The Idul Fitri Lebaran holidays are here and as we all know, it’s going to be busy. Keep your cars parked at the house and get on a bike if you want go anywhere, because during this next week the roads will be packed, ramjammed to the gills. Well, that’s the theory, anyway. Since our printers were closed for ten days over Idul Fitri we had to produce this TB a week earlier than usual to get it out on time. We apologise for any problems that may have caused you. VIP Areas. I think it has to be said that the now very common VIP areas, placed right in front of the stages at the big summer parties are naff. Offering a better service for people with the cash to pay for it is all well and good, but the venues are already charging a princely sum to get through the main door, so why cut off access to the stage or show to everyone? It’s too elitist and is another example of how people’s mindsets have gone adrift in the last few years. The service isn’t any better, the drinks are the same, and in many people’s opinion they only help to destroy the atmosphere of the show. While it’s not the end of the world, everyone is talking about it and it’s time the bars or organisers concentrated on all their guests, not just a select few. Possibly, or maybe miraculously, they could even make more money in the process. Meanwhile, we had a couple of the best parties Bali has ever seen on the weekend of 19 and 20 August. There were plenty of shows on around town at all the bars, but August is the time of the big event and the big venue, and we were treated to a couple of great ones then. First off the block was Potato Head with a massive live show, fireworks and party till late, then KuDeTa stood up to the line and turned on a classy nautical themed event that was possibly the most stylish, camp and refined party we have seen here on the island. ‘Allo Sailor! All aboard as we take you inside the nightlife action of the last two weeks or so of the high season on Bali. It was busy out there but our crew managed to get to most of the shows. This year has been particularly memorable and there’s still more to come. Check the What’s On and HereNow sections for all the info.

Fritz Kalkbrenner WOO BAR | sat 3 sept | 9pM Sounds Like Techno, Soul Hails From Berlin, Germany

In 2008, he produced the soundtrack for the motion picture ‘Berlin Calling’ alongside his brother Paul Kalkbrenner, with both siblings also appearing in the film. The track ‘Sky and Sand’ was his breakthrough single, opening the doors for his first solo musical venture and helping him create his own persona apart and breaking away from the shadow of his brother, Paul. Fritz’s music is warm and heavily influenced by tender soul sounds and vocals, distinguishing him from other electronic artists. His first album “Here Today Gone Tomorrow” is a wonderfully silky, sophisticated techno album that combines instrumental pieces and vocal numbers to create well-structured narratives. is Now Hot off a German tour including Berlin’s Watergate festival, Fritz will be landing in Bali after a show in Singapore. The soulful techno artisan will take to the decks at Woobar for an evening of deep melodic tech beats that will move hearts and feet. Let’s hope he grabs a mic and we get to hear those vocals very smooth in action and live.

Summer Syndrome Party

B

efore arriving at PH, I was wondering if they were going to pull a crowd. It was already a kinda strange, Ramadan influenced August, they had an Aussie band with limited fame, a claimed strict costume party dress-code, an 800k entrance, and a huge venue to fill. But at 11.30pm on Friday night, the traffic was backed up, clogging Petitenget, and the inside parking was full. We had to pass an array of flag bearing men showing clubgoers where the entrance was. Ascending the stairs and into the venue, we came across a jaw-dropping spectacle, which I’m sure even surprised PH. It looked like a sea of Indians at first (maybe cause that’s about the easiest costume to get your hands on and was suited to the band playing) but the place was packed like never before. Around midnight Empire of the Sun came on and with the help of a tight dance group, one of the best light and stage shows yet to be seen at Potato Head, and while the sound could’ve been a bit louder (which probably would have caused too many problems with the neighbours), the band came out and knocked ‘em dead. They went through their limited list of hits and a few new ones before one of the biggest fireworks displays I’ve seen on the island finished off the Empire of the Sun set that probably would have had my dogs jumping the fence at home a mile away, but would have left the punters thinking they’d got their money’s worth. The night went on till the late hours with DJs, dancers, and everything else that makes a classic festivallike show, and of course slowly descended into the usual rave-type depravity, but... .... credit where credit’s due; they put on a great party. It’s fantastic to see venues believing in themselves, putting the money where their mouth is, preparing a huge show to match the entrance fee, and, in the end, pulling an even huger crowd to match. Hats off. Bravo. Bravo. [David Trauts]

Ku De Ta Nautical White Party

T

he Ku De Ta white party took to the high seas on Saturday with a celebration of epically naval proportions. The nautically themed event was a very cool twist on the regular white party theme and Ku did not disappoint, making it a night to remember. The only thing that seemed to be missing was an imminent threat of Japanese attack. A big band, accompanied by what looked like a local version of the Andrew Sisters, entertained guests during a quite delectable dinner, and the party kicked off with a large formation of sailors marching the length of the club in full parade and ending up onstage with some very sexy dancers. The stage rivaled any WWII era USO show and marked the start to what would become a very naughty-cal night. The venue design totally enhanced the experience; it felt like you were on the set of South Pacific, with tropical meets nautical themes. A surfaced submarine was in the Ku pond and all the Ku staff were dressed in full navy whites. Party-goers were also in their best sailor gear, turning the scene into a sea of white that would put most naval balls to shame. The sound system that supported Ku De Ta’s naval operations might as well have been a battleship’s main battery. Massive amounts of bass blasted through the crowd with accurate mixes by Btk and a flotilla of DJs that included Spen and Karizma? More photos can be seen on beatmag.com

The Extremely

Complex Art of Haggling in Bali By Rusty Shackleford

Here in Bali, there’re a lot of clueless tourists who’ll pay just about anything because they consider things cheap no matter how bad they’re getting ripped off. If you’re an economist, you’ll probably see Adam Smith’s invisible hand at work. If you’re like me, you see a system built on the back of sucker tourists where it makes perfect business sense for every merchant to charge the most unfair price possible.

T

his is where this small guide comes in handy, read it, study it and someday you might not have to pay Rp 150k for a bottle opener shaped like a penis. So clue in and… 1. Never show too much interest in the item in question. If you do, it’s not the end of the world, but it means you’ll probably have to haggle that much harder for that special item. If you feel like negotiations are stalling, do what politicians do and… 2. Walk away. Being fed up and leaving the negotiation party is an excellent way of forcing a salesperson to lower his/her price. It’s like giving an ultimatum to go down or not sell at all and it’s pretty magical. Never hesitate to use this tactic and if vendors sell similar items nearby, use that to your advantage. When the seller calls you back the first time, look back, and ignore them to continue to check out his/her competitors. If the seller comes to you, just cut off all communication and do something else, like stare at your ipod or read a book. 3. Don’t ever get bullied. Some places that many tourists frequent are filled with vendors who know

beatmag.com 074

how to overwhelm their subjects. Sometimes they’ll even grab you to prevent you from leaving, or pull you into their store. You don’t have to get nasty, but be firm. Don’t even look at them and walk away. If they sense weakness, they’ll descend upon you like a pack of rabid hyenas. 4. Be funny. Nothing is more satisfying that ripping off a complete douchebag and on the flip side of that coin, a seller would much rather get a reduced profit from someone they actually like. Try to find common ground, smile, and never press your price in a hard-line way. The more casual and less antagonistic you are the better, and it just makes for a more pleasant experience all around. 5. Wear out your opponent. Sure, these guys probably have a lot more hours logged haggling away, but with sheer grit and determination you might get that item you were looking for at a fraction of the sucker tourist price. Note: These haggling practices are to be used for purchasing items. Using these tactics when dealing with law enforcement or massage services are not advisable.

Actually, I don’t have any special microphone while I’m on stage. Normally, the event organizer has prepared a good microphone so I don’t need to bring my own. But in case I need a special microphone, I have my own. I use a Shure Sm series dynamic church microphone.

But when the crowd is young, of course I speak and dress casually and throw in some jokes & slang so my crowd feels comfortable with my performance.

Tell me about your experience as international radio DJ in the Maldives? Wow, I loved that! It was my first experience working with western announcers. When I was there, I had an Australian announcer as my partner and we did a prime-time show in the morning. We had to be one soul (Tick Tock) while we were on air, so I had to maintain my partner’s mood and try to understand his jokes. Indonesian jokes are mostly different from Western jokes (laughs). And as a result of that precious experience, the way I think about life is broader and more open-minded. I also got to explore the country, which has beautiful islands and beaches. The most important thing was that international experience is good for my CV.

On radio shows as the announcer, are you the type of person that sticks to a script, or do you loosen up with improvisations? No, I don’t stick with the script. Improvisation is a must for my show because I have my own on-air character. So when people listen to Hard Rock Radio, hopefully they will know me from the information I gave and the way I speak without even hearing my name. It’s hard, but I keep working on improving my radio personality.

What’s the most interesting thing about being a radio personality for you?

Interviews are the most interesting thing for me because one of my ambitions is to have my own talk show on TV. When I’m interviewing people, I’m challenged to come up with quality questions, make the interview interesting, and make listeners stick with the show and interact with us. I’ve interviewed a lot of international acts (Hoobastank, Café Del Mar, Eric Bennet, Arrested Development, American Idol Keith Martin, HURTS, Ron Kingston, Neon Trees, The Click Five, Angels and Airwaves, Tiesto, DJ Tsuyosi, etc.), and local singers (Peterpan, Slank, Padi, Ada Band, Shanty, Rossa, Changcuters, Ahmad Albar, RATU, Yovie and Nuno, Tangga, Indonesian Idols,

SHE, Marcell, Sandy Sondoro, etc.), and Indonesian celebrities. All of them have different moods and personalities, so I have to get close and personal with them.

How about your Claser VJ? Can you tell me more about it?

It was a fun experience. That was in 2009 and I was chosen from a bunch of contestants nationally. The winners were 2 people. The male winner was from Bali (me), and the female winner from Jakarta (Santri Handayani). For the audition, I sent them a video and didn’t come to Jakarta like the other finalists did, and I won. Both of us got contracts and a prize trip to New York.

Since you meet so many different people every day at different occasions, do you have any difficulty remembering names and faces? Remembering the faces of people that I have met before is easy, but remembering names? It’s such hard work. I always put someone’s name on my “contacts” on my phone complete with their initials and workplace. For instance: Dedi The Beat, Aldi Editor, etc. So when I meet them randomly I search for clues from my contact list to remember their name (laughs).

You keep updating your online social network accounts and such. What’s the mission? Yeah, it’s true. I love social media and always sharing information (daily activities, music/movie info, current news, trending topics, etc.). Being active on social media networks makes it easy for me to get friends beyond my area. I do FaceBook (www.facebook.com/rendyrustam), Twitter (@ RendyRustam), Flickr (www.flickr.com/rendy_ rustam), and my blog (www.rendyrustam.tumblr. com). The mission is to promote myself. Sometimes I got clients for MCing from social media as well.

Shoutout to BeatMag

Thank you very much for the interview. I really appreciate it. Keep up the good work, and keep being the best Bali & Jakarta biweekly entertainment gig guide. I want to share some great words too: pain is a beautiful thing. It forces us to stop, let our guard down, and just think. In a sense, it serves as a check, demanding us to reconcile the mortality that we so often abhor.

Food review

SAng ria grill I

n the heart of busy Legian, Warung Asia’s sister restaurant offers grilled delights in a tranquil garden setting out of Bali’s past.

Any discussion of Legian restaurants is bound to touch on Warung Asia. A longstanding Thai food favorite, the place has only one major issue: its own success. It’s often packed and after negotiating the Legian streets and searching for parking with mouth-watering Thai delicacies on your mind, the last thing you want is to wait for is a seat. So I was understandably happy to hear that the people behind Warung Asia recently decided to open up a sister restaurant just down the street. Last Thursday, I hopped on my bike and headed down to check it out with some friends. Arriving at Sang Ria Grill, I was happily surprised. The place has a huge parking lot and a vast garden area, both of which are pretty unusual for the neighborhood. Walking in, you can see that a lot of attention has been paid to the décor of the place. The style is definitely Bali, but a Bali that is less common these days. There’s bamboo and stone, plants and water; a bit old-school but not retro or nostalgic. beatmag.com 084

The menu is also a bit traditional in that a little of everything is on offer. Some people come here to enjoy Warung Asia’s food in a more tranquil setting, which is definitely a winning combo. But beyond that, Sang Ria has a lot of different things going on. There’s some Malaysian and Singaporean flavor, a bit of Middle-Eastern, Italian, and even Mexican, and a whole lot of grill. Veggies are not forgotten, with an entire vegetarian menu dedicated to the herbivores. We muse over the many offerings with some glasses of Sangria (46.5k). The drink is nicely flavoured with rich spices and fresh fruits that are not only edible, but delicious.Very refreshing. We decide to start with the avocado chicken and crisp bacon salad (38k) and a dish of Tabouleh (32k), both of which are sizeable enough to share. The chicken in the salad is grilled with a bit of a Mediterranean touch, and is nicely paired with fresh lettuce, arugula, and cucumbers, a bacon and tangy balsamic dressing rounding things off nicely. The tabouleh is actually made with couscous, and is light, not oily, with hints of mint and lemon. It’s crisp but not at all dry. Next up, we go with Grilled Spice Chicken (59.5k), Malay Chicken Laksa (38k), and a nice slab of the house specialty, Barbecue Pork Ribs (79.5). The grilled chicken is a meaty breast, and is perfectly juicy but well cooked through. It comes with an exotic salsa of apples, mango, and pineapple, some cinnamony yellow rice, and two kinds of sambal. An unusual combination, but it works very well. The mild, light Laksa is creamy, coconut and lemongrass spicing up the soft noodles, chicken, and prawns. The ribs come in a sticky-sweet bbq sauce and are tender and falling off the bone. They’re juicy without being too greasy, and although there’s a big side on the plate when it gets to the table, within minutes we’ve reduced it to a pile of well chewed bones. There are sides of roasted baby potatoes and some smoky barbecue sauce, as well as a fresh salad that adds some balance.

We finish off with a tiramisu (30k) and some fudgy chocolate cake for dessert. Perfect with some tea or a rich black espresso. Whether you want classic Thai food in a relaxed setting right in the thick of things, or are on the prowl for some grilled delights, Sang Ria is the place to go. With live music performances in the evenings, it’s also an ideal spot for knocking back a few drinks with good friends. Irfan Young

Dj Marco “Polo” Krisna and Cecere the Alter Ego METIS BALI T

he up-tempo tone set by DJ Marco “Polo” Cecere is ideal for reminiscing on good times in Bali, especially at Metis Bali, where the focus is on art and nature. Mr. Cerrone, raising the bpm a bit on the typical lounge-esque sound, provides the right soundtrack for some wine and tapas at sunset. Call it ‘aperochic’: the soundtrack to preparations for a night out clubbing on the island. This hand-picked selection of tracks is startlingly rich, Iggy Pop adding attitude and excitement with “I’ll be Seeing You” and Marco Polo’s own tracks like “Grey Skies,” “Puro Prazer,” and “From Goa to Bombay” giving it a liquid ethnic-bossa feel that jives and drives you down Bali roads with rice fields in the background.

Funk-a-delic, blues infused, and filled with technical melodies, Krisna’s at his best on tracks like “Johnny Blues,” ‘Don’t Judge Me,” and “God Will Save You.” Clean rock acoustics are also evident in the simple ballad “I Don’t Wanna Lose You.” If you’re into guitar and keep an eye out for Bali’s freshest talent, you probably know what Krisna has to offer.

Apocalyptic Movies

Worm Fodder

Prophecies on the end of days are always plentiful, and many movies have added to the theories on how humanity will come to its end. Here’s some different cinematic takes on the doom and gloom of the apocalypse…

2012

An ancient Mayan prophecy dictates that the world will end on the 21st of December, 2012. Watch as our world is decimated by a global cataclysm. This movie basically focuses on the heroic struggle of survivors, but the amazing destruction scenes will send chills down your spine.

28 Days Later

The cult British horror flick shows how Greenpeace activists can actually put an end to civilization. Well, when they get bitten by a virally-infected chimp, that is. Witness what happens when eco activists turn into flesh hungry zombies infesting the whole of England.

I Am Legend

After finding a cure for cancer, the world seems saved. Unfortunately, the treatment transforms people, as well as dogs, into hairless, sun-hating creatures with the sole purpose of feeding on flesh. In this take on zombiedom, we follow a solitary survivor as he not only tries to survive his impending doom but maintain his own sanity.

Reign of Fire

Dragons. Yes. These fictitious creatures may actually lead to the end of mankind. Apparently, the winged creatures were the cause of the dinosaurs’ extinction and now have their minds set to ending humanity. With the ability to mate like rabbits, the dragons quickly overrun our world, leaving a handful of survivors trying their best to slay the massive behemoths.

War of the Worlds

Roughly based on H.G. Wells’s sci-fi thriller of the same name, the movie depicts the (almost) end of mankind at the hands of extra-terrestrial life forms. Gigantic tripods roam the land, causing havoc with vaporizing laser cannons wherever they go. The military are powerless against them, and the only thing that can stop them is… germs? Guess the aliens should’ve washed their hands.

Feature Game On!

The successful Dynasty Warrior franchise, since its initial release in the late 90s, has sold over 12 million copies. The simple strategic elements of these colossal hack n’ slash games makes them highly addictive. In anticipation of the release of Dynasty Warrior 7 later this year, here are some similar titles to quench your thirst for mass mayhem.

Dynasty Warrior: Gundam 3

Based on the ever popular Japanese anime series ‘Gundam,’ this is the Dynasty Warriors franchise’s take on mecha madness. Players get the chance to select from a vast range of mechanized giants, ranging from the original Gundam series of the 70’s all the way to the latest incarnation ‘Gundam 00.’ Unlike other Dynasty Warrior games, range attacks are possible. Add to that a way better enemy AI, and you have a game that is a challenge to beat and an absolute ball to play.

N3II: Ninety-Nine Nights II

This Xbox 360 exclusive takes a JRR Tolkien approach to the Dynasty Warrior style of gameplay, pitting armor-clad knights against elves and goblins. Compared to its prequel, N3II’s story takes on a much darker tone, with buckets of blood and gore, but unfortunately fails to bring anything new in the form of gameplay. There are better hack n’ slash games out there, but none with a fantasy setting like this one.

Fist of the North Star: Ken’s Rage

Another anime/manga turned video game is the ‘Fist of the North Star’ series. If you’re not familiar with the story, you can relive Kenishiro’s grueling struggle to become the rightful successor of the art of Hokuto Shinken martial arts, set in a post apocalyptic world. It’s not a hack n’ slash, but a smash n’ bash. Players take on a world filled with infinite baddies, punching and kicking their way to the top while busting a few heads along the way. Pure bloody awesomeness!

By exploring different facets of movement and experimenting with different sounds and installations, dLanguan present themes that relate to current social maters, as well the environment, using their artistic imagination to create unique fantasies.

Performance

dLanguan has presented their socially-based performing art on numerous stages and at cultural events around Bali. A performance entitled ‘Plastik Wrap’ was notably featured at the Earth Day celebration for 2011. Other environmentally-themed performances have included ‘Marine Pollution’ which was presented at the Coastal Lifestyle Charity event at Snail Café, ‘Siapa Aku, Bagaimana Kita’ which was a part of the Bali Yang Binal event, ‘Malaikat & Setan’ at the Dion and Kebon Tubuh album launch, and ‘Dimana Kita,’ which was performed at T Art Space Ubud and Bali Seafarers Sanur.

Sesuai dengan nama acaranya, maka tema pakaian pun diwajibkan berwarna merah. Tidak seperti biasanya New Musro didominasi oleh warna merah dan keseruan khas Red Square pun berpindah sesaat kesini. Red Square moved its festivities to New Musro for an event titled ‘Red Square Nite Out’. All of Red Square’s resident DJs were there to supply the beats for the night.

After Red Square moved to New Musro for a night, it was LUV’s turn to take time out from its vacation to entertain the weekend crowd. The whole LUV’s ensemble were present, from its beautiful resident DJs and LV C&C Models to flairing bartender, just a pity the LUV dancers were absent.

S

On the 19th of August Fantastic Groove chose to play songs by local bands, but remembered to slip in a few top 40 tunes into their performance. Resident DJs Ical and Oki ended the night with pumping house tunes.
