Welcome to the high season on Bali. It’s a great time to be on this island as the whole place moves and grooves to the throb of a flood of tourists coming from all over the world to our sun-drenched shores. Being August, which is historically called ‘the Italian month’, we are welcoming all our European friends back into town and also the many other nationalities arriving here too. We’re glad to have you aboard and the beat is here of course to make sure you have the best time the island has to offer. Make sure you keep this magazine handy as you’ll never know when you need it – and if you can’t put your hand on it in an emergency, get online and find out the latest info and updates via beatmag.com. Also, if you are feeling a little lost in the water, check Rusty Shackelford’s take on being a good tourist on Bali inside. Highlights are aplenty as August takes hold and right from this weekend the action begins. Ku De Ta’s back with another round of their famed events starting with this Sunday’s Bikini Party and next Saturday’s Birthday Bash. Potato Head Beach Club are holding a couple of knock out events in the next weeks; Ed Bangers and Empire of the Sun, and Cocoon Beach Club and WooBar have some great parties planned. Hu’u Bar is helping to launch FRV TV’s new beverage F Vodka, MBarGo is holding their anniversary and Double Six are getting close to the final countdown. There is so much going on around town at all the venues and while you are wining and dining in some of the best restaurants on the planet or grooving in the finest local bars and clubs, rest assured that you are in the right place at the right time. Bring it on Bali, bring it on. Check the What’s On and HereNow sections inside to get you to where you want to be this Bali High Season 2011.

Hails From Paris, France
Has Been Hailing from the city of love, Paris, Feadz is predominantly a child of hip hop. Starting his career as a turntablist, he scratched his way through the Parisian underground scene of the 90s, his mixtapes and diverse combinations of rap and electro catching the attention of the urban public. In ’99 he was asked to work on French producer Quentin Dupieux aka Mr. Oizo’s first LP ‘Analog Worms Attack,’ as well as tour with him to promote the album. Erica Rhone Woo bar | Fri 12 Aug | 10Pm Sounds Like House Hails From New York City
Has Been Erica Rhone developed her love for dance music by immersing herself in NYC’s club scene in the early 2000s. The way DJs controlled their rooms was breathtaking to her and she says she was determined to become a part of that energy. As soon as her college years came to an end, Erica made the giant leap from her hometown in North Carolina to New York City. Influenced by the likes of Ricardo Villalobos, Richie Hawtin, Lee Burridge, Steve Lawler, and John Digweed, she set to developing her own distinct and formidable style of music. From unique minimal beats to pumping tech and progressive house, Erica does not discriminate among genres, blending sounds in a way that makes them purely her own. To Erica, being behind the decks is all about moving the crowd physically and emotionally and she’s applied this philosophy with great success at such esteemed clubs as Pasha, Sullivan Room, and Cielo. Always a trailblazer, Erica has been just as happy to rock the dancefloors of clubs in Asia, Australia, and Jamaica as she has been to play at the world’s best-known venues. is Now Thanks to Damon Emanuel promotions, this New York sweetheart will land in Bali for the first time on the 12th of August to present a bumping set at W Resort and Spa’s entertainment hub, Woobar. Prepare yourselves for an all-night party with dynamic beats supplied by Erica Rhone and the skilled Woobar DJs, and keep things going into the wee hours and beyond.

Remy Irwan Boshe | Sat 13 Aug |10PM Sounds Like Progressive, House, Techno Hails From Jakarta
Has Been Amogst a select group of DJs, Remy Irwan was one of the pioneering Indonesian DJs bringing the underground sound to the nation in the early 90s. It was only natural that B1, the first underground dance club in Jakarta, appointed him as its resident DJ. By infusing deep house, tribal, progressive, and techno beats into his sets, he played an important role in spearheading the sound that today is a staple in clubs across the archipelago. Over the years, he has perfected his persona and musical style, developing ‘the’ Remy Irwan sound. The year 2006 was a particularly good one for Remy, and saw him winning a number of accolades, including techno DJ of the year and resident DJ of the year awards at REDMA, a club resident of the year award at PARANIOA, and the best local DJ ranking in Juice Magazine. He was also appointed UDG’s exclusive ambassador for Indonesia. Todd Terry Ku De Ta | Sat 13 Aug | 7PM Sounds Like House, Hard House, Progressive House Hails From Brooklyn, New York
Has Been Grammy Award-nominated DJ/producer Todd Terry has been immersed in dance music since he first heard European dance records while growing up in Brooklyn. Already an experienced disco and hip hop jock, he found something different in the tracks and decided to devote himself to that difference, an unpopular move in the NY scene of the time. By 1988, Todd had moved to England and made it big in Europe, cutting classic underground tracks under his own name and aliases including Gypsymen, CLS, House of Gypsies, and Royal House. In the mid-90s, the Ministry of Sound label released ‘A Day in the Life,’ a collection of his most powerful tracks. That led to a deal with Mercury Records, which allowed Todd to work with his favorite singers and performers. His first release under the deal, ‘Keep On Jumpin,’ featured the vocals of super-divas Martha Wash and Jocelyn Brown, together for the first time. The song became a Top 10 UK crossover pop hit and worldwide smash. Todd continued to break new ground as a producer/remixer, working with the likes of SNAP, Annie Lennox, George Michael and Bjork, just to name a few. In 1995, his remix for Everything But The Girl’s ‘Missing’ gave the British duo their first ever massive hit. Today, Todd is one of dance music’s most celebrated figures. With almost two decades of dancefloor domination under his belt, this experienced selector is only getting better. is Now Todd Terry’s many years as an iconic, trailblazing DJ have won him a legion of devoted fans, who consider him a deity of sorts, referring to him by monikers such as ‘Todd the God,’ ‘God Terry,’ or, occasionally, just ‘God.’ This almost heavenly figure will be one of the many DJs at Ku De Ta’s 11th birthday celebration, playing alongside Donni One (Australia), Supercozi (Japan), and percussionist Aldo ‘Bongo.’ The party will be Japanese-themed, with the beachfront club famed for its sunset sessions revamped as the land of the rising sun. So think Nippon, put on your best, and get ready to party till late.

Empire of the sun Potato Head | Fri 19 Aug | 10PM Sound Like Alternative, Electro-Acoustic, Pop Hail From Australia
Have Been Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore met in 2000 after being introduced by Steele’s A&R, Simon Moor. At the time, both were signed to EMI and had been working on independent projects. The two instantly became friends and immediately decided to begin a collaborative music project together. Their first release was “Tell the Girls That I’m Not Hangin’ Out,” which appeared on The Sleepy Jackson’s 2003 debut album, ‘Lovers.’ With Steele living in Perth at the time and Littlemore in Sydney, the pair independently worked on the project and organized meetings in Sydney, where they decided on the duo’s musical direction and style. Eventually the pair entered the studio to record the final material, all of which was entirely selfproduced. ‘Walking on a Dream’ was released in 2008, debuting at #8 on the ARIA charts and eventually moving up to #6. Their first single got airtime on many Australian radio stations, reaching #10 on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart. The second single, ‘We Are the People,’ peaked at #24 and was used in an American advertising campaign for Vizio televisions. Empire of the Sun was nominated for six ARIA awards in 2009, going home with four, for Album of the Year, Single of the Year, Best Group, and Best Pop Release. Are Now After a hiatus, the band announced in late 2010 that they were currently working on a new album and, as of June this year, have been busy in the studio. No information has yet been given as to when the album will be revealed, and many are waiting anxiously for the news. If you are one of EOS’ many fans, you’ll be ecstatic to hear that they’ll be performing at Potato Head on the 19th of August for a special costume party. So dress in your most elaborate attire and who knows, they might even slip in a new single.

A day rafting Text: Paloma W
The Beat magazine sent thirteen-year-old Paloma up the hill with some friends to discover Bali Adventure Tour’s new rafting operation for herself. Here’s her story, from north of Ubud and one and a half hours down the Ayung River.
M
onday morning, my brother and I are waiting for the Bali Adventure Tour Van. It’s 8.30am when the van arrives. We get in and greet the passengers sitting in the back. While we drive to pick up Chef Phil and Vallycya, our companions on the trip, I realize the van has air-conditioning, and the ride is going to be pretty cool. After five minutes drive we pick up Phil and Vallycya. We take photos, sleep, and before we know it, get to a building where other people are getting ready for a fun water raft. Once we book in, we quickly put on our fitted life jackets and helmets, put our valuables in a waterproof bag and follow the others down about 600 stairs! It was a good work out, but by the time we got down to the river our legs were shaking. After a few minutes we found our raft captain. He gave us some coaching and warnings and we headed out onto the river. All we had in our minds was “This is a race, and we’re going to win.” We quickly passed a few boats
and were coming in second, but because of a big bump we got pushed back to second-last! After a few encouraging words from Phil, we passed all the other tourists and came out first. We had so much time on our hands that we stopped by a massive waterfall and got soaking wet, but it was fun :). After some big rapids we put our feet up and flowed down the river. It was really relaxing yet full-on and exciting too. After the one and a half hour journey down the river we stopped at a big shack where we left all our rafting gear. We got led by the staff up another 500 hundred stairs to another van, with some Australians sitting in the front. The driver brought us to a small Balinese restaurant, where we ate a delicious lunch. We finished our lunch before everyone else (won again!) and got led to yet another van to bring us back to our houses, restaurants, and hotels. Although we were tired, it was a very entertaining and joyful experience with Bali Adventure Tours.
Bali Adventure Rafting offers 5-star service from start to finish. Tourist Tips
from Rusty Shackelford
L
et’s face it, being a tourist is hard. You’re immersed in an entirely different culture, thousands of miles from home. Some things are familiar, most things aren’t. Unless you have some extensive travel experience, the whole situation can be completely confusing to the uninitiated. Sometimes tourists live in ignorant bliss when it comes to how out-of-place they look and act. Others just fit in naturally. Many people are so well-adapted to their lives outside of Bali that it’s just hard to get used to another place. This is why I bestow upon you some very informative tips that will make you seem that much cooler compared to the other schmucks who have come here this high season.
1. Learn the language. Basic Indonesian is a ridiculously easy language to learn and although you might not have that much time, even attempting to pick up a few words will take you a long way. 2. Bintang singlets are appropriate only when you want to be ripped off by almost anyone with who deals in the price negotiation system of haggling. 3. Learn the currency. Yes, there’re a lot of zeroes on every Indonesian rupiah note but if you just ignore the last three zeroes on each bill, life will be way easier. 4. Don’t ever wear socks with your sandals. Seriously, just don’t. 5. SLR cameras are great for places you want to take really good pictures at. The mall probably isn’t one of those places. 6. Don’t be overzealous when driving a bike here. 286 people have died in traffic accidents alone this year. If you’re unfamiliar with the streets here, it’s probably a bad place to drive aggressively or drunk. 7. Don’t ever pick a fight with a Balinese guy. They grew here, you flew here. They have a lot more numbers on their side and they’ll use that to their advantage. 8. Once you hail a cab, get in. Once you’re near your destination, get your cash out. Nothing screams annoying tourist more than the ones that take forever to get these simple things done. They block traffic and promote generally bad vibes. Following these easy guidelines won’t just make you a way better tourist; it’ll probably make you a better person too. So relax and enjoy Bali responsibly.

he four lads from Sheffield continue their roll with their latest album. Arctic Monkeys might be the first name that comes to mind these days when British indie rock is mentioned, and not only because their debut album numbers bested those of former indie icons, Oasis. On their new album, singer Alex Turner’s gift for clever wordplay is front and center, with slower and more solid melodies dominating. There’s still plenty of youthful flair here, though, as can be seen from the rhythmic and haunting hit single “Don’t Sit Down ‘Cause I’ve Moved Your Chair.”

On her newest album, she covers songs by singers that she admired in her youth. Soul UK invites British soul musicians to recognize their country’s contributions and raise the bar in the industry. Knight describes the album as “a labour of love, and my tribute to heroes both celebrated and unsung.” Groovy, funky, and refreshing, Soul UK sets things up for Knight’s next album of original songs, due in 2012.

the Usual Suspects
Who is Keyser Söze? You’ll ask yourself the same thing again and again as you watch this movie, only to have the rug pulled out from under you at the very end. With a list of actors such as Stephen Baldwin, Gabriel Byrne, Benicio del Toro, Chazz Palminteri, Kevin Pollak, Kevin Spacey, and Pete Postlethwaite, this film is filled with suspense and mystery that will send chills down your spine even after the credits roll.
SAW
Imagine waking up chained to a wall in a windowless bathroom, with a dead body in front of you and a complete stranger across the room. A tape is the only clue for you, telling you to kill the stranger or face something bad happening to your family. This nail-biter starts slow but builds in suspense as the story unfolds. You’ll never guess how it ends…
The Sixth Sense
M. Night Shyamalan has become known as the king of plot twists and The Sixth Sense is the movie that got him that title. The film tells the story of a troubled, isolated boy with the ability to see and talk to the dead. The film stars the young Haley Joel Osment and a rather pale Bruce Willis. It was nominated for six academy awards, so you know it’s good.
Fight Club
If you’re one of those guys that wants to see Brad Pitt beaten to a bloody pulp, then this is the movie for you. A weird story about an insomniac who finds relief in a fisticuff club known simply as ‘fight club.’ The story is confusing and the end is even more so. You have to watch it twice to understand the whole story (Well I did anyway).
Inception
Sci-fi movies tend to be a bit kooky, and Inception is no exception. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio, who plays a corporate spy secretly extracting valuable commercial information from the unconscious minds of his targets. Quite a confusing story to digest. To figure this movie out, just remember: if the top is still spinning it’s not the real world.

Jeren Kiring Wins Second Under-16 Rusty Gromfest Title at Kuta Beach
Under 12 Podium
L
ast year’s Rusty Gromfest series title winner Jeren Kiring added a second consecutive Gromfest under-16 title to his growing list of accomplishments after battling it out in a closely contested 20-minute final at Kuta Beach against runner-up Angga Mardiana, edging out Mardiana by less than a point to finish with a combined two-wave score of 10.60 (out of a possible 20), compared to Mardiana’s 10.23. The third-place spot was taken by Koko Mitsuantara, and fourth by Usman. Kiring was last year’s Coca-Cola ISC Junior Champion and is looking good to repeat for another championship this year, with his smooth yet aggressive style and complete array of maneuvers. For his win at this event he and the other finalists receive valuable Junior Division championship points, in addition to a mix of Rusty and Dakine products and accessories, an Apple IPod, Aerial7- headphones, Sabre eyewear, MacBeth shoes, and vouchers from Freedom Surf Shop. The two-day Rusty Gromfest saw a whopping 92 groms from all over Indonesia, Australia, Brazil, and Japan converging at Kuta Beach on Saturday July 23rd to compete in three divisions, under-12, under-14, and under-16, for the prestige and prizes that come with this much-anticipated annual event. The waves were pumping on Saturday, with sizeable 4-5 foot sets rolling through to challenge the fearless groms in round 1. On Sunday, there were literally thousands of perfect 2-3 foot waves hitting the Halfway sandbar, giving the remaining quarterfinalists ample opportunity to show off their high-performance maneuvers while chasing a finals berth. In the majority of the Sunday heats, at least one if not more of the four competitors reached their 10-wave maximum before their 20 minutes was up.

Under 14 Podium
In the under-12 final it was Kuta’s Raju who bested the diminutive Made Tedi from Serangan and wunderkind ripper Rio in another tight final, with just over a point separating their three final scores. At any given point it was anybody’s guess who might bring home the win, with these young groms showing skills far in advance of their years. West Java grom Dian Hendriyanto from Pangandaran was a standout in the under-14 division, aggressively attacking the (for him) well overhead waves with a mix of deep bottom turns and big floaters to get out in front of last year’s under-14 winner Komang “Komo” Sastrawan from Nusa Lembongan. Tommy Sobri and Reef Doig finished third and fourth respectively. Receiving the special Coca-Cola Surfboard Award as the most promising grom in need of proper equipment was Matius, who is Javanese but lives in Kuta at an orphanage, having no parents or family. Rusty GM Kane Faint explained how Matius was selected; “We asked the local groms here at the beach who they thought most needed a new surfboard, and they all agreed on Matius. They said that he really loves to surf but always had to borrow their boards because he didn’t have one of his own, so on behalf of Coca-Cola it was very gratifying to be able to give a brand new custom surfboard to this deserving young grom.” [Tim Hain]

Big Things Brewing
With a staggering array of high-quality beers and cocktails at reasonable prices, mouth-watering cuisine, and a funky, laidback beer garden ambiance, Brewer’s is a winner.
Beer gardens are popping up everywhere these days in Bali, with most focusing on creating the perfect setting. While this is admirable, a proper beer terasse should also have a few more tricks up its sleeve, which Brewer’s certainly does. Serving Beck’s, Stella, Hoegarden, Peroni, Leffe, and Erdinger (to name just a few), the brasserie also makes all of its signature cocktails and every single item on the menu with, you guessed it, beer.
0110 beatmag.com 110
While the idea of an entire menu centered on the amber nectar might feel like overkill, at Brewer’s everything is done so smoothly that you begin to wonder why more places don’t follow a similar philosophy. The beer is cooked thoroughly, allowing the alcohol to escape, so there’s no worries if you’re bringing the little ones or don’t like to indulge.
stout, and brown sugar, and the layers of biscuit and mousse take it to another level.
We arrive and decide to sit in the cozy but hip downstairs area, which has plush booth seating and tables overlooking the action on busy Legian Street. We get right into it, trying out a Jagerbomb (54k), a Sour Lips cocktail (44k), and a rich chocolate milkshake (30k). What comes out right away is how well blended things are at this place. The Jagerbomb, a shot of Jagermeister dropped into beer infused with ginger, hits you nicely but is smooth enough for those who like a mellower flavor. The Sour Lips is a bit reminiscent of a cream soda, and while the booze is clearly there, it’s not overpowering. We also try a Rose Lychee Pilsen (39k) which has a dominant lychee flavor and a good bit of bite to it. Next, a crisp Beck’s (70k) is perfectly matched with some Buffalo beer wings (39k), which tip their hat to the hot wing’s birthplace with a tangy, buttery blend of subtle spiciness (chili addicts can request that things be kicked up). We then move on to the mashed beer burger (65k): two perfectly grilled patties stuffed with a rich potato mash alongside a fresh salad drizzled with vinaigrette. Our next dish, the similarly named beer burger, is what well-done should be. It’s juicy and flavorful, presented with a stack of french fries and a creamy aioli dipping sauce, the mild, rich cheese blending in perfectly with the toppings and fresh bun. The highlight, though, is the stout tuna teriyaki (60k), which is perfectly seared in tangy sauce, the inside melt-in-yourmouth rare, and comes nestled on a bed of ripe sliced tomatoes and crisp lettuce, stripes of creamy lemony sauce keeping it company. This is one you might have trouble sharing. To round things off, we try an apple cinnamon raisin filo (50k) and the big surprise, a “beeramissu” (40k), which despite its unusual name, turns out to be one of the best takes on a tiramisu any of us has had. It has hints of coffee,

They specialize in perfecting the use of a makeshift method of imagery known as the pin-hole camera. By recycling discarded items such as old cans, pipes, and boxes into cameras, they are able to create remarkable pictures on a small budget, going against the dominant paradigm of photography, which gets more expensive by the day. hrough the use of different materials, media, and techniques, Davina combines anthropological methods and art, expressing her desire to create artworks that have open-ended meanings. She creates fascinating assemblages through the free play of interpretation. Like tone poems, her master pieces stress the relevance and joy of the moment. Her art functions rather like springboards, allowing those who interact with it to leap into a broad spectrum of themes and emotions. Her pieces formulate intricate storyboards that tell a multitude of tales to anyone willing to open their eyes, ears, and mind. A recognized artist in Bali and internationally, Davina has attracted the attention of art collectors worldwide. Date : Now - Aug 25 Venue : Ganesha Gallery Four Seasons Resorts Bali at Jimbaran

THE WORLD IS MY STAGE
Concept
In realizing her literary works, Pranita believes that to create big ideas, one must start with the small matters around us. Themes related to the everyday lives of women are the main focus of her stage performances, which bring to life classic forms of poetry as well as short stories. She often casts a critical eye on traditional Balinese culture and focuses on social introspection.
Performance
As a leading modern female poet in Bali, Pranita Dewi has often been invited to appear in regional and international cultural art events. She has won several writing and poetry reading competitions in the past, gaining much attention from the literary community. In 2004, she released her first book of poems, entitled ‘Pelacur Para Dewa.’ Her words have also been featured in various anthologies, including ‘Tuhan Langit Begitu Kosong’ (2004), ‘Herbarium’ (2007), and ‘Keranda Emas’ (2009). In 2009, she was also one of the actors involved in ‘Mama, I am Sorry,’ a play by Kelompok 109.

lmost a decade ago, Debbie and Ina had a dream: to create a haven for those seeking relaxing and affordable foot reflexology involving painless techniques that still maintained the health-inducing benefits of the art. The establishment would be something not too fancy, yet comfy and clean enough for everyone to enjoy. The first Cozy spa opened on Sunset Road with only eight male staff members. Today, the spa has expanded to a second new venue, which opened 100m from the original location in May, boasting 98 staff members, 40 foot reflexology areas with full facilities, and 78 rooms for full body treatments.
