When it comes to celebrity stars and politicos, Bali was the centre of the world last week with first, a visit from none other than superceleb, love her or hate her, Paris Hilton. Then later in the week, the heads of state from all over the region, including Barack Obama, came for the Asean and East Asia summits. Talk about busy. At some stage, it was impossible to even get out of the house, let alone down the road. In the popularity stakes, it must be declared that Paris won hands down on our website, at least. We presume that Obama was having more of an effect on the bigger global picture than Paris, but we did love to see her partying around the island and having a great time. It seems strange how some people get so upset about her doing that (according to comments on beatmag.com, anyway), since most people on the planet do enjoy the opportunity of having a good time, and why not? There’s nothing wrong with that, according to everyone here at the beat magazine, in any case. And as we said on the web, it was more great publicity for Bali having both Paris Hilton and the Politicos in town last week, but let’s get that underpass sorted out quick or we’ll be gridlocked quicker than you can say – Paris Hilton is a Tweet! Well, lo and behold, we’re closing in on Christmas again. How fast did that year pass? It’s a worry, but let’s keep it rockin’. There’s plenty on as we move into December with visiting national and international performers on the way to your favourite venue. Check inside for all the details and keep it cool and keep it clean, especially all you schoolies folk in town. We’ll love you for that and get you home in one piece.

Scoop Bali Creative Festival, Nov 25-27 After the inaugural event last year, the annual Bali Creative Festival is back again. This weekend from November the 25th until the 27th the festival that focuses mainly on youth creativity will be held at the Grand Bali Beach Complex, Sanur. Ayip and Rudolf Dethu of Bali Creative Community and the duo behind Bali Creative Festival, explained that the festival has three main concepts which are; Creative Talks where there will be discussions and workshops, special presentations (Pecha Kucha), stand up comedy, and movie screening, a Creative Stage where there will be bands and music coaching; and Creative Display where there will be exhibitions and art installations. The festival will present all the best local creative entities like Popo Danes, Janet DeNeefe, Moch Satrio Welang, I Gede Ardika, Prof. Dr. I Gede Pitana, Ray Bangsawan, Bali Blogger, etc for Creative Talks, then Superman Is Dead, Ayu Laksmi, Navicula, The Hydrant, Nymphea, Painful by Kisses, Bali Puisi Blues, Khatulistiwa, and more, for the Creative Stage, and Little Tree, Jaringan Ekowisata Desa, Nafka, Bogbog, adgi, Lingkara, etc, in the Creative Displays. Scissor Sisters to Perform in Bali New York glam rock/pop rock band and billboard chart toppers the Scissor Sisters are due to perform in Bali on January 7, 2012. The band describe themselves to have been “spawned by the scuzzy, gay nightlife scene of New York” and are known for their extravagantly fabulous stage performances. The band came to prominence with their disco remake of Pink Floyd’s ‘Comfortably Numb’ in 2003, and have had a number of hit tracks including “Laura”, “I Don’t Feel Like Dancing “, “Take Your Mama”, “Mary” and “Filthy/Gorgeous”. Band members consist of Jake Shears and Ana Matronic as vocalists, Del Marquis as lead guitar/bassist Babydaddy as multi instrumentalist, and Randy Real on drums. Lead singer Jake Shears is known to put on lively performances, greatly influenced by his previous vocation… stripping. In 2004, Bono of U2 said that the Scissor Sisters were “the best pop group in the world”. They are due to play at the Hard Rock Bali after performing in Hong Kong and Singapore.

Desyn Masiello MINT | wed 1 deC Roots: Desyn was a teenager in the UK when dance music exploded into the party scene and can be described as a vinyl junkie. Since turning professional 10 years ago, he has played at just about every mega club and major festival in the world. Sound: House. Where you might have heard of him: He was on the front cover of DJ Magazine on their January 2010 issue and appeared in their “Top 100 DJs” three times, 2005, 2006 and 2007. John Digweed has described him as “the man that never sleeps” when introducing him on his radio show. He has released five DJ mix CD compilations on labels like Balance, Ministry of Sound, Bedrock and Yoshitoshi. Desyn has recently appeared at Burning Man, Vision and Cielo in the US, Pirates of Cadenza in Amsterdam and Trilogy in Dubai. His non-stop world tour continues to Bali this week. Why see him: Some DJs are known for their production skills, Desyn is known for his pure DJing prowess. He meticulously handles the decks and his sets are the DJ equivalent of a laser guided bomb, precise and explosive. Has Been Teuku Adi Fitrian who is better known as Tompi started his music career as a singer while he was still in college but he got his big break when he joined Bali Lounge, an ethnic modern band, and made an album with them titled Bali Lounge in 2004. Not long after that, he decided to pursue a solo career and released his first solo album in 2005 called T. His unique and jazzy voice made his popularity star rise quickly and he released his second album on 2007 Playful, which was dedicated to his child who was born that same year. On that album, he remade a famous children song ‘Balonku’ and gave it a jazzy edge, Tompi style. He likes to explore many genres of music and it shows on his latest album Tak Pernah Setengah Hati where he added dangdut and rap vibes into some of the songs. Beside his solo career, now he also has a side project with Glenn Fredly and Sandhy Sandoro called ‘Trio Lestari’. Is Now Tompi will perform at Hard Rock University which will be held on December 7th. He always gives his maximum performance at every show. I definitely believe it was destiny for me to play music and exhibit/share my blends on my take of music in the world. At parties or just by making mix tapes. That’s how it all started for me and that’s how it will always be until I’m not able to press play anymore! I’m actually reading these questions on my BB, lying down, legs tucked up with my right foot resting over my left knee. My foot is directly to the left of my phone, so I guess I would use my bare foot to stomp on them zombies! What’s the wildest thing you’ve ever seen from behind the decks? I’ve seen quite a few things go down while I’ve played, but the “wildest” thing I’ve ever seen or experienced firsthand from behind the decks at one of my parties was watching one of my hip hop idols walk in, bust a lil groove and come up to freestyle a bit on the mic while I played some instrumentals! They were nominated in the ‘Breakthrough Producers’ category at the 2005 House Music Awards. On 2010, he decided to go solo under the name Parrish James and remixes songs by many big names like Rihanna, Brunette, Christine Aguilera, Janet Jackson, Pussycat Dolls, Deborah Cox & Leela James. As a DJ, he’s been travelling all over the world, from Ibiza, London, Sydney, Colombia, Seoul, basically a ton of cities in six different continents. Jakarta was represented by the band Divide who were followed by Sky on Eye which were also from Singapore. The show was overwhelmingly positive with a little something for everyone. avone was the scene of a laugh riot as Dennis and Sam Mccool delivered some truly righteous jokes. It all started a little after 8 pm with a mystery man from some Middle Eastern country. Thankfully, he only tore the house down with his jokes. Next was Dennis who warmed up a mostly older crowd to the insanity that was Sam Mccool. Mccool was able to do just about every impersonation from around the globe and only had to offend a handful of guest doing so. I had dinner, I laughed, I left satisfied. Hope to see these comedy gigs again.

reat acoustic shows can be few and far between on the island and we were pretty excited about seeing this one after writing last edition’s Here Now. It wasn’t quite a sunset show. The band didn’t hit the stage until about nine but thankfully David J was on hand to spin a little hip hop for us. Once Zee Avi did hit the stage, her soulful Norah Jonesesque voice totally captivated the audience. Combine that with the bands broad use of instrumentation, including the sitar, made for a very esoteric experience. Some of Avi’s solo performances with minimal band support let her voice shine through and were the most memorable of her set. ou could say that Mint, a new club on Jalan Petitenget, opened just at the right time. As Double Six Club, Syndicate, Bacio and Deja’vu were all closing down on Seminyak’s Blue Ocean Beach, Mint was opening its doors. The venue began like most – slowly – while it was finding its feet, but now they are on a roll, filling with punters most nights of the week and blowing the scales on weekends. The Beat spoke with Mac Pedari, consultant manager at Mint, who has been instrumental in getting the show on the road. There are many factors in making a club a success or not. So Mac, why do you think Mint has suddenly come to the fore? Well, since the Double Six Street area has quietened down, we’re now left with Kuta and Seminyak and now Seminyak is Jalan Petitenget. Also, since many of the other bars are now getting old in this area, it was time for a new one to come along. The music, the venue itself, the staff, there are a lot of reasons and issues that have combined now and we say god bless. Do you get the feeling the stars are lining up now in your favour? We’re making them line up, actually. That’s what my job is, to make it happen. There’s no coincidence, nothing is. There’s a formula I suppose? Absolutely. It takes time but we will get there. I’ve been at Mint for a month now and so far it’s going well. We are blessed to have a very professional team and they will show their true form by the Grand Opening. We’re looking forward to the grand opening which will be in December. How do you go about training the staff exactly? Staff management is important and we give them training three to four hours a day. They are already well trained, but they need to step it up. How about the food at Mint? You have a restaurant, right? The food is amazing. We have a fine kitchen. There are different styles of food on offer and people should come down and try it for themselves. From 5pm to 12 midnight, except Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights when food is being served from 8 pm till 4 am.
Feature What’s happening before the Grand Opening can be held? Well, we’re still constructing. This past month, as I mentioned before, has been all about training the staff, fixing the drinks, the menus, the interior/ exterior designs, which takes time of course. Hopefully, we’ll finish it by next week. That’s the deadline anyway. And what kind of finishing touches are you putting on the place? I think it’s best that everybody comes down to see for themselves. It seems like many people are already heading to Mint. The Layo and Bushwacker show a couple of weeks ago pulled a very large crowd. The thing we loved about that night, and with all due respect to Layo and Bushwacker, it was all great, but the best thing was that Mint presented itself. It was Mint’s night. The next night the people were back again and they continue coming back. Sure they liked Layo and Bushwacker, but it also meant that the people are now coming because of the venue. They enjoy the venue, even though it’s a little hot right now. We’re allowed to mention that? used to hate them.You know the type, foreign ‘Indo foodies’ complaining that “oooo this sambal isn’t spicy enough”, or purposely going out to find a bowl of local rujak.“Idiots,” I’d think, before disappearing off to the nearest sandwich shop. “Indonesia has given us the nasi and the mie goreng, and that’s about it”.
There are plenty of places, for the unenlightened to the seasoned Indo food veteran, dotted around town, but Ketupat restaurant on Jl. Dewi Sri has to be the granddaddy of them all, offering authentic Indonesian specialties from all over the archipelago – from Lombok to Kalimantan, Java to Sulawesi and beyond – it’s all here and it’s all properly enak.
Then something inevitable happened. I discovered beef rendang. And sambal matah. And ayam betutu. And kerupuk. And… well, you get the point. As the old saying goes, ‘if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em’, and now it’s me guzzling up the extra sambal or getting genuinely excited about a few sticks of sate kambing (look it up).
Strolling in through the exquisite wooden joglo pavilion of Ketupat we’re warmly greeted by the smiley waiter. Clearly anticipating that we’re not just here for the spring rolls, he shows us over to one of the larger tables out back next to the pool and leaves us to peruse the enormous menus over a couple of refreshing ice teas. Appetizers, soups,

Food noodles, sate, seafood, duck, curries, stir fries – the choices are all a little bewildering (mainly because I want to eat it all), so we decide to go for maximum assortment. Tapas, Indonesian style. First up was a plate of the fish and tofu ‘perkedel’ cakes, along with the insanely morish crunchy Javanese style peanut crackers and the tuna and basil ‘panada’ puffs (all 26k) from the starter list. Next up, the table filling nasi kuning (66k) arrives, featuring an assortment of tender beef rendang, crunchy tempe, corn fritters and plenty more tucked around the generous volcano of fragrant yellow rice in the centre. Keen to sample a few more different tastes, we get stuck in to a bowl of tangy sour mango infused sambal tappa (17k) on the side, as well as a stick or two of the Balinese specialty sate lilit tuna (83k), which in this case is wrapped around a lemongrass stalk and presented on a small clay barbeque. The feast draws to a close with a nibble of some coconut ice cream and a few slices of palate cleansing watermelon, and we leave Ketupat full

THE WORLD IS MY STAGE What inspired you to become a performing artist? Life and all that has happened to me has led me to become a performing artist. The audience, rather than a deliberate attempt by me, has created this title. I guess it also has a lot to do with what I have explored during events of my life. Whether it's work or self-growth, healing and the desire to keep improving as a human being and follow the true calling of my heart, higher purpose, and my passion. With my over 20 years of practicing and cultivating the essence of White Crane martial arts, and a lot of complementary training in Butoh, Javanese dance essence, meditation and healing. Instead of writing a poem, I use my body to express differently‌ through motion.
Where do the ideas for your shows come from and what are the themes you explore? From my own direct experience of the truth and a deep desire to give birth to something I call more than just an idea. I explore energy transmission through movements, my high respect of daily ritual, the human soul, ancient wisdom, and how we have come into this life time. It is like a body that moves through time and space as a poem written on a piece of paper, the movements can be seen and felt like a mudra, but again it's not for me to say. The music is minimal, so there is little distraction and the stimulation is internal. My costumes are very simple, and I highly value the importance of proper lighting, although I don't always have the luxury and luck to create it due to many technical and financial reasons. I perform the dance of life in the hope it will somehow inspire audiences to catch or connect with a glimpse of their own life essence. But again, it's an open book. What would you call your type of performance and why?

I try to avoid saying “universal dance� as it is not just a dance. I feel I am a messenger in which my body is a tool. To deliver the message I simply connect to the space where I am and the space I create on stage. I do not call my performance any specific 'type', but rather leave it to the audience/viewer to experience what they need to. This is not about me. It's about a synergy of what's in the theater or the space and surrounding where I perform, between myself as a vehicle and the audience. In that way I do not 'frame' a fixed concept or idea and respectively give my audience the complete freedom and a lot of space to experience for their own discoveries or even contemplation.

Feel: What was most remarkable about Jerami was the attentiveness and seemingly telepathic abilities of their therapists. They managed to feel out where I needed the most attention and almost instantly knew when one muscle group was affected by another when being massaged. Ingredients: For the body massage treatment, we chose our own oil which included lavender to energize the body, rose to balance, or green tea to relax. Especially the Shirodara healing treatment, special herbal oil from India was chosen depending on your hair condition: Phita oil for damaged hair, Kapha oil for sensitive, and Patha oil for normal hair.

illenium salah satu klab yang berlokasi di kawasan kota, kini merubah konsep genre musik dari funky kota atau funkot menjadi musik Selatan. Dalam rangka itulah, klab ini menggelar seri konsep barunya, dengan menghadirkan sederetan DJ untuk tampil, dan sebagai pembuka dalam seri bulan November adalah Meichan. Sang vokalis dari duo Maia ini, kian melengkapi kualitasnya sebagai musisi dengan terjun sebagai DJ. Sebelumnya, resident DJ Millenium mulai menghangatkan suasana dengan menggulirkan set genre progressive, breaks, dan juga dutch. Selepas tengah malam, Meichan pun tampil ke atas panggung dengan terlebih dahulu bernyanyi yang dilanjutkan dengan tampil di atas dek DJ dan berhasil membuat pengunjung lebih merapat ke depan. Selain memainkan perangkat DJ, Meichan juga memberi efek suara lewat PC tabletnya dan tidak ketinggalan menyuarakan vokalnya. Millenium, a long time ‘Kota’ club, recently changed their music concept from funky Kota into a more Southern Jakarta style of music. In order to let the changes be known, the club is now holding a series of events, presenting many house DJs, and as the opener in November Meichan, the well known singer of duo Maia performed. The show started with the resident DJ who was playing progressive, breaks, and also dutch sounds. After midnight, Meichan came up to do her thing, starting by singing on the DJ deck then played her very own set. She totally rocked it.

Dimulai sejak pukul 7 malam, acaranya diramaikan oleh penampilan sederet musisi, yaitu Cendi Luntungan, Nissan, Trias Acustica dan Blackcat House Band. Dengan tema pakaian black & white bagi para pengunjungnya, pesta selebrasi ini juga menampilkan BLP dan sebagai puncak dan sekaligus penutupnya, ada Gugun Blues Shelter. Gugun, Jono dan Bowie yang sempat tampil di London beberapa saat silam, memainkan sederetan lagu blues miliknya yang dicampur dengan lagu musisi lain dengan sangat atraktif. Black Cat Jazz & Blues held their 1st Anniversary on a very special date 11-11-11. The show started at 7pm with performances by Cendi Luntungan, Nissan, Trias Acustica and Blackcat House Band. With dress code black & white, the celebration also presented BLP and closed by Gugun Blues Shelter. Gugun, Jono and Bowie who were performing in London a few months ago, played some top-notch blues music. Happy anniversary to BlackCat, The Best Jazz & Blues club In Town!

pa jadinya jika Dennis Ferrer bertemu dengan Yousef dalam satu dek? Jawabannya bisa ditemukan pada tanggal langka di Jumat malam di Stadium. Yousef yang merupakan DJ asal London terlebih dahulu memainkan sederetan track bergenre house dengan sangat ‘dalam’. Pengunjung mulai berdatangan ke lantai empat, dan sebagian adalah penggemar dari kedua DJ tersebut. Barulah setelah Yousef menyelesaikan setnya, sekitar pukul 4 pagi, Dennis Ferrer mengambil alih dek dan menyetir para pendengarnya lebih masuk ke dalam deep house yang dimainkannya.

What happens if DJs Dennis Ferrer and Yousef play on the same decks? The answer could be found at Stadium last week. Yousef who is a DJ from London, performed first and played a solid deep house set. Partygoers who were the fans of them both started to fill the 4th floor early. After Yousef finished his set around 4am, then it was Dennis Ferrer’s turn. He took over the deck, and kept the crowd dancing around as much as himself. Both of these guys are top DJs and showed the Stadium crowd exactly why.

anggal 11 November 2011 atau disingkat menjadi 11-11-11 adalah kombinasi angka yang bagus dan banyak acara digelar pada tanggal tersebut. Saat seperti itulah yang dimanfaatkan oleh Red Square untuk menggelar acara peluncuran Martini Bar dengan judul acara Platinum Party. Kemeriahan acaranya sangat beragam, seperti ‘Glamorous Cocktail Dress Fashion Show’ rancangan dari Olive Lee yang diperagakan oleh para model dari Posture Management. Setelahnya, acara yang didukung oleh Absolut Vodka ini, juga diramaikan oleh penampilan kolaborasi antara DJ Ricky Chattaway dan sang model Catherine Wilson yang menyumbangkan suaranya. Jumlah pengunjung di Red Square malam itu tidak menyisakan ruang untuk bergerak. 11-11-11 was a great date and many big events were held to celebrate around town. Red Square launched their new Martini Bar with an event called Platinum Party. This event had various parts including a ‘Glamorous Cocktail Dress Fashion Show’ designed by Olive Lee with models from Posture Management and collaboration from DJ Ricky Chattaway and model Catherine Wilson, who was up on stage singing a few tracks. The crowd was so large that it didn’t leave much room to move.
