We would like to congratulate Gugun Blues Shelter from Jakarta for winning the worldwide Hard Rock Battle of the Bands competition that was finalised by social media voting and announced on the Hard Rock website last weekend. Apparently, it was a land-side win for Gugun, with second place far behind, which may show the pure voting power of Indonesian kids more than anything, but Gugun, who we saw live at Hard Rock Cafe Bali last week is probably one of the best guitarists on the planet and sure to knock the socks off all at the Hard Rock Calling event in London in June with his blistering guitar riffs and solos. Gugun will be sharing the main stage with the likes of Bon Jovi, Rod Stewart, Stevie Nicks, The Killers and many more. Good luck to him and the band. Meanwhile, here the party doesn’t stop. Besides all the usual crop of international and national DJs and bands coming to play, next week we have a rather special event coming our way. The Sydney FlickerFest will be showing the best short films from around the world on a big screen at Potato Head Beach Club in Petitenget. Not to be missed by all film buffs around town. Next Weds and Thurs May 25 and 26. Here are more TB VIP Member comments when we ask what they like and dislike about the beat: Well, what I like about The Beat magazine is that’s its very informative concerning music and night live entertainment, also good is to have many complete addresses of restaurants, Bali shops, live music events and the regular events etc... What we can’t find in this is the Numerology Tarot reader Erna Twechuizen, haha... What I don’t like in the beat is there’s too many music events...because I’m not a night person, so maybe some other info must be great too, like exhibitions or other events in Bali. The most I like is the daily beat, which gives people every day some insights into what is going on in Bali in big lines with which people can react. With my most warm regards, Erna. (Subscribe to the TBD via beatmag.com) From this beat magazine, I can know something different about Bali. Something that I didn’t know before. And I think this magazine is useful and wonderful....I like the beat magazine. And I don’t like if I am looking for this magazine and I can’t get it b’coz it has run out. I think beat magazine is a very limited book. I hope beat magazine can add the quantity of book. Thank you very much...God bless. Mayke. (Hmmm, we do have subscriptions, Mayke. The musical event itself is meant as a tribute to the late Wayan Sadra, a well known Balinese composer who recently passed away last month. Mahadewa

Boshe | Thu 19 May | 10PM Sound Like Rock

Hail From Jakarta

Have Been After the departure of Dewa 19 vocalist Once last year, many thought that it was the end for the once legendary Indonesian rock pop band. Yet manager and front man Ahmad Dhani has stated that the band is definitely not over yet, but he is currently busy working on a variety of projects under his Republic Cinta brand name. One such project is Mahadewa, formed by second season Indonesian Idol runner up Judika as the vocalist, guitarist Andra Ramdhan from Dewa 19, bassist Joseph Sudiro and T.R.I.A.D. drummer Ikmal Tobing. Fans of Dewa 19 need not worry as Ahmad Dhani has also stated that even though the new band may perform several Dewa 19 songs this does not mean that the old band is not defunct, and Mahadewa is not a new incarnation of the very popular band. Ahmad Dhani still claims that he hasn’t found his perfect place in this new side project but does get up to play anyway. are Now The band has just recently released a single titled ‘Cinta itu Buta’ and an album is sure to follow soon. The band will be performing several hits from Dewa 19, aided by Dewa 19’s first vocalist Ari Lasso, so you can make up your own mind if they’re another re-hash of the original Dewa or not when they hit the stage at Boshe on the 19th of May.

Has Been With her exotic beauty and sensual physique, it was no surprise Jay Kay began her career in the limelight as a model and showgirl, posing for various male magazines in her home land of Italy. Like many models turned DJ, Jay Kay’s passion for house music came from her endless nights spent clubbing, and backed with her good looks was easily able to find several DJs to teach her a thing or two about mixing music. From there her desire to control the beat grew even more and the boutique she owned began to sell CDs and other DJ needs as well as clothing. Eventually buying her own DJ console, Jay Kay spent many hours perfecting her style, and came up with the idea to bring her show girl background to the decks when she took to the stage. Needless to say, she leaves the crowd in awe wherever she spins her beats. is Now Catch this simmering DJ when she takes to the stage of Blue Eyes to end the month of May in alluring style. Dash Berlin Double Six | Sat 28 may | 11PM Sounds Like Experimental progressive and trance Hails From The Hague, Netherlands

Has Been Dash Berlin is a true DJ at heart, with a profound passion for the comprehensive culture of dance music one could easily mistake him for a superstar DJ. However, the truth remains that Dash Berlin views the world through the same eyes as his public. He was born as Jeff Sutorius, to a family with a wide musical taste that surrounded him since childhood with great music and thanks to his late father, who was a distinguished drummer in a jazz band, Dash became acquainted with the typical marks of rhythmic music. While still at high school, he became a devoted fan of electronic music, regularly enjoying mix tapes that his older sister brought home from the clubs she worked at as a professional dancer. Inspired by pioneering figures such as; Sven Väth, Oliver Lieb and Sander Kleinenberg, he slowly but surely started to develop his own innovative style of mixing and producing. Propelled by his passion, he literally performed everywhere, from nine-hour long gigs in shopping malls to the notorious illegal Dutch warehouse rave parties. During his set on the world famous Love Parade, Dash decided to incorporate the word ‘Berlin’ as his artist name, as an ode to a metropolis and an engaging, urban landscape. In early 2006, he teamed up with fellow producers and close friends, Molijn and Kalberg to design an ambitious and unprecedented new sound of trance, quickly labeled as the “Dash Berlin Sound”. A year later Armin van Buuren revealed this newfound discovery to the world and featured Dash Berlin’s debut record ‘Till the Sky Falls Down’ on his legendary ‘Universal Religion’ album. The track became one of the most memorable, global anthems that year. is Now After releasing his latest single ‘Disarm Yourself’ earlier this year, Dash has also been busy spreading his music to every corner of the globe. After his highly anticipated performance in Jakarta, he’ll be making his way to Bali to perform at Double Six Club for a collaborative event with Kampus and Stadium Jakarta titled ‘Class of 2011’. Get ready to get your socks knocked off by Dash’s Dutch trance beats.

Hurts So Good

T

he British synthpop band Hurts took to the stage at Hard Rock Cafe as part of their Asian tour. Space was hard to find as the foreign and local crowd were hypnotized by the duo’s performance as they performed their 80’s inspired sounds for the full house. The great voice of singer Theo Hutchcraft was only outshone a couple times by the mysterious tenor in the background, who dropped in some almost operatic moments and the stage lighting and sound was a credit to all involved.

One of Indonesia’s top notch surfers, recently crowned as a surf champion in Thailand, winner of the Japan CHP international challenge, official rider for Quiksilver, Coca-Cola, Power Balance, a TV commercial star, and now CEO of the ISC (Indonesian Surfing Championshops). This remarkable yet humble go-getter talked to the Beat’s big daddy, Dedi about the way it is. You’re in Jakarta right now, is it a surf, style or business trip? g I’m here to visit my sister, and also to come to my cousin’s wedding. Usually I don’t really like coming to Jakarta unless it’s something urgent like playing golf with Quiksilver or Coca-Cola. You have won a lot of titles in surfing and scored some amazing endorsements, how do these achievements impact on you personally, and what do have to say to all the aspiring riders out there? g I’m sure I’m still the same person, those things don’t make me change into someone I’m not. I’m really thankful that my sponsors have been really supportive with my career. I would love to see all those surfers around Indonesia having a good time in their backyards, because Indonesia is full of perfect waves, that’s what I want them to do. You are now busy with the ISC tour, going from west Sumatra to the far Timor Islands. If you can sum up in one sentence, what’s the vision of the championship? g The Coca-Cola ISC pro tour has been getting really great media coverage and also government support. Our aim is to spread the sport all over Indonesia and the future vision is to help bring Indonesian surfers onto the World Tour. Now we have Dede Suryana enjoying great success on the CC-ISC tour. He’s the 2008 champ and I hope many more follow his path.

You have a deep mission for beach cleaning backed up by Coca Cola. How contaminated are our beaches? g I’m the ambassador for the Corporate Social Responsibility program of Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia, also partnered with the Quiksilver Foundation. I’ve been really busy working together with the team making sure that we have a better environment, especially on the beaches of Bali. The results have been really significant, more trash is being removed from the beaches in Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Jimbaran and Kedonganan. I would like to have everybody on this island aware of this environmental problem that we are facing, this is not only the responsibility of big companies but all of us. Is your real name Tipi Jabrik in your ID? g No, Tip Jabrik Noventin. Who do you listen to (on your iPod in the car) before or after you hit the waves? g The new single from The SIGIT, The Cure, The Gotham. Favourite local surfers? g Wayan Betet Merta, Made Kasim. Who will be the bomb (talented potential) surfer in next 5 years? g Jeren Kiring from Lombok. Shout out to Beatmag: g The best mag to get updated!! Interview by Dedi Kristian

Wiz Khalifa Rolling Papers C

elebrated to almost the point of overexposure, Wiz Khalifa is more of a tour de force personality than actually lyrically talented. ‘Black & Yellow’ and ‘The Race’ are quite clearly the standout tracks; the rest is just me-myself-and-I background party music filler. Dirty south crispy sounds, Drakelike rhymes are the standard flow, but a sparkling production just about saves him from looking too dull. More vocal skills and deeper wisdom from Wiz would make the album prettier for all ears. DK

Radiohead The King Of Limbs T

he 8th studio album from Radiohead seems to tread a fine line between the experimentation of Kid A and the newfound warmth of In Rainbows. Opener ‘Bloom’ sounds like it may fall apart at any moment were it not for Colin Greenwood’s advancing bassline. The tempo remains firmly set to ‘jittery’ for the next few tracks until the piano driven ‘Codex’ kicks off what could quite possibly be the most achingly beautiful 15 minutes and 12 seconds of music Radiohead have produced to date. An undeniably fascinating album that once again confirms that the boys from Oxford simply will not settle for ‘comfortable’. DA

Raditya “the Bull” Rondi Takes Down Pepen “the Tiger” Hendrik for the Win R

aditya Rondi bested last year’s Rumble in Da Jungle winner Pepen Hendrik today in a 30 minute man-on-man battle in testing 5-6 foot wave conditions to claim victory and the additional distinction of being the first goofy footer to ever win the legendary event. The stylish and aggressive goofy footer from Kuta nicknamed “the Bull” takes home a winner’s check for Rp15million and 3,000 Coca-Cola ISC Championship points, and now sits in second spot in the 2011 rankings, having finished equal third in the first event on the Coca-Cola ISC Tour in April. This was the third and final day of competition at the 2011 Rusty Rumble in Da Jungle, the first day having been held at Bangsal Beach in Sanur Reef on April 27th with a trial heat and Rounds 1 through 3, then Round 4 was completed at “Da Jungle” on April 30, and on May 3 the quarterfinals through finals were run once again at “Da Jungle.” Though the wave conditions were challenging, almost maxing out the capability of “Da Jungle” to handle them, and torrential rain was pouring down for more than an hour mid way through the

morning, the Open Division and Masters (over 35 years of age) contestants battled through the pounding waves and inclement weather starting from 7:30 am ‘til the final horn blew at just before 12:30 pm. In the Master’s final, last year’s Rumble runner up and 2010 Coca-Cola ISC Masters champion Ketut Juliarta staged a come-from-behind charge to leapfrog last year’s winner Wayan Budayasa and take the victory, blasting a medium sized set wave apart with a series of searing turns and posting a 7 point score, the highest of the final. He was elated with his win, thanking everyone profusely from the podium while being sprayed with Coca-Cola by his fellow competitors. With a second place finish in the first event and runner up finish the day before, Wayan Budayasa now sits in the number one spot in the 2011 Master’s Division rankings. Food scoop HU’U BAR NEW COCKTAIL Hu’u has always been known for its uniquely styled cocktails, and now they have come up with two more gratifying beverages to sip and enjoy. The first on the list is the Tamarind Martini (Rp108K++) made from Grand Marnier liqueur with a splash of local honey added before it’s shaken with tamarind juice to forge a sour yet refreshing taste. The brown sugar rim on the glass cuts down the sourness of the tamarind but still lets the drink give you that jolt. The second sensational tipple is the XO4 (Rp108K++) which is a citrus inspired concoction, constructed of muddled orange and Italian basil, shaken with Cointreau liqueur and Patron Citronge liqueur then topped with a splash of orange juice. D’BASE Restaurant I’ve always been curious as to why so many places have the d’prefix on their name. A lazy way to imply ‘The’? Something to do with gangsta rap speak? Actually it’s neither of those.

beatmag.com 092

I’m reliably informed by F&B Director of the Breezes Bali Henry Alexie Bloem that it is, in fact, a Balinese thing – and not only that, but apparently I’ve been pronouncing it wrong. Henry should know too - as one of the most respected Balinese chefs around, he is also the head of the Indonesian Chefs Association (ICA). However, to assume that Balinese is the only cuisine on the menu at this new addition to the burgeoning Dhyana Pura (or whatever it’s name is right now) dining scene would be somewhat underestimating the place. ‘Pan Asian’ is the call, and after a quick flick through the menu I see that it’s pretty apt, with hints of Vietnamese, Indonesian, Chinese and Indian found throughout the concise, easily accessible menu. Meaning ‘spice’ in Bahasa Bali, d’Base has been around for only a few months since early this year, but already looks well established. The fun, funky interior and bright, bold décor scream ‘informal’, with the inside area boasting a stage for live music (from 8.30 every night) and a large screen for sports. Up front a row of slightly more intimate tables are set back just off the road, giving the opportunity for some interesting people watching. Having learned my lesson from previous gluttony, I bring along a crack team of eaters tonight to assist. Drinkwise it’s beers all round, and we soon get stuck into the menu with gusto. First up we share out a portion of the chicken martabak with yoghurt, mint and chili honey dip (38k++), as well as a serving of the Indo/Indian shredded chicken, chili lemongrass rolled in warm chappattis (38k++). Really only the pre-starter warm ups, and we’re all

already salivating at the delicious mix of flavours. For the starters proper, we leave Henry to send out his top picks which consist of the Balinese spicy chicken with shrimp paste, kaffir lime in Vietnamese rice paper (38k++), and coconut milk lemongrass salmon broth (40k++). On to the mains and after a lengthy period of consideration we settle for the duck dekil (dirty duck) (50k++), the Chinese influenced crispy pork belly with star anis and sweet soy flavouring (49k++), the crispy soft shell crab with salted egg yolk sauce (50k++), and last, but by no means least d’Base style Balinese chicken (43k++). It’s hard to pick a favourite as food is piled on forks and exchanged around the table so that everyone gets a mouthful of everything, but it seems that the universal consensus favours the special d’Base chicken. Just. Usual dinnertime discourse demands that we have dessert at this point, so not wishing to buck this admirable trend we share out a double portion of the Breezes banana split (32k++), and a serving of the warm chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream (42k++) – perfectly proportioned and a great way to round off a fantastic meal. d’Base is open everyday from 6pm for dinner, and holds a cooking class every Monday and Thursday from 12pm onwards with the main man of Balinese cuisine himself chef Henry. There are also regular drinks promos and even a dedicated kid friendly section of the menu, so what are you waiting for? d’Base has got something for the whole family. Dan Ashcroft. 093 beatmag.com

Truly Indonesia

Indonesian tastes for a traveller’s appetite…

Dendeng Balado – Padang, West Sumatra Many who have tried the Minang Kabau dish known as rendang have become addicted to this thick and spicy meat stew, but not as many know the other spicy delicacy from the same region known as ‘Dendeng Balado’. Balado itself is the name of the sambal used to top the dish, which is made by frying an assortment of mild to spicy red chilies which are then slightly crushed together with lightly fried shallots. The meat used for the dish is sliced as thinly as possible before being deep fried to a crisp. The oily sambal is then poured on top of the crispy meat and like many places around the country is eaten with rice. If you like spicy food this is something you must try at any Padang restaurant. beatmag.com 096

Art FREEDOM OF FEELING Six young artisans showcase their works of art in an exhibition titled ‘Freedom of Feeling’ at Paros Gallery that represents each artist’s youthful and spirited look upon art. Even though the six artists are still green and lack the experience of their older counterparts, their enthusiasm interested Paros Gallery owner Made Kaek to exhibit their pieces. As the title of the exhibition states, each artist was given the freedom to express themselves in an artful manner, in any way they saw fit. Like the old saying goes “If six artists spend a year making art, how can the final result not be art?” Lets just see… Date : 1 - 14 May 2011 Venue : Paros Gallery, Jl. A Donald Friend, Indeed. Museum Pasifika presented five new paintings to invited guests last Sunday at an evening event at their glorious art facility in Nusa Dua. The painters presented were Theo Meier, Charles Sayers and one special, newly acquired Donald Friend piece. The evening and presentation was conducted by Philippe Augier and Georges Breguet in order to unite friends and art lovers, including Andrew Alison, Paul Blake, Joop Ave, Dr J Couteau, S. Neka, diplomats, and a couple of Beat personnel thrown in for good measure among the 60 guests that attended. The final painting was a Donald Friend piece depicting an interior scene with a young Balinese boy playing, which came from a European collector who was a close friend of the artist. All five paintings can be viewed at Museum Pacifica, Nusa Dua.

Oktaravianus was once a nominee for the Tino Sidin National Children Painting held by Rinso back when he was only 10 years old, and was the first place winner for a children’s painting competition at Rejang Lebong, Bengkulu in ‘91. He also was awarded a Radar Bali Art Award in 2008. Expanding his skills further he eventually participated in his first joint exhibition in 2000 at Benteng Vredeburg, Yogyakarta. Amongst his many different exhibitions, some of his most memorable include his joint exhibition with Kelompok Jamur at Tom Silver, Magelang in 2004, Art for Aceh at Taman Budaya Yogyakarta in 2005 and his participation at Bazaar Art Jakarta with Kendra Gallery in 2010.

Born : Curup, 31 October 1980 Contact : ovbakara@yahoo.com

Finding spiritual contentment through painting, Oktaravianus Bakara uses the canvas as a form of self discovery. Never limiting himself to one particular style of art, he believes all artists are free to explore their visual desires and should never be only connected to one particular genre of art. He recognizes that every form of art must express an element of poetic detailing, and many of his works of art incorporate phrases and text from well known literary pieces which coincide with the image he has applied to the canvas. By adding the appropriate words to accompany the figures or symbols he has created, Oktaravianus hopes it further describes the image he has painted as well as further explaining his current emotional state or the world around him at the moment of completing it.

Spa

Murano Spa N

o matter how well you choose to keep yourself healthy, wealthy and wise, you can still find further secrets at Murano Spa. Their raison d’etre is to provide you with a soothing and relaxing place to rejuvenate your mind, body, and soul. In order to provide a tranquil feeling, the spa is located in a quiet, peaceful residential area of Seminyak, away from the crowds. Indulge yourself with a traditional Balinese massage, which offers a relaxing deep tissue massage using sandalwood or frangipani mint oil to relieve pain, tension and improve blood circulation (Rp 80k for an hour). Also available is the green tea massage, which like the traditional massage is later followed by a natural green tea body scrub before being refreshed with a yoghurt and honey moisturizer. To end the treatment, you are immersed in a bath of delicately scented flowers (Rp 150k for 90 minutes). The Javanese lulur/herbal bath incorporates a traditional massage with sandalwood or frangipani mint oil, followed by a turmeric/Javanese lulur scrub to exfoliate the skin leaving it soft and gentle. Yoghurt is then gently applied to the skin before finally immersing the whole body in an exotic flower bath (Rp 150k for 90 minutes).

Istora Senayan Wednesday 27 April

Maroon 5

I

Lagu ‘Misery’ menjadi pembuka dan selebihnya, seluruh hits dimainkan seperti ‘She Will Be Loved’, ‘This Love’ dan masih banyak lagi, sebelum ditutup dengan ‘Sunday Morning’. Semua terpuaskan, baik Maroon 5 maupun penonton yang hadir disitu.

The long awaited Maroon 5 concert finally took place. Even though the heavens greeted the afternoon before the show with a slight downpour, the long line of diehard fans were already lined up anticipating the show the moment the rain stopped. After the doors opened at Istora Senayan, finally at a few minutes past 8pm, Adam, Jesse, Mikey, James, and Matt performed the first song of the evening ‘Misery’ followed by a slew of other hits before ending it all with ‘Sunday Morning’. Another great concert presented by Java Musikindo.
