It’s
a mad rush now to Ramadan, which this year begins on July 20, and means that all Muslim people throughout the world have a month to cut loose before retiring for a month of self-refection and definitely no partying. That means over the next month or so the local Indonesian crowd will be out looking for a good time and will be here in Bali in droves. There’s plenty coming up over the next weeks and especially right before Ramadan begins, including a beat party, which we haven’t seen in these parts for a while. More about that in the next edition. This time of year brings the weather, the crowds and the parties. This year has also brought the Euro Cup which has been keeping crowds up late and glued to the TV, which will continue over the next week or so. Just this weekend on Friday night The Beat Thiefs are back at Sky Garden, DJ Delizious Devina is at Adora, Sebastien Drums at W, Yasmin Le Bon at Eikon, Kid Mac at ViAiPi, Mulan Jameela at Akasaka and a host more. Then Saturday DJ Norman Jay graces the decks at The Rock Bar, Remy Kersten at Klapa and Riri Mestika gets back to Boshe. There are loads of other things on around too over this weekend and over the next two weeks. Just check in the Whats On and HereNow sections for the juice. We had the sad news of Ivan Sumarauw (Conge) passing away last week in Jakarta. He hadn’t been in Bali for a couple of years but was a focal point of the Bali night life for many years before that and was well loved by the local party crowd over the Bali Golden Years. He was one of the most photographed people in the first years of the beat magazine and wound up on the cover of the sixth edition. He will be well remembered for his party organizing, hosting and fashion shows in the heyday years of Double Six Club and beyond and he will surely be missed by many. Condolences to his family and friends from all of us at the beat magazine. Rest in peace.

Beach BBQ Party Some of the most stunning beaches in Kuta lie in the twokilometer stretch between Pererenan and Pantai Berawa. But just like anywhere else, this once pristine beach needs a little help. To get things going River to River, a local organization spearheading a clean-up project on the Pererenan to Pantai Berawa stretch, will throw a beach party that guarantees good times, great music and awesome food on June 29 from 5pm to 9pm in front of Hotel Tugu. Proceeds from the event will go to River to River to finance their clean up project. For more info and updates check the Facebook page for River to River.

Plans underway for new highway The Ministry of Public Works is currently looking into plans to construct a new highway linking Gilimanuk in Bali’s far west with capital city Denpasar. It is hoped that the motorway toll road will speed up access from Denpasar to the west and on into Java. “Construction of the highway linking Gilimanuk and Denpasar is still undergoing the study and planning process. Its construction will be done gradually,” stated Deputy Minister of Public Works, Dr. Ahmad Hermanto Dardak in Sanur yesterday. According to Hermanto, the construction of a faster route linking Gilimanuk and Denpasar is in order to modernize the road network infrastructure in Bali. “With this highway, the travel time between Gilimanuk, Denpasar, and Padangbai will be shorter,” he added. In addition to the new highway construction Gilimanuk-Denpasar, the Ministry of Public Works continues to upgrade the road networks around Denpasar and Badung. “We want the city to reflect a proper metropolitan area. With the improvement of road infrastructure, we expect to be able to make Bali increasingly attractive in the future,” added Hermanto. [From the TBD]

The Biznet Bali International Triathlon is all set to commence on Sunday June 24 in Jimbaran Bay. Like all triathlons, the event will be a test of human endurance and will feature swimming, cycling, and running though Jimbaran, Kedonganan, and Nusa Dua. There will be two divisions, an Olympic distance triathlon which will feature a 1.5 kilometer swim followed by a 40 kilometer bicycle ride, and a 10 kilometer run. The second division, called a sprint triathlon will see athletes doing 500 meters of swimming, 20 kilometers on a bike, and a 5 kilometer run. For those that are a little less hardcore, the event will also feature a 5 kilometer run and a kid’s fun run on the same day. Organizers expect over 800 participants from 24 countries to compete in the event including previous Iron Man winners.

On June 12 South Kuta beach took a step closer to become a safe and eco-friendly destination with the re-introduction of the All Fun Under the Sun program at Discovery Kartika Plaza hotel. The program which was originally launched in 2008 by a group of prominent businesses in the area, the South Kuta Beach Business Association, got a new boost with the admission of 61 new bicycles from the program’s sponsors to replace the fleet of shuttle buses in the neighborhood. Guests of the association’s member hotels can now take advantage of the new bikes to go around the area in a greener and healthier way.

Where You Might Have Heard Him
Kersten’s French sound has landed him residencies in big time clubs such as Hong Kong’s Dragon I, Whiskey Mist in London, Gotha Club in Cannes, and Zurich’s ever so famous Saint Germain. Influenced by such acts as Daft Punk, Martin Solveig, Sven Vath, Axwell, Louie Vega, and many more; Remy has seen that musical influence land him shows in top spots like Barcelona, Shanghai, London, Bangkok, Stockholm, Tokyo, New York and the list of successes goes on.
www.beatmag.com
Why See Him
Obviously a well travelled performer and in high demand globally, Remy Kersten has something unique to his DJing style, and that is that he is desired and sought after for specific and high profile events that seem to require a special style and flare for the dance floor and its party goers. Dean Cherny WOO Bar | thursday 28 June
Roots:
Coming from Melbourne, Australia Dean Cherry has been in the business of selecting songs that make people want to dance and be happy for 18 years.
Sounds:
Electro, house
Where You Might Have Heard Him
Cherny has been around the block and when he isn’t DJing for 20,000 people at events like Summadayze, he can be seen at smaller high profile events like the Myer Marquee at the Melbourne Cup Carnival, the Melbourne Fashion Festival, Kylie Minogue’s album launch and John Farnham’s 50th birthday. He was also chosen by George Michael to support his 2010 Australian tour. He’s even played with little known acts and no names like Frankie Knuckles, Jeremy Healy, DJ Sneak, Boy George, Deep Dish and Basement Jaxx. If you’re into shopping, you might have heard his mixes at the over 2,500 fashion retailers that his Marketing Melodies brand has exclusive programming rights in. He is also featured in a number of compilations including Redhead: A Decade of Dance, the Large CD, Sticky Flavours and two volumes of Circulate: The Best Club Tracks Going Round.
www.beatmag.com
Why See Him
Any DJ handpicked by the likes of George Michael has got to be worth his salt and we expect nothing less from Cherny. He seems to fit in just about every niche one can fill as a DJ with celebrity birthday parties, festivals, fashion events, concerts, and production of numerous tracks. Get down to W to check it out for yourself.

Chris Kaeser SKY GARDEN | saturday 30 June Roots:
Chris Kaeser’s musical influence started back home in France where he was born. His parents are musicians so it comes as no surprise that Kaeser got interested in music at a very early age. His path to stardom began with his first composition in 1988 followed by his first record in 1991 co-produced with Antoine Clamaran and his nephew David Kaeser. It has been work, work, and more work for Kaeser ever since then.
Sounds:
Dance/Electro
www.beatmag.com
Where You Might Have Heard Him
In 00’s Kaeser has been mixing at clubs in Hollywood, Poland, Stockholm, Oslo, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Moscow, Miami, Agadir, Ukraine, and Israel. But he seemed destined to go even farther when his hit single ‘Rhythm of the Beat’ was released in 2009. It reached number one on Beatport’s overall chart in a little over a month. He was immediately back at the top with another hit, “Who’s in the House” which again reached number one, this time on the DJ Buzz chart, and stayed in the top 40 on the Yacast chart for more than 15 weeks. Since then he’s been a regular presence at European music charts and many of his tunes enjoyed heavy rotation on radio stations. Kaeser also got the chance to work with some ginormous names in dance music like Bob Sinclair on “New New New”, Sidney Samson on “Let’s Go”, and The Phonkers on “Rock Your Body”. He was also one of the artists responsible for the big 2010 summer anthem “What We Gonna Do” along with Max’C which featured Anita Kelsey and Fast Eddie.
Why See Him
Chris Kaeser might as well put “conquering music charts” as his favorite past time. He has received more international music recognition than we care to memorize. If you too can’t keep up with Kaeser’s musical achievement this is the time to catch the man performing his hit tunes live.

sandhy sandoro adora club | saturday 30 June Roots:
Sandhy Sondoro grew up in a Jakarta household where American pop, folk, jazz and blues tunes reigned. His parents were the tireless conveyors of pop music that shaped his musical direction. Instead of traditional Indonesian music, Sondoro is more adept in singing and playing western pop songs. His undying passion for music was carried over to Germany where he studied architecture. After graduation, however, he opted to make his living by performing as Sondoro at bars, clubs, and in the Berlin metro. Over time Sondoro moved up to performing at famous theaters such as Berlin’s House of World Cultures and Bode Museum Isle Festival with a growing number of fans in German cities like Hamburg, Cologne, and Stuttgart to name a few.
Sounds:
Soul, RnB
Where You Might Have Heard Him
Why See Him
Sandhy Sondoro is one of the best singer-songwriters the country has ever produced. Prior to Sondoro’s quick rise to fame in his home country, Sondoro strove to obtain recognition from fellow musicians and European audiences for his talent and the quality of his vocals. Many in Europe have likened Sondoro to soul legends like Curtis Mayfield and the great Marvin Gaye.
www.beatmag.com
Sandhy practically broke out from the streets of Berlin in 2007 when he entered a singing competition on a German TV show called Prosieben. His performance impressed the judges who were looking for new talents from all over the country. He followed that appearance with his first album in 2009 titled Why Don’t We which boosted his reputation even further. Sondoro was far from satisfied with his achievements though. He entered another competition in 2009 which gave him a wider international exposure. His latest international single called “Shine” with Ibiza DJ Dublex Inc. is currently gaining airplay and stayed on the top tier of music charts in Berlin, Austria, Madrid, and Paris.

YASMIN LE BON hu’U BAR | FRIday 06 JuLY Roots:
An extremely talented Dutch-Indonesian female DJ/producer, based in Amsterdam, Yasmin began her disc jockeying career in world of hip hop and R&B before making the switch over to house music around four years ago. Much more than just a stunning beauty behind the decks, her music is sure proof of her talent and knack for quality EDM material. The past year has seen her do some serious work in the studio, releasing 16 different tracks on the infamous Sneakerz Muzik label to which she is the first female producer ever signed. We reckon rightly so, after hearing a fresh and groove laced approach to her music on Soundcloud. While she calls Amsterdam home, YouTube hosts an array of videos which see her showing off her DJ skills all over the world.
Sounds:
Groovy house, tech house, progressive.
Where You Might Have Heard HER
Yasmin has touched down on plenty of continents and has an even busier touring schedule in the very near future. Having already played legendary hot spots like Ministry of Sound, Pacha, and The Rebel Club; she was also the first ever Dutch DJ to play one of Italy’s biggest clubs, Area Venezia. Aside from big time gigs which have seen her play alongside greats like Sebastian Ingrosso, Laidback Luke, and Erick Morillo; she’s also broken into the top 10 charts with productions such as “Get Your Music On” and “Undercover Romance”. One of her newer tracks “Lost in a Fairytale” shows she has a great emotional range that she can reach with her music.
www.beatmag.com
Why See HER
Whether it be a heavy cliche these days in Indonesia or many other places as well, there’s seemingly no shortage of female DJs riding the waves of their good looks, whilst having questionable skills behind the decks. Yasmin Le Bon is the exact opposite and if anything, one who can champion the case that girls can do it just as good as the boys and looks are just an added bonus. She is a well rounded talent, with her own signature sound on the stage, as well truly solid productions in the studio. The shows and gigs she already has booked ahead, span the entire map and show she’s in high demand and soon to be a star.

ROUND TABLE KNIGHTs SOS SUPPER CLUB | FRIday 06 JuLY
Roots:
Contrary to popular folklore, the Round Table Knights are not from the land of King Arthur, they are from Switzerland. It might also be worth noting that they are called the Round Table Knights as to not be confused with the Knights of the Round Table, because those guys are the stuff of legend and nowhere in the legend do they actually play any music. Now that we’ve cleared that up, these DJing knights started off as turntableists over a decade ago and evolved into the world of electro.
Sounds:
Disco house and psychedelic
Where You Might Have Heard OF THEM
These guys have reached Beatport’s much vaunted number one spot and show no signs of slowing down. You may have heard their Coma Cat remix which was voted the Essential Tune of 2010 by Pete Tong himself. They’ve also played for huge crowds at some of the most reputable venues and festivals out their including Panorama Bar, Sonar, Igloofest, and Creamfields. In 2011, the Knights were given the Swiss Nightlife Award for the Best Electronica DJs.
www.beatmag.com
Why See THEM
All evidence and research suggests that the Round Table Knights are the real deal and are likely to put on a great show. Their pedigree seems legit and their name suggests that perhaps this could be a quirky fun set worth a night out.

On top of that, the World Ocean Day celebration at Cocoon was also meant to raise funds by the sale of raffle tickets to win cool prizes from sponsors and an auction. The event as a celebration of nature succeeded in raising our awareness of our oceans.

Ethan White (keyboards, vocals), John Christian Urich (lead vocals, drums), and Jordan Scannella (bass, vocals) put out a performance that will remain in their fans’ memory for a long time. Arguably it was one the best shows by an international pop band that took place at Boshe.

Homegrown & Well Known:
TIN T IN Interview by Rudolf Dethu
t home, not that many people know who she really is. The few who do, don't really know much. But outside of Bali, nationally and even internationally, especially in the context of contemporary installation art, she's a well-respected figure. Just read closely, be amazed, and thank me later.
A
www.beatmag.com
You spend more time overseas, and are rarely in Bali. What's the situation? Well, if you visualize Bali as the centre of the galaxy, some kind of a giant sun, I could be one of its planets, its "wandering star" (this is the literal translation of planets by the way hehe‌ Not that I'm not a star hehe...). No matter how I want to deny it, the fact is that I do orbit around Bali, and always try to stop over whenever I can. There was even this one occasion, when my late father was still alive, where I had only a one-
hour stopover in between flights at Ngurah Rai airport, and I used this opportunity to go for a quick priceless catch-up with my family in a cafÊ at the airport. Looking back, I realized that I practically started doing this orbiting when I finished high school (SMAN 1 Denpasar, 1991). In between my studies in Bandung (Architecture, Universitas Katolik Parahyangan) and Boston (Film Scoring, Berklee College of Music), I always tried to spend some time home, in Bali. But then the idea of 'home' for me changed a bit when I was 29 in 2001—the aspiration to be able to live somewhere else, to not be confined in Indonesia, was so strong... So I surveyed how I could live elsewhere legally, and to make a long story short, decided to apply for a permanent residency visa in Australia. When my Australian permanent residency visa
Choosing somewhere else for an even better career in art? Well, so far I don't really think my geographical base has anything to do with career advancement. I work internationally with people who work internationally as well. My current representing gallery is a Hong Kongbased gallery, whose director I've only met in person years after my first one-off project with them. And before that, I worked with a gallery in Europe. So far it doesn't seem that my geographical location factors into my career too much—except of course that it can contribute to longer-haul flights. But so far, I also don't always have to fly. When I can't install my work in person, for example, it's generally possible to send detailed instructions. This is not ideal of course, but solvable—and basically what I'm saying is, in choosing where to be based in, career is not really in my list of criteria. I like to keep active physically, I like to be able to walk and bike around safely, I like fresh air, good and healthy food, I like to feel free, I like to feel safe, I like being surrounded by positive people, I dislike being judged superficially, I hate bureaucracy and legalized discrimination (who doesn't?), I like to feel that I'm independent, that I can say what I need to say, wear what I want to wear, and decide on my own life—these
are my criteria. If it is possible for me to live like this in Bali one day, why not? As far as I know, you've never held an exhibition in Bali. How come? I'm not too good at pursuing people, so I tend to work with people who actively pursue me. I also tend to choose to work with public institutions as they're usually funded and that just takes a lot of headache out of the equation. When I have more active offers than the passively interested parties, I guess it's just natural that I would choose to go with something that's moving and progressing instead of the passive ones. The way I see it, my energy should really be more focused on doing my art, not on pursuing passive parties. I don't know whether this is the right approach, it's just what is possible and sensible for me to do at the moment. What do you think is the biggest achievement of your career? I think my biggest achievement so far is that I could find the possibilities to move on and keep progressing, and to keep learning in the process. And I couldn't have achieved this without a lot of serendipity and support from the kindest people that I've met along the way. Any last nagging words? Two words: thank you, for the opportunity for reflection. Oh wait—that was more than two.

was approved in 2003, however, my trajectory of projects was still mainly around Asia and Europe... No real reason to reside in Australia! It took me several years, and a lot of motivation, to finally make a move to live in Australia. To tell you briefly, after working for some time I felt the need to be able to reflect back on what I do more critically, and so I started thinking of doing a postgraduate study. It was obvious that this could be done somewhere in Australia to solve my residency problem as well hehe…, so in 2006 after some short surveys I decided to apply for a project-based research postgrad at the School of Art, RMIT University in Melbourne. In 2007 I was admitted with full support and stipend, and it was then that I could start to move my base to Melbourne... Although surprisingly I find myself still in the process now, five years later! Ah! Trust me, there is such a thing as too much traveling. I wasn't really aware of this in the past years, but now that I am, I'm taking a small step at a time to really get settled in Melbourne.

Bruno Paillard was on hand to present each one of his eponymous champagnes as well as tell a brief history of champagne and explain the complexity and the uniqueness of his vineyards. He said that his champagnes had a particular taste due to the grapes growing from soil that had previously been under the sea eons ago, which is made out of compacted shells. The only place you can find his champagne in Indonesia is at Tapping Shoes where extreme class and retro seem to collide effortlessly.

recent trip to Central Java proved once again that the roots of this diverse country are global in the extreme. In the first century the Hindus and the Buddhists of Central Java built their temples side by side, their legends intermingled and the community stood together. Empires rose and fell and amid more tumultuous times in Indonesian history where kingdoms directly influenced both culture and society, there was a a gradual exodus of Hindu elites to the island of Bali, the last Hindu stronghold in the archipelago. Today the temples of Borobudur and Prambanan, which were unearthed after some eight hundred years covered in ash, are one of the biggest attractions for domestic tourists of all types, as well as thousands of international visitors keen to see the Unesco sites in their restored state. Although Indonesia is the biggest Muslim country it is also considered the most liberal, and apart from a few right wing religious groups, this country is mostly built on respect for the differences among others.
in a unique way.
Which brings us back to Bali, which is a melting pot of cultures and makes room for most of them to live and follow their own culture. Affecting all those who make this their home is the Balinese approach to life, which blends culture and religion
Those who are new to Bali need to be able to blend their own culture with the ethos of the Balinese if they hope to make it long term. Some can and some can’t. Trying to impose your own standards on the Balinese is like fitting a square peg into a round hole and is sure to drive you mad. There are plenty of examples of those who have come to make a new home here and left with their head in their hands after a short stint. It simply doesn’t work. Simple things like moving house require a different mind-set in these parts. Building is quite a shock to some people who simply can’t understand how workmen could do heavy work while barefoot. In one of the leading hospitals on the island, surgeons regularly perform operations without shoes, it defies western logic, but that’s how they do it, like it or go elsewhere. That is not to say that western culture hasn’t made inroads here, technology is one area that many Balinese have embraced, although this appears to be more socio-economic than a change of heart. One is happiest in Bali if you simply go with the flow, like dancing you have to find the rhythm and surrender to it. Those that don’t, won’t last. To avoid long term mental health problems, when in Bali do as the Balinese do, like it, laugh about it but don’t fight it. Resistance is futile, there is something bigger at play here and trying to understand it and is a bit like trying to work out why your computer works. It does, that’s all you need to know. Sarah Dee

His hard work has seen him opening his own restaurant in Spain called El Collectionista or Cala for short, at the age of 23. Besides managing and being the executive chef at his restaurant, Rodriguez still finds the time to teach at a number of cooking schools, organizing food fairs, running a catering company, and appearing on TV shows. His culinary journey eventually took him to the tropical island of Bali’s Deja’ Vu Kitchen as its executive chef. Ok
that might not be strictly true, actually it roughly translates to ‘traditional Brazilian steak house’, which, as you can probably imagine is a place patronized almost exclusively by those of the carnivorous persuasion. According to the team behind Bossa Nova, the churrascaria is a common sight across South America, providing a place for people to meet up and socialize over lively banter, cool Latino music, good wine and of course a wedge or four of the finest meat possible. Various cuts of beef, chicken and pork are skewered and grilled to perfection, but these aren’t just any old bits of meat… These cuts are unique Brazilian style, specially imported from South America and grilled to perfection for the ultimate in carvery joy.
If you’ve ever fantasized of succulent meats being constantly brought to your table for as long as your heart desires, dream no more, because Bossa Nova is a churrascaria, and ‘churrascaria’ means ‘massive meat festival’ in this part of the word.
The real beauty of Bossa Nova is the format of how the food is served. There is no menu per se, rather an all-you-can-eat concept whereby for a paltry 130k you can fill up on as much food as you can stuff in your gob, from bacon wrapped chicken, gourmet sausages, rump steaks, strip loin caps, lamb, to an extensive salad bar (come back veggies all is not lost!). Don’t forget to bring the nippers along too, with kids between 5-11 years old eating for 65k, and toddlers under 5 eating for free. There’s even a selection of lipsmacking desserts included in that price such as chocolate mousse, panna cotta or Spanish menjar blanco (almond cream).
Grab a table in the classy, homey style interior and enjoy a relaxed Canggu atmosphere for both lunch and dinner. An extensive beverage list features an ample amount of top-notch cocktails and refreshing drinks if that’s your cup of tea, but let’s be honest, good meat demands good wine. Happily enough a rather swanky looking walk-in wine cellar sits just next to the kitchen, fully stocked with plenty of vino from all over the world to compliment the carne. Even better news is that most of it is available by the glass, meaning if you’re only after a snifter of red there’s no need to shell out for a whole bottle. (85k/glass for the Undurraga Pinot Noir). In true churrascaria style, diners are presented first with a small painted wooden top, half green half red. When you’re full up, flip it over so red is on top. Hungry for more? Go green and the staff will keep coming over to dole out more meaty goodness direct to your plate. This in itself is quite a spectacle, each massive skewer thinly sliced with a huge knife tableside, which you then pick off with the provided tongs. Anywhere else and you’d think twice about getting too close to a man brandishing a sword and half a cow on a skewer.
Along with Bossa Nova, the spanking new Canggu Plaza boasts a Trattoria restaurant as well as Suksema Sushi Bar to satisfy your appetite. Wednesday is Jazz night down at the plaza, so bring your mates and soak up the smooth sounds of Lisa Soul and her band between 7-10pm, all the while filling up on the best of Brazilian traditional cuisine. The Ting Tings Sounds From Nowheresville
Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder
We Started Nothing” proclaimed UK dance pop duo Jules de Martino and Katie White back in 2008 with the title of their debut album, and while it did throw up a couple of pretty catchy singles, it only takes a short trawl though their patchy latest effort Sounds From Nowhere to observe that that title has become uncomfortably ironic. Despite a relatively brisk 10 tracks (none of which are over four minutes), it doesn’t take long before everything feels awfully bogged down and samey, the early upbeat promise soon giving way to repetitive shouty cheerleader style rapping and plagiarized guitars. If you really fancy drawing out proceedings even further there’s the bloated deluxe edition album with a full 19 tracks for those who have plenty of disposable time on their hands. The track listing has the air of having been created using those jig-word fridge magnets - “Hang it Up”, “One by One”, “Give it Back” – the sort of thing that was de riguer in the mid 90’s when Irish disco funksters Moloko had their moment in the sun. Oddly reminiscent of a Rage Against the Machine rant, the bouncy quiet/loud “Guggenheim” starts off well enough but the sound of White trying to do a Zach de la Rocha on the chorus is simply nauseating. “This time I’m gonna get it right” she screeches, perhaps in reference to the fact that halfway through recording SFN the duo ditched half of their new material and started again, much to the record company’s disdain. Meanwhile the repetitive refrain of “Day to Day” sounds like a Spice Girls B-side at best, joining the majority of tracks from the album that vanish from memory as soon as they’ve left the speakers. But isn’t dancy/poppy music meant to be a bit kitsch? A bit throwaway? A bit of dancefloor fodder to get the party started of an evening? Well, yes absolutely, but SFN makes me want to go and jump around in about the same sort of way that watching Jaws makes me want to go and swim in the sea. Sadly there’s little to take away from this album – let’s hope they make it back from Nowheresville soon. Dan Ashcroft

Padma Beach delivers perfect waves for Bali leg of Rip Curl GromSearch!
P
adma Beach’s latest rising surf star, Raju Sena, scored a narrow victory at the Rip Curl GromSearch at Padma Beach, Bali on Sunday. Sena (15, Padma) saved his best for last, putting on his best performance of the day in the final to win the under-16 division by a fraction of a point ahead of Koko Mitsua (15, Nusa Dua). Rounding out the final was former two-time GromSearch Bali champ Jeren Kiring (15, Canggu) in third and Nicholas Leonard-Artha (15, Seminyak) in fourth.
The Bali stop of the 2012 GromSearch Southeast Asia Series saw the highest turnout in event history, with 92 frothing grommets signing up to compete on Sunday. The groms came from all over the island of Bali, and included a few internationals from America, Australia, Belgium and England. The groms enjoyed nonstop perfect three-foot peaks all day, as Padma featured a perfect left and perfect right peeling for 75 yards and eventually meeting up in the inside shore break section.
As the top two placing surfers at Padma, Sena and Mitsua have qualified for the GromSearch Southeast Asia Finals, Oct. 20-21 at Kuta Beach, Bali. They will square off against the top groms from GromSearch events in Java, Sumbawa and Thailand for the opportunity to compete in the Rip Curl International GromSearch Final, held in conjunction with the Rip Curl Pro ASP World Tour event at Australia’s legendary Bells Beach.

Meanwhile, in the first-ever girls division of a GromSearch Bali event, it was Double Six Beach local Aysia, 16, who took home the inaugural title. Aysia was clearly the most powerful surfer of the girls event, throwing down big powerful hacks on the playful Padma walls and executing nearly every single maneuver she attempted. In second place was Cinta (10, Uluwatu), followed by Giada (11, Seminyak) in third place and Dhea (11, Kuta) in fourth. The Under-14 division was a much closer battle, with Rio Waida (12, Jimbaran) snagging the 5.7 wave score he needed with less than a minute remaining to leapfrog past Putu Agus (10, Denpasar) for first place. Coming in third was Matius (13, Kuta), followed by Tenshi Ishii (9, Kuta) in fourth.

Wahoo Blue SC Speed and Cadence Sensor
This is the adjustable magnifying light that provides distortion-free, illuminated magnification from any angle. Unlike lesser spherical lenses that distort images and cause eyestrain, this superior magnifier’s aspheric lens prevents spherical aberration that distorts images, resulting in optimal clarity from edge to edge of the lens regardless of its position. The rectangular lens has a 4 1/2” x 6” viewing area and provides 2X magnification for reading small text or inspecting fine details of collectibles or crafts. Twelve LEDs line the underside of the lens and cast bright white light without the glare common to fluorescent and incandescent bulbs. Three levels of light output provide customizable illumination and the device’s dual flexible goosenecks allow the lens to be raised, lowered, or positioned at any angle. With a scratch-resistant lens coating and a 6 3/4” diameter base that allows unobtrusive set up on a desk or table. www.hammacher.com $199.95

ive female painters from different generations of Kelompok Akar Ilalang are exhibiting their works at Griya Santrian Gallery. These female artists who grew up in the strict Javanese culture with its ideology of patriarchy had experienced many gender inequalities. Although brought up in that culture, these women don’t openly rebel against male dominance. They just express it symbolically with a witty parody. They say that they are still Javanese women who live with the norms and philosophies of patriarchal society. The fine art is just a space to “sound”. For them, painting is a career and also a medium to share their thoughts and to express their imaginations and fantasies, even as a therapy to heal the inner wounds. Griya Santrian Gallery, Jl. Housed in an old building which has been completely renovated, painted white and decorated in black and white, M2 combines the atmosphere of a spa with a men’s club offering a variety of relaxation areas and an outdoor plunge pool, a bar area with Wi-Fi and multi-purpose treatment rooms. With a grand staircase leading to the upper level, a spacious landing is home to the reflexology area while private treatment rooms are designed for a variety of unique treatments.
www.beatmag.com
:
Combining Balinese spa specialties with Indian therapies and a menu of aesthetic offerings as well, M2’s all male therapist have all undergone a rigorous training schedule in various treatments. The men’s only club and spa has adapted all their therapies to suit men. These include the unusual pizichil massage which is a four handed massage derived from a royal ritual which involves hot oil which is poured and vigorously massaged into the body. Lymphatic massage is designed to detox the body and get the juices flowing.
:
As part of a large spa company, the oils and
potions that are created for men encompass both local and imported brands. Biotherm products for men are used in the salon and natural products like boreh for the scrubs are locally produced. Natural scented oils with a masculine flavor set this spa apart from the female and unisex spas.
:
Great care has been taken to design the rooms and the therapies to suit their targeted clientele. General Manager, Veronique, says this is not only for men who live the alternate lifestyle, heterosexual men are also welcome, and in these days where all men are embracing their feminine side, the concept for M2 seems an idea whose time has come. The therapies are thoroughly professional and include a Jacuzzi room with an infra-red sauna as well as a facial clinic offering some high tech aesthetic treatments for men.

Back in The 70’s – Tribute to Beatles’. Hard Rock was founded for the first time in 1971 in London by Isaac Tigrett and Peter Morton. Today, Hard Rock Cafés can be visited in over 53 countries. To celebrate its 41st anniversary, Hard Rock Café Jakarta took the theme “Back in the 70’s – Tribute to the Beatles”, the event presented an authentic Beatles look-a-like local band called G-Pluck and they brought back some nostalgia with Beatles’ songs. There were also some memorabilia set in the café, such as dolls and The Beatles’ very own guitars. There was also a charity session where the money collected will be donated to Yayasan pita Kuning and a dinner with HIV/AIDS volunteers.
