One can only wonder about the long term effect of the 3am closing rule for bars on the Kuta and Seminyak nightlife areas that was brought into force a couple of months ago by local authorities. While some bars and clubs appear to be staying open till later, others, and particularly in Kuta, are all shut tight at the designated hour meaning that they are missing a large percentage of their cream. When people talk of the neighbours and their desire for sleep, a quick look at the history of the place would reveal that the only reason Kuta is popular is the beaches, shopping and nightlife. When I first came to Bali over 32 years ago, Kuta was basically a coconut grove with scattered houses and a few losmen scattered about. Local people generally weren’t interested in living in Kuta and the value of the land was low because send name/address to: rice couldn’t be grown on the arid soil, or so the story goes. So the subscribe@beatmag.com tourists, the beaches and the nightlife made Kuta the bustling place it and we’ll send you payment details. is today. The nightlife mayhem is contained within a couple of square Want to be on the beatlist and get kilometers and while many may not want to partake in the down town uptodate info via email. madness, there are thousands of tourists that come here every year Send an email to to let their hair down and enjoy the fast paced lifestyle available in beatupdate@beatmag.com that glittering little world. We’d hate to see that change. There aren’t many places like Kuta around the planet and, love it or hate it, our Kuta is a special place. Sure, the bars and clubs have to keep the noise down and sure, soundproofing could go a long way in helping, but the question remains, who is actually complaining? The neighbours? Didn’t Get the beat delivered they already know what Kuta was like before they moved in and don’t direct to your door most of them work in the bars, restaurants and shops? Well, don’t they also realize that if the nightlife goes down even further there’s a 12 months (26 issues) Rp. 200.000 high chance that there won’t be the same number of tourists arriving 6 months (13 issues) Rp. 100.000 here anymore? And what then happens to the plethora of shops, postage included in Bali and Jakarta. restaurants, businesses and jobs in this town? There may be a lot more ‘for rent’ signs in shop windows than product. So, it’s now high noon at the proverbial OK Corral of the Kuta nightlife. While some bars appear The Beat Magazine Bali to be able to stay open till all hours outside of Kuta, others in the down @thebeatmagazine town are being held to ransom by the very same people, from top to bottom, who actually all depend on the tourist dollar. nick warren mint | thursday 14 June Our in house music specialist, DJ Nate, has a very enthusiastic word with the legendary Nick Warren.

www.beatmag.com

N: I’m a massive fan of the remix you did of ‘Naive’ by Tom Glass. Very dark, different stuff from you. Do you find nowadays that you get more time in the studio, do you desire exploring more different sounds and having fun with remixes and original productions? NW: Thanks very much I am glad you like it. I must admit I do enjoy my role as a remixer and feel no pressure to deliver poptastic style dance music so I just follow my instincts, the same with my solo productions. Any producers, labels, or other up and coming DJs that you’re really grooving to these days? Anybody we should be looking out for?

h e r e n o w

054

I do not get to hear that many new DJ’s to be honest, but there are tons of amazing producers out there. Ryan Davis, Microtrauma, Of Norway, Sam Waller and many many more. How has 2012 been shaping up so far, and what do you hope to see happen this year? Anything different or new from previous years? It is another great year for dance music. On the one hand it is getting more and more commercial sounding while at the other end of the scale there is a lot of stunning underground productions and parties. Lots of old school house right now, but once that fad has passed things will get groovy and melodic again! How do you and Jody dictate the differences in time which you’ll both spend on your solo careers, with time spent doing Way Out West material? We tend to work very separately most of the time and just come together every few years to start on the WOW material, the new album is underway and sounding strong. When you aren’t traveling or in the studio, what types of things does Mr. Nick Warren like to do at home? Three things I am passionate about , my partner Petra and daughter Esme whom I spend too much time away from. Cooking, which I love doing and of course my fly fishing which is a huge thing for me :) We all know you’re an extremely well travelled DJ and have witnessed the scene take all different shapes the world over. So, what can you say about it here in Asia? Do you feel like it has a lot of room to evolve? How does it compare to places like Europe and the US? Asia is still a growing market but really needs it’s own stars to take it to the next level.

www.beatmag.com

How about your experiences in Indonesia over the years? Any great stories or memories to share with us? I’ve had some wonderful times in Bali, my agent Robb’s wedding and the seafood restaurants in Jimbaran Bay. Can’t wait to be back! Lets say the world is going to end, unless you answer this next question…What if you had to

pick your top three cities to play in the world?! Buenos Aires, Cordoba, Mendoza and yes there does seem to be a thread going on there hahahaha. How about if you had to pick another fellow jockey to play alongside for fun? Would it be one of the ol’ GU guys or another big name DJ we know? Has to be Hernan Cattaneo, we play together a lot, he is a great friend and a brilliant DJ. There’s a Nick Warren App for iPhone and Android now! I think we can officially declare that you’ve made it as an international star, right? You have to move with the times and embrace all the new technology, the App, Facebook etc are all essential tools for the DJ these days. You’ve done so much with your career and had such a massive effect in the dance music scene on a global level. We were huge fans of all your Global Underground mixes, and you’ve spread fantastic music all across the planet. What are the things you’ve taken away from this and cherish most about your successful career? I cherish everyday, I am a very lucky boy and never take it for granted, see you soon in Bali.

timmy trumpet eikon | friday 15 June Roots:

Before he became Australia’s top DJ/instrumentalist Timmy Trumpet was Tim Smith and had extensive musical training as a youth in Australia. He studied at Sydney Conservatorium of Music where he enrolled in their access program, before eventually leaving in the ninth grade after setting off a fire alarm and consequently studied jazz music in public school. He wasn’t just a naughty kid, he showed promise and was named ‘Young Musician of the Year’ at the age of 13 and started performing live when he was 14.

Sounds:

Main room house

Where You Might Have Heard Him

Trumpet gained accolades for his work in Ministry of Sound Electro House Sessions 4 and Pacha albums Summer Anthems 2011 and Pacha 2010 that introduced the hit “Tromba Ye Ye Ye.” He has performed extensively in different parts of the world and claims to have lost count of how many world tours he has been on. He also has made a number of regular appearances on the hit Australian reality show The Stafford Brothers .

www.beatmag.com

Why See Him

You don’t hear the title ‘DJ and instrumentalist’ on an artist too often. In fact Timmy Trumpet can pride himself as only one of a few such musicians in the world. At the age of 28, he has supported and played with the likes of Armin Van Buuren, Carl Cox, Fedde Le Grand, Dizzee Rascal, Fat Boy Slim and the Stafford Brothers, not to mention being selected to support the legendary Stevie Wonder on his Australian tour in Sydney. The way he plays live trumpet solos over electronic dance music tracks during DJs shows is considered a step up in the art of EDM that has brought even wider international recognition to the former child prodigy.

KIM FAI klapa klab | saturday 16 June Roots:

Straight out of Tipton! Kim Fai is yet another DJ/producer/remixer coming from a long line of U.K. talent. With only about six years in the scene, he’s already made a serious name for himself. We didn’t have the easiest time digging up a background on Kim, but possibly that’s because he lets his music speak for him, being more interested in the here and now side of things. If so, his Soundcloud page, as well as his library of music on Beatport speaks volumes. Loaded with his own signature sound and showing off a wealth of range and natural ability, Kim proves his own musical roots surely run deep.

Sounds: House.

Where You Might Have Heard Him

www.beatmag.com

Fai covers a lot of ground. From big time remixes of mainstream artists like Lady Gaga, Snoop Dogg, Madonna, and LMFAO to staying well connected with his fellow underground house artists providing solid remixes of their material as well. A long string of successful remixing is only a fraction of Fai’s talent as he has continually produced unique, original material championed by many of the big time DJs headlining the biggest stages today. Outside the studio, Kim has seen massive success as a DJ as well. Playing alongside massive acts lik Deadmau5 (U.S. and U.K. tour), Swedish House Mafia, and Tiesto just to name a few.

Why See Him

Kim holds down a rather solid balance of studio time, always creating and working on new material, mixed with touring and playing out all over the world. He is constantly putting out a cutting edge sound that is always hot and up to date. His style is laced with a lot of energy, but still holds true technique and originality. Each year he surpasses the previous year’s success and is always breaking new ground and only getting bigger and better. It won’t be long until you see him as one of the bright names at the very top.

Naysayer & Gilsun (NGTV) Hu’u Bar | saturday 16 June Roots:

Not sure what type of marks these two talented Aussie boys got in school, but if one were to grade them on their knack for relevant pop culture from the last few decades, as well as a unique musical take and sharp skill with audio and video technology… let’s just say they more than pass. Coming from Melbourne, Australia, you might have a hard time pin pointing where NGTV hail from if you judged them merely by music. Seeing as how their fine art provides a fresh feel, they could very well be from anywhere and everywhere, all at the same time. Point? Luke Neher (Naysayer) and Sam Gill (Gilsun) may soon become global.

Sounds:

With audio and video mash ups crossing into all different sounds and genres, its safer to say these two create their own genre live with each show they play.

Where You Might Have Heard Them

Pyramid Rock Festival 2011, as well as appearances at multiple Falls Festivals, and a NYE Sandcastles Festival 2010 show. They’ve held down residencies and headlined shows all over Australia, with cities including Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide Geelong, Gold Coast, Bathurst, Ballarat, Byron Bay and Perth. Aside from huge success in the land down under, they’ve also rocked crowds in Brooklyn and Glasgow. You can take a sneak peak at these two on YouTube and get a feel for their musical craft, but it won’t paint much of a picture as to what you’d be in for to see them live!

www.beatmag.com

Why See Them

This is an act we are going to vouch for and strongly suggest you don’t miss. Why? Because they’re insanely creative. In a world where pop culture is often lacking true depth and substance, these guys have taken it all in, chopped it up, put it in a blender and are looking to serve it up in their own artistic fashion. Aside from that, it’s sure to be an experience overall. There aren’t a lot of acts out there who do their own video with audio and provide a well rounded show. Naysayer and Gilsun look to create a live experience you won’t forget and they’re out to make you remember more than just a night out.

Benny Lackner Trio Mannekepis | monday 18 June

Roots:

The Benny Lackner Trio is Benny Lackner on piano, Jerôme Regard on bass, and Matthieu Chazarenc on drums. The group was founded in New York City in 2002. Lackner was born in Germany and moved to California at the age of 13. He studied at the California Institute of the Arts under Charlie Haden, and Brad Mehldau who later influenced the trio along with the likes of Keith Jarrett, Ahmad Jamal, and Bill Evans. Lackner once explained that the trio’s direct intention is “…to follow the lineage of traditional piano trios as far back as the 1950’s.”, but he adds, “with a more modern sound that can be appreciated by the younger listener.”

Sounds: Nu Jazz

Where You Might Have Heard Him

The Benny Lackner Trio has done what a hard working jazz trio should do; perform live extensively throughout the world. They toured the USA, Germany, France, Croatia, South Africa, Austria, Turkey, Spain, Greece, Portugal, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. The trio headlined jazz clubs such as the Blue Note in NYC, Joe’s Pub in NYC, Smalls in NYC, Birdland in Vienna and the A-Trane in Berlin. They have also produced four critically acclaimed studio albums in Not The Same (2003), Sign of the Times (2004), Pilgrim (2007), and Cachuma (2012).

www.beatmag.com

Why See Him

Lackner, Regard and Chazarenc are far from being traditional about their music. They show a fresh, boundary-pushing approach to jazz through the inclusion of the right dose of electronic and drum programming. One of their strengths is in the selection of the right material to perform from a wide range of repertoire. Besides their own original material they would also perform killer interpretations of popular covers from artists such Bjork, Jimi Hendrix, Prince, and Nick Drake. The trio’s CD release tour would be one of their only two sets in Indonesia this time around. Considering this is the kind of jazz performance that wouldn’t pass this way too often we recommend you not miss this one.

sebastian drums woo BAR | saturday 23 June Roots:

Growing up in France, Mr Drums had a very young start in the road to DJ stardom. At age 11 he started a love affair with a certain sound we call EDM and was very influenced by the works of master artists such as Daft Punk, Cassius, Bob Sinclar, Thomas Bangalter and Antoine Clamaran. He later became a resident at Palas in the South of France and played with a list of huge acts like Axwell, Steve Angello, Benny Benassi and Little Louie Vega.

Sounds:

House, tribal, progressive

Where You Might Have Heard Him

www.beatmag.com

Sebastian Drums is most notably known for his collaboration with Avicii which produced the mega hit “My Feelings for You” which was the number one track on Beatport for an entire month. The track has been on the playlist for numerous A-list DJs such as David Guetta, Bob Sinclar, Laidback Luke, and Roger Sanchez. He also started his own label called Work Machine which has Thomas Gold, Mischa Daniels, Afrojack, Roman Salzger, Tristan Garner and many more on its roster. He spent a fair amount of 2011 as a traveling DJ going to France, Spain, Italy, UK, Sweden, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Australia, Brazil, Azerbaijan etc.

Why See Him

His star power seems to be on the rising side with constant collaborations with top notch acts such as Avicii and Swedish House Mafia. If these guys are playing his tracks, he’s got to be worth something right? Don’t take our word for it, check him out yourself at the W.

Norman Jay MBE rOCK BAR | saturday 23 June Roots:

Norman Jay showed a promising future as DJ very early in life. He was a dedicated student of his father’s extensive collection of music before being turned onto late 60’s African American sounds. Jay stayed on the path all the way through the 80s, where as an apprentice DJ in New York, he witnessed the birth of rap and hip-hop. Afterwards, a spell at legendary pirate radio station KISS crowned him as a main figure in the UK underground dance scene. Jay’s reputation grew even bigger in the 90’s when he helped introduce a new sound from Chicago and New York known as house music. He even DJed at the Queen’s Golden Jubilee where he was given the Order of the British Empire by recommendation of the queen herself.

Sounds:

Disco fueled funky house music with a nice dose of old skool jazz funk, hip hop or chilled out beats in the back.

Where You Might Have Heard Him

www.beatmag.com

During the 80’s Norman Jay was still busy doing clandestine work in UK’s underground dance music scene. But by late 90’s, he was already a legitimate musical icon and his work has been recognized by the mainstream media. Jay has appeared all over the world, DJing for world celebrities, performing at high profile events in the UK, and has received major exposure doing commercial projects for the likes of Virgin Airlines, Discovery Channel, Vodafone, Seagrams, and many more. He has also been the subject of a documentary film on his early years as pioneer DJ in UK, titled ‘Good Times – The Film’. We could go on and on about this guy’s achievements, but it would probably fill the entire Here Now section.

Why See Him

Norman Jay is deservedly dubbed as one of the most influential figures in club scene by top DJs and music magazines on a regular basis. He practically cultivated the dance and club culture in the UK. He continues to thrive in international stage with his distinctive style and sound. Now, if an iconic DJ who had performed for Mick Jagger, Will Smith, Prince, and Bruce Springsteen, to name a few, isn’t worth seeing, we don’t know what is.

aturday night looked like it might have been a quiet one, it was windy and some say even cold. But that wasn’t the case at Mint. he new Adora club on the Bypass in Sanur opened its doors last week with an event of massive proportions including one of the best DJ/Producers doing the world circuit by the name of Dash Berlin. The Dutch DJ showed how he became the number six DJ in the world with a classy mix of vocal house and trance that had the crowd begging for more. Nice new club, give it a try. (Editors note: Adora is in a separate building and has no connection with the former Blue Eyes.)

oco Loco was more than a little bit crazy when the a couple warriors of Stanton played there one Friday night. C Pen opened up the show and built up the beats and brought it back down again for the headlining Stanton Warriors. When the Warriors hit the decks, they started it off with some breaks which gave way to a more melodious sound and dove into drum and bass. By the end of their set, their beats were harder than Chuck Norris’ abs. The crowd seemed to love it and that’s why we tip our hats to Audio’Bot Studios.

M

www.beatmag.com

ike Pohorly is a Hollywood feature film assistant director born in Canada and an occasional Bali resident. He’s never been shy in moving and shaking to get things done and recently started a promotion campaign via Facebook to help kick start his latest project, a short-film he will shoot here called Meeting Made In Bali. The film is about a young Balinese man’s plight in returning home to his estranged village. Since this is a passion project for Mike, he is putting together the financing for the film using the phenomenon of crowdsourcing. The project has received a lot of interest over the past week and he has only three weeks left to achieve the production goal of 12,500 US dollars. People can support the film by making pledges in return for gifts on the website kickstarter.com

TB: Hi Mike, give our readers a short rundown of your experience in the world of film making so far. MP: Thanks for having me, I’ve been a big fan of The Beat for a long time. I began over ten years ago as a production assistant on a James Cameron TV Pilot with Jessica Alba called Dark Angel. It was the typical answering phones in the production office, photo-copying scripts and production schedules, making sure Jessica’s lunch order was correct, that kind of stuff. I then began training as an Assistant Director on sets, and moving up the ranks. As a third assistant director I was looking specifically after the cast, and as second, I ran the set with the first AD, or run a smaller unit. There have been many

highlights working with many great people. Liam Neeson is someone I worked with again recently on The Grey. When you’re shooting at minus 30 degrees, having an easy-going guy such as Liam around as one of your stars helps make the extremely challenging production days bearable.

MP: The production details in Bali will be worked out once the permits and fundraising are in place as Kickstarter is an “all or nothing” site, so we still don’t even know if we will hit our fundraising target and be able to make this movie. However, I’m sure that with your reader’s help it may get over the line.

TB: Now, tell me about your own project, where did the idea come from?

As for the crew, on a movie like the A-Team we ran two units with a few hundred people. This project will be a little under 20, but by utilizing an amazing new camera being provided by The Bali Film Studio (The Red Epic which The Hobbit was shot on) it’s going to look like a high budget feature film and will be able to show off the unique diversity and beauty of the Balinese people and culture.

MP: Bali itself is such a fascinating place, a real collision of cultures, and I wanted to share that beauty with the world. I’d been writing a script where an American guy in his 20’s comes to the island in search of his father when I happened to mention it to a long-time friend here, Melinda Ang, and right away she said it sounded exactly like the real life story of Ezra Mitchell who now lives in Bali. I met Ezra and when he told me his story I was blown away. I ended up basing this script much closer to his story, but as seen through the eyes of a young Balinese driver to be able to add some twists. Ezra has since become a friend and is the good-looking one who leads off my promo/teaser video on the Kickstarter site. TB: What is Kickstarter? MP: Kickstarter.com is the crowdsourcing website we’re using to fund the Meeting Made in Bali’s production. This is my first time using the site and it’s nice to see support coming in from all over the world. It’s been a fabulous opportunity to connect with people. I have contributed to other friend’s projects before, and volunteered many a weekend in helping other people’s independent projects get made, so it actually feels a bit strange now to be asking directly for support from others, but it’s been a truly amazing experience so far. TB: What has the response been like so far? MP: So far it has been fantastic, we’ve received over $7,000 in contributions in the first 10 days of fundraising and there’s a real buzz about the piece with 1800 Facebook “likes”. Even people who donate $5 are a part of the project and can share in the experience of making movies. TB: Where will it be shot and how many people will be involved?

TB: And once finished, where will it be distributed? MP: The Toronto Film Festival is high on my list as where I would like to see it and of course have it shown in Bali at the Balinale festival. I’ll also try for others like Sundance, Tribecca, Berlin, Singapore and the Tropfest in Australia. Ideally we will aim for about 25 film festivals worldwide and then look to get picked up for other distribution from there. If you can’t make it to these festivals, don’t worry the movie will be available to supporters before it goes anywhere. TB: What do you think will come from releasing this film? Who is it for? MP: We’re hoping to present Bali closer to reality than Eat, Pray, Love and highlight the choices facing this ancient beautiful culture has in an era of global modernization. The script itself focuses on the universal themes of family and forgiveness so we are hoping to have a fun, touching short film that anyone who loves Bali will be proud of that can be seen all over the world. TB: How do people get involved? MP: Please check out the project by searching for “Meeting Made in Bali” on Kickstarter.com or Google. Thanks so much.

Homegrown & Well Known:

KOMAN WAHYU SUTEJA

Interview by Rudolf Dethu

www.beatmag.com

RD: You come from a family of painting enthusiasts, but it seems like you are more focused on being a hotelier. Is your biggest passion the tourism business rather than art? K: I was born in one corner of Neka Art Gallery, in Jalan Raya Ubud. In fact, what we called a gallery was a shop house or ruko. My mother said I was born at home because the labour was very short and there was no time to get to the hospital. The Neka Art Gallery was founded before I was born, so as far as I recall, paintings and painters were always around me. Most of Ubud’s traditional Balinese painters in the 1970s were working in the studio that was provided by the gallery. I also was fortunate to meet a lot of Indonesian master artists like Affandi, who came to visit my parents almost every month; Hendra Gunawan, who was invited by my father to live in Bali after he was released from jail, and many other artists like Donald Friend, Rudolf Bonnet, Theo Meier, Arie Smit and more—I think I met all of the artists whose works are in the collection of Neka Art Museum. Same as other teenagers, I was rebellious and avoided doing what my parents had been doing. I went away to Jakarta to study business and continued to venture around the

US and then came back to Indonesia (Yogya and Bandung) to work with an American company, and only came back to Bali 10 years later. My parents asked me to come back to Bali to start my apprenticeship, to take over my parents duties in the community (temple, banjar, and other traditional Balinese Hindu duties). In 1997 I opened Komaneka Fine Art Gallery. Maybe in the back of my subconscious, art was always there so I felt very confident and comfortable opening a gallery. But of course I built an art gallery that was different from my parents. The building, the display, the marketing and especially the artists featured are completely different. My gallery is only displaying art that represents my era. So, mostly young and new artists. It was a very interesting part of my career because I have seen (and continue to see) the rise and fall of some very talented young artists. In fact some of the top Indonesian contemporary artists today had their first commercial exhibition here at Komaneka Fine Art Gallery. The hotel business started in 1998. At the back of Komaneka Fine Art Gallery where there was empty land. In the beginning we thought we would have some bungalows and a working studio for our artists (as an artist residency).

I explained that to the artists and started accommodating them in bungalows around Ubud, but being young, when we gave them a good place to stay and work, it backfired. They stopped working. Haha. They were too young and needed more challenge. So we decided to change the concept into a place for collectors to stay and it became popular. In 2001 we opened our second hotel due to popular demand. We opened more hotels in 2008 and 2011 and plan more in the year to come. Art is still my passion. Hotels can run by themselves once you set up a system then multiply, while art needs full-time attention. Dealing with artist is always a challenge. They come from a different world. I always joke that they come from another planet. At the moment, I’m not as active as before because my time is occupied by many community works. From temples, to running a school and not to mention the four kids I have. Now I can only work with more mature artists who need less baby sitting. I am still active, however, and have art exhibitions in my gallery and also sometimes in Hong Kong or Singapore. I have also started using wall spaces around the hotel as a place to display my art collection. So you will see “real” art displayed in our hotel lobby, restaurant or in the rooms. For example, one of Masriadi’s paintings was hung in the gym in one of the hotels. I had to move it to a more secure place because now the value is close to 500,000 US dollars. RD: How many hotels do you own now? Interested in expanding to other areas in Bali/ Indonesia? You own a Koman Hotel in Japan, truth or rumor? K: We have four hotels now. All of them are located in Ubud. Maybe because we are a bit lazy and don’t want to be too far away from our home. Now that the management is already settled, we are planning to open outside of the Ubud area. We don’t have a hotel in Japan, but in 2005 and 2007, we co-designed two luxury apartment complexes in Biwako Lake outside Kyoto. The theme and the amenities are inspired by Komaneka.

www.beatmag.com

RD: Some say the quality of the tourists coming to Bali is degenerating and the government doesn’t give enough support by providing proper infrastructure. What’s your opinion? K: All development, if you don’t plan it well, with integrated systems, will have problems. It is good for Bali to have more tourists, but as always there are two sides. One side is that economic acceleration is helping Bali to achieve prosperity. The other side, or challenge, is that we must find a balance, so that social and cultural traditions can be maintained. To attract

the “right” kind of tourists is always a challenge. Government, as the permitting authority for development of tourist infrastructure, must have a clear goal. Attracting the wrong tourists can be disastrous. Bali is a unique place. People come to Bali because of its distinctive culture and environment. Not because it is affordable (at least, not as the first reason for their visit). So by allowing the development of cheap and “pigeon like” hotel accommodation, Bali has become a cheap tourist place. This will only create quantity instead of quality. The economic value is less, but increased tourism creates more traffic jams, more garbage, more sewage, more use of water and energy. Allowing these kinds of hotels to be built and to operate will also kill the traditional home stays and hotels that are owned and run by locals. Capitalism, in the hands of the authorities, must be controlled. Sounds like we need to start a Bali Spring, hehehe... RD: Now let’s get personal, name three of your favourite records of all time and why? K: I love a wide range of music. From classical to jazz to hard rock to alternative. From Tchaikovsky to Jaco Pastorius to Led Zeppelin. I love Jaco Pastorius since I played bass in my jazz group when I was in high school. The different sounds that he can create from a single instrument will convince you that anything is possible if you use your creativity. RD: Also, three of your favourite books and why? K: I’m not a book reader. I read magazines more. I feel more relaxed, not too deeply engaged in a single topic. I enjoy any kind of magazine. Architectural Digest, National Geographic, Condé Nast Traveler are among my favorites. Well, actually, I do like one book that I have read over and over. The one by Stephen Hawking, The Brief History of Time. This book has made my problems disappear. After reading it, if I have a problem, it seems insignificant, because I realize that as a human being, I’m only a small, tiny part of the whole universe. So any problem is only a small thing that our mind exaggerates into something big. Our problems will not change the balance of the universe, so try to solve it and accept the result. RD: Any last nagging words? K: Art must be viewed from an artistic point of view or otherwise it will be misinterpreted. I don’t understand when people start controlling the freedom of creativity that an artist is entitled to. Don’t forget they are not politicians. They are creatures from another planet. Art should enrich our everyday lives.

Keen to present a decent medley of dishes from the menu, chef William organizes a tasting menu for us to make sure we get a proper feel for what the Evo experience is all about, and it’s not long before we’re tucking into a star studded lineup of no less than seven courses – each one pared down a touch from the normal portion available a la carte.

Dipped in a creamy sauce the Italian style stuffed doughnuts are incredibly morish, and are a great example of the approachable Evo fare that William has created. After a brief interlude to freshen up the palate with a nice Chianti, we plough right on into the two main dishes, namely fresh fish of the day (market price) which in this case is seared tuna chunks on risotto, and the super tender lamb cotoletta (180k+), all the while a nice selection of reds flowing freely to compliment the dishes. Foals

Total Life Forever

Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder

Ok

cards on the table here, I have to admit that I’m going into this one a little biased, being potentially the world’s biggest fan of Foals’ astonishing 2008 debut Antidotes. If you do not own this album then I’d suggest downloading it immediately before we proceed. I’m serious, do it now. NOW. Ok good, let’s get on with it. On Total Life Forever lead singer Yannis Philippakis continues his endearing trick of sounding simultaneously cocky yet withdrawn, despite a few perturbing moments (like opener “Blue Blood”) when he sounds dangerously like one of the Fleet Foxes. The twiddly, trebly, semi-muted staccato riffs remain intact also, as does the inventive disco drumming from Jack Bevan, who trips so effortlessly from primal scream pounding to delicate tinkering you’d think he had seven arms. In true Antidotes style each track on TLF tends to unfold like a video of someone pulling apart an origami swan watched on fast reverse - each seemingly conventional intro repeatedly imploding into something utterly different and beautiful. A full four minutes of weightless anticipation goes by before “Spanish Sahara” winds up and spills its guts - you get the impression that in the hands of anyone else, it (and “After Glow”) would be pretentious and dreary, but somehow Foals molds them thoughtfully into works of imminent fascination. Never has such a chaotic clutter sounded so well thought out and deliberate, like a magician who pretends that his trick has gone wrong before wowing the crowd by pulling a dove out of his derriere. So far, so good, but where’s the ‘but’ you’d be right to enquire? The answer, oddly, lies in the album’s more instant accessibility. The beauty of Antidotes was that it rewarded the repeat listener, taking longer to ‘click’ and therefore cementing its longevity. Whereas Antidotes was a grower, TLF is a lot more welcoming right off the bat, and so runs the risk of falling out of favour all the more rapidly. Let’s hope I’m proven wrong. Dan Ashcroft

In the tightly contested 30-minute final, it was the Coca-Cola ISC and ASC Tour Manager Micheala Partin from the USA who narrowly defeated Malaysia’s Brenda Lee, just edging her out by a mere half a point, ending the final with a score of 14.00 to 13.95 (out of a possible 20). Lee had scored the final’s highest single wave score of 7.5 with her first wave, but then struggled to come up with up with the 6.60 wave score that she needed to best Partin’s combination of a 6.9 and a 7.1.

Partin was nothing if not ecstatic with her victory, saying, “This is my first contest win ever, so I’m so happy! To be able to surf in such a perfect wave like Macaronis and to have such a great crew of girls to compete with, it’s truly the best experience ever. I surf at Uluwatu in Bali a lot and I think that is what gave me the advantage here. “Recalling the last few minutes of the final she said. “It was fun and all but it was still a competition, so I was really worried near the end because I knew that Brenda and I were so close and she had already scored some good waves. I was so nervous and then so relieved when there were no more sets in that last minute!” Open Division Results 1st – Lee Wilson (Australia/Indonesia) Rp. 15,000,000 (approx. $1,600 USD) 2nd – Garut Widiarta (Indonesia) Rp. 8,000,000 (approx. $850 USD) Equal 3rd – Raditya Rondi (Indonesia)/Pepen Hendrik Indonesia) Rp 4,500,000 (approx. $480 USD) Women’s Division Results 1st – Michaela Partin (USA) Rp 5,000,000 (approx. $550 USD) 2nd – Brenda Lee (Malaysia) Rp 3,000,000 (approx. $325 USD) 3rd – Annissa Flynn (Thailand) Rp 1,500,000 (approx. $160 USD) 4th – Yasnyiar “Bonne” Gea (Indonesia) Rp 500,000 (approx. $55 USD)

Choose Your Enemy: Convicts, Aliens or Evil Queen? By: @JohanJT

It might be boring to see typical villains who get beaten up by typical heroes in movies, right? Well, these antagonists should be applauded as they stand up against the heroes in style. A group of psychopath convicts in spaceship, some never-been-seen aliens from the past, and a pretty yet jealous evil queen are waiting for you at the cinema or your local DVD shop.

Lockout Action, Sci-Fi, Thriller. Writers & Directors: James Mather, Stephen St. Leger. Cast: Guy Pearce, Maggie Grace, Lennie James, Vincent Regan, Joseph Gilgun, Peter Stormare. Set in the near future in 2046, an ex-government agent, Snow (Guy Pearce) is falsely convicted of espionage against the U.S government. In exchange for his freedom, he must undertake a dangerous mission to rescue the president’s daughter from rioting psycho criminals at an outer space maximum-security prison, MS1. With Luc Besson’s story, expect this film to be like any other of his previous highly stylized action-packed movies, only this time, you get a bit sci-fi to blend in for ambiance. You’ll love and hate Guy Pearce’s character here as the lead. Prepare your oxygen with a bucket of popcorns because we’re heading for outer space!

Men in Black III Action, Comedy, Sci-Fi. Director: Barry Sonnenfield. Writers: Etan Cohen, David Koepp, Jeff Nathanson. Cast: Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin, Emma Thompson. In the history of Hollywood’s action sci-fi movies history, probably Men in Black has stuck in more people’s memory than any. Who could forget the crazy stunts and jokes by duo agent J (Will Smith) and agent K (Tommy Lee Jones and Josh Brolin). Exactly one decade since the first sequel, director Sonnenfield is bringing back a fresh Men in Black with some alien law enforcing and cooler gadgets on the screen. Suit up in black, put on your coolest sunglasses... and be careful because the freakishly tall person in front of you in the cinema might just be an alien in disguise!

Snow White and the Huntsman Action, Adventure, Fantasy. Director: Rupert Sanders. Writers: Evan Daugherty, John Lee Hancock, Hossein Amini. Cast: Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron. In this dark and twisted rendition of a famous fairy tale, Snow White isn’t just the fairest woman in the kingdom, but a tough princess who’s been mentored by a huntsman who was ordered to kill her. With her beauty and martial art skills, she’s in a quest to vanquish the evil Queen Ravenna’s reign. As one of the most anticipated movies this year, expect nothing less than amazing cinematography with an adrenaline punch from its colossal battle and fantasy romance. Don’t pick the poisonous apple, unsheathe your dagger!

Relating to that term, Gaya Art Space organized a group exhibition titled “Ekumene” that exhibits the artist’s awareness in creating their artworks based on inhabiting. oe Mintardja is a painter hailing from Java but now lives in Ubud. He is one who prefers to capture the viewers with images of African and Asian faces, both primitive and tribal figures in warm colors. He was born in a small village near Surabaya in 1972. His artistic talent appeared when he was still a child and he thought that he had to keep this talent and therefore decided to study arts at the Senior High School of Fine Arts in Yogyakarta and finally graduated at PRISMA ASRI and ISI. As a figurative artist, Joe is absolutely not interested in beauty but entirely in human characters and charisma in his subjects.

Through these different portraits, he has finally found a different dimension that appears as a soul, a story, and even a life story. Joe Mintardja has also been actively exhibiting his works all over Indonesia at galleries, museums, and hotel galleries. And this time, he is currently having an exhibition called “Black and White” that runs through June 30 at Café des Artistes, Ubud. Come and see his unique art while having a cup of coffee. Maria Rajon Simonova

Renaissance Woman

www.beatmag.com

S.B. First stroke if you will. M.S. I’m Maria Simonova, from Moscow, age 26, married one year with a boy three and a half years old. S.B. What kind of painting background do you have? M.S. My grandmother was a famous artist during the time of the revolution, so it’s in my family bloodline. As a child I always loved all art and I was doing sculpture, paintings, and glass, whatever, and as a teenager I went to theater school, became an actor, then studied psychology of creativity in university, graduated at 21, then did a master’s degree. From that I would work with actors in theater school on different projects. S.B. Does the creativity apply only for actors? M.S. No, anything, it’s psychology of the art, how it’s applied, how it’s going, what’s going on,

a r t

to reach what’s going on inside, the feelings. At that time I was doing my own art work parallel to university, and then I went to music school and became a classical pianist, this past year I got into jazz.

S.B. A real renaissance woman. M.S. It was always my pleasure and hobby, my father always encouraged me, he was a photographer and he would take me into the developing room, which was a big inspiration for me. I would take his camera and take pictures

S.B. So this is your first exhibition at J.P.’s Warung? M.S. Yes, great that it happened in Bali. S.B. How would you describe your art work? M.S. Realistic, life, I was inspired by the color of light and color, the soul, but this exhibition which has been for the past year, was made all in ink and done with bamboo sticks. I stopped painting with oils when I had my baby and my colorful paintings, which there are a lot of, are in France.

S.B. When did you start painting as a career? M.S. Actually it was always a hobby for me, but my husband encouraged me to get serious and he made me a believer. My first painting was on the beach and being surrounded by children who were watching me; my husband comes along and says, wow, you’re Vincent Van Gogh (Laughter). I applied my portfolio to Beaux Arts de Paris and they sent me a letter to Bali, saying they were ready to take my paintings in January, but I was pregnant and I couldn’t do it. After, I took a course in summer school in Paris at Beaux Arts de Paris and in Florence as well. When I left Moscow, which was five years ago I started my journey to India, extremely inspired there, so much color, I started doing drawings and sketches, after seven months I met my future husband and we decided to move around the world, and when we came to Bali, we felt something special and decided we wanted to stay here. That was three years ago, and we got married one year ago.

S.B. Do you have future plans to further your career? M.S. I would love to go to South America, sort of a magnet for me on the map of the world; the colors, the music, the culture.

S.B. Where was your first exhibition? M.S. I have works in some galleries in France and Moscow and private sales, but never an exhibition because we were moving all the time.

The exhibition opened last week at JPs Warung in Seminyak and runs for one month.

S.B. Your philosophy? M.S. I’m loving this life, everyday something is opening for me and giving me ideas, books to write and poetry. Everyday is life and death and you cannot really plan for your life, you never know. So for me, it’s to enjoy the moment. S.B. Your thoughts for other artists? M.S. Every artist has their own way, their own vision. Just to looking at yourself is the best you can do and when you see yourself, you’re open. I think painting is the most difficult profession in the world for me, because it’s so intimate, you cannot hide anything. So my thoughts are to have honest feelings.

Ideas, images, concepts are different avenues that are all part of a bigger picture for Bradford Carrie, and through these different mediums, as one critic said, “We can see through his world what imagination can truly create.” You will have the opportunity to view Bradford’s latest works at an exhibition held for three days at Canggu Club from June 14.

a r t

To his credit and praise, Bradford Carrie’s surrealist attitude has been compared to the

likes of Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso, equally major influences, and has set the tone as a recurring theme throughout his career. The realization of the senses of the mind through dreams, thoughts, feelings, and time are just a product of his environment. Drawing on influences from culturally renowned art history subjects to full on Japanese animation, Bradford is what some might consider a contemporary and conceptual outlet in his own right. With combinations of impressive showings and a well-respected following, Bradford made the move to Bali, Indonesia where he has been residing since 2004. Buyers and interested parties from Japan to Denmark to Australia have only spread the word of Bradford Carrie even further globally and he continues to push the boundaries with his original leatherwork accessories, high-end villa interior design, and wearable jewellery masterpieces as he draws inspiration from the “Island of the Gods”.

The Bradford Carrie exhibition opening will be held on Thursday, June 14 from 12 noon to 8pm and the show runs for three days until June 16. Canggu Club Bali: JL Pantai Berawa, Banjar Tegal Gundu, Canggu. Tel. 844 6385 www.bradfordcarrie.com

orn and bred in Vancouver, Bradford’s artistic path was well on its way after becoming a veteran in the local art community and creating and exhibiting his own creations since 1991. This brought him to the Emily Carr University of Art & Design in 1993 where this institution of higher learning instilled in him a gateway towards expressionism. From there it was like a tree extending its branches into every realm… acrylics on canvas, goldsmith design, leatherwork inventions, and even delving into the world of the film and music industry where his work in art director departments put him in touch with such luminaries as John Travolta and Sarah McLaughlin, both fans and owners of Bradford’s artwork. His gifted ability to convey his contemporary expressionism with a surrealist influence also meant he could dabble in some of his own personal endeavours like functional and non-functional sculpture, interior design, and fashion design styling.

Spa Venus A Feast of Tempting Indulgences.

It may be small but Spa Venus has a lot going for it. Look

A mix of Scandinavian sensibility and French boudoir, the first thing that strikes you at Spa Venus is the heavenly smell. Dali-esque armchairs scattered through the compact lobby swallow you up as you begin your spa journey with a cup of iced rosella tea. In addition to light and airy treatment rooms, the spa also features an infra-red sauna, said to be the ultimate detox.

www.beatmag.com

Feel

From the basic Balinese massage carried out by thoroughly professional and confident therapists to more exotic treatments like the hot stone massage, there is a sense of ceremony in Spa Venus treatment. Special treatments include a blind massage, a heavenly acupressure massage by Nyoman who has been blind since birth. Deep healing treatments include Cranio Sacral Therapy, Soul Retrieval and advanced energy clearing.

Ingredients

A range of in-house oils and potions, which smell heavenly, are complimented by a top skincare range from Shankara. An emphasis on natural products underlies the holistic slant on spa treatments.

Magic

From divine flower petal baths to fragrant oils and leading skin care products Spa Venus is a treat for the senses in every respect. From the aromatherapy oils to the delicate tea to the serious and professional approach to treatments, there is a pervading sense of peace and tranquility here. Villa Kubu Jl. L

ast week The Beat celebrated 12 years in Indonesia by holding a Beat Party at Red Square Jakarta. It has been quite a while since The Beat put on a show and that night in Senayan proved that with a little help from our friends, a party in Jakarta on a Thursday night can still rock. DJs James Sullivan and Milinka provided the tunes accompanied by The Beat Dancers up on the table. Thanks go out to our dear sponsors – De Kuyper cocktails, Watershed wines, Heineken beer and Absolut vodka which made for quite a potent mix. The next Beat Party will be back in Kuta, Bali in early July. Proceeds of the event went the MLM Charity and Rumah Peka.

e discovered last week it’s not a bad idea to arrive early to X2 for the big show. Stationed at our corner of the dance floor, stand-up table was the ideal place to be as the place packed out by the time the main act arrived right at midnight. So packed in fact it was a struggle to get to the wash room. He’s not a real tall dude our Dash but he definitely makes up for it in great trance music, and he’s not afraid of getting up on the decks and showing us his iPad. Very innovative stuff. After a solid three hours of class trance that had the house bouncing, Dash pulled out his last and probably sweetest track in collaboration with Emma Hewitt, “Waiting”. With almost 13 million hits on Youtube, the popularity of that track can’t be denied. Totally stormsome!
