We’re getting close to Ramadan, which starts on August 1st and goes till the end of the month. These coming two weekends are sure to be very busy around Bali as many Indonesian Muslims take advantage of the final weeks before fasting begins and visit our shores. Plus the thousands of foreign tourists in town as the summer months begin in earnest there’s no stopping it. It’s getting difficult to find a seat in a restaurant and the roads are packed, but with all these visitors in town the place is buzzing and there’s plenty on around the traps. The Junction Bali 2011 was a great success last weekend with, according to organisers, over 7000 attendees at the four events. You can see the report of that and the many other events held around town in the last two weeks inside. Also, check the What’s On and HereNow sections inside to see where you should be for a great night out over the next two weeks. Enjoy your next two weeks in paradise, friends. What our VIP Card members are telling the beat. Overall I like the content of the beat magazine. It is really up date about the event in Bali and maybe you can add more about fashion or sophisticated place for hang out in Bali. Meylita Just suggestion for the Beat magazine - make the magazine 2 sides can be open from the back (for night life) and from the other side is for venue to visit 9 recommended place. - schedule for party in venue, make a paper (especially for pictures in venues) tearable (easy to tear) some people might collect these pictures/ of course with the logo of the beat mag. keep rockin bali. kass sudrajat I love, love, love your magazine. I love reading about the new places that have opened up, I’m always up for trying new things and rediscovering old places. I dont think that there is anything negative about the mag. Keep up the great work. De-Anne

DJ Stan The Stones | Sat 23 Jul | 9PM Sounds Like RnB and hip hop

Hails From Jakarta

Has Been DJ Stan’s passion for music began at an early age. Growing up surrounded by an African Dutch community influenced him deeply, and led him to fall in love with hip hop music. After spending the first 16 years of his life in Sydney, Australia and Holland, he returned to Jakarta, where he has lived ever since. Beginning to mix music in early 2000, his popularity quickly grew as he shared his knowledge of beats and rhymes with crowds throughout the capital city. In 2002, he formed the D’Makaveli label with his former manager, gaining much respect from local selectors. After three long years building the D’Makaveli name, Stan departed to create a new label with two friends and Trigger Production was formed. As the CEO/Founder of the new label, Stan has become a pioneer in the event management arena, picking up many young aspiring DJs in the process. As a DJ, Stan has rocked many a stage, being the center of attention at such parties as Godskitchen, Jakarta Movement Festival, Destination One, as well as opening for performers such as Sean Paul and Ja Rule. is Now A big name in the Jakarta music scene, Stan is no stranger to the high-octane crowds of Bali. He’ll be bringing bumping RnB rhythms to the decks of the newly-opened Blue Sapphire Club on the ground floor of The Stones entertainment complex. Kick back, bob your head, and let down your hair as you get on DJ Stan’s beats.

The Virgin Boshe | Fri 5 Aug | 10PM Sound Like Pop Rock

Hail From Jakarta

Have Been The Virgin are the Indonesian duo of vocalist Dara and guitarist Mita. The band is the brainchild of musical mastermind Achmad Dhani, who, in addition to his success with Dewa 19, has backed up big-name performers like Mulan Jamilah and Maha Dewi. The idea for the partnership first came to Dhani when he heard Mita’s self-written demo song ‘Cinta Terlarang,’ and instantly knew he had found a star, taking her under his wing. After seeing Dara’s performance while judging the TV show Mamamia, Dhani fell in love with her voice, promising that he would bring her to the recording studio. The two women were brought together in the studio, their chemistry sparking the duo’s debut single ‘Cinta Terlarang,’ which was unleashed on the public in early 2009, becoming an instant hit. The pair have since released a total of six singles, with an album also currently in the works. are Now The Virgin have gained great success in a short time, thanks to Achmad Dhani’s guidance, and have sold out shows throughout Java and Sumatra. They’ll be making their way to Bali on Friday, August 5th to perform their hits and new tunes.

Neon Trees This alternative quartet from Utah, USA have been making a name for themselves since late 2008 when they opened for the Killers on their us tour and then released the single ‘animals’ off their album ‘habits’ in 2010 that climbed high on the us billboard charts. Members Tyler Glenn, Chris Allen, Branden Campbell and Elaine Bradley will be rocking the stage at Hard Rock Café Bali, but before they got here The Beat had some time to get to know the band a little further…aldi speaks with Tyler Glenn

beatmag.com 056

HereNow

Give the readers a little history lesson about Neon Trees. The band was discovered under a mossy rock surrounded by fabulous looking men and ladies. How would you guys describe your music? Post-punk soul with pop sensibilities. What were your impressions when you made to the #13 spot on the Billboard Hot 100? That we got a lot of listeners! Of course we were totally stoked man. Do you guys have a pre-gig ritual, like a secret handshake or customised high fives? We do a chant from the bridge of our song "Love and Affection," and then we actually offer up a prayer. You guys have been the opening act for several bands in the past. Which band or performer was pretty cool to share the stage with and who was the most atrocious?

I’m not a fan of Justin Bieber, but it was funny to hear the band do a cover version for one of his songs. Where did the idea for that come from? Has it done anything to gain you more fans in the tween market? It was pitched by Billboard Magazine to do a song that was far from what we do. Someone mentioned his song, and after a listen we knew it had a classic chord progression like "Stand by Me." So we fused them. I know it seems cool to dis JB, but I think he's a sharp young performer. Hopefully he keeps his head and his heart in the right place as he grows up. From opening band to performing live on television, Neon Trees have made the rise to fame quite quickly. What would you say is the biggest factor that has helped the band reach its current success so rapidly? Having a song and album that can speak for themselves. If you don't have a tune, then it can come off as hyperbole in the media. We are real musicians who can play live as well. Is this the band’s first time to Bali?

My Chemical Romance are amazing people and performers. We loved being with them. As for the atrocious, we never kiss and tell.

Yes indeed, and we are very excited.

If you could perform a concert with your music idols, who would be in it and what songs would you like them to play?

Well-dressed and well-behaved, we hope…

Neil Young, and he'd play "Rockin’ in the Free World" with us, or us with him, rather. "Suedehead" with Morrissey would be fun.

What do you expect the crowd to be like here?

How do you expect the reception to be when you get to Bali? We’re looking forward to meeting some great people. We’re flattered to be able to travel the world and play our music.

After participating in the massive Java Rockin Land Festival in Jakarta, the boys of Neo Trees will be taking to the stage at Hard Rock Hotel on the 29th of July. Prepare yourselves for a rocking good show!

Punks Jump Up SOS Supper Club | Wed 3 Aug |10PM Sound Like Dutch pop, K-pop, Spanish pop Hail From UK

Have Been Punks Jump Up came together in London as a mere accident a few years back. Joe, a born and bred Londoner and David, a Swede just off the boat, had bumped into each other on several occasions, mostly having to do with music, style, visual arts. They quickly noticed their shared background in punk, dance music, street art, fashion, and style, as well as their DIY ethos. Eager to get their share of the creative chaos that is East London, they began putting on their own parties for the loonies. This led to beautiful friendships with a lot of local music and art eccentrics and eventually to setting up their own label, Cassette Records, to vent their creativity. The first Punks Jump Up EP – ‘Be You (Beep Beep)’ created a minor storm on the DIY dance scene in London and beyond, getting played by lords of dance James Murphy and Erol Alkan. The tracks from the EP also got represented on BBC1, with presenters Annie Mac and Chris Coco playing them to death, all without any promotion or PR by the artists. are Now Punks Jump Up’s new track, ‘Blockhead’ was featured on the new Kitsune Maison vol. 10, the Fireworks Issue, released mid-November 2010, and also came out as a single with remixes at the beginning of 2011. The boys also now have their own t-shirt label, which they’ve dubbed ‘Stiff Couture’ and which, like their music, has been getting lots of love from the fashion industry. The duo is set to freak Bali’s late-night party crew with their unique combination of remixes and tracks, coming as the latest of many international acts featured at SOS Supper Club’s Wednesday Late Night Sessions.

The Junction Last weekend, the seventh edition of The Junction house music festival stormed into town and owned it. The event was held on the high-end strip of Petitenget, with thousands of house aficionados attending. This is how The Beat saw it: Potato Head Friday Night. DJs: Recloose, Flight Facilities, Hogi, Dipha. The venue at Potato Head turned out to be the ideal place for a show of this magnitude. Flight Facility took over the decks, driving a throng of partygoers to give it their all, in an awesome show that kept peaking the crowd and culminated with their hit song, “Crave You.” Potato Head Saturday Afternoon Sunset. DJs: Crazy P, Anton, Flic. After the huge night before, a casual and relaxed atmosphere presided over the venue. It looked like someone had hung their washing out to dry and ice creams were being dished out, with chilled being the operative word. Hu’u Bar Saturday Night. DJs: Hogi, Anton, Frank Roger, Simon Dunmore. Hu’u Bar turned it on again for The Junction, with, as expected, a packed house and great sounds. It was a little claustrophobic on the dance floor for a while, but the overflow quickly spread to the outdoor area, which helped to create a really cool festival vibe. Great set from Dunmore. Woo Bar W Resort Sunday Sunset. DJs: Mamsa, Downey, Charles Webster, Dunmore. Woo Bar was the venue for the come-down After Party, but was pumping all the same, with a large crowd filling the beachside venue. Charles Webster eventually turned up, after missing flights and not arriving for the previous shows. Great tunes and chats with friends were on the menu at this one. The Junction was a great success for the organizers and the punters alike. We hope they stick to the July time-slot, instead of the previous August outings, because Bali and Seminyak needs something like this festival during this month and they just proved that the crowds will come. Bali has been at the forefront of the global electronic music scene for years, and this event, offering quality DJs, music and an spectacular set-up, will help to keep it that way for years to come.

Damon Emanuel

beatmag.com 078

S.B. Show time. D.E. Damon Emanuel, born in New York and raised in California, forty years old. S.B. Background to that scenario. D.E. Living in L.A., working in the field of restaurants, photography, and as a musician. My wife, a model and actress, my two children, girls three and five. We have a pretty fab life. S.B. How long in Bali and why? D.E. Two years now. We actually came here to visit my father, who lives here. I had a business in California, which I was thinking about selling, I decided to sell it. The lifestyle here is just so overwhelmingly lovely and I’m really enjoying it. S.B. How did you start promoting events? D.E. I was at the Hu’u Bar, and Shawn, the owner noticed that I had a big circle of friends and asked me if I would like to put on something, an event, and be part of something at his club, just to see what happens. I dived in and did it and it turned out to be really successful. The event was the Masquerade Ball. It was during the off-season and it was one of the busier nights they had had in a while. I really enjoyed it and so decided to keep going with it. Down the line, two weeks ago during my Splash party at Cocoon, I was approached by Prestige magazine to do their events. I jumped on it. S.B. Stop the music. That’s a whole ‘nother ball game. D.E. Yeah, we actually got an eight-page editorial coming out in the July issue of Prestige magazine. It’s on our life in Bali, on Melissa and myself and D.E. Promotions here in Bali, which is my company. S.B. Would you elaborate a bit more on that? D.E. I had met the editor and chief, Ronald Liem, prior to one of his Prestige events in Jakarta, and when he came here, to the Splash event, he was impressed and asked if I would do events for Prestige. That’s it. S.B. What events have you done here to date? D.E. The last Splash party a couple of weeks ago at Cocoon, the Privilege party at the Woo Bar at the W Hotel, the Voyeur at the SOS Anantara and the Beach Party series on the beach across from the Cocoon, Summer Nights. S.B. Are these ongoing events or one-shot deals? D.E. Ongoing. Everything I do is a series of events. S.B. When we talk about events, correct me if I’m wrong, we’ve got lots of plans for Prestige magazine. Can you lay some of that on us without blowing your cool? D.E. (Laughter) Yeah. This high season I’ve got about twenty parties that I’m doing, and that’s just in the August month.

S.B. What are the themes? D.E. Well, Voyeur is about beautiful girls dancing half-naked, Privilege at the Woo Bar instigates a real New York vibe in Bali, at an exclusive club in such a beautiful venue. Of course, Splash, bikini, hot, having a good time, The beach parties, where it starts at 10pm and goes on until 3pm, bringing in top DJs from all over the world. Actually the parties are based more around the events and the people, not the DJs. When I started, I watched most of the promoters who were just basically bringing DJs into town and trying to pack in as many people as they could, I kind of took a different approach. I care more about the crowd and have a guest list door policy. It’s more about building events, of course the music is important, but it’s not about the music.

Feature

S.B. It’s not about the music. Well that’s a first amongst the competitors. D.E. Who say the opposite. S.B. Exactly, I have heard people ask ‘What’s his background?’, or say ‘He knows nothing about music.’ Personally, I’ve been to some of your events with people that came up to me and said, is that right? Well take a look, what does the crowd tell you? D.E. So along with that, I will have models and celebrities coming in for the high season, and some very special surprises. S.B. Just for the record, you are a musician as well who plays guitar and sang in a band for a number of years. So you do know about music. D.E. Yeah, but my musical tastes are more about the 70s and 80s. There are some DJs I actually get excited about and I don’t even know their names, but I start feeling the music and dancing and I’m happy. Of course I have people around me who know the DJs. You know, in New York or wherever. You look around, you want to talk to people, meet people. The music is the background, and if it’s good, it makes you feel better. S.B. Do you plan on staying here in Bali? D.E. Yes. My wife is happy, the kids are happy, definitely. It’s a home for us, and I get so many interesting offers, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia. So it’s growing and of course with my Rock n’ Roll background, I have incredible connections. Eventually, I’ll be doing concerts and festivals and I think that’s the path and the road that I’ll be on. S.B. There you have it, a very candid, up-front, and honest interview. Bravo. For sure the proof is in the pudding, get it on Damon, and bang a gong, been a pleasure. Chow mein, Salvador Bali

This man is dedicated to turntables, music blends, and industry magic. he’s building an empire, but still finding time to put clubs on blast in Bali and beyond.

domesticFAME You’ve been DJing for some time and have seen some DJs rise and others fall. What keeps you going in the long run? I take this business seriously. I make sure wilmix is who companies look for when they want to take care of entertainment. Our integrity and loyalty mean that organizations trust us to handle the entertainment needs that they don’t have time to think about. Where were you before you decided to spin seriously in Bali, and what made you start to step up on the decks? As a teenager I used to be into clubs, and got interested in becoming a DJ. In 1994 I started studying tourism at BPLP College in Bali. In 1995, I started DJing part time at Hard Rock Cafe Bali, by 1996 I had become the resident DJ for Double Six, and in 2004 I started a residency at Deja’vu Bali. Why did you make Bali your final destination? First of all, because I’m Balinese. Secondly, because many Westerners live in Bali, and Western culture helps DJs make it here. Beyond the many clubs, Westerners need good DJs for weddings, birthdays, cocktail parties, and they like to party. I am happy to have made it in Bali, but I actually don’t see it as a final destination. It’s now more of a home base, as I’m doing more and more outside Bali. What’s your favorite ‘perk’ of being a DJ?

In a profession where big crowds and craziness are your target, where and how do you find peace and silence? I don't like silence, I like crowds, and I find peace in them. I also love to play around with my children, which is very peaceful. We’ve seen so many new DJs come in, move up, and fall off. Can you share 3 mistakes that new DJs often make on the road to success? Well, the first mistake is when they like the style and idea of DJing but not the work involved. A second one is not realizing that work as a DJ is like any other job. You need discipline, the right attitude, loyalty, and integrity. The third is becoming famous too fast! What is Wilmix? Actually the name is from a mixtape I made in 1999. I began running a DJ school in 2000 out of my garage and in 2003, I opened a DJ management business. In 2005 we opened our DJ shop, moving into more serious business. Our concept is that we offer expert DJ technology. In 2010, we started renting out equipment, like mixing equipment, sound systems, and lighting. Who are your freshest talents from the Wilmix stable? DJ Renny, DJ Andre Batz, DJ David, DJ Buce, DJ Wisdy.

On a micro level, it’s free entry anywhere, free drinks, endorsement by big brands, fame, etc. A bigger advantage is that it’s easy to borrow money from banks. They trust me because I’ve been a DJ for so long. (Laughs)

What does the future hold for Wilmix?

Ever play the wrong playlist for a crowd?

Shout out to Beatmag... The magazine ROCKS!

It’s definitely happened, but I don’t let it get to me. It’s human. One thing I’ve learned is don't ever play AFTER famous rock bands. The crowd will not care that you’re there!

WILMIX

If you’re off duty, no DJing at all, do you go to parties?

Wilson

Yes of course, to keep my name out there, and also to check out different party concepts for inspiration.

I want Wilmix to grow not only in the talent arena, but also in rental equipment, which is our newest venture.

By letting their lives influence their music, Marshello (vocals) and Wis (guitar) have set the swing and rock ‘n roll pace for Bali and Indonesia. Going from 2004 to 2011 and still rocking it right, Hydrant are hitting their peak, exercising full control over their grooves, as is clear from their songs ‘Dirty Thirty’ and ‘Wild Wild Boy.’ Wis’s guitar work keeps getting more magical, while the snare drums and the vocals of Mr. Marshello are high-powered. Here’s hoping we’ll be listening to ‘Dirty Forty’ in ten years…

80s Action Flicks

Worthy

Worthless

Worm Fodder

The politically incorrect era of the 80s saw the release of many memorable action movies that make little sense but are a lot of fun to watch. Here’s a few you might want to pop in your player for the sake of nostalgia.

Commando

The flick that solidified the governator’s action star status. The musclebound Arnold Schwarzenegger is a one-man army who sets out to rescue his daughter, a very young Alicia Milano, from a group of mercenaries. Lots of big explosions and one-liners ensue.

Die Hard

Action flicks don’t get any better than this. Big explosions, bullets spraying everywhere, a foul-mouthed protagonist, a sinister baddie, and stupid CIA cronies. This movie has almost every element of a good action flick. No wonder it did great at the box office.

Missing In Action

Whoever says Chuck Norris only stars in budget action movies, prepare for a roundhouse kick to the face from the bearded protagonist! Chuck plays ex-POW Colonel Braddock who is sent back to Vietnam to seek out any forgotten POWs. It’s like Rambo, but with a beard!

Lethal Weapon

The whole interracial good cop/bad cop duo action template was pretty much set up by this movie. Homicide Detective Sergeant Roger Murtaugh is partnered with the young, suicidal Detective Martin Riggs in an unsightly partnership to battle the LA underworld. Filled with laughs and great action scenes.

Rambo: First Blood II

Whoever doesn’t know Rambo must have been living under a rock for the last millennium. This is the pinnacle of action movies, starring Sly Stallone, who reprises his role as the war-torn veteran John Rambo, returning to the jungles of Vietnam to fight the war he once lost.

Food More than a simple Gado Gado

C

hez Gado Gado restaurant, the landmark bistro overlooking Seminyak beach, reopened almost a month ago after a complete six-month renovation. It looks fantastic, with a whole new entrance and enormous Wantilan roofed bar area overlooking the sand and surf. The menu has been tweaked here and there by Dutch chef Quib and his buddies in the kitchen, while having plenty of time to work on it, during the renovation. They are now cooking up some of the best high-end cuisine in town. The expansive decking, for which Gado Gado is so famous, still spreads out towards the beach, but has been raised a little higher, giving diners a splendid view of the beach and ocean. This week, the restaurant has opened for lunch for the first time and, according to Mr. Anom from Gado Gado, the menu is perfectly suited to the location and mood,“It’s a simple and easy lunchtime menu which suits the beachside location,” he told the beat last week. When pressed for timing on the return of the famous Gado Gado breakfast by the beach, he said,“We will open for breakfast but not until August, dear.” Okay, that’s only next week, and we can hardly wait! Make sure to book the new Chez Gado Gado in advance, as it’s already busy every night.

Lilin opens at Potato Head

P

otato Head Beach Club have recently opened their new dining outlet called Lilin, which focuses on authentic Pan Asian cuisine. PHBC owner, Ronald Akili has created an exceptional dining experience with the usual Potato Head flair. There are two basic selections on the menu at Lilin; an enormous selection of Asian Tapas and the second is a live seafood selection. A minimum of four Tapas can be ordered by guests at a charge of 180k to begin your dining and let me assure you all the Tapas we tried on our visit were very tasty. The second part of the dining experience is the tour de force. There’s a multitude of choices in the preparation of the live fish and seafood coming straight out of the aquarium tank alongside the restaurant area. The grilled Lobster, Chinese style Grouper and Curry Crab dishes we chose were out-of-this-world in flavour and obviously, freshness. Overall, the dining at Lilin is excellent. It’s original in concept and authentic in taste, but a word of warning, even with the casual setting, the live seafood isn’t exactly cheap. No need to fret though, like the Tapas, the seafood is best shared and as far as the food quality and presentation go, you will receive satisfaction, guaranteed. 0100 beatmag.com 100

ith its origins in Egypt, the humble yet delicious falafel sandwich has long provided a healthy, light street food option for people on the move. Keeping the fresh but simple idea going is Happy Falafel, a relatively new restaurant on the hustling and bustling Dhyana Pura strip. Located next to many of the pumping night spots in this part of town, the eatery serves up a variety of comfort foods that are ideal for a quick refreshing lunch with family or friends, but just as easily serve as a snack for the late-night boys and girls making their way in and out of the clubs. Happy Falafel’s layout is welcoming and modern, but geared to the quick bite. It’s an ideal place to cool off, have a chat, and do a bit of people-watching. When we arrive, we are greeted by the genial Marco, who gives us a bit of background on the place. He explains the concept: local produce, much of it organic, with everything bought and made fresh each day. The list of offerings is short and sweet, the idea being to do a few things but do them well. The focus is Middle-Eastern, but its not an exclusive one. There are Asian touches

W

hat might look like a set of simple seascapes at first glance conveys something more exciting and dynamic with further exploration. Patrick Richard’s photo exhibition at Kendra Gallery offers story-like compositions that unfold before your eyes. The photographs are mainly scaled to a landscape format that accentuates the feeling of endless sea and sky and magnifies the contrast between the immensity of nature and the tiny presence of humans, who are depicted as actors passing through an infinity of time. The individuals that we catch glimpses of naturally exude tranquility and peace, seeming to connect in silent communion, surrounded by a protective sphere where the craziness of the world has stopped for just a moment. The boundlessness of freedom that emerges in every shot is awe-inspiring. Patrick’s incomparable touch transforms this exhibition into a heartening journey that urges each of us to take a deep breath of serenity and focus on the essence of life. “Coastal Lifestyle” Exhibition By Djamur Community

T

he artwork in this exhibition is presented in the hope of allowing society to relish art. The pieces consciously communicate clear ideas and ideals. Komunitas Djamur has been involved in the Bali art scene for three years, and has gained a reputation as a rebellious movement, both among artists (for their art) and by society (for their ideas). On a deeper level, their rebellion acts as a guise for expressing the group’s search for the true meaning of ‘contemporary’ in a fast-paced globalized world. They thrive to create something new and at the same time break barriers, making the impossible possible.

RUDY SRI HANDOKO

BORN : Surabaya, 25 May | CONTACT: rudysrihandoko@hotmail.com | www.rudysrihandoko.com

Concept

After teaching himself the basics of painting on canvas, Rudy Sri Handoko felt there was a better way to express his creative side. In 2000, he found an alternative media for painting, and began creating masterpieces by applying coffee grinds to canvas. Considered the first artist to ever use coffee as an art medium, Rudy continues to use the caffeinated beans to this day as a tool to create his works of art, combining grinds with oil and acrylic paint on canvas to give images a more realistic form.

One place that coffee connoisseurs regularly see Rudy’s works of art is at Kopi Bali Sanur, where several of his pieces are on display to the public. Rudy has also presented his art pieces in several solo art exhibitions, including ‘(Re)presentasi Identitas Kultural’ and ‘Coffee Art’ at SJBS Gallery, Surabaya. His artwork has also been featured in group exhibitions, including ‘Divercity’ at Hanna Art Gallery, Jakarta and, more recently, in the ‘Aesthetic Response’ exhibition held at Elcanna, Jakarta.
