It’s an end of an era next week in Bali nightlife as 66 Club closes its doors for the last time after 24 years in operation. There was a time when all roads led to the biggest and most established club in town, no matter if you were in Kuta, Seminyak or Ubud, but with the changing times and new competition spreading the party crowd all over town and keeping them there till late, its heyday became a thing of the past and it was pushed slowly towards its closure. Many big nights and good times have been had by just about every person coming to this island in Double Six over the years, and everyone has memories of the crazy times when any night of the week there was a crowd to be found there on Seminyak beach. It was a venue that for good or bad put Bali on the worldwide partying map, famed throughout the world, bringing electronic dance music to the island and the world’s best DJ’s on a regular basis. There’s one more chance to experience Double Six Club next Saturday night, September 24 with a massive line-up of local and international DJs coming to take part in the Closing Party show. The Beat is proud to be part of it and it should be one more huge night to remember and one not to be missed for all 66’s fans over the years and generations. We hope to see you there. In this edition of TB we see the return of Sky Garden to the fold in a big way (if you didn’t notice) and we’re all glad to see them back. They are holding a number of huge shows over the coming months and we’ll be there to cover one and all. Read more about the new Sky Garden inside. There are plenty more shows all over town in the next two weeks. Read about them in the What’s On and HereNow sections inside and keep abreast of the latest events via the beatmag.com website and mobileoptimised website on your phone.

D’Bagindas Boshe | Fri 30 Sep | 10pm Sound Like Melayu Pop

Hail From Bandung

Have Been D’Bagindas is a relatively new band on the Indonesian music scene, formed by members Dian Purnama aka Tile (guitar), Dandy (guitar), Michael Christian aka Mike (keyboard), and Beny Rianto aka Bian (vocals). The idea for the band to perform mellow Melayu pop music came after Tile heard one of Mike’s compositions which was very different from the band’s metal style. Predicting Melayu pop would make a comeback, they sold their concept and signed a deal with Trinity Productions. In early 2010, the band released its first single titled ‘C.I.N.T.A.’ which became an instant hit on the domestic music scene. Following the success of previous Melayu pop bands such as ST12 and Wali, D’Bagindas bring a younger, fresher look to this old style of music. are Now Fresh out of the studio after working on their upcoming, soon to be released album titled ‘Yang No.1’, we see the young lads return with their mellow Melayu pop tunes that have captivated the Indonesian youth. The band will perform at Boshe on the last day of September for their many fans, as well as promoting their new album.

Matt Caseli Hu’u | Fri 23 Sep | 11PM sounds like House, Tech, Funk, Tribal Hails From UK

Has Been He’s almost a household name in Bali, and with the achievements Matt Caseli has gained in the past decade it is hard to deny that he’s a DJ who’s been at all the right places and all the right parties. Having just marked his 15th year as a resident at the world renowned Pacha Ibiza, Matt is also currently signed to two of the biggest record labels in dance music; Axwells massive Axtone Records imprint, and top Dutch label Spinnin Records. You can safely say Matt Caseli is on the right road to rocking the globe, but before his current success he started work as a producer at London Records, being the man behind Baby.D’s Top 40 UK chart anthem ‘I Need Your Loving’ and gold selling album ‘Deliverance’. Moving to Ibiza in ’96 to break away from the urban music scene that heightened his career, Matt found his true passion for the beat in house music. After a resident DJ post at club Bora Bora, he caught the attention of Pacha after several guest appearances which lead to an official resident spot at the club and Matt becoming its ambassador. is Now The last six months have been hectic for the long time Ibiza resident, spending many of his days burning the midnight oil prepping many major releases for renowned top labels. Despite his busy schedule, Matt still finds time to entertain his fans and has been doing it over the past few weeks in Bali and this time he’ll be playing at Hu’u on the 23rd of September. If you’ve never been to Ibiza, then enjoy the next best thing by partying to the beats of one of its regular DJs.

What the Heck Has Been Happening at Sky Garden?

Sky Garden started as a simple, forward-thinking, dining and entertainment venue on Jalan Legian, right in the centre of downtown Kuta in 2005. From those humble beginnings they have now become one of the largest and most frequented venues on the island. Sky has always had a trend setting, contemporary edge right from the beginning, utilizing dynamic ideas, design and promotional visuals and activities to attract a variety of customers over the years including expats, locals, and obviously a large bunch of tourists. With the final stages being completed now, and with a firm date of completion locked in for this December 26th, we thought it was time the beat caught up with Marketing Chief, Sean Mac for a chat about Bali’s busiest venue. How long have the renovations taken till now at Sky, and what are the highlights? Well, we opened in March of 2005 with only 48 m2 with permission to build a roof top bar above the 2nd floor. Since then we’ve leased the neighbouring building (previously MY ROOM) as well as the 30are hotel and property behind. Our eventual plan is to build out all the way to the back and reintroduce a 36+ room hotel, but so far over the last few years we’ve been continually busy completing the 3000m2 F&B concept floors over the four levels. We’re open daily serving over 5000 guests through the current five venues including Blarney Stone Irish Pub, Club Cyclone, Brandy’s RnB Room, Sky Garden Lounge and the VIP Gold Pass Lounge, but by December we’ll have four more areas completed and ready for business including ESC, George’s Sports Bar and Sky High Club. And right after in June 2012 we’ll introduce Bali’s first artificial wave promoting the new super charged adrenaline sport of Flow-boarding. It’s like Skateboarding without wheels, surfing without a fin, snowboarding without a mountain, and wake boarding without a boat… Why did it take soooo long? Wow, it has been a while hasn’t it… My first response would be that ‘nurturing’ was needed.

There seems to be thousands of people at Sky Garden every night, while most other venues struggle to find a significant crowd. I’m sure a lot of people wonder how you do that. What’s the secret? How do you do it? We listen to our guests whenever possible. And yes, we’ve had our fair share of issues, but we’re adamant about addressing them as soon as possible. We truly want all of our guests to have fun and feel comfortable at all times. We want everyone to walk away with a satisfied feeling, having had a great experience overall. Is food still a big part of the Sky philosophy or has it now all moved to clubbing? Yes, we’re still very passionate about our food, and we still have many people dining with us every night. We still offer the same quality foods and still have the same legendary promotions like Rp1k Wing Wednesday, Rp15k Taco Tuesdays and Rp50k all you can eat Sushi Sundays. How about the entertainment, what do you have on offer to attract the punters? LOADS! On any given night we have twelve DJs playing in five rooms, live singers, fire dancers, pole dancers, go-go dancers, professionally choreographed dancers, models, MCs and more… There’s always some type of action happening. Being one of the biggest clubs and entertainment venues in town, you’ve had your share of detractors over time. Things like security, parking and general Kuta style yob-ism have always been, especially, on local expat’s minds over the past couple of years. What have you done to address those concerns? We’ve taken these concerns very seriously, and we’ve addressed them accordingly. Security has always been an issue in Legian, especially at night, so we’ve hired the best crew. Each is trained to introductory police level with certification. We also have the full support of many local police agencies to keep everyone and their possessions safe. Parking? Well, this is still a problem, but we encourage all of our guests to take a taxi if they plan on drinking. If people insist on driving, they may park out back along Jl. Mataram and walk down the gang to Legian. Kuta-style yob-ism*… Your words, not mine, but the Kuta experience is one of a kind… You come here for the excitement!

The Flowrider coming soon.

*Yobo comes from the word ‘boy’ spelt backwards; a common Australian term for larrikinism.

Jocelyn a moment with SalvadorBali

Attitude, that’s what it’s all about, and who handles it with grace and smiles and gets the job done? The hostess with the mostess, Jocelyn, from Bali’s iconic Ku De Ta. That’s who.

S.B. O.K. Hostess with the mostess, who are you? J.C. O.K. cool, Jocelyn Cunningham, age? No (laughter). Next question? From Melbourne originally, but spent a lot of time living all over the place, Queensland Islands, Sydney, Hong Kong, it varies. S.B. Background geography? J.C. I went to regular school and university and have a degree in disability studies. S.B. Wait a second, this is getting interesting... J.C. That stood me in good stead when dealing with a lot of the people that have come along in the hospitality industry. S.B So, the college of life? J.C. To pay the rent I used to waitress and study disability, but in the end hospitality took over.

Feature A long time ago my friend and I did a Thelma and Louise. We left our jobs and boyfriends and bought an old station wagon and drove around Australia for nine months. Amazing time, aged twenty five then, and we ended up in the islands around the Great Barrier Reef, that was my first proper job where I started to fall in love with the events side of things and what you could do with them.

single red rose, a ring being put into a dessert for a guy who wants to propose to his girlfriend, Mercedes Benz launches, advertising awards... Then there’s the events side which is the parties, and that’s a really huge big deal. In that respect, it’s very much a team effort, also a community thing as well because we’ve got iconic people, suppliers and decorators, production people, Donni of course and Billy.

S.B. At what point did you leave Australia? J.C. Started global, through Europe twice, lots of Asia. Working wise, Hong Kong was the longest. Six years I think.

S.B. Was Arthur, who is now gone, a big influence, energy wise and vision? J.C. Absolutely. Having worked with him for so many years, we still look with Arthur’s eyes.

S.B. How did we end up in Bali? J.C. I attempted to go back to Australia and spend some time with the family in Melbourne doing freelance events. Then I was lured by Ku De Ta to Bali! S.B. That’s a first, how did that come about? J.C. A head hunter that I once knew in Hong Kong. He had received this brief for this job in Singapore, he looked at it and thought, this job is made for Jocelyn, where the hell is she? So he called around my friends, asking “whatever happened to Jocelyn?” Found me in Melbourne and said “I have a job for you in Bali”. Thank you very much, but no thanks. He said “no, no, you don’t understand, it’s Ku De Ta”. That made things different because I had been to Bali and Ku De Ta as a guest and loved it. Danny and Arthur of Ku De Ta were in Melbourne at the time and we had a chat. They dazzled me with their footwork, and got me completely... hook, line and sinker. S.B. How long ago was that? J.C. Six years ago, They gave me a twenty four hour cooling off period to think about the job. That night the second bomb went off in Bali. S.B. Yeow, go baby go. J.C. It’s true, I looked in the newspaper... oh my God... but even with the bomb I never had a doubt, the decision was made. S.B. What was your actual title for the job? J.C. Functions and events manager, that was the role and I’m still in it. S.B. Were you influenced by boss or the other directors, or did they let you run with the ball? J.C. There are really two different sides to it. There’s the functions side, which is the bread and butter that we do through the year, which is doing cocktail parties on the beach front. Even things such as organizing a

S.B. Ku De Ta has a lot of serious competition nearby now. How does that affect you and Ku De Ta? J.C. Seriously, we’re really not worried, we know what we do and we do it well, and we continue to do what we always do well. We’ve always thought of doing new and different stuff, but in all sincerity we’re really focusing on the restaurant side of things as well. We really care about the food and the people getting what they want to eat, they don’t want to stand and drink a million Bintang’s and jump in the pool. S.B. What pool? J.C. Exactly (laughter). S.B. On that note, a bikini party without a pool? J.C. Can you imagine if we had one? (Laughter). S.B. And you all get along? J.C. Yeah (laughter), can you believe it? Considering the time we’ve all spent together, yeah, everybody does get along. S.B. As for yourself, do you have future plans in the hospitality realm, graduating, doing other things? J.C. Of course, very open ended, we’ll see what comes. Bali will come to an end at some stage and the world’s a big place. S.B. Your philosophy? J.C. Life is not a dress rehearsal. S.B. Mine is the complete opposite; everything is a rehearsal for life (laughter). What do you have to say to your fans out there? J.C. Fans? Ah, give me a break! O.K. Live every day, embrace people around you no matter who they are and try to assume they are good, unless they prove otherwise. And live with colour. S.B. I like that. Chow mein, Salvador Bali.

Ecko Satria Interview by Dedi Kristian

you Might have seen him in a club spitting rhymes and moving crowds as an MC, on the breakdancing floor doing windmills, organizing parties on upper and underground surfaces, or maybe leading a crew called Aerial. Satria Ecko is one Hiphop homie we just had to chat with.

Feature Trends come and go, but you remain steady with urban influenced art; what made you stay? It’s all about soul, like you cannot change your soul. If you love something, it will stay within, though sometimes you get tired of it, but the calling sounds from the heart. Trends are just a temporary pop, it will go away sooner or later. But this urban love stays with my soul. You once tried surfing, now you’re fluent at dance art, organising events and even involved in the nightlife industry. Tell us the story. I’d been surfing for seven years and got two sponsors and all. But I’ve loved urban music since I was 10 years old. Everything rolls from there and now what I do is just keep the movement. I learn from people and I share with people: “each one teaches another”. You’re involved within the hip-hop and breakdance movement in Bali. Where did it all start? Hip-hop in Bali started way before 2000; it was actually 1985 with few crew breakdancing in that era. I’m just the second generation, but now we have a community called Dewata Hip-hop. Hip-hop took you this far, did you enjoy the ride? It’s not easy being part of a movement to some place you never expected to go. Some like it, and some might not, but a movement is a movement. Good experience is the best teacher. Back in 20032005 we were always hassled by security guys if we started breakin’ in the clubs.. hahaha Your job is a club MC; any interesting parties/ stories? Yup.. When I MC’d at Break Invasion #3 the Indonesian Bboys jam at Mbargo November 2010 and Aerial Crew’s 7th anniversary party at Boshe VVIP club this year. Tell us about Aerial Crew Aerial crew is my family! I started this crew in 2004. I took the name from surf tricks ‘cause I did that trick a lot, haha.. We’ve had so many experiences it’s impossible to pick one, although winning first place for the national level breakdance competition “Lets Dance Global TV” (best of the best) in Jkt 2008 was pretty awesome. We were also runners up in the Flexi Dance Terror against crews from Vietnam. Aerial members are: EC Spicy, SickNick, Minus Chyper, Boogie Punch, Ewox Taste, ONE, Skipze, Lil P, Dyzee, The Jaws, Black1, Monstruo, CJ (ADHD Holland), Cherry Bom, and BlackGold.

Organising any event, from underground to commercial, takes dedication. Any lessons learned along the way? When organising something we don’t need idealism. I love underground hip-hop, and I like commercial art too, but in this part I have to be in the middle to keep the balance, for the good of both sides. So, the lesson would be ‘togetherness’, since music is a universal language for all to understand. Within the week you’re throwing a hip-hop gig at Twice, where hard rockin’ rockers usually let off their steam. Can these two communities get along? Yup, Twice Bar is the place where almost all genres can collide. I don’t see any huge gaps between hiphop, punk rock, metal, and hardcore as long as you have enough respect to show to others. Big respect to our homies at Twice. Shoutout to beatmag? Beat magazine is Fresh! I always look forward to a fresh copy of it. Every edition, hahaha. Keep movin’ guys, wish you good vibes and keep fresh, you ROCK!!...

Food review

A jewel in the crown of the lushious vast Ayana Resort, Dava r e s ta u r a n t o f f e r s modern fine dining in an impeccable setting.

Restaurant Dava Restaurant Jl Karang Mas Sejahtera, Jimbaran Tel : 702 222

Finding Dava, a restaurant nestled in the bosom of the beautiful Ayana Resort, is an experience in itself. Golf carts whisk visitors to an enigmatic entrance, which opens onto a reception area floating on a glassy pond overlooking the Indian Ocean. Follow the stone pathways over the water, go down some stairs and through a set of doors, have a passing look at the vintages on offer in the glass-fronted, temperaturecontrolled wine cellar, and you are in the restaurant itself. The hip, modernist-inspired interior is laid out on a circular plan, surrounded by waterways that open up to the endless vista of the ocean. In the background, chilled out lounge music plays, creating the perfect atmosphere for a martini or two. Dava has a long list of signature martinis. We try two of the recommended house specialties, the oddlynamed Bloody Bucket (190k) and the Espuma Red beatmag.com 098

The bucket - an up-to-date take on the bloody mary - is spiced up with wasabi and topped with reverse emulsified sucro, presenting a perfect smooth blend. The out-ofthe-ordinary champagne cocktail is really something, with gracefully layered raspberry bellini and raspberry champagne resulting in a complex presentation that is topped off with blueberry caviar. It is almost as impressive to watch it being made as it is to drink. Almost.

The meal continues with a juicy slice of roasted grouper, presented on a tangy gratin of brioche crumbs and fennel confit, swimming in bouillabaisse. The dominant anise-like fennel aroma of the broth is a perfect match for the soft, perfectly cooked grouper, which has been lightly flavored to allow the natural meaty taste of the fish to stand out.

The next course is a crab cake with avocado gazpacho and garlic confit. The meaty crab has a bisque-like flavour, accentuated by cool avocado and mild garlic. Each course on the degustation menu offers just enough to keep you satisfied and wanting more. The dishes are so beautifully presented that it’s almost a shame to dig in, but who can help it when food like this is on offer?

With a winning line-up of fresh, ever-changing dishes, the kitchen at Dava offers a flawless dining experience in high style, which should earn it a place on everyone’s itinerary.

his year might well be THE year for this indiefolk band and their quietly stormy tunes. Their entire album, for a short time, was accidentally made available for sale too early on iTunes, no doubt helping them make it to number four in the UK charts on it’s the first week of release. Bon Iver’s self titled album makes a pleasing noise if you’re into folk, acoustic or even a little bit of rock. “Minnesota, WI,” ambles along nicely with banjo, sax, flutes and a bit of pedal steel guitar thrown into the mix. The other songs are a journey of introspective, earthy and gloomy chants to soak up and warm yourself on a winter’s day.

alib Kweli keep things real - let’s just say he’s not known for money, cars, gangsters or misogynistic stories. Knowing his highly educated family background, it’s no wonder his flow speaks wisdom - street wisdom to be exact. Blunt facts and poetic protests litter the album, like in the song ‘Gutter Rainbow’ where he champions a “voice for the voiceless, and hope for the hopeless”. Musically the whole thing is a step up from previous albums, thanks to producers like 88-Kys, M-Phazes, and Marco Polo. For those who are expecting another dance-urban mix, this is not for you. Kweli remains resolutely artsy, with a profound maturity running through the thread of each song.

Saturday Morning Cartoons Revival If you grew up in the late 80’s and early 90’s, you’ll remember waking up early on Saturday mornings to catch the latest cartoon shows on TV while still in your PJs. Many of these shows have been revived in the new millennium, but are no longer animated. Here’s a selection you might want to pop in the player for old time’s sake.

Scooby-Doo

The loveable talking Great Dane makes his CGI appearance alongside his human counterparts in this humorous flick starring Freddie Prinze Jr, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Mathew Lillard and Linda Cardellini as the Mystery Inc. crew.

Transformers

Michael Bay movies are known to be filled with big explosions, and this live action take on the classic cartoon is no exception. This Transformer fanboy dream-come-true is filled with more explosions you can shake a stick at, and is topped off with the lovely Megan Fox as the resident eye candy. Blockbuster!

Speed Racer

The Wachowski brothers’ take on this classic racing animation is set in a colourful futuristic world, yet still maintains the retro styling of the original cartoon. I wish my car could do car-fu like that! The Matrix in cars I guess…

G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra

The original American hero comes to life in this action packed flick, which tells the tale of how the world’s most deadly terrorist organization known as Cobra came to be formed. Ignore the silly futuristic costumes, I’m just guessing they couldn’t afford to dress everyone up like the old toys.

Yogi Bear

The bear that was always “smarter than the average”, finally makes his first appearance in the real world thanks to CGI technology. Voiced by veteran comedian Dan Aykroyd and joined by sidekick Boo-boo (Justin Timberlake), the furry duo do their best to save Jellystone Park and figure out once and for all who swiped their pic-a-nic basket...

Game On!

Let’s Get Kinect-ed The success of Nintendo’s WII has left rivals wanting a piece of the motion censored console pie, so Microsoft and Sony have released their own add-ons for the current gen consoles. The PS3 has been given it’s ‘Move’, while the Xbox 360 has its ‘Kinect’. Here are three of the best Kinect games out today. In the next edition we’ll see what PS3’s Move can offer.

Child Of Eden This is by far the best non-controller based game out there to date. This fantastically artsy rail shooter is a full-on assault to the senses. Combining breathtaking graphics with amazing music, it feels as if you’re the conductor of an electronic orchestra by simply waving your hands around to control the game. In short: Child of Eden needs to be experienced because it’s hard to explain in words!

Kinect Sports Play bowling, table tennis, volleyball and other strenuous physical sports, all in the comfort of your home. You will break a sweat after playing these games as you jump, duck, slide from side to side and swing your arms to play all the assorted games. Careful not to play in your undies as the Kinect’s camera takes snap shots of you in action when you least expect it.

Michael Jackson The Experience Fulfill your dreams and become the next king of pop with this music videogame. Learn from Michael Jackson’s own choreographers and dancers as they teach the steps to move like the musical legend. The Kinect’s built-in camera puts the gamer directly into the game as you follow the moves on screen and see yourself depicted in glittering pixelated glory.

O

ne of the most prolific, original and talented designers in Bali, Carlo Pessina is best known for his striking furniture and accessories featured in many of the island’s most prestigious hotels and homes. Today Carlo stands as first and foremost among a small handful of truly original world-class design artists living and working on Bali. The integrity of his work is based not only on their functionality but more so as living, evolving works of art that enhance space and create a balance between nature and man, artist-creator and art lover-users. They are a celebration of the best of Bali and the island’s supreme ability to nurture and sustain both local and expatriate artists. This exhibition is designed not only to present Carlo as an artist but also as a mini-retrospective of his artistic career. It consists not only of his more sculptural pieces within the gallery but also a series of “installations” set up within the grounds of the Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay. I KETUT JAYA (Kaprus) Born Karangasem, 15 July 1970

Contact ktjaya@yahoo.com

Concept

The works of I Ketut Jaya - better known as Kaprus, are inspired by the traditional life of the Balinese. By observing the rituals of Balinese Hinduism, he is motivated to recreate the unique shapes and colours that are commonly found in the floral offerings locally known as ‘canang’. Many ritualistic symbols and shapes find their way into his abstract forms of art, giving a different perspective to the dominant religion of the island.

Exhibition

Kaprus has showcased his unique works of art since 1995, featuring them in various exhibitions throughout Bali, Surabaya, Jakarta, Jogjakarta and even abroad to Germany. He has also participated in several group exhibitions, which were featured in ‘Kelompok Lempayung’ - held at the Hilton Hotel in Surabaya in 1999, Pameran Wajah-Wajah at Egon eV Passau in Germany, and most recently at the Bali Inspires exhibition at Museum Rudana.

ere at The Beat, we’re serious about partying. We party just about every night trying to keep our beloved readers informed about the hottest events on this island. So when we want to recover after a two-night bender researching an event filled weekend of celebratory intoxication, we need some serious therapy in order to relax our overworked bodies… and livers. Gold Dust is indeed the perfect place to do just that. It’s the only reputable spa (that we know of) located in the Echo Beach area. The spa sits a mere stone’s throw away from the ocean and offers a variety of treatments that truly nurture and heal worn out bodies. One of the highlights is their amazingly plush chairs where one can indulge in some reflexology therapy in total veg out mode. If more extensive treatment is needed, Gold Dust offers an array of full body massages which include a surfer’s massage, a

iloufar means lotus or water lily in Persian and one look at this beautiful villa will tell you why. Lily ponds form the roof and surround the villa, which gives it a very tranquil atmosphere as well as insulating the room below from the tropical sun.

Located down a private road just a tad bit North of Canggu, Niloufar Villa has the best of both worlds, seclusion from the outside world and a relatively easy commute to town. The villa itself is perched on a hillside with a beautiful flowing river below. The five-bedroom pavilion layout follows the contours of the landscape and features multiple levels which give the villa a very natural feel. Built with locally sourced building materials that feature river stone walls and giant stone sinks, the villa possesses clean lines that are almost minimalist but melds seamlessly with a more organic design theme. Each room features large colourful neo-expressionist painting that could have been painted by Basquiat.

Accomodation

ASTON Rasuna Regular Jakarta tripper, Chef Phil Mimbimi takes us through a stay at the Aston Rasuna in Kungingan.

T

he Aston’s front-door drop off is a bit of a swing-around when you come in from the main road. Of course, with security blockades being the norm in Jak-Town, confusion is unavoidable. Here, you roll up a hill and then back down past the front to the security check and you’re in. Baggage pull is a mix between security and a random bellperson. Somehow, it all seems to get in. The check-in counter is constantly busy, which is a healthy sign, and the agents are, for the most part, professional and courteous. Usually there is a quick check performed by housekeeping to ensure that the room is ready. Most of the time, if there’s some sort of a hitch, it means a complimentary beverage at the lobby lounge bar and 20 or so minutes later, off you go to the room. Elevator service is definitely not one of the

beatmag.com 140

strong points of this establishment. Out of three elevators, one hits only odd-numbered floors, another hits only even-numbered floors, and the middle one doubles as the service elevator and hits all the floors. This can cause delays, confusion, and frequent long waits for a lift. The double bedrooms are spacious and comfortable. (Singles and triples are also available) They are bright and offer sun windows overlooking the other towers, the pool, or a bit of the mega-city. The showers are consistently strong, though the towels are a bit meek. The kitchen area is decent and the refrigerator size is quite comfortable. Kitchens are equipped with a water dispenser and microwave, and these amenities come in handy. Room service has its ups and downs, though. It seems that the tuna spring

rolls and satay are quite popular and are thus often unavailable or sold out. The pastas are mostly good. Sop Buntut and Soto Ayam are guaranteed winners and the previously mentioned appetizers are great when you can get them! The rest of the dishes seem to be a bit off the mark. The TV and cable systems in the rooms are topcaliber and well placed. Getting the Internet set up can be bit bumpy, but mostly without a fuss. The sofas in the living room are comfortable and the beds are very cozy. The air-conditioning seems to be able to get the room down to a consistently cool temperature, which is relieving coming in from the traffic and heat of the big city. Overall, for the location, it’s quite a decent stay. Getting a space that’s as luxurious as one of the numerous 5-star hotels can easily break the bank.

I like the sense of staying in a place that seems more like a condo or apartment that’s been lived in. The cleanliness gets by on its own and the spaciousness gives you the room to spread out. Its location and ease of getting in and out make the Aston a recommended mid-level accommodation spot in town. Verdict: An all round winner.
