After one of the driest dry seasons in living memory we were bound to get quite a wet season this year and last week’s start was a classic. The ferocity of it may have taken a few people by surprise and none more than our friends at Karma Beach Batu Belig, who were trying to open their new beachside venue. Horizontal wind and rain doesn’t make for much of a grand opening, which was postponed a number of times, but eventually the winds calmed down and they could get it going. In the end it was a grand show. Another event affected adversely was the Market Jazz Festival in Tanjung Benoa. I suppose this all highlights the fact that Bali is in desperate need for a larger sized undercover venue. The maximum sized roofed venue right now would hold about 1500 people and with the amount of tourists arriving appearing to grow 25% a year, plus all the folks now moving here, it must be time to get it on. Bigger international acts are also arriving more often and one of the major complaints coming from the promoters is the lack of a decent sized venue, and especially in the wet season. The times they are a’changing quickly, indeed. This week we have a couple national holidays coming our way. One kinda huge; the Chinese New Year, and the other smaller, but no less large in this part of the world; Australia Day. Apparently, there are approximately four times the number of Aussies arriving to Bali for holidays since five years ago and they are well on top of the international arrival ratings. Blessed be the shrimp on the Barbie and Happy Australia Day! Chinese, Singaporeans and people of Chinese decent are also on the rise in visiting the island and typically they will all have a week of holidays to celebrate Tahun Baru Imlek as they say in these parts, so the next week will once again see an abundance of foreign arrivals to our shores, bars, shops and restaurants. We hope you all have a great time while here. Check the What’s On and HereNow sections inside for all the juice on what’s happening around town over the next two weeks.

Tourism 101 As a testament to the commitment to excellence shown by the 101 Legian, the hotel was honored by the Excellence Service Quality Indonesia Tourism awards for The Best Hotel & Excellent Service of the Year. Following up on another award they had achieved in the previous year, the 101 has kept and pushed its tourism standards upwards and onwards. General Manager Ms. Dewi Mas Bloem was on hand to receive this reward at an event filled with big names in the hospitality industry. The 101 Legian hopes to continue to better themselves and lead the hospitality market in Indonesia with the motivation of receiving a world class award in the near future.

Setting the bar high in the hospitality industry is key in today’s booming tourism market and not a lot come higher in standards and ratings then the Anantara Seminyak. Yes this is one of the few hotels in Bali certified to be tsunami ready. In Line with the organization’s stringent policies, Anantara Seminyak has created a comprehensive range of tsunami safety measures and procedures. An internal notification system that will alert guests about evacuation combined with staff trained to deal with potential disaster should mitigate excessive casualties. The Anantara has also extended their hands out to the community closest to them by ensuring that customers/guests from nearby restaurants, banjar, beach vendors and passerbies have a safe shelter.

IN MILD FUN MOMENTS COMPETITION In accordance to the launch of IN Mild FUN SERIES Limited Edition last December 2011, In Mild with Phoenix Radio Bali 91.0 FM held a photography contest for creative young people in Bali. Under the theme ‘Fun Moments’, anyone could send a photo that captured their own best fun moment with their friends that included one of the Fun Series’ icons such as boombox, headphone, turntable, digital pocket camera, or speaker. The competition was held from November 28 until December 24, 2011 and many people responded very well by sending their entries to the contest that had two famous names as the judges; Eka Rock (the bassist and vocalist of the band Superman Is Dead, who is also a keen technology and photographic lover) and Raditya Rama (a professional photographer who has won many competitions like National Geographic Rock Competition). “Each photo of the winners was really fun and matched the criteria, the quality was also great for non-professional photographers,” said Eka.

DJ Riri & FDJ Yasmin Le Bon THE STONE | SATURday 21 January Roots:

Riri Rachman was born and raised in Jakarta, starting his musical journey as a guitarist. At the age of 17, he moved to France and later to Switzerland, where he started his exploration in a small bar called Mayfair Café in Montreux. After a few years of shaping his DJ techniques, in 2000, he returned to Jakarta to explore the Indonesian scene, and soon after joined 1945 Music Factory. Born in the Netherlands, Yasmin le Bon became totally immersed in music as a teenager, exploring the sounds of different styles like house and hip hop. One of her best friends at the time was an incredible turntablist and she was completely overwhelmed with the technique he used to produce distinctive sounds and beats. Since then she has been hooked into the world of DJing.

Sound:

House, Progressive, Groovy House, Tech-House

www.beatmag.com

Where you might have heard of them:

Riri’s profile isn’t short. He serves not only local crowds but also Australians and Asians as well. He has played alongside the likes of Sasha, Nick Warren, Fedde Le Grand, Slacker, Stephan K, James Lavelle, Ashley Caselle, Harry Lemon and Kasey Taylor just to name a few. Yasmin has played in countless clubs throughout Europe and Asia, playing alongside Sebastian Ingrosso @ Franchise in Switzerland and various clubs in Italy, Spain, Turkey, the UK, Singapore and of course, Indonesia and her native Holland.

Why see them:

Never disappointing the crowd, Paranoia’s No. 1 DJ in Indonesia of 2007, DJ Riri Mestica is considered to be one of the leading spindoctors in Indonesia. Together with Yasmin le Bon and her groovy style, they will be breathing out fire on the dance floor when they play as The Twin Dragons this Saturday at The Stones.

ROWAN BLADES MINT | saturday 21 January Roots:

Blades has been in the game since the early 1990s when, as a teenager he helped promote the dance events which sculpted a generation; his number graced the ‘more info’ section of flyers for Raindance, Biology and countless others in London, which were great at the time. His influences include: Pink Floyd, Hendrix, New Order, Sasha, Leftfield, Prodigy, Frank De Wulf, Danny Howells, Digweed, Jean Michel Jarre, Centre Force Radio, Sunrise and Energy Raves, MDMA, muddy fields, Fila boots, LTJ Bukem, Grooveyard Records, Guerilla Records and The Guardian to mention a lot. He says that every piece of music he’s ever liked has influenced him in some way or another.

Sound: Electronica, house, breaks

Where you might have heard of him:

www.beatmag.com

Blades is incredibly hard working, splitting his time between DJing from Hong Kong, USA, Norway, the Czech Republic, China, Moscow and his second home, the studio. Though he came to the public eye with 4/4 dance-floor oriented tracks that were picked up on by international progressive heavyweights, Rowan is so much more than that. Most recently, he has negotiated a deal with Sony Interactive and has been responsible for working the soundtracks for, amongst others, the cult videogame ‘Wipeout’. However, it was his first venture into the ‘business’ side of the music industry that has arguably been his most successful. The Rhythm Syndicate brand was a great success, from the now closed but highly regarded record shop in Cambridge to the Tenaglia-friendly label, synonymous with quality house and breaks from trendsetters JDS, Osiris, Liquid People and Blades’ own many pseudonyms.

Why see him:

Rowan Blades is so much more than just another DJ. In these rollercoaster times, where originality, flexibility and downright abilities and talent are the core values of success, Rowan Blades continues to cut it. Check him out at Mint this Saturday.

OMID 16B

h e r e n o w

054

Roots:

Hu’u Bar | saturday 21 January

Omid Nourizadeh is better known as Omid 16B. A DJ, producer, songwriter, musician and label boss, Omid has forged a unique and prolific career as one of the world’s most talented and respected musicians. Growing up in London, with Persian roots, Omid was influenced by the likes of Jimi Hendrix, The Cure, Depeche Mode and The Mission and throughout his teens became an accomplished musician playing in his own band. Gradually Omid’s tastes became increasingly dance, rather than rock focused and in 1994, he made the pivotal step of setting up Alola Records.

Sound:

House, techno, electronica

Where you might have heard of him:

In addition to his large global fan base, Omid enjoys major industry support from the likes of Sasha and Carl Cox to Danny Tenaglia and Robert Smith (The Cure) as well as John Digweed, Danny Howells, Sharam and Dubfire. Producing under a number of pseudonyms including 16B, Phaser, $16 Million Dollar Man and Omid 16B. With an impressive discography of singles, LPs and compilation albums released on his own imprints (Alola, Disclosure and SexOnWax) as well as signed to the likes of Hooj Choons, Yoshitoshi and Ministry Of Sound, Omid has maintained the highest quality throughout his prolific career. From a remix perspective, Omid has put his touch to artists such as The Cure, Gus Gus, Danny Howells, Halo Vagra, Francois Kevorkian and Pete Moss and his latest productions include an EP for John Digweed’s Bedrock label (‘Rain/ Passion of Zorro’), ‘The At Night’ EP on Alola and the acclaimed ‘Sequential EP’ series which was released on his SexOnWax label during 2010.

Why see him:

With his undeniable ability and impeccable pedigree, considered alongside his impressive discography and esteemed reputation, Omid 16B is a formidable talent and a true pioneer on the international dance circuit.

J-Smoove eikon | saturday 28 January

Roots:

Prior to falling in love with the art of turntablism, Aussie native J-Smoove was born a musician playing piano, drums and guitar from a very early age.

Sound:

Mash-up: Dirty Dutch House/Electro, Baltimore, Hip Hop, Dubstep, Rock, Pop.

www.beatmag.com

Where you might have heard of him:

J-Smoove rocks out at just about every major club Australia including Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Tasmania, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Canberra, Cairns and Perth. He has gained respect, recognition and experience by playing in exotic locations like Thailand (Bangkok), Burma (Yangon), and New Zealand (Auckland). He’s also a resident at several Sydney hotspots, an iTunes podcast that has 20,000+ subscriptions and a plethora of mix CD compilations distributed throughout Australia. He has also performed with huge names like Boyz 2 Men, Jessica Mauboy, Naughty By Nature and Ice Cube.

Why see him:

His distinct style of scratching, live remixing and blending classic party anthems, span across a lot of genres and some consider him to be Australia’s #1 mashup DJ.

BALAWAN

BARON SUPRAYOGI

DEWA BUDJANA hard rock Cafe | wednesday 25 January

Roots:

Three of Indonesia’s most influential guitarists get together for one show. I Wayan Balawan has listened to Balinese gamelan, a traditional music style from Bali since birth. He taught himself to play the guitar by the age of eight and joined his first band when he was just 14 years old. He eventually moved from rock music to study jazz at the Australian Institute of Music in Sydney. Dewa Budjana became passionate in terms of musicianship when he moved to Surabaya, East Java, where he took classical music lessons and then moved to Jakarta and joined a band, and not any band, it was Gigi. Baron Suprayogi started by learning classical piano at the age of 12 years, then graduated to acoustic guitar shortly after and onto rock music, and also joined the band Gigi in the early nineties.

Sound:

Rock, Jazz

www.beatmag.com

Where you might have heard of them:

Balawan is a guitar freak and world famous with his “touch tapping” style of playing the guitar and often plays in Germany and Norway. Dewa Budjana is one of the founding members of the band Gigi and later experiemneted with many other forms of music. Baron was playing guitar with Gigi till 1995 and since then with his own band Baron Soulmate.

Why see them:

If you want to see true musicianship from three amazing Indonesian legends of the guitar, be sure to rock into Hard Rock Cafe on January 25.

ainy days arrived with force when the festivities were due to be held, but that didn’t stop people heading out there to see the show. Many big names in Indonesian jazz like Balawan, Lisa Soul, Ito Kurdi & Abad 21, Khatulistiwa, The Brass Section, The Widi Noor Fusion, Brian Bethie & Indra Gupto Trio Ft Syaharani, and more performed at the event. The stage had been moved to a drier position due to the bad weather which made the show more intimate because people could get up close with the performers. Besides great music, Jazz Market also had some excellent food stalls and merchandise to purchase.

Andhim played their tunes while the crowds sipped some drinks and a bit of a groove on the dance floor. It was a really great event and too bad if you missed it.

cissor Sisters lived up to all the hype last Saturday night, delivering a top show at Hard Rock Café Bali in Kuta. Besides having initial sound problems that according to vocalist Ana Matronic almost derailed the show and caused a late start, the band came on stage and knocked out the full house in attendance. They played all their hit tracks from ‘Take Your Mama’, ‘Laura’, ‘Fire With Fire’, Filthy Gorgeous’ and finishing off with their smash hit of a few years ago, ‘I Don’t Feel Like Dancing’. Great show, and goes to show people will pay the big bucks to see the big shows in town. Keep ‘em coming.

Dethu with Soleh Solihan answer questions at the launch of the book at Antida Arts Sanur. Photo by Teddy Drew

A new book telling the story of nontraditional music in Bali over the past four decades was released and launched at Antiba Arts in Sanur last weekend. The book called Blantika|Linimasa (Scene|Timeline) is curated and edited by local rock ‘n’ roll luminary, longtime beat magazine contributor and former Superman is Dead manager, Rudolph Dethu. It’s written in Bahasa by a group of writers; Alfred Pacifico Ginting, Anton Muhajair, Gede Roby Supriyanto and Dethu, and looks into the way that pop, rock and every other modern music form, outside the traditional Balinese music sphere, has evolved on the island. There have been many highs and lows on the way to where local music finds itself now but has it actually made it all the way?

We asked Dethu, to begin with, whether it has been easy for non-traditional music forms to find a foothold in the local music scene. Dethu: It’s never been easy. Especially due to almost no support from the government. The government focused more on traditional arts— gamelan and all that—rather than modern music (they are scared this form of art will be gone soon if they don’t support it). So basically the non-traditional music could live and survive simply by the support from public enthusiasm, young people to be precise. This pop culture has never been taken seriously. Meanwhile young people, most of them felt sick to be dictated to respect the old tradition. They want something different, something that really represents them, something cool, not boring, up to date, which they find it in pop culture, modern music.

You’ve done your research on the matter. Who was the first original band to have success on the island? Dethu: As I mentioned earlier, it was Band Putra Dewata. Could sell, according to “Bali Menggugat” book by Putu Setia, 100 thousand copies. But the first band who succesfully broke national mainstream success was Superman Is Dead (which I used to manage). Are there any particular parts of the book that stand out for you? Like, people, stories or moments that stick out in your mind? Dethu: I personally like the pages of Balibali mostly because after I dug deeper, I found so many interesting facts. I guess the general public will also be surprised to finally discover what really was going on back in the day in Balibali world. Oh, I’m not saying that the Balinesia part isn’t interesting. It’s just because I’m the insider so I pretty much know what’s going on. Do you think there is a reason why punk rock has had so much traction over the years in Denpasar? And are there any changes happening nowadays? Dethu: I think the popularity of Superman Is Dead nationally—and internationally—has created a significant impact (I bet SID in the very near future will become one out of the three biggest rock bands in Indonesia). Kids become inspired by the success story of SID. This phenomenon even expanded to an anomaly which punk rock and its subgenre is now the strongest music existing in Bali. Not bubblegum pop, but the strongest music is now punk rock and its subgenres and also rock in general. Haha. Any changes happening nowadays, well, SID have inspired the Bali youth to build their own bands. Punk rock has opened many doors.

85

f e a t u r e

Has the web and social media had much of an effect on the local music scene? Dethu: Definitely. Bali is relatively faraway from Jakarta, the music centre of Indonesia. Back in the day bands had to take a bus (due to the fact that they couldn’t afford taking a plane), 24 hours drive to perform in Jakarta. So exhausting and would ruin your performance because you were tired, you weren’t at your best shape. Some tried their luck by moving there so they can get more exposure from the press and music moguls. But after the heavy penetration of social media, it’s been very helpful to Bali. Bali bands don’t have to travel to Jakarta just to be noticed. Or have to send tons and tons of promo kits to media in Jakarta. Socmed has made things more financially efficient. Any new bands can relatively have the same chance to be noticed, as long as they are connected to socmed. We’ve all heard of the local bands Superman is Dead, Navicula, Psychofun etc. Is there a new breed of band ready to knock down the door? Any original bands to keep an eye on? Dethu: Discotion Pill, they are not new. But people need to give them more serious attention. They are brilliant. Nymphea, also not new but they get so much better and tighter as time goes by. Painful by Kisses, not too new but these days have one of the strongest followers in rock scene. The new one who have created a big buzz are of course Nosstress. In their early twenties and very talented. Not to forget also Dialog Dini Hari, a new band consisting of veterans. Do you think the local music scene has really established itself now or does it still have somewhere further to go? Dethu: Yes. Indeed. It’s really strong right now. Lots of cool bands. The quality gets better and better. However, there aren’t enough stages, though. They need more outlets to express themselves plus to show people how good they are so the public won’t see the same bands every time. Plus, same as what happens in other parts of the world, the record sales are suffering. The money issue is still a big problem. Where’s the book available? Dethu: You can get it at Warung Yaya, Sanur, or Antida, or order online to rudolfdethu@ rudolfdethu.com. It’s really cheap, only Rp 10 thousand. I’m not trying to make money here. Just wanna share interesting stories about nontrad Bali music. It’s not just a book. It’s a history book, mind you.

www.beatmag.com

Where did the original music scene (people playing their own music and not doing covers) first spring up, Denpasar or Kuta? Dethu: Denpasar. In 1970s there was already a band called, Band Putra Dewata. According to one source, they even sold 100 thousand albums (with their original songs) during their heyday. And in the late 90s there was this underground scene—yes, original songs also—which was responded to enthusiastically by the young audience of Denpasar. Not long after that, the underground scene expanded to Kuta. Firstly started by The Beat mag with its legendary Beat Rock Fest, in 2001, if I’m not mistaken. It was historical because never before local bands with original songs were allowed or welcome to play at clubs in Kuta/Seminyak. The first Beat Rock Fest at now-defunct Aina Bar was historic.

Raditya Rondi

Wins 6th Annual Monsoon Mayhem International Surf Challenge in Malaysia Current Asian Surfing Champion Raditya Rondi from Indonesia took the Men’s Open victory yesterday in the 6th annual Monsoon Mayhem International Surf Challenge at Desaru Beach in Malaysia, battling it out in a 25 minute challenge against Mohd Nazrin “Super Yen” from Malaysia, Abdullah Areef from the Maldives, and Gilang from Indonesia.

www.beatmag.com

The surfing conditions on the final day lived up to the moniker of “mayhem” for the most part, with 3-4 foot waves closing out on the inside sandbars and rain squalls blowing in and out, but for the Men’s Open finals the conditions cleaned up and allowed a thrilling finale to the three-day Monsoon Mayhem competition. Rondi was all smiles back on the beach after the final, pleased to be starting the 2012 ASC tour season with a win. “This is my first time coming here to Desaru and it’s been lots of fun, so to take the win today just caps it off. It’s a great way to start off the year. We were really lucky that conditions got better in the finals, with the wind all but stopping so it got pretty good, which made it easier to find a couple of nice waves. It was also cool to see all the Malaysian crew again, as I really enjoy surfing with these guys here and the whole experience,” he said. When asked about the significance of his win today Rondi replied, “Yes it’s great to win the first event of the season, but there are a lot of good surfers on the ASC tour now and there will

be lots more events, so I’ll have to work hard and travel if I want to retain my title in 2012. But I’m going to do my best, and this is a great start!” Abdullah Areef from the Maldives was satisfied with his third place finish, saying “I’m glad I got into the finals, so I can go back home with a trophy. The waves got much cleaner for the final, which made for a great ending. I’ve really enjoyed the event, and I want to do a lot more ASC events this year for sure, that’s my plan for 2012.” The Asian Surfing Championship tour is just starting its second season, after having sanctioned a total of 9 events held in four countries, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Thailand in 2011. The Monsoon Mayhem is the first event of 2012 season. The Monsoon Mayhem International Surf Challenge took place on the golden sands of Desaru Beach, located an hours drive east of Johor Baru and approximately 1.5 hours by car from Singapore. During the three days of the event, the surfing action included the Men’s Open Division, Women’s Division, Masters (over 35 years of age) Division, and a Bodyboard Division, with over 80 participants coming from Australia, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, the Maldives, Singapore, and of course Malaysia. Walking out onto the breezy rooftop, it’s clear that a venue such as this is unique for Kuta, with most of the action happening down at street level at most eateries in town. Up here though, it’s a different atmosphere, and with the bustle left far below it’s easy to slide into relax mode. A cocktail or two also never hurts when faced with comfy chillout sofas, and so my buddy and I order up a couple of the bartender’s recommendations before getting stuck into the menu; namely a kiwi lush (78k++) and a limoncello martini (75k++). First up to start us off we go for a tom yum talay soup (35k++) and a plate of the amazingly tender octopus spicy rings (45k++) – a nice change to the standard calamari rings found everywhere else. Feeling particularly hungry we also split a serving of the fantastic fusion prawn tempura (95k++) which is perfect for sharing. For the mains it a hard choice, but eventually after much deliberating we get stuck into a plate of pan fried barramundi (115k++) and the excellent imported 101 duck (90k++). Both excellent examples of beautifully presented, crowd pleasing fare that is consistent with everything else on the rooftop menu. A black forest cake (45k++) and a stack of the smoothie pancakes (40k++) round things off nicely, although be warned, the pancakes should not be tackled alone! Helping to wash down the sweet treats a couple more cocktails (dirty bit and senior playboy – both 75k++) finish off the afternoon on a high note. Looking to escape the Kuta madness and kick back with some scrumptious nosh or a tasty tipple in hand? Look no further than the 101 Rooftop. Dan Ashcroft

n exhibition featuring six photographic artists. The works showcased here belong to five international and one local photographer. Names such as January Tyniec whose works explores culture and nature, to separate the real from the artificial. Exploiting contrasts and gradations of light and dark he maintains a balance between realisticdocumentary closeness and formal aesthetics finesse. Indonesia’s own Made Ade Wianta’s use of photography in his work disclaimed any relation to art photography. Wianta treated the photographic medium with an anti-art photography attitude that reminds one of Ed Ruscha who insisting that his 1960s photo books are “technical data like industrial photography... nothing more than snapshots” (Ruscha 1965). This with artist Linda Connor: An Appointment with Death, Lonnie Graham: The Paradox of Photographic Portrait, Vladik Monroe: The Doublefold Self-referential Art and Joel Singer: Photomontage in the Digital Age is set to bring a fresh twist to all who are keen in this ever evolving art of photography.

From the rich and the famous to the sick and the shameless, flip, flop and fly, this gal does it all from continent to continent. Rock stars, movie stars, models, the underground and the slums. If it’s a part of life, Stephanie captures the moment that few others never seem to achieve, the eye is the camera. You can see her photos at JP’s Warung until the end of February.

Stephanie Cornfield

Photographer at Large

S.B. Click away. S.C. Stephanie Cornfield, age, ooh, do I have to (Laughter), secret.. Born in Paris, but traveled to America frequently, I have dual citizenship, French, American, but with mixed origin.

www.beatmag.com

S.B. Did you have a formal education that led you to photo school? S.C. Finished high school in Paris, then I lived in London for two years, back to Paris and America, university where I studied political science, photography came by accident. S.B. An accident waiting to happening, (Laughter), Crash on? S.C. Quite late, I was 26 and doing photo’s for “Night Life,” Paris, London , New York, that was underground stuff. S.B. Pun intended, how did the accident develop? (Laughter)? S.C. Studying political science, I wanted to be a war reporter.

S.B. You’re definitely not the average cut, (Laughter), Onward. S.C. I had a boyfriend that was a war reporter for C.B.S. News based in London, I joined him in the first Gulf War in Israel in 1991 up front and center, I realized I wasn’t strong enough psychologically to do this, also attracted to the art thing and I had a B.A. in international relations, so I thought of having a masters degree in film school, Los Angeles, where my father was living, that was the plan, but life has it’s changes, so I had to stop everything I was doing. I said by accident because I was doing photography before, but never thinking of it as a career. S.B. How long were you taking pictures and with what kind of camera? S.C .My very first camera that my father gave me was an old Nikomat, great camera, very heavy, that was at age 23. S.B. Were you developing your own photos? S.C. Yes, yes, I come from the old school, at that time it was real film, doing my own printing and

S.B. Definitely a riot house of photos that one, one never knew if he was going to stick the microphone up his ass or cut his throat, amazing how he lived through it all.. So it turns out, on the job training? S.C. Yes, definitely, doing it. I wished I would have done more earlier. I was hanging out with this famous photographer Nat Finkelstein and he was taking pictures at Andy Warhol’s Factory and he was showing me his stuff, I had no idea I was gong to do that, so hence, the photographer’s world. The past 10 years has been in the film industry, taking pictures of movie stars, especially festivals, which is a limited time with these people, sometimes it’s two minutes, 10 minutes, its really quick with pure adrenaline, I like to work like that, under pressure. S.B. What we’ve been talking about so far is the entertainment business side, now the Middle East, quite a departure? S.C. Actually starting to take pictures in India, India is a paradise for photographs.

S.B. Did he help in having you do photos in his organization? S.C. Not at all, I met my uncle by an incredible coincidence. Much later on a rainy night in London I met this girl who asked to share a cab with me, we started talking, I told her what I was doing, looking for a bit of modeling, looking for a place to stay, we kept in contact. I discovered she was a lesbian stunt woman in the movies, quite a character, one year later she was on her way back to Paris from Cannes and she called me, I’m here in Paris. So here we are, she asked me my name again, I said Cornfield, hold on your going to speak to someone, hello, I’m your uncle in-law, I said Bernie! He said the family is very small, we have to meet, incredible, fate, destiny. We clicked immediately. My father never told me I had this rich uncle, so it was like a fairy tale and I followed my uncle and entered into a whole new world, restaurants, theater, high life. S.B. So it all began on that level? S.C. Yes, but my father was a film director, in 1962 he directed a movie with Sydney Pointier called The Night of the Following Day and then in 1969 with Marlon Brando, a few more, critically acclaimed, but not commercial, he went back to Europe and married my mother, then back to America. Actually my grandfather was a producer and my great grandfather was an impresario, one of the pioneers in central Europe, he was an actor and film producer.

S.B. So this is basically for your own head as an artist? S.C. Yes, especially this gathering of holy men, Sadus. When they take a dip in the Ganges, which is called Kumbh Mela every 12 years there’s this huge gathering which takes place in three different places in India; Albeit, Hardidware, the other name I forgot.

S.B. There’s no business like show business, as the song goes, in the blood, one vein or another. Future plans? S.C. I will be living in India for four months, Bombay, I have contacts with Bollywood Independent Cinema and develop my photographic stories, pictures in the slums, more of this, back to Europe for the Cannes Film Festival, and I’m an assigned photographer for the last five years with the Los Angeles Times, that’s the bible in Hollywood.

S.B. What surprises me is this February at JP’s Warung on Dyhanna Pura you’re having your first photo exhibition, S.C. Yes, that will be for two months.

S.B. Click, there you have it, thanks Stephanie, been a whirlwind.

S.B. You certainly have archives of material; will you be putting a book together? S.C. It’s the same thing like the exhibition, I never look for it, it comes to me, so at one point. S.B. Back tracking, you mentioned your uncle, Bernie Cornfeld, not Cornfield and what position did he have in the entertainment industry?

109

a r t

S.B. Self reliant S.C. So I thought, why not photography, I can just take my camera and go out and do things, easy. First year not seriously, then to New York where my uncle Bernie Cornfeld gave me celebrity membership cards, flying from one club to another, one race to another, it was fun, I was a big party girl and I loved photos of drag queens, druggies and being on the scene, they knew who I was and was excepted to do photos, I wasn’t a stranger, so to speak. Visually it was really interesting and I developed a big archive of this. Then I became a rock photographer working for a famous magazine based in France called Best, that went on for years. My most memorable rock star was Iggy Pop, loved him.

S.C. My grandfather immigrated to the United States during the war escaping and changed the name, my father kept his original name. Bernie, a flamboyant businessman, not in show business, he created an international fund called I.O.S., Investors Over Seas, but his love for women lead him to open a famous model agency and production house to get the girls. (Laughter)

S.B. Anything you’d like to say to shut the lens? S.C. Don’t try, just do it. (Laughter).

developing, even using infra-red film, which is a very delicate process, because this film, you had to develop in metallic tubs, not plastic and it’s tedious. So I gave it to a lab and they screwed it up (Laughter), so from then on I did everything on my own.

Feel

The Exotic Bali Coffee Scrub is one of the body treatments that they offer. Agung. After exfoliation, your skin is conditioned with a choice of body butter. A warm milk bath with flower petals is drawn and you are able to lay in peace as you gently wash yourself off.

Ingredients

There are several different massage oils, body butters and scrubs you can choose from, like rose oil to body yoghurt to Bali coffee scrub to Javanese lulur to coconut scrub.

Come

www.beatmag.com

the downpours,

will you be singin’ in the rain?

Living in a tropical country with its fair share of heavy rain, we still seem to get caught out when it really pours. Jim Read goes for a sing in the .....

My usual, 20-minute ojek (motorcycle taxi) journey became an epic, two-and-a-half-hour expedition as I first searched for a taxi and then got caught in near gridlock, all with no let-up from the incessant rain. People complained about it for days and weeks later, as some did not arrive home until the early hours of the morning. That was probably the worst example of Jakarta rain-induced traffic chaos in living memory. We’d better prepare ourselves, though, for the government’s weather agency has been giving stark warnings that this year’s wet season will peak from mid-January to mid-February. What’s more, it will coincide with two high tides in January, so flooding in northern parts of the city is highly likely. Ominously, we are in the fifth year of what seems to be a five-yearly cycle of exceptionally heavy rains – remember early 2002 and 2007? The city authorities have been saying for weeks now they’ve been preparing for the worst but you can imagine what will happen once the deluge begins. Flooding will occur, as the drainage system will get clogged up due to the sheer amount of rubbish that’s been swept into it (how often do you witness that, by the way?) while the traffic, already moving at snail’s pace, will grind to a halt completely. One can only imagine what the scene will be like at locations where traffic congestion is already bad, for example where major road improvement projects are still ongoing – like right in front of Mal Ambassador, Jl. Dr Satrio.

Perhaps the most surprising aspect is how we, as individuals, behave. When I first lived in Jakarta, many years ago, I was frequently surprised (annoyed, even) at how people seemed so unprepared for rain. ‘Why don’t they carry umbrellas?’ I thought. Having been here for a while, I find myself as guilty as all those other umbrella-less people, reliant on the boys (yes, it’s still mainly boys that do it) who offer you an umbrella while they get soaked walking alongside you. Somehow they still manage to keep smiling, though. I remember once being caught in Jakarta, completely unprepared for heavy rain. Although it was an overcast day, there was no prior warning that the heavens were about to open. When that happened, I was about as far as it was possible to be from any form of shelter like a tree, bus stop or shop doorway. Within seconds, I was as drenched as if I’d been standing, fully clothed, in a shower with the water running at full blast. By then there was no point in seeking shelter so I carried on walking through the downpour, much to the surprise of onlookers. I felt almost like breaking into a chorus from that iconic scene in the film musical Singin’ in the Rain: Gene Kelly gets drenched and ends up using his umbrella as an impromptu dancing partner and kicking the rain in the gutter, as a raincoat-clad cop looks on. You’re likely to get wet one way or another over the next few weeks so instead of cursing you’ve forgotten your umbrella or raincoat take a deep breath and remember that it’s an inevitable part of living in the tropics. After all, even Orchard Road sometimes gets flooded in that most well-organised of cities, Singapore.

an you remember exactly what you did on Monday, October 25, 2010? Most unlikely. Let me rephrase the question to jog your memory. That day (easy to remember as it was exactly two calendar months before Christmas) was when a colossal rain storm in Jakarta caused unparalleled havoc in the capital city. How did you get home that night?
