As the sun beats down on Bali and the weather is now as good as it gets, the incessant building craze to feed the ever growing tourist sector is now reaching larger proportions than ever. Well, in my street, anyway. What was once a cruisy little side street in quiet Oberoi has now become the center of all things construction, seven days a week and right in your face. The local banjar said to one complainant recently in regard to the racket coming from all around them, “When they were building your house, we are sure they made noise too”, which was a pretty good response, but what exactly are they building? Each group of villas, condos, hotels will contain 100’s of people and one has to wonder where is the electricity, water, drainage, roads and all the rest coming from to feed them all. I haven’t got enough of all of the above already at my place. Then there’s all the extra traffic to think about. Ahhhh, when you think about it all, the equation does not add up. We hope someone is thinking about it, though. Get on the beat daily by subscribing via the Beatmag.com website to keep informed as to what is really happening around the island. But as another person once said, it’s better to be living in an action place where everyone wants to be, which creates a dramatic and relentless boom, than some dull environ that nobody is interested in. This week we have a bunch of stuff coming to town. A-Trak and Congorock will be spinning the disks at a big show at Potato Head on June 9, which is sure to be a show not to be missed. Australian Hip Hop guru, DJ Lenium will be hitting the decks at MBarGo June 3 and another Aussie outfit, Danzel Park will be at Nammos Beach on June 3. Swedish DJ Bjorn Niclas will be pumping the Progressive to Double Six Club’s 24th Anniversary on June 11 and Hungarian DJs Myon & Shane 54 will be up at Klapa on the same Saturday night. Indonesian pop band will also be playing live at Boshe on June 1. There’s plenty more on so check the HereNow and What’s On sections inside. It’s getting busier and hotter around town now and June is set to be another humdinger of a month on relentless our march to the High Season, which of course this year will be starting early with Ramadhan taking up the whole of August. New Bali Reef Fish A team of marine biologists from Conservation International made up of what many consider top experts in their respected fields have described eight new species of tropical reef fish and a new species of coral in the waters surrounding Bali. The scientists conducted a survey of 33 diving sites around the island and logged 350 hours of diving. The group categorized the sites as designated marine areas, which should be protected due to the abundance of biodiversity found in those sites. Amongst the newly discovered species, eight of the 952 species have never been found anywhere else in the world. The team was also able to identify 393 coral species and discovered two new corals previously unknown to science. All the new species have yet to be named and have been formally entered into taxonomical records.

Have Been Formed back in 1999 under the guise of Feira, the band breathed new creative life into the local music scene of Jakarta with their lyrically creative pop songs, but never gained the mainstream success they were hoping for. After a change in the line up, they also decided to change their name to something catchier, so members Faank (vocals), Apoy (guitar), Tomi (Drum) and Ovie (keyboard) came up with Wali. Eventually in 2008 the band signed to Nagaswara and released their debut album titled ‘Orang Bilang’ with the hit single ‘Dik’ which was the #1 RBT download for the month of May 2008, with the album going on to go quadruple platinum. Clinging to their success the band released the single ‘Cari Jodoh’ months before the release of their second album, and is considered their biggest hit to date. Never before has a single topped almost every domestic music chart in Indonesia as well as Malaysia. The single was so huge, even kids could be heard singing the song on their way to school. The success of ‘Cari Jodoh’ even reached Europe, getting revamped and translated into English by Italian musician Fabrizio Faniello. Returning to their religious roots, the band released their third album titled ‘Ingat Sholawat’ for the holy month of Ramadhan in 2009. Have Been ‘Barbra Streisand’ made a welcomed return but in a different guise last year as the hottest summer dance track of 2010 released by DJs A-Trak and Armand Van Helden better known as duo Duck Sauce. A-Trak will be here next week. He has been mixing tunes for a long time and at the age of 13 he bought his first turntable and mixer set. Backed with his passion for music he nurtured in his basement, he went on to win a number of world class DJ competitions and forming his own DJ crew, Allies with DJ Craze. Since then he has spread his beats to every corner of the globe. In the late 90’s he ran an indie hip hop label called Audio Research with his brother, who is better known as the mustached half of Chromeo. Running on all cylinders wherever possible, his deck abilities eventually caught the attention of hip hop mogul Kanye West and for over four years now they’ve been working together on and off the stage. Sometime in 2009 A-trak and close friend Nick Catchdubs founded a new record label they dubbed Fool’s Gold, dedicated to bringing the crème de la crop in club music. When signing Armand Van Helden to Fool’s Gold the duo instantly clicked and with their unity, Duck Sauce was born. Explain to us what exactly is Rastafarian and how much does this religion affect reggae music? The movement focuses on excellence which is the movement of the people, and reggae is the music for the people. Many musical scholars say that the founders of reggae music were Bob Marley & The Wailers. Do you consider this a fact, or was reggae music already around before that? Music was always around, but we took it to the next level by creating reggae music, which is the beat of the people, the universal language which carries the message of roots, culture and reality. We didn’t create reggae music; we just brought it to the people. How do you see the current evolution of today’s reggae music? Well, with new electronic inventions in this age that we live in today we had discovered many kinds of music. It’s like a competition between the musical professor and the electronic professor. As long as the music reaches the hearts of the people it is still reggae music. If Bob Marley was still around, do you think he would approve of how much reggae music has changed? As Bob Marley said before, there is no end to this music, it will only continue to grow and get bigger and bigger and peak until it finds it rightful place. So of course he would approve and if he was still around we believe he would still be jamming reggae music for the people. Apart from Bob Marley, you’ve worked with some acclaimed musicians such as Sting, Carlos Santana and many others, especially on your latest album. Who would you say was one of your favourite musicians to work with, other than Bob Marley?

Tom’s occasionally controversial yet good natured material kept the modest crowd laughing, with a few genial heckles thrown in from a couple of the more inebriated onlookers to keep the stand up on his toes. Let’s hope that this monthly event will start to gather more steam and attract larger crowds of comedy lovers from around Bali and beyond.

I’ve been a lifeguard since I was 17 – first as a volunteer and now a captain. It might sound like a hell of a long time but I never really get bored of it.

Ever experienced a critical condition like saving life on the shore? I’ve had many such situations; the last one took place in 2009. I was trying to rescue a man by myself. I did CPR while still in the water and managed to get him to the shore, but sadly, he didn’t make it. Most of the time people overestimate their skills in the water and completely ignore the no swimming signs and our warnings. Other times our equipment fails so we can’t always rely on the machines. Just respect the ocean, man. Tell us something new about The Hydrant Our new album ‘Dirty Thirty’ will launch soon and we’ve been playing a lot in Bali recently promoting the new songs. How good is Indonesia to you? Through this shooting I had the chance to go to so many amazing places I never knew existed in my own country. And that’s what I love about Indonesia – diversity, beauty and lots of hidden gems. How about Bali. How precious is it? Any errors you think we can make right together here? Papeda – Papua Not really known for it’s delicacies, the province of West Papua has little to offer the culinary world, but if you ask any Indonesian about Papua food, they’ll always mention ‘sagu’. Sagu or ‘papeda’ is a common staple for the people from Maluku and, is made from the flour of the sago palm, which is mixed with boiling water to form a glutinous ball that looks more like glue than something someone would eat. Somewhat tasteless, papeda is consumed as a substitute to rice, as rice is often hard to come by in this region. A common accompaniment to papeda is Kohu-Kohu - grilled flaked fish - which is then mixed with grated coconut and an assortment of different local herbs. In conjunction with The Embassy of Mexico and Bali’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the exhibition displays a visual dialogue between both female photographers. Marcela Taboada, from Mexico received a scholarship from the Indonesian Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and for two months traveled through Java, Sumatra and Bali, where she ‘began to photograph with her soul’ the people, culture and traditions, religion, life at home, in the streets and in the towns - all the while learning to capture the real beauty of Indonesia and its people. Desiree Harahap received a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture of Mexico in 2009 and for six months she traveled to several cities in four Mexican states from Mexico City to Oaxaca, Chiapas and Jalisco. The journey opened her eyes to new perspectives about life, and challenged her curiosity and passion to capture the real essence of such a celebrative heritage through her lens. She was overwhelmed by Mexico’s cultural dynamics and uniqueness in each place she visited, and the people she met along the way which can been seen in the images she presents here. Concept

Because of her father’s yoga music school, Maha Bajra Sandhi, Dayu Ani has always seen art as a form of religious devotion. Her spiritual movements learned from cultural dances have opened the eyes of many critics to see that performing arts is closely related to literary texts, and that Balinese art requires a high level of discipline, great determination and hard work. Dayu’s chosen form of art is more than just an aesthetic medium but a lifetime of artistic appreciation. Dayu Ani is not only known as a dancer with the ability to play transgender roles for certain traditional dances, but also a traditional musician and choreographer. In Maha Bajri Sandhi, Dayu Ani is respectfully recognized as a choreographer and actively contributing member rather than just the daughter of the school founder. She has had the chance to collaborate with many famous artists, but remains humble in every aspect, following the ways of Budakeling - better known as Budha Mahayana.

Performances

Since 1991 she has devoted her efforts to Perguruan Yogamusik Maha Bajra Sandhi. Some of her choreographic masterpieces include ‘Tari Panedeng Masa Kartika’, ‘Tari Saraswati Puja’, ‘Tari Legong Lalana Awaduta’ and many other traditionally inspired dances. Through her dancing, Dayu Ani has appeared on many stages around the world and become the cultural ambassador for the Bali recovery program known as ‘Pencitraan Kembali Bali Di Mata Dunia’ which toured to six countries in Europe. In 2010 she collaborated with Cok Sawitri for a dance titled ‘Sunya Nirwana which she performed at last year’s Ubud Writer’s & Reader’s Festival. She is currently busy directing and choreographing a Legong Topeng performance titled ‘Tantri’ for the open stage at Genta Sidhi in Desa Mas, Ubud.
