The High Season is closing fast and Bali is set for another bumper year and one that’s surely going to be bigger than ever. After last year’s experience of Ramadhan beginning half way through August and the lack of the local tourists in town having a weird effect on the month, and mostly in a downward direction, it would be easy to write off August again this year, but maybe not. Speaking about last year with some people involved in the F&B business lately they had a different outlook on it seeing a very foreign effect on their action last August. “We had a crowd of foreigners packing the place every night - total mayhem, through last August,” James Sullivan from Cocoon told the beat recently and added, “that changed as soon as Idul Fitri arrived.” Meanwhile, there are many cheap flights coming from all over the world to Bali right now and more than ever. This should help with the lack of local tourists but also entering the equation this year is the added competition. It’s staggering the amount of new, up-market places that have opened in the last year, and especially in the Petitenget area, which in the end, should have a positive knock-on for you, the punter, as all those places vie for the tourist dollar with bigger and better shows and more attractive prices (perhaps). Like last year though, July looks set to be a large chunk of the High Season this year and we are just about to enter the zone. Get ready folks, the show is about to begin. What our VIP Card members are saying... We love your magazine when we visit Bali because it gives us up-to-date information on a range of things from Restaurants to night clubs, we always get a copy first thing when we arrive. Vicky The Beat magazine really improved lately. I live in Bali since 2000. Now, when I have friends coming over for holidays, or when I wish to know what’s going on for DJ’s sessions, or restaurants and so on...I get your magazine, and everything I wish to know is in it. Also, before the printing was not so great. It has improved also. The negative point...is that it is frequently difficult to find a copy. A year ago, there was a picture of me inside, at an opening...I tried desperately to find the issue as a friend told me I saw me...never could get it... Christine. (Ed.. Subscription is always an option and get TB delivered to your door, or in a fix, check beatmag.com for all the info.) What I like about this magazine is that it’s informative and colorful (you have interesting layout!). Hans

Scoop Brewers Beer Garden Opening Expanding from Denpasar, Brewers Beer Garden will open a new outlet in Legian (1st Circle K opposite Tanaya Bed and Breakfast) on the 1st of July. The Brewers in Legian is said to be very different from that of its original in Denpasar, with a new concept of vintage art and unique twists in using beer. The vintage art concept is clearly seen in the design of the building itself, through to the interior and food choices on offer. The new Brewers Beer Garden will be the first in Indonesia to introduce varieties of beer foods that are as blissful to the palate as the atmosphere of the place. The grand opening ceremony is set to be an epic event showcasing some aspiring indie bands plus a special guest performance by South East Asian Reggae Ambassador, Ras Muhamad. Brewers Beer Garden is inviting all of you to the – Grand Opening Ceremony on the 1st of July starting at 4pm. Cheers & Beers!

Saharadja JP’s WarungClub | Fri 24 Jun | 9PM Sound Like Experimental, fusion, indie Hail From Bali
Have Been Rio Sidik has long been known amongst local music fans for his trumpeting skills and powerful voice, and he has contributed his talents to many international and local bands over the years. He is also known for his many musical projects, with Saharadja being one of his most famous, having played around the world in Europe, China and even Africa. The band itself actually began as a side project for Rio Sidik’s then wife Sally Jo, who is the violinist of the group. Saharadja’s music boasts a fusion of styles that include various ethnic and contemporary sounds, delivered with a soothing blend of acoustic harmony. The band’s music continuously takes you to a variety of pleasurable locations, with each track leading off somewhere usually quite unexpected. An absorbing synchronization of strings, chords, horns, drums and vocals: Saharadja use all their combined talent to create genuine food for the soul. A truly riveting experience in every sense of the word. is Now It’s been a while since Saharadja has been together to perform for their adoring fans due to some internal difficulties. However, it seems that the band have overcome this hurdle and are set to jam once again. All the original members will return for a comeback performance at JP’s Warungclub (one of the places that first brought the band into the spot light) on the 24th of June. If you’re anxious to see what new sounds the band has in store (like us) be sure not to miss the show!

Michael Vagas Deja’vu | Sat 25 June | 11PM Sounds Like Electro, progressive, psychedelic Hails From Lausanne, Switzerland
Has Been The evidently eccentric Vagas describes himself as a ‘tekky electro shaman, sharing new possibilities for being human with a unique style of techno electro psychedelic progressive house set’. His sets are always fresh, original and well thought out, consistently wowing crowds with his technical brilliance, distinctly unique mixing style and energy behind the decks. With the ability to combine electro, tekky and progressive tinged house beats with an uplifting twisted prog mix, it’s no wonder the guy is a nut for all things house. The music Michael Vagas plays depends on where he happens to be booked, so you can never expect to hear the same thing twice, yet his sets tend to be melodic and dance floor friendly proving his passion for the sounds he plays. He has brought his beats to various clubs around Asia, and is currently based in Jakarta where he rocks around the many clubs and events throughout the city. is Now A Bali regular, Michael Vagas has played at several big name venues on the island, and this time he’ll be bringing his tunes to Deja’vu for a night of hard hitting house sets that will blow your personal headphones. If you were wearing headphones. But you won’t be. Unless you want to of course. It’s a free country of course, you can do anything you want.

Eric Larson AKADirty Larson Eikon | wed 29 Jun | 10PM Sounds Like Indie, electro, dance, club Hails From California, USA
Has Been Eric Larson AKA Dirty Larson is the other half of DJ/producing duo Audiokillers. Rising swiftly to astonishing heights on the North American electro circuit, his love for music and nightlife led him to the club and rave scenes of the late 90’s where he quickly found a home promoting nightclub events. After almost a decade behind the scenes he decided he wanted to be on the stage performing for the crowd, so he partnered up with his good friend Chris Paul and they formed Audiokillers in 2009. He’s known for his massive amounts of energy and unique blend of electronic flavour where merely playing a set isn’t good enough. He insists on bringing the crowd somewhere beyond the next state of pure electronic euphoria, so if you’re not dancing he’s not doing his job. He has already performed at some of North America’s top venues and opened for superstar artists such as Steve Aoki, Laidback Luke, Designer Drugs, LA Riots, Felix Cartal, Scotty Boy, Charles Feelgood, Austin Leeds and Harvard Bass just to name a few. Audiokillers ‘Volume’ series mixtapes and hard-hitting debut single ‘Odyssey’ - all available on Beatport - have earned them respect as producers and their fans eagerly wait for more. is Now With his partner in the USA holding it down, Dirty has branched out to travel the world looking to hit up all the top venues. First stop Asia, and he is currently in Bali spinning in every major venue on the island. He’ll be stopping off to get a little dirty on the decks of Eikon on the 29th of June for an all out rave. Don’t miss the show!

The Nextmen Potato Head | Wed 29 Jun | 11PM Sound Like Club, electronica, soul
Hail From London, UK
Have Been The Nextmen are a UK production/songwriting group formed by Dom Search AKA Dominic Betmead and Brad Baloo AKA Brad Ellis. They are known for incorporating hip hop drum sets and electronic basslines into their sound, and have worked with many artists from the UK, US and Jamaica. They have been prolific remixers since 2000 and have been responsible for a string of popular mixtapes. They are perhaps best known for their two-man, four turntable DJ sets, often fronted by an MC (usually MC Wrec, Dynamite MC or Yungun) which include music from all genres and occupy the space between turntablism and club based DJ-ing. Their first album, ‘Amongst the Madness’ was released in 2000 and became a hit on the hip hop scene thanks to the well known MCs from the UK and the US that were featured in it. Three years after the success of their debut, The Nextmen released their sophomore album ‘Get Over It’ which featured American rappers J-Live and Cutty Ranks. The years have seen their sound evolve with the use of more experimental production techniques and live instrumentation which resulted in their third album ‘This Was Supposed to be the Future’. They started producing a monthly Podcast in late 2010, the first of which went straight to No. 1 on the UK iTunes music chart and remains popular until today. are Now Presently the pair are working on Plan B’s forthcoming album ‘The Ballad Of Belmarsh’ (Dom Search), and the debut album for The Milk (Brad Baloo) but they still have found time to party with the clubbers of Bali at Potato Head Beach Club before the end of June. Get ready for some bass thumping RnB beats, mixed in with a few reggae rhythms supplied by this dynamic duo.

Iwan Fals Boshe | Fri 8 Jul | 10PM Sounds Like Acoustic, Comedy, Folk, Country
Hails From Jakarta
Has Been Considered one of Indonesia’s living musical legends, Virgiawan Listanto or better known by his stage name Iwan Fals has won the hearts of the people through his many songs since the late 70’s. Many of his fans call him the voice of the people as his songs speak out to students, workers and the unemployed. He has been a thorn in the side of those who would abuse their power, singing songs about political matters, empathy for the marginal and also of the environment. The harsh criticism in his songs got him in trouble many times during the Soeharto administration as they were considered a threat to national security. Not only a musician, Iwan Fals is also an abstract painter and has even starred in several movies at the turn of the millennium. With numerous accolades under his wing, Iwan Fals continues to create music for the people to this very day. is Now Boshe has been successful with their exclusive live concerts, presenting many of the nation’s big name performers to its stage and now they’ll be presenting the legendary musician Iwan Fals. Get ready to sing along with his many adoring fans as they all converge to see him perform. Oi…Oi…Oi!!!
Anton Riswana 88 | Thu 30 Jun | 11PM Sounds Like Soulful, tech, progressive, trance
Hails From Bali
Has Been Music has always been important to Anton, even from an early age, but he never really got the feel for traditional musical instruments. He finally found his true calling when he heard the sounds of house music for the first time as they resonated from the DJ decks when he first started club hopping. From there he went on to learn the basics of music mixing at IDJ School in Bandung in 2002, and took his first DJ gig in Lampung for the launching of OZ Cruiser in 2003. From there he went on to man the decks at various events around Bandung, Purwakarta, Semarang and eventually Bali. Wanting to be more than just a DJ, Anton went on to learn the ropes of being a remixer and composer at Ableton Livein 2010, and became one of the DJs at OZ Radio Bali while still finding time to perform at various clubs around Bali. is Now Putting his remixing skills to the test, Anton is currently working on some tunes he hopes to release in the not-too-distant future. While we wait for his first debut long player, we can see him perform at 88 club when he gets behind the decks for a night of partying accompanied by a fashion show from LV C&C Models.

FDJ Lady Line Blue Eyes | Sat 2 Jul | 10PM Sounds Like Progressive, house, electro Hails From Bandung
Has Been Born in Bandung, DJ Lady Line began her career in the limelight not as a disc jockey, but as a dangdut singer. Before she found her interest in mixing beats, she was once a Sinetron actress and has even appeared in several TV commercials. She released her first dangdut album titled ‘Tancep Sampai Malam’ (Hit the Gas Until Morning) and was also featured in a compilation album that didn’t hold much evidence of the thumping sounds of Electro dance music to come. She finally learned the tricks of the trade from her husband DJ Toto, who taught her everything she now knows about how to put beats together. Eventually getting the knack of handling hard hitting dance rhythms of the progressive genre, she went on to land gigs in some of Jakarta’s big name clubs like Centro, Heaven, Embrio, Score!, Triple Nine and many others as well spreading her beats to other cities around the nation including Padang, Samarinda, Banjarmasin and Bogor. is Now Returning once again to Blue Eyes, DJ Lady Line will be sharing the decks with DJ Toto Score, and backed by the vocals of Electronic Duo as the night’s Live PA. Don’t miss this multi-talented lady when she blows up at Blue Eyes at the beginning of July.

Satoshi Fumi SOS Supper Club | wed 6 Jul | 10PM Sounds Like Electronica, house, techno Hails From Japan
Has Been In the beginning it started with a collection of synthesizers, which soon grew into a home studio where Satoshi would experiment with his own material. During the mid-1990’s, he grew interested in the Detroit, Chicago and New York house movements. He absorbed and digested the different sounds of electronic music throughout that period, which helped him to shape, develop and influence his own unique style. Satoshi’s production skills have matured quickly, and he has the freedom to create and mix a variety of dance music styles together such as techno, house, click and acid. Satoshi’s big break came up when DC duo Deep Dish picked up his track ‘Protlex’ in 2002 and released it on their Yoshitoshi Recordings under the name Satoshi Fume. The ‘Dub Beatlex’ mix was licensed to Desyn Masiello that year for his Symphonic (DJ Magazine) compilation, and also appeared on Phil K’s Balance 004 (EQ / Stomp) mix. His peers see Satoshi as a prolific producer with the ability to span many musical styles. He possesses a rich imagination, resulting in a strong discography that continues to grow. is Now He may hail from the land of the rising sun but his Detroit and Chicago techno/house inspired hits have taken the world dance scenes by storm, having been featured in numerous compilation albums. He’ll be heading to Bali to take to the stage at SOS Supper Club for a special late night session of techno beats which is sure to keep everyone in the house. Forget about it being a school night and make sure you catch this Japanese DJ rocking the rooftop.

Once again PH was dressed to the nines and looking real good with the stage and rigging set over the pool and an almost full house of tourists, expats and locals in attendance. The music was a great mix of multiple genres, especially A-Trak who went from house to hiphop/urban, pop to rock with even a bit of Roy Orbison getting a moment, and let’s not forget Barbera Streisand! Not alone on the decks, she shared duties with French DJ Pablo Valentino as they took turns entertaining the mainly expat crowd.

S.B. A little history if you please. J.M. I come from the French island of Martinique. My dad was half black and Chinese, age twenty eight and went to Paris at eighteen to study communication and marketing. S.B. What brought you to Bali? J.M. I used to be a surfer when I was a teenager travelling around the world. I stopped surfing and started partying and got into the music scene and the music that was going on I discovered in that era was called the French Touch, this was a big wave, and I fell in love with the music. Eric Satie turned me on. He was the first doing electronic music with sampling and such, so in Paris I started going to these amazing clubs, Manin’s, Rex Club, Le Baron, Follies Pigalle. So I had this dream, doing music in Paris. That was a ten year span, and during that time I found myself deep in the scene. I started to hang out at Razio Nova and started to do record reviews on the radio. I didn’t have much experience or knowledge, but was extremely passionate about it and they liked that, so they kept me on, but now it’s a different story. I ended up working with an events company and there was a big budget and we were organizing the biggest events. I started out as an artist’s assistant and became an artist director doing bookings for DJs. Also we were the first installing the visuals. The money we made from corporate events, we put back into underground events and producing records. So coming from this background I consider myself a soldier for this kind of music. S.B. That’s a mouthful! The question was Bali? (Laughter)? J.M. Working in the party business for those years and being the kid from the Caribbean, along the line I lost touch with myself and surfing started strongly being apparent in my mind, but with the partying scene, I got lost. Then I went to Bali for a month and it all came back, I then came back again and met some amazing people here and started to go over the pro’s and con’s. I felt the expatriate community was a growing market, and that wasn’t being taken care of, so I made the decision to do that. Actually I came to Bali with a much bigger project in mind. I wanted to sell new technology to Asia with websites that I had made. S.B. They say that if you want to make God laugh, tell him you have plans. (Laughter), and now? J.M. Maria Magdalena, which is the new extension of the newly renovated JP’s Warung. What they have done there is exceptional, with state of the art sound system, design and architecture design, it’s a whole new ball game. The atmosphere is great, real
good food, it’s a natural and I’m really proud to be associated with what I know will be a great success. S.B. How have the reviews been so far? J.M. As I expected, from day one, it just got better and better. Last night was a mind blower, packed to the brim with Spirit Catcher, which came from a very demanding music scene. Also it was a charity event for DJ Nina who had a terrible accent on a motrobike. We also introduced a new concept for lighting with nets to produce an awesome lighting effect. So it all makes sense, it’s a party with a purpose. S.B. What were the past reviews like? J.M. It was hard at the beginning, because people really didn’t understand the music. People here come from a background of trance and progressive house, so they don’t really understand the down tempo we listen to in Europe. The thing with the expat community growing, the scene is changing. I had to deal with people who have been living here for ten years, and now I’m dealing with people arriving from New York and Paris, all around. It’s changing super fast and I feel like Bali is like a big city in the sense that it is accelerating so fast. The trend in Paris was big clubs were closing and new small clubs were emerging. It was the end of massive clubbing. People want something unique, they want their own music, their own people around them - gathering of different tribes. This is the trend, and I feel like I’m a time traveller because I know where it’s coming from and I know where it’s going. At least I think I know, (laughter), applying what I did in Paris. S.B. And so far? J.M. So far, so good. S.B. Future plans? J.M. I’m having big acts coming to Maria Magdalena and I want to show more ways to have parties. I want to bring something different to the table where I will try to import all these new ideas coming from New York, Paris, and Tokyo and bring them to Bali. I’m going to try to channelize this energy and love to change the scene a little bit. I think its getting there, and as I said Bali is going super fast, so I want to match the demand and bring quality music. In the end I hope to have my own club with a strong concept which will provide high quality artists with a high quality system for the new people arriving in Bali. S.B. And so, a man with a mission. Get it on, bang a gong. Chow mein, Salvador Bali

Iman
ELECTROFUX (DJ, Producer, Indie Electronic Hero)
A man of high dedication to electronic music, still working the low ground and campaigning for the pride of playing in clubs with artsier crowds, or producing and mixing Dub Step. Over to you, Iman Electrofux... You seem to be addicted to the electronic music movement. Which part of it still keeps you interested? I’m a fan of electronic hardware. From hobby to movement, I never had a dream of being famous. I just wanted to introduce people to that these tools that can help us craft some good music. It all started in 1992, later ELECTROFUX formed in 1997. The spirit is to proceed the passion within this journey so I can see more Indonesian electronic bands or people starting to use electronic hardware like I do. Electronic musicians (especially beat producers) meditate on their sound for days or weeks. Is Iman one of those? Tell us the most unusual production or mixing experience... When I create music it can take weeks, but to get the feel right I can do it in 24 hours. Depends on the mood, like Yacko’s song ‘Jangan Berisik’ (don’t be noisy), I created it in 24 hours and 24 hours more of mixing. For unusual gigs, I played once in front of a warung muslim, just right in front of it. In the

Gilis I played in front of a hotel room with a little bit of Dubstep in it…hahahah. At Batu Karas, me and Rock&Roll Mafia set up our gear and played at the hotel Itu. The owner loved it since we brought entertainment for the guests. In a previous interview a few years ago you mentioned “these tools are my escape”. Tell us how far music can effect your personal psychology. These electronic hardware machines are actually what keep me alive, ‘cause I have nothing but skill, and I don’t really know what other potential I have. I’ve spent hours, days, weeks pushing and controlling these buttons around, so frankly I don’t have time to think much, everything is spontaneous. Every kind of music gives different nuances, rock, funk, breakbeat, drum&bass or even dubstep. From these machines I can reprogram songs I like. About psychology, maybe I’m a lunatic after all! Haha, something in my mindset is not normal, that’s what my friends say. I once had a period of depression. But these machines finally made me a useful person after all.
Feature Specs? MX-1 Electribe Korg (2 unit) Korg Kaos Pad KP3 Korg Analog Modelling Synthesizer Vestax VCI-300 MacBook Pro Behringer mixer 1846 You have played far and wide, any interesting stories? I’ve been playing gigs in Sweden, Thailand, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur. Most memorable is Thailand Koh Pahngan & Kuala Lumpur. Koh Pahngan 96, it happened by coincidence - another DJ from France was supposed to play but since he consumed too many mushrooms he became the crowd, hahaha. So I stepped onto the decks with a cd player and a double tape deck. Funny story is that I had to rewind the tapes with a pencil hahahahahah! But the night was so fun. Kuala Lumpur, has the craziest crowd and I learned lots of Dubstep from there with Ejan & Anowl Gazi (Resistive) & Bud Culture since they sent different Dubstep influences my way. Pushing this far for a career under the name of Electrofux in Bali... Has it been a long holiday or a dragging struggle? Bali is home for me, 10 years and counting now and I’ve fallen in love with the island. I will not move to another place in the world. Once I move, I may be overloaded with party life and such, but this is never for long, I’d miss Bali too much. It’s like a calling from back home. The most beautiful place is when you can have a holiday and work in one place. Here I can spread the music influences. Once I gave some tracks to a Japanese guy, 2 years later he became a famous DJ thanks to my songs. When he came back to Bali and met me, I didn’t even have the songs anymore hahaha! Weird story. Electrofux in five years?
hearted and the next coming year the remix hits no.1 at Radio Paranoia. I’d rather go with the flow aja. If you do good things, you will get a good outcome. You introduced dubstep to the island. What’s next? Heheheh not really, Reno Pratama & Andi Bogel are the ones who introduced it to me first, I just stretched the genre. I was once kicked out from my workplace for playing too much Dubstep, but after two months my remix hit no.1 on the radio and from there on I got sponsored by Obey, Famous Stars & Straps, Vestal, Macbeth, Skull Candy, Potmeetspop, Cotton Colony and Pukulrata Clothing. Touring Asia sponsored by Obey, came from the dubstep… So the next step is to just do what I like and create as many dubstep gigs as I can. But it’s a bit hard since sometimes in a Dubstep gig, chaos happens and club owners are afraid of these demonic troops hahahah. I get emails and messages on Facebook from France, Germany, UK, US etc just asking when is the next gig. Almost five years playing Dubstep and now I can feel the progress. I hope Indonesia will accept Dubstep. Shoutout to Beatmag… Watch out for Radical Regime’s Dubstep gig with ELECTROFUX & JonskeeMC, every Friday at Submerge drum&bass/dubstep gig at Mbargo and be prepared for HeartCandle Bali’s born breed Dubstep producers & Dunie (Oracle Lab) for his Drum&Bass gigs. My new project ‘Le Fux’ with Lucyna Ciaston (Poland),we will be doing live PA/DJ sets of funk & other things. Please keep Bali clean cause its my home, you wouldn’t want me to come and trash your home right?
Interview by : Dedi Kristian
A difficult question since I only can think until tomorrow. I’m not a fan of planning. Depends on the project though, like Yacko’s song ‘Jangan Berisik’ I don’t think of anything but to do the remix full

lready well known for his haunting acoustic ditties and humble, whispered vocals, Scandinavian folky Jose Gonzalez rejoins his old compadres to form Junip. Best described as a fleshing out of his solo efforts, this album rumbles along with not a single track out of place. That’s not to say it’s clichéd or repetitive though, the circular guitars and building layers result in a subtly compelling album that has much to discover beneath its instantly listenable veneer. ust when people finally stop talking about illuminati rappers and singers, here comes another ‘Satan’s Son’ sort of rapper on the rise. Hungry for greatness, this twenty-year-old boy from LA has formulated his intimidating, odd and dark music tomake sure all eyes and limelights are on him. ‘Yonkers’ is a well produced number that goes back to the very definition of rap: rhythm and poetry. The song is a harmony if you like experiments. The whole album is peppered with some subliminal deep vocals, I’m not sure it blends in, but at least the boy is trying to be different from other MCs. Summer Superhero Flicks With the coming of summer, comes a lot of action flicks based on superheroes. Here are some flicks you can enjoy at home if you happen to have missed out on tickets for the latest superhero movies at the theatre.
Spider-man
Stan Lee’s wall crawling friendly neighbor Spider-man, like you’ve never seen him before. Thanks to today’s latest and greatest CGI, Tobey McGuire pulls off some unimaginable and gravity defying feats in this summer blockbuster.
Ironman
Many Marvel fans first complained that Robert Downey Jr. was a bad choice for Tony Stark but he was able to pull off the eccentric millionaire playboy perfectly. Big explosions and outrageous iron suit battles made this a massive blockbuster hit.
Dark Knight
Christian Bale reprises his role as the Batman, continue the prequel story of the caped crusader. This time he battles it out with his arch nemesis The Joker played by Heath Ledger in his last role before his untimely demise.
Superman Returns
Who doesn’t know Superman? This hero of all heroes returns after a long visit to the lost remains of his home planet Krypton to once again become the people’s savior and reclaim his love with Lois Lane all the while his #1 arch nemesis Lex Luthor has an evil plot brewing to bring down our hero. A must see for any Superman fan.
Kick-Ass
He may not have superpowers, amazing gadgets or even a comic about him, but see how Youtube was able to transform a teenage wannabe superhero into a force sought after by the mafia. A humorous yet brutal look at how being a superhero isn’t as easy as it looks.

he millennium may be just a decade old and games are flashier than ever, but some retro gamers of the Atari, NES and coin popping arcade game era (like myself) still crave the excitement, characters and nostalgia of those old games. With the technology of today, these treasured games are returning with more style than we could ever have imagined back in the day, and after many generally unsuccessful attempts at reviving these retro revamps (except Ninja Gaiden of course), here’s my choices of some must own gems from way back when for the next gen.
If you’re a fan of over-the-top gore fest horror flicks, well this is the game for you! Following the story of a young rocker whose girlfriend is kidnapped, you tie a bond, bound in blood with an evil mask and presto! Unspeakable power. You then go on an outrageous rampage with a mission to save the one you love. With insane combos, unthinkable finishing moves and massive boss scenes, this game is a button mashing frenzy of blood and guts. The wise cracks from the evil mask are also a nice touch and add to the dark humour of the game.
Forget about your sissy twilighty vampires, this is a must have game for any Castlevania fan from back in the day. Continuing the never ending saga of the vampire slaying Belmont family, this time you play as Gabriel as he fights Dracula’s legion of darkness and finally put the big guy to rest, so you think. The whip may remind some gamers of God of War’s chained swords, but this thing ain’t your old school 8-bit chain you once played with, this thing is lethal.
When I remember the early 90’s, I reminisce about the times of MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice and the ability to pull off brutal fatalities in Mortal Kombat. Yes MK fans, the game that had our parents flabbergasted at how violent videogames could get has returned to terrorize today’s youth. You can once again administer back breaking moves or burn your foes into a ‘toasty’ crisp and even knock a few heads off in this totally remade fighter. If you thought the original was gory, you ain’t seen nuthin’ yet. Guaranteed to leave your thumbs in blisters.

Lee Wilson Claims Victory in Thrilling Final at Best West Java Surfing Competition In a thrilling climax to the six days of intense surfing at the 6-star Best West Java Surfing Competition presented by Quiksilver, Lee Wilson put on an incredible display of surfing against Pepen Hendrik to claim victory and climb atop the podium to claim his winner’s cheque of Rp 20 million, as well as the Coca-Cola ISC Highest Score Award of Rp 1 million for his 9 point wave during the 35 minute final. Hendrik receives a cheque for Rp 8 million as well as the Power Balance “Power Move” cash prize of Rp 5 million. His runner up finish also puts him into the Number 1 spot in the Coca-Cola ISC Open Division rankings. Wilson was arguably the most consistent performer of the Open Division competition, regularly posting above-average scores during his heats with a combination of critical and high-risk manoeuvres. This was what he needed to do to beat Hendrik, who is without a doubt the most consistent performer on the Coca-Cola Indonesian Championship Tour. Hendrik was also last year’s event runner up and has placed second in each of the Coca-Cola ISC tour events thus far this year. The Open final took place in consistent 3-foot wave conditions and a slight side-shore breeze, with a big crowd gathered on the beach to watch the show. At the beachside winners presentation in the early afternoon, in addition to the Open and Master’s, the Women’s and Longboard Division finalists were also presented with their trophies and awards. Truly Indonesia
Indonesian tastes for a traveller’s appetite…
Serabi Imut – Bandung Connoisseurs of Indonesian food may protest that serabi (or surabi) originates from Solo in Central Java, but the creative foodies of Bandung have put a little twist on this simple circular pancake like dish. The crumpet like discs are made from a mixture of wheat flour and rice flour combined with water and cooked in a circular clay pot. The traditional way of eating serabi is with a thick sweet coconut sauce, but in Bandung, the serabi is topped with an assortment of toppings from cheese, chocolate sprinkles, sausage, and minced meat to grilled corn ears. The sweet and savoury combination may seem odd, but trust us - it works. beatmag.com 090

Looking for a smart yet informal dining spot for when you fancy going a bit Japanese? Recently opened Gion Japanese Resto & CafĂŠ is the place writes Dan Ashcroft. beatmag.com 092
I feel that I’m pretty well qualified to have an opinion on Japanese restaurants since my better half is from the land of the rising sun, and so has dragged me around most of the Japanese eateries in town. Evoking the Kyoto style (I’m reliably informed), the restaurant itself sits upstairs at Gosyen Hotel and definitely gives off that urban cool vibe – like you are back in the big city instead of on a tropical island. Smartly decked out in bold blacks and reds with minimalist lines and traditional stone murals the interior does a good job of making sure you get into the Japanese ambience before perusing the vast menu options. Helpfully numbered for each item, everything you’d expect (and some things you wouldn’t) is featured on the menu, which treads a neat line between traditional and modern.Tempura and sashimi sit alongside fusion rolls and even a few Western offerings like pastas and steaks. Tourist
by I Made Duatmika
I
n this light-hearted exhibition, Balinese artist I Made Duatmika has chosen the theme of the relevance to real life in a major tourist destination. While some may cringe at the ‘tourist’ label, the truth is that the term aptly describes the pastime of most foreigners on the island. In terms of their titles and visual content, Duatmika's works are free of general social or political comment. A talented colourist with a flair for jewel-like asymmetrical compositions, Duatmika's canvases can be compared to stained glass windows. It is clear that his wish is to express his joy and humour through art. While there is a tendency for many to bemoan the negative effects of tourism, there are also many positive effects as well as demonstrated in this exhibition. Date Venue Tel Web Email

THE WORLD IS MY STAGE Concept
Isnah believes that theatre has the ability to train an individual to become more aware of their social surroundings, as well as help develop one’s personality. With theatre, she found a medium to express her inner insanity, which she had locked away inside, afraid of being a social outcast. She is able to articulate herself more freely through her stage performances, trying to project a message to the audience. To Isnah, a successful performance is one that is able make observers understand the message she portrays.
Performance
Isnah first took to the stage in 2003 partaking in a drama titled ‘Caligula’ with Teater Orok which was performed in Malang, Surabaya and Jogjakarta. She also participated in an Indonesian remake of Arthur Miller’s play ‘Death Of A Salesman’ in 2004 with Kelompok 108 at Taman Ismail Marzuki in Jakarta. Other performances Isnah has appeared in include the monologue ‘Wawancara Ecin’ - again with Kelompok 108, and a performance at Teater Bumi titled ‘Kisah dan Lain-lain’. Through her re-enactment of Arthur S Nalan’s monologue titled ‘Masmirah’ she was crowned ‘best actor’ in the first SAWMA (Sastra Welang Monologue Awards) this year.

The night’s opening band was Jibriel, formed by the off spring of God Bless who like their parents was able to rock the crowd. Not long after the kids took to the stage did the parents take their places to rock the crowd and instantly everyone pushed to make their way to the front and see their idols up close. Various hits from the past and several new numbers entertained the crowd as everyone sang along. The moment the song ‘Panggung Sandiwara’ was performed every single person in Hard Rock sang along turning the horde of fans into an abstract rock choir. The night ended in a jam session between God Bless and Jibriel.
