The times they are definitely a’changing. Not only have we seen the arrival of the wet season in the last couple of weeks, which promises to be wetter and longer than ever, if what’s happening further North with the wet seasons up there being any indicator. But also the amount of foreign acts and shows coming our way in the last year and continuing till now. How things have changed in that regard. Also another way it has changed recently is how we seem to have passed through a ‘from the old to the new’ phase with the nightlife clearly being focused on the Petitenget area as the only vibrant nightlife zone of Seminyak nowadays. That was proven last week with two shows, first at the new Mint with one half of the Layo and Bushwacka duo in the house on the Friday night that brought the house down, and then Hu’u bar’s Dennis Ferrer on the following night also pumping the jam all night long with another packed house. Why do these venues work and others don’t? It’s hard to say, but maybe giving them what they want is the issue. We’ll just have to keep an eye on it and see what happens during the next couple of months. Meanwhile, down in Kuta, the status quo prevails with the megaplex, soon to be super-club, Sky Garden pulling solid crowds seven days a week while most others are left scratching their head as to what to do. It’s always interesting to watch the evolution of the nightlife in this town, a nightlife that may sometimes stumble but never stops moving. Here are some recent comments from our new Beat VIP Card members. I Like the Beat magazine… Specially the food part and the little page about new stuff (electronic), which could be bigger… What I dislike is too much iklan for me… Almost every right pages are advertising… Philippe. Thanks for your comments. I suppose if 10.000 people subscribed we could get rid of the adverts, but that’s not likely, is it. The ads actually do have a lot of info in them too so it’s always a good idea to check them as you go through. Likes. I like knowing what’s happening ahead of time but I usually just check the website if I don’t have a magazine handy. I like reading about what I missed as well. I also like the new restaurant reviews. It would be good if you put restaurants in off the beaten track as well. There are so many good ones that people should know about, especially Indonesian and Chinese food. Fun pics are good. Reviews of DJ’s good. Bio’s of DJ’s good especially the ones you’ve never heard of. I like Jakarta section. Dislikes. Beat mag used to be everywhere. I live in Sanur side and I don’t see it as much over here. Don’t forget about us on the eastside! Jeff. We will check what is happening over there in Sanur but meanwhile you could subscribe to the beat daily and get the info delivered straight to your inbox every day or maybe even subscribe.

Scoop Bali Creative Festival 2011 25-27 November 2011 The Grand Bali Beach Sanur Bali Creative Festival is held to support the ‘Hundred Percent Love Indonesia Program’ by Indonesian President started in 2009. The main reason for the festival is to increase Indonesian product quality, to be able to compete with international products. This is the second year of Bali Creative Festival, and this year the main focus is the importance of creative collaboration, networking and also the empowerment of creative work. Because Bali is one of the world’s premium destinations in the world of tourism, the traditional art and culture is an important representation of creativity. Community and creative arts are also given priority to the participants of Bali Creative Festival. Several national icons are invited to Bali Creative Festival 2011, as well as some creative resource people.

Imagine All the People Not Being Hungry Hard Rock international is getting philanthropic with their “Imagine There’s No Hunger” campaign to combat childhood hunger and poverty. The John Lennon inspired event is supported by Yoko Ono Lennon, Hard Rock International and Why Hunger. The program plans to raise funds by selling limited edition John Lennon inspired merchandise through their online shop and stores around the world. The fashionably charitable items include a charity bracelet, a t-shirt, and a necklace. So don’t just imagine the end of childhood hunger, help out by buying one! www.hardrock.com

Sanur Village Festival 2011 The 6th edition of the annual Sanur Village Festival will commence once again from the 19th to 23rd of November, and this time will be held in a larger location, at Matahari Terbit Beach. Being slightly pushed back from previous years, the date and larger venue are all to coincide with this year’s National Flora Week. With this in mind, the theme for this year’s Sanur Festival will be ‘Flower Fiesta’. The usual music and art performances plus various culinary attractions that the Sanur Village Festival is known for will merge with floral spectacles to enjoy. Don’t miss the annual opening ceremony parade which is said to be bigger and better than before. For more information, contact Rahmadiana Tel: 286987/8710083

Scoop Triumphant Bali Chefs Young Balinese chef, Dias Raditya Widjaja and a team consisting of Helmy Wijaya, Mardhika Prasetya, and Nugraha Homan represented Bali splendidly by securing a silver medal and the highest point score for their performance at the Salon Culinaire Malaysia 2011 held in Kuala Lumpur. Representing the Bali Culinary Professional Association, the trio of chefs came to the competition with knives in hand and pots a blazing to beat out over 27 competitors from local and international hotels, restaurants and educational institutions. Culinaire Malaysia is the region’s largest culinary competition and is held in conjunction with the Food & Hotel Malaysia Exhibition (FHM). Held on a biannual basis, this year’s Culinaire Malaysia at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center attracted over 1,500 participating entries worldwide.

Commonwealth Bank Tournament of Champions 2011 The tournament is over and Ana Ivanovic has succeeded in defending her title. She came to Bali as one of two wildcard entries and won two straight sets, 6-3, 6-0 against Anabel Medina Garrigues in the tournament winning the grand prize of $210,000. On the first set, Medina gave her finest performance and made Ivanovic work really hard making her chase the ball. But in the second set, she lost her concentration. This win was special for Ivanovic because it’s right on her 24th birthday. She said that she’s so happy with this win but also a bit sad because this year’s tournament is the last one in Bali. Next year this event will be held in Bulgaria. She expressed hope that there will be a new tournament in Bali again in the future because she loves Bali and the people. Ivanovic believes that this win is an excellent start for her to regain her previous first place ranking. On the other hand, Anabel Medina Garrigues complimented her opponent and said that Ana was playing solid and was extremely difficult to beat during the match.

BALINALE 2011 15-20 November 2011 Galeria 21 Cineplex The Balinale 2011 International Film Festival will be held from November 15th to 20th at the Galeria 21 Cineplex in Bali Galeria Mall. This year, Balinale will host a special ASEAN film focus that aims to promote production in the region and expose the talents behind the local film industry. The festival also gives Indonesian filmmakers an opportunity to present their work to a global audience while networking with international filmmakers. This year, speakers will include veteran screenwriter and producer Gabrielle Kelly and the upand-coming filmmaker Mustafa Davis. Zee Avi Hu’u | Sun 13 Nov | 6PM sound like Acoustic Rock, Folk Hail From Malaysia

Has Been Zee Avi is a well known singer, songwriter, guitarist, and ukulele player from Malaysia that has achieved international success through YouTube, which seems to continue sparking new generations of stars. She was born in Miri, Sarawak, Malaysia and moved to Kuala Lumpur when she was a child. In September 2007, Avi posted a video of her first song “Swell Window” on YouTube for friends who had missed her first concert. The friend convinced her to leave the video online and soon she received a lot of positive feedback. This inspired her to upload more of herself on YouTube where she was discovered by Patrick Keeler of The Raconteurs, who passed the link to Ian Montone, the manager of The White Stripes, The Shins, The Raconteurs, and others. Montone then showed her music to Brushfire Records, a record company which is partly owned by Jack Johnson which immediately signed her. Her song “No Christmas For Me” was featured on Brushfire Records’s 2008 Christmas album. Then on May 19, 2009, her full self-titled debut album was released with her first single “Bitter Heart”. On the day of her album’s release, YouTube featured her on the front page in Spotlight: Music Tuesday. From June–August 2009, she toured the United States with Pete Yorn. The final concert on her first U.S. tour was at the Music Box at the Henry Fonda Theater in Hollywood, California. Avi’s song “Monte” was played in the second season finale of Private Practice. She is now based in the US. is Now Coming off a US and Asian tour and releasing a new album, ‘Ghostbird’ two months ago, she’ll be playing for the first time in a while in her own neck of the woods, including Indonesia. She will be playing first the show in Bali and later this month Jakarta. Get ready for a pleasant journey with her unique, soulful voice and style.

Ernesto erreyra

sounds like Latin groove, Northern minimalism, House

Hails From Agentina

Has Been Ernesto Ferreyra started on the decks early. After collecting records from the likes of Depeche Mode, Jean Michael Jarre and Pink Floyd, he discovered house music. After landing a job as a radio DJ at the age of 13 in his home town Cordoba, Agentina, he was spinning at under-18 discos at 14, and by 16 he was a fullfledged club DJ. After moving to Mexico City and then Montreal he moved into production of his own music driven by friendships with MUTEK artists and – in particular – Guillaume Coutu Dumont, who he records and performs with under the Chic Miniature moniker. He defines his sound as a mix of Latin groove and taut Northern minimalism and he says his records reflect a boundless curiosity about life, emotion and sensation. “I love jazz, soul, funk, Cuban rhythms, rivers, mountains… crazy movies like Tim Burton, history books – everything is an inspiration!” Ernesto’s crisp, seductive cuts appear on labels including MUTEK, Cadenza, Musique Risquée, Cyosure and Crosstown Rebels. His gigs around the world include Berlin’s Watergate and Panoramabar, Tokyo’s Yellow, Spazio 900 in Rome and Pacha, Ibiza. Is Now Ernesto Ferreyra will be brining his Latin house sounds to SOS next week for one night only. No doubt in his bag will be a selection of his forthcoming releases including remixes for Ben Watt’s Buzzin’ Fly imprint, ‘For Beaner’ on Thema Records and Ernesto’s debut album which is being brewed right now.

the BeatThiefs The BeatThiefs hail from the UK and are coming all the way from across several ponds to our little paradise to spin in our one and only super-club, Sky Garden. They had a huge hit with their single, “Umbungo”, and have been featured in numerous compilations from the likes of Defected, Ministry of Sound and Flaming. The Beat got to present a few questions to Henry Hacking, who makes up exactly 50% of the DJ duo and here’s how it turned out:

Is Henry Hacking your given name or were you some sort of evil computer genius? Hahaha, believe it or not, this is my real name. I’m good at the usual things on Computers. But becoming an evil computer genius just isn’t within my brain power! So, give me a little background about yourself as a human being and as a DJ. Well, people describe us as the ‘nice guys’ within the industry, we get along with most people and appreciate where we are and what we are doing. Divas we are not! I am also promotions and publicity manager for a cocktail lounge in my hometown of Cambridge called ‘Hidden Rooms’. So if anyone visits Cambridge, pop along and say hi! Your music can be merely labeled as “house”, but it seems like there is so much more to that. Please explain. From production to production we like to change our style. We’ve done more bass line vocal house remixes to really underground tech house. You’ll never really know what to expect from our releases. Some people think you should stick to one sound, but personally we

feel being a bit diverse and using different sounds in each remix helps to keep our productions evolving. Together with Tony Ryder, you form the BeatThiefs. Are you responsible for our missing issues? Yes, Beatmag is wicked and we apologize to the readers if they didn’t get hold of the latest issue... we just wanted it to ourselves. Have you ever been to Bali and what do you think of it? If you haven’t been, what are you expecting? I played at Sky Gardens on my own early in 2010 and there was a lot of changes happening to the venue. I can’t wait to see how it’s been finished and how much more I can get lost inside the venue! The clubbers are crazy and definitely up for a party, so to be here with my partner in crime will be fantastic! What is the most annoying thing you’ve ever seen at a venue you were performing at? An empty fridge in the DJ booth.

Hail From Singapore

Has Been NOMSTA is synonymous with quality dance music for as far as his career has stretched. He embraces a variety of musical genres, from jazz to hip hop, from house to techno. He unites different music scenes, backgrounds, even eras, to come together as one – he essentially separates the cutting edge from the norm. His music career started from the record labels, and then he went into promotions, management, and events production and now as a DJ sharing his tastefully wicked music with the masses. NOMSTA has played alongside big names like house legend Roy Davis Jr (US), Australia Ministry of Sound’s electrobreaks master Kid Kenobi & MC Shureshock, and many more. As one of the pioneers when dance music rose in popularity in the 90s, he has marketed cutting-edge labels from Ninja Tunes to Carl Cox in his home town of Singapore and kick started the nu beats movement in Asia by organizing a series of nu jazz events. His taste is verified by his participation in tastemaker events such as The Good Vibrations Festival, Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Festival and his regular contributions to Singapore’s popular FM radio Lush 99.5. is Now In addition to his busy schedule, Nomsta is still making his way to perform at Woo Bar. Be prepared for a good dose of funk and soul mashing with other genres of music. It’ll be interesting to see what tricks and tracks he has for the Woo basement crowd.

Hails From Jakarta, Indonesia

Have Been Gigi is one of the most well known bands in Indonesia. The name ‘Gigi’, actually means teeth and was coined after band members laughed so hard at the prospect of being named Ogangutan, which was suppose to be the band’s name. Founded in March 1994 by Aria Baron, Thomas Ramdhan, Ronald Fristianto, Dewa Budjana and Armand Maulana, the musical group has existed in the Indonesian music scene for more than 17 years - a huge achievement. This group has been reconstructed a number of times but original members, Thomas, Budjana and Armand still perform, while the drummer has change a couple of times and now features a new man on the kit, Gusti Hendy. Although Gigi always stays on their music track, pop rock, they also had a religious album which was released in 2004. Gigi has collaborated with big names like Billy Sheehan from Mr. Big and Indra Lesmana and was one of the great influences behind the creation of this very magazine. After seeing a concert of Gigi some twelve years ago in Bali, the original minds behind the beat decided to go ahead and publish an entertainment magazine on this island because their show was so good. are Now They were entertaining then and continue to be one of the most dynamic bands in Indonesia. Gigi will perform at Akasaka Bali on November 23rd. So, get into Denpasar to check out this great band. If you haven’t seen them before this is a good chance to check ’em out.

kahitna

Hard Rock Cafe | WED 23 nov | 9pm Sounds Like Pop

Hails From Bandung, Indonesia

Have Been Kahitna was founded in 1986 by Yovie Widianto. Aside from Yovie who plays piano and keyboard, Kahitna’s core is a trio of vocalists who include Mario Ginanjar, Hedi Yunus and Carlo Saba. The rest of the band is made up of Dody Isnaini on bass, Harry Suhardiman on percussion, D. Bambang Purwono on keyboard, Budiana Nugraha on drum, and Andrie Bayuaji on guitar. The majority of their songs are catchy love songs which are arranged to catch the ear of any sentimental soul out there. The genre is pop but sometimes they blend in some jazzy tunes, latin vibes and other musical influences and with a full band have put on big shows all over the nation. Their hit songs, Sebut Saja Cerita Cinta, Seandainya Aku Bisa Terbang, Cantik, Tak Sebebas Merpati, Setahun Kemarin, Andai Dia Tahu, Permasuriku, Menikahimu are all Indonesian hits. Recently they had a huge celebratory concert at the Plenary Hall in Jakarta for their 25th anniversary with the launch of the band’s biography, which was a resounding success. are Now Kahitna has been in Indonesian music scene for 25 years now and still continue to pull big crowds. With that long period of time in this business, there is definitely something special about this band. Don’t miss their live performance, be there and let Kahitna put you in a nostalgic pop-esque frame of mind.

Twisted Childhood Halloween

Dead Celebrity Halloween

alloween was young and well for Love in Tent’s Twisted Childhood Halloween party where the general public were allowed to dress up as their favorite characters from their youth. DJ SukaMu was dressed like Destro from G.I. Joe and he definitely gets my vote for the best costume I’ve seen this Halloween season. With all the crazy costumes it would definitely be a Halloween that would’ve haunted my very sheltered childhood.

ikon had a little twist on the whole Halloween theme this year with their Dead Celebrity party. Patrons of Eikon were encouraged to dress up like their favorite dead celebrity with a few people wearing the attire of a celebrity whose pulse no longer beats and skin has turned cold. Big ups to the decoration and the great atmosphere at the event where DJ Alvin and Manda kept the undead very lively.

zigo held a very special event on Saturday night with the Japanese audio/visual artists Eggore performing a very beautifully abstract show. Eggore’s conceptually different style was in form of theatre, art, and music. They played in a dark room where a guitarist and a man on a sampler deck played rhythmic music as an artist/actor painted a black wall with fluorescent paint. The show contained a story with a very important message. A truly amazing artistic performance by a very brave and unique set of performers.

i Ai Pi’s wet and wild Halloween was just about as Halloweeny as they come with a bunch of people showing up in costume. The costumes were particularly scary at this party with just about everyone dressed as some sort of evil vampire, monster, kuntilanak (Indonesian vampire), etc. Everyone wanted a piece of the prizes given out for best costume. The house band and DJs played some rocking beats and a fashion show was shown as the crowd got wet and wild.

A friendly face in the night life scene, Dimas is the man behind those prescriptions frames and that million dollar smile and now he’s hu’u bar’s club manager. The Beat humbly catches up with the man for a chat just before he prepares for another night of festivities. beatmag.com 082

Was it your dream to work in the night life scene? Not at all, I started at a moment when I was just helping out a friend who had one of his first DJ line ups in Indonesia. My job was to bring the crowd to the event and it all came from there. So when did you really feel like it was your kind of thing? Perhaps the hangout times with friends back in Jakarta in 1999. We put our heads and energy into this party organizing company called 1945 music factory. Back then, DJ Romy, Naro and Riri were still under one banner, 1945MF, and we started to throw parties in Jakarta clubs. As more and more parties came, I’ve been able to enjoy everything ever since. Having responsibilities in a club must have different time demands compared to day work. How do you keep it balanced? To manage two important things: good time management and good sleeping hours. How do you build your mood at parties when you’re exhausted?

Some events/parties offer something more to remember, any of them have more meaning to you? My birthday party back in May this year was awesome, sponsored by Marlboro. I never thought friends from outside Bali would travel so far and be there just for me. My 31st birthday party was unforgettable. What’s your recipe for good party promotion? Inviting your friends would be the first thing, then the word of mouth about the event will operate by itself. It’s like friends inviting more friends. An advert in the beat always helps, too, hehehe. There are a lot of new places in Kuta, Seminyak, etc. Some stay and some go after a certain period of time. From how you see it, what kind of places make the distance? From what I can see, the venues that survive are those with good guest and staff management. Shout out to Beatmag. Thank you for Beatmag for always informing us of all the great events.

The only condition to perform well would be after a good power nap. I think a power nap can produce enough energy to perform well in the evening.

Bali Boy Pizza

Moments with salvador Like father, like son, Nico is a Bali baby who is off to new horizons following in his fathers footsteps. “Our mission is to have a world class menu that will stand on its own, comparable to any Italian restaurant in the world by delivery. All we are saying is give Pizza Boy a chance. Hey, I know that song.

S.B. You’re in the oven. N.W. Ha, my name is Nicholas White, born in Melbourne, nineteen seventy three, came over to Bali with my mum a few years later, went back to Melbourne and told my dad that he should go to Bali on holiday. He loved it, came back and sold just about everything, back to Bali and started the Blue Ocean Restaurant with a couple of his mates - history in the making. Ha, one of the things they had there was pretty good pizza. S.B. That was the first of its kind in Bali, is that correct? N.W. There was nothing before, and I mean nothing, zero, no Double Six, riding bikes on the beach, real cowboy stuff. I kept coming every summer, hung out at the restaurant, played with the pet monkeys, getting my G string and playing racket ball. Those were the days - nine to fifteen years old. My schooling was normal, college at Wesley, got into the fashion business for a while, but got over the consumerism business of it all, I wanted something more that I could sink my teeth into (laughter), pun intended, something that would grow, a bit more future to it.

beatmag.com 084

S.B. When did the Pizza Boy concept come into play? N.W. Dad had a great house in Seminyak, that was in the action, and you could get everything you wanted here, food wise, then a few years ago I moved out to Canggu and there was nowhere to get pizza delivered, never mind anything else, and so I considered building an oven in the house and doing deliveries of pizza from there. I finally decided to look for a good space along the main road, Jl. Raya Kerobokan and here we are, just about everyone goes past here, location, location. S.B. Where did the idea of pizza come from? Have you had any prior training in the culinary market? N.W. When I was younger I worked quite a bit in Italian restaurants and had a lot of Italian friends as well, plus Melbourne in general having a fantastic Italian culinary scene. Also I was living with a couple of guys who contributed a lot to the Italian market, ha, surrounded. I love Italian food and I love going to restaurants, eating something and going home and recreating it. S.B. And so, a self educated chef? N.W. A hobby chef, always watching to see what goes into my food. S.B. Sounds passionate? N.W. Very passionate about food, I love the simplicity of Italian food, the flavours and the freshness. S.B. So growing up in Bali, did you have a good following when you opened up Pizza Boy? N.W. Well into the locals, when I go out to Potato Head, La Plancha, Woo Bar, it’s “hey, yo, Pizza Boy, I’m your best customer”. I’m known as Pizza Boy now, not Nico anymore (laughter), I’m even introduced as Pizza Boy. S.B. How long have you been in business? N.W. We started December 2010, we just opened the doors, we didn’t pump the marketing and we’re more of a delivery service right now, fast and hot. S.B. Do you think you have an edge here on the competitive side? N.W. We’ve researched the market and we’ve come up with something that satisfies your Italian

market, New York or American pizza lovers, also the Aussies, and we cater to the Indonesian market as well. My experience here, knowledge of the Balinese pallet, we’ve got everyone coming here. The menu is interesting, pizza wise, it’s not your everyday pizza, and you can have thin or thick pizza, choose whatever ingredients you want, seafood, potatoes, on and on. Our pastas are out of this world. In the not to distant future we will be introducing paninis, burgers and hot dogs, parmativas, we do an amazing chicken in our oven, But the core is pizza. We got that right now and so we’re ready to expand. S.B. When you say ‘we’re ready to expand’, other locations? N.W. Yeah, other sites, other locations. We’ll go to the moon given a chance (laughter), the location will be somewhere central. Along with my partner, we’ve got a good team and we plan to open up Pizza Boy all over Asia, beginning with Bali, then Jakarta, Singapore and Thailand. By the way, I delivered my first pizza (laughter) in the rain under my poncho. S.B. Your philosophy of being? N.W. Eat, drink and be merry.

Road Rage? What Road Rage?

I

saw a strange thing this morning. Waiting to turn right at a crossroads, a local man on his bike next to me started shaking his fist at the three cars coming across from the right who had decided to run the red light. However, it wasn’t the three tailgating cars that was strange, I was more intrigued by the man angrily gesticulating at the bemused drivers. In the five years that I’ve been driving in Bali, I’ve seen more minor traffic offences that one could shake a fist at, but the standard protocol in such situations has always been to shrug benignly and drive off. “There’s no road rage in Bali” people would say, but that would appear to be changing. Chronic traffic jams, dodgy road planning, nightmare U-turns on the bypass, potholes the size of the Grand Canyon and a baffling desire amongst most drivers to get from A to B in the quickest and most dangerous way all add up to one big pressure cooker on the roads of this increasingly busy little island (don’t even get me started on those massive tourist buses). So, for the uninitiated, here’s a set of useful pointers that will hopefully keep you out of the Emergency room. 1: If you really must drive a motorbike, wear a decent helmet. There are two good reasons for this. One is that the police are less likely to stop you and confiscate the contents of your wallet, and the other is that it will stop all the inside bits of your head from being broken should you have the misfortune to fall off. 2: Remember Steve McQueen evading the Nazis on an Enfield Bullet in the Great Escape? You are not Steve McQueen evading the Nazis on an Enfield Bullet in the Great Escape. Your 125cc rented scooter is neither cool, fast or stable. Try to remember that and just cruise, making sure to stick to the left hand side allowing the nutters to overtake (tarmac permitting of course). 3: Never look anyone in the eye. This is a good local trick which seems to absolve drivers from any wrongdoing. This works on policemen too – if you can’t see them, they won’t be able to see you. Trust me it works. 4: The single most important component of your vehicle (bike or car) is the horn. Use it. A lot. 5: Never ever yank the front brake as you’re going around a corner – particularly if there’s loose gravel about (which basically is everywhere) unless you

beatmag.com 090

want your next trip to be the skin graft clinic. 6: For the love of god at least wear a T-shirt – even a Bintang vest if that’s how you choose to live your life. This is not necessarily a safety one nobody wants to see your sweaty sunburnt torso. 7. There’s plenty of time to chat over a nice sunset Bintang, so do everyone a favour and don’t attempt a conversation with your buddy on another bike. 8. If you’re stopped at a red light, keep your front wheel behind the (usually faded) white line. This is a classic police sting operation. 9. Crossing the busy bypass or attempting a U-turn is a terrifying prospect, so do as the locals do and just inch out until the oncoming traffic can no longer swerve around you and is forced to stop. 10. Resist the urge to drive after drinking. At the risk of being called a massive hypocrite here, driving after a heavy night out is really not a good idea. Taxis really aren’t that expensive. 11. Switch off your indicators after a turn. Unlike a car, the indicator lights on a motorbike don’t self-cancel, meaning that half of Bali are driving around with indicators flashing incorrectly.

It looks good, but more importantly, and the most surprising thing of all, is the quality of the food they serve. There are a large number of seafood items and meat options on the menu. According to chef, Dean Fisher, all the seafood comes fresh from the Jimbaran fish markets every day. Hainan Chicken Rice For those of you who like to enjoy delicious of Chinese cuisine, all you have to do is just head down to Aviary restaurant for a true culinary experience. A district in China, Hainan, is famous for its Hainan Chicken Rice (45K), it consists of poached chicken with iceberg lettuce and kyuri (Japanese cucumber) served with ginger rice, clear soup, chili sauce and ginger sauce. The unique thing about this dish is the chef’s magical touch. To prepare the dish, chicken is combined with herbal ingredients; especially coriander leaves. The method of cooking is quite simple, you boil it with special ingredients, but the hard part is the timing of the cooking. Depending on how big the chicken is, it should take around 25 minutes to cook. The timing of cooking to get the best Hainan chicken is by far the most challenging part. If you boil it too long, the taste will be all wrong. The best place to enjoy this delicacy is actually Singapore, but you don’t need to go that far. Hang over helpers

Ok, so you don’t have a will of steel. You’ve had a little too many drinks last night and now you’re dealing with a horrible headache from hell. I’ve rounded up some hangover cures to get you feeling like your fine self again... Avoid, avoid, avoid!

It sounds silly but the best way to cure a hangover is to avoid getting one in the first place. But if its too late, you can make the next morning somewhat pleasant if... •You drink on a full stomach to slow alcohol absorption. •Consume full fat yoghurt to give the stomach a protective lining. •Take a vitamin called milk thistle before you drink to protect the liver from damage. •Take a decent dose of Vitamin B and C to prepare the body from all the nutrients it’s going to lose over the night.

Once you’ve started

If you’ve already started drinking (lots), not all is lost - there are still a few things you can do. Try alternating hard and soft drinks or just drink slower. Also remember to drink to your size, as there is no point trying to keep up with the girls on the local rugby team. If you want to give your head the best chance in the morning, there are a number of drinks best avoided: sparkling drinks like champagne or rum and coke will take the booze straight to your head, as will cognac, brandy, whisky and red wine. On the other hand - gin and vodka will be kinder to the head. Try Vodka sodas as they are low in calories and easy on the body (as far as alcohol goes).

beatmag.com 0106

Rehydrate

We know it, but how often do we ignore it? Alcohol is a diuretic, meaning that pounding headaches and dry, fuzzy mouths are partly due to dehydration. Drinking water will help speed your recovery. After a drinking session, try to drink a pint of water before going to bed. If you wake with a hangover, sip water little and often all day and try drinking an isotonic drink or better, a fresh coconut! Stay away from coffee and drinking bloody marys the next morning. They will just make it worse.

Take your vitamins

Just like the money you spend on the booze, vitamins B and C are your body’s currency and oh my will you feel poor in the morning without them. B vitamins are quickly used up as the body processes alcohol in the body. If you don’t have a dose of B vitamin supplements then just stick to Berocca. Take 1g of antioxidant vitamin C three times on the day to swipe all those free radicals.

The Cannes Film Festival may have ended all the way back in May this year, but both the Palme d’Or and best director winners have recently arrived at the DVD shop in near perfect quality. Cannes is notorious for awarding movies that are more artistic than entertaining so how do these two winners fare? Well, let us explain.

The Tree of Life

This film managed to win the Palme d’Or which pretty much means the French thought that this was the most amazing movie of the year. Well, I watched the film and although I do see why some people truly love a film like this, I also see how the other 90% of people think it’s the most bloated waste of time ever. Although the cinematography is beautiful, to be fair, this movie requires a lot of patience. Terrence Malick, the director of the film, is known for his extremely abstract way of presenting his films to the audience and Tree of Life is 139 minutes of non-linear story telling that switches back and forth between the formation of the universe, a middle aged man, and most prominently, scenes from his childhood in suburban Texas. The actors, namely Brad Pitt give an extremely heartfelt performance as a disciplinarian father figure that is juxtaposed against a very affectionate one that might be Oscar worthy if the film was just more palatable. The bottom line is while some of you might find this film to be ground-breaking work, most of our Beat readers will no doubt want to skip this one for something a little more enjoyable.

Drive

Like the Palme d’Or winner above, this film also requires a bit of patience as the plot progresses, however this Best Director winner boasts an awesome soundtrack coupled with some extremely realistic action scenes that’ll impress you with both its believability and sheer level of violence. The film centers on a solitary figure (Ryan Gosling) who is a stunt driver by day and a getaway driver by night. He befriends a neighbor who quickly becomes his love interest leading to multiple conflicts. The dialogue in the film matches the main character’s laconic style. Drive makes up for lack of dialogue with very well composed cinematography accompanied with retro electro music. I would definitely recommend this movie for it’s extremely well thought out character development, visual style, and insane action scenes. Don’t watch this movie if you consider yourself impatient or hate extreme violence. RS

The Horrors

I

TKOL RMX 1234567 his album is a remix, or perhaps a creative complement from the previous ‘The King Of Limbs’ album. Just when people thought that it was still a good album yet less creative, this new remix album might be a good answer to muse both fans and critiques. Thick broken melody, syrupy synth, and galumph beats are heavy and beautiful. ‘Bloom’ remix by Harmonic 313, was like a second soul of the original song, with glitch chug loops and some aquatic horror ambiance. At least this album is enjoyable, in other words, it got me to a higher level of contentment than the The King Of Limbs.

Skying

f you need something like The Smiths or Morrissey, The Horrors is the new UK chart climbing palemelody band to listen to. Dark wave, post punk or whatever you call it, Skying landed well into that 80’s heart of yours. Easiest to love is ‘Still Life’ and ‘I Can See Through You’, with catchy repetitive pentatonic slow chants and vocals. These songs are an earful to listen to. Some say their previous album ‘Primary Colours’ was the start of their good music, but I think it’s possible to love The Horrors just by listening to this very album.

Indonesian Surfing Championship Ends 2011 in Style T

he Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championship Tour ended its 2011 competitive season with a prom of sorts for participants at the W Retreat and Spa.

The dress code for the event was strictly formal with just about everyone wearing a black suit or a formal gown and it felt very much like a grand ball with everyone all gussied up. The round tables representing the different organizations and companies who have supported the ISC were laid out and guests were merry with excellent food, drink, and the general contentment that comes with a sense of accomplishment. Tipi Jabrik took the stage for a speech that chronicled the very humble beginnings of the ISC when a Rp 30 million grant was provided by Quiksilver to start the championship in 2004. He was awarded a generous ovation after recognizing all the sponsors and participants for making the tour what it is today. Winners were announced with a video montage of each participant painting an epic and sometimes very nostalgic look back at the 2011 surf season. I wasn’t there for any of it, but the superbly shot and edited video made me feel like part of the action, well, the highlights at least. Overall, the event showed how the ISC has matured though the years and has grown to an international standard of surfing and can really be called the “real dream tour”. n “Spiritual Dialogues” Supada explores his art sense with the theme of meditation, a theme that stands at the heart of Hindu and Buddhist philosophy, religion and art. Ironically although a dialogue (an act that requires interchange between at least two parties) would seem an impossible task while engaging a discipline that demands solitary contemplation, in practice meditation sparks inner dialogue as well as one with the greater whole – the Cosmos if you like. Indeed, its aim is the obliteration of the wall of illusion between the natural and supernatural worlds resulting in unification, an experience known as enlightenment or realization in the west or moksa and nirvana in the east.

his exhibition questions the relevance of spirituality, inner space and the contemplation of the artist within the visual work of art. Quite often we hear that contemporary art is so near the works that it is experimental. The work from Bonuz this time is more a present abstraction than the estuary of inner experience. It brings an impression of an imaginary space. Tonyraka Art Gallery embraces Putu Sudiana Bonuz as an offer to encourage diversity of expression of Balinese art, especially on how art is related to the daily practice of an artist’s spirit. About 13 works of painting and a installation will be exhibited.
