The weather once again was the major talking point in the last two weeks. I had a horror trip to Jakarta last week for the Beat BBQ at Lex in Kuningan where the plane I was supposed to catch was turned back to land at Surabaya because the weather was so bad at Denpasar Airport that they couldn’t land. The plane was eventually three hours late to Jakarta arriving at 3.30 in the morning Bali time, but looking out the window from Bali airport that night when it was supposed be leaving I wouldn’t have wanted to get on any plane at that point anyway. The flight across in the end wasn’t particularly pleasurable in any event but we did make it. I’d have to say congratulations to the pilots; it’s surely no mean feat doing that stuff every day this time of the year. Meanwhile, there have been a number of calamities and hold ups over the past weeks due to the weather, but one can’t say it’s unexpected; it is the wet season after all. Let’s hope it blows away pretty soon. So back to the party. We have another mixed bag coming our way in the next weeks. US rock band Four Year Strong will be playing live at Hard Rock Café, while living legend in the DJ music world John Digweed is back in town for a gig at Mint. Love in tents presents Van She Technologic at Hu’u Bar next Friday night and Valentine’s Day is coming soon too with just about every restaurant and venue supplying the romantic setting for all the cupids in town to frolic and display their mutual love to the whole world. So sweet. Other gigs to watch out for are Bruno from Ibiza at Rock Bar, and Pete Herbert doing a stint at W next weekend. So, it’s all happening around Bali again this week. Keep dry, keep good and for all the information on the shows around town and the main acts visiting our shores, please go directly inside to the What’s On and HereNow sections to find out more. There’s plenty more inside too, so help yourself to another dynamic edition of the beat magazine and have a great two weeks on the island.

Jumbo Donations Bali Adventure Tours and Elephant Safari Park and Lodge participated in the “Elephant Parade’ held by Sotheby’s auction house in Singapore. The event was an open air art exhibition of painted elephant statues to bring awareness and support for Asian elephants, which are endangered. The proceeds will go to projects that include elephant hospitals, restoration of vital land corridors and for lobbying governments and for research. Bali Adventure bought two statues with a $30,000 donation which will be exhibited at their elephant museum.

Tattoos Cleaned up in Kuta Bali’s Badung Regency is planning to regulate local tattoo businesses in an effort to prevent the transmission and spread of HIV/AIDS in the area. It was widely reported in the Australian media that a Perth man was infected with HIV after having tattoo work done while on holiday in Kuta in November last year. Deputy Regent of Badung, Ketut Sudikerta, said the move to regulate tattoo parlours in Kuta follows a press release from West Australian health authorities warning against having tattoo or piercing procedures done in Bali. Chief legislator of Badung Regency, Wayan Puspa Negara, said hundreds of unregulated tattoo studios exist in Kuta. “It is important to protect people against the risk of infection,” he said.

Truth is, nothing can be achieved without a team and at the 101 Legian this is the mentality that keeps them at the forefront of Bali’s hospitality industry. The marketing communication division plays a very important role in developing brand awareness and company representation amongst other things. And in the spirit of ‘team’ the hotel welcomes Feriani Chung on board as the new marcom under the guidance of the sales and marketing division. Her experiences in the past has seen her spearheading projects at one of Kuta’s hippest hotels and now brings her swanky style to the 101. She hopes to inject some fresh ideas and expand the creative works of the 101 Legian & Rooftop. Chic? You better believe it.

Van She Technologic Smashing out some of the hottest remixes of the last decade, Van She Technologic, have cemented their position as perennial party-starters. The electronic bastard child of Sydney dance-rock four piece, Van She, Van She Technologic has risen to redefine again and again the global dancescape with standout remixes including the UK Pop Chart Top Ten restyling of the Utah Saints’ Something Good 08 and the high-energy remix of the Klaxons’ Gravity’s Rainbow. More recently, Nicolas Routledge and Michael Di Francesco, the duo behind the decks, have worked on reimagining Van She’s own tunes as part of a project resulting in Ze Vemixes. Completely gutting the flowing riffs and euphoric synth work that characterised the band’s debut album, V, the boys transformed the sound into something sharper, edgier and altogether dirtier.

www.beatmag.com

Performing live, Van She Technologic’s in-your-face presence, technique and timing comes together to satisfy the most voracious fans of the dance genre. With this in mind, Bali's premier party proponent Love in Tents brings to the island the devastating DJ duo for a night that won't be forgotten any time soon. Get down to Hu’u Bar on Saturday, February 10, to be slapped right in the face by Van She Technologic. You’ll leave begging for more.

four Year strong hard rock cafe | wednesday 15 february

Roots:

Four Year Strong is an American pop punk band from Worcester, Massachusetts, formed in 2001. The group consists of vocalists and guitarists Dan O’Connor and Alan Day, bassist Joe Weiss and drummer Jackson Massucco. The band simply developed their sound off the idea of playing “exactly what they want to hear” or music that they would listen to, but no one else was playing at the time. Their influences come from ‘Lifetime’, ‘Saves the Day’, ‘Gorilla Biscuits’, ‘Blink-182’, and ‘New Found Glory’. In April 2011, a former band member, Josh Lyford left the band as the other members elected to remove synthesizers from their sound. The band continues today as a four piece collective.

Sound:

Pop punk, hardcore punk.

WHERE YOU MIGHT HAVE HEARD THEM:

www.beatmag.com

Four Year Strong have released four studio albums: It’s Our Time (2005), Rise Or Die Trying (2007), Enemy of the World (2010) and more recently, In Some Way, Shape, or Form’(2011). They have done multiple national tours in the US, and last year toured the UK. They have been to Australia and Brazil as well to play for their fans across the world.

WHY SEE THEM:

If you are a popcore or ‘beardcore’ fan, Four Year Strong brings you a fast paced and motivational style in their music. Check them out at Hard Rock Cafe next Wednesday night.

o celebrate Chinese New Year, Hu’u bar held a very oriental event entitled ‘One Night in Shanghai’. Everything went into Chinese mode at around 10pm with gong beatings and a Barongsai (Chinese puppet dragon) show, and the sharing of angpao (money in a little envelope). DJ Omid 168 (UK) was also dishing out the beats. It seemed like hu’u bar was more crowded than China that night and everyone seemed to be having a jolly good time.

J Rowan Blades played at a very full house at Mint on Saturday. The DJ wasn’t the only center of attention when the staff brought out a cake with candles for a surprise birthday party for one of Mint’s owners. The event went pretty well with a massive performance by Rowan that turned the club into a gyrating sea of dancing bodies.

his is the year of the Water Dragon according to the Chinese Zodiac and with this rainy weather, it couldn’t be more appropriate. The show was started by DJ Anastasia’s performance and was continued by DJ Dree who performed until the end of the show. It was a very cool Chinese New Year with the great music and atmosphere with which the W is so well known.

othing beats a good barbeque. Not to toot our own horn or anything, but this Beat barbeque was pretty darn good. On one hand, there was particularly great food and lots of it. The full buffet included steaks, a variety of sausages, succulent boneless chicken thighs, well marinated portabella mushrooms, grilled veggies and plethora of side dishes. On the other hand, free flow Heineken. People ate, they drank, and had a great time. Special thanks to chef Phil Mimbini and the rest of the hu’u crew for making this a great afternoon of excess and gourmet bbq fun.

alawan, Baron Suprayogi and Dewa Budjana are arguably three of the best guitarists Indonesia has to offer. So it was pretty special to see them jam on stage together at the Bali Guitar Club. The atmosphere was overwhelmingly positive as the three guitar masters played a bunch of tracks to a very appreciative crowd. Throughout the show, the members of this elite Bali guitar club played a wide array of genres as a true testament to their musicianship and skills.

aturday was full of rain and wind and general unpleasantness from mother nature. Kuta looked a bit quiet that night, but Eikon seemed to draw a fun crowd for DJ J Smooves. They arrived late, but the crowd that did come were loose from a very liberal night of excess consumption. One guy even got into his birthday suit, which his girlfriends did not seem too happy about. The crowd swelled at Sky Dome no doubt looking for a safe place to party away from the torrential rains. A few people wore superhero outfits while partying that night, don’t know why, but who cares, its party time! Wooohoooo!

Glynn Tandy The Beat chats with the local and international resident DJs and musicians entertaining the masses of the island...

Let’s start with basics, tell us something about yourself. I grew up in Blackpool, England, and spent my early years frequently in the party scene of the northwest of England in clubs like the Hacienda, Back to Basics and Cream where my love for house music grew but I left the UK when I was 19 and moved to Spain then Australia and have been living back and forth from KL, Malaysia to Bali for the last 14 years. You aren’t only a DJ, you produce as well. What are you currently putting together? Yeah, I started off DJing at an early age in UK and on the production side of things I have been making tracks for the last five to six years so that came after… I have just set my studio back up in Bali so I have a few new projects I’m working on and will be working with some local vocalists and musicians on the island as there is some great talent here. What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever seen at a club? Seen many a crazy thing in clubs and probably best kept quiet... Ha ha. But I would say some of the most bizarre things would happen in Ibiza as pretty much anything goes over there. Top five favorite tracks of all time? Wow this is a tough one and there have been many times this question has come up and I still find it hard to pick five, but here are five that come to mind. 1. Where Love Lives - Alison Limerick 2. Vodoo Ray - Guy Called Gerald 3. Unfinished Symphony - Massive Attack 4. Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division 5. Fool’s Gold - The Stone Roses Top three favorite movies of all time? 1. Breakdance 2. Scarface 3. Debbie does Dallas :-)

It’s raining, you’re stuck in traffic. Exhaust fumes intermittently contaminate the air surrounding you, but you have your ipod and earphones. What do you play? Erm...! “It’s a Beautiful Day” by U2... Ha

f e a t u r e

079

What would you kill for? My mum’s Sunday roast dinner!! You can take the boy out of England but you can’t take England out of the boy. You’re reading these questions, quickly look behind you and describe what you see. All the volcanoes in the distance. From my studio here you can see Mount Agung on a clear day. Can’t be bad for inspiration! What’s worse: Being toothless in a corn eating contest or being legless in a butt kicking contest? Why? Wow what a mental question… Erm! Well both sound pretty pony to me, but think I would rather have no teeth than no legs but I must say I can’t stand the taste of corn so that’s a tough one to choose. You got anything coming up? Well it’s a new year and I’m putting a lot of focus back into making new tracks and hopefully get some bangers out there as I’m not the best for finishing off tracks and must have about 20 tracks still sitting in Ableton waiting to be finished. Ha ha. But yeah got loads in the pipeline with gigs and got some interesting collaborations coming up that I’m looking forward to getting on in the studio so 2012 is gonna be an exciting year. You can catch Glynn’s sounds at many spots around town - Kudeta, La Plancha, Sky Garden, La Barca, and Cocoon.

Interviewed by Dedi Kristian

Born and bred in Bali, Dedi Kristian aka Daddy O is doing the stuff he knows and embracing the stuff he doesn’t. Radio, music, photography, entertainment journalism, nursing the Bali hip hop community and occasionally being a wedding mc. As he leaves The Beat after four years, here’s an interview for his slight insight so we can get over him and move on.

Tell us about your hip hop interests. Hip hop came as a culture that broke into my boring life at that time. I was a stereotypical person who studied, worked, ate and waited to die. The culture gave me the options to develop myself to a different point of view. Short story, I feel like I owe hip hop and should do something. I see so many individuals who celebrate and practice the culture well, then I gather some people to make a little community called ‘Bali Hiphop Community’. I nursed the birth of it and now that it grows and develops itself, I just watch from behind the scenes and give it love. At The Beat, what’s the good story? Amazing to be a part of The Beat, I admire how the magazine influences the nightlife and entertainment growth on the island. People I worked with are nice and creative. Cool editors. Though I took a small part in it, I feel like I got so much for that four years.

What’s the best part in The Beat? Wearing shorts and sandals to the office and calling it ‘going to work’. Gaining journalism knowledge, getting new connections, eating delicious food for free, enjoying a fancy spa treatment without paying, and great friends. Bad memories? Getting rejected while doing fun pics at clubs or restaurants, deadlines chasing around while doing other work. Some say you’re a religious type? Don’t believe in religion. A real relationship with the real God will work for sure. I’m a part of a movement that is a ‘church in nightclub’ type of thing called Geno/Generation. Where you can express what you want, pray the way you want without feeling condemned just because you have tattoos or you’re drunk as hell the night before, plus getting a good coffee and snack before church, haha. I like to call myself an apostolic barbarian. 2012 resolution? Tidy up this crazy idea of building new businesses in public relations, media, production, travel and villa management with some good friends. Keep eating good food, getting married. Hahahaha. Shout Out Happy to be around good creative people, grind and blend in it. Blessed is The Beat for being the pioneer. We’re all loved, let us not worry. Jah will provide.

www.beatmag.com

So how did you start your career? I started to break dance with a crew in a mall where the security hassled the crew members the whole time. Then I applied as an announcer at Radio Plus (now The Beat Radio Plus) and it all came from there. I had the chance to develop my creative side as a radio music director and script writer, later worked at The Beat as freelance writer and photographer, then I was hired by a major Malaysian record label company as an A&R. I met some big ass major label people and learned the music industry. I worked on my photography stuff and business development.

Working as the marketing genius behind hu’u bar, Janne certainly has a lot to say about hu’u, Bali, and other matters. You can catch her most busy nights making sure everything is running smoothly in one of Bali’s top venues.

Describe hu’u bar in one sentence. A home to the hu’u family, a place where the world meets. Describe yourself in one sentence. Enthusiastic, idealist, recalcitrant, spontaneous, emphatic, straight to the point, busy, and very Dutch. I’ve always wondered what was up with the name “hu’u bar”. Why is the hu’u in lower case? Please enlighten me. Your wondering answers your question. It’s different, people wonder why, and it stays in their mind. hu’u is named after a magical atoll off Sumbawa, known by surfers for some of the best waves in the world. What the craziest thing you’ve ever seen happen at hu’u? That would be the Peaches’ gig. Everybody that was there knows what I’m referring to. What is the best show that you’ve ever seen there? DJ Karizma, he is absolutely amazing. His performances were fantastic. The best tunes and vibes I’ve ever experienced. Paris Hilton raging at hu’u was also an unforgettable, however slightly different, night. What do you most love about being in Bali? It’s the joy that comes with this island. The purity, the smiles, the smells and the feel. It’s a feel-good place where numerous cultures, habits and people live together and all respect each others’ beliefs.

www.beatmag.com

If you weren’t doing marketing, what do you see yourself doing? I’d be doing charity work or start my own foundation. Name one thing that would make your Bali experience exponentially better? My Bali experience is fine, really. It does make me sad to see how many people in Bali still need help though. Are you a dog person or a cat person and why? Tricky one, my dog is the size of a cat! But, if

I’d have to pick, dogs. They follow commands, haha. Tell me a crazy story about working the door at hu’u bar. Ah, where to start… I’ve had people yell at me, try to punch me and try to kiss me. You’re looking at these questions on a screen, what is on the left of the screen and how would you use it to survive on a deserted island? My colleague Bagus is! He would definitely be helpful. I’d use his fluorescent pink t-shirt as an SOS-flag. What is your idea of perfect happiness? You create your own happiness. Smile at life, it’ll smile back at you. Live life with no regrets, appreciate the small things, understand that life is transient: good, but also bad moments will pass. Bad experiences are worth at least as much as the good ones, they will make you grow as a person. As for me, I have one happy soul. What amazing things can we expect to see at hu’u this year? We have so much happening this year! We’re going to have some Big Name DJ’s perform. The restaurant is going through some changes menuwise and layout-wise and we have our residences opening this year. Stay tuned. What do you think of the Republican candidates in this year’s US primary elections? Haha, you do know I’m Dutch, don’t you! I personally can find myself more in what the Democrats stand for. Which is better, brunettes or blondes? Please explain. As part of the only 2 percent of the entire world population that is naturally blonde, I’d definitely go for the blondes! Blondes have more fun, right?

It’s Like a $2-Store on Steroids

Well, those days are now over. New and much more spiritually draining ways of getting your hands on classic Balinese souvenirs have in the past few years sprouted up along the length of periodical car park Jalan Sunset. Oleh-Oleh Khas Bali (Unique Balinese Souvenirs) supercenters have everything a Bintang-singlet-clad mister-mister might need at rock-bottom prices. From kites in any make or model (as long as the make is a butterfly or a sail boat) to heavily lacquered model surfboards, ranging from the pocket-sized surfboard key ring to the two-foot-tall “God-knowswhere-I’m-going-to-put-this-thing” model. Easily identified by the endless procession of tourist coaches filing into their car parks, these megamarts of “authentic” Balinese culture have managed to corner the souvenir market, paying commissions to tourism operators willing to herd their charges into the caverns of kitsch. Bus driver Gusti said he brought at least one coach load of tourists to the Kampung Nusantara souvenir superstore each day during high season. “We usually bring tourists from Jakarta here, sometimes Koreans or Chinese”, he said. “They buy a lot”. Upon entering Kampung Nusantara past the 7-foottall carved wooden penis standing sentinel at the front door, seasoned Bali-goers might experience waves of nostalgia walking down aisle upon endless aisle of every imaginable piece of Bali tackiness. Canvas after canvas of topless Balinese women bathing in a river; shelves of woven sandals stretching as far as the eye can see; wall-to-wall displays of “I Y Bali” bags, t-shirts, sarongs, stubbie-holders, beach towels and baseball caps.

But it’s the pieces that make the least sense that catch my eye. Carvings of Balinese dancers that would not look out of place in the lobby of a two star hotel are juxtaposed beside medieval knights crudely cobbled together from what look like discarded number plates. Authentic-looking wayang-kulit (shadow puppets) pose next to what could only be described as a tomahawk made from the shoulder blade of a cow. Walking down what seems like hundreds of labyrinthine aisles distracted by musings as to who in the world would be stupid enough to buy anything from these stores I bump into Ketut, a hawker who operates along Kuta beach. “This is the cheapest place to buy trinkets,” he said cheerfully, “I can sell these dancers to bule for 10 times the price out on the street”. Looking around, I all of a sudden notice a distinct lack of bule in Kampung Nusantara. “Why don’t the bule just come here for oleh-oleh,” I ask Ketut, who shrugs laconically in reply. I’m hit with an epiphany. Almost every sunburned tourist at Denpasar Airport’s International Terminal leaves the island carrying at least one of the items sold at any one of these superstores. Most likely a sarong sold to them at a 1000 per cent mark up by a comically brusque hawker just like Ketut, and I’m asking myself who in their right mind would shop for souvenirs here? So if you’re looking for a present for someone back home you don’t really like, or an ironically terrible hat you’ll wear only once before coming to your senses, don’t be ripped off on the beach or street. Oleh-oleh khas Bali megastores are your one-stop-shop for the kitschest of the kitsch that Bali has to offer. Wayan Llesnam

www.beatmag.com

O

nce, tourists visiting Bali would have to wait patiently for a hawker on Kuta Beach to politely approach them as they were minding their own business before being bombarded with Rastafarian dreadlock beanies, penis-shaped bottle openers and “authentic” Rolexes.

Fear the Beast, the Demon, or the drug Lord? By: @JohanJT

Beasts and vampires from the underworld, an invisible hostile demon, or simply some brutal mobster bosses, each of you might find one or maybe all of them, which is something you never want to encounter in life. Face the fear or forever be afraid they say. Fear is better overcome when there’s some cool action, special effects and camera work. Let’s hit www.blitzmegaplex.com and www.21cineplex.com!

Underworld: Awakening Action, Fantasy. Directors: Måns Mårlind, Björn Stein. Writers: Len Wiseman, Jon Hlavin, Allison Burnett. Cast: Kate Beckinsale, Stephen Rea, Michael Ealy, India Eisley, Theo James.

The opening scene in its official trailer shows Selene (Kate Beckinsale) falling off the top of a skyscraper and landing on her feet like a cat definitely got your attention, right? After the third film, which was a prequel proved quite disappointing to fans, Underworld is bringing you back that sexy vampire warrioress and a bunch of werewolves battling in all-out war against human forces. With all the underworldly weapons and lycan transformation brought to you in 3D special effects, this installment to the series franchise is much anticipated. All you wanted to know from previous films’ silver linings will be answered and will make sense to you. So get prepared for those fangs, beastly claws and guns popping out from cinema screen!

Paranormal Activity 3 Horror, Mystery. Directors: Henry Joost, Ariel Schulman. Writer: Christopher Landon. Cast: Chloe Csengery, Jessica Tyler Brown and Christopher Nicholas Smith, Lauren Bittner.

Still curious about the reason why Katie and Kristi are haunted in the first place? In this sequel, you’ll be shown a bunch of Betamax videos recorded in 1988 during these sisters’ childhood when younger Kristi befriended an invisible demonic entity who resides in their home. The secret to what is that entity and why it is following them will be answered. Sticking with its handycam-shot style, Paranormal Activity 3 will serve you more creative and unpredictable camera angles of which you’d close your eyes at every turn, more hostile and sudden “pranks” by the invisible “it”. The Roots Undun

Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder

U

ndun is The Roots’ latest project, and it is a concept album. It tells the tale of a man, Redford Stevens, dying in reverse, rewinding from the moment he became a statistic and hitting the points in his life where he’s at his most self-aware. Redford Stevens, a fictional young adult who is plagued by crime and tragedy growing up in a dangerous and hopeless environment that, in turn, represents our society today. All in reverse narrative. Even if you are a seasoned Roots veteran, Undun will challenge you, or any listener. Every line is a clue, every song is a story; each are all pieces to the young Stevens’ tragic life.

www.beatmag.com

Lyrics are of the highest caliber on this album, and from the somber “The Otherside” (“Playing with the fire/ That burned my boy”), to the forceful “Stomp” (“The wheels spin/ I’m looking for a sacrificial lamb”), and the selfreflective “I Remember” (“I’m looking back/ And y’all look the same/ Troy, Mark, and little/ What’s-his-name”), every line has a purpose. Everything is done for a reason on a Roots album. To avoid spoiling it completely, I will not dig into each and every song and analyze. Every track has its own message and paints its own picture to the story of Redford Stevens – all open to interpretation. That’s what makes Undun so fascinating. It’s like a badass jigsaw puzzle. What a line and a song can represent and how it can differ from opinion to opinion. Above all, it’s all about how it sounds, and that’s the other half of the fun. The Roots have never made a bad album, and this isn’t the first. Being Jimmy Fallon’s house band has been glorified practice for the group, and the instrumentation is sharper than ever here. It’s going to take some time, dedication, and lyric looking-up to fully understand the album. The more you listen, the more you love. The last four songs (“Redford” to “Finality”) are all instrumental, each shorter than two minutes, surely pushing Hip-Hop fans to the edge. The album is melancholy and at times perplexing, and the concept does limit The Roots from being the lively, jam session band we love. But this may be the most intimate project The Roots have ever made. And that’s saying something. This isn’t the Roots’ most accessible album, and it’s certainly their most downbeat, but it comes from a place that isn’t always easy to dwell. [DJ Squared]

These cufflinks are either the ultimate in 007 gear for the average man or the geekiest cufflinks on the planet. Either way, they’re at least dead useful, unlike normal pairs. Brookstone’s polished silver cufflinks each hide a USB drive that offers 2GB of storage and Wi-Fi hotspot capability. Something this small isn’t going to generate Internet for you like a phone. Instead it connects to a computer and, via a free software download, can re-transmit the machine’s Wi-Fi, creating another hotspot. www.cufflinks.com $ 249.

The Stationary Epicycle This is the stationary bicycle that uses an epicyclic transmission and magnetic resistance to provide intensive s p i n n i n g w o r k o u t s . Inspired by 19th-century monowheels, its dualsatellite transmission translates a single pedal revolution into four flywheel rotationsthus a rider spinning at 100 rpms causes the flywheel to spin at 400 rpms. The flywheel engages the cycle’s 36” diameter copper ring; six magnets installed around the ring’s enclosure work with the ring to generate a magnetic field, providing 12 levels of resistance controlled by a touchscreen display. The carbon fiber handlebars adjust for comfortable reach, the padded Alacantra saddle adjusts to four positions (1/2”-8 1/4” range) for comfortable height, and each pedal’s large surface area keeps a greater portion of the foot in contact for more efficient pedaling. Salvita DeCorte & Naomi Samara Tell us a little bit about yourselves. Naomi: Mix-breed. Born and raised in Bali. Lived and studied in Thailand and Australia for a few years but now permanently based here. Salvita: 21. German, Indian, Indonesian. Born and raised in Bali. Do you draw a certain amount of influence from any particular artist? Naomi: Too many. Artists who produce delicate but fearless work. Frida Kahlo and writer/poet Anais Nin are the first two that come to mind. Salvita: I grew up watching my dad and mum paint. They both have very different styles and I can definitely see both of their influences in some of my paintings. How often do you two collaborate? Naomi: For the past few months we’ve had a lot of fun painting in Sal’s studio most weekends.

www.beatmag.com

Your subjects are naturally quite feminine, is there any particular reason for that? Naomi: I’m a woman in a family full of women. At this point in time, I paint what is closest to me. Who influences the female forms in your paintings? Naomi: Most of the female forms are self portraits… I draw a lot of inspiration from my grandmother who was a painter. She also explored the same subject.

Salvita: Me :) and other females. A lot of them are self-portraits but some of the faces I paint, I don’t even know who they are. Most of the faces look very similar to each other, but they just come out like that naturally. When did art first come into your life? Naomi: I come from a family of crazy artists so creativity has been encouraged throughout childhood. Salvita: Ever since I was born, I remember getting a huge wall (it seemed huge maybe ‘cuz I was tiny) in the house when I could barely walk. My mum allowed me to draw on it all I wanted, it was the best present ever!!! I also grew up with both of my parents being very creative. Do you feel like you’ve matured as an artist throughout your life? Explain. Naomi: Thats a funny question to ask a 22 year old :) Of course not, there’s still a lot of growing to do. It’s an exciting thought. Salvita: No, I’m only 21. Got a long way to go, a lot of exploring! But I can definitely see the changes from my previous work and my work now, it’s like different phases. What do you do when you’re not painting? Naomi: I work in Jenggala (a ceramic company located in Jimbaran) as their creative manager. Salvita: :) Hmm i model and work part time at the gallery. Oh, and I’m currently learning Spanish :p

The interior in Anantara Spa has a humbling simple look that radiates a peaceful coziness. Located on the top floor of the Anantara Hotel, the spa reception is situated in an open relaxed area overlooking the hotel and grounds. There are four rooms in total, two for couple’s massages and two for individual massages, each with a huge window and when clear, a beautiful view of the mountains. Each room has it’s own shower so you can have the full treatment within the comfort of your own room.

FEEL

The Hot Stone Massage is one of the newest body treatments they offer. The treatment embraces a traditional Balinese massage with the addition of hot stones and comprises of a five-minute refreshing flower foot bath with sea salt and peppermint extract, an aromatic traditional massage with a selection of massage oils to choose from, and hot stones gently placed on different sections of your body as you receive the most tender yet firm massage with the incorporation of the hot stones, taking all of your tension away. When you are receiving treatment to the front of your body, the hot stones are placed over a mask on your face creating a warm therapeutic feel.

INGREDIENTS

There are a few massage oils for you to choose, from Vanilla Magic to Vetiver Grass, and array of body scrubs, lulurs and body conditioners from Natural Yoghurt to Carrot Conditioners.

MAGIC

Each stage in the treatment has a beneficial and satisfying feel. The sea salt in the foot bath/massage exfoliates the dead skin cells and the peppermint extract is used as an antiseptic. The full body hot stone massage lets you relax and release tension and is great for someone who is sick with a flu or cold. The massage oils and skin conditioners leave your skin feeling soft and completely refreshed.

If you want to live in far more exotic times or rake in a little history with a dash of luxury, Tugu hotel might be the place for you. Part resort, part museum, those who would like to experience a more enriching time in Bali will surely enjoy the Tugu.

Location

The Tugu is located right in front of Canggu’s Batu Bolong beach and is a great getaway from the hustle and bustle of Seminyak and Kuta. A few exceptional surf breaks are located nearby and Echo beach, also nearby, offers a little eat street with a variety of restaurants to choose from.

www.beatmag.com

Look

Everything in Tugu is styled after something in Indonesia’s past whether it’s ancient Chinese sculptures, Majapahit era artifacts or colonial Dutch accents. The hotel is a classic pavilion with gardens separating the rooms and lobby as well as other common areas. Multiple dining spaces give a sense of intimacy throughout. Each area seems to have a historical theme with careful authenticity akin to an expertly curated museum. The greatest thing about the hotel is that you can truly experience the vastly different periods of Indonesian history with all the luxury of a classy hotel.

Atmosphere

Historical authenticity does not have to clash with comfort and Tugu has managed to blend the two almost immaculately. Sure, Walter Spies probably didn’t live with satellite TV and air conditioning,

but that doesn’t mean you don’t have to when you’re at the Tugu. The Canggu beachfront location and lush tropical gardens mingle with the hotel’s generous use of ponds adds a certain serenity when walking the grounds.

Features

All rooms are equipped with a flat screen television hooked up to a DVD player and satellite receiver. They also feature a bathtub, a safe, hair dryer, mini bar and air conditioning. A yoga studio and multiple spa locations only adds to the facilities. The hotel has many private dining rooms and would make a perfect retreat for a romantic dinner especially with Valentines around the corner.

Price

Suites begin at USD 360 with themed mid level suites priced at USD 490 per night and the Le Mayeur villa goes for USD 600.

Which is the worst: (a) People rushing into a lift so that you can’t get out; (b) drivers not letting you in from a side road to a traffic queue; (c) people walking extremely slowly, six abreast, along a shopping mall walkway so you can’t get past?

High-pressure living in large urban centers seems to bring out the worst in us. Is there any way we can avoid it?

The answer is they’re all as bad as each other and probably occur with equal frequency. What’s worse, we’re probably all guilty of committing one or more of these lapses in politeness from time to time, whether or not we’re consciously aware of it. Living in a big city like Jakarta, everyone seems to be in a hurry to get somewhere, whether it’s drivers competing for the same stretch of increasingly precious road space or passengers jostling with each other to board a Transjakarta busway vehicle. Time, as they say, is money, and nowhere is this more noticeable than in places where large numbers of people find themselves in tight proximity to each other.

available at post offices. The present-day equivalent is people subtlely trying to sneak in front of you in the queue at the airport checkin desk. Luckily, queueing culture has now become well established, and it’s noticeable that younger people are not often guilty of any of the above offences. What’s really annoying, though, is that centralised queueing, especially at banks, is rarely used so you’re left, for example, with guessing which of four queues will move the fastest.

As for asking for information about an item before buying it in a busy shop, don’t even think about it, just buy it quickly and move on ... In Jakarta, one of the most annoying examples of rudeness used to occur at post offices where some people, seemingly unaware that others were already ahead of them patiently waiting, would push their way to the desk, demanding they be served immediately. Only the more self-confident counter clerks would have the courage to ask them to line up. These days it doesn’t seem to happen so much but that may be because, in the internet age, fewer people find the need to use the services

Visit smaller cities or more rural locations and you’ll notice just how more polite and friendly everyone seems to be. That is equally as true in the West as it is here. The slower pace of life seems to have a calming effect on everyone, and there’s a lot to be said for the beneficial impact of spending time in such places whenever possible – “chilling out,” in modern parlance. Back in “the smoke”, at restaurants or cafes local people sometimes complain that expatriates seem to be waited on more conscientiously by service staff, as if they were motivated by a belief that such people somehow “deserved” it. Conversely, if a bule (Caucasian) man takes his Indonesian wife or girlfriend out, the couple may well be subject to humiliating stares and the woman made to feel that somehow she’s a second-class citizen. But let’s not go there, that could be the subject of another article in its own right ... (Jim Read)

Just look at the behavior of urbanites in Singapore or Hong Kong: Woe betide anyone who gets in the way of office workers in Orchard or Central on the dot of midday when a human juggernaut makes it way to a variety of dining venues, only to return some 45 minutes later for the workers concerned to be back at their desks before lunch hour is over.

Inevitably, Murphy’s Law comes into play and you end up in the slowest-moving queue, wondering whether it’s worth the risk of joining the tail end of another one that seems to be moving faster...

In Space with Wezz Devall

lligals Club kembali menampilkan DJ internasional dalam acara ‘In Space’. Keren! Illigals Club presented another international DJ in their ‘In Space’ event last week. This time it was Wezz Devall, who came all the way from Holland and lit up the decks and the floor at Illigals. After DJ Roni Joni, Wezz Devall started the show with some electro and tech tunes, the crowd filled the floor straightaway, with some of them trying to take his picture. The DJ who was previously half of the duo Wezz & Fischer later played some progressive and trance tracks that he is most noted for. People at the venue were really hypnotized by his music. Very Cool!
