Once again the coming of Nyepi, the day of silence and the Balinese New Year, which was celebrated or practiced last week, has heralded the return of blue skies to Bali. Locals say that Nyepi is the time historically that the trade winds return to this part of the world and the heavy rains stop for another year. Let’s hope it stays that way for a while and we can soak in the rays for some time to come. The new 3am bar and club curfew appears to be finding traction around town. Bars and clubs around Kuta especially are closing right on time every night. It’s not very clear if sound proofed venues or venues without neighbours are also included in the curfew but we couldn’t see why they would be. We wouldn’t be surprised if someone isn’t looking at that measure down in Kuta or around Dhyana Pura as we speak. Well, maybe their neighbours are dreaming of it in any case. This weekend kicks off in style with the Bali Spirit Festival supplying a bunch of cool musicians of varying genres in Ubud. The festival is the ideal place to get your yoga and world music head on and they do it in grand style. Also this Saturday we have master DJ Fabio XB playing up at Klapa’s third anniversary, Karma Beach has an arm load of international DJs at their beachside venue and Sky has the return of Aussie DJ, Kid Kenobi. Meanwhile, on Sunday afternoon you could do worse than head down to the Woobar’s 1st anniversary with DJ Karisma and Spen. Next weekend watch out for Mandel Turner at hu’u and if the idea of rockin’ it with the gals turns you on, a trip to Boshe to check out the Iron Maidens should be on your agenda. Matt Caseli also makes a welcome return to Woo on Friday. Next weekend it’s the Easter long weekend so there will be loads on and loads of people in town. With the new Balinese year also comes the chance for new beginnings. Let’s hope for greater things for everyone in this brand new year. We wish you all the best and hope you all have a wonderful two weeks on the island of Bali and an even more wonderful year to come.

Open Mic Night at the 101 Legian
Superman is Dead Make it to the Next Round There are a lot of things to do on Good Friday, one of them is the open mic night at the 101 Legian where anyone can take the stage and be a star. Anyone is welcome at the Rooftop to swoon the crowd with a great performance on Friday April 6. So if you have an awesome set of vocal chords, check out the 101 Legian. Jalan Raya Legian No. 117, Kuta. www.the101bali.com
Local legends Superman is Dead has won the the Bali round of Hard Rock Café’s Hard Rock Rising-a global battle of the bands. Now all they have to do is compete against 85 other bands that won in their respective regions. If SID destroys the competition, they’ll get to be part of the line up for the 2012 Hard Rock Calling music festival in London’s Hyde Park. You have to vote online to get them there and voting opens on April 9 on the Hard Rock’s Facebook page. Get on your browser and go to www.facebook.com/hardrockbali to vote.

Grandmaster Flash is coming to Town The most legendary DJ in all of hip hop will be gracing our presence on this island. Audibots is bringing in Grandmaster Flash to Poco Loco on Friday April 27. The man revolutionized DJing and is credited with innovating a number of techniques used by DJs today. He gained his fame as Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five which represented hip hop in its embryonic state and was the first hip hop act to be inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The first day of April is “Wear Your Bintang Singlet” day in Bali and people across the island are encouraged to wear their singlets to represent solidarity with beer drinkers worldwide. The event, which is a grassroots program originating somewhere in Poppies 2, isn’t only about wearing the singlets but about henna tattoos and plaid hair. When you see someone wearing anything touristy, you’re suppose to honk at them as well! Don’t ask us why, we think it’s foolish, but hey! Its tradition and don’t ask questions.
Bali Toll Road Ready for Construction After a lengthy review and survey phase, construction of the new Benoa toll road is almost underway by contractor PT Jasa Marga, who hope that the new toll will be able to overcome the current bottleneck at Simpang Siur and chronic traffic congestion in South Bali upon its completion in 2013. The 12-kilometer toll road will be built on 18,000 concrete pillars, and is estimated to cost Rp 2.49 trillion (US$273.9 million). “This will be the most beautiful toll road in Indonesia and will be a new icon for Bali,” stated Akhmad Tito Karim, director of PT Jasa Marga, during the project’s groundbreaking ceremony at Benoa harbour. Connecting Benoa harbour, Ngurah Rai International Airport and the Nusa Dua tourism enclave, the massive project has received over Rp. 100 billion in government funding, and is being built under a public-private partnership involving seven state-owned enterprises. However, it seems there is still some controversy surrounding the construction phase, and how it will impact upon Jl. Pratama in Tanjung Benoa. As construction begins, trucks transporting heavy equipment are causing heavy traffic jams on Tanjung Benoa’s main thoroughfare. ‘’The road is narrow, plus there are many parked cars - traffic jams happen,’’ stated DPRD spokesman Ketut Tama Tenaya, adding that he was surprised about how few hotels in the area do not have adequate off-road parking spaces. In order to address this issue and try to avoid traffic congestion along Jl. Pratama, “we have conducted consultations with parties concerned, hopefully it is followed up,’’ stated Tenaya. As well as the toll road project, a new sewage line will be constructed to improve raw waste disposal from the growing number of hotels in the area.
According to Wahli Bali, stopping the use of 2.35 million vehicles during the day of Nyepi in Bali, significantly reduced the production of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere. Deputy Officer of Walhi Bali, Suriadi Darmoko claimed last Saturday that Nyepi was able to reduce approximately 30 thousand tons of carbon. Darmoko said the figure was based on data on the number of vehicles from the Bali Provincial Transportation Department in 2010. With the 2.35 million two-wheel or four-wheel vehicles not on the road, there was not only fuel savings but also a reduction of exhaust gases. In theory, if one litre of gasoline produces 2.4 kilograms of carbon, and the average daily motorcycle takes 4 litre and 10 litres for a car, then there was around 28 thousand tons of carbon reduced. That figure does not include savings from aircraft and ships that stopped operating during Nyepi. Not to mention, other activities that produce carbon such as factories and households. If the calculation from Walhi Bali is true, the reduction could be a lot more than 30 thousand tons of carbon through the positive implementation of Nyepi in Bali. (Imagine the impact if the whole planet stopped for a day. Ed)

luminaries bali spirit festival@Arma | saturday 31 march
Roots:
The Luminaries formed in Venice, California, a place known for its vibrant music scene that has produced some of the most recognizable acts today. They were drawn together by their passion for all positive things in life and include three MCs and a group of musicians. They are currently working on their first album called One.
Sounds:
“Classic, feel-good boom-bap, to neo-soul mashed with super-charged funk-rock”
Where You Might Have Heard Them:
They’ve toured the festival circuit appearing at events like as Harmony Festival, Lightning in a Bottle, and Earthdance. They’ve also shared stage with some of the biggest names in the positive music scene such as Matisyahu and Michael Franti and Spearhead, along with veretan musicians like The Teacha, KRS-ONE, STS9 and India Arie.
www.beatmag.com
Why See Them:
If you’re into music with a strong positive message and want to shake all the negativity off, they’re for you. This is what the Luminaries are there to do, to make you feel good after stomping your feet into the ground and trying to change things for the better through their earth conscious lyrics. Check them out at Bali Spirit Fest at Arma on Saturday March 21. I’d get their earlier and see some of the other great acts on the lineup too.

Kid Kenobi Sky garden | saturday 31 march
Roots:
Growing up in the big lights of Sydney, Kid Kenobi is no padawan (or apprentice for that matter) with 15 years of DJing. After a string of wild successes that brought him to the forefront of the dance scene, he grew disenchanted with dance music in 2007. He picked himself up, and took responsibility for his musical path in life, creating some great sounds, which has helped to make him the DJ he is today.
Sounds:
Dance, house with heavy samples and a hint of the hip hop and a generous helping of dubstep.
Where You Might Have Heard Him:
Why See Him:
I bet this guy has more awards sitting in his cupboard than most high schools, which can mean only one thing, he’s a winner. Between him and the epicness that is Sky Garden, which one can arguably say is the most winning place in Kuta and you have a massive recipe for victory.
www.beatmag.com
Kid Kenobi has won a pretty impressive number of awards during his time in the scene. He won the People’s Choice NSW DJ of the year in 2001 at the Australian Dance Music Awards and was first place in the annual In the Mix DJ 50 poll three years in a row (20032005). He also won the Technics Australian DJ of the year in 2001-2005. His notable works have included “The Bump” which garnered an ARIA nomination and is a productive remixer with over 20 mixes of some of the world’s biggest names.

MANDEL TURNER hu’u bar | friday 06 april
Roots:
Not only a well travelled, experienced DJ, but a gifted singer as well. Turner is a native of New York and grew up in the 80’s, inspired by one of the all time greats, Larry Levan. His musical experience began back in the local Gospel choir as a child and moved later onto New York’s major clubs. He has a long list of DJ and singer shows all around the world, as well as plenty of performances around Indonesia and is now based in Paris.
Sounds:
Deep House, Soulful House.
Where You Might Have Heard Him:
Do the venues Kudeta, Anantara, W Hotel, or Hu’u Bar sound familiar? Mandel has seen plenty of his international gigs in Bali in recent years. He’s released countless vocal, DJ and collaboration mixed albums to critical acclaim all over the world.
www.beatmag.com
Why See Him:
From Shanghai to Moscow, Sydney to St. Petersberg, Berlin to Jakarta….the list goes on. If you like soulful, vocal and down-right sexy sounds, a night with Mandel Turner is for you. Join the man and his legion of fans to feel the groove at this one night only gig at Hu’u next week.

Matt Caseli woo bar | friday 06 april
Roots:
Matt Orr adopted the name Matt Caseli in 1996 to mark a move away from the urban productions that he had been previously associated with. He’s a DJ who’s been in all the right places and at all the right parties, and no more than his already 15 year residency in Pacha Ibiza.
Sounds:
Dance, house music, urban, underground
Where You Might Have Heard Him:
He spends his winters by headlining many of the world’s most glamorous clubs and cities. With a club repertoire that leads from Las Vegas to San Francisco and Hong Kong to Shanghai, it’s fair to say that his music expands beyond just the duties of a resident DJ. Aside from that, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, and Australia are on his list of destinations, and he’s been gigging here in Bali every winter for the last few doing successful shows in a variety of venues around town.
www.beatmag.com
Why See Him:
You can safely say that Matt Caseli knows how to entertain the people. He’s been doing it for a long time and all over the planet. Come and check out what he’s got in store for woo at Woo Bar on Friday 06 April.

kenny l. cocoon | saturday 07 april
Roots:
With some serious time and energy put into the Perth dance music scene, it’s not a far stretch to label Kenny L as one of the staples in Australian nightlife. He’s had a presence behind the 1’s & 2’s since the 90’s, and still remains behind them today.
Sounds:
All genres of dance music.
Where You Might Have Heard Him:
If you’ve partied in Perth or taken part in its upbeat nightlife, you already have heard him. If you’ve tuned in to RTR FM radio, the world’s longest running dance music radio program, you’ve also heard him. If you like some serious energy and watching an old school DJ do his thing, you’ll catch Kenny while he’s in Bali, then be able to say you heard him here!
www.beatmag.com
Why See Him:
In dance music, there’s always a mainstream layer. Then, there’s a massive part which is truly underground. Within that underground, often hides underground DJ’s who haven’t been the ones to come and go, or the ones to just arrive. They’re the guys who have been around since it came up and seen it all during its evolution. They’re the guys whose years of experience doesn’t translate onto paper, but only through their music. This is one of those guys….

the iron maidens boshe | saturday 07 april
Roots:
The Iron Maidens was formed in Los Angeles, California in 2001 as a tribute to the English rockers, Iron Maiden. The band has gone through several member changes and now consists of Kirsten Rosenberg (vocals), Nita Strauss (guitar), Courtney Cox (guitar), Wanda Ortiz (bass) and Linda McDonald (drums).
Sounds:
Heavy metal rock music
Where You Might Have Heard Them:
The band released their first album, World’s Only Female Tribute to Iron Maiden in June 2005. The band released their second album Route 666, which features a guest appearance by Motörhead guitarist Phil Campbell in May 2007. The band also has a DVD called Metal Gathering Tour Live in Japan 2010 that was released in August 2010. The Iron Maidens have won many awards such as best tribute band, and other awards from The Rock City News Awards, The LA Music Awards, and The All Access Magazine Award.
www.beatmag.com
Why See Them:
The Iron Maidens are not just an all female band that looks good, they also have a remarkable stage act that can put a lot of rock bands doing the worldwide circuit to shame. So if you are a fan of Iron Maiden or a metal head that simply wants to see a world class show, don’t miss the gals doing their thang and rockin’ Boshe on April 7.

Sandy Rivera karma beach batubelig | wednesday 11 april
Roots:
Born in New York, this name changer has a variety of aliases that include Auréi, D’Menace, Awesome Foursome, The Committee, Kings Of Tomorrow, Mysterious People, Organized Noize, Sandy Rivera, Sanjay, Sanjose, Soul Vision for his DJ and production ventures. He started DJing at the age of 13 and started producing house music in 1992.
Sounds:
Dance, house
Where You Might Have Heard Him:
Rivera’s most popular track was the 2000 release, “Finally” which peaked at number 24 on the UK Singles Chart and reached 17 on the Billboard dance chart. He additionally has been featured in compilation albums such as Ministry Of Sound, Hed Kandi and Warner Music. Rivera also owns BlackWiz and Deep Vision Records. He’s also played to large masses of people, in Yalta, he played to 15000 and in Green Valley in Brazil he played to almost 10,000 party goers.
With so much experience (and names) under one belt, I’d put my money that this is the house music show to watch out for. He’s a music mastermind that has managed to stay relevant in today’s constantly evolving scene. Catch him at Karma Beach in Batu Belig on April 11.

DJ PENA SOS SUPPER CLUB | FRIday 13 april
Roots:
Originally from Portugal, Pena changed his path in life in 1996, when the psychedelic scene in the Iberian nation convinced him to stop pursuing a career in law and become a bona fide DJ. In 2000, he shifted gears and began producing his own music and formed Flow Records.
Sounds:
Progressive
Where You Might Have Heard Him:
Pena has won numerous awards including four Danceclub magazine awards for being the best trance DJ. He is also responsible for the Flow parties in Portugal which feature progressive house, progressive, techno and tech house. The festival also brought Audiojack, Dousk, Minilogue, Guy J, Jerome Isma-Ae, Ramon Tapia, Extrawelt, Mashtronic, Luke Dzierzek, Okain, Motion, Antix/Fiord to Portugal for the first time.
www.beatmag.com
Why See Him:
This DJ left the world of law to bring music to the masses and get people dancing. Surely, it’s a noble cause and one worth participating in. He takes tons of different genres across the musical spectrum to delivers them with a powerful beat. If you’re into great Iberian DJing at its best, check out DJ Pena.

Battle of the Bands
T
he Hard Rock Calling-international battle of the bands event at Hard Rock Café Bali this year started on March 14. The judges voted on the best band based on their performance on stage. The first night, six bands including Superman is Dead and Dialog Dini Hari gave it their all with a few songs each. The crowd, loyal to their respective group, cheered for their favorite band. On the second night of the event, there were strong winds outside and a storm forecast which didn’t faze the bands or their fans. All the musicians competed to get that golden ticket to London and play with huge acts including Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon and Soundgarden. Finally, there were two bands that made it into the next round of the battle; they were Nymphea, a rock band from Bali and Black Finit, a reggae band from Jogjakarta. On March 18, it was time for the final event and the bands left included Dialog Dini Hari, Superman is Dead, Nymphea and Black Finit. They gave their best shot and Balawan along with other judges including our Mr Dethu finally found their regional winner. Superman Is Dead was triumphant and they will compete with the winners from 85 other regions and hopefully make it to the top! Voting has already begun - Visit www.facebook.com/ hardrockcafebali to vote or www.hardrock.com for additional details.

he Miss Bahiana contest was dominated by the exoticism of Indonesian women. The beauty pageant was judged through a vote based on the amount of applause for each contestant from their fans in the crowd. Bulan, one of the most elegant contestants had all the charm and the audience in the palm of her hand, and in the end won the tiara. DJ Angga and DJ Iwan Blow supplied beats through the event and also did a collaboration with some bongo players which got the place rockin’.

unset sessions at the W are always good. Woo Bar, located in W Resort and Spa, held an event with a special performance by The Magician. The show started up with Mr Sukamu, and soon enough, people filled the entire venue. The Magician started his dark arts afterward and conjured his beats for around 90 minutes. The crowd seemed impressed with his magic with some chilling and some dancing until the night grew darker and darker.

he normal balmy Bali weather was suddenly turned upside down on this particular Saturday night with one of the biggest snap storms in living history hitting town an hour before the show. However, the weather was finally back to normal by the time the DJ hour arrived. Mint once again proved that it’s got more than the location going for it with DJ Ian Pooley hitting the decks. They showed that they know their DJs and Pooley was again no exception. The portly German got up on the decks and spun a bunch of music that was almost hypnotic in its danceability. Everybody in the whole place was gyrating like their was no tomorrow. Great music that literally kept everyone on the floor.

Coming from the mystical land of california, eric larson is here on this island and this audiokiller is ready to take over.
I come from the land of huge breasts, beaches, bros and tattoos, a little place I like to call Orange County, California. Funny cause I’ve never seen an orange tree there my entire life, but that’s ok cause I’m more of an apple type of guy. What's one thing about Bali the has killed your faith in humanity? The price of alcohol. What's one thing that has restored it? The price of a “massage”. Look at your itunes 25 Most Played playlist, what is in position 1 and position 25? In position 1 is Doomsday by Nero and wow in the 25th spot would be Survival of the Idiots by SpongeBob Square Pants (my sons uses my computer a lot apparently). What should be on the playlist but isn't? I’m downloading a bunch of new Knife Party, Skrillex, Datsik, Bingo Players, Albin Myers, Chris Lake, Zedd and Tommy Trash. So that’ll be in my playlist in about a month cause the internet speed here in Bali is slower than a 1994 dial up. You're in a desert, walking along in the sand, when all of a sudden you look down and see a tortoise. It's crawling toward you. You reach down and you flip the tortoise over on its back. The tortoise lays on its back, its belly baking in the hot sun, beating its legs trying to turn itself over, but it can't. Not without your help. But you're not helping. Why? Cause I’m a big fan of the hare and have money riding on this race. If you could sum up all your tattoos in a single sentence, what would that magical sentence be? Tattoos are chick magnets, I only got them to get laid, but now I’m so far in there’s no turning back. What music genres need to be preserved and what needs to be burned away from human memory?
Classical, Electro House, Glam Rock, Dubstep and Epic Anthems need to be preserved while Reggae-Tone, Mombaton, Dirty Dutch and boring put you sleep Tribal Island House should be deleted from all existence. I wonder if I’m going to lose any Facebook fans from that answer? Ask yourself a question. Where’s your weekend?

a
Answer it. Well if it’s only one weekend I have to say Las Vegas cause I can see the sickest DJs in the world, party with rockstars in the hottest clubs with smoking hot girls wearing next to nothing, drink 24/7, hit up the best pool parties, show up at after hours at 6am and it’s still going off, “dine” at an all-you-can-eat buffet in the local gentlemen’s club and every sin known to man is delivered to your hotel room with a smile. Homegrown & Well Known:
SARI NYMPHEA
Without having any formal vocal training, Sari can still easily prove that she’s one of the best female rock singers Indonesia has ever had. With her band, Nymphea, they have become one of the biggest bands in Bali. Across Indonesia, they are quite well known especially in Java. They have a solid fanbase called Nymphriends. Sari, who’s half Ubud royalty and half Australian, is often asked to do guest vocals for bands like Superman Is Dead, Dialog Dini Hari, etc. If the Indonesian rock scene is fair, it shouldn’t be long before Sari reaches so-called rock stardom.
www.beatmag.com
How did you start getting involved in music? It all started from a tiny idea from one of my aunts, Ratna Cora. She thought that it would be cool to have a band in the family. This all happened when I was still in primary school, 6th grade to be exact. She gathered the youngies of the family, who were four of my cousins and myself. We started our family band, “Matasiwa”. At first we only had very little knowledge of playing the instruments, but we kept practicing (at home - no formal schooling). The good thing
was that nearly all members of the family from my dad’s side were music lovers, so we got all the support we needed. We played “Top 40” songs at family gatherings, at the church, and we even got jobs at some big hotels around Nusa Dua! Not bad for a band of kids haha. When at last I finished high school, I started to get to know people from the “indie community” in Denpasar. I started witnessing people just like me—not big celebrities or rock stars on TV—writing their own songs, and singing their heart out, shouting the words that they wrote. I was amazed! Matasiwa
Funny actually, when the idea of Matasiwa first popped up, I chose to be a bassist. But because I just couldn’t get the hang of it, the other members suggested me to sing rather than play the bass guitar, because it wouldn’t be as hard to learn. And I thank them dearly because of it. You have such an amazing vocal quality, a mix between a soul and metal singer, did you go to a special course for that? Wow, thank you. I never really had any special training. I think I just got used to singing like that because when I was a kid, my family liked to listen to rock sounds. And just maybe..... (I have to learn more about psychology before knowing for sure) because when I was a school kid—from primary to high school—I wasn’t really the popular sort, mostly laughed at and picked on. Just maybe that’s why I started grasping the rough sort of music more and more. You and your band once moved to Jakarta for the pursuit of rock stardom, but it didn’t seem to work out. What happened? That was a disaster!! We wasted a whole year and a lot of money living in Jakarta doing nearly nothing. Within a year, we only performed on stage about three or four times, I think. Other than that we cooked, cleaned the house, watched TV, went out and got drunk, and sometimes went to see other indie gigs. We weren’t the sort of people that socialized really well at that time, especially because it was in a totally different area, where the way you socialize was not the same as at home. So we didn’t get too far in getting gigs for Nymphea. But in the end we got the best things we needed at the time. We became wiser, especially in decision making, and our relationship within the band got closer than ever! So, personally, I don’t regret one bit of that “disaster” hehe... Do you ever want to move again to Jakarta and what’s your next strategy to reach the goal? I don’t know. Not at this stage anyway. Online social networking is getting better than ever. Being based in Bali is better for Nymphea at this moment, I would say. But we really do want to go and have another trip to Jakarta, even do another whole three-month Java tour! Just like what we did in 2008. About our goal, the only thing we really want and need now is to get more people in Indonesia
Speaking of fanbase, Nymphriends, not only massive in Bali, Java as well. Anywhere else? How do you maintain this? Yes, we are really happy, proud, and touched to see the many Nymphriends now showing up at our shows and on our social sites. At the moment, we maintain our relationship with them by contacting, now and then, one person from each area, who has been chosen to be the head coordinator by the other Nymphriends. And especially for the ones in Bali and Java (because of the “not so far distance”), we try to spare time to go and meet them occasionally. Like what we did in December 2011, we called the coordinator of the Nymphriends in Malang (Java) to set up a small gig for us and we went there by car, just the four band members. We had a great time! Small gig, huge energy! Nymphriends from all around East Java came that day!

How did you end up being a vocalist?
and other countries to know about us and our music. We believe that everything else will follow. How do we do that? Twitter! Haha... Like I said, online social networking is great! And of course, we have to keep writing our songs from heart and soul.
Nymphriends other than in Bali and Java? We have actually got emails from some who claim to be from Makassar (Sulawesi) and Padang (Sumatera). We are hoping that the Nymphriends communities could grow faster there if we get to perform there one day. How do you find the music scene in Bali? My personal opinion, yes, it is getting better. When Nymphea first started in 2005, most bands were like one another. Not many were unique. Of course, now there still is the problem of many bands popping up sounding very much like some other band that inspired them, but at least now there is a much wider range of genres within the music scene in Bali. Another thing which I think is a major leap is that now bands know much more about what to do next after recording their first demo and can get into the local radios much easier than back then. And because there are bands from Bali who have already gone national, even international, I bet that it won’t take long for the other “good-band” in Bali to rise up to the surface. About the solidarity, I think that now it isn’t going too well. Most bands only gather when they are performing at the same event, and those who do spend more time together are usually very closed in within their own group of people. Maybe it would be much better if everyone could spare more time to talk and share thoughts. Just to keep the friendship and the scene going.
www.beatmag.com
faded away, and I started hunting for friends that would join me to start up a new band to shout my own heart out. Then I met Sogol, Gus Arie, and Risky. Nymphea was born.

u’u Bar took on the big smoke last Saturday night with their second ‘One Night in Jakarta’ show at Dragonfly Jakarta.
Winging in from Bali and staying at the Aston Rasuna, the crew met for dinner at Bluegrass in Epiwalk Kuningan before heading to the fabled turf of Jakarta’s number one night club, Dragonfly. The venue packs them in on Saturday nights without fail and since it was Nyepi the day before, people from Bali were in town en force and most were heading for Dragonfly. The entourage arrived in two black SUVs ready for action and burst through the doors into the still almost empty club to begin the night. Bottles were opened, let the party begin! The tunes were smooth, first from the residents, both DF’s and hu’u’s, then the main act, and a man who’s come a long way in recent months, returning after a few years in KL to Bali, and now headlining at Dragonfly. No wonder DJ Glynn Tandy had a smile from ear to ear after the first track was laid down as the night began in earnest. But he wasn’t alone, the hu’u crew were right behind and up on the decks with him. Chef PM was pulling all his tricks out of the bag rousing the crowd to Bali heights with aid from MC Gooze, Dimas and Janne. The clincher was the hu’u bandanas thrown from the DJ booth and wrapped around foreheads in true Kuta style. I don’t think they had seen anything like that before in the hallowed land of the dragon. The place filled after midnight and kept on kicking till very late. Once again hu’u had made its mark on the Big Durian.

idled up next door to the newly opened Pepito’s supermarket on the Nusa Dua By Pass, Honey & Bread presents the perfect venue for breakfast, lunch and light dinner, and due to its location, is ideal for commuters to stop off for a takeaway bite to eat. The distressed wooden interior and country kitchen knick knacks give the feel of a contemporary English café, with nice little touches like menus hung on the back of every chair and jars of colourful stuff dotted about the shelves adding to the overall ambience. The menu is a concise affair, with just the right amount of choice from each section including salads, sandwiches, pancakes, gelatos muffins and a few Asian specialties thrown in for good measure.

As well as a mouthwatering assortment of cakes and pastries, unsurprisingly there is a huge selection of fresh baked European style bread on offer, as well as a dedicated menu of specialty honey sourced from throughout Indonesia. Forget the sugar and sweeten your tea with the finest Balinese, Java or Sumbawan madu.Alternatively, you can also takeaway your own 200ml glass jar of bee juice for less than 100k. And that’s not all – Honey & Bread’s real trump card lies in its menu of over 30 loose-leaf teas. Served in quaint, retro style China cups with classy polished silver teapots, choose from a medley of black and green teas, perfumed blends, herbal infusions, Indonesian tips and iced varieties for those with a thirst that needs quenching pronto. For my first visit to Honey & Bread, I make a beeline straight for one of their special signature drinks (26k+). Made with iced tea, honey, fresh fruit, sorbet and plenty of ice, they are about as cool and refreshing as sticking your head in a freezer. Meanwhile I let my pot of vanilla green tea (29k+) gently steep as I order up the chef’s salad (35k+) - a generously sized portion indeed, comprising of iceberg lettuce, tomatoes and hard boiled miniature eggs topped with slivers of cheese and beef ham with a side of thousand island dressing.

T
he Oakley Pro, the annual opening event for the Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championship Tour keeps off this week. The six-star event will again be hosted at the fabled Canggu Beach, Bali, Indonesia from the 1st to 14th April.
www.beatmag.com
The Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championships has become the primary driver of the development of professional surfing in the region. With the continued popularity and growth of surfing through South East Asia, Oakley have once again worked with the ISC to extend access to the Oakley Pro 12 to surfers throughout SE Asia via inclusion in the new Asian Surfing Championships Series. “Oakley has been instrumental in the growth of Surfing in Indonesia and beyond,” stated Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championship CEO Tipi Jabrik. “They were the first company to commit to the newly developed Asian Tour and set the standard for last year, culminating in being awarded Best Event for 2011. We are really excited to see Oakley take it to the next level for 2012”.
12 at Canggu Beach
A Mecca for the international surfing community, Canggu is a natural photo studio with images regularly gracing the pages of magazines around the world. Oakley’s dedication to performance made it an easy decision to again commit to the area as the venue for this year’s event. “Oakley always seems to score great waves at Canggu and all the surfers are stoked Oakley has again decided to return. We will definitely see some of the best surfing of the year go down,” noted 2009 Coca-Cola ISC Champion and Oakley athlete Lee Wilson, “and with this being the first event of the year, everyone is really looking forward to going big!” Oakley has forged a reputation in Indonesia for blurring the lines between the action on the beach and the virtual world. This year will be no different with Oakley’s exceptional social media and online reach to keeping those not lucky enough to be at Canggu updated with the latest action.
The Battles of Life By: @JohanJT
Every action and adventure fan in town should get ready for some of the great battles you won’t find in other movies. Witness the super tense SWAT assault on the nest of a merciless crime lord, a teenage girl and boy who fight in a deadly competition for their homes, and a Greek hero who hunts the gigantic Titans.
The Raid (Serbuan Maut) Action, Crime, Thriller. Writer & Director: Gareth Evans. Cast: Iko Uwais, Doni Alamsyah, Yayan Ruhian, Ray Sahetapy, Joe Taslim, Ananda George.
From the writer-director Gareth Evans who brought the sensational action film “Merantau” (2009) showing the Indonesian martial art of Pencak Silat. Last year his new world-acclaimed “The Raid” got its highest compliments from many international film festival critics and audiences. This year, The Raid will screen broader for international audiences in Hollywood and surely in Indonesia. Seriously, pump up your adrenaline, you will gasp a lot with no break throughout this said-to-be masterpiece of action movie!
The Hunger Games Action, Drama, Fantasy. Director: Gary Ross. Writers: Suzanne Collins, Billy Ray. Cast: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, Isabelle Fuhrman.
Set in a dystopian future where the evil empire, the Capitol, selects a boy and girl from the 12 surrounding districts to fight to the death on live television, Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence, Winter Bones) volunteers to take her younger sister’s place for the latest match and compete along with newly found partner, Peeta (Josh Hutcherson). Adapted from the bestselling fantasy novel with same title, “The Hunger Games” will both thrill and touch. Equip yourself with weapons and popcorns for the battle!
Wrath of the Titans Action, Adventure, Fantasy. Director: Jonathan Liebesman. Writers: Dan Mazeau, David Johnson. Cast: Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes, Rosamund Pike, Bill Nighy.
The first sequel to “Clash of the Titans”, which was a remake of the original 1981 film, got mixed critical reaction. Taking a chance, director John Liebesman who made Battle Los Angeles and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning is bringing a more humongous story, literally, with the gigantic titans into the heroic adventures of Perseus. The visual effects are undoubtedly stupendous for sure, so see it in a 3D cinema for maximum thrill. Choose your side, the Olympian gods or the underworld Titans!

Die Antwoord Ten$ion
Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder
How on earth did ‘out there’ music ever get ‘in there’ before the advent of the interweb and MyFace or Twit-tube? I shudder to think of all the true original weirdos/ geniuses (depends on where you stand) who have created groundbreaking music that never got heard en mass, and are now stuck back working behind the tills of the nearest Woolies dreaming up ways in which to brutally murder their boss. Fortunately for South African rap-rave mentalists Die Antwoord (and any supermarket managers in Cape Town), the digital age has well and truly cometh, and thanks to the viral phenomenon are now one of the top YouTube hits with their collection of unsettling videos and schizophrenic zef music (think blue eyeliner, bleached hair, sweat bands, cars with overly powerful sound systems… you know, the usual stuff). Essentially a duo comprising of Ninja (grimy bloke with missing/gold teeth) and YoLandi (female albino mental institution escapee?), it’s safe to say that Die Antwoord won’t appeal to everyone, but underneath the confrontational veneer there are moments of maturity that show there’s more to these two than meets the eye. After 60 seconds of what sounds like a Paul Simon B-side circa Graceland, album opener “Never Le Nkemise” wallops you round the head with a dose of rap dubstep that pretty much sets the tone for what’s to come. “I Fink U Freeky” then goes into overdrive, with Ninja and Yo-Landi trading off Afrikaans tinted rhyming flows that sound like a staple gun being fired into your ears. Other standout track “Fatty Boom Boom” lays down a rowdy Zulu drumbeat with even more implausibly hyperactive, high-pitched vocals dancing around over the top. I could go on and attempt to explain the other tracks but you probably get the picture by now (the album cover image of Yo-Landi eating a human heart is also a pretty good indicator). So do yourself a favour and load up a Die Antwoord vid on YouTube. Like it or loathe it we should all be thankful to the Internet gods for original geniuses/ weirdos like this. Dan Ashcroft

Ipad 3
The new iPad 3 is not revolutionary, it’s evolutionary, and according to Apple it’s even “resolutionary”, whatever that means. As with the Apple iPhone 4S bump, the hotly anticipated new iPad launch is largely about incremental, hardware upgrades; under-thebonnet stuff that clearly annoys the hell out of everyone seeking a headline-grabbing design change. Put the new iPad 3 side by side with the iPad 2 and the improvement is quite visibly clear. On the older iPad, apps in folders are just blobs of pixelated colour; on the new one you can almost make out text. The Apple Retina Display smooths out edges and renders text pin-sharp so ebooks, websites and documents are so much easier on the eye. There’s better contrast, greater definition with still and moving images, and better colour saturation – an improvement of 44 per cent over the iPad 2, Apple reckons. Cellular World. Jl. Toward “An Expanded Field” of Drawing
T
he Tonyraka Arts Gallery has opened an exhibition titled Painting@ Drawing. It presents a selection of drawing as a way to see an ‘evolution of drawing’ in contemporary art practice. Seen as an element of painting, drawing isn’t just one element among others. It’s specifically highlighted as the superior element of painting, the main part determining the character of the painter. If you’re into the style of the contemporary art, come and check out this unique exhibition. Opens on March 30 at 6.30pm. Tonyraka Art Gallery, Jl. W H O SE CAN V AS
Helmut kanD
A
n Austrian artist, Helmut Kand is always on the lookout. On his travels through the continents, he gathers sights, notions, desires, experiences, pleasures and half-finished daydreams. Color is the first thing about his pictures, which attracts attention and captures the gaze and stimuli to explore his content.
The paintings invite reflection of one possible reality of our world, enhanced with moods, visions, thrills, joy, eroticism and irony while remaining true to the poetic surrealism on which it is based. Intended excursions to the daydream world provoke cheerfulness, sensuality and reflection, arousing the desire for an expedition into his art.

Studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, he has made numerous exhibitions in Europe, Australia, USA, Canada, Argentina, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia and Argentina that has helped to make him internationally known. The current Bali exhibition, Heart in Bali – Head in Vienna includes 13 wooden sculptures carved by Balinese artist Ketut Radio and surrealistically painted by Helmut Kand and his team of Bali artisans. It will be displayed until April 17 at Warisan Restaurant, Bar & Galleries. Jl. Kerobokan Raya No. 38, Kuta, Bali. Tel: +62 361 731175

Atma Spa takes intimacy to new levels at this modern hotel located in the midst of Legian. The spa is small, with only three rooms, but manages to deliver maximum warmth, friendliness and a professional product nevertheless. The adage, “training will out” is exemplified here as the staff are well informed, well spoken and well presented. 101 Legian uses colour to great effect throughout the hotel and the spa is painted in a soft blue. The three spa rooms include two singles and a double with it’s own bath and shower for wet treatments.
Feel: Despite the size, the menu at Atma Spa features all you really ever need with a range of massages from the Balinese to a signature massage, a hot stone and a Thai Stretching massage and even a four-hander. Spa packages include wraps and scrubs, facials, manicures and pedicures.
We opted for the basic sixty-minute Balinese massage, a delightfully soothing long stroke massage that worked deep into the tissues with just the right amount of pressure.
Ingredients: The spa economises on space yet offers three delightful essential massage oils, including inspiration, which had a wonderfully spicy aroma. Scrubs offered include boreh, pandan and an intoxicating blend of coconut and turmeric.
Magic: 101 Legian is a new concept in hotels for Bali and is really well done, full of colourful features, and even though the rooms are quite compact, they are beautifully designed and well appointed. The public areas are vast by contrast. The spa is also compact and tucked away so that guests feel pleasantly cocooned in the experience.

There are two villas, Villa Sun and Villa Sea. Villa Sun is dominated by orange and white colors and it is in the shape of a circle and is decorated with decorative lamps made of shells inspired by Indonesian styled domes. Meanwhile the Villa Sea is dominated by blue, just like the sea. When you approach the living room at Villa Sea, you will be amazed by a very big chandelier made of hundreds of round shaped shells that look like clouds in the sky.
Atmosphere
To those of you who look for a relaxing placeto stay, this villa definitely gives you more than you would expect. The modern villas’ design reflects a fresh look on how beautiful and comfortable tropical life can be. The
handmade furniture and accessories were carefully selected and the designer fuses Asian hospitality in a European style.
Features
Both villas include 42” flat-screen TVs with two free form “beanbags” adding a comfortable seating option. The other media facilities include a surround sound system, DVD player, iPod dock and all the cables you need to connect your laptop to the media system in order to watch movies on the big screen TV. The TV is also connected to 60 local and international TV channels.
Price
The price depends on the seasons, ranging from 295 USD /night in low season and 390 USD /night in high season.

Fable:
Been Caught Recording
Fable, the Jakarta old cracks from the 90’s alternative era—and once tagged as the Jane’s Addiction of Indonesia—apparently are not dead yet. Just a few weeks ago they released their first full-length eponymous album. Formed in 1994, the trio, Adi Cumi (vocal), Temy (bass) and Anton Not (guitar) first created quite a big buzz with “Bintang” on Prambors Radio (Jakarta) and Ardan (Bandung), and then was included in Sony Music Indonesia’s compilation Indie Ten in 1998. After that they went under the radar. They only released mini albums and a few singles. Due to the busy schedule of each of the member (Adi works as a freelance illustrator, Temy and Anton both work in a radio), it took them more than a decade to finally press their “proper” record. Consisting of 10 alternative rock-fueled songs, some of them are actually the compositions that they often played during their shows from the early days till today. They also had one of the legends of Jakarta music scene, Robin Noxa (R.I.P.), contributing in one song, “Ta’ Ada yang Gelap”. Go check out the album and keep yourself updated by following them @fableofficial on Twitter.
