The local nightlife is stumbling again with another broadside hit during last week from authorities ruling that all bars and clubs have to be closed by 3am in Kuta and Seminyak. As if the low season wasn’t enough to push some businesses over the brink. It’s still difficult to say what the ramifications are from this ruling, which we’re told is geared to combat noise pollution and criminality on the streets late at night, which we’re sure has the full blessing from the local community, but in all reality will have a dubious effect. While noise from clubs and bars that aren’t already sound proofed may be cut one hour earlier, the streets will still be the scene of any number of crimes till late until the streets are policed in a proper manner. Some club owners have already said that they are willing to help the local authorities to finance the policing of the streets in Kuta, but as yet, nobody knows what will happen next. One probability, though, is that punters will have to get out a little earlier than normal to make the most of a night out, which isn’t a bad thing for anyone, and maybe is the saving grace of this whole story. Read more on this subject in a report inside filed by David Trauts. There are heaps of deals going on in the bars and restaurants all over town; two for ones, discounts, special additions for the same price, all you can eats, ladies nights, just about anything seems to be available at a cut price. Make sure you check the regular events pages of the What’s On section inside for all the details. The big events are on the Mainstage Pages if you didn’t realize by now. More from our dear VIP Card members.

I live since 6 years in Bali and know The Beat mag very well and think it’s very good. I like the updates and to see what I have missed. What I dislike about the mag? Hmmm, I haven’t been used as cover model (yet) ;) … Warm regards, Mark V Thanks Mark, keep up the good work and maybe you will make it on the cover, better than winding up on the TBD hehehe Frankly - I cannot live without the Beat Mag! Too often have I picked up one too late, and found out about the performers that have come to Bali - in fact just yesterday I read that the Orb played on the beach just down the road from where I lived - and I had not even heard that they were going to be playing! AND I LOVE THE ORB! DRAT! Also, being a musician myself hopefully we can get an article written for us once the album is ready (A space odyssey with a Bali twist). One dislike would have to be that there is no map for Canggu - the area is really developing fast with a ton of great spots now. This would be handy to readers I think. Justin Boyd… Good point Justin, we’re working on it now and in regard to your next CD production, send it over, we love helping out where we can.

Nyepi Silence 020

s c o o p

Nyepi is one of the best days of the year to be in Bali. The build-up the week before with all the ceremonies leading up to the main day of silence is a special time indeed. The night before Nyepi everything around town shuts down during the afternoon and evening as people find their way home or a spot to see the Ogoh Ogoh parades on most streets and principal intersections. Be early and watch the show pass before your eyes. From 6am the next morning till 6am the day after just relax, take it easy and enjoy the peace. We will see you again in the Balinese New Year!

Stuck in the Middle Placed smack in the middle of the Sanur, Kuta, and Nusa Dua threeway, Benoa Square seems like the perfect compromise when wanting to meet up with people from “out of town”. Once fully operational, Benoa Square will feature a Coffee Bean, Burger King, Domino Pizza, Hero Supermarket, Periplus, Ngok Kopitiam, GTeras Pre Dine & Entertainment, and a Cupsoul art gallery so if you can’t agree on what to eat, you can take that compromise one step further because there’s clearly something for everyone. The place will also feature special events and concerts.

Aussies Top Arrival Figures Again in January Australia once again topped the list for most arrivals into Bali last month, January 2012, while China sees the greatest percentage increase. “There were 63,704 Aussies arriving in Bali during January, which was an increase of 8.40 percent over the same month the previous year,” said the head of the Bali Central Statistics Agency, I Gede Suarsa in Denpasar on Friday. According to Suarsa, most of the Australians came through Ngurah Rai airport with direct flights from their country, while only 999 arrived through the sea ports on cruise ships or yachts. The strong Aussie dollar and close proximity are key factors for the Australian visitor to our shores and with those conditions Australia was able to contribute 25.15 percent of the total 253 286 foreign tourists visiting Bali in January. There was an increase of 21.14 percent over the same month in 2011, which recorded 209,093 people one year ago. From the top ten countries supplying most of the tourists to Bali during the month of January, eight countries increased their numbers encouragingly, and only two countries showed a decrease. The other two top movers on the increase, and mainly due to Chinese New Year this year being in January, were China with a whopping 222.18 per cent from 17,102 to 55,099, and Taiwanese by 20.11 percent from 9717 people to 11 671 people. Malaysia, South Korea, Singapore, The United States, and British numbers were also up. “The two countries that decreased their travel to Bali in January were Japan from 16,747 people to just 12,805 and Russia from 11,499 to 10,907 people,” said Gede Suarsa. (From the TBD)

Scott Thompson set off to run from Bali to Jakarta, raising money for social and health education for Indonesian children last week. He started from Ngurah Rai Airport on Thursday morning at 7am, and will finish in Jakarta on 1 April 2012. Scott will traverse 30 cities in five provinces with a distance of 1250 kilometers. His fundraising has already received a positive response from the public, and has already collected donations amounting to Rp 3.3 billion. That support came from sponsors and donors, including the Ministry of Youth and Sports. Scott, a former professional rugby player, will be running for nearly a month. Scott has been living in Indonesia for nine years and before setting off acknowledged that this feat will be very challenging. “It’s hard, but I’ll try,” Scott said at a news conference at Bali Mandira Hotel, Jl Padma, Legian, Kuta before setting off. He said that he was doing this from his own initiative. “I want to help the children of Indonesia,” he said. The money raised will go to two groups; Mary’s Cancer Kiddies, which provides cancer treatment for children, and the Cinta Anak Bangsa Foundation (YCAB), which provides children with educational assistance. According to the BPS, the number of poor in Indonesia is high at around 30.02 million people. The five provinces that Scott will pass there is a total of 15.6 million poor people with the highest percentage of residents in Central Java (15.67%), East Java (14.23%), West Java (10.65%), Bali (4.20%) and Jakarta (3.75%). Previously, Scott ran 250 kilometers in the Sahara desert, Africa, raising funds for the Nation Children’s Foundation of Love (YCAB) and Mary’s Cancer Kiddies (MCK). Hu’u at Dragonfly for Nyepi It’s that time of year again when Nyepi takes over the island of Bali and Hu’u Bar makes an exodus to the Big Durian to keep the fire lit on the Bali party scene. The party starts on March 24 in Jakarta’s Dragonfly. This fine publication and our sister magazine, FRV Travel, will be participating in this cross cultural exchange of sorts with UK DJ Glynn Tandy set to hit the Dragonfly decks. Aston Rasuna are involved, so if you need some accommodation, be sure to check them out.

In environmental news, the Indonesian government is expected to register Bali’s unique Mola-mola or ‘Sunfish’ population in the list of protected marine animals.According to director of the Coral Triangle Centre (CTC) Marten Welly, studies show that the waters around Nusa Penida are unique in their ability to support large numbers of this otherwise rare marine animal. Sunfish come to the surface of the ocean between July and September every year, and tourists and divers come from all over the world to witness these majestic creatures. However, according to a spokesperson for the Bali Tourism Office, the government will also regulate tourism to Nusa Penida to make sure that too many visitors do not adversely affect the Sunfish habitat.Protection must also be done to maintain the cleanliness of the marine environment,” added Welly at a conference in Denpasar yesterday. Floorcraft SOS SUPPERCLUB | sat & SUN 17 & 18 march 5pm

Roots

Coming from the Bay Area in Northern California, Floorcraft has been tearing up San Francisco’s dance floors for the past 16 years and is showing no signs of slowing down. He is currently with Cable Recordings.

Sound

House, progressive, tech house, electro.

Where you might have heard of him

He hosted his own personal float during San Francisco’s 2008 LoveFest where he not only promoted his music but also raised awareness for organ donations. Nice guy. He’s a member of the DJ duo called Panic who are currently generating buzz with some new tracks. He’s also well known in the Bay area for his Freeform vs. Dubalicious parties that he started eight years ago.

www.beatmag.com

Why see him

If you like the San Francisco sound, this DJ will be spinning at SOS which will most likely combine a beautiful Bali sunset and some great music. Those two reasons should be enough for any punter to want to experience Bali and its vibrant nightlife.

Danny Cray cocoon | Sunday 25 march

Roots:

Coming from the far distant land of Oldenburg, Germany, Danny Cray has had 10 years of DJing experience under his belt before making it onto our shores here in Bali. In his native land, he used to be a drummer who was in various TV productions.

Sound:

Progressive, tech, deep, electro and classic house along with “@$$ shakin’ house club music”.

Where You Might Have Heard him:

He’s extensively played at Cocoon for their bigger events including when Louie Vega, Harry Choo Choo Romero and Stacey Pullen played. Cray has also played at the Blue Marlin’s Monday party in Gili Trawangan, which is apparently a very famous event for the Gilis. He also played in the Kontor’s House of House event in support of Tom Novy and Markus Gardeweg.

Why See him:

www.beatmag.com

If you like the type of music listed above (and I know you do), you should definitely check out Danny Cray. Its sure to be a Cray-zee time in the sun around the beautiful Cocoon swimming pool for another rather large Splash!

Marcell Siahaan HARD ROCK CAFE | wednesday 28 march

Roots:

Marcell Siahaan, sometimes known as simply ‘Marcell’, is one of Indonesia’s leading solo vocal artists. His love of music started from an early age when his grandfather introduced him to the music of Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, etc. His other family members were instrumental in influencing his musical tastes and introduced him to music like the The Doors to Luther Vandross. He used to be a drummer in a relatively famous underground band called Puppen but left the band to pursue his career as a singer. In 2002 he got his first break into the world of quasi fame when he made a hit single with pop star Shanty entitled ‘Hanya Memuji’.

Sound:

Pop, soul

Where You Might Have Heard him:

www.beatmag.com

He released his first eponymous album in 2003, and it became a hit with singles like “Semusim”, “Firasat”, “Jangan Pernah Berubah” and “Waktu Kan Menjawab”. In 2006, Marcell released his second album called Denganmu. This album is more soulful compared to his first album. In 2008, his third album, Hidup, was released which had the hits ‘Candu Asmara’, ‘Berhenti Berharap’ and ‘Pantaskah’. In 2011 Marcell made a pop grunge group called “Konspirasi”. Marcell also acts in movies and has had many TV appearances. His also won a bunch of national entertainment awards.

Why See him:

With a long list of works in his resume, Marcell is definitely worth a gander. Despite his busy schedule, he’s still able to make the time come to our island and perform here. So for those of you that like his music, get ready to see him live at Hard Rock Café on March 28.

Jump Smokers sky garden | friday 30 march

Roots:

An American group, by way of Chicago. Nicknamed “Kings of the Dancefloor”, which happens to also be the name of their debut album on Ultra Records. The group consists of 4 members, Roman, DJ Flipside, Reydon, and Johnny Digital.

Sound: Hip hop, electronic, rap, electro

Where You Might Have Heard Them:

Somewhere on the radio, in collaborations with some of the biggest names in today’s pop music scene, such as Pitbull, Akon, Baby Bash, Nick Cannon, and Jermaine Dupri. They’ve remixed the likes of Jessie J, Enrique Iglesias, Taio Cruz, Jay Sean, and many more huge names in the industry. Their song with Alyssa Reid “Alone Again” shows their true range of talent from floor shaking electro, to feel-good pop. They also scored some internet buzz with their anti Chris Brown track, “My Flow So Tight”.

www.beatmag.com

Why See them:

Jump Smokers are a name that’s going to be buzzing around the ears of pop for a while, and it appears they’re just taking flight. One might find it regretful not to catch them while doing their thing here, all the way on the other side of the world. In the current age of music, where acts like David Guetta and the crossover genres of pop and dance have taken center stage, this is an group with their feet firmly planted in such a movement. See for yourself if they really are kings of the dancefloor...

FABIO XB KLAPA | SATURday 31 march

Roots:

Hailing from Italy, he began a career in DJing all the way back in 1995. It wasn’t long after that he held residencies at some of the top Italian nightclubs. Fast forward to 2001, and that’s where his international career began to take off, due in part to the smash hit “Amnesia”, which saw airplay all over the world. Fast forward even further to 2009, in which he’s signed to the illustrious Armada label, solidifying him as a top producer.

Sound:

Trance, Progressive House.

Where You Might Have Heard him:

www.beatmag.com

We’ve personally heard him blasting through the speakers of various clubs around Indonesia, via the massive anthem “Close To The Stars” featuring the vocals of Yves De Lacroix. If you’re into trance or progressive, chances are you’ve heard his music in some way or another. Whether it be out supporting your local DJ, or listening to the world’s best. Fabio XB has a serious list of original productions and remixes to his name, and he’s well respected amongst some very talented company within the trance world. Signed to Armada, one of the top labels in all of dance music, his music is gracefully laced with high energy and beautiful melody. You can check out his radio show “Electronic Dimension” on Afterhours FM.

Why See him:

Why not see him is the better question to ask. He may not have the massive name or draw like that of Tiesto, PVD, or Armin… but this artist is woven deep within the fabric of the global dance music scene, and his music is played regularly by the aforementioned superstar DJs. This is someone who has played all over the world and he’s only getting bigger, and better. Come out and show him that Indonesia has a solid place in the global dance music scene as well.

ainy weather caused the event to start a little late and people definitely took their time to get there. But after Gorilla Bling grabbed the decks, people arrived, the skies parted and the rain ceased... at least for a little bit. It also happened to be Mary Magdelena’s very own Jean Marc’s birthday. It was festive night where uncooperative weather just wasn’t enough to keep people from partying.

he first day of weekend is usually the time when people want to head to and get loose at Boshe, and this one was no exception. The venue was full of a mainly local punters but there were also a few foreign looking folk in the mix. They were all there to see two amazing female percussionists, The Angels. The Angels played their drums with a mix of digital music from DJ Think and the result was awesome and definitely made the crowd move to the groove. Besides the music, there was also a fashion show modeled by some very fashionable young ladies.

eavy rain and huge wind made the outdoor stage kinda expendable and the event was forced to move downstairs to the woobar. People squeezed into the venue but that didn’t stop them from having fun, maybe even gave them an excuse to have more. They enjoyed the canapÊs, sipped drinks and danced to Hedkandi tunes. DJ Andy Daniels and Dean Oram entertained the crowd with their music and there were also a few glamorous dancers that shook the crowed into a frenzy. ravelling is said to broaden the mind and adventurers like to dive into the local scene, but more often than not, you will find people gravitating towards those of the same nationality and seeking out experiences that remind them of home. There’s a little place in Jl Nakula called, perhaps for cultural reasons (?), Extrablatt. What they lack in atmosphere they make up in a huge selection of sausages with unpronounceable names and assorted German and Austrian specialties on the menu, and the place is populated by larger than life Germans who love beer and yes, sausages. The most recent arrival on the scene is a taste of the UK called The Plumber’s Arms. On the road to Canggu, next to Moka in Br Anyar, The Plumber’s Arms served up their first Sunday roast last weekend and you could cut your beef with the English accents. Mind you, a few Aussies showed up too but the English laid it on thick. With cold draught beer to wash down the specials like Shepherd’s Pie and fish and chips with curry sauce (hmmm), this place hit the spot from day one. You’ll find Japanese people in the Japanese restaurants and loads of Belgians in Mannekepis, which has now been bought by a Finn so we’ll see what happens there. The Australians are everywhere but often travel in packs – see

The more polished uptown types can be found talking real estate and fashion over coffee in The Corner Store and juggling their Apple devices at Zuchini Café down the road The French are famously colloquial and it won’t take long to spot them in Moka Cafes across the island. Recently closed but frequently busy was a small, out of the way Norwegian restaurant, Momor’s – who even knew there was more to their cuisine than slippery fish? – and the place was a magnet for yes, Norwegians. If you ever needed a Norwegian question answered, you could head there and be sure to find an expert. Ubud seems to have more than its fair share of Americans, play spot the Yank at Kafe where everyone has an open device and there’s not much room for conversation. The food is good though.

different – from Sulawesi to Flores and Java, ethnic groups often hang together as well. Add to this, groups made up of the various social strata – from those that happily hang off the edge of tiny carts on rickety stools to the well heeled businessmen – and strangely many in uniform who seem to flock to Sushi Tei – proving this trend will sometimes defy logic. In Sanur, Café Batujimbar is a favourite with well off Ibu Ibu (Ladies) and fashionabl e Indonesian women. Similarly you will find large groups and families tucking into a grand nasi campur at Made’s Warung where the prices are decidedly western but they can well afford it. In Bali, more than most places, you can easily find a home away from home, no matter where you’re from, and a place where you can strike up a conversation with someone who speaks your language.

You’re sure to be met with a rowdy parakallo at Pantarai in the main street where the Greeks go for a damn good moussaka, and now there is even a Turkish restaurant called Tulip on Petitenget with all things.... well, Turkish, and the Lebanese are parked down at the old Glory, renamed Layali on Jalan Legian.

Lovely Russian couple Denis and Maria have opened a coffee shop called Drop, next to Biku, and if you fancy a little Slavic conversation with your coffee, this is the place to find it. You’ll find plenty of gorgeous women with very long legs as well which tends to attract a wider following. There’s a large table at Zanzibar reserved during lunch where speaking Italian is pretty much required. Naturally the Italian owner and the chef ensure that all the home-style favourites make it to the table, one suspects with a little extra attention. Considering Bali’s far reaching expatriate society, it isn’t surprising that almost all nationalities are represented in some social and culinary form, and groups of Indonesians are no

Sport, it seems, is the great leveller and while the Indonesians love their sport, especially soccer, as much as anyone, it is the national teams that bring out the true colours of every nation. Grand Final season for the Australians sees the strine laid on thick at hangouts like the Sports Bar in Legian and the strangely compelling Captain Cook where the well priced and Bali’s coldest beer is a big attraction every afternoon, and some mornings too. The World Cup, however is the greatest national celebration and even those that don’t care much for football in the general sense, begin to get very patriotic during this competition when flags are flying and passions run high. Perhaps its human nature to seek out the familiar and in Bali you are sure to find someone who is speaking your language, whatever that might be. - Sarah -

Back to the Future

www.beatmag.com

I’m

sitting on a plane cruising towards Australia to witness firsthand what the Future Music Festival in Brisbane will be like. I had heard a few things about it after doing some very rudimentary research, but I honestly had no idea of what I was getting myself into, which is coincidentally exactly the way I like it.

The press conference was helmed by Malaysian government officials and the organizers of the music festival. Future Music is coming to Malaysia in a very big way and will most likely be the biggest dance festival to hit the Southeast Asian region, which is no small feat. They’re expecting 40,000 people to attend the event which will be held at their formula 1 race track.

I knew that: a) it was a dance music festival, b) it was going to be big, and c) famous people I had only been able to enjoy in music videos and recorded digital audio were going to perform live for my viewing pleasure. You really don’t need to know much else.

The Brisbane show looked like it was going to be nothing short of epic, the headliners included gargantuan names on the dance scene including the Swedish House Mafia, Tiny Tempeh, Fatboy Slim, Aphex Twin, New Order, Skrillex, the Wombats, Paul Van Dyk, Gym Class Heroes, Die Antwoord, Azari & III, the Stafford Brothers, the list goes on and on and on.

Shortly after my arrival in Brisbane, the PR company that had flown me over for the purpose of promoting the festival’s last leg in Kuala Lumpur held a press conference and I was able to get a bigger picture of what was really going on. When you get a random email for a free trip to see a music festival including hotel and airfare, you can’t help but assume that it might be an elaborate scheme by an illegal kidney harvesting front. The press conference dispelled those fears.

On the way to the show, clouds were seen ominously overhead and rain was feared throughout the drive. You could see throngs of young people walking, like a pilgrimage to some sort of promised land. First you’d see one or two but as we got closer, larger groups formed, all walking in the same direction as we were driving. Then the rain came. That didn’t stop anybody. They marched on, determined to

Arriving at the horse race track used for the venue, you could see the giant stages organized by the stands and in the middle of the oval course. Two huge stages protruded into the sky and rivaled the race track’s seating area in size, seemingly competing for the sky. The roar of the crowd within was tremendous and translated into a low roar from a distance. You couldn’t help the adrenaline coursing into your veins. It sounded like this was going to be huge and a slight bit of apprehension fused with eagerness washed over me in an awesome wave. Right as I walked in, clouds parted, the sky was clear and I jump right into it. The first show I marched to was to see Skrillex, which was way on the other side of the venue that they had fenced off for the festival. You could see throngs of people, more people than you could possibly guestimate, walking in all directions. The organizers clearly had a good idea of how to set up the layout of the venue, with two wide bridges over the tracks between the two main stages. In between the two sides were various smaller stages that included massive indoor tents and a foam party the size of most mega clubs. This was some sort of dance eden, it seemed like whatever you were into, you could find some place in this festival to get moving no matter what your tastes were.

indie rock of the Wombats, it did indeed seem like just about anything you could stomp your feet to was represented. I’m not going to bore you readers with how much fun I had; enjoying great music is a personal thing, one that should be enjoyed at a giant festival, where the crowd’s energy seems to permeate through the air, at least once in a lifetime. Preferably many times. If you’re in the Southeast Asian region, the Future show in Malaysia is about as good a deal as it gets. It’s more than economical to hop on an Air Asia ticket to Kuala Lumpur for the show. And with a line-up that includes Chemical Brothers, Tinie Tempah, Chase & Status, The Wombats, Pendulum, Grandmaster Flash, Sneaky Sound System, Cosmic Gate, Alex Metric, Azari & III, and The Stafford Brothers along with a plethora of local and regional up and comers, this is the definitive Southeast Asian dance experience and possibly the one to go to in all of Asia. The organizers are just so legit, from the experience at the Brisbane show; they pretty much provided everything as advertised. Plus the Malaysia show is right next to the airport which means there are zero noise restrictions. That translates into a booming amount of sound being pumped out from the world’s premiere acts in dance music. So head out there today, seriously. Like, book your ticket now. The show is on March 17! couple of Tuesday nights ago, bars and clubs in Kuta were shut down without warning at 2am by a local community group that said they were fed up with the noise pollution and criminality in the area. Literally thousands of punters were turfed out onto the street and sent home. On one side that’s fair enough, I don’t think anybody could bear the pounding beats of club music next door every night of the week, either. However on the other side, the nightlife in Kuta and Seminyak is an important element of tourism on this island and it has been there a long time. Like it or not, the nightlife brings a lot of people to town. Sure, they come for the temples, the surf, the happy smiles and everything else the island offers, but at night they are all eating, drinking and entertaining themselves in one of the most vibrant nightlife areas of the planet. I’m sure nobody wants to see that change too much. People are often surprised at how late things kick off at night around town when they first get here. Most venues don’t start filling with people until 11.30pm and the main act wouldn’t get rolling till at least 12.30pm. One can presume that concept came from the influence of European visitors to these shores over the past 30 or so years bringing with them the habit of late dining and later partying. But the sun doesn’t set here at 10pm in summer, so it doesn’t make so much sense to start partying so late, except the fact that most tourists here don’t have to work in the morning and don’t have a care in the world. Lucky them. But for the rest of the population, who do have to get up early, a late mid-week night can put a proverbial spanner in the works for the following days.

So there is the possibility of good and bad coming from this decision made official by the Badung regent and the Tourism Department last week in a letter sent to all venues in the Badung region of Bali that stated that all discotheques in Badung have to close at 3am. Bear in mind that that was a better outcome than the previously slated 2am mid-week and 3am weekend close, while now all music being blasted out onto the street will be turned down at two, and the bar and dance floors inside can remain open till 3am. We asked some of the bars affected by the new ruling what they thought the future holds in Kuta, in particular, with the restricted closing hours. Sky Garden told us that it is having a negative effect on business and tourism. “You can imagine having 2000 people asked to leave at 2.50am. They aren’t happy campers,” the manager told the beat. And you would have to wonder what all these people do when they are put out on the street half cut at that hour. “It’s mayhem, it’s actually making the quiet areas worse,” adds the boss down at Sky. Meanwhile at Bounty, the manager there told the beat that he now feels like he’s living in Bandung, not Badung. And over at Eikon, they say it’s slowly killing their business. “We don’t have any neighbours around our place, it’s all shops, so who is it hurting?” one of the owners at Eikon told the beat, and they can’t see any change in habit from the punters. “They aren’t coming out any earlier yet,” he added. We presume at this point that the venues will have to start their shows a bit earlier than before and if possible the punters will have to get moving a little earlier too. With the recent blocking of empty taxis going into the downtown area, which has dramatically improved the state of the traffic flow on Jalan Legian, times may well be changing for the better in the Kuta nightlife hub, but it’s clearly too early to tell if this early closing rule will be of benefit to anyone. The music’s still pounding till 3am, the neighbours still can’t get to sleep and the punters are out drinking beers on the street from the local convenience stores till all hours anyway. It will be interesting to see what transpires over the next few weeks.

very detail-oriented perfectionist, he keeps a low profile and frequnetly does high profile jobs, Ridwan Rudianto began his career in video/filmmaking right after he completed his studies in Toronto, Canada. While still under the radar, he participated in a series of brilliant projects. One of the highlight was when he directed a controversial work for Superman Is Dead’s first ever videoclip, “Punk Hari Ini”. Big names like Goenawan Mohamad and Jay Subiyakto are people he has teamed up with. For once, Ridwan deserves a better, brighter spotlight.

homegrown and well known:

Ridwan Rudianto

Interview by Rudolf Dethu

www.beatmag.com

How did you get involved in the video/movie industry? As soon as I came back to Indonesia after finishing my video editing course in Toronto, I instantly started getting busy in the industry. Your videoclip, “Punk Hari Ini”, was quite historic back then. It shocked the old-fashioned Indonesian people due to its badass image of the band in the video, while at the same time, the youngsters really loved it and thought it was very cool. Anything you want to share? It was in 2003. That video was actually my very first (video clip!). Quite historic for my career, indeed. It was more like a communal

project. Lots of people involved. Much creative help from friends. Also ideas from Superman Is Dead themselves. All good. All fun. That was also when SID had just signed up with the major label, Sony Music Indonesia, which brought both good and bad. The video ended up getting huge attention on a national scale. Some “chauvinists” even complained about how SID used too many westerners as extras. Oh, also, during the making of the video the label was pretty worried seeing all the decadence. I was constantly reminded to later censor as many beers, cigarettes, and middle fingers as I could, which were plenty. Hehe. But, surprisingly, some people really liked the video. They like the feeling of the celebration

in which all the communities—from skaters to surfers, bikers to BMX boys, rock scenesters 082to tattoo enthusiasts—got together, having fun together, they felt represented there. The people who liked it seemed to understand that this country needs to chill out from all the boring conservatism… What’s another video clip that you made that you think is worth mentioning here? Not easy to answer this kind of question. For me, each video clip has its personal relationship, has its own value. It sounds a bit cliche but it’s definitely true. How do you see the future of video/filmmaking in Bali? With today’s digital facilities, faster internet access, all these amazing technologies, things should be much easier. The future should be brighter. The door has opened much wider. However, the support from the government is still very much needed. Especially to provide better infrastructure and a proper system so things can go smoother. And cheaper.

www.beatmag.com

It seems like nothing much is happening in video/ film making in Bali. What’s really going on? Brutal fact: it’s because the headquarters for audio visual stuff is in Jakarta, still. Since day one. The filmmakers just did the shooting here in Bali—movies, videoclips, TV programs, ads, etc— and then go back to Jakarta or their countries for the next process. This phenomenon, Bali as the movie making destination, should’ve been grabbed by the local government as the perfect moment for technology and knowledge transfer between the outsiders and the locals. The government could create, say, certain systems or rules so the outsiders are forced to use local workers. Not only as daily workers, laborer kind of jobs, but a decent program like workshops or something. By enforcing this, there will be full-on knowledge transfers to the locals. Plus the locals can get better exposure. The chance for the locals to compete, nationally and internationally, will automatically become way bigger. Does Bali have talented video/movie makers? Who are they and how far have they reached? Tintin Wulia - her video arts have traveled all over the world and got great acknowledgement by video critics. Soma Helmi - her movie was chosen as part of the wide screen movie produced by Ridley Scott titled “Life In a Day”. You can google both of their creations. Very impressive.

What’s your latest activities in regard to video/film making? Early this year I made a short documentary movie, “Berdiri Lagi Menolak Mati”, in order to support the book “Blantika | Linimasa”. What’s the biggest acknowledgment you have received so far? Being a part of visual team for “Matah Ati”, the colossal Javanese dance epic by Atilah Soeryadjaya and Jay Subiyakto, also the “Karna” monologue by Goenawan Mohamad. Now, let’s get personal, name three of your all-time favourite records and why Stereolab, Aluminum Tunes. Stereolab always amazed me by presenting much new sounds in each of their album. Portishead, Third. Each tune goes slowly and patiently and ended up calm and graceful. Low, Secret Name. As its name says, Low gives low tones, slow tempos, some call it “slowcore”, to bring out this pacific, quiet atmosphere. Three of your all-time favourite movies. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, directed by Ang Lee. I was born and bred watching martial arts movies. Here Ang Lee successfully transformed the old school martial art movie style into modern era. Days of Heaven, by Terrence Malick. A movie with minimum dialogue, but, it’s like you got deeply stabbed and the wound lasted so long. Adaptation, by Spike Jonze. “The scripts I’m starting,” said Charlie Kaufman (the main character in the movie), “It’s about flowers. Nobody’s ever done a movie about flowers before.” A movie which talks about the movie itself. Very clever. Any nagging last words? This “indie filmmaker” term, I’m not sure why people are so proud of it. I just think one day, if you take your work seriously, we all want to make movies with appropriate budget so we can be backed up by professional team and, hopefully, releasing epic movies. It’s never wrong and also cool to be Peter Jackson or Woody Allen. It’s alright to get investors, sponsors, and being commercial. As long as you can make good movies. As long as between you and the investor it’s a win-win solution. Just don’t get to fixated with who’s indie and who’s not. Grab a chair, get a pen, write a script, and make good movies. Indie or not, who cares.

Since 2007, Anwar has been working towards his high school diploma in Australia and training with some of the best coaches in surfing as part of Rip Curl’s International Grommet Development Program.

He followed it up with a starring role in Rip Curl’s landmark Seven Ghosts river surfing expedition. “In 2012 I want to finish high school and make it into the top five of the Australian Pro Junior series so I can compete at the World Juniors,” Anwar said. Many believe Anwar has the potential to become the first surfer from Indonesia to qualify for the Association of Surfing Professionals elite World Tour. The Black Keys el camino

Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder

If Ohio duo Dan Auerbach (guitars) and Patrick Carney (drums) have taught us anything about rummaging though the golden age of the American music hamper, it’s that unwavering consistency and an earnest appreciation for straight up raw rock n soul goes a long way. As far as ten years and seven critically acclaimed studio albums in fact, beginning with Rubber Factory back in 2004 and currently blasting out of the nearest Midwest saloon bar jukebox in the form of El Camino. Judging by the outpouring of critical and public acclaim that has been flung their way, it would seem that The Black Keys really haven’t put a foot wrong, and it only takes a cursory listen through the 11 tracks of El Camino to see that they’ve pretty much nailed it again with a tight, fast-paced collection of upbeat little gems. Clocking in at just under 40 minutes, the album rattles by with a minimum of fuss, and feels as well polished as your mum’s best silver – thanks in no small part to super producer Danger Mouse at the helm. Opening track Lonely Boy wastes no time in getting right to the heart of the matter, with a sucker punch hook and instantly singable chorus line that is guaranteed to awaken your inner air guitarist. Foot-stomping Northern soul inspired Dead and Gone paves the way for album standout Gold on the Ceiling, complete with spangly Wurlitzer and retro hand claps. From here on out the formula remains steadfast with further standouts Run Right Back and Sister ensuring even the most ADD afflicted listeners won’t be tempted to skip forward. Only on a very few rare occasions does it seem as if the concentration has lapsed momentarily (see acoustic intro to Little Black Submarines) but it’s never long before the next catchy chorus or blistering riff kicks in and it’s all on again. Simply put, The Black Keys work with a minimum of fuss and a wealth of ideas to produce the richest, fattest, coolest music around, and El Camino is a shining example of this. Get it now – ‘nuff said. Dan Ashcroft

Japanese Wrist-Mounted Finger Piano This Japanese Wrist-Mounted Finger Piano is totally fun. Slip it on your wrist and slip your fingers into the little finger thingies and you are ready to rock. But now you are wondering how you will rock? Each finger thingie plays a note when you press it on a hard surface. Add three more buttons/notes on top of the wrist unit, and your Japanese Wrist-Mounted Finger Piano pumps out one full octave of fun. But that’s not all. It’s the sound banks that really make this special. Sure you can play piano (sound 1) or bells (sound 2), but what sets the Japanese Wrist-Mounted Finger Piano apart from all other instruments (and makes it wonderfully Japanese) is sound 3: cat. That’s right, you can play a full scale (and chords, thanks to the polyphonic nature of t h i s instrument) of cat. The Only Omelet And Waffle Maker.

This is the electric waffle iron that cooks a Belgian waffle and an omelet simultaneously. The device has two separate forms (one for eggs and another for waffle batter) that heat to different temperatures and rotate 180º, producing crisp, evenly browned waffles and tender, airy omelets. The unit cooks 6 1/2”-diameter x 1”-thick Belgian waffles with 1”-deep pockets that hold syrup, whipped cream, or fruit compote, while the 1”-high omelets are large enough to hold veggies, ham, and cheese. When it’s time to rotate the iron or the waffles and omelets are cooked to one of the six separate browning levels, the unit beeps and illuminates LEDs. The non-stick forms can be cleaned easily with a damp cloth. www.hammacher.com/ $139.95

Now – March 18 Kendra Gallery Another beautiful exhibition by Sonny Irawan, Mellow Yellow depicts the real meaning of color for any artist. This yellow themed group of paintings brings observers to a groundless zone. His images are seethrough, presenting gaps, or zones that gape like open windows. Soni does not primarily paint individual figures, but rather their moods, allusions or allegorical circumstances. He says that his works generally depict the discomfort of life around him—in a mellow manner and style. Kendra Gallery, Jl. Drupadi Seminyak, Bali.

Now – March 18 Warung Yaya Vony Dewi aka Uching was born and bred by a mother involved in makeup, hair and clothing industries. She developed a skill for using beauty equipment that she received through past generations and thru patience and diligence pours her sensitive femininity onto sheets of paper and canvas. She chooses the term of graffiti herself to represent her hand-touched style and the coloring process. Come and see the works that could inspire you at Warung Yaya, Jl. Sekar wangi No. 4, Sanur, Bali.

Now – April 2 Ganesha Gallery A fascination for graffiti and commitment to turning dull gray things in life into something more alive and vibrant has brought German born Olli Fraenkel into different parts of the world. The magic and allure of Indonesia was enough to make him stay and further enhance his adventure with art. Come and be a part of this exciting Asieone exhibition by the Bali based ‘Seniman’ at the Ganesha Gallery Four Seasons Resorts Jimbaran Bali. Tel: (0361) 701010

Through March Deus Mantra Ardana grew up in Lombok and was struck by polio at a very young age forcing him to rely on a wheelchair to get around which has played a major part in his artistic development. The exhibition focuses on the nature versus nurture aspect of how the human mind works exploring what is acquired and what is natural. The title, “Organic Mind” focuses on the more raw and instinctual in the human mind. Deus Temple of Enthusiasm. Jalan Batu Mejan No.8, Canggu, Tel: 217 10 76 id.deuscustoms.com

Now-Mid April JP’s Warung Our own Salvador Bali has an exhibition at JP’s entitled “Black and White”. Without formal art training, Ronnie’s art has graced the walls of many an art house and his paintings usually stem from whatever his imagination has in store for the canvas. Ronnie paints themes that cover the island of the gods and the larger world beyond. The sheer diversity of his work makes it nearly impossible to categorize the genre of art he produces. Jl. o how do bugs copulate with one another? Well, David Lowenthal‘s exhibition at Gaya Art Space called “Insexts (Do they also do it?”) explores how the tiniest of critters “do it”. The exhibition focuses on Bali’s most minute organism in their most intimate of moments. Sophie

P

aris born Sophie Parienti is a serial doodler. As far as her memory goes, she’s been addicted to doodling, so much so that no surface was safe from the tip of her pen. She went on to study Art History at the University of Bordeux in France and rounded off her studies with a degree in PR and communication from the University of California in Los Angeles. She never did lose her desire for doodling and has continued to use her stationary to create, which soothes her soul.

www.beatmag.com

Moving to Bali has inspired the doodle monster within and she now incorporates cultural and natural elements into her pieces. She tries to keep the subject matter open and, using Chinese ink on paper, she digs deep within the recesses of her mind and comes up with very mature patterns for a medium associated with boredom in the classroom. Her latest exhibition is titled “Send in the Clowns” and will be displayed at the newly revamped Word of Mouth throughout March. 9 Jl. Kunti, Kunti Arcade Shop No. 10. Seminyak. Semara Spa is a spacious palace of pampering, that has some unique attributes

Look

Semara Spa is built to grand proportions with a seductive entrance graced with high ceilings and soothing colours. Gauzy full length curtains separate the manicure and pedicure chairs from the private spa rooms in the rear. A sense of peace and purity is enhanced by the soaring ceilings and large rooms decorated in cool earth tones with gleaming marble floors.

Feel

The private spa rooms are each equipped with their own luxurious en suite bathrooms. As the treatment begins the curtains are drawn. The Semara signature massage features long strokes designed to soothe tired muscles. The therapist is always in contact with the guest and senses any discomfort. Combine with a scrub that precedes the massage, rather than following it. Coffee, lulur or sea salt is gently rubbed into the body and then sponged off. A shower follows and then a deep, long massage with a choice of fragrant essential oil-

based products. Alternatively a spa session that combines massage and a wonderfully penetrating facial seduces with nourishing, natural products and skillful hands.

Ingredients

Organic, wholesome products that nourish the skin and evoke the senses define the treatments here. The range of products includes a signature range, a local organic range and the luxurious range of products created by supermodel Miranda Kerr, Koros, which are available exclusively at Semara.

Magic

Semara feels like a high-end spa yet offers affordable luxury, keeping the prices attractive enough to attract day guests. The play date and pampering package offers parents a fantastic opportunity to place children in the biggest kiddie club in Bali while enjoying some time out with a wonderfully intoxicating treatment. Ayurvedic treatments and Thai massage are also on the menu here, offering a great choice of accomplished luxurious treatments.

espite the seemingly unbearable heat, the air was filled with a cool and crisp vibe. Yes, the crowd had gathered, dancing shoes, suspenders, shirts, fedoras and wavin the Red, Green and Yellow flag, the buzz and excitement was unbelievable. This was after all, the event to be In, if you were a fan of good old Jamaican music. Sabtu Dansa was finally in session and over six thousand people showed up to brighten and lighten, dance and prance the night away. The showmanship and skill of these musicians were brilliantly complemented by the singing and dancing of the crowd, who religiously sang their hearts out to tunes of old and new. It really felt like the humming bass line and the noise behind the brass section along with the repetitive reggae strumming and the one drop of the drums put a magical spell on the rooftops of Bekasi.

The Likes of The Skatalites, Toots & the Maytals, the specials – Legends of this genre - would have been proud. Every performance was playful and memorable and it was filled to the brim with positive vibrations. From the instrumental tunes of sentimental sounds, to the jumpy sounds of es coret, from the groovy tunes of Tipe-X and the soulful sounds of Souljah, Sabtu Dansa was everything we expected and More. BOOM!

What music are you into at the moment? Top Ten Songs for The Secret Agents at the moment: “Never My Love” by The Shangri-Las, “Merry Barrack” by Deerhoof, “Pros Kangaroo” by The Cambodian Space Project, “Red Blood Sea” by Sigmun, “Angin Laut” by Koes Ploes, “The Man Has Come” by Backwood Sun, “L’Anamour” by Serge Gainsbourg, “This Wasted Heart” by Tenderfist, “Alexander” by Jirapah, and “Heart Painted Black” by The Experience Brothers. Favourite albums at the moment: Superbad Soundtrack vol. 38: The Return of Setan Tete (compiled by Gooodit) and Superbad Soundtrack vol. 34: Super Suranta I (compiled by David Tarigan)

www.beatmag.com

Favourite bands: Surfer Blood, Shimmering Stars, Dengue Fever, Pixies. What was the first record you bought—any interesting story behind it? Keke Tumbuan (KT): No interesting story behind my very late first whole-album-by-one-band purchase, which was Suede’s Suede. I just finally found The One sexy enough to be my first. Before that, compilation tapes from friends saved my early teenage years.

Indra Ameng (IA): I’m not so sure about this, but I remember one time my uncle brought me to a music shop when I was eight. I bought two cassettes. The first one was folklore story for children Cinde Laras by Sanggar Cerita, with the voice of the famous Hanna Pertiwi and Maria Oentoe, and the other one was a comedy recording by a famous comedian group, Jayakarta Group. What are your all-time favorite albums? Why? KT: Crazy difficult question. The ones I can think of right now are... Sci-Fi Lullabies by Suede. Actually love all first three albums of Suede but this one just sweeps me off my feet. Revolver by The Beatles. Love the cover. Love the tracks. Love George Harrison’s “Taxman” and Lennon’s “Tomorrow Never Knows”. The Velvet Underground & Nico by The Velvet Underground (and Nico). Infatuation at first hear. Combat Rock by The Clash. Why? Even Allen Ginsberg is in it. Transformer by Lou Reed, a cool album. Mojo Chess Classics by various artists. A compilation CD by my fave music mag, Mojo. This one celebrates Chess Records, with names

What book are you reading now and what’s the score (1-10)? Borrow or buy? KT: Senja di Jakarta by Mochtar Lubis. Score: 10. Go buy it. Many of the so-called Indonesian “authors” around today should read this masterpiece before they publish their ‘postblogging-period’ books.

0133 133

f e a t u r e

Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate? KT: Sofia Coppola. Making good works and hanging out with great folks in film and music. IA: Serge Gainsbourg (Indonesian version) hehehe...

IA: Senja di Jakarta by Mochtar Lubis, score: 10. When you want to spend your hard-earned cash, purchase this book. It was first published in English titled Twilight in Jakarta in 1963, this book shows many kinds of characters that lived in Jakarta, from the lowest class to the upper class. The story is still relevant to the reality of Jakarta today. It has made me understand why this city and our nation is still a mess today. Mochtar Lubis is definitely one of the best Indonesian authors, especially if compared with the authors we have today. What new movie should people see? Why? KT: People will always see new films. What they should see is an oldie by Peter Jackson called Bad Taste.

IA: The Velvet Underground & Nico by The Velvet Underground Semua Bisa Bilang by Margie Segers & Jack Lesmana Combo Mo’ Plen 1000: Easy Turbo Sound In A Trippy Deluxe by various artists Oslan Husein by Oslan Husein Bonnie & Clyde by Serge Gainsbourg et Brigitte Bardot What was the worst record you ever purchased? KT: No purchasing of bad music yet. IA: Michael Jackson’s Bad. Cause it’s bad. It’s bad. You know it.

What song or album do you choose to start your weekend? KT: Milo Goes To College by Descendents. IA: “Wave of Blood” by Southern Beach Terror. And song or album you choose to end your weekend? KT: Hastily Cobbled Together For a Fast Buck by Monty Python. IA: “Candy” by Iggy Pop & Kate Pierson.

Keke Tumbuan and Indra Ameng a.k.a. The Secret Agents just got back from a winter wonderland working trip, France and Holland, and are now back behind the decks working on their legendary monthly live music event at Jaya Pub, Superbad. They are also in the process of finishing a video clip, editing a photo book, and prepping up a photo magazine.

like Bo Diddley, Howlin’ Wolf, Rotary Connection, Fontella Bass, and one of the best of Chuck Berry’s songs, “Night Beat”. Bandempo by Bandempo. One of my top 5 Indonesian bands and a conceptually perfect album.

IA: Postcard from The Zoo, directed by Edwin, a young promising director from the new generation of Indonesian cinema. This movie has entered the international competition in Berlinale 2012 (Berlin International Film Festival), and became the first Indonesian movie that was ever selected in the main competition at this highly respectable film festival. Another movie is Somewhere directed by Sofia Coppola. In Somewhere, Sofia’s directing style can transform the feeling of everyday life’s boredom into beautiful pictures. Fantastic!
