The last few weeks in Bali were so busy with so many acts in town, it seemed like we were in the middle of the high season and not the deepest point of the low. John Digweed, a bunch of international scratching and old school hipsters at Karma Beach, a couple of foreign bands down in Kuta, a stash of international DJs at the new Sky Dome, and other international acts all over the place. Let me remind everyone again that it was the end of February, not the end of July, OK! Anyway, we have it all totally covered inside, if anyone didn’t manage to get there or got there and just can’t wait to re-live it in these pages of the beat. Plenty of pics, plenty of fun, plenty of dutch and new concept all over the shop! This week things kick off with the W’s first anniversary on Saturday afternoon with a Head Kandi sunset session, Jazz on Sunday at Hard Rock Café, and then we have a few pretty good Indonesian bands playing in Boshe and Akasaka. Maybe it’s not a bursting couple of weeks of nightlife coming our way but there’s sure to be a lot going on in the usually busy places around town. A hot topic on the beat daily this week was the ridiculous way people ride their motorbikes around town. This was in response to a story in the TBD about a young couple who were going to be married soon, dying in a head on collision on Jl. Majapahit in Kuta last weekend. The state of incompetence on the road isn’t very surprising really after experiencing recently how easy it is to get a motorcycle license in Denpasar where the only rule appears to be having enough cash in your pocket. And the fact of there being no drink driving rules to stop people driving under the influence, wouldn’t appear to help. These are the consequences of living in a place with no rules. You take the good with bad, folks. Get amongst the discussion by subscribing to the beat daily on beatmag.com. More from our VIP Card Members LOVE: - how fast you publish new photos, eg NYE photos were in Jan 6th issue - the offers for readers, eg VIP Key Ring - frequency of publication, compared to other mags - very wide distribution, to find the magazine DISLIKE: - small format, hence small pictures - Jakarta pages/info of no use or relevance to me /Richard Ernster beat magazine tells people about da latest happening sports in Bali n jkt which makes it easy for everyone to know whts happening around getting d discount card would b an added advantage as it makes people feel VIP. /Neha Naik – we didn’t send a VIP Card to Neha for obvious reasons.

Pandora Turning Heads in the UK’s Biggest Original Music Competition Max Aloisi of PANDORA BAND, a band based in Bali, has been wowing the judging panel of the UK’s biggest original music competition, and sailed through the audition stage of Live and Unsigned in the past month. Max and Pandora are now preparing for the Regional Final Showcase on 29th April 2012 at Hove Center Brighton UK for the opportunity to progress towards the Grand Final at Live Fest at The O2 in London. They have also been doing live shows in London, with the next one on this Wednesday 22nd February at The Island Notting Hill in London. This year’s competition also offers acts an extra chance for exposure as it’s being filmed for Sky TV in an exclusive fly-on-the-wall documentary. Since 50% of the voting is done through social media websites, it could be a good idea to get on the sites and like, follow or whatever it is to help the boys through. Balinese Receptionist Wins Award A proud Made Ayu Trisnadewi, or simply Trisna to her friends and colleagues, recently arrived back from Prague with the award for 2nd Runner Up in the International Receptionist Of The Year 2012 competition under her wing. She said at a press gathering at The Legian Hotel, last week, that she felt proud not just for herself but for her country Indonesia and the whole continent of Asia as Asians took out the top three positions in this worldwide competition for hotel front-liners. The finals of the competition in Prague brought together 14 contestants from around the world that had fought their way to the top of their respective countries and zones to compete in a role playing exercise in a mock-up hotel setting in a Prague hotel for the four days of competition. Each contestant was tested with varying role playing situations and a series of interviews which were overseen and reviewed by the judges. “This shows once again that the service industry in Asia is the best and particularly here in Bali,” said General Manager of The Legian Hotel Carla Petzold-Beck, the hotel where Trisna is employed on the front line. The “International Receptionist of The Year” competition is conducted every year having the objective to be a training tool for the younger generation, the future of the hospitality industry, with the emphasis on “Amicale” (friendliness).

Australian indie pop band Architecture in Helsinki is coming to Indonesia, the big durian in particular. The band is pretty well known in hipster circles and true to their indieness, they’ve never really ever made it high on any charts with the exception of their latest album Moment Bends which peaked at the 12 spot on the ARIA chart. Their sound is quirky and light with some very unique sounds. So if you’re into the indie pop, this band is probably worth the Jakarta trip. March 10 - Bengkel Night Park

eing an editor on this tropical paradise has its ups and downs. One definite negative is the sad fact that not everyone grew up speaking the same language printed in this 100 percent grammatically sound magazine. After a hard day’s proofing, I find myself looking at everything with a judgmental eye keen to find any spelling mistake I can find as proof that civilization is coming to an end. Then I found this gem of a photo from my dear friend’s Alfonze Carpentiero and Chi Chi Cigarillo which depicts an advertisement for a “nice villa”. I had a laugh. You should call them and ask how nice the chicken really is.

Michael Paulo hard rock cafe | Monday 5 march

Roots

Paulo grew up in Hawaii in a musical family, his father was a pianist and his mother was a singer; all his siblings were also trained to play a musical instrument. He discovered the sax at the age of 15 and began touring Indonesia a couple years later. He turned down a scholarship to attend the University of North Texas, electing to join a Hawaiin pop rock band Kalapana which found some success in Japan.

Sound

Saxy jazz

Where you might have heard of him

After moving to Los Angeles in 1981, Michael has teamed up with various producers and was a force to be reckoned with in the Jazz scene. He initially signed with MCA Records and put out One Passion which made it into the top ten contemporary jazz charts. His next release, Fusebox, also was a success and made it to the Billboard top 20 contemporary jazz charts. His holiday CD, Sax for Christmas was awarded a Hawaiian Grammy Hoku Award for best Jazz CD of the year. He has toured the world and played at numerous festivals. He even played for the Sultan Brunei and the Thai royal family.

www.beatmag.com

Why see him

If you’re into jazz, this is clearly the show for you. If you look at Paulo’s pedigree above, it’s pretty clear that he will most likely be one of the best jazz artists to blow his sax on this island.

Jockey Saputra akasaka | friday 9 march

Roots:

Talking about Jockey Saputra is almost the same as going to a lecture on Indonesian club history because Jockie is one of the legendary DJs in Indonesia’s dance music scene. Hailing from Jakarta, he started his career all the way back in the 80s and achieved a lot more success in 90s when dance music began hitting the mainstream.

Sound:

House, disco, dance music

Where You Might Have Heard him:

He has mastered many genres, from classic disco until funky house and with his consistant reputation,he was allowed to play at many clubs such as Ebony, Haze, Athena, Klymaxx, Dreams, Hailai, LBR Puncak, Subec Bali, Studio East Bandung and Surabaya. Most clubs were keen to have him as their resident DJ. Jockey, who has been nicknamed Dr. Beat, won first place in the Indonesian DJ Festival in 1986 and Asean DJ Festival in 1987. His compilation mix collection was recorded in the era of cassette tape until the era of laptops.

He’s been around for a long time and continues pumping up the jam. Jockey always finds a way to reinvent his performance like creating Cyber DJ Team that specializes in playing Indonesian funky house with other DJs. Jockey is also still performing actively in different events, from classic disco to latest technological music. One of those events is “Party No Limit” which will be held at Akasaka on March 9.

DJ Mikey huu | saturday 10 march | 11 pm

cocoon | Sunday 11 march | 3-8 pm

Mr Michelangelo Moran, tell us a little bit about yourself. I know you’re a DJ, but there’s just so much more to you.

www.beatmag.com

Hehe, a simple guy, living life how its supposed to be by having fun, working and most importantly enjoying what I do. Right now, I am DJing in a lot of clubs in Bali and Jakarta, which is my usual circuit. I love to travel, chilling, getting people together and having a good time. Workwise, In a nutshell, I co-founded GO-JEK with Nadiem Makarim, an official ojek transportation company in Jakarta, Indonesia. More info go to www.go-jek.com. I pretty much branded the company from the ground up - the logo, website, uniform, helmets, jackets, promotional materials, etc. I studied new media design and am currently freelancing on designing and coding websites, my work is exhibited on my website (www. michaelangelomoran.com). Lastly, I organize events under danceflo productions and also help out with my other event management team, Trigger Production whose website I also designed and coded. (www.triggerproduction.com). Last but not least, I opened for NE-YO and Far East Movement in 2011 in Jakarta.

You’re reading these questions on a screen, what’s directly left of the screen and how would you use it in a survival situation? To my left is my digital photo frame (I know, pretty boring haha) and also my guitar. Survival? Hmm I guess if I'm about to be attacked by someone or something, I'll distract it with my photo frame, throwing it to ‘em and saying 'yo check this out' and then dun dun dun you can guess what comes next… WHACK IT WITH MA GUITAR! hehe If you look at your itunes 25 most played tracks, what’s in position 4, 17, and 23? Be honest. Haha great questions. Number 4 is Katchafire - “Get Away”, Number 17 is Weekend Players “Into the Sun” and lastly 23 is Foreign Exchange - “Come Around”. How do you think the DJ game has changed since you started out? Wow, a lot has changed. Everyone wants to be a DJ now, you're a small fish in a very big pond. I started out with the real basics - VINYL! I believe that’s the one that really teaches the fundamentals, and that time I was spinning deep house. I moved to Jakarta in 2004 after college and hip hop was booming in all the clubs so I moved to CDs, was just easier when downloading all the tracks. In 2007 I moved to Serato since it was easier to organize all your tracks, download them and have them ready to play and I got sick and tired of burning CDs. In 2010, I switched to Traktor and that really changed everything. You

What’s the most annoying thing you need to put up with being a DJ in Indonesia? I'm pretty sure a lot of DJs can relate but requests have got to be one of the top three. Its OK if people are nice about it but often times you're DJing, you're dealing with a lot of drunken fools that wanna REALLY hear their track that they have at home and they can be really pushy about it. There are times when you don't even know the track they talking about and other times, you have it but you just want to play it later because its just going to disrupt your current flow. My take is this, we're working and by you requesting a track, you're basically telling us how to do our job. When the dance floor is rocking, just let us be. There have been incidents where they give you cash to play a certain song and I have refused their money and other incidents where they want to get into brawls and it gets pretty ugly. Some people just seriously need to chill out, it takes away from the idea of 'having a good time' if you know what I mean.

h e r e n o w

Woah this is challenging cause I don't cook and also I play a lot of different genres. Its kind of hard to base it off just one recipe. But in all my sounds and all my sets, its all about a journey from beginning to end that keeps your feet dancing. So here I go: Take fresh jalapeno peppers to start, you know you're talking business to start off your mix, ground beef for them fat ass baselines and beats, one egg to add some soul, steak sauce for the buildup, some dried oregano for the breaks, buns for them classic ol skool vocals, pepperjack cheese to keep it funky, salt, pepper and hot pepper sauce for the extra umphhh. Build that up together and what do you end up with? ONE FAT ASS JUICY BURGER! Of course served with some beer on the side to keep you loose goose :p

051

What is your absolute favorite post gig late night meal? You really can't go wrong with nasi goreng and it is definitely one of my favs… it’s greasy and so yummy after a night out, although probably not the healthiest of meals but then again you don't have a lot of options for healthy food at 4am hehe. The best places to go in Jakarta are Nasi Goreng Sabang and/or Dim Sum in Kemang. For Bali, I usually end up at some Padang joint or nasi pedes. What are you most looking forward to for your Hu’u gig on March 10? As I said before, I love getting peeps together and having a good time so the true essence of fun awaits. I'll be DJing with my boy Stan from Trigger, we definitely make an awesome dynamic duo and we'll be sure to drop some ol skool classic beats since we don't often hear that enough, so get ready for that. I'm looking forward to seeing my peeps in Bali, party like it’s 1999 and make people dance til’ the break of dawn. See you on the danceflo!

www.beatmag.com

If you can describe your sound in the form of a cooking recipe, what would it be?

don't need a turntable and/or CDJ to spin and there are so many more things to play with to up your game - sampling other tracks, syncing your tracks, effects built in, hot cues, and thats just to name a few. Also bought the S4 controller from Traktor that eliminates the need of the mixer and CDJs together and its great for recording demos and utilize everything in the software from the controller and the X1 for mobile DJing.

andra and the backbone boshe | wednesday 14 march

Roots:

Andra and The BackBone is a band that hails from Jakarta. The band is a solo project of Andra Ramadhan, who is well known as the guitarist from Dewa 19. Andra met Stevie Morley Item who also occasionally performs with Dewa19 and they instantly connected because they had similar musical views. They soon found Dedy Suryadi, a former music journalist, and asked him to join the band and Andra & the Backbone was ready to rock in 2006.

Sound:

Indonesian pop and rock.

Where you might have heard of them:

www.beatmag.com

The trio joined EMI records in 2007 and released their first eponymous album, which contained the hit single ‘Musnah’. That single has had considerable air time on Indonesian radio and television. They continued their success with the release of their second album in 2008, Season 2 which produced another hit song called ‘Main Hati’. Their third album Love, Faith & Hope which was released in 2010 and has a different concept because it consists of five new songs and five acoustic cover songs from the previous album. It contained the hit single ‘Jalanmu Bukan Jalanku’.

Why see them:

Andra & The Backbone’s sound is inspired by 90s alternative bands like the Stone Temple Pilots and Foo Fighters. If you were a child of the 90s, this is something that will definitely be of interest. Andra & The Backbone will perform at Boshe on Wednesday, March 14. They are a pretty good rock band so if you are into that, don’t miss this opportunity to see them live.

the magician woo bar | friday 16 march | 5 pm Roots:

Like any good practitioner of the supernatural arts, the Magician’s origins are cloaked in carefully guarded mystery. The Beat tried to send an investigative journalist to figure out what his roots were, and all we got back was a rabbit who repeatedly spoke the words, “don’t mess with the Magician”, before darting off into the sewers to never be seen again.

Sound:

We hired a group of wizards to decipher his Facebook page and his musical influences include: Brian Ferry, Jacno, Fox The Fox, Human League, Supertramp, Fiction Factory, Fleetwood Mac, Dennis Wilson, Quincy Jones, Propaganda, Bobby O, Giorgio Moroder, Mr Master, Q. Lazzarus, Kim Wilde, Abba, Visage

Where You Might Have Heard him:

www.beatmag.com

Word of the Magician can travel fast or not at all depending on what kind of runes the Magician uses. Some people have known him for a lifetime, yet all they can remember is dancing to his music. Is it sorcery? Or is it good music? No one knows for sure. Scientists can neither confirm nor deny whether he exists with the vast majority claiming that extraterrestrials may have given him secret alien DJ technology that the general dancer might misconstrue as magic.

Why See him:

Why not? The Magician is as mysterious as the meaning of life itself; perhaps if you went to his show, you might find enlightenment. Maybe he will ride in on a unicorn, turn Smirnoff into Grey Goose, give the blind a third eye and turn the W upside down into an M in a parallel universe where such madness is commonplace. At the very least, you’ll be treated to good music and a superb party atmosphere.

max graham dee jay club | SATURday 17 march | after midnight

Roots:

Born in London but raised in Canada, Max Graham is well known in the Canadian and International dance scenes. He was brought up in England, Spain and the US mixing it up with graffiti artists, skateboarders and eventually turntablists.

Sound:

His distinctive style covers different genres of progressive, techno, disco, and trance to name just a few. During a Graham performance, a collection of different sounds can be heard in every aspect of the tracks being played.

Where you might have heard of him:

His progressive trance classic “Airtight” (2001) was a huge worldwide hit which was nominated for a “Juno” award in Canada. His monster 80’s remix hit “Owner of a Lonely Heart” (2005) and his diverse artist album Radio (2010) along with other tracks like “Crank” and “I Know You’re Gone” got him a lot of rotation in the clubs.

This disc spinner/producer has never stuck to a single style of easily marketable music but prefers to follow his own path of discovering and creating great tracks from so many different genres. At one of his sets you’ll hear house, trance, progressive and even techno but if you let go and trust this master DJ you’ll have the night of your life.

Four Year Strong

F

our Year Strong consist of four strong guys with very Spartan beards. The band performed at Hard Rock Café as part of their Indonesian tour. The smell of the sweat which usually comes with a bunch of headbangers involved in a crazy mosh pit was evident at Hard Rock that night. Four Year Strong exuded masculinity and even had the crowd singing along to their hit ‘Just Drive’. After two hours of nonstop rock energy, they finally said goodbye to their fans but the fans weren’t having it and screamed for more. Clearly being merciful rock gods, they came back to play two more songs. The concert ended with their famous hit, ‘Wasting Time’. What a great night.

The music may have been different to what you’d expect almost 10 years ago when he was the Number 1 DJ in the world, but it was pretty damn good anyway. The concert seemed very patriotically Indonesian because it was opened by two boy scouts that brought out Indonesian flags and there were also two Balinese dancers during Setia’s performance. They all seemed to know the songs and sang along when the vocalist pointed the mic at them. And somehow, miraculously, they all knew the show was on. S.B. So what’s your Karma? (Laughter). P.O. Perie Owen, age thirty six and counting, from Sydney, Australia, currently living in Bali, will be five years to date. S.B. Your reason for leaving Sydney? P.O. To get out of there. (Laughter). S.B. Your in the hospitality business, did you go to school for that? P.O. My education was normal up to university, I left after two years realizing that wasn’t what I wanted for myself, I got a job working in a bar and decided that’s what I wanted to do, my parent’s put me on a plane, went to London and worked my way up, the rest is history. S.B. When you say worked your way up, meaning from bartending, that was to all around hospitality? P.O. Yes, I just loved the energy of the industry; it was like a night out for me, never felt like I was working. I went from bar manager to night club manager and from there gradually worked my way up to operations.

www.beatmag.com

S.B. That was in Sydney? P.O. Yes, that was for the Merivale Group, which was for four years, then straight to Bali from there, I took a role in operations at the Canggu Club and that was almost two years and then I decided it was time to have a child, my son is now 18 months old and this is my first resurrection back into the industry. I am now employed by Karma Resorts and running Karma Beach Batu Belig, which is the first of many beach clubs that we have planned.

Karma Beach

S.B .Do tell more on that one? P.O. Karma Beach has a pretty ambitious roll-out planned with around 20 new Karma Beach venues taking shape world-wide over the next two years. We are currently developing the blueprint model that will become the basis of each Karma Beach and will ensure that you receive the same experience from one to the next.

S.B. So this is the flagship, so to speak? P.O. It is, the ideas came from our existing beach club Nammos, located at Karma Kandara. S.B. Being operations manager, what are your responsibilities? P.O. I’m responsible for the day to day running of the venue, ensuring that we are delivering consistency from food and beverage through to private experiences or events. It’s my job to make sure that everything flows smoothly whether you’re having a dinner for two or at one of our beach parties with 500 people. And of course doing this all within budget and still making a profit! S.B. Would you elaborate on the party plans? P.O. We’re very musically orientated and have some big parties planned between now and the high season. The company chairman, John Spence is a massive fan of music and believes it’s a vital component of the Karma Beach experience. You can expect big name international DJs frequenting Karma Beach and of course our beach parties will be massive! Good food, good wine and good music….Karma Beach really is the whole package! S.B. Will there be live music as well on the agenda? P.O. Possibly. We have a brilliant Director of Music & Artist Relations, Ms. Jane Slingo who is responsible for bringing in our amazing talent and artist line up for all our events across the Karma group while ensuring they meet the Karma music philosophy. S.B. What obstacles have you had to date since the opening? P.O. The weather. We opened the last day of December, before New Years Eve, the weather was fine and we were jammed packed from day one, the days following were a challenge, putting it mildly, (Laughter), definitely one of the worst rainy seasons since I’ve been here, particularly with the wind. We’re very exposed here, being right on the beach. S.B. I presume a lot of money was lost flying in those DJs? P.O. Well yeah, we did our best to try and regroup, we had to cancel our parties three times. We even planned to move the DJs into the kitchen, but the rain actually came horizontally into the kitchen as well, so the idea didn’t come together but we did try our hardest. We’re still here and steadfast. (Laughter). S.B. Are there plans to make sure that doesn’t happen again?

P.O. Obviously we’ve had to modify the structure a little bit. It’s all a learning curve and there has been lessons here that we will take with us for our future Karma Beach venues. S.B. The last opening party was fifty, fifty, rain then clear, how did that go? P.O. Fantastic night, unfortunately we had to cancel Giles Peterson at Karma Beach – we ended up moving him to Karma Kandara to play a set instead as the weather there was tolerable. He was our headliner on our Opening Night Party which we eventually had to cancel. Then he had to fly back to London. He had some sort of interview to do there. We did have Fashion TV filming on the weekend and various journalists flying in from Australia and Jakarta, the editor of Vogue from Australia was here, like that. S.B. No expenses to be spared? P.O. No not really, Karma is all about creating the experience. Sometimes you’ve just gotta go for it despite what mother nature hands to you. S.B. How did you come into this position, being out of the loop for a while? P.O. I love being a mom, but it got to a point where it was time to get back into things before I started getting rusty, myself, the opportunity came up via a friend, did the interview and here I am. Being with one of the best companies in Australia didn’t hurt none, (Laughter). S.B. If someone comes to you with ideas, have you an open mind for that as well? P.O. Any avenue will be explored, again it’s all about the food, the music and the parties. We don’t want to fit into a certain mold, some molds are meant to be broken, but a successful operation like this doesn’t always have to follow a trend, it needs to get loose once in a while. S.B. Do you see any big changes coming to Bali? P.O. Yes, bigger places like Potato Head etcetera, we’re back to old Bali, almost completely bamboo, and right on the beach and most of the comments I’ve heard thus far, not only from tourists, but from expats who live here, is that we bring back a sense of old school Bali. S.B. What is your philosophy? P.O. Don’t look forward too much, and never look behind, oh and life’s a beach... S.B. To your fans out there? P.O. Do I have any? (Laughter) S.M. Been real, thanks Perie. Chow mein, Salvador Bali

John Digweed is nothing less than a legend in dance music terms. He played his tracks at Mint a couple of weeks ago and david trauts decided to throw some questions his way and this is what came back.

You started DJing at the age of 15. How did you first get interested in electronic music? I always loved music from a very early age so DJing was just a way that I could share my love of music with other people. You and Sasha were famous for introducing the progressive house genre to dance music in the late 90s. What exactly made it progressive? Was it the beats per minute or something else? Are you still playing Progressive now? It came about as music that was always progressing, moving forward, bands like Leftfield and labels like Guerilla were at the fore front of the scene, the progressive sound that’s around now is utter shite. So, no. I am not playing it. During the early 2000s you were one of the biggest names in the dance music scene. You were popularly voted the best DJ in the world in DJ Mag in 2001. How was that period? Did you see it coming or did it catch you by surprise? It was loads of hard work, you don’t get to number 1 in any field without putting lots of hard work into it. I was touring loads, the Bedrock club night was massive and there were great productions out there. Where do you get your influences for producing your music? Are they different influences now than 10 or 20 years ago? Of course times change and music changes. I would not be where I am now if I was still playing the same music from 10 years ago. You’ve had the Bedrock label with Nick Muir for over 12 years. What do you mostly get out of that? The recording of other people’s music and their success or recording your own stuff? Both really. Making something in the studio and seeing the reaction on the dance floor. You can’t beat it, likewise getting sent a demo and hearing it for the first time and knowing it’s a monster club track and signing it is always a great feeling also. What were some of the high points of your career so far? Each year seems to get better and better I am enjoying playing out more now than ever before, the music that is around at the moment is fantastic.

Many people say a good DJ is one that can read the crowd and can play what they need to make it a big night. Do you still do that, read the crowd, or just do your own thing? A bit of both, there is no point playing music you like but no one else in the room does. I am known for up front music but I always try to find the future big club tracks before anyone else has heard them. Is the process in making a set to play at a gig or a radio show different? The radio show I am filling time and with a live show I need to fill the dance floor. How many hours of music do you listen to in a week? Pretty much from the moment I get up to late at night. I love it, it’s my passion, so it’s fun. By the looks of your Wikipedia page and website bios I’ve checked recently there was a phase from about 2006 till now where you’ve been laying pretty low. Is that true? I don’t check Wikipedia, all my info is on my website and one thing for sure I don’t think I have ever laid low. You’ve come back recently with a Hollywood movie soundtrack, a Spiderman series soundtrack, toured with David Bowie and packed in 250,000 people on Brighton beach with Fatboy Slim. They say your Transitions radio show is listened to by approximately 14 million people worldwide. So what’s next? What gets you up in the morning nowadays? I am living the dream. Getting to bed is the hard bit as there is not enough hours in the day to get everything done. What did you think of the Mint Bali show? It’s a great little club with a nice vibe and a important place for good quality electronic music for people In Bali. I hope to come back soon. And how did the Stadium Jakarta gig go? Did they like what they heard? Yep, great club and I loved the crowd.

ARIEF ‘AYIP’ BUDIMAN

Homegrown & Well Known:

f e a t u r e

084

interview by Rudolf Dethu

Arief ‘Ayip’ Budiman is a key figure of graphic design and marketing communication in Indonesia. Ayip started marking his territory since 1991 via Matamera in Bali, he embraced many cultural areas: publishing his “I See Indonesia” book in 2008, initiating Bali Creative Community, being a judge for many prestigious international and national graphic design and communication competitions (British Council’s International Young Creative Entrepreneur, to name one), co-founding Bali Creative Festival in 2010 and 2011, being the Chairman of Indonesian Graphic Designers Association 2010-2012, and a whole lot more.

1. You are the first guy in Bali who started a graphic design company. You are the pioneer. Is that urban legend or a fact? When and how did it start? It all began because I fell in love with Bali. Then I decided to make Bali my new home and built Matamera in 1991 with a few crazy buddies. It truly wasn’t easy in the beginning, but I was kind of ready to face any logical consequences that came up as long as I could stay in Bali. Our first project was an

exhibition event of WAKA in Legian 1991. It was quite a challenge to open up the horizons of our clients about designs at that time. Oh well, we had to start somewhere, right? 2. It must’ve been tough doing graphic design back in those primitive days. Any interesting experience you’d like to share? Those days, we worked with transfer lettering first, then it evolved to PC 286 DX later on. I don’t want

4. Some old school graphic designers cynically said that every kid now can be a graphic designer as long as you know how to use Photoshop program and all that. Any comment? True that. Now everyone is a designer. In many occasions I always tell junior designers to change the mind set of being designers. It’s how to enlarge responsibility in the profession. Designers are not just doing layouts, choosing colors and fonts or beautifying things. The real process of design always starts with study plus research, then put it in a design mentality. This process is in the fundamental phase, its the reason we are designing. Beyond technical skill and taste, designers also should understand basic business and good communication and the ability to value their profession. 5. It seems like you expanded in not only doing graphic design, but wider more complex works. Is this evolution or a way to generate more income? For me, this is not expanding; it’s just a matter of choice. After 20 years in this industry we now move to creative communications services, meaning visual design has become a small component. We are now doing more to help our partners strengthen their strategy in business by activating communications to all their stakeholders. The form can be in brand development or marketing communications. Our team now is not only made up of designers but also researchers, authors and writers, cultural observers, NGOs, architects, interior designers and many others, depending on what is the subject in their projects. 6. What do you think about the graphic design/ communication phenomenon in Bali, is it as good

7. What’s the biggest acknowledgement you have received so far? Hmm… Never really been concerned about how much people like me. But responsibility wise, I feel honored to be chosen as the chairman for the Indonesian Graphic Designers Association.

085

f e a t u r e

3. The technology today is getting even more sophisticated. Is this a good thing or bad? For me, all software, flashy Mac computers, they are all just tools to make transforming our ideas into designs, it saves us lots of time in building designs. But technology is not everything. The most important thing in doing design is the understanding between content and context. What designers should be aware of more is how to combine technology and creativity. Creativity comes first. Technology comes second, to support creativity. Creativity can survive, more or less, without technology. While technology won’t mean much without creativity.

as other places in Indonesia? As the international melting pot, isn’t it supposed to make Bali have more of a chance to go global? Indeed, Bali is a gateway, we have much more of a chance compared to other places in Indonesia to go global. But going there is not easy. A lot of us failed in mapping the potential and opportunity. After 20 years observing, I see there are lots of possibilities to create value, collaborations and co-creations.

8. This is personal, I bet you listen to music a lot too while working. Name three of your all-time favorite albums and why. I can’t mention just three. For me music and visual art are like a couple. When I like the album, I usually respect the artwork as well. I enjoy listening to the Liquid Tension Experiment (a musical project by Dream Theatre’s ex-drummer, Mike Portnoy), Bitches

Brew by Miles Davis, Foxtrot by Genesis, Three Men Acoustical Jam by Tesla, ...Tot Licht! by Discus. 9. Three of your all-time favorite movies and why. Giant Leap by Jamie Catto and Duncan Bridgeman. Mindblowing universality. The Godfather series by Francis Ford Coppola. Learning about passion and brotherhood. Pulp Fiction by Quentin Tarantino. Rich dialogues and unique vocabulary. 10. Any last words to the industry players out there? I have none, thanks. As The Who puts it: the kids are alright. You, me, them, us, let the passion do the talking.

to sound arrogant, doing design is actually easy, at least I think I know what I’m doing—and I like what I’m doing. The hardest part is handling clients and the business. The clients usually want something very personal and tend to direct, I should say dictate, what colour, fonts, even size they prefer. They tend to forget that the design is for their clients, for the market, not for themselves.

Bali With

LOL. You can forget the sarongs and the board shorts, the little black dress and the surf shoes, if you forgot to bring the single most important thing of all – you may as well stay home. By Sarah Dee

www.beatmag.com

T

he one thing that is essential for surviving Bali, whether you’re here for a week or a few years, is your sense of humour. Don’t leave home without it. The most glaring example of what can happen when you lose your cool is the Schapelle Corby saga, she definitely did not pack hers and all the screaming and tearing out of hair tends to upset the Indonesians a lot. The reverse is true of the Australian model caught at a party with something she shouldn’t have been – she never said a word, donned a Muslim head dress and smiled her way to freedom. All sorted, no one upset. Last year an Australian journalist joined the fray for the Ubud Readers and Writer’s Festival and clearly lost her sense of humour on the way, if she ever had one. The story she published ranting about the traffic and the pollution and how a man offered her transport on a motorbike, something only a prostitute would accept back home, brought on a backlash of unprecedented proportions. Clearly no one told her that humour would get you through almost every situation on this sunny island. Just look carefully the next time an Indonesian makes a mistake, say knocking into you with their motorbike. Immediately comes the smile, a little wave and a giggle. Tell your pembantu that she just turned your favourite white shirt pink, and she will laugh. It may drive you mad but screaming and yelling will only result in the exact opposite of what you had hoped to achieve. Your shirt will still be pink and your staff may not turn up the following day. Doing your nut like Gordon Ramsay is simply not the Indonesian way. No matter how frustrated

you might become with a situation, smiling, having a joke and then keeping your mouth shut is the way things are done around here. Bargaining is something that Westerners often find it hard to get their heads around. However, the Indonesians love it and they expect you to play, and a play it is. Make a few jokes about being fat, they love that, how you’re so poor, how you love the colour of their hair and mind you only want to pay a quarter of the asking price and game on. Some people seem to have it and others don’t. Obviously we all have good days and bad but a smile is always the solution. Take a walk on the beach and try this exercise, look everyone in the eye and smile – this will work almost anywhere; people smile back. People who get mad at being approached incessantly with bibs and bobs and wooden penises need to take a reality check. Look them in the eye, smile and say no thank you. You may have to say it a couple of times but it is the most effective way to deal with the situation. If you lose it and tell them to push on, chances are they will follow you, offended and telling you to go home. Now no one needs this on holiday and the peddlers aren’t going anywhere, so have a little joke with them, say thanks and move on. Everybody is happy. The Balinese in particular are great pranksters and they love a joke, so instead of getting hot headed, smile and have a little bercanda aja with them. You’ll love it, they’ll laugh and everybody will be happy. Bali is an easy place to enjoy, just go with the flow and flash those pearlies, they say if you smile long enough it actually lifts your mood.

As is usually the case though, things in Bali don’t stay static for long, and now the golden sands between Seminyak and Brawa are awash with a new wave of beach clubs, both glitzy, cosy and everything else in between. Newest on the beach block is the eye-catching Karma Beach, just paces from the ocean and tastefully decked out in what fashion mags would probably call bamboo boho style, with lots of wood, comfy oversize beach cushions and private bales to while away a lazy afternoon.

a truly dribble-inducing selection of salami, proscuitto, mozzarella and saganaki with warm marinated olives, hummus, grilled eggplant and capsicum, fresh fennel and Spanish onions with a selection of fresh lightly toasted breads to mop it all up with. Still reeling from the nibbly goodness of the sharing plate we crack on to another couple of cocktails (Karma smack, 100k++) before diving into the mains. With seafood featuring highly across the board on the well-crafted menu, we order up a prawn linguine (210k++) and the salt encrusted snapper (180k++). The fish is literally encased in a shell of rock salt, which requires cracking open before delving in (hint, don’t eat the salt) to the super tender, fall-apart white meat.

ali newbies would be well forgiven for pulling a U-turn somewhere around Petitenget and heading back to Oberoi, thinking that they had reached the end of the Seminyak party and dining scene. Not that long ago, they would have been right to as well, as once sleepy Batu Belig beach had little to offer aside from a few trinket stalls and the odd enterprising ice cream vendor who’d wandered a little further north than usual.

For seafood lovers there is actually a full selection of fruits de mer from the seafood bar, which boasts oysters, calamari, prawns on ice and lobster as well as a host of other offerings, both chilled and grilled.

The overall ambience is pure casual, but with a Med inspired bill of fare from master Aussie chef Brad Harrison and a cocktail list to die for, it’s clear that there are no rough edges around this little gem.

Rounding things off we go for the gluttonous Eton mess with fresh fruit and vanilla ice cream (65k++) and a Bailey’s parfait with espresso Anglaise (60k++) – neither of which touch the sides.

For the enviable task of road testing a few indulgences from the aforementioned food and beverage lists, I bring along my go-to chum, who is always up for a bit of nosh in the name of research, and we quickly get settled with a signature Bloody Mary and a Karma Mule (both 100k++) to get the ball rolling.

Karma Beach BatuBelig is open for breakfast, lunch, dinner, grazing, snacking, lazing and partying from 8am ‘til 1am on weekdays and 5am on weekends, with international club nights once a month and an on site spa bale offering all the delights of Karma’s spa treatments for those who are looking for the utmost in luxury beach days.

Starter wise, we get stuck right in to the fantastic Mediterranean plate (90k++), which boasts Dan Ashcroft

Love Doesn’t Come Easily, No?

By: @JohanJT

It’s all about the love and love can still be in the air this month as long as you have some good romantic movies in cinemas or on your DVD player. L

et’s face it, music is there to move us – emotionally and spiritually, but oftentimes it’s more about moving to a specific time and place. Perhaps not physically, but I still can’t listen to Barong music without feeling that I’m smoking a kretek in some kampung. With that in mind then, I could think of far worse places to be metaphorically transported to than the sun kissed emporium of chill that is Ku De Ta on our own little slice of beach heaven on Seminyak sands. Compiled by annual resident knob twiddler Jim Breese and Ku De Ta’s musical director BTK, Volume 1 is, by it’s very name, the first in line of a series of upcoming compilations that aim to mix up the Ku vibes and slap them down on disk for our aural digestion. It’s mission accomplished on that front then, with the pleasing mash up of Balearic, bossa, dreamy, jazzy, chillout and modern disco notes slipping down like a spoonful of honey right from the word go. According to BTK himself, “The soundtrack of KDT is as important as the venue itself, and this new series strives to bring another level of audio excellence to our loyal following worldwide. We’ve carefully handpicked every track in this compilation to create a seamless blend of music that captures the essence of KU DE TA,” he told the beat recently. Seamless it is as well, as each track slips almost unnoticed into the next, subtly fading each genre in and out. Tracks such as the dreamy ‘Seaside’ by Max Melvin and ‘Speck of Gold’ by Afterlife standout as the epitome of cocktail chill, while Trio Mocoto’s ‘Noa Adianta’ and ‘Calling My Mermaid’ by Mystic Diversions bring the Latino angle. Holding a villa party or just need to wind down? Wherever in the world you might be, wedge this in your CD player and let the smooth sounds of Ku De Ta’s newest sonic offering wash over you.

The Commercial Juicer This is the restaurant juicer that extracts up to 84 oz. of fresh fruit juice per minute. Whole oranges, grapefruit, or pomegranates are placed inside the chute and the internal rotating flywheels press the fruit onto a stainless steel micro serrated blade that bisects the fruit. Spinning reamers squeeze the exposed pulp, extracting its juice through a filter that removes the bitter pith and pulp before the liquid is channeled into an awaiting glass. The squeezed fruit is sent to chambers on either side of the juicer that remove for ease of disposal. The entire juicing process is visible through the transparent housing and the unit juices up to 28 oranges per minute. All of the parts are made from food grade plastic or metal to withstand decades of commercial use and the blade, reamers, and drums remove for easy washing. www.hammacher.com/ $9,900

ur own Beat contributor Salvador Bali is a man of many talents, one of which is painting. His work will be exhibited at JP’s Warung and is opening on Friday March 9 form 6-9pm. The exhibition, entitled Ronnie Black and White, will feature a slew of Salvador’s fine works. Ronnie started painting on the island all the way back in 1990, it was a different island then with few people and even fewer art galleries. His first exhibition was at the Strand Bar in Seminyak (all

you old school Bali people know it) which some say served as the first art gallery in the area. Without any formal art training, Ronnie’s art has graced the walls of many an art house and his paintings usually stem from whatever his imagination has in store for the canvas. Ronnie paints themes that cover the island of the gods and the larger world beyond. The sheer diversity of his work makes it nearly impossible to categorize the genre of art he produces. In his own words he says: “For sure if you do anything long enough, you become good at it, check it out, you won’t be disappointed…”

ou can tell fairly early on with a spa if it will be a good experience or not. Small details like the smell, the tone of the staff and the care taken with the environment are all tell tale signs.

Spa

Salila Spa Ramada Resort Camakila, Jl Pura Bagus Taruna, Legian, Tel: (0361) 752877.

Massages are a little the same, from the start you can tell if you’re going to like it. Salila SPA at Ramada resort Camakila, which fronts the beach in Legian, had me at hello.

I thought this is OK. The paste had cooled a little by the time the other side was ready for application but this is the price you pay for smooth skin.

The staff were nice, everything from the massage oils to the scrubs were laid out in a thoughtful way, a sense of calm pervades, the music was playing at the right volume and they didn’t take forever telling me what and how, just right.

The beauty of the boreh scrub, as opposed to lulur, is that it warms on the body. I asked the therapist to turn off the air conditioning for this bit and lay there comfortably for ten minutes as the spicy rub did its work.

The massage room was spacious, clean and smelled good. There was enough natural light coming in and they had set the temperature a little cool but as the day was blistering it was a welcome relief. Best of all the sheets were crisp and fresh.

The final part of the treatment is a flower bath and normally I find it a little boring. Today I succumbed.

The masseuse didn’t waste time either and she knew what she was doing. Confidant and measured, it wasn’t long before I drifted into a state of relaxation, nothing to distract from the smooth strong strokes. Today I was enjoying a one-hour massage followed by a signature coconut boreh scrub. Sleepy and warm from the massage the therapist applies a warm, spicy paste– relieved that it is warm as I have had it served freezing cold,

First a hot shower with good pressure washed away the dead skin and the debris of the scrub and then a beautifully scented petal bath and a delicious ginger tea. Good to go. The Ramada’s spa, Salila, hit all the right notes and I would recommend it. It may cost a little more than the local salon but still reasonable and the benefits are well worth it. For the cleanliness, the quality of the massage, the soothing scrub and the lovely spa room and clean open bathroom, Salila gets an honest tick for service, friendliness and for doing a lot of things right.

How Safe are the Roads Where You’re From You may think road safety’s a real problem here but the problem exists elsewhere, too

W

e probably all reacted with a shudder at the news of two recent, deadly road accidents in Indonesia: the horrific case in Jakarta of nine people mowed down like ninepins close to Gambir Station, and the bus that fell into a ravine near Sumedang, West Java, killing 10.

In the second, the speeding bus reportedly collided with the rear of a truck in front, lost control and fell into the ravine. The constricted nature of the terrain then made rescue difficult. In both cases, willful negligence by the driver concerned allegedly seems to have been the major cause of the fateful accidents that occurred. Before you permit yourself the smug thought that such things just couldn’t happen back home in your country if you’re from overseas, remember this: Road safety comes at a price and all governments concerned decide (either consciously or by default) what is an “acceptable” accident rate on roads under their control. In richer countries, road safety standards tend to be higher, partly due to the adoption of more sophisticated traffic engineering techniques, but it is still true that much depends on safety awareness of the general public. It’s also the case that richer countries would have been able to afford to invest in comprehensive road safety education campaigns decades ago, while the reverse is truer in developing countries. That may be why anti drink-driving campaigns, coupled with appropriate legislation, which could have been used in the Gambir case, do not appear to exist here yet.

Equally, the appalling level of inconsiderate behaviour by road users here can sometimes be jaw-dropping: Look at how many motorcyclists and car drivers execute right turns or overtake, for example. Recently, the tendency for motorcyclists to ride along pavements at peak times and for car drivers to park in a road lane in South Jakarta reserved for bicycles have both been causing much annoyance. While many younger motorcyclists now routinely wear crash helmets because they appreciate that it’s safer to do so (rather than simply to avoid being stopped by the police), look at how many bike-borne families travel about: Mum and dad are wearing helmets but the two kids sandwiched in between are not. Should an accident occur, it’s most likely that the children will be snatched clear of mum’s grasp due to their momentum, with nothing to protect their head as they fall to the ground... Admittedly, the family-on-a-bike thing is a product of economic necessity but the lack of safety awareness for the kids is a matter of education. Many of the hazards that exist on the roads could be avoided if road users simply behaved with more consideration for others. The Jekylland-Hyde transformation that many undergo once they get behind the steering wheel of a car explains a lot of what happens on the roads today. Ultimately, though, no amount of road safety education or traffic engineering can eliminate the damage a willfully negligent driver can wreak. (Jim Read)

www.beatmag.com

In the first example, the driver was allegedly intoxicated with alcohol and drugs when she took the wheel of a car without a driver’s licence. The accident occurred on a straight stretch of road so it’s alleged there was a lapse of concentration, the vehicle mounted the curb and the inevitable carnage ensued.

It’s not very often you come across individuals who can actually say that they are living their dream. Years have gone by and countless times she has walked up on stage and made people dance to rhythms and beats of Jamaican music, yet Danar Pramesti finds herself dealing with her nervousness but says when the music begins she becomes someone else. Danar, who is one of the lead singers of Souljah is an enthusiast who finds joy in life’s little adventures and says music is not only meant for fun but it is a tool that empowers and makes the world a better place. She finds poetry in every twist and every turn on this ojek-esque adventure we call life.

Danar tell us about Souljah, reggae music and how it has come to be.

www.beatmag.com

Before we were Souljah we called ourselves Arigatoo and then later on we called ourselves Souljah. There were no changes in the members only a slight change in image. Now often times the mistake people make is labeling us a reggae band when really what we play is Jamaican music. It’s a mixture of ska, dub, dancehall, rocksteady and so on. It’s difficult to find the soul to do straight up roots music like Bob Marley did so we stick to our own vibes and are grateful that our music has won people’s hearts. What is it about Jamaican music that makes people want to dance and move? I think the thing about Jamaican music is that it is very easy to listen to and in this world we

find ourselves in the hard situations a lot. So, at the end of the day the easy music moves us, we relate. What is it like to get up on stage and engage in this love of music with the fans? (Laughs) you wouldn’t believe it, but I am still nervous when I’m in front of a crowd and god knows I have done this too many times before, but looking out to a large number of people kinda staring at you or me in this case makes me nervous. I hate the spotlight to be honest. However, it is comforting to know that there are seven other people behind me to cover up if I make a mistake in talking to the crowd. I become someone else when I sing and have no problem expressing myself through Souljah’s music. It’s only the talking part that I’m not too sure of. Singing, has it always been your dreams?

So you jumped straight into music right after college? Actually no. I worked in an advertising firm for a little while and one day friends convinced me that music was really the thing I should be doing. It’s one of those things where you take your chances, you let go of the norm, the financial comforts and the mundane. Souljah struggled at first, but after doing our little self promotion tours on our own budget, we’ve come along from that, but the lessons learnt from the experience along the way has made me and made us who we are today. What else can you tell us about yourself? I am simple as it comes, I love my ojek rides around town, I love my souljah family, I’m a traveler and a soul adventurer at heart. I sing to forget, forget whatever it may be. I have recently found a needed calm and escape in stencil art and I guess from one creative process

to another, music and the arts is what keeps me going. What can we expect from Souljah next? Coming up on the February 25 we have the Sabtu Dansa event, an event focused on Jamaican music. This is a venture of offbeat music, which I believe will be epic and I encourage everyone to come. Also, we are working on the concepts and everything else that goes into making our fourth album (fingers crossed) and also another project that is very near and dear to the heart of everyone in Souljah is the project we are initiating with Braddasouljahs (our fans) in terms of supporting fan members who, through unfortunate circumstances have had to drop out of school or kids who deserve much better by funding and providing them an opportunity to run a ‘Warung Braddasouljah’ where they will be able to run an operate a small scale business to enhance their entrepreneurial skills and be able to gain business sense and confidence in that. We want to instill value and purpose into their lives through little initiatives like these because truly these fans mean a lot to us. So at the moment, these are the things we are looking to do but follow @souljahmusik on Twitter to get the latest :)

Believe it or not I know at this stage of my life that I am living my dream. When I was younger I remember vividly writing in my little diary that when I grew up I wanted to be a singer in band and lo and behold it’s where I am right now. I love it.

In Space with Gold Puma

S

Keren!

Let’s forget for a while about the many international DJs that perform in Jakarta and give our support to the local talents of high calibre. Illigals held an event called “In Space that presented the dynamic duo, Gold Puma. There were also a few other local DJs who performed that night, from DJ Heru and Dade who opened the show and were supported by MC D and LJ Ovie. After midnight, the Gold Puma duo, formed by DJ Micko and Dmust Akira, played electronic music on the decks. Micko has performed in many clubs and Dmust who was nominated many times for best producer looked solid playing their set. Cool!

www.beatmag.com

B

For dance music lovers all over the world, and especially in Indonesia, John Digweed could be referred to as a household name. The legend who has visited Jakarta a few times already was back to perform at Stadium for the first time. Fans have been waiting quite a while to see Digweed play in a super club like Stadium. Digweed started his set slowly and the Stadium underground atmosphere, along with some cool visuals and laser lights supporting the show, made it spectacular. When morning came, the place was getting more packed. Digweed’s three hour set really impressed his fans and most kept the party going till late or early... depending on your perspective.

agi pecinta dance music seluruh dunia khususnya Indonesia, tentunya sangat mengenal John Digweed.
