sensitivity is seen in her joyous and mystical approach to processing past memories. The approach in her mixed media work ‘Alighting’ is quite unique. Yanik, who is best known for his love of geometric forms composed of intricate geometric motifs, batik patterns and calligraphy, creates in depth harmonious fields of colour using a palette of deep, rich colours that convey the intensity of his feeling as he depicts his Balinese cultural roots. Both Yanik and Rie prefer to work on paper which they describe as having an ancient history in many cultures. The Adventure of My Soul By NI NYOMAN SANI Many Balinese artists retain their loyalty to a chosen form of art and never stray from it, but for Nyoman Sani it’s the complete opposite. This female artist, born in Sanur 36 years ago has spent almost half her life pursuing the arts, mastering the ability to express herself through different forms of media. Not only creating two dimensional works of art, she has also tried her hand at photography, clothing designs and even performing arts. In almost every exhibition, especially her most recent ones, this graduate of ISI Denpasar explores the world of the female psyche. On the canvas she presents a female image which is feminine and stylish, yet implies a spirit attempting to break free from the bondage of patriarchy. Sani represents a different side of Balinese women today who struggle against global and local values. In her solo exhibition titled ‘The Adventure of My Soul’ (Petulangan Jiwaku) she presents her latest variety of art works from paintings, photos, poetry and performance art as well as a fashion show.

THE WORLD IS MY STAGE
Putu Satria Kusuma Born : Singaraja, 28 March 1963 Contact : p.satriakusuma@yahoo.com
Concept
With the noble intention of exposing Village Theater, Putu Satria embraces variety and simplicity whilst maintaining the integrity of the art. Very different from realist theatre, the concept of his kampung theatre incorporates the local villagers participating in his performances. In his eyes, anybody from any background is able to get involved in theatrical arts. The themes that Putu often composes are that of local folklore as well as stories inspired by contemporary events containing certain social critiques intended to voice the villager’s ideas. One example of his work is his script titled ‘Cupak Tanah’ which tells the tale of a character named Cupak who enjoys eating dirt, which symbolizes man’s greed to exploit the earth.

He has also staged a performance titled ‘Jaya Prana – Layon Sari’, which he wrote himself and featured at Pesta Kesenian Bali and Gedung Kesenian Jakarta in 2008. Apart from taking to the stage, Putu Satria is also an active script writer, short story writer, screen play writer and much more.
