We will be holding the first Beat Party since a couple of years ago next Friday night at Sky Garden’s massive and newly completed Sky Dome. There will be food and drinks available for the first two hours with entertainment from local rockers Balian and later DJs James Sullivan, Jack McCord and Patrick Oliver. It’s a regular dance music festival. We’ll also be presenting The Beat Awards 2012 early in the evening. Voting for the awards closes midnight on Sunday July 8 so please log on through beatmag.com, our facebook page or scan the code below to go straight to the voting page on your smartphone. It’s time to vote for the parties, the venues, the restaurants, the DJs and the people who made Bali rock as we only know it in the last year. Cast your vote now. Good luck to all the nominees and may the best nominee win. The awards will be presented at The Beat 12th Anniversary Party at Sky Garden’s Sky Dome at 9.30pm Friday the 13th July, 2012. Since it is the last couple of weekends before Ramadhan kicks off, guaranteeing some relaxing times ahead for much of the local and Islamic crowd, this weekend the mayhem begins in a big way with a number of big shows on the go. Adora, over Sanur way, will be celebrating their Grand Opening, Hu’u has DJ Yasmin Le Bon in the house, SOS the Round Table Knights, Vi Ai Pi has Nick Sijmen, and W Resort will be pouring the Bubbles and Pearls, and that’s just on Friday night. Then next Friday the 13th looks set to be massive with shows all over town. Not only do we have The Beat Party on at Sky Dome, but also on the same night DJ Rommy’s on at Akasaka, Eikon has DJ E-Cats, Hu’u has DJ Ray Foxx from Defected spinning tracks. There are a number big nights on the way so keep your hat on and we hope to see you next Friday night for this year’s Beat Party. Scan Here to Vote till Midnight Sunday July 8

W Hotel welcomes the high season with SPF 2012 Summer is the time to be in Bali especially when the SPF (Sip. Play. Flirt.) 2012 music festival comes to W Retreat and Spa in Seminyak, from July 18-21. SPF 2912 is a major musical event that involves scores of international DJs performing all genres of music from all corners of the globe at sunset and in the evenings. The festival will peak on July 21 with the WET Deck pool party that will see all 12 DJs performing from 3pm until the W Bali’s signature fireworks and light show closes the party at 10pm. Headliners for the SPF 2012 event on July 21 include Rob Garza of Thievery Corporation and Jason Bentley, Music Director of KCRW Radio (Los Angeles).

Bali to open a cartoon museum Plans to open a cartoon museum honouring the art and humour of local cartoonists was confirmed by Govenor Pastika. “It is very good to see the chronological history of our people in a humorous yet smart way through a cartoon museum,” said Pastika at the event, Drawing Cartoon Faces Bali Mandara at Denpasar’s Cultural Park. The Bali Chairman of the United Indonesian Cartoonist Society (Pakarti), Ida Bagus Matinaya, said caricature art in Bali has developed since 1981. “We have many meaningful and educated works,” he said. “Cartoon art is special and paradoxical since the artwork can either make people happy or sad. Every developing country uses cartoons to explain its social phenomenon.” He also pointed out that ethics must exist as in journalism. The cartoonist should not insult other tribes, religions or races and insults against people with disabilities are not acceptable. The Deputy Chariman of Partika, Made Gede Parama Artha, added that the museum could attract many tourists and both old and new works could be displayed. Ray Foxx hu’u bar | friday 13 JuLY

Roots: A Londoner with a rich history in music, Ray Foxx was brought up on the violin as a child, but fought his way onto an electric guitar as a teenager. Soon after, he began to be influenced by the likes of Outkast and other hip hop/rap music, which inevitably lured him into the beautiful world of electronic music where he has found great success. A producer and a DJ, Ray is an artist that strives to communicate with people through music and is truly passionate about what he does.

Sounds: House.

Where You Might Have Heard Him “La Musica” featuring the sexy vocals of Lovelle was a huge hit that thrusted Ray into the spotlight, and became a massive favorite all over Ibiza last Summer. Launched on the infamous Defected music label, it gained huge support all across the world. You may also have heard one of Ray’s movin’ sets at various clubs he frequents around London, or in Ibiza where he and Lovelle performed “La Musica” live to a screaming party crowd.

www.beatmag.com

Why See Him In a very vast talent pool of house music and a steady stream of competition, Ray Foxx has made his own place and appears to just be taking off. His productions cover a nice range of ground, and his DJing taste in great music goes even further. His sound is perfect for a nice warm night in beautiful Bali.

E-Cats eikon | FRIday 13 JuLY

Roots:

Stacey Butler, better known in the dance music world as E-Cats has been playing a large part in its movement around Australia. Coming from Sydney, Stacy is one half of the very successful and still growing Glovecats dubstep duo. Aside from his solo DJ gigs and playing with DJ John Glover as Glovecats, he also puts his talents to good use in the studio. He also promotes and creates events and parties. Much more than just a talented DJ, E-Cats does his fair share in contributing to the global scene and culture.

Sounds:

Dubstep, Disco, Funky 70’s.

Where You Might Have Heard him

With a solid performance last year at Eikon, E-Cats has already had the pleasure of touching down on Indonesian soil. If you’ve spent any amount of time around the scene in Australia, you’re sure to have heard of him. He’s played big time shows like Creamfields Australia, Parklife, and is a regular rock star for the famous Chinese Laundry Fridays. Glovecats have also constructed plenty of fantastic mixes, a very special one in particular being ‘Dubstep Invasion’ with Kid Kenobi.

www.beatmag.com

Why See him

Not sure if you’ve received the memo yet, but dubstep has become pretty big. Aside from an arsenal of that newly beloved genre, E-Cats goes deep into other realms of anything that is solid club music and is sure to fuel a dance floor. Welcome him back to Indonesia as he embarks upon another great journey in Bali nightlife.

Balian sky garden | friday 13 JuLY

Roots: The members of Balian met while attending a local indie concert in Sanur in 2009. They started talking about music and realizing that they had a lot of musical taste in common, decided to form a jam band. The band is made up of Edward on guitar vocals who studied at the Sydney Conservatorium, Gembull, a master gamelan player on drums, and Made on the bass. Both Gembull and Made make up the rhythm section of famed local Indonesian grunge band, Navicula.

Sounds: Think of the Seattle rock scene in the 90s, covers and originals.

Where You Might Have Heard of them

www.beatmag.com

If you’ve followed the live music scene in Bali, chances are you’ve come across Balian at one live event or another. They’ve played at afterparties for Oakley surf events, the Hard Rock, Black Dog, Raw, Kuta Karnival’s food festival, the Bikers’ Club Fest at Double Six, Single Fin, JP’s and other local gigs. Two thirds of the band consists of members from Navicula and anyone who knows anything about live music in Indonesia definitely knows them.

Why See them They are currently recording an eponymous album so there’s plenty of new material to be played. Come and check out one of the best live acts in town, at Sky Dome at Sky Garden on Friday the 13th for The Beat 12th Anniversary Party.

James Sullivan has been in Indonesia for many years, first in Jakarta, now based in Bali and frequently between the capital and Bali playing electronic music and organising international shows around the country. The well acclaimed English spinner will be playing at The Beat Party this week at the new Sky Dome in Kuta and we thought it was high time we got some info about the man and his toys.

James Sullivan

061

sky garden | friday 13 JuLY The Beat: How did you first come to Indonesia? Was it love at first sight?

John Digweed, Francois K, Joris Voorn are still up there.

James: The first time I came here was with friends who were Indonesian but grew up in London. They hadn't been to Indonesia for about 15 years and were coming back to visit family and asked me if I would like to join. It was either Spain or Indonesia that year and Indonesia sounded much more appealing.

TB: How has the music you’ve been playing been

TB: And how did you get involved in playing electronic dance music?

evolving over the past few years? Any particular directional pull?

James: To be honest, its always been the same music, just the sound has changed. Music is like fashion every few years a new trend will come along but the fundamental elements remain the same. TB: You have been helping to bring talent into Indonesia for many years, how did that get started

James: Me and a bunch of friends got involved and what have been some of the highlights so far?

TB: How would you describe the brand of music you are playing nowadays?

James: Just electronic dance music I guess. TB: How about musical influences, who would be the producers you are most into at the minute?

And what can we expect to see in the near future?

JAMES: I started by helping local venues bring over DJs. The music they were into was produced by my friends in London, so it was easy to hook them up, the scene was pretty new and not many DJs came here at that time. The scene grew and so did the demand for DJs and I soon found myself spending more time here than in the UK. The highlight for me was the Jakarta Tiesto show in 2006, it is still the biggest and best event I've been involved in. The crowd was huge and the atmosphere that night was amazing. At the moment, I’m working on a couple of festivals, a lot of live concerts and gigs and also some non-music events which are pretty cool also.

James: Over the years there have been so many, You can see and hear James spin next Friday July a lot are still around and some have disappeared. At the moment people like Noir, Maya Jane Coles, Solomum are making great music, and people like

13 from around 11pm at Sky Dome as part of The 12th Anniversary Beat Party and Awards at Sky Dome at Sky Garden, Kuta.

pretty much at the start, we used to host parties and the parties grew bigger with each event. We would have queues down the street. None were really DJs at the time because we didn’t know how to, so we would just took it in turns. Some of them went on to become pretty famous, flying around the world DJing.

Patrick Oliver

h e r e n o w

062

Roots: Patrick Oliver began DJing in sunny Miami Beach, Florida in 2001. He’s spun in some of the hottest clubs that city had to offer at the time including Opium Garden, Tantra, The Living Room Downtown, Crobar and Space. He soon rose up the ranks and became musical director and resident DJ at Kuru & Y in downtown Miami. Sounds: House, open format, and mash-ups.

Where You Might Have Heard Him: Oliver has traveled extensively with gigs across the globe in places like Italy, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and here in Indonesia. He’s played with a number of contemporary DJs some of which include Louie Vega, Kenny Carpenter, DJ Disciple, Armand Van Heldan, Kaskade, Vandalism and Andy Duguid. He has a monthly podcast that serenades thousands of people remotely with his newest sounds.

Why See Him: Patrick Oliver is no stranger to the superclubs and Sky Garden being Bali’s only one is a natural fit for him. His latest performance will be at the beat anniversary party so expect greatness.

sky garden | friday 13 JuLY

Jack McCord Roots: Jack McCord has his roots in Sydney, Australia. The DJ attended the prestigious University of Sydney. He also calls Bali home and we thinks that’s very swell.

Sound: House

www.beatmag.com

Where you might have heard of him: Jack was Australia’s Hed Kandi representative and if you’ve never heard of Hed Kandi, do yourself a favor and educate yourself. He’s traveled the world from London to Ibiza, Miami to Munich, Shanghai to Sydney. He’s played at top clubs like Ministry of Sound, Pacha, Gatecrasher, Zouk, El Divino, Paradise Club to name a few and is a proficient remixer and producer. His original releases ‘Real Love’, ‘Feel So Good’, ‘It’s A Shame’, ‘Move’ were on labels including Ministry Of Sound, Housonic, Stoney Boy and Hed Kandi.

Why see him: Hed Kandi is no joke and if they stood behind Mr McCord then that’s a stamp of approval worth its salt. Plus he’s playing at The Beat Anniversary Party and we happen to think that the beat is a swell magazine.

Triple Jem the rooftop 88 | FRIday 13 JuLY Roots: Triple Jem’s Ben and Hoda have very distinct backgrounds: Ben is originally from Los Angeles and has been working in the music arena for some 15 years, playing to crowds in Europe, Asia and his homeland in the US of A. Hoda was born and raised in Beirut, Lebanon, and has been immersing herself in global events for the last few years, fine tuning a sound that has earned her quite a reputation. Combining those energies has led to this partnership, and it has proven to be quite the alliance, joining taste and technique into a unique and focused sound.

Sounds: Deep house, underground and melodic tech-house.

Where you might have heard them: Triple Jem have headlined a number of events on the island during their time in the region, and have also been seen as far afield as Berlin and Burning Man. Their production and studio time is where most of the duo’s energy is spent, so working on collaborations and independent releases for some of the scene’s best underground labels is at the forefront of their efforts.

www.beatmag.com

Why see them: This duo brings a totally new dimension to the tech house music scene and employ a myriad of dynamics and talent. They combine soul and technology to provide a new wave in electronic dance music, blending layers and textures of sound, encasing the listener in an endless soundscape of epic proportions. It’s a journey people, and one well worth taking. Catch them live at the Black Box Party, Friday July 13th. 88 Jalan Kerobokan.

Timeline of Fame There’s a lot more to Fatboy Slim than meets the eye. Here’s a flash of his musical journey that started way before he became what he is today, which of course is a total legend behind the decks. Here is his timeline of fame.

ungu akasaka | FRIday 20 JuLY Roots:

Ungu was formed in 1996 but the band had to wait until 2002 for their first studio album Laguku (My Song) to be released. The name Ungu, which means purple, represents an amalgam of the member’s diverse backgrounds. Makki Omar Parikesit (bass), for instance, had been playing music in the US for some time and even opened for John Mellencamp once before co-founding Ungu in Jakarta. Meanwhile Pasha, or Sigit Purnomo Syamsudin Said, the front man, had a brief stint as a model and TV actor before joining the band in 1998. The rest of the current line-up were either playing for other outfits or working as technicians for the band before being asked to replace the original members.

Sounds: Pop rock

Where You Might Have Heard them

www.beatmag.com

If you are a fan of Indonesian soap operas you won’t forget ‘Bayang Semu’, Ungu’s breakthrough single from their first album, which was the main theme of the highly popular Indonesian soap opera ’ABG’, in 2002. The album titled Laguku (My song) was a success and reached platinum two years later. By then the band had already released their second album Tempat Terindah (The Most Beautiful Place) which fared even better with 80,000 copies sold in the first four months. From that point the only place to go for the boys was the top. The third album, released in 2005, went double platinum and that turned out to be just a warm up. In 2006 they found the faith with their first religious-themed album that coincided with the Ramadhan holiday. Sure enough, 150,000 copies of Surgamu (Your Heaven) were sold in just ten days. To this day Ungu has not been seen coming back down to earth.

Why See them

Along with Peter Pan and Samson, Ungu was at the center of the late Indonesian pop explosion in the first half of the 2000s. While others seem to be on the way down now, Ungu doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. The band has got it all; exceptional musicality in Makki, and charisma in Pasha that will guarantee to captivate many a longtime fan and pop music enthusiasts alike.

cin cin hu’u | FRIday 20 JuLY

Roots:

Whether by luck, accident, or fate…Jonathan Yeo, a very successful club DJ, met Martin Denev, a very successful musician, and an instant musical bond was formed. Where does this meeting take place? In Bali of all places, in none other than a DJ booth. With totally different backgrounds in music, a powerful shared passion is what linked these two together. Martin, a piano/keyboard player amongst many other talents, has studied various types of music all over the world and is no stranger to the lights and stage. Jonathan is no newcomer either, with plenty of international success in some of the world’s best venues.

Sounds:

Expect a fusion of EDM and possible jazz.

Where You Might Have Heard them

As mentioned before, both artists have a vast, very different background, yet have been all over the world. Martin has released two albums in Indonesia on the Demajors label, as well as performed on hundreds of stages and festivals all over the globe. One of them being the hugely popular Java Jazz. Martin also now calls Bali his home. Jonathan has something rather special to boast on a DJ’s resume, having been a resident for 10 years at Club Zouk. He also played Space and Pacha, Ministry of Sound, and Japan’s world famous Yellow. These two artists have surely left their mark in the world of music.

It’s not often you get two unique artists with so much solo success, yet such a diverse background in various music styles, come together and merge to create something so fresh and creative. Cin Cin is much more than just a collaboration of two guys who enjoy music and its expression. It’s closer to being a project that was created and brought together by something much higher, which wanted us all to enjoy what can happen in a creative realm that has no real boundaries. You might be better off trying to find a good reason why not to see them, but very unlikely you’ll find one…

ith over 550 tickets collected at the door, Rock Bar was packed. The show was opened by Joe White, Jack McCord, and Audioflirt before Norman Jay hit the stage at about 9.30pm. His open format set included a lot of old school beats and the crowd loved it especially the lone hula hooper going nuts. Martin East closed the show and high season had thus begun...

nce again DJ Riri Mestika proved that he still knows how to take care of business. His fans had been waiting for his performance at Boshe since 11pm that night. They were warmed up by top 40 tunes from the home band before DJ Parao and the sexy dancers took it up a notch. The roof really came down when DJ Riri Mestika finally took to the deck and made the crowd dance like frenzying hyenas on the dance floor.

The chilling electronic music was a suitable companion to the atmosphere and Dean Cherny was the man responsible. The sound of the waves and the laughter of the families and kids made for a great mellow time.

Lloyd Pringle A resident at Bali’s only megaclub, Sky Garden, Lloyd Pringle will tell you how to survive some very possible scenarios.

“here you go”. For the next hour I DJed with his records and had it rocking from start to finish! It was a surreal but amazing experience! From that point, I knew Sky Garden was the place for me for sure.

www.beatmag.com

1. Ok Lloyd, tell us a little something about yourself, but pretend you’re telling it to an elderly woman from a different galaxy who has no concept of EDM. A little something about myself, OK I’m left handed but I throw things with my right hand?! Figure that out! Ha, firstly I’m really impressed you've spelled my name right, I've been introducing myself as “John” for the past year just because it's easier. I’m from Liverpool, England and moved over here almost a year ago now to DJ full time. About an hour after I left the airport I bumped into a guy called Jamie who is a DJ at Sky Garden, he knew my cousin who I was staying with so we went to see him play later that night. Long story short, they were busy catching up in the DJ box. So Jamie just threw me his headphones and said

2. You’re at a club. A DJ is performing poorly. The crowd is angry and after a poorly selected track, the enraged mob begin to lynch the DJ. It’s an ugly scene, blood everywhere, and scraps of the last DJ are all over the dance floor. This is not an easy crowd. You are seized by security and made to play on the untouched DJ equipment. What are the first three tracks you play to pacify these savage punters? Haaaaaa amazing question! All bar the lynching and blood part, it's pretty much part and parcel of what goes through my mind before a gig anyway... In any order: 1. The Jackson 5 - “I Want You Back” 2. Tiffany - “I Think We're Alone Now” 3. The Clash - “Should I stay or Should I Go” I'm gonna give you a fourth (you'll know why later on) 4 - Shakatak - “Are You Watching Me (Watching You)”

3. What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever seen anybody to at Sky Garden? Mark Eon's hair (Sky Garden DJ haha)!! Ha no, there is always something out of the ordinary going on in there... From people who I swear dance to a completely different song to what I’m playing, to a guy wearing (in Bali, nevermind a nightclub) jeans, a thick hoodie, woolly hat and sunglasses. Oh, and there was the time when there was a power cut and the crowd of about 250 used a combination of singing, whistles, and banging their own flipflops together to make their own music. That was actually pretty cool! Oh and I'm pretty sure I saw a pitbull in there once - not the rapper. 4. In your opinion, what is Bali lacking in terms of music? I'm pretty sure Bali has something for everyone, if you're after a specific style, you just gotta know where to look ;) That's why I spend so much time analyzing the crowd during my sets, I want them to go away having had an amazing night whether it be a Tuesday or a Saturday but I get that everyone’s tastes are different. What works for one group of people in the room might not for another so you'll constantly hear me changing the norm and e.g. dropping into a R'n'B track for a few bars. I also edit 90% of what I play so that track you have heard so many times before is a 'little bit different' and more exciting, I think that's what sets me apart from the rest - I’m not an open format DJ by any means but I'd say I'm the most “open format-ish” DJ at Sky Garden. Is that even a word? 5. If you were an interrogator and you had an intelligence report that a potentially world ending attack was about to take place but the man who you are interrogating is not cooperating, using your skills as a DJ, what songs at full volume would you put on repeat to make him speak?

7. You have a billion dollars to stage the biggest dance festival ever. Tell us how you’d organize it. A billion dollars? Wow! I've never even had a billion anything! Actually, imagine having a billion pennies?! Wouldn't that do your head in? I mean you could pay for anything you wanted but you'd have to keep emptying your piggy bank and counting out the money in pennies before you went to the shop. That would suck......And then you'd have to fill your piggy bank up again which would take ages.....Sorry what was the question again?

f e a t u r e

091

8. You come into possession of a time machine that only goes back in time 100 years and only does it once. Being a DJ, what year would you go back to and how would you changed the face of music? These scientists aren't half slackers! Only do it once? Pffft. For a start, I'd be on the set of the Michael Jackson Pepsi advert with a fire extinguisher!!! I'd probably be in the toilet cubicle next to Elvis as well telling jokes, you know just incase! 9. You’re at the end of an interview. You’ve already answered eight of the most epic questions of all time, what do you say now? I thought that was a trick question so I went back and counted there was actually eight! Ok, might as well give it a bigger plug than the one in Oprah's bathtub. Keep an eye out for my debut single, LPR vs Shakatak - “Watching You 2012” and catch me on Facebook.com/djlloydpringle and @LloydPringle on Twitter!

6. You an Apple man or a Microsoft man? Why? This is so weird, I’m an Apple convert but I hate fruit! Have you ever tried eating a keypad?? Urghhh.

www.beatmag.com

That's easy, anything by “The Cut” (my roommates alias) haha! No really, maybe a Paris Hilton mixtape?

Homegrown & Well Known:

www.beatmag.com

is he your typical hippie restaurateur or not?

Ary’s Warung might be the first ever restaurant in Ubud with a fine dining concept. What made you choose the “non-Ubudian” way, a warung which is not at all a warung? Ary’s is actually very Ubudian. It’s just that, dare I say this, ahead of its time when it was first built. The creative nuances and vision was pretty much an anomaly, it has stood apart from the rest since it was started in 1983. It has been a different type of local warung and has evolved from a place with good music and mushroom omelets to vegetarian-inspired world food, to contemporary Balinese/Asian cuisine using local ingredients while also supporting the slow food idea. Ubud is a place where people choose alternative lifestyles and go hand in hand with the local community with spirituality and creativity as the main aspect. You just opened a new unique restaurant (my personal favorite) named Betelnut. You’ve already owned quite a few businesses, you keep expanding—life’s good. Which is your priority, food or art? To work is my tool to improve my spiritual growth, because wealth is overrated. Food is art. Food and art are chemistry of matter and always surprises our senses, not in a hedonistic way but as an awakening/awareness practice for our well being. Betelnut fell into our lap when the local government faced a dilemma. They already released a permit for this international fast food chain to be opened where Betelnut is now located, while the Ubud community refused it. The owner of the fast food place didn’t want to lose money, so we, my wife Tara and I, with a little help from my direct family were supported by the community to takeover the place. At first we were not quite sure what to do with it because it was too big for us. But then we

were eventually inspired to build a place for a playground of new ideas, art and culture; and being the witness and hopefully a positive force in today’s transformation, that is triggered by digital technology and migration. How do you find the food industry in Bali and in Indonesia? Do you have enough support from the government? Today’s markets are more educated and open to new ideas of taste and ingredients. The Mecca of food is not France anymore, we are now free from the authoritarian French ideas. Allowing local food geniuses to flourish with local ingredients, you can make almost anything, in a way it’s like a revolution of ideas. But what we are facing now are food industrial corporations, we should raise more awareness on this. What government should do so their role is more useful is to support local foods and farmers. We don’t really need help, just don’t stand in our way. Now let’s get personal, please name your all-time favourite records and why? I love most of the albums released by Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Miles Davis, Brian Eno, Elvis Costello, Philip Glass, Peter Gabriel, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Why? Because I’m an older guy with hopeless romantic syndrome. Your all-time favourite books and why? When I was 12 I read Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea. It taught me how words can describe feelings and situations so descriptively. Horison magazine in late 70s showed me how words can brighten our horizons. While the Kho Ping Ho series of Kungfu novels enlightened me with Buddhist values. Any last nagging words? Optimism and pessimism start when you are single, do you either bring or not bring a condom before you go out, that’s the question.

www.beatmag.com

What’s the history of your interest in food? Although my mom is Balinese, we had lived in various places like Jakarta, Sumatra and Bali, as a kid I was pretty exposed to lots of different kinds of food. So food had always been something to enjoy and to talk about within my family.

To Market, to Market L

ike most people I have been buying my eggs at the supermarket. Free range, organic, the whole western marketing trip tied up in a humble brown shell. Recently though my trusty pembantu (domestic helper) came home with a plastic bag of eggs from the local pasar. Cheaper by a fair margin, these eggs are big and beautiful. Fresh with lovely sunny yolks, it has proved once and for all that shopping local is the go. My lemon tarts sing with colour, my banana cake rises higher and my flourless chocolate cake (held together with trusty eggs) is bigger and richer than before, meaning more chocolate for your rupiah. Going local isn’t always translated on to restaurant plates on an island where foie gras is as common as sausages, but there are some chefs who are taking the concept to heart and working with local ingredients can test a chef’s skill with amazing results. The biggest problem with local meat and poultry is the lack of fat. Lean stringy ducks, scrawny kampong chickens and beef with almost no fat poses some genuine challenges.

www.beatmag.com

Stefan, Executive Chef at Alila Uluwatu wanted to do something with those kampong chickens and ended up doing a confit, a method where you cook the bird in fat and then refrigerate it to make it incredibly tender and wickedly indulgent, before giving it a final blast to crisp it up. Another Alila Chef, Eelke from their Ubud property, once served me a young local lamb that was prepared in a variety of ways, it was spectacular. I went out and bought some of the tiny chops and they were as good as any imported ones, you just needed more of them.

by Sarah Dee

I often entertain using local tenderloin. Marinated and then seared all over on a hot barbecue plate before a proper resting, translates into a very fancy warm salad with lots of locally grown rucola leaves, shaved parmesan, a sprinkling of walnuts and a warm balsamic dressing. Feeds loads of people for one hundred thousand and change. Bread and coffee are two staples of life and while the delis and supermarkets are more convenient, take a trip up to Banjar Kuwum above Kerobokan and sample the fabulous breads at Kayu Api, there’s no turning back. For the longest time having a coffee in the US was referred to as a cup of Java and coffee is getting better and better all the time. As featured in the Hollywood movie, Bucket List, one of the things that had to be done before dying was to enjoy a cup of Luwak coffee; the beans literally are expelled from the back end of a civet. Doesn’t sound great but it is a very expensive local treat revered by coffee connoisseurs. Personally I am happy with my Butterfly Globe brand of Arabica Bali coffee. It comes up a treat in my stove-top espresso maker. Stepping out of your comfort zone and trolling markets and specialty producers for new and interesting ingredients can give enthusiastic cooks some nice surprises. Even if you don’t look beyond fresh eggs, local coffee, vegetables and fruit, you will notice the difference in taste and definitely in your spending.

blackbox

We had a chat with the organizers of the Black Box show on the roof top of Tony’s Skate Park on the canggu turnoff on Jalan Kerobokan that will be held next Friday night July 13 about what the show is all about and what we can expect.

The Beat : What is Black Box? Black box : Black Box is an electronic musical gathering, set amidst one of the most outlandish locations I have ever seen. It’s a one-off production on a mighty scale with some very serious props – no pun intended. Add to that a rather substantial sound system, an amazing selection of underground DJs, a private and utterly unique setting, and you have yourself a formidable party for sure!

The Beat : Why Now? Why Bali? Black box : Circumstances have all aligned to provide all the key ingredients: the right place, at the right time, with the right people. The purpose of this party is to return to the ways of old, back in the day when a party would be held at a warehouse or in a field in the middle of nowhere. People would know it was happening, they’d have to find the location, and then party till the early hours before it was shut down and dismantled forever… Bali has always been a massive party hub and there are frequently big names on the horizon or events that cause a stir. Our aim here is to provide something that you don’t see every day, literally doing something for the sake of doing it and sharing the experience with as many like-minded people as we can.

The Beat : What can we expect from the Black Box party? Black box : We have lined up four outstanding international acts who will be playing everything from

www.beatmag.com

deep house to serious tech and minimal sounds. There’s a fully operational bar, great public facilities and a dedicated security presence to keep things running smoothly. Basically, everything is in place for a proper late night session.

The Beat : So what’s next? Black box : To be honest, there are several really good options on the table. Our goal is to maintain a sense of rhythm over the coming months, so we will select locations and styles that allow us to really deliver. We will always strive to provide the best elements for any production we put our name to, so the place, the people and the party are paramount. Keep your eyes and ears open as we'll definitely let you know what happens next.

W

ith a look that is more Miami Beach than Kuta Beach, The Stones entertainment complex occupies a commanding view over the sands, and provides plenty of options for diners and clubbers who fancy doing it in style. No less than three venues are tucked inside the chic, sprawling premises, and with the 307-room hotel venue set to open within the next couple of months it’s clear that The Stones is going to be a tough cookie to beat. For those looking for the ultimate in a stylishly chilled afternoon, Infamy rooftop bar & lounge with jacuzzi opens from 12 noon and is the perfect sunset spot for a cocktail or two. Downstairs Blue Sapphire club opens between 7pm-2am (3 on weekends), with a live music program for the early crew before the house DJ cranks up the tempo from 12 ‘til drop. Dining wise, the cavernous upstairs restaurant Salt of the Earth provides a casual dining spot with a lip-smacking Western menu and fresh seafood for lunch and dinner, all the while affording stunning views across Kuta Beach. In case all that isn’t enough, a trendy decking area out front boasts comfy sun loungers and an inviting pool to cool off in – beach club style. A ‘small bites’ menu featuring tasty morsels such as fries, calamari, meatballs and Thai paper rice rolls will keep the grazers happy, while a new Indonesian specials menu showcases a selection of the archipelago’s finest and most renowned dishes. Having nipped in for a spot of late lunch with a couple of mates on holiday, we decided to take a punt on the local menu so I can introduce them to a bit of home cooking, courtesy of local chef Des Yanto. Yanto has a wealth of experience around town, having flashed up in such hallowed kitchens as Mozaic and KuDeTa, and it’s clear that the menu choices – both local and Western, have been well thought out and should keep the majority of diners salivating for more. We decide to go the whole hog and order up the Soto Ayam (chicken broth 40k), Mie Goreng (fried noodles 40k), Sop Buntut (beef soup 55k), Gule Kambing (lamb 55k) and Nasi Goreng Ayam (chicken fried rice 55k) to share out and get a taste of everything. This turns out to be a good move, as everything is hastily devoured, with not a morsel left over – the dishes easily as good as you’d find around town (which is saying

something considering how many places serve up top-notch local cuisine) in a setting that you won’t find in your average Kuta restaurant. If you’re all nasi’d out then the lunch and dinner menus are chock full of more international dishes such as the three big S’s (salads, soups and sandwiches), pastas, risottos, fish & chips, seared scallops and prawn ravioli. A live music special program that endeavours to bring big name acts right to the beach is the finishing touch that means whatever you are looking for, you’re pretty likely to find it at The Stones. hot chip

In Our Heads

Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder

ack in the early naughties Hot Chip burst onto the scene with a very particular sound. Like their contemporary James Murphy and other DFA-associated acts, their early albums inspired brooding, snarkiness, and dancing in equal measures, and were a mixture of quirky production, indie kid attitude, and infectious funk. Underneath Alexis Taylor’s distinct voice, however, there was always a sense of something guarded and ironic. That changed dramatically with 2009’s One Life Stand, a record of almost embarrassing earnestness and devotion to love and happiness. It gave the sense that the group had settled into an identity and it breathed new life into their song writing. It was a lot more adult and comfortable, but in truth, it was also rather dull. Three years have passed, with band member Joe Goddard releasing an excellent dancefloor-driven album as part of The 2 Bears, updating the humour and funk of Hot Chip’s first albums. In Our Heads sounds as if he has brought some of that energy back to the group. This is the rare album that has just as much groove as lyrical strength, and it shows listeners how dance music can be smart without rubbing your face in it. Pop hooks and big synthy sounds blend beautifully with heartfelt sentiments. “How Do You Do It” is a paean to love and a celebration of life backed by a slab of late 80s disco funk. “Look at Where We Are” drops the big-room sound and takes a successful left turn into guitar-driven quiet storm balladry. “Flutes” is a slow-burner with an infectious hook and an 808 state feel, while “Let Me Be Him” brings a Peter Gabriel sensibility to the spaced out R&B sound that has taken over these days, shifting into italo territory by the end of its seven minutes. Overall, the album could probably do with a better track order, but perhaps this is intentional. It has the feeling of a Prince album, in that whether you like slow crooning or upbeat funkiness, you’re likely to be hitting the fast forward button quite a bit. With a little patience, however, and an open mind, it’s an enjoyable ride, and one that suggests that the group has plenty of tricks up its sleeve for the years to come. Dan Ashcroft

a riveting 30 minute duel in epic conditions on the final day of the O’Neill Freak of the Reef Challenge at Yoyos Bay in West Sumbawa, Bali’s Raditya Rondi aggressively took charge of the solid six-foot plus waves and posted a string of impressive scores to best fellow Bali ripper Pepen Hendrik, adding a second West Sumbawa trophy sword to his trophy collection and receiving a winner’s check for Rp 15 million ($1,600 USD), proving he was indeed the “Freak of the Reef.” Raditya won the previous West Sumbawa CocaCola ISC sanctioned event held in 2009, and was runner up in 2008, but both of those events had their finals at Scar Reef, which is a lefthanded wave. This win is especially sweet for the talented goofy footer as he bested a field of the top seeded Indonesian surfers and one of Australia’s top pro juniors at a right hand wave, truly earning his win. “I’m so happy right now…don’t know how to say it, just so happy, said Raditya immediately after the final. “The conditions were really hard in the final, with strong wind and big waves. I was so lucky to beat Pepen in the final, so I’m stoked.” Raditya Rondi’s nickname is “Cabul”, usually shortened to “Bul”, and today he lived up to the moniker by charging the largest set waves like a bull, gouging deep bottom turns, carving up the big faces, and floating over long sections to earn big scores from the judging panel on the beach. His wave count was 5 waves (6.5, 3.5, 8.75, 7.15, and 8.0) to his opponent Hendrik’s

3 (7.25, 6.4, and 7.5) for a final total score of 16.75 to Hendrik’s 14.75. In the Women’s Division competition that took place on Day Two of the event it was Michaela Partin (USA) who added another winner’s check to her collection with her second win of the year, having won her first comp in Indonesia at an ISC/ASC event in the Mentawaii Islands in May. Coming in second was Salini Rangganis from Java, and Alia Murizi from Kalimantan. The six star O’Neill Freak of the Reef Challenge was sanctioned by the Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championships and took place in the scenic area around the PT Newmont mining site in West Sumbawa over a four-day period from June 28 to July 1. The competition was run primarily at the backup location of Yoyos Bay in the Sekongkang area, as the primary site of Scar Reef at Jelenga Beach only produced a few hours of its world renowned waves on June 30 so only three heats were run there. The O’Neill Freak of the Reef Challenge Contest Results: Open Division 1 - Raditya Rondi (Bali) 2 - Pepen Hendrik (Bali) Equal 3rd – Josh Hay (Aus) and Garut Widiarta (Bali Women’s Division 1 - Michaela Partin (USA) 2 - Sally Rengganis (Java) 3 - Alia Murizi (Kalimantan)

Be Brave

By: @JohanJT

Some people say that being brave is a state of mind, and some say it’s a trait. Well, obviously being brave is followed by action, like this princess who finds her own adventure in finding bravery for herself, a teenage superhero who accepts his destiny to fight evil, and a dancer who improves and challenges himself after a defeat. So don’t wuss out, go and watch these films!

Brave Action, Adventure, Comedy. Directors: Mark Andrews, Brenda Chapman. Writers: Steven Purcell, Irene Mecchi. Cast: Kelly Macdonald, Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson, Julie Walters. This obvious animated Oscar-contender comes from both Pixar and Disney. Brave tells a story of a impetuous princess Merida, a skillful archer, who is seeking the true meaning of bravery in carving her own path in life. The story is original, it’s also so universal that both kids and adults can enjoy it. What’s stunning about this film? See how detailed and smooth the animation of of Merida’s curly red hair. Put on the 3D glasses and you’ll have a feast for your eyes!

The Amazing Spider-Man Action, Adventure, Fantasy. Director: Marc Webb. Writers: James Vanderbilt, Steve Kloves, Alvin Sargent. Cast: Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary. “The untold story of Spiderman” is the tagline, and well, the Amazing Spider-Man comes from another Marvel storyteller who reshaped Peter Parker’s identity with a darker background and a rebellious teenage character. The choice of putting both Andrew Garfield as the male lead and Emma Stone as his girl is definitely a good marketing strategy to attract both genders. In this version, it shows you more vigilante action, more amazing cinematography and greater romance to complement the thrills.

StreetDance 2 Drama, Music, Romance. Director: Max Giwa, Dania Pasquini. Writer: Jane English. Cast: Tom Conti, George Sampson, Sofia Boutella. When Ash, atop street dancer in London, got humiliated by an American Crew called Invicible, he sets off to gather the best dancers from around the world to face them in the next competition. In his journey, destiny brings him a meeting with a beautiful sexy salsa dancer, Eva, who eventually gives him passion and magic into his new dance style. Nothing much to expect from a dance genre movie, just enjoy the music, the good looking faces, bodies and groovy moves. Shake your hips and popcorn bucket!

The Natural Acoustics iPhone Amplifier

This is the passive ceramic amplifier made in Italy that produces naturally resonant tones from an iPhone. Designed in Milan, it is handcrafted entirely of slip-cast ceramic fired in Vincenza, renowned since the 18th century for its traditional ceramics that have been compared to the finest Chinese porcelain. The clay itself comes from the Tuscan comune of Montelupo Fiorentino, a prominent center of ceramics production during the Renaissance, its products reaching as far as the first European settlements in Central America. Replicating the curvature and passive amplification of a horn, the amplifier augments sound from an iPhone without requiring auxiliary power or speaker components. The amplifier projects music or phone calls using authentic horn acoustics; simply place an iPhone or iPod in the amplifier’s cradle. Its walnut base provides minimum contact with the horn for optimal acoustic performance. www.hammacher.com $499.95

aken from a Latin word, praeterlabor, meaning to glide, slip past, or flow. Relating to that word, Deus Gallery organized a group exhibition which seems rather random, a collection of artists that share a common bond. Yeah, it seems like the true romantics in the realm of wave dancers capturing the fluid motion of riding a wall of water on a board have put on an art show. The works hanging across the fine walls of the Deus Gallery are by Jack Coleman, Mia Taninaka, Alex Knost, Dustin Humphrey, Dane Peterson, Nicolas Chalmers, and Andrew Wellman.

Australian artist who has settled in Ubud, Nina Packer, found her passion in life through painting. She mixes and blends, scrapes and paints onto any canvas and has an amazing eye for color. Nina paints mainly in oils that makes her artwork bold and bright. The human body is what she prefers to explore in her paintings and she has a penchant for portraits and nudes.

www.beatmag.com

This time, the Bali Center for Artistic Creativity (BCAC) is proud to present Nina’s great works. Nina first came to BCAC on an open studio night and then became a long-term client. Her works were seen by the BCAC’s director and his colleagues, and then they thought that this incredibly talented woman should be introduced to the public at large. Conceivably, the evolution of her work has been nothing less than impressive. The exhibition tackling the theme “Portraits and Nudes” is open for public on July 6 and it will run through to July 26.

www.beatmag.com

The Go Skateboarding Day celebration in Jakarta last week was inspired by an alternative American tradition started in 2003. In 2007 the tradition was picked up in Indonesia by Happen Skateboarding magazine. The fifth Go Skateboarding Day this year was opened with a street parade that started from the main street in the Senayan area and ended at the Ministry of Youth and Sports. After an opening speech by Minister Andi Malarangeng, the day’s program was continued with a number of skateboarding contests like longest ollie, highest ollie, continuous trick kick flip and games of S.K.A.T.E. The all-day celebration finally came to an end at 6pm.

Friday 22 June

Jason Mraz ason Mraz datang ke Jakarta dalam rangkaian tur dunia nya yang berjudul “Tour Is A Four Letter Word”. Jason Mraz menggabungkan berbagai genre dalam musiknya dan berhasil memukau penonton dengan hitsnya seperti “You And I Both”, “Lucky”, “The Remedy”, dan “I’m Yours” yang selalu ditunggu. Lagu terbarunya “I Won’t Give Up” menutup konser yang intim tapi seru ini.
