Last week a big chunk of Seminyak nightlife disappeared forever. First Deja’vu closed its doors and will be turned into an up-market eatery – imagine Jakarta’s Social House meets Bali – and then, just up the road, the biggest club of them all closed its doors for the last time last weekend. It was a huge night and seemed that every person that had had anything to do with 66 Club over the past 24 years turned up either early or late for one last time to say farewell. Weren’t there so many big nights spent down that place over the years? I didn’t realize, or kind of forgot, how many memories were wrapped up in that building, and kind of got choked up thinking about all those times, both good and bad, but now it’s gone, the last hurrah… and off we go again. So meanwhile, Bali moves on like a speeding bullet and while hotels and restaurants spring up like mushrooms, it seems that the Seminyak nightlife is moving up towards Petitenget more than anywhere nowadays. In the end it will probably be right up in Canggu, and maybe that Yak Party on Friday is a sign of the future, leaving Seminyak behind totally for its northern neighbor. Speaking of which, we have a 98.5fm Friday Fresh Dance Party at Petitenget’s new Mint Bar with welcome Mint Vodka shots, DJs Joy and Mamsa holding down the turntable fort and dancers breaking some moves on the floor. All are welcome, free entrance. It should be fun in the newest bar in town with the best sounds and times on your dial. 98.5 The Beat Radio Plus. The ANZ Ubud Writers Readers Festival is on again next week from 5 – 9 October. They have a very interesting line-up of luncheons and evenings and see inside for further details. Balinale 2011 Since 2007, the Balinale International Film Festival has invited foreign filmmakers to screen their films, while experiencing Indonesia’s accommodating culture and diverse locations for possible film locations or story ideas. Founded by internationally acclaimed actress and producer, Christine Hakim and Bali Film Center director, Deborah Gabenetti, the festival has also given Indonesian filmmakers the opportunity to present their work to a global audience, and network with international filmmakers. Running from the 15th to 20th of November, the week long film fest will once again take place at Galeria 21 Cineplex, Mall Bali Galeria. Not only screening movies, the festival will also feature workshops and free seminars, offering an opportunity for wannabe filmmakers to learn the tricks of the trade. BIS Breaks Guinness World Record On September 4th, the 597 attendants of the Bali International School (BIS) Family Fun Festival helped to break the Guinness World Record for the largest pot luck party. Held on the BIS football field from 3-6pm, the event marked the close of the school’s four-day celebrations of its 25th anniversary. The previous pot luck party record involved 479 participants and was set on May 15th, 2010, at the Slideluck Potshow in New York. Open to all members of the BIS community, each participant in the World Record attempt was required to bring their own plate of food, dessert, fruit or beverage to share with everyone. During the Family Fun Festival, a stage featured live music and dance performances from students, teachers and members of the school’s security staff. BIS’ student-led community service groups also organized several sports games and charity fundraising activities, raising around 4 million rupiah for selected charities.

9th Kuta Karnival Once again the highly anticipated festival celebrating food, music and dance will invade the beach front of Kuta. Supported by various business around the beach front region, the festival that began as a communal revival after the bombings in 2002, and first held in 2003, has blossomed to become an annual event that is eagerly anticipated by many. ouble Six Club on Seminyak beach closed its doors last week after 24 years of being the biggest club on the island. Many of the faithful from over the years were there to see the place off in grand style, and credit to the organisers that they did just that... the club was looking great dressed to the nines for her last night on the town. DJs came from all over the country to offer their services for the closing party and the music appropriately started right from the beginning with some real old stuff and continued to the latest sounds. With many an old track heard and an old face seen, nostalgia was on the agenda. Most would have left at the end of the night with mixed feelings. ANZ UBUD WRITERS AND READERS FESTIVAL 2011 Dozens of Programs, Hundreds of Writers, Millions of Inspirations
T
he Festival is back and promises to wow audiences once again this October.
Imagine the perfect holiday. For most, it includes luxuriating in the company of a great book. At UWRF, chances are that the author of that book will be sipping a cocktail right beside you. Hundreds of writers and literary figures from Indonesia and around the world will gather at this festival in more than 80 programs that have been meticulously put together. All UWRF events will be held in various charming locations in and around the enchanting town of Ubud, Bali. In one of the main programs titled ‘Indigenous Voices: Longing and Belonging’, Indonesian living legend Putu Wijaya, along with award winning writers Albert Wendt and Anita Heiss, will be discussing indigenous people’s perceptions of the concept of land and how they relate to literature, philosophy and religion. This goes hand in hand with this year’s festival theme, ‘Nandurin Karang Awak – Cultivate the Land Within’. Another highlight will be Australian singer/songwriter Paul Kelly coming to talk about his new book. In the workshops, audiences are offered the chance to learn everything from travel writing, food writing, editing, to the art of literary criticism. Booker prize winning novelist DBC Pierre will be sharing in an informal workshop revealing secrets on how to bring out the book inside of us when all we have to start with is a feeling.

If all the mental stimulation starts to get overwhelming, cultural workshops offer handson experience in learning the craft of Balinese cooking, batik making, or concocting traditional herbal remedies. But the fun doesn’t stop there. This year’s festival highlights are not reserved only for the grownups. UWRF, with generous support from Exxon, introduces its first youth program, presenting 24 educational and entertaining programs open for all kids and teenagers with no charge at all. 15 students and teachers from underprivileged schools in East Java will also be coming to Bali to join the fun of this special. Hats off to ANZ bank, who stepped in to offer the festival sponsorship just eight weeks before the gala opening. It allows the annual festival, which has never missed a year since 2004 to keep going boldly onwards. “We are pleased to support the ANZ Ubud Writers & Readers Festival, rated as one of the world’s top six literary festivals. The festival also enables us to show our support for Bali and the development of Indonesian literature and culture,” stated Joseph Abraham, ANZ CEO for Indonesia. One of the big names behind Indonesia’s rockabilly campaign, a diehard Elvis fan, a band manager and now an active event consultant, and interestingly a tattooed preacher. What’s up with this Rock ‘n Roll papi? The Beat hung out with Jappy Sanger.
Feature You’re behind the beginnings of the rockabilly movement in Indonesia. Was it a challenge to educate people who had never seen it before? I kickstarted the progression with the band The Hydrant, and introduced a culture to the genre. It was a tough job to do, but somehow it worked as a marketing tool. We have this desire in our hearts that when peole talk about rockabilly, they will remember The Hydrant from Bali. This has been made easier thanks to bands like Superman Is Dead who are also flying the flag. We’re so related sometimes people think we’re from the same management. Personally I have a close relationship with SID and Navicula, I see them as crazy-creative boys, fearless against the stream. Back then, metal was a big industry, and I’d say it’s all about timing… Navicula’s time came when the Seattle sound (a la Nirvana) started to fade and along came Melodic Punk (a la Green Day). Back then, what was rock ‘n roll to you? Elvis, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin etc. They all made their point across to millions of young people including me. Rock ‘n roll is not just about music, there’s fashion, drugs, sex, etc. From an underground movement to national industry, what’s the key? Patience, and keep being persistent doing it! Your time will come…. How do you feel watching your band grow bigger with time? Very happy and proud. Happy because that’s what we aim for, but the most important thing is to open many eyes to Indonesia’s music industry, that Bali is as good musically as other places within the country. The Indonesian music industry: Cruel and complicated, or is it just all about the money? Yes, if you call it a cruel zone, but not really complicated. Do we need big money in advance? Yes, but that doesn’t guarantee anything. Look at Samson - they have big money and are successful, but other names with the same big pockets didn’t make it - take GAMA, for example. I asked some major label friends “is there a secret formula for successful bands” and they weren’t sure what the answer was, but its probably something like Malay pop with romantic lyrics, a miserable life, being exploited and love affairs etc. That sort of thing.
Now you’re an active event consultant, what’s the difference between the music industry and the event business? The transition just happened, since I’ve done pretty much both professions at once. Any events so good you can’t forget? Every event I handled has its own good points and uniqueness, but if I had to pick, I’d say any music related events since I love music. Some of the international events I’ve been involved with were Iron Maiden, Deep Purple, Scorpion, Click Five, Bob James, Tommy Lee, Van Katoen from the Netherlands and a few other national artists. You consider it a successful event when… You have tons of good things to reminisce about when something is unforgettable from the event. And now, you are initiating a new movement. Tell us more. I’ve created a band called JP & The Revivals, and with some friends we are crafting a movement called GoL (God is Love), aiming to reveal God’s greatness to ourself and others, even at times when we can’t gain real happiness from our surrounding friends, family etc. But God who created us is always good, and as a matter fact, if you look closer, he came up with a good plan for us. We come to places such as Kamasutra, Boshe, Hard Rock Café, Mall Bali Galeria, etc to deliver our message to the young bloods. Why the young blood? Because these champs will lead our future! What inspired you to start this movement? There’s an Indonesian quote: “Every elephant leaves its tusks when they die”. It made me think, what mark do you leave when you die? There’s only two definite things, life itself and death for sure. I want to leave a good note before I face the second one, haha. But most important is I can be a role model for my children. E.S. Hi Eliana Stefani, I’ll be forty years old in October, from Sao Paulo, Brazil. My whole family are doctors, my mother is a doctor, my father is a doctor and actually they met in a hospital and my brother and sister are dentists and married doctors. I’m the only designer trying to teach them alternative medicine and nutrition, and they don’t want to hear it.
S.B. Background Schooling?
E.S. Schooling was at Montessori. From that, University where I did social communications: advertising and marketing. By the second year in university I was already working with Carlos Mieli, M. Office, a Brazilian brand in the international fashion calendar. I was an assistant designer and quickly became a designer. I loved the work, that was a lot of research and creativity.

Feature S.B. How old were you at that time?
E.S. Eighteen, started at sixteen. It was funny, because suppliers wouldn’t want to do business with a student but in that case I was the decision maker, the designer, so they had to.
S.B. How long did that last?
E.S. Two years, I would go to school at night. It was intense.
S.B. What was after?
We borrowed money from the bank and we paid it off in six months. The business grew, exporting and pumping up production and the next thing I knew, we had many computers and a hundred people working. With the crisis in America business became affected and I was exhausted. There were so many projects in the drawer which I could never get to, and many other ideas. So the little voice of freedom in my head said stop. After 10 years that was the end of Spicy
E.S. From that I moved to Ellus, where I specialized in Jeans design, I had to know everything about jeans, washing process, sewing, etcetera. That was another two years.
S.B. How long did you go on your hiatus?
E.S. That lasted for five years. After I left Ellus there was a big designer competition, Phytoervas Fashion awards, I sent my collection to them for fun and then I win (Laughter), at the time I was setting up my own business, which was called Stefani and so the name was in the media and that helped a lot. The prize was that they would produce a fashion show with professional models and producers, magazines, T.V… It turned out to be a lot of work (Laughter). But eventually, I got overwhelmed, trying to create a brand and being a business woman, and keep the marketing going. The Brasil economy at the time wasn’t good and I left everything behind and moved to New Zealand to become an English student.
S.B. So here we are with your new endeavor, which is a first with the label Lawe.
S.B. Bali?
S.B. Your store in the Bukit region will be opened any day now, if not already by the time we read this. What will be the name?
S.B. So now you’re twenty four?
E.L. That happenned after been in New Zealand for 2 years. (Laughter) I didn’t want to come to Bali at all, I wanted to go to a more radical place like India, Nepal, I was twenty six, a girl friend talked me into buying a ticket, that was in nineteen ninety six, in the end she spent a week and I spent a month in Bali. I came back the same year four times, loved the island at first sight. Very soon I started working for Body and Soul, I ended up doing modeling, designing, graphics, advertising for two years. I did graphic design for a few companies and also modeling. When I decided to do my own small business, and so Spicy began. The Spicy logo, which came from a good friend drawing a wave, in which I turned inside out to what became like a heart, later on it I was in Munduk looking over the temples and houses and the Spicy’s logo-like shape was all over the island! Coincidence yes, the right logo. I started the business in the room I was renting. A Balinese friend become my partner who had a factory. The bombing affected Bali and I went back to Brazil for three months and came back to open a store in Seminyak with Putu.
E.S. About a year, but still creating products, I did that with no particular ambitions, my focus was to heal myself from the ordeal of Spicy.
E.S. Interesting for sure, I found a sample of brown cotton that I took from one of my suppliers ten years ago, I always had this feeling about this cotton, and it was beautiful color. I decided to do a little home decoration line with the flower of the cotton that was transformed into thread done by hand. The cotton has already a beautiful brown rusted color and doesn’t need dyes that affect the environment badly. All natural!! That’s the beauty of it. The product is sustainable and echo friendly. I am working with a small color card, three colors: brown cotton, white cotton, and white cotton dyed with indigo, which is the natural dye from the indigo plant, no chemicals.

S.B. What is your philosophy on life?
E.S. I think that you have to love all the way, from work to the person that you are. Everything has to work being based on love, otherwise there’s no reason to be.

itting like some kind of pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, Klapa is reached by winding your way down the scenic route through the picturesque Bukit countryside toward the famous Dreamland, now known as New Kuta beach. This area is really starting to take off, with a stunning golf course, trendy hotels and a stack of luxury villas and resorts popping up all over the place.What better place then for these high-flyers to convene over a top end menu and wicked drinks list. With it’s prime location overlooking the famous surfing waves of Impossibles and Bingin, Klapa feels a million miles away from the old Kuta beach, and a trip up here is highly recommended if you feel like getting out of town for a bit. With this in mind, I arrive at the cavernous venue sometime around the mid afternoon mark, giving myself plenty of time for a bit of noshing before the sun goes down. Making our way down the huge central spiral staircase, the missus and I pull up a pew on the large concrete decking area in front of the airy restaurant.
right on the sand at the bottom of the steps to Dreamland beach. The steak is equally divine, with a fantastic tender texture that is complimented perfectly by the mashed potato and foie gras sauce. Suitably stuffed, we finish with a chocolate fondant to share for dessert (55k++), which hits all the right spots with its gooey warm chocolate filling and champagne strawberry sauce. There’s no fiddling around with different menus for certain times of the day here, everything you need can be found within the pages of the hefty main menu. From daytime grazing and light lunches to evening meals and decadent desserts - it’s all in there, and we set to work making our choices over a couple of apple mint coolers (35k++) whilst lapping up the warm afternoon sun. To kick things off, we opt for the chicken salad (45k++) and the smoked salmon tower (65k++) to share of course.As much as I’m a fan of smoked salmon, I’m drawn to the fantastic flavour combination of the shredded chicken, pink grapefruit and crunchy beansprouts of the salad, given a cheeky Balinese twist with a dash of chili sambal. Next up we go for a bit of surf’n’turf, with a plate of ikan kakap panggang (100k++) and a succulent cut of chargrilled Black Angus beef tenderloin (325k++). New on the menu, the fish is done ‘Jimbaran style’, with that fantastic barbeque flavour that goes so well with a dollop of fresh sambal matah. However, write off this pop country troubadour as a two trick pony at your peril. ‘Put You in a Song’ gives off the the sort nostalgic feel you just don’t hear much on radio these days, while Banjo laced ‘Without You’ is glorious Americana. Piano ballad ‘All for You’ shows that Urban is keen to invoke a bit of good old heartache. Not an album to listen to everyday, but a welcome change from the manufactured pop and hip hop stuff that’s currently out there.

ali’s Marlon Gerber and Tai ‘Buddha’ Graham from Australia exhibited impressive displays of high performance surfing in an amazing final day of competition at the Rote Open 2011. Being the fifth time for Gerber to compete in a surf competition in Rote, and the runner up in three of the four events, his victory this time was very sweet indeed. Gerber entered the event as the number one ranked ISC Open surfer, and as a somewhat unexpected surprise he was informed by Coca-Cola ISC CEO Tipi Jabrik back on the beach that his win now made him the 2011 Coca-Cola ISC Open champion as well! Gerber pockets $2,500 for his win, as well as the many rewards that follow after being crowned the best surfer in Indonesia. In the International Division, it was Australia’s Tai Graham who went home with the big US$4,000 first place prize money, saying: “I’ve surfed in competitions since I was a kid, and this is the biggest prize money I have ever won in my life. And to win it in such a beautiful place with all the locals and the Bali boys here is tops. It’s my third time coming here to Rote and I love this place. The waves were pumping today for the most part, and I was stoked to get a couple of good ones in the final. A big thanks to Pak Amos and all the crew here for such a great event. And to think that I almost didn’t come!” Graham hails from the Gold Coast, but is a long-time resident of Bali and an active participant in the Indonesian surfing and entertainment scenes. The two-day Rote Open 2011 presented by Billabong event also saw competition in several other divisions, namely the ISC Masters and ISC Women’s, and a special Rote local surfing division.

Concept
Novi sees theatrical art as a way to inspire people by expressing her outlook towards both major and minor social issues. The messages which she portrays to the audience must have universal appeal, and through a communicative performance, she believes her ideas are able to reach out to the audience. To Novi, a good stage performance must be something that doesn’t alienate its audience with too many abstract concepts, but simple enough for them to understand and feed their curiosity. Not focusing on one particular style of performance, Novi’s main objective in her art is to convey a message for the public.

Novi has seriously delved in the world of art, literature and theatre for the past four years, expressing herself and her ideas through Sanggar Poerbatjaraka Fakultas Sastra Udayana. Since she started in 2007, she has participated in several performance art titles including ‘Tanah Air Mata’, ‘Hong’, ‘Ratna Manggali’, ‘Human Zoo’ as well as operettas such as ‘Cinderella’, ‘Romeo and Juliet’, and the realist drama ‘Lakon di Layon’ by Hendra Utay. Recently establishing Teater Merah, she has gone on to direct various performances such as the monologue ‘Surat Kepada Setan’ by Putu Wijaya as well as performing with Teater Sastra Welang which played ‘Orang Kasar’ by Anton Chekov in Parade Teater Se Bali 2011.

Has Been Adam Young interest in music began when he started to experiment with unusual sounds in the basement of his house. Resident DJ Ferra Alony kebetulan merayakan ulang tahunnya pada malam itu, membuka sesi pertama bersama resident lainnya yaitu Wachitarica dan Nathalie. Setelah pembuka acara, rekan Ferra Alony, yaitu Arien Cathrine berkolaborasi bersama dengan seorang gitaris bernama Wanted dari Beage band. Sesi tiup lilin untuk mereka yang berulang tahun pun meramaikan suasana, mulai dari DJ Ferra Alony, hingga beberapa tamu yang diantaranya diajak untuk naik ke atas meja bar untuk tiup lilin. Pada puncak acara, bintang tamu DJ Verda RDJ dan DJ Nash yang merupakan resident dari Stadium meramaikan malam dengan sederetan set music mereka. Acara yang dikomando oleh MC IQBL dan DEE, ikut diramaikan oleh penampilan dari LUV Dancers dan LV C&C Models. Resident DJ Ferra Allony celebrated her birthday that night, and even though it was her special day, she still commanded the decks alongside fellow residents Wachitarica and Nathalie to kick off the weekend party in style. Following the warm up session DJ Arien Cathrine collaborated with guitarist Wanted from Beage band for a special electro rocking performance. The evenings main performance featured DJs Verda RDJ and Nash from Stadium went back to back to ignite the nights entertainment. Puncak acara menampilkan female dancers asal Belanda yang ditemani oleh Fabiola yang mengenakan kostum hutannya. Dari kemeriahan malam itu, terselip acara tiup lilin dari salah satu tamu yang hadir. Immigrant brought out its wild side with a jungle themed party complete with trees decorating almost every corner of the venue along with sexy Amazonian dancers. Resident DJs Toms, Oki Koro and Ical took turns on the deck supplying the beats before Fabiola and two female dancers from Holland enticed the crowd with their jungle dance.
