It wasn’t long ago, maybe ten years now, that there were tens of bars set up right along the beach from Kuta to Seminyak which were eventually demolished after authorities made a law that any buildings on the beach were illegal. Years passed and then bars started sprouting up next to the beach in Seminyak, not exactly on the beach like before, and it seemed it was all fine to have beach bars again. Many tourists come to Bali for that kind of thing. Sitting around on the beach listening to music and having a cold one while the sun goes down sounds like a good way to spend your holiday on a tropical island and those bars are busy till this day, and there’s no wonder why. Batu Belig beach has seen some changes over the past couple of years and bars have been popping up all over the beach front. Most of them were closed last week and dismantled. A lot of people around town have voiced their concerns over these hot spots being closed but at the end of the day the rules are there, the controversial spatial law has to be upheld at some point and somewhere. While there appears to be other more outrageous developments going on with little regard to the spatial laws, those bars on the beach, which from a distance didn’t appear to be hurting anyone and gave great joy to many, have gone. Possibly there will be some kind of resolution for some of them to continue trading, but for now the party on the beach is on shaky ground. But, don’t fret, there are plenty more parties and venues in other parts of town to take care of your nightlife instincts. Check the Main Stage and Regular Events pages inside for all the details and have a grand two weeks on the island.

New Beachwalk Mall

s c o o p

026

There’s a new mall on the beach in Kuta for those of you that love to shop and tan at the same time. Sahid Kuta Lifstyle Resort has opened up Beachwalk, a 3.7 hectare retail and lifestyle hub for tourists and locals to enjoy. The mall was architecturally inspired by rice field terraces and has an eco friendly low rise design and large open spaces. They’ll be food vendors, they’ll be shops… but what we at The Beat are most excited about is a new XXI Cineplex! This will be the first new theater in Bali in over 10 years! Another notable venue is the Sienna Café brought to Beachwalk by Ku De Ta. Now that’s what I call dinner and a movie.

Earth Saving Picture Photographers young and old, you can help save the earth by raising awareness with your photographs and have fun doing it. Hard Rock Hotel Bali wants to see you doing anything to reduce the effects of carbon pollution. Basically you need to send in a picture of your interpretation on how you can contribute to the fight against climate change. Send the shot to marcom.bali@hardrockhotels.net. The best submitter will be awarded with a one week of free accommodation in a deluxe room, including breakfast and lunch or dinner, at Hard Rock Hotel Bali and a one time spa treatment for two at Rock Spa.

Rich underwater bio system brought to surface Despite its sheer size and wealth of its natural biomarine population, the coral reef system in Pacific region, which is half as big as the United States, has not enjoyed its rightful status as the world’s largest coral reef region known as the Coral Reef Triangle; hence the conservation effort hasn’t been as it should be. The WWF together with Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries and Food Security (CTI-CFF) are trying to bring awareness to a wider audience by launching the Coral Triangle Day on June 9. The Coral Triangle Day will be celebrated with events held simultaneously in six countries including Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and other countries in the Pacific. During the one-day celebration ocean conservation themed activities like beach clean-ups; sustainable seafood dinners; exhibitions; bazaars; and beach parties, among others will be conducted at different locations within the region. More info on the event can be accessed at www.coraltriangle.com

Local artist Monez Gusmang’s depiction of Jack O’Neill will be traveling to California where it will be auctioned off in Santa Cruz along with a bunch of other artists’ portraits. The exhibition, which was held in Mantra showcased the travelling art show in Bali which went to Japan and will end on the West Coast.

The Coolest Pool Party in Kuta Returns The city’s coolest pool party is back for a new season at The 101 Legian’s Rooftop Dine & Music Lounge. The launching of the Sky Pool Party Wet & Sexy will commence on Wednesday, April 25 at 4pm. What’s so cool about it is the sexy and wet concept of course, which combines the wild atmosphere of bikini-clad girls, bubbles, cool lightings and cabanas with the famous Kuta sunset in the backdrop. The party is guaranteed to last well into the night with cocktails, BBQ and other exciting things going on pool side. So if that sounds good to you, swing by Rooftop Dine & Music Lounge at The 101 Legian every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.

Max Aloisi (lead guitar & vocal) of locally based band PANDORA has moved onto the final round in the Live and Unsigned music competition in the UK. The competition is one of the largest original music competitions in the UK with over 40.000 musicians entering. He has passed through the regional audition stage and now it’s up to the fans to vote for him to get to the regional final. From there the next step is a chance to play in the final at The O2 Arena in London in July. www.liveandunsigned.uk.com

the virgin akasaka | wednesday 16 may Roots:

The Virgin, featuring Dara Rizky Ruhiana (Dara) on vocals and Cameria Happy Pramita (Mita) on guitar, was formed in 2008. Immediately afterward, rock icon turned music mogul, Ahmad Dhani, took them under his wing. Dhani’s role in the duo’s success has been instrumental from the beginning. Earlier that year he accidentally heard Mita’s song, a very raw take of what was to become The Virgin’s first hit single ‘Cinta Terlarang’. Dhani was so impressed by Mita’s writing skills that he invited her to record the song. Later he found the right voice to sing the song in Dara, a Tasikmalaya native, who had just gotten eliminated from a national singing competition.

Sounds:

Pop Rock

Where You Might Have Heard tHem:

www.beatmag.com

Probably on your cell while waiting for your call to be answered. In the heyday of personal ring tones a couple years back, ‘Cinta Terlarang’ was downloaded by a huge number of adolescents and the band was pushed to the top of Indonesian pop chart. In the next two years Mita and Dara won many awards for their brand of melodic contemporary rock. Since ‘Cinta Terlarang’ rocked the airwave in 2009, a series of their subsequent singles were on heavy rotation by radio, TV shows, and most likely, waiting rooms.

Why See them:

The Virgin is on the island to promote their first studio album, ‘Yes I Am’, which was cut last year. It contains nine songs including their first single ‘Cinta Terlarang’. The band may be well known for their ballads but The Virgin really lit up during their live performances. While the cute Dara is still the one turning heads, Mita in her cool androgynous swagger commands the stage. And of course, who doesn’t want to be among the Virginity (what the fans are called) for a whole night of top notch Indonesian pop music?

Roots:

This dance duo is made up of Djs Zki (René ter Horst) and Dobre (Gaston Steenkist) who are from Haarlem, the Netherlands. They were formerly known as The Goodmen and have produced tracks under various names since the early 90s. They are first generation house music producers and have reinvented their sound multiple times in their decades long career together.

Sounds:

House, dance, electronic

Where You Might Have Heard tHem:

As The Goodmen, they released “Give it Up” which hit number one in the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart in 1993. The duo have over 200 releases and have 50 remixes for artists including of Roger Sanchez, Stereo MCs, Britney Spears, Copyright, Bob Sinclar, Fedde Le Grand & Funkerman and Laidback Luke. Some of their hits include “I Wanna Be U”, “A Star is Born”, and “Always and Forever”.

www.beatmag.com

Why See them:

These guys rock the house and when the house to be rocked in question is Hu’u bar, you know its going to be an awesome show. They’ve been producing music since the 90s and the repertoire is reportedly enormous, so expect a varied set full of pumping beats.

dave seaman mint | friday 18 may

Roots:

Dave Seaman was born in Leeds in 1968 and already knew he wanted to devote his life to music when he was eight years old. His school councilor disapproved of this choice, but school councilors are seldom ever right and history proves that Seaman seems to have made the right choice. He played weddings and parties in high school and even won a trip to New York to attend the New Music Seminar which led him to an editor position at the then new Mixmag where he was for three years. His first fully professional DJ gig was in 1990 at Shelly’s in Stoke where he spun vinyl with Sasha and Laurent Garnier.

Sounds:

Some call him the pioneer of house.

Where you might have heard of him:

www.beatmag.com

He was one half of Brothers in Rhythm, which made ‘Such A Good Feeling’, a track that became a UK Top 20 hit. He was also responsible for ‘Mixmag Live Volume’ 1 with Carl Cox in 1991 which became the first electronic compilation to be commercially available. He launched Stress Records, a label that released tracks by Sasha, Danny Tenaglia, John Digweed and Groove Armada’s Andy Cato. He’s produced beats for Kylie Minogue, Take That and Pet Shop and U2, to Michael Jackson. Alanis Morissette, David Bowie and New Order have all commissioned his remixes.

Why See him:

Mint has been bringing world class DJs to its decks and they clearly know their EDM. Seaman has an impressive pedigree in house music and is a natural fit for the Mint scene and his style of DJing is a slam dunk for the crowd there.

tristan garner sky garden | friday 18 may

Roots:

One of the select few acts getting to properly represent France on the dance music map, Tristan Garner is showing no signs of slowing down. He bursted into the production scene in late 2006 and has consistently dropped smash hits every year since, with each year seeing more growth and popularity. Garner’s productions are not only an essential part of some of the biggest Dj’s playlists, but also international smash hits scattered all across the universal sound waves. Following in the footsteps of French talent such as Daft Punk, Cerrone, and Cassius…Tristan Garner is leaving his own imprints in the sand.

Sounds:

Electro House, House, Trance, Progressive House.

Where You Might Have Heard Him:

www.beatmag.com

You might be one of the 2 million + viewers of “Give Love” on YouTube, or you might be one of the (who knows how many) million more who went crazy on a dance floor listening to it being played by DJ’s all over the planet. Another one of Garner’s newer smash hits ‘Overdrive’ has also found wild success and been bounced back and forth between speakers on every continent. Tristan Garner is not only a highly successful producer of dance floor massives, but a gifted DJ behind the decks as well.

Why See Him:

An artist just now growing into a huge range of music potential, Garner is on his way to experiencing wild success. If his accomplishments to date are any indication of how far that success might reach, this is another chance to witness a true international talent in Bali. Listening to Garners’s ‘Xtra Life’ podcasts, shows he has a unique sound in the studio, as well as in the mixes of his own energetic DJ sets.

RAMON PAPANA KLAPA | SATURday 19 may

Roots:

Ramon Papana Tommybens, or Ramon Papana, is first and foremost an entertainer. He is well-known in the national entertainment scene with his progressive concepts in music and performing arts. After graduating from high school in Jakarta, Papana travelled to Germany and England and became interested in DJing. He returned to Indonesia in 1979 and helped to cultivate the DJ culture in this country. Besides DJing, Papana continues to pursue his passion for writing and particularly comedy. He writes humorous articles for top national publications as well as comedy scripts for TV and stage shows. Papana was behind the production of some of the most memorable comedy shows on national television. He also produced a number of sitcoms with fellow top entertainers.

Sound:

Stand up comedy.

Where you might have heard of him:

Ramon Papana was credited as producer in numerous popular comedy stage and TV shows like Lenong Rumpi (Gossip Lenong Group), Hari Harry Mau (Willing Harry’s Day), Hari Harry Gila (Crazy Harry’s Day) on Anteve, Rojali & Juleha on RCTI, and F-2 on TPI. Now, as a stand-up comedy is gaining momentum in the local entertainment industry, he has successfully put himself on the map as one of the most recognized Indonesian comics today.

www.beatmag.com

Why see him:

In his trademark all-white get up, he is now widely considered a legend within the national stand-up comedy circle. In 1997, when standup comedy in Indonesia was a long way from what it has become now, Ramon Papana had the nerve to open the first comedy club in Indonesia, called The Indonesian Comedy Café; for that alone, he deserves a big round of applause. After launching his book on how to become a standup comic recently - aptly titled Kitab Suci (Holy Book), Ramon Papana is back on stage performing one of the things he loves to do most: stand-up.

OPOLOPO & AMALIA WOO BAR | sUNday 20 may Roots:

Metaphorically envision decades back, a prophet of funk & soul, planting a seed, or rather handing off a musical baton to a gifted chosen one who would be in charge of representing funk and soul in today’s underground music. That’s Opolopo. Now, envision a vocalist that was destined to accompany such talent, to complete the full circle. That’s Amalia. Opolopo has a wealth of experience in creating extremely unique productions which encompass the sounds of multiple genres, all the while keeping a special flavor and twist. Amalia is the icing on the cake.

Sounds:

Funk, Soul, Swing, Boogie.

Where You Might Have Heard Them:

www.beatmag.com

Anyone partaking in the Winter Music Conference of 2012 most likely heard the sounds of Opolopo’s ‘Mutants’ release moving and grooving the Miami dance floors. If you’re a connoisseur of true funky and soulful music, and up to date on today’s talent pool holding down the genre, you might already be familiar with Opolopo. Labeled ‘the first lady of modern funk’, Amalia’s knack for representing the genre also shines in her newest album ‘Art Slave’, produced by none other than the aforementioned Opolopo. Together, you’ll know once you’ve heard them.

Why See Them:

It’s more than a hunch that this will be a special night and one that fits perfectly when you put passionate musicians and a passionate crowd in an small underground space. Inside the nightlife of Bali there are always hidden pockets of unique vibes and an appreciation for music which boasts substance and soul. This should make for a great chance to experience such - just let go and enjoy...

dash berlin adora club sanur | friday 25 may Roots:

Dash Berlin was born Jeffrey X. Sutorius. He was a former record shop assistant and an avid collector of classic trance vinyl in his hometown of The Hague, Holland. It comes as no surprise that he lists dance music pioneers such as Sven Vath, Oliver Lieb and Sander Kleinenberg as his main influences.

Sounds:

Mainly Trance, yet currently venturing into a hybrid of trance and house dubbed as “trouse”.

Where You Might Have Heard Him:

Most likely, everywhere people dance to his music. He tours the world in support of his two albums as well as headlining international events. His first breakthrough single, “Till the Sky Falls Down”, became an instant international hit. It came out in 2007, just a year after Sutorius came into collaboration with his pals Eelke Kalberg and Sebastiaan Molijn on the 2006 Dash Berlin project. Famous trance artist Armin Van Buuren liked it so much that he included the song in his Universal Religion compilation album. And from there and then the world of Dash Berlin was turned upside down –or more appropriately, he turned the world dance scene upside down.

www.beatmag.com

Why See Him:

Dash Berlin is currently number eight on DJ Magazine’s World’s Top DJ Poll, that’s why. He has also won many accolades for his mixing skill. After producing his first single, Dash Berlin was signed by Armin Van Buuren’s label, Armada. His popularity gained major boost as he was exposed to a wider audience throughout the world. Since then he has churned out more international dance favorites in: Man on the Run, Waiting (feat. Emma Hewitt), Disarm Yourself (feat. Emma Hewitt), and Better Half of Me (feat. Jonathan Mendelsohn), just to name a few. Many who may have not seen him performs before may rest assured that his live set is as good as –if not better than-- how he sounds on his albums. (Note: Adora is the new name of Blue Eyes in Sanur)

hings got a little crazy at Poco Loco for the Grandmaster Flash show. The Mexican restaurant is trying to reinvent itself as a venue where one can partake in booze and party the night away and so far, it’s working out real well. Stevie G opened the show with Sayerr G-Funk taking over and playing some very classy old school hip hop before the Grandmaster himself took the stage. The three stories of Poco Loco were packed and when Flash took the reins, the place just about exploded in dance. The veteran DJ played a very pop-ish set which greatly departed from his old school roots and the crowd loved it. Hats off to the organizers who set up multiple bars that ensured no one ever had to wait for a drink; because there’s nothing more annoying than waiting for fuel while trying to party.

ponsored by Bali Moon, Tequila Bar on Jl. Pantai Kuta held a show which presented percussion performances and a didgeridoo player, belly dancers, and a DJ who played music all night long. The show started at 7pm and the guests were right loving the fun low beats.

eing the first one to perform in a line-up of 50top-Indonesian-DJs, DJ Riri didn’t hold back on his energetic brand of music last Saturday night at Boshe. He effortlessly sent the fully packed auditorium rocking nonstop to the beat. Local club goers, who made up the majority of the audience, were seen rubbing shoulders with a growing number of foreign visitors to the club. And at the end of the show, Riri’s loyal followers were left wanting for more.

he four piece rock band from the US, Vertical Horizon took to the Hard Rock Café stage in Kuta last night. In an intimate but rocking performance, Matt Scannell (vocals/guitar), Steve Fekete (guitars), Ron LaVella (drums), and newcomer Cedric Lemoyne (bass), held the not large but respectable crowd spellbound for about an hour and a half. The solid American rock style went down well in the hallowed grounds of HRC and why wouldn’t it? Scannell has some of the best rock vocals you could ever hope to hear and the technicians nailed the sound down perfectly. It was a crisp, clear sound and Scannell got to work some aural magic in the spaces created by the guitar based band. Classic moments were their big hits, “The Best I Ever Had”, “All is Said and Done”, “Everything You Want”, “Forever” and a couple of tracks off their new album, Burning The Days.

F

lamboyant and charismatic, Robi, supported by his band, Navicula, is one of a few pioneers of green activism among Indonesian musicians. Long before eco-protest songs became trendy, this hot-blooded Balinese guy had sung his heart out about socio-environmental issues. After more than a decade making (intelligent) grunge music, he is giving his voice further amplification by co-founding an organization which focuses on urban farming, named Akarumput. He is also a media consultant for various organizations and has just started another music project, a duo called Ganjil.

How did you start getting involved in music? Since I was 13 years old I’ve been a music enthusiast and a “serious” worshipper of the music industry. Then, when I first saw Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” on TV, that was the moment I decided I wanted to be in a band. I started seriously studying guitar and tried writing my own songs. I actually became a geek, crazy about alternative rock, I studied their spirit and lived their attitude. I tried combining metal, punk and visual art. My first band was formed by me and my girlfriend in my first year of highschool. We broke up, so the band broke up. In my second year of high school (1996) me and Dankie started hanging out at practice studio in Denpasar, then we decided to form a band that we named Navicula. At that time while working on the band concept and writing our own songs, we used to play any gig we could find. This helped us get experience and improved our skills. In time, we wrote a lot of songs, and started recording some, on cassette. We worked with a few different drummers,

Have Navicula always been a grunge band, right from the start? Yes, maybe because those were the bands we listened to as teenagers, bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains. But we are into all genres of music: metal, hardcore, punk, progressive, blues, psychedelic, funk, pop, disco, traditional, world music, where it works we like to mix up the genres in our songs, but grunge tends to be the strongest spice. All of the Navicula members have different styles they are into, for example Made listens to a lot of hardcore and funk, Dankie likes blues, Gembull is a super talented gamelan player, he comes from a family of traditional Balinese musicians who have been passing on gamelan skills from generation to generation. I myself am more focused on combining activism and music, it’s more about the message, mixed with punk attitude and a DIY perspective. Do you think grunge will have its second heyday here in Indonesia? When you look at the industry and trends, music has so many similarities with fashion. They both have their retro moments. Grunge is coming back right now, people are interested in the style of music that was booming in the 90s, with some modifications to adapt to peoples tastes today. Talking about fashion, just look around at how trending flannel is right now. Almost every famous brand has had flannel in their display window since last year. Social networks and the internet have made gigs easier to organize, and grunge lovers from all over are sharing information and getting involved. The new hype right now in Indonesia is a plan to put on a collaborative national grunge festival called “Rockotor Fest”. Navicula have always been concerned about environmental issues since day one, do you think your eco-protest songs have been effective? Our musical concept has always been strongly influenced by grunge. But since it’s my job to create the song concepts and lyrics, and this is the topic I’m interested in. It has to do a lot with

my activities outside of music which are related to social and environmental issues, I work with NGOs and community based movements, so I am often very close to these issues, and they become themes in Navicula’s music. I believe the public has the right and the responsibility to be informed, to understand, and contribute to the current environmental and social issues we are facing. And music is a cool media to get the message across. I use Navicula as a way to spread the word, the music is the media. This concept has led to Navicula collaborating with a number of social/environmental organizations such as LIPI (Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia), IDEP, AIFDR and Greenpeace to socialize their campaigns about disaster awareness, organic farming and deforestation. Recently we worked together with Sawit Watch, Walhi, COP and Green the Movie to promote orangutan awareness through a song and video campaign which was released on Akarumput.com. Is any of it effective? We get a lot of response from our fan base about these issues. We know this may not bring a significant change, in fact most social efforts don't, but you have to start somewhere. The world is this f--ked up, we all need to be involved in making it a better place. We are musicians, so we use music to do this. How do you find the music industry in Bali and Indonesia right now? Do you still have hope? Right now the music industry in Indonesia, since the transition from physical albums to digital, is still looking for a new shape. But I’m sure whatever format music comes in, we will still be playing music. Everyone in Navicula is playing music because we love it, becoming rich and famous one day would just be a side-effect of playing music. With or without money we love to listen to and make music. Music is like a religion to us, because most of our time and money is spent there. Navicula are working on new album right? Yes, we are in the studio finishing our seventh full-length album. We’ve recorded 12 new songs, but maybe only 10 will make it onto the album. The concept of the overall sound is something new, but of course we are making sure that Navicula’s character and feeling is still there. The lyrics are still focused on ecology, but the new songs are more direct and to the point, with a stronger, clearer focus than before. Any last nagging words? Remember to take the time, get off Facebook and Twitter every once in a while, and just plant something in the ground—it’s where true inspiration can be found.

but in '98, there was this reggae drummer and gamelan player named Gembull who we had our eye on. I was on vocals and guitar, Dankie played bass, and we both were at the same school as Gembull, so he ended up joining our band. The three of us released Navicula’s first album in '98 titled Self Portrait. In 2002, while working on our second album, Made joined our band on bass so Dankie started playing lead guitar. Since then our band formation has stayed the same, we are now working on our seventh full-length studio album.

Viva Cabaña

S.B. So tell us the essentials. S.R. My name is Skye Russell and I’m 31 years old. I come from Sydney, Australia, but spent most of my life growing up in Indonesia, and the last three years in Bali. S.B. When you say Indonesia, specifically where? S.R. I went to school in Jakarta and Bandung. My father is in business development and corporate events and my mother is a teacher at the Bandung International School. I moved to Bandung for primary school and then to Jakarta where I graduated from JIS.

S.B. You’ve been in Bali three years, were you coming to Bali before that? S.R. Yes, my whole life I’ve been visiting Bali. When I decided to live in Indonesia permanently, Bali was where I wanted to place my roots. S.B. So you’re a natural to do the club thing here? S.R When I first moved here I worked at Ocean Beach Club in Kuta, and when that closed, due to the site being developed, I moved to Sky Garden as operations manager. Sky Garden is owned by the same people. S.B. Skye to Sky, pilot to co-pilot (laughter). S.R. Yes, everyone asked me if I owned the place! After a while I wanted to move out of the Kuta scene. After Sky Garden, the Cuban concept was always on the cards. While we were looking for the right location, I took a job at Harry Juku and through the process of building that into a popular ex-pat hangout I was fortunate enough to make contact with the Jakarta Comedy club and bring their international acts to Bali. I resigned from Harry Juku to start working on Cubana when we found the space. S.B. Now your own thing, Cubana. Why the Cuban theme? S.R. There’s four of us involved who have been working with investors. We wanted to bring a strong concept to Bali, something that stands out and is recognizable. When you think of Cuba in the 1940s and 50s before Castro, the decadent days, Americans flying in, anything goes, the festive music, the vibrant colours, authentic style, exotic cocktails, fine rich cigars; it was something iconic that we thought people could identify with and a refreshing change for Bali. We are also the first place in Bali doing avant garde molecular cocktails which adds a modern twist. S.B. Same with the music concept? S.R. Yes, but we only started doing the live music for

a couple of days a week, but it’s become so popular and now we have it four nights a week. Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, along with our show dancers, salsa classes and hosts. Our music coordinator has spent a lot of time in South America. He’s a percussionist, and has a passion to create original sounds, true to the Cuban legacy. Also in regard to the dancers, we flew in a woman from Cuba who has a dance company in Jakarta to train the girls. It’s authenticity all around. Learning Cuban dance, Salsa, not Los Angeles Salsa nor any other type, the concept here is authentic Cuba, decadent and chic, taking in the diners and the preand after- dinner bar crowd where I think there was a gap for this on Bali. S.B. That’s a brilliant undertaking, but it appears that you will be offering other events as well, such as Manabu Ontake, the world class champion bartender you had last week. How did that come about? S.R. He’s actually working with Diageo, which is a large alcohol distribution company. They were looking to do an event for their promotional branding and chose us. People say our cocktails are the best and are known to be full, authentic and well presented. So based on this we qualified as a very suitable venue for Manabu Ontake to present his award winning cocktails. S.B. What are the future plans for Cubana? S.R. We have only recently opened and the response is great, but we want to fine tune Cubana before we consider other locations. But it is a possibility. S.B. So this is the flagship? S.R. Yes. S.B Entertainment wise, will you be extending on the Latin scene with international name acts? S.R. Yes, we have a whole entertainment plan that we intend to start rolling out this year, which includes bringing in international acts. S.B. So by next year, La Cucaracha, big time, (laughter), what is your philosophy? S.R. Work hard, play hard! That’s Cuban style! S.B.OH yeah, Cha, cha, cha.

www.beatmag.com

S.B. So relatively speaking, club events and so on are second hand nature to you? S.R, Yes, I’ve always been involved in business with my dad, helping running his events and golf tournaments.

Celebrating Unbroken Spirit

was an auspicious Saturday in Bali last week. The full moon was coming later that night and Balinese everywhere in the island were rejoicing its power in their monthly full moon ritual. Around the same time there was a different kind of celebration in Banjar Tengah Kawan in the Tampak Siring hinterland. A group of people gathered at the Senang Hati Center at mid afternoon to celebrate the foundation’s 9th anniversary. And what a celebration it was. Just minutes after the party started at 3.30pm guests were already clapping and cheering for groups of elementary students performing the traditional Balinese welcome dance and the Wira Yudha warrior dance. The party atmosphere went up a notch when an ensemble of the foundation’s wheelchair-bound students rocked the venue with their rhythmic drumming. By this point guests were already dancing and singing along the spirited beat. They were also invited to sing Happy Birthday with Ibu Putu Suriati, the co-founder and chairwoman of Senang Hati Foundation. After an auction of several of Ms. Suriati’s paintings, the celebration was closed with music from Paul Guy, the resident DJ at Karma Beach at Batu Belig who is also a volunteer at the foundation. According to Ibu Suriati, every year since 2003, they’ve always had a good reason to celebrate. For nine years the foundation has been striving to bring people with physical challenges out from isolation by building their self esteem through numerous educational programs. Each year, Ibu Putu and all of Senang Hati foundation’s staff members, who are all handicapped individuals, move an inch closer to their objectives with the help of many supporters who share their cause. This year, besides having gone through another 12 months of struggle and achievement, they are looking to embark on a new plan to acquire and build a new home for all the residents of Senang Hati’s boarding house among others. Currently the management and trainer at Senang Hati foundation have to make do with three rooms to accommodate their 30 students. The new year-long plan is expected to raise money to build enough rooms so that a more convenient arrangement can be achieved. The building expansion plan, and others that would help the foundation’s capacity to empower more disabled students around Bali, was launched last Saturday amidst their 9th anniversary celebration. Approximately 2.5 billion Rupiah is needed to realize their dream within a year. It is a daunting task that would serve as a turning point for the organization which is coming into its 10th year of service. But with years of perseverance behind them and friendship from many, the plan is just another reason to celebrate life at the Senang Hati Foundation.

ailing from the mean streets of Kuta, DJ Daniel Suwenda has had a passion for the decks since a very a young age and has a sweet studio in his Kuta home. Daniel opens up to The Beat on his take on this new “Dutch” phenomenon.

Okay, tell us a bit about yourself.

I’m Balinese and Australian, born and bred in Bali. Bodyboarding is my other passion and hobby other than DJing and producing. I’m also a part of the Pemuda Banjar Tegal Kuta and sometimes I’m a pecalang and go on patrol for Nyepi. These days I patrol Kuta every 13 days and take pictures of drunken tourists... It’s fun. I have been Djing for 12 years and just got into producing in the last two years or so. I’ve been DJing all over Bali and Java now and the best place ever in Bali to party was Nyang Nyang. I’ve spun there like seven times and I can never forget the experiences that I had there. It was epic and spiritual at the same time.

What do you think of the state of dance music in Indonesia today?

The state of EDM (electronic dance music) in Indo is in a changing phase I think. In Jakarta, you are now seeing a lot more different headliners spinning various styles from house to techno and trance. Compared to what it was five to six years ago, music is changing globally and drastically. There’s the commercial music scene and there’s the underground music scene but they’re both kind of next

What about this “Dutch: music?

Dutch house is pretty much Chuckie, Afrojack, etc… Their sound is very particular in its own way, it’s got some ghetto hip hop aspects and is diverse at the same time, they cover pretty much every corner (in the house genre realm) but with its own attitude, it’s a great sound.

I thought you said it sucked?

It doesn’t suck; I just think the way it’s presented in the music scene in Indonesia right now is kind of being over killed with this noise that sounds a little bit too repetitive. I think a musical performance should be an emotional, innovative and artistic thing, but if you only play the same beat the whole night, don’t you think it’s going to make people tired?

How would you describe your music?

Progressive house, electro, techno that has massive build ups and drops that are melodic and driving.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve seen in a club?

A man and woman fighting over a man.

Highlight of your DJ career?

DJing for Queen’s Day in Amsterdam in 2011 by the Kizersgract outside my friend’s store by the canal, the same year I spun in Sri Lanka for 5000 people.

Rock bottom of your DJ career?

When my laptop didn’t work for one gig at Boshe, it was for Chinese New Year. I love Boshe, I think its Bali’s biggest and best sounding club.

What’s behind you right now?

My studio.

to each other and especially in Ibiza. If one night it’s the Cocoon night (techno) and Cream (trance) is on the next night at the same club, you will definitely get different people and scenes. Whereas in Indonesia, I’m a bit confused with why the demand for EDM is just only one specific sound? It leaves a lot of other good music in various different genres out of the picture. This has been going on for years where there is a wave of hype only on particular beats and sounds that everyone references as proper EDM. Again this has made a lot of other genres underdeveloped and suppresses the ability for people to find their own scene and identity to explore and enjoy.

hristina Iskandar started the Diva lunches with a group of 8 women at Biku, as a way to get a small group of friends together to celebrate life and friendship and to raise money for special causes. In the following months the group grew and the last Diva lunch attracted 65 women and raised millions for causes supported by women in the community. Always colourful and fun, the casual get togethers have become a major force for social networking, making friends and patronizing Bali businesses. “ We have raised funds for my own favourite charity, YPAC, a handicapped children’s home in Jimbaran, for programs in the children’s prison and we have fun and celebrate each other. There are so many fabulous women in Bali, some have businesses, others are taking care of their families, the Divas come together to promote a sense of community and to celebrate being women – strong creative and so much fun,” says Christina.

The last Diva event was held at Cocoon and the butterfly theme sparked many of the women to create some fantastic hats and outfits. Prizes for best dressed were donated by W, Indigo and Rose and Indigo Kids. “This is fabulous fun and we have surprised ourselves at how much we can achieve together,” she told the beat.

The story of a divorced woman who travels to Bali and meets a dark, handsome Brazilian man has left not only single women of a certain age with the impression that romance lurks behind every palm tree but has also set off a mini revolution among the local community of Brazilians. Recent research, a small study mind, reveals that men of every nationality, but particularly those South American types, have noticed that single women carrying copies of the book are sending out strong signals that they are available and interested.

This phenomenon continues as more single women are inspired and ignited by the idea of a jungle romance. Once upon a time women came to Bali in search of Kuta Cowboys to light up their vacation, and some stayed and married them. This it seems is the updated version for our times. In Eat, Pray Love, the character isn’t looking for love, merely enlightenment, however as the story goes she gets more than she has bargained for. The whole leave me alone approach has always been attractive. Merely carrying a book around and yet remaining aloof does send mixed signals however the charm of the switched on Latino cannot be underestimated.

“My friends and I are on the look out, if we see a woman who is reading a copy of the book we know that she is looking for love. It is very good to go and talk to these women, we can speak with an accent and they are very happy to meet us, says one local Brazilian surfer.

Whether in the market for a serious long term relationship, or simply a holiday romance, girls be aware, a copy of this book is considered a sign that passion is in your vocabulary and you are happy to entertain candidates for your own Bali experience.

Surprisingly the more burly of the Balinese are also catching the wave, so to speak, and have realized that the Eat, Pray Love women are open for romance, it takes a lot of the hit and miss out of the whole dating game. Rebuffs are on the decline.

I wonder if the author had any idea how many people she would please beyond readers of the book?

Lunchtime is a casual event, with the cool air conned family-friendly restaurant buzzing with welcoming wait staff a nice respite from the midday beach heat. I meet up with a good mate who’s keen to sample some of the HRC goodness, and we immediately get chatting over a signature hurricane (109k++) from the ‘keepers’ section of the drink menu, and a wild berry smoothie (109k++) from the ‘alternative rock’ list. All drinks come in a special souvenir glass, which for just a little extra coin you can take home with you when you’re done.

Dessert-wise we split a portion of the home made hot fudge brownies (99k++) that are all the things a good brownie should be – warm and gooey on the inside, a little crispy on the outside, and most importantly, doused in creamy HaagenDazs ice cream. Amazeballs.

A massive sharing plate of HRC’s famous nachos (119k++) opens play for the day – the crunchy imported corn chips completely smothered in home made pico de gallo, jalapenos, ranch beans and sour cream. Highly recommended.

Don’t forget to use your BCA credit card if you have one, as every time you swipe at HRC you could be in with a chance of winning two allexpenses paid tickets to the Hard Rock Calling concert in London this 13-15 July.

On to the mains and it’s a tough choice but we eventually order up the hickory-smoked bbq Dan Ashcroft pork ribs (259k++) and the legendary burger (169k++). Ordinarily 10oz of imported Aussie beef with crispy bacon and cheese in a fresh burger bun would be impossible to beat, but when it’s up against an 800gm rack of slow roasted pork ribs it starts to get pretty difficult to choose a favourite…

Jack White Blunderbuss

Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder

Poor old Jack White. A cursory listen to brand new solo album Blunderbuss would suggest that he hasn’t been having a very good time lately in the romance department. Recently divorced from partner of six years, Karen Elston and no longer gracing stages with sister/ex wife Meg White (depending on which tabloid you’ve been reading), it’s understandable that he may be feeling a tad miffed with the fairer sex. However, if it’s a string of soppy breakup ballads you’re expecting, think again, as Blunderbuss bashes us about the head with love in its most destructive, inequitable form. “I want love to roll me over slowly / stick a knife inside me / and twist it all around” he sneers on Love Interruption, clearly still smarting from the breakup. All of this should be taken with a pinch of salt though, as the erstwhile White Stripe, occasional Raconteur and country duet aficionado is well known for flinging around a bit of artistic license in the name of blues “authenticity”. “I’m Bo Diddly” he boasts on the rockabilly I’m Shakin’ - tongue stuck firmly in cheek to make sure no one takes him too seriously. It’s also worth noting that Elston sings backup on a couple of the tracks, so I suspect things aren’t all that bad for our Jack. Musically, Blunderbuss will slide in perfectly between The White Stripes’ DIY garage blues and the Raconteurs’ indie swagger on your record shelf - White’s caterwauling screech powering along tracks like Missing Pieces and the most White-Stripesy track on the album Sixteen Saltines. By track four though he really hits his stride, with Love Interruption, Blunderbuss and Hypocritical Kiss providing a glorious suite of country blues, all washed in sweeping Nashville piano and pared down acoustic guitar. While no great departure from the kind of music we’ve all come to expect from this inimitable musician, Blunderbuss succeeds in being a fantastically inventive ode to broken-hearted blues for those who just don’t do soppy. around Bali, Lombok, and Java. 10-year-old Joniati “Cinta” Hansel is the newest member of the Surfer Girl team and is very excited, saying, “I’m so happy to be a Surfer Girl team rider! It’s nice to be surfing together with my friend Taina (Izquiredo) on the same team, and to be able to join in competitions together.” Cinta, the daughter of surfboard shaper Bruce Hansel, has set some big goals for herself; the first is to surf at Padang-Padang (Bali’s most legendary and dangerous wave), and second is to become world champion! The oldest girl on the team is 14 year old Salini Rengganis, who lives in the seaside town of Pacitan in East Java, a predominately Muslim community where it is rarity to find girls or women surfing or active in any water related sports. Salini has already competed in numerous surfing events dating back to 2006, when she joined her first local “Hidden Point” surf competition. Her favorite motto is “Seek the fellowship of at least one new person each day, regardless of that persons social status.” The rest of the team is made up of Panini “Pua” Johnson (13) and her sister Kailani who lives in Nusa Dua, (10), Dhea Dhani (11) from Kuta, and Taina Izquiredo (10) who lives just above PadangPadang on the Bukit. Surfer Girl Announces Their 2012 Team Riders!

The Madames, The Superheroes, and The Vampire

By: @JohanJT

The title of this edition’s movie preview might sound random when thrown together. Well that’s because they are. The upper crust of Parisian society is swayed by a master manipulator, an unlikely band of superheroes must fight aliens with strength and wit, and a vampire emerges from the grave to protect his family. Sounds like random fun, which one is right for you, read on.

Bel Ami Drama. Directors: Declan Donnellan, Nick Ormerod. Writers: Rachel Bennette. Cast: Robert Pattinson, Uma Thurman, Kristin Scott Thomas, Christina Ricci, Colm Meaney. Bel Ami tells the chronicles of a poor young former soldier, Georges Duroy (Robert Pattinson), in Paris during the 1890’s.Using his wits and powers of seduction and manipulation of the city’s most influential and wealthy women, he rises to opulence. Based on the provocative 19th century author Guy de Maupassant’s novel, this film is full of sensual drama, conflict in the bourgeois society of Paris and pretty faces, both the male and female. Careful not to seduce the stranger sitting beside you in the cinema!

The Avengers Action, Adventure. Director: Joss Whedon. Writer: Zak Penn. Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Rufallo, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson. Having been one of the most anticipated films this year, “The Avengers” is said to be one of the most spectacular superhero action-fantasy movies ever. With a cool cast playing legendary superheroes like Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk, Captain America, Hawkeye and the Black Widow, you wouldn’t expect any less than a fun fairground ride-shiny, noisy and exhilarating. Worry not if you think it might be dull, because writers Whedon and Penn will serve you just the right dose of comedy through witty dialogues. Dress as your favorite avenger hero and fly over to the IMAX theatre in XXI Gandaria City, Jakarta if you’re a diehard fan.

Dark Shadows Comedy, Horror. Director: Tim Burton. Writers: Seth Grahame-Smith, John August. Cast: Johnny Depp, Eva Green, Michelle Pfeiffer, Chloe G. Moretz, Helena Bonham Carter. Breaking the heart of a witch, a rich and powerful playboy, Barnabas Collins (Johnny Depp, Pirates of Carribean) was doomed to a fate worse than death-turning into a vampire and being buried alive. Two centuries later, he is set free and returns to his ancestral home where his dysfunctional descendants are in need of his protection. With the dark-style of renowned director Tim Burton exercising a family-drama comedy into a vampire-themed movie, you can at least bet your popcorn that this is a film worth your two hours in the cinema!

Breadmaker This breadmaker bakes golden-brown, flavorful artisanal bread and was the easiest to use. The Best Breadmaker baked white, wheat, and cinnamon raisin loaves with moist, airy interiors and crisp crusts, unlike other units that produced dry loaves with barely browned exteriors. The Best Breadmaker automatically incorporates dried fruit, nuts, or herbs at the proper time, unlike other models that require the user to manually add additional ingredients. Scoring highest for features, The Best model has a backlit LCD control panel that allows users to quickly select a light, medium, or dark brown crust, the size of the loaf (1 to 2 1/2-lbs) and the type of bread. The Best model automatically kneads the dough, allows it to rise, “punches” it down, and bakes it to the preferred settings. www. hammacher.com $249.95

o you like theatre shows? If you do, there is a venue in the center of Kuta that presents a spectacular daily (except Wednesday) show. In Early 2008, when a five-star hotel and resort leased 70 acres of Gusti Atmaja’s inherited land, his life changed upside down. Not only did Gusti abandon his culture, he also hurt the feelings of his best friend, Ni Ulantari. With a strong belief in her Gods, Ulantari prayed for Gusti. Then, the god Shiva finally answers her prayers and sends the Legong dance down to Earth to make a miracle. Discover the miracle in this magical show with an admission fee of USD 10 per person. ith more than ten years of painting under his belt, Ketut Permana has an opportunity to exhibit his own works. The concept of “Rupa Rupa Raga” (various forms) summarizes his work and is the theme of his solo exhibition debut. A man who adores the masterpieces of Antonio Blanco, WG Hofker, and Le Mayeur, he has found an appropriate style that extenuates his art. He exposes humanity in its almost nude form that’s conveyed both in mood and gesture. The exhibition will be held at Warung Yaya, Jl. Sekar Waru no. 4 Banjar Belanjong, Sanur, Bali. Tel: 270 335.

This relatively new Spa is on the second floor of the Kuta Station Hotel in Kartika Plaza. The first impression is of your basic hotel spas with white tiles and traditional Bali paintings. But the pleasant but efficient reception staff in the open entrance area gives you the feeling that there is more here than meets the eye. Once inside the clean modern spa room with its ikat print covers, deep bath and large shower sets everything right

www.beatmag.com

Feel:

The treatment starts off a delightfully relaxing foot bath by a competent but gentle therapist. Next step is a Balinese massage which reminds one of the goldilocks story when she visited the bear’s cottage and tested the beds – not too hard, not too soft – just right. Following the soothing massage, comes a body scrub with sea salt. The coarse salt on the oiled body is a gentle awakening. Feeling alive you are treated to a warm shower in a generously sized shower room, followed by a yogurt body mask. Ice cold yogurt further tightens up your pores and then you are given five minutes for the mask to do its work. A final wash under the shower before an exotic lime ginger tea.

Ingredients:

Traditional Balinese oils are used and the sea salt is also a local product.

Magic:

Greeted by a choo choo train doesn’t promote the feeling that pampering is in the mix however, it is possible to produce an amazingly good spa treatment in a rather basic place. It is the feeling of being taken away from the hustle and bustle of Kuta into a centre of old Bali with the delightful therapists and simple but expert treatment. After the 90 minute treatment you feel completely rejuvenated and refreshed.

Glow In the Dark Party

R

ed Square berubah menjadi kehijauan saat digelarnya acara berjudul Glow in the Dark Party pada hari rabu malam.

Red Square had a greenish glow appropriately called Glow in the Dark last Wednesday. Sponsored by Absolute Vodka, the show presented a Laser Man who wore a reflective costume that directed green laser beams like a giant disco ball. There were also the Sexy Glow Dancers which looked like characters out of Tron. The art decoration of Kobar made the usually Red Square kind off green and it was stormsome.

lub Voyeur kembali menampilkan bintang kelas internasional dalam program unggulannya yaitu In Space.

Under a theme of ‘One World Together’, the first day featured a fashion show with a collection from Boppa and was modeled by Aida Nurmala, DJ Devina, Kimmy, Chitra Nartomo along with a few others. On the second day, tthe dress code was white and DJ Zbrx from Stadium provided the tunes.
