The Beat is available FOC in 260 locations around Bali and Jakarta’s airport lounges and selected nightlife venues. Check beatmag.com for more details of where the beat is available.

I’m not sure if you have noticed but we have been making some subtle changes in the content and lay out of the beat in recent editions. There’s nothing like having new blood around. In this edition we have made more with the advent of the new separate Mainstage and What’s On sections. After what we felt as being too much info going into the Whats On section we’ve split them up to make it easier to navigate – hopefully. Let us know what you think of the changes by sending an email to editor@ beatmag.com. We’re always happy to hear from you. So Bali keeps on rolling along. After Valentine’s Day last week we are looking at a very busy period coming our way again. What is it, the middle of February? Last week we had John Digweed, this week we have The Orb Soundsystem, Bomb the Bass, Sampology (all at the same show), Ibiza locals Harry Choo Choo Romero and Jonathon Ulysses in da House, a few national bands playing live and UK rock outfit You Me At Six Live doing their thing down in Kuta. There is plenty on and of course you can check it in the Mainstage, What’s On and the HereNow sections. This week’s VIP Card member’s thoughts on the beat magazine I find the beatmag to be a very professional media outlet that always keeps me up to date with what is happening on the island in all areas of entertainment and food. Keep up the great work! Cheers. Travis I am always interested to find out who’s playing where and when my main focus is music and food. So your magazine is always good reading...I have many friends who come to Bali for holidays and they always want to know where to eat and where to go to listen to good music. So your VIP card would be wonderful as I seem to be the one paying the bill hahaha. Susan This my comment n may be ɑ lil bit story :)) around 2003 or 2004 me n my sister stay in Bali for ɑ month n that the 1st time we read the beat magz. The map n information about places to hang out n food was really helpfull for us :D The most I like now is the food review and all the directory to restaurant, and shops all around Bali :D Yesterday my husband and I just visited Ubud using the map in the beat magazine.. So once again thank you the beat :)) -jeany-

Hu’u Bar Does a Dragonfly Nyepi Again

s c o o p

020

Last year at this time, hu’u bar took on Jakarta at their own partying game and came home triumphant in a blaze of glory filling Jakarta’s number one nightclub venue, Dragonfly to the rim on the night of Nyepi, which is a public holiday in the big smoke. It’s on again this year, same venue and same public holiday, Nyepi (Well actually, it’s the day after Nyepi, Saturday March 24). The Beat and FRV Travel are also honoured to be part of the show and with classic hu’u style entertainment from DJ Golddigger and hosts from Bali’s own hu’u bar, the night is guaranteed to be another winner. Check Aston Rasuna in Jakarta for accommodation options, as they are involved in the event too.

Spirit Fest Oh yes, it’s almost that special time of the year when Bali Spirit Festival and you can feel some positive vibrations from a truly special five days (March 28-April 1)of something good and alternative. So this year’s line-up will include the following big acts: Rocky Duwanti-A top 10 CNN Africa Music Artist, Duwanti’s socially conscious reggae has been used as a medium for social change ranging from raising awareness to changing lives. He’s been described as Africa’s Bob Marley. The Ghanaian has founded his own NGO and has worked with UNICEF along with other organizations. Dave Stringer- This singer and recording artist is known for his music, which is a mixed gumbo of Indian chants, soul, rock and gospel. He has been profiled in both Billboard and Time magazine to name a few. Luminaries- A California hip hop group that promotes peace, the Luminaries were drawn to the Festival’s themes of social action and general positivity. Delhi 2 Dublin- This eclectic band is formed by a motley group of musicians that successfully fuse Indian and Irish influences into a highly energetic show. Our writer, Rusty Shackleford, had a near religious experience after watching one of their concerts.

Sure, it isn’t purely a proper charity and it is a business model, but at least poor kids don’t have to walk around without clothing. Rusty

I just recently got an iphone 4 from the United States from my Dad who upgraded to the iphone 4s. He got it from AT&T through a plan at a very inexpensive price. If you know anything about the AT&T and Apple relationship, you probably already know that this story will most likely end in tears. For those who don’t, let this be a cautionary tale full of sorrow and joy and back again to eventual sorrow. It all started with a slip in the mail that said my package couldn’t be delivered and I would have to make a trip to the main post office located in Renon. I resolutely went there to find that I had some tax to pay for my new package to the tune of about Rp 700,000. Apparently, any goods sent though the mail valued over $50 is taxed 25%... good to know. So after going to the ATM and pulling out a small wad of cash, I returned to dutifully pay my duty on my new luxury item. They asked for ID, and mine

happened to be expired for about a month so they looked at the picture to confirm it was me, looked at the name to make sure that it matched the name on the slip and logically told me they couldn’t accept my ID because it was expired. I tried to explain away why that was absurd, but they stood firm and I was forced to walk to the backroom with an unpaid slip. Long story short, I still had that wad of cash in my hand, and I left with my iphone 4 and a very satisfied grin of a victorious con man on my face... sans cash. I took my new found piece of electronic treasure to an Apple store to get it unlocked so that I could use the Telkomsel network and talk away blissfully with my new amazing phone. I gave it to their iphone specialist who took a brief look at it. He put it down looked away, pretended to do something else, then grimly turned to me the way a doctor would tell a cancer patient that things weren’t going to be good. He said the firmware was “4.11.08” and there was nothing he could do and nothing anyone could do

and that he was very sorry for my loss. He gritted his teeth, looked me in the eye and handed me my now glorified itouch back to me. Devastated, I automatically went into the five stages of grief. I thought, I’ll just look it up online, some enterprising Chinaman hacker has surely found a solution. After trolling the net for hours, my denial turned into anger. Why the hell would Apple and AT&T do this? Those greedy bastards! After I settled down a friend noticed that I had a new iphone 4 and enthusiastically said he knew someone who could unlock it. I told him I’d give his friend anything he wanted. I was in the bargaining stage. But it was of no use. The dreaded 4.11.08 firmware had a death grip on my phone much like an incurable disease leads someone to eventual death. I was overcome with depression. I reverted back to my useless phone and it just felt like a bunch of coke cans pressed together to make a retarded phone. It somehow sounded worse too. It’s OK though, I’m knee deep in the acceptance phase. I own this really awesome phone that I can’t use and I am chastened by the whole ugly experience. My friend is still trying to solve it, he talked about using an older version of itunes to revert to the old baseline on the firmware so that he could change the OS and hopefully jailbreak and carrier unlock the phone. I stared at him and respectfully nodded like I knew what was going on. I guess I’m still holding on to hope, hope that they might someday find a cure for the dreaded 4.11.08.

Timeline

Tim Simenon’s work has gone through many permutations throughout the years. He, along with a few other collaborators, use the name Bomb the Bass and this is his timeline of fame.

1967

Born June 21, 1967 in Brixton, London

1987

Mid ‘80s began DJing in London’s Wag Club

1988 Into the Dragon

1991

Bomb the Bass was deemed controversial by unofficial regulations during the first Gulf War due to its title and the single Love So True was put under the Tim Simeon moniker. With the Bomb the Bass name reinstated, Unknown Territory was released and is considered the most well received album to date and would spawn the trip hop genre.

1993

Produces Bjork’s Play Dead which was her first chart success and started her career.

1995

Releases Clear which has a more conventional song structure and a darker tone.

1997

Produces Depeche Mode’s Ultra which went straight on to UK charts at number one, selling 40,000 copies in its first week alone.

2000

Launches Amsterdam based record label Electric Tones.

2008

The long-awaited Future Chaos album hits the shelves with a cleaner more analog sound

2010

Releases Back to Light which may suggest that Simenon is truly back… Bomb the Bass will be performing a 25th anniversary live show (1987 2012) at KBBB on Saturday February 18 and playing a DJ set at The Ultimate Recovery at Nammos Sunday February 19.

Bjork

Clear

Releases Beat Dis as Bomb the Bass which goes on to reach #1 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart. Following the success of Beat Dis, Bomb da Bass appears on the cover of NME which catapults him as perhaps the first superstar DJ and coining DJ culture. Releases Into the Dragon which features three additional tracks that charts into the top 10 on the UK Charts.

the Orb Karma beach | saturday 18 february

Roots:

Started in 1988 after Alex Paterson and KLF member Jimmy Cauty met, the Orb has its foundations playing ambient dub in London clubs. Some of their first performances were heavily influenced by electronic and ambient music for the 70s and 80s such as Kraftwerk and Brian Eno. They were well known in the music scene for their trippy science fiction-like sound and have gone through a number of personnel changes with Paterson being the only original member.

Sound:

Dub, chill out, ambient house and techno.

Where You Might Have Heard Them:

The Orb’s biggest success was in Britain in the early 90s when they released their albums The Orb’s Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld and U.F.Orb which managed to peak at #1 on the British album charts in 1992. They were also featured in BBC’s Top of the Pops where they made an infamously trippy appearance. With 12 albums throughout their lifetime and a ton of very unique audio/visual shows, you might have had a taste without even knowing it.

www.beatmag.com

Why See Them:

The Orb is well known for their crazy shows and has been described as the Pink Floyd of the electronic world. You want to see some seriously trippy stuff along with ambient music infused with a heavy dose of sci-fi, this is the show you do not want to miss. Check them out with a host of other huge acts at the Audio Visual Feast at Karma Beach on Saturday February 18 and a DJ set at the Ultimate Recovery on Sunday February 19.

joey negro hu’u | SATURday 25 february Roots:

Dave Lee, better known as Joey Negro, grew up on the south coast of England in the late 70s and early 80s listening to the sounds of soul, funk and disco. He wasn’t very impressed with the quality of music in his area during the time, so he started digging in the crates of record shops in London. It was in those record shops where he found himself to be most comfortable and most inspired. His first records were stimulated from the sounds of ‘I Can Feel It’ and ‘Jack Your Body’ - well-regarded house classics of the time. Then in about 1990, he released ‘Do You Believe It’ on Nu Groove Records, and not being able to think of a name off the top of his head to press for the record, he took the name from two records which just happened to be piled next to his work desk at the time – a record by Pal Joey and one by J Walter Negro. Since then, he has been recognized as Joey Negro, a master producer, DJ and remixer.

Sound: Rare disco, vocal house, classic house, electronic, techy deep house.

Where you might have heard of him:

www.beatmag.com

Acknowledged as a producer foremost, Joey Negro uses his skills on the decks as a platform for modifying and tweaking his own musical productions to a standard of the highest excellence. He has been involved in hundreds of productions to date, dozens of albums, and a mountain of hit singles. From such popular releases like ‘Must Be The Music’, ‘Make A Move On Me’, ‘Can’t Get High With You’, he has established himself as a true industry professional with an incredible workethic who only keeps becoming more seasoned in his productions and methods. His expertise in everything to do with soul, funk and disco has paved his path to consult with international radio and television producers and his reputation as an accomplished producer and remixer has stemmed in numerous collaborations with such music moguls including Mariah Carey, Kelly Rowland, Royskopp, Sugababes, Empire of the Sun, Diana Ross, Pet Shop Boys, Simply Red, Lionel Ritchie, Roy Ayers , Robbie Williams, 911, Shayne Ward and Roisin Murphy.

Why see him:

I think his track record speaks for itself. Joey Negro is a producing legend and if you are a true disco or house fan, then you’d be silly to miss out on this event. His skills on the decks and his knowledge of music are unparalleled. Come check him out this Saturday at Hu’u.

cut chemist waterbom park | Sunday 26 february

Every once in a while an event comes along to really blow you away. Cut Chemist is one of those DJ’s that has the potential to truly move you. A master of cut’n’scratch, his style is as visual as it is audio, mesmerizing each and every member of the audience. Starting his career over two decades ago at the prodigious age of 11! Cut’s resumé reads like a who’s who of an entire era of music. The proclaimed virtuoso of decks shot to fame as a founding member of hip-hop group Jurassic 5 and Latin funk outfit Ozomatli, two hugely successful gigs he managed to run in tandem whilst putting together ground-breaking collaborations with scratch superstar DJ Shadow.

www.beatmag.com

Since going solo in 2006 with his first LP, The Audience Is Listening, Cut has proven his ability to push the boundaries of what exactly a DJ can do to wow crowds the world over. His explosive 2007 tour supporting Shakira was an exhibition of world music and visuals the scale of which had never before been seen. His passion for Afro-Brazilian sounds, rooted in Ethiopian, Columbian and Sudanese culture brings home to many that hip-hop owes its soul to the sounds of Africa. Now the turntablist brings his cut ‘n’ scratch live extravaganza, Sounds of the Police, to Bali for one night in support of Sounds of Life, which aims to raise awareness and funds for the selfless work of Robin Lim, whose Bumi Sehat clinics in Ubud and Aceh help underprivileged people through general health facilities and pre and postnatal support for new mothers. All ticket sales will go towards the construction of Lim’s new birthing clinic facility.

Sounds of Life: Sunday 26th February @ Waterbom Park.

Stay Cool,

080

Having lived in Bali on and off for the last 2 decades I’ve found myself becoming an unofficial tour guide, dispensing sage advice on the good, the bad and the ugly this island has to offer. Friends from back home planning a holiday in Bali regularly get in contact for tips on where to go and what to do.

“So, where in Bali do you live?” they inevitably ask. “Sanur” “Sah-noo-ah? Is that near Koodah?” *facepalm* While “Koodah, Leg-yan and Seeminn-yuck” these days get all the attention from the young and hip, Sanur has managed to cultivate an air of dignified cool. When the beaches of Kuta first started being pounded by waves of surfers in the 1960’s, it was Sanur

that attracted visiting ambassadors of cool like Mick Jagger and Sofia Loren. Bali’s art scene (no, not those dime-adozen oil paintings along Jl. Legian) owes a lot to Sanur, which was home to renowned Belgian painter Le Mayeur de Mepres and other expatriate artistes like Theo Meier. Alongside this expatriate community existed a string of Balinese master painters including Ida Bagus Nyoman Rai, whose works hang in galleries as far afield as the Australian National Gallery and the Museum der Kulturen in Switzerland.

f e a t u r e

081

It was Sanur’s pristine white beaches and sleepy atmosphere that first attracted the art community of the 1930’s and continues to attract people hoping to avoid the crowds, hard sells and traffic jams that have become the bane of the popular west coast. Over here on the east coast, Sanur provides a haven from everything loathsome about the Bali’s west. One can stroll the length of the main drag, Jl. Danau Tamblingan, virtually unaccosted besides the occasional honk from a cabbie. Or if walking isn’t your thing, Sanur’s green bemo system is a cheap and cheerful way of getting around. Kuta’s Bemo Corner is a relic of this system of transport, which was once popular in the tourist hub, but can now only be found up and down Danau Tamblingan, costing a very reasonable Rp 3,000.

Sanur Beach is itself hugely underrated. While Kuta Beach, basking in its former glory, dominates any reference of Bali, it is in fact Sanur that has the whitest sand and cleanest water found around the island. Protected by a huge offshore reef, the soft lapping of the tides makes it a perfect place to spend a lazy weekend floating on a lilo, sipping on a few cold beers and losing one’s self in just how perfect Bali can be. As for Bali’s favourite pastime, surfing in Sanur is also often overlooked. Hyatt Reef is a popular break

this time of year, with tour and fishing boats taking groups of board riders out at any one time. While just a few minutes drive north of Sanur is Ketewel, where a number of perfect, and often empty, surf breaks can be found by anyone willing to put in a little bit of extra effort. So there you have it. While Bali’s west coast appears to be becoming a victim of its own success, slowly choking on tourists, hawkers and infrastructure that is fast becoming totally unnavigable, Sanur keeps its cool. And what could be cooler than that? [Wayan Llesnam]

www.beatmag.com

It’s along Sanur’s main artery where the best eateries and retailers can be found. From Sanur institution Café Batujimbar and its hugely popular Sunday brunch markets to sleepy homestay/café Flashbacks and the new high-end restaurant Three Monkeys, everything a foody needs is just a short wander away.

There’s one local music veteran who’s “been there and done that”, but not that many people, yes you kids, have noticed. His name is Brozio Orah. Better known as “Zio”, more than a decade ago he made quite a buzz on a national scale with his band at that time, Hydra. One of the band’s songs was included in a compilation of the most popular independent bands by Sony Music Indonesia, Indie Ten. Not long after that, he evolved from upbeat pop rock to rockabilly. His next band, The Hydrant, was signed by EMI Indonesia and is considered a pioneer of the Indonesian rockabilly trend. A few years in the scene and with the lack of bright lights, the big city, fame and fortune, he decided to try his luck overseas playing in a Top 40 band. He didn’t stay very long and finally ended up back home and back doing his low key thing (probably because that’s how he is). He then created a brief-but-brilliant career in a jazz band. Currently, he’s again. Back in the spotlight with Dialog Dini Hari. Low profile, warm, likes to laugh a lot and not very loud, this bass virtuoso answers some questions from The Beat and keeping it short and sweet.

Your band’s album was just judged as one of the best albums of 2011 by one of the most prestigious magazines in Indonesia, Tempo. You think you deserve it? What’s so special about it? Haha… It’s not a music magazine, it’s more like a ‘serious’ magazine. Maybe because we are getting older so the people who appreciate us are more from the older and more serious crowd. No worries. We are of course very thankful. You have a very colorful CV. You caught the public’s attention by being a bassist in a rockabilly band, The Hydrant, and then you founded your own jazz band, and then you were involved in a folk-oriented band. What’s really your passion? Rockabilly, jazz, folk, or what? I guess I’m too soul for rockabilly, too rock for jazz and too alternative for folk... Can’t decide. I truly love them all! What’s the future plans with Dialog Dini Hari? New album soon, videoclip, tour? We are in the process of making of our third album. It’s going to be a mini album (EP).

www.beatmag.com

You and music, how did it start? My first instrument was the drums. I started playing it when I was 11 years old. I moved to bass in my high school era. Who are your favorite musicians? The Porcaro—Jeff, Steve, Mike—brothers, Sting, Nathan East, The Beatles, Jaco Pastorius... the list goes on and on...

What are your best albums of all-time? Ghost in The Machine - The Police, Aja - Steely Dan Breakin’ Away - Al Jarreau My Mother’s Hymn Book - Johnny Cash Isolation - Toto The Grease sound track. How do you see the future of music in Indonesia (and Bali)? If good, what’s so good about it? If bad, what’s your suggestion? Hmmmm.... I can’t see the future, it depend on us. Do we still believe in our music or not ? No matter what you call it. And i don’t have a suggestion for anyone. Speaking for my self, it’s “keep on groovin’ dudes!!!” Last question, other than music, these last few months you’ve also been busy managing Art Cafe. How do you like this other new job? How do you manage between music and managing a cafe business? Art Cafe has been around for almost three years now. It’s pretty amazing how I can juggle them, really. I don’t even know how I did it hahaha… Between music and managing the cafe, well, for me it is all about communication and timing. When there’s problems, discuss it with your partner, talk directly, no bull. And of course: a lot of hard work.

DJ Milinka f e a t u r e

Dance Cultural Ambassador

Jakarta born, and from Indonesian and Serbian parents, Milinka Mikaela Radisic, or better known in these parts as DJ Milinka, travelled to her father’s homeland this January. She was on a personal mission to meet her half-brothers and the rest of her Serbian family for the first time, but while she was there, doors opened fast in ways she never imagined and now she‘s come back to Indonesia as the cultural representative of both countries, and much more besides. David Trauts catches up with Milinka for a few words about the trip.

Milinka, how did you come to be in Serbia this year? I went to Serbia to meet my half brothers for the first time to talk to them about my dad.

www.beatmag.com

And what did you need to tell them about your dad? Well, he took off from Belgrade in ‘63 because of war and he moved to Austria, Germany, and Singapore, and came to Indonesia in ‘71 and met my mom. He couldn’t go back because of the war situation. And when it was possible to go back he passed away. That was 12 years ago. He couldn’t communicate with his family because some people were blocking his way to tell them that he actually cared and never stopped loving them. Both my brothers in Serbia thought that my dad never cared about them anymore, so they refused to communicate with us here in Indonesia (me, my sister and my brother). As a duty to my dad, I went there to explain this to them. And what happened when you arrived in Serbia? I arrived just in time as my eldest brother (Dragan) passed away a few days ago from cancer. I met him on my second last day in Serbia. I met my second brother (Slobodan) and his family on my 4th day in Serbia and everybody accepted me really well. The reason I only met my first brother Dragan on my second last day in Serbia was that they were afraid that Dragan didn’t want to see me. And he was dying. But it turned out that Dragan really welcomed me, he kissed and held me and cried with happiness. It was a tough day as I met him the first time in my life laying down so weak, dying and he was also very happy to see me and sad at the same time. I don’t think I will ever have the

same feelings as I did that day. We were all very happy and sad at the same time. Today (as I’m writing this) it is Dragan’s funeral in Serbia. Besides your family commitments over there what were your other plans? Did you take your music on the road and play some gigs? The Ambassador of Serbia in Jakarta supported me by promoting me in Serbia and I got offered to spin in a club there. I brought my music of course and was planning to gig around. But my time was not enough as I had to go back to Jakarta on January 26. The trip was actually to introduce myself to my own family, the people in Serbia, club owners and sponsors. I have many bookings for this summer and I’m planning to do a tour in a few cities in Serbia and East Europe. I think I established my name really well this time.

www.beatmag.com

You met someone well connected in the media and he spread your story around the news outlets in Serbia before you got there, right? What was all that about? Mr. Jovan Jovanovich (Serbian ambassador in Indonesia) introduced me to Mr. Ivan Zeljkovic. Ivan is a very famous TV producer in Serbia. He sent me an email offering help on my trip and was fascinated with my story so he got in touch with a few different people there. I met Ivan on the first night I was in Belgrade, and he gave me many contacts to all the media. My cousin Danica Radisic helped me a lot to connect and scheduled my interviews with them. For the first week I stayed at my cousin’s place. So did all those media connections prove fruitful? When the Indonesian embassy (KBRI) in Serbia found out that I was coming, they also asked me to come to KBRI to talk with the Indonesian Ambassador, Mr Samuel Samson about my trip to Serbia. It turned out that they really wanted to present me as a famous Indonesian artist in Serbia and explain about Indonesia to Serbians. Whenever I had an interview with the media, I was not only talking about myself but also Indonesia. And this is a big step for this country as I think I’m the only DJ who has ever been trusted by the government to be their representative in another country. They also called a very big magazine to interview me. And how was your music getting into the mix? On my second gig on January 23 at “Beograd

Promet” club, there was a group of about 20 people who came to see me from the Serbian and South Asia Association. A few of them were Serbian government people. They asked me to be involved in what they were doing. What did they want from you? They wanted me to help establish Serbia better in Asia, and if I could, to help change the mind-set that Serbians are somehow anti-Muslim like many people think after the Balkans conflict of the ‘90s. They know that I’m half Indonesian and my mom is Muslim from Aceh. In Serbia and East Europe my new duties are to represent and promote Indonesia to them and over here, the reverse. I’m now like a bridge between the two areas and now I have to learn a lot about them. I became a member of this group called the Indonesian and Serbian Committee on the last day I was in Serbia on January 26. I joined with my brother Slobodan. This group is developing the relationship for both countries to establish cooperation in many fields. Many businessman, scientists, professors came to the meeting and they are the member of this committee. In real terms what is the committee, or are you in particular, trying to develop between the two countries? I will be involved with the planning and implementation of many cultural and social aspects between the two countries. Things like sports, cultural exchanges, science and innovation, university exchanges and medium and small business cooperation. It sounds like you’ve come a long way in the past month. Will you still have time to spin tracks at this rate? Of course. Since I was really young I have done many things at the same time. I get used to it. I’m a workaholic. I get sick if I don’t do anything. I only have to think twice as smart how to do it without losing the duty to myself as a DJ, producer and promoter and the duty to my daughter as a mother. ;)

And to close things out something new from the sweets tray, Tres Leches Something New 35k. This dessert at Cubana consists of cake that has been saturated with milk, cream, condensed milk and a hint of Grand Marnier, and topped with vanilla whipped cream. According to the management at Cubana, these dishes are all traditional Cuban dishes. The pulled pork is on a bed of mofongo which is unique to Cuba. Mofongo uses plantains (type of banana) mixed with bacon and garlic to create a mash consistency. “Also the mojo sauce is a popular Cuban sauce which uses Orange, Roast Garlic, Oregano, B & W Pepper,” the manager told The Beat.

Trattoria

f o o d

095

This week, it’s a trip back to an old favourite on Eat Street – Trattoria Cucina Italia.

A couple of refreshing Margaritas (72k++) kick things off as we set about sharing a breasola rucola e grana (54k++), while surreptitiously making sure that the other one hasn’t snagged an unfair share of the awesome smoked beef slices.

How nice then to have a chance to revisit one of the original Eat Street institutions that is as reliable as a wood burning stove. Trattoria is surely the benchmark Italian restaurant in Bali, and without doubt everyone’s go-to spot when you’re all fusioned out.

For the mains, we follow the chef’s recommendation of the tangy penne all’arrabbiata (54k++), and the bocconcini di pollo con peperonata (77k++) – chunks of sautéed chicken with red and yellow peppers, onions and tomatoes. Both winners in my opinion.

So successful has Trattoria been that there are now multiple locations that have popped up around the island and beyond, with branches in Uluwatu, Jakarta, Medan, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and even Gili T. I’m also delighted to discover that a new Canggu Trattoria is on the way. Back on Lesmana, the décor is simple, unpretentious and, well, Italian – a concept that is reflected nicely in the expansive yet familiar menu of hearty home made pastas, pizzas, insalate, primi and secondi piatta, antipasti and dolce. Although I’ve come down for a review this is certainly not the first time I’ve been here, and quite frankly I could have written this one in my sleep, but nevertheless I arrived with my better half, fork in hand and ready to get stuck into a few dishes I’ve yet to have savoured.

For dessert we tuck into a bowl of classic Italian profiteroles - cream filled and chocolate sauce covered - we’re soon scraping the bowl clean. As is usually the case, the restaurant is filling up nicely, with punters queuing out the door despite the two separate Oberoi locations. Watching the cheery waitresses busily clear our table ready for the next diners, it’s clear too that the Trattoria formula really is a winner and continues being so. Ciao for now [Ashcroft]

Now that you’re old enough, these three films might tell you that sometimes something is better left undiscovered. An adventure to an amazing mythical island full of dangers? How about joining an expedition to Scandinavia to encounter a cold-blooded alien? Or gaining superpowers only to realize they can destroy your life?

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island Adventure, Fantasy, Action. Director: Brad Peyton. Writers: Brian Gunn, Mark Gunn. Cast: Josh Hutcherson, Dwayne Johnson, Vanessa Hudgens, Michael Caine, Luis Guzman.

Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson) must find his missing grandfather in a mythical island where strange creatures, gold mountains, and many secrets lie within. The Thing Sci-Fi, Mystery, Thriller. Director: Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.. Writers: Ronald D. Moore, Eric Heisserer. Cast: Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Ulrich Thomsen, Eric Christian Olsen.

Serving as a prelude to John Carpenter’s classic 1982 film of the same title, “The Thing” follows the expedition of Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winsted) who joins a Norwegian scientific team that stumbles across an extraterrestrial ship buried in the ice. When a simple experiment reanimates the alien, Kate must escape together with crew’s pilot, Carter (Joel Edgerton) to keep it from killing all of them. Nirvana

Live at the Paramount

Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder

N

irvana was just about to break into the world charts as this show was performed at Seattle’s Paramount Theatre. They had just released Nevermind, which a week after the show would reach the Top 40. Within a month it was Gold and less than a year later, it would become a multi-platinum selling album. “Smells Like Teen Spirit” had just been released too and was climbing on the Billboard chart at the same time. The gig was captured on 16mm film in its raw entirety and the band was, understandably, a little freaked out. Live at the Paramount is hearing and seeing the excitement of this moment in time. A great band on the make, still whirling and swamped with anxious adrenaline. Every single song on this setlist has already been featured once, or more, on some other Nirvana live record, bootleg or label. But it is still a priceless collection from a special time. Kurt’s voice sounds astonishingly powerful here. As quoted by Pitchfork, “He sang in a way that was obviously unmaintainable, even with the aid of heavy cough syrup, there’s an excitement and buzz, although a slightly selfish one, of hearing his voice rip the air before he had begin to shout it down to bits. His unusual, wailing vernacular may have been a deliberate choice, or it might have been the only way he managed to fight and hurl those notes out from a constricted voice box, but there is a horrible, captivating intensity to it. Words feel torn from him, dragging hooks on their way out. Aneursym’s Love you so much/ It makes me sick” physically hurts to hear, as it always has, but it gives you some of the most devoted, vibrant performances of Nirvana’s well-recognized songs as you’re likely to get.”

Similar to yogurt cultures, the enzyme breaks down all carbon bonds to destroy any organic matter, including mold, viruses, and pet dander. INNER RAINBOW

109

The Painting of Samarpan

Obviously, what is painted by Samarpan is less important than how he paints it. The intense interplay of lines and colors creates a dynamic impression of the soul. This dynamic poetically gives vitality to the images, making them look fresh and vibrating. However, this dynamism is almost magically contained in a controlled form. States of mind and emotional moods enter his paintings in a way that is like a refreshing drizzle creating a beautiful rainbow. Samarpan’s paintings are characterized by the presence of spatial illusion that rise from his sensitive ability to process color. Color policy is an important creative element that generates the suggestive power of his works. His paintings demonstrate the capacity of color to give birth to the plasticity of the meaningful visual artistic language. In his work, we feel as if there is a pulsating energy formed by his brush stroke and the layers of paint that create visual rhythms laden with meaning.

His use of the abstract form to express his reflections of life results in many profound questions. He does so because this is how he can best express the reality of his personal experience and vision. The depth and sensitivity of this expression, full of color and deep thought, rises above the limits of the canvas to reveal a deeply spiritual human being. Poetic and musical, Samarpan’s paintings are personal accounts about the liveliness of sensory perception, passionate feelings as well as thoughtful considerations reviving from an authentic experience about reality that astounds his soul. Samarpan’s paintings invite us to participate in a colorful journey from the “sight” to the “insight” he has kept hidden in his innermost mind. They allow us to fly with him to the wonderful land of imagination, to dream and see the world anew, and finally make us realize that we have wings too. His paintings tell us that by keeping our minds open to new experiences and adventures, we too can fly and discover our own hidden land in the “rainbow”. [Text: Arif Bagus Prasetyo]

Samarpan is German and studied art at the College for Art and Design, Cologne. He has lived between Cologne and Bali since 2005. His exhibition will be on opened at Tonyraka Art Gallery in Jl. Raya Mas 86, Mas, Ubud, Bali from Friday, 24 February 2012 at 6.30 pm. The exhibition will continue until 16 March 2012.

www.beatmag.com

L

ike a rainbow, the paintings of Samarpan are a form of visual beauty that is purely composed of lines and colors. Samarpan’s painting language relies on his state of mind. This language is quite perceptive and records feelings, thoughts, sensations and the emotions of the painter. The painter’s body, especially his outstretched arm move in the act of painting, actively translating mental conditions and sensory sensations into abstract compositions. We can imagine his paintings are an “inner rainbow”.

AWAYspa 24-hour spa invites a multitude of opportunities for a good pampering. You can get a treatment when you fly in, when you’re suffering a fit of insomnia, or after a big night of partying. This article naturally appearing in The Beat magazine can only mean that we had tried out the spa that never closes after a night of festivities. Normally one would go to the spa seeking relief from a hangover, we decided to take a step further and try to squeeze in a treatment before the hangover could get a foothold. Perhaps we were trying to practice some preventative medicine.

AWAY Spa at W Hotel

www.beatmag.com

Stumbling into the AWAY Spa is very much like stumbling onto a deck of the Starship Enterprise. If the Star Trek universe had awesome futuristic spas, they’d probably model them after the W’s. The interior was made up of pulsating and ever-changing lights that seemed to glow with a warm iridescent feel that instantly puts your mind in some sort of minor trancelike state. Clean lines and edges complete the futuristic look and I was certain that I had somehow managed to enter the future. Another thing that caught my attention was just how cordial and professional the staff were-even at 2.30 am. Forced to work at that hour, I would quite frankly be cranky and a little blasé, but the staff they were very chipper and handled protocol so perfectly that everything just eased along. Not only was the W Spa a starship, but it had an excellent crew on the bridge. I was led into the treatment room, walking through the dimly lit spa which was very welcoming at that hour. The room itself was very cool, much like the rest of the spa. Instead of looking at a bowl of flowers when face down, I was treated to an LCD screen. The music perfectly set the tone and by the time the therapist started, I had reached my own personal nirvana. Not much can be recollected from my trancelike state, but when it was over, I felt like a million bucks and was ready to hit the scene again with my new coat of essential oils. But it was already very late, and by the time I left the spa the night was over. Everything in the area was about to shut down. I headed home and a very deep and rewarding slumber followed. When I woke, I still had a hangover, but that late night treatment was probably the best spa treatment I had ever had on this island.

CLIO F

or the most part, short stay accommodations in Bali have a fairly uniform layout that typically looks very much the same. The newly expanded and refurbished Clio, just off Jl. Seminyak Raya down the gang from Cafe Moka, manages to break away from convention and succeeds in providing a unique experience in its 14 units including their newly built Sky Loft Apartments.

Location

The minute you enter Clio, you’re struck with a sudden feeling of being in a very modern mid century designer home somewhere in the American Northwest. The fusion of clean edges intermixed with an abundances of greenery give the illusion of lush natural beauty with all the comforts of something more minimalistic. Indeed, Clio has managed to fine tune a number of elements to make each unit a thing of comfort as well aesthetic beauty.

Look

Each unit possesses a mini bar, flat screen, cable, fiber optic wireless internet, ipod docks, and Blu-ray players. You can score Blu-ray movies in a library at the lobby.

Clio is conveniently tucked away in the middle of Seminyak. A handy walking distance from all that the area has to offer including cafes, restaurants, shops and beaches.

www.beatmag.com

Atmosphere

The first thing you’ll notice when walking onto the grounds of Clio are the distinctive living walls that seem to surround everything. Past that, everything else is positively contemporary with a hint of rustic charm and a dash of the industrial thrown in for good measure. They utilize space exceptionally well with each unit feeling roomy despite being almost fully enclosed.

Features

Price

The prices range from 500k for their studio units to 2.5 million for their two-bedroom Sky Loft per night.

Which side of the digital divide are you?

A

re you relieved or alarmed if denied access to Facebook? It probably depends on whether you’re under or over 45

Sleeping lightly, you’re unexpectedly awoken by some noise at 3.30am. What’s the first thing you do? If you turn on the light, glance at the bedside clock, turn off the light and try and get back to sleep, you’re probably over 45. If you turn to your smartphone (which you haven’t switched off for the night) to check your Facebook or e-mail account or if anything has arrived on BlackBerry Messenger (BBM), the chances are you’re under 45. These assertions are not the result of months of scientific research or detailed survey work but, rather, straightforward observation of behaviour, plus anecdotal evidence. What’s more, there are many under-45s with views more similar to their older counterparts and vice versa, so the digital divide is not as sharp as it might seem. Many of the younger generation, who were not even born at a time before the internet existed, find it hard to understand how anyone could possibly survive without Facebook and BBM access on a 24/7 basis. If, for any reason, they are unable to maintain contact via these two platforms for any length of time, they can become panicky, insecure, feel isolated and worry about what people may be saying behind their back.

friends on BBM. Before they disperse, they will also each have to take a group photo, which can then be uploaded to Facebook so their friends in cyberspace can keep track of what they’ve been doing. On the other hand, those from the older generation, who were perfectly happy to rely on the old-fashioned telephone or – amazing! – face-to-face contact for keeping in touch before the advent of the internet – and still do – take a dim view of the preoccupation with Facebook. It seems to take up so much time for its users to keep abreast of each other. The over-45s are not luddites, though, for most, if not all, use e-mail extensively at work and home and communicate routinely via text messaging. They may even be aware that a tweet is not just the sound made by a caged bird, and might even tweet occasionally themselves ... The reality is that the internet has become an indispensible communications medium for all of us. Unless you’ve been living in a cave for the last 20 years the chances are you are already well connected, digitally, one way or another. What ultimately determines the side of the digital divide you occupy is the extent to which you embrace the world of cyberspace and how much of your life it dominates. How many of those you would identify as a “friend” are virtual or real?

Robyn Sovia Soundslike

House, Electro, Dirty House, Tech House

Hail From

Jakarta, Indonesia

Millenium Executive Club | Wednesday 22 FEBRUARY | 11 pm Has Been

Her love of House music was the reason why Robyn Sovia learned how to mix CDs a few years ago. Besides House music, Robyn expanded her scope by learning about other forms of dance music, and also has been using the Ableton Live Set program. The result is that she’s mastered many genres from House, Electro until Dirty House, Tech House mixed with sensual elements. Robyn is not only good at mixing some tunes but she also can sing well, and she officially joined CuePlay Jakarta Management as one of their extraordinary talents. She has performed at many clubs in Jakarta and other cities like Triple Nine, Second Floor, Colors Pub Surabaya, Golden Palace Jambi.

Gareth Emery Soundslike Trance

Hail From

Southampton, England

Illigals Club | Saturday 25 FEBRUARY | 10 pm

Has Been

Gareth Emery or GTR started his music career in 2002 when his vinyl called ‘Nervous Breakdown’ was played by BBC radio. Emery has a music background that is a mix between trance and progressive, with the touch of elements like psy, tribal and techno that helps to add a more melodic touch to his music. But to make it simple, he calls his music trance. Gareth joined Five AM records before he finally launched his own record label called Garuda, which he took from Hindu mythology. His achievements can be seen through his very popular tracks that always reach the top of the world dance music charts since 2006 and his moment of promo glory came with a 7th place ranking in the DJ Mag world chart in 2010.

Gareth Emery currently is ranked 13th place in DJ Mag and he just celebrated the third anniversary of his record label, Garuda. He also just released his latest single called ‘Concrete Angel’ that is a collaboration with Christina Novelli. Gareth is busy touring the world and one of his stopovers will be on February 25 at Illigals Club Jakarta. He has performed here a few times before and his fans in Indonesia always look forward to his upcoming shows immensely.

Drum n bass and dubstep keeps growing. That was no different at Bassfest, a collaboration from the members of the Indonesian Bass Music Community. Marley was chosen as the venue of the event and the performers were combination of local and international DJs. DJ Jerome, Sixteen, Sanjion, and Random were the local acts that performed in the first series of Bassfest. The international line-up included DJ Shockone from Australia. With the support of 10,000 watts of electricity, the sound of drum n bass and dubstep that came from the speakers practically forced punters to dance. The show got even wilder when DFMC and DMZ provoked the crowd to dance even harder. That was a lot of good vibrations!
