It’s unbelievable how many people are always hanging around Oberoi nowadays. Tourists are everywhere and milling about at all times of the day and night, shopping, eating, walking and doing all those things that happy tourists do. The chinga ching of the cash registers on that street is going through the roof and you can only wonder where it’s all leading. As more restaurants, bars, convenience stores, real estate agents, villas and hotels open through the Oberoi and Petitenget areas, the infrastructure continues to lag behind without any sign of improvement. The gridlock is on the way and quicker than many imagine. The intersection at the Kerobokan traffic lights is becoming a joke and one of the biggest in town. No signs of an underpass there, not even a small flyover, but backed up traffic all the way to the Petitenget turn off. Whoa, what’s next? We had a wild Beat Party last Friday night. A big thanks to all the people that came along and the ones that made it happen. We didn’t think having a show on Friday the 13th was such a big deal but little did we know. Fortunately it all went well in the end and was probably one of the most memorable parties we’ve had and in many more ways than expected. Thanks again to all those who made the trip to down town Kuta to experience it. On the other end of last weekend was the Fat Boy Slim show at Potato Head. After winning the best party of last year in The Beat Awards on Friday night, the Petitenget venue showed that that was no fluke with another massive show that defied gravity. Having one of the biggest names in the biz spinning tracks always helps, but having the nerve and bank vault to back it up is something else again. Congratulations to everyone involved there too. So it is well and truly the high season of Bali right now. Ramadan may have started in other parts of the country but here we are heading into one of the busiest seasons ever. Keep your hat on. It’s only just begun and it’s going to be quite a ride.

Uma Ubud revives Megibung The rare Balinese tradition of Megibung is making a comeback on July 28 in Uma Ubud. The practice of mass dining out of a shared container – usually a large spread on banana leaf - will be staged as part of a charity program awesomely called “Not Just Another Charity Dinner”, where proceeds will go to Sari Hati Foundation, a small volunteer and community-based educational centre in Banjar Lungsiakan, Ubud, and Yayasan Anak Pemuteran, a support program for junior and senior high school students in Pemuteran, Northwest Bali. Uma Ubud’s Executive Chef, Heidi Flanagan, and Diana von Cranach from Raw and a pioneer of the living food movement in Bali will host the event that will include interesting door prize giveaways during dinner.
The popular Belgium TV personalities, Astrid and John Bryon visited the Elephant Safari Park in Taro, near Ubud to film the highly rated reality show Astrid in Wonderland recently. The couple was shot while having all kinds of fun with the park’s resident pachyderms until late in the afternoon. Later that night the shooting was resumed in glitzy Seminyak where everyone, except the mammals, partied well into the night.

Hey Sababay! A new wine is out for all those connoisseurs of local products that contain intoxicants. Sababay wines is presenting two new wines, Pink Blossom, a vibrant rose style with distinctive exotic fruits flavors and refreshing crisp finish, and Black Velvet, a vibrant light red style with mellow red fruit flavors and gentle tannins, crafted to accommodate a large range of Asian cuisine. The grapes are locally grown in Asteroid Vineyards in Buleleng and are shipped to Sababay Winery in Gianyar. So give it the old college try!

Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang Invitational Opening Ceremony held last Sunday

The 32 surfers invited to compete in the 2012 Rip Curl Cup Invitational at Padang Padang were gathered at Bali’s most revered wave last weekend for the event's opening ceremony. Among the international surf stars receiving one of the coveted Padang Cup invites were Chris Ward (USA), Jamie O'Brien (Hawaii), Anthony Walsh (Australia) and Dean Morrison (Australia). Among the 16 Indonesian surfers invited were defending champion Lee Wilson, Garut Widiarta, and legendary Balinese surfer Rizal Tanjung. The opening ceremony marked the first day of the six-week event waiting period. The heat drawing presentation began promptly at 3pm, followed by a press conference with the surfers and contest organizers. The evening concluded with a traditional Balinese Kecak dance performance. Rip Curl hosted a beach barbeque for everyone in attendance. During the official heat drawing each surfer in the event was called up on stage to choose a number out of the Rip Curl Cup trophy and determine whom he would surf against in the opening round. Now the draw has been made, it’s simply a matter of waiting for a massive Indian Ocean swell to stir the mythical wave at Padang to life.
Clean beach party River to River, the beach cleanup project in Canggu, returns with “BBQ, Bonfire, Boogie for the Beach” to raise funds for a beach cleanup project between Pantai Berawa and Pererenan. On July 27, there will be good times, great music, yummy food, and a big bonfire on the beach for family and friends from 4 to 9pm at Canggu beach in front of Hotel Tugu. More info and updates on this event are available on River to River facebook group.

Cool surf flicks The fifth annual Ombak Bali Surf Film Festival returns this August to give a peek into the hidden side of the surfing world. Take the journey from Galapagos to Alaska and Japan with pro surfer Dave Rastovich on his mission to protect dolphins and whales, or follow the highly-charged adventure of South African surfers in the shark-infested waters of Wild Coast. Both and more presentations will be screened at the festival on August 23-25 at sunset, on the sandy front yard of La Plancha in Seminyak, between Double Six and Gado-Gado. All screenings and musical performances are open to public free of charge. More details on the festival are available at www.ombakbali.com

kristian fernandez rock bar | friday-saturday 20-21 JuLY
Roots: One may need a few pages to really tap into the depth of this artist’s roots and how far reaching they’ve become. Brought up in Australia, Kristian Hernandez, better known to some as Heavy Boogie, has truly found the world to be his playground. From his European and Asian heritage, to his lifelong experience of traveling, his musical influences and personal creativity seem to have no specific beginning or end. His spectrum of sound as a DJ, turntablist, producer, and musician is as colorful and broad as the term ‘music’ itself.
Sounds: Deep house, soul, funk, garage, Latin house, Afro house, hip hop, breakbeat…
Where You Might Have Heard Him
www.beatmag.com
Kristian now resides in Manila, Philippines. It is there, he created a very unique and exclusive club night dedicated to different art forms of dance, and thus far the only event of its kind. Before hosting Australia’s longest running hip-hop/soul/funk/R&B radio show Blackbeat, his turntablism talents won him the Australian DMC Championships Queensland in 1999, and again in 2000. One might also have run into his unique style and sound if you were ever lucky enough to experience world renowned clubs such as The End in London, Cielo in New York, or Sydney’s famous Loft.
Why See Him Imagine when you take a visual stroll through epic photos from places all over the world, and how interesting it is to see something so unique and different. Now imagine that experience, but instead of sight, through sound instead. That is what Kristian Hernandez can bring to a night. He’s played alongside massive acts like Moby, Basement Jaxx, Felix Da Housecat, as well with artists like Mix Master Mike, De La Soul and even The Black Eyed Peas. Those were just to name a few… Is that not enough variety for you?

Dave Winnel sky garden | saturday 21 JuLY Roots: Is he soon to be a serious powerhouse representing Sydney, Australia, in a big way around the world? If he isn’t well on his way already, it is inevitable for Dave Winnel if he doesn’t slow down. Although, he isn’t showing any sign of decelerating any time soon. Dave moves at such a speed pushing forward, his past is blurry. A true modern tech-guru of Ableton Live, he has brought DJing to another level with his live sets and technological creativity. Put DJing off to the side and you still have a wealth of successful studio productions and remixes which furthers his claim to pushing the boundaries and doing things his own unique way.
Sounds: Tech house, electro house, progressive house, club!
Where You Might Have Heard Him
www.beatmag.com
If you’re into DJs bursting with raw energy, chances are that they probably have a few of Dave Winnel tracks in their record crate (CD case). Whether it be his fresh and creative live sets as a DJ that are anything but predictable, or his wide array of productions/remixes, there are so many ways that you’ve probably heard and moved some part of your body to this guys’ music! He has gained support from behemoths such as Bass Kleph and Roger Sanchez, and has released tracks on big labels like OneLove, Vacation, and the hugely popular Vicious Records.
Why See Him Dave reached all the way to a number two position this past year on the ARIA top 100 Club Chart with his remix of “Example”. We also checked out his recent release on Vicious Records, titled “Ready”, and were quite impressed. It’s safe to say that there most likely won’t be any regrets in spending an evening out with Dave Winnel, unless your afraid of blowing off some steam and having some serious fun.

Rob Garza w bali | saturday 21 JuLY
Roots:
Garza spent a lot of time during his formative years in Juarez, Mexico, his mother’s hometown. It’s a chaotic place, he said, which, along with his multi-ethnic roots, have contributed immensely to his musical preferences. When his father, an Illinois cop, got a job in Connecticut and moved the family there, a new cultural landscape was opened to Garza. He was exposed to the growing electronic scene so he bought his first synthesizer and immersed himself right away in producing and sampling music. He has always been influenced by global music; mariachi, old soul, rock, punk and electronica to name a few.
Sounds:
Electronica
Where You Might Have Heard Him
With Eric Hilton, Garza formed the Thievery Corporation with seven studio albums, countless compilations, singles and remixes under their belt to date. He and Hilton have also worked and performed with big names like Sir Paul McCartney, Perry Farrell, David Byrne, and Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips.
www.beatmag.com
Why See Him
Garza includes many political messages in his tracks which makes him stand out from most DJs. He is also ever evolving which makes his work and performances boundless in their imagination. Garza is known to deliver a mixture of rock, breaks, jazz, future-bossa, dub and psychedelic sounds in his set. We can’t help but to label his music: exciting. Plus, Thievery Corporation... need we say more? This month Rob Garza is coming to W Retreat and Spa in Seminyak for the SPF 2012 music festival where he headlines alongside Jason Bentley, music director of KCRW Los Angeles. Besides DJing on regular basis, Bentley is widely known as music coordinator for blockbuster movies like the Matrix trilogy, The Chronicle of Riddick: Dark Fury and Tron: Legacy.

Justice potato head | thursday 26 july
Roots:
Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay met at a party in 2003 and quickly found that they shared a strange liking to soft rock bands like 10cc. The bond continued as they began producing music together that eventually landed them a record deal with Ed Banger records. In 2006 the label released Justice’s first international hit from a remix of Simian they made in 2003 which at that point was re-titled ‘We Are Your Friends’, and their ride to fame began.
Sounds: Electroclash, French house
www.beatmag.com
Where You Might Have Heard them
Since being signed by Ed Banger, Justice has put out remixes for heavy weights like Britney Spears, N.E.R.D, Fatboy Slim, and Daft Punk. Meanwhile ‘We Are Your Friends’ produced more recognition for them when the video was picked as the MTV Europe Music Awards 2006 Best Video. More high profile nominations followed in 2007. First, “D.A.N.C.E”, a track from their EP with the same title got nominated for Video of The Year at the MTV Music Awards. Then they received a Video Star award at the European Music Awards in Munich and were crowned the Best French Act of the Year. In 2008 Justice was up for more awards for “D.A.N.C.E” and their debut album †, both won Best Dance Recording which and Best Electronic/Dance Album respectively at the 50th Grammy Awards.
Why See them
It’s not every day that this island has musicians of Justice’s caliber. With so many amazing tracks and remixes as well as a solid venue known for epic parties, expect great things from both Justice and Potato Head.

ARI LASSO AKASAKA | friday 27 JuLY Roots: Ari Bernardus Lasso, or Ari Lasso to a multitude of fans, grew up on the Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart, Queen, The Police, and‌ John Denver. After moving around with his family as a child, Lasso finally settled in Surabaya. He then chose to go to SMAN 2 Surabaya high school which he believed was the right place to nurture his passion in music. Sure enough he met like-minded boys there and dedicated his high school years to play in a band. The music craze continued in college, and a few semesters in, Lasso finally struck gold when he met Ahmad Dhani who asked him to join what would become the mighty Dewa 19.
Sounds: Pop rock
Where You Might Have Heard Him
www.beatmag.com
Lasso reached the pinnacle of the Indonesian music scene with Dewa 19 who defined a generation of Indonesian youth in the last couple of decades of the last century. Lasso and the boys won Best New Comer and Best Album awards from BASF in 1993 for their debut effort Kangen. When Lasso quit Dewa 19 due to personal reason in 1999, many were ready to write him off. But he returned a year later as a solo artist and won Best Pop Male Vocalist from the Indonesian Music Awards and Sharp. Since then, he has been a mainstay on Indonesian music charts with his many radio-friendly hit songs.
Why See Him After twenty years in the business, five albums with Dewa 19 and four on his own, Ari Lasso is currently considered a legend of the Indonesian music scene. He’s always been the voice of Dewa 19 to long-time fans. Admirers of his later works know him as a versatile musician who has a knack for deep yet melodic pop rock. This month Lasso is coming to Bali, fresh out of a reunion concert of Dewa 19, to do what he does best. This is a chance to see a crooner in fine form.

Rob Soundz COCOON BEACH CLUB | SUNday 29 JuLY
Roots: No stranger at all to beautiful Bali and its lush and vibrant nightlife, Rob Stoutjesdijk has been moving dance floors around the island for some time. Rob might now call Bali home, but Rob Soundz was created during the late 90’s back in the Netherlands. Whether by fate or by accident, Rob volunteered for a Dutch radio station and fell in love with DJing, soon after leaving radio to perform for live crowds. A few years later he landed his first residency at a venue near Rotterdam, and he has since played in countries spanning the globe such as Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, France, Greece, Spain, New Zealand, Australia, and of course… Indonesia.
Sounds: From hard dance to chill out, trance to house, and everything else in between. Rob has a wide range of great sounds catering to different venues, crowds, and events.
Where You Might Have Heard Him
www.beatmag.com
Whether through his various “Signature Soundz” DJ mixes, or at countless venues around Bali, Rob Soundz has left his mark. He was a long time resident at the famous Sky Garden VIP Lounge. He’s no stranger to Tulip, and has also made appearances at Cocoon, Eikon, and many other great venues. You can check out a great collection of various DJ mixes on his Soundcloud page for a nice sample.
Why See Him Rob Soundz is known for having a solid connection with any crowd and takes pride in that unique connection that takes place on a dance floor. With a strong sense of atmosphere and giving people what they want, mixed with his own innovation, he has made a name for himself. Check him out for yourself and enjoy!

soul clap sos supper club | SUNday 5 august Roots: Soul Clap is Eli Goldstein and Charlie Levine, who share an affinity with old pop, soul and RnB tunes. They met when they were still teenagers playing at parties around the Boston rave scene. In the early 2000s Eli who played a lot of UK garage with New York house mixed in and Charlie who leaned toward disco house with New York vocal house began playing together which lead to the formation of Soul Clap which blends their respective individual styles.
Sounds: Electronic
www.beatmag.com
Where You Might Have Heard them The Sound Clap has been consistently on their way up since playing at underground parties in Boston and churning out bootlegs between 2005-2007. By 2008 they had been included as one of Boston’s finest DJs. But what proved to be their biggest breakthrough came in 2010. They toured extensively all over Europe, both North and South America and Japan. One of their more accomplished productions, “Extravaganza” was picked as one of the year’s summer anthems by Mixmag and DJ Mag’s top 10 tracks of the year. The boys also got voted for 16th place in Resident Advisor’s annual DJ poll. That year they also put together a mix tape which got released to a limited audience. That tape got rereleased this year under the Wolf+Lamb label and became, Efunk , the highly anticipated debut album of Soul Clap who prior to that has been labeled by many as the producer’s producers.
Why See Him In their debut album Efunk (2012) which stands for Everybody Freaky Under Nature’s Kingdom. The Soul Clap boys aspire to bring back bass lines to the dance floor and change the way people dance. “We want winding ‘n grinding and romance. If people aren’t getting laid at the end of the night we’re not doing our job,” they said. We like their style.

the beat party
12 ANNIVERSARY
T
he Beat Party rolled into town like a freight train from hell last Friday night. It was Friday the 13th after all, and with some epic mountains to climb before the party could begin, like finishing the space so it could be used at all and an unfortunate accident with a band member that meant they couldn’t play, the show did go on. Two hours late, but in great Beat fashion, we got it all together and across the line in the nick of time. The Sky Dome had a total wow-factor by the time the doors were eventually opened. Punters were being entertained with a free flow from Heineken, Absolut and DeKuyper right from 9pm when the party officially began in another part of Sky and were called down to the Dome when we were ready to go. That was at approx 11pm (sorry folks for the late start) and without a band we had to rearrange the awards show etc. Wow, the things that happen behind the scenes. James Sullivan cranked up the brand new DJ booth and at last The Beat Awards 2012 were presented. With a gaping hole that you could’ve flown a Boeing 747 through above the DJ booth, the neighbours must’ve been wondering what happened, but Patrick Oliver came on and slammed a totally rocking set of trance and vocal house that pushed the new Sky Dome system to the max and the party to the limit. In the end it was smiles all round and punters were leaving after a rather massive night. Little did they know the miracle that had just been performed.

s far as summer parties go, Potato Head set the bar pretty damn high with their Summer Opening Party. The party opened with support from Stevie-G and Lady Flic on a smaller stage to the side, who filled the festive daytime atmosphere with some mighty fine tunes. But it was all just prelude to the main event, Fatboy Slim! The visuals were immaculate and the lights looked they came from the DJ god’s themselves, as for the sound, well; everybody had to bounce to those all too familiar tracks. The crowd was wild and positively energetic and with more shows like this, the world would probably be a better place. Additional support by Stuart Mac and Dipha only made an already wicked night better.

What is interesting, and borderline hysterical, is that they have found a collection of men that could not better exemplify a new social paradigm. The cooking bit is where it starts to fall apart as some of them seem to think that if they are wearing the right designer t-shirt, girls will be impressed with cheese on toast; as long as it was cooked by a HOT guy with the right intentions.
A
nyone who has seen the most recent show to hit our satellite screens, Hot Guys Who Cook, will undoubtedly have an opinion about it. Seems to me to be an Asian comedy of sorts that highlights a social phenomenon that has slowly been creeping into our consciousness, at least for those of us who live in Asia.
Whatever those intentions may be. There is something irksome (cringe-worthy really) about watching these guys describing themselves as hot. Some of them are, no doubt, some are a little creepy in their smugness and their choice of tank tops.
Seeing this collection of metro-sexual, uber cool dudes that call themselves the “Hot Guys Who Cook”, brings it into the glaring spotlight.
Mysteriously none of them seem to have much real cooking ability, which seems to negate the whole point of the show. Celebrity chefs these guys are not, seems they got the job because they have some basic knowledge in the kitchen and they fit someone’s profile of “hot”. I suspect the creator of the show sees himself as a member of this new clique.
The new Asian man aspires to be well travelled, well educated, doing his best to shake off an Asian accent and morph into a truly Global citizen.
No doubt they have their fan base, and it is no surprise the show appears on DIVA, the chick channel, rather than the foodie networks.
The show sports a group of men in their 20’s who wear an assortment of clothes that characterize pretty much the whole social strata from the butch builder look to the Gap man to the Ralph Lauren laid back loafer. It is a kind of hetero version of The Village people.
Mostly it is striking that this new breed of young Asian man is one we all know (hello editor). Some, probably most, have mixed parentage, they all qualify as possible TV spokespeople, which is now a real job now and they are to be found on our own shores.
While a few Asian accents remain intact, there are also Australian, British and the all too familiar international American accents, coined by this writer as the “MTV Asia” accent.
Power to the men who have embraced the new Asian man tag, it is not only the economy that seems to be outstripping the West, it appears women of the world might be looking this way for the next sex symbol as well. Will the next Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp, George Clooney, be Asian? Why in the hell not. Hot or not? Entirely subjective.

ROBIN LIM Homegrown & Well Known:
www.beatmag.com
Interview by Rudolf Dethu
Ibu Robin believes that love heals. Since 2003 she has volunteered to help mothers in Bali deliver babies (via the Bumi Sehat Foundation). It wasn’t easy, especially in the beginning. Lots of opposition from the existing medical profession. Very little money. Lack of staff. Poor facilities. Just big love. But things have become a bit easier since she was awarded the 2011 CNN Hero of the Year. She deserves it. Absolutely.
What kind of an impact has the prestigious “CNN Hero 2011” status had? How is the public reaction so far – locally and globally? The people here in Indonesia are so proud. All over the world, people are so happy and supportive and also cried. I had hundreds of emails… Bidans said they thought they were getting sick. But then they remembered that on the CNN night, they were screaming with joy, so long and hard, that they hurt their throats! It is as if we occupied health care as a human right. We occupied love on CNN. I have usually two times per week, visits from bidans. Thirty to 100 coming at one time, by airplane and by bus, from all over Indonesia. They come because they are excited that one of them, a midwife, is the hero. They come to learn all about the healing power of love. I share with them all I can about gentle childbirth, about living a life in peace. I Love the fact that they are so excited. What are you doing right now, work wise? Yesterday, I was on my knees (although I have a broken foot) receiving a baby girl into the world. Ibu Ayuk and Wayan Wartawa are so in love with their tiny three kilo daughter, and so am I. Day and night, I still deliver babies. I still do what I can for the Bumi Sehat patients. I teach midwives about gentle peaceful birth more and more. We just released our newest
Being popular means that twice this year pregnant unwed moms saw me on TV and took buses to Bali, from other islands to find me. We live here in a society that has no tolerance for single motherhood, so I dream of making a single mom’s home, a centre where they can live and learn and grow, with their babies. This I will not begin, until we have built the new clinic. Moving ahead in baby steps, steadily.

I would like to share my deepest belief: That love heals. Just a few weeks ago at Bumi Sehat Ibu Rusmini was having her second baby. Minutes before the birth the baby’s heart rate fell to 40 beats per minute. Normal is 120 to 160 beats per minute—as The Beat you know how important it is to “keep the beat”, so to speak. If a baby’s heart falls so low, it means he is dying, even before being born. We gave the mother oxygen, changed her position and told her she must push very strong, so that the baby would come out quickly, and we could help him with CPR, but the baby was not being born fast enough. The mother needed more strength, and we needed a miracle to save this child. Bidan (midwife) Maria, from Timor Leste remembered our “secret recipe for miracles”, she said “I love you” to the mother. And Ibu Rusmini smiled, and we all shouted, “I love you!”. We checked the Baby’s heart beat, and it was up to 120, normal! We gave the mother love, and she had the strength to push her baby out into the light. Love truly saved this baby boy’s life.
book in Bahasa Indonesia: Ibu Alami. I just finished two new books: Eat Pray Doula and The Natural Family Planning Workbook… a Lifestyle of Nonviolence. I have a few books coming out this year in the Philippines in Tagalog, and in Italy, in Italian.
In May, I spent the International Day of the Midwife in the Philippines with 900 midwives, at the annual Philippine League of Midwives congress. Two weeks ago, I was with 1,500 midwifery students in Jakarta, they were amazing. They said I inspired them, but THEY inspire ME! I hear there’s also another Bumi Sehat Clinic in Aceh? What’s that story? Is it still going? Oh, yes. Bumi Sehat Aceh is going strong. Last April, our area in Aceh suffered 33 earthquakes in 24 hours, the largest of which were 8.1 and 8.6! The panic was terrible, all over the region. We feel so blessed, as no lives were lost. Our team stayed on, and evacuated all three surrounding villages to higher ground, as we feared a tsunami, the epicentre being just offshore from our Bumi Sehat site. There was no significant damage to our clinic. Thank heavens. We have a new youth centre out there, and a big organic garden. Half my heart is in Aceh. Any last nagging words? The CNN Award money, all $300,000 is in a special account set aside for the building of the new Bumi Sehat clinic in Bali. (The one we are in is leased, and the lease is finished in three years.) We do have the land, and we are working to make the very most earthquake safe and efficient, and beautiful plans possible. It’s a lot of work making a new clinic. $300,000 is not enough for the clinic we need to build, but it’s an amazing start, and our savings are growing. The CNN accolades have brought Bumi Sehat into the limelight, which really helps me keep the funds flowing toward us. The downside is that many people think that just because we won, we don’t need anymore funding. Quite the opposite, operational funds are rising, as our patient load increases, with our popularity.

Two young Aussie mates learn to surf on Kuta Beach.
www.beatmag.com
I’ve
been surfing once or twice around Bali and Perth, but I never really got the hang of it. I had been thinking about taking a surfing lesson and had been told that the Odyssey Surf School was a great place to start and build some confidence. I told my friend Simo to come down with me to see what it would be like. The price for our semi-private lesson was $45 U.S., which meant that it was just the two of us with one instructor. The prices range from $35 to $60 for individuals per day and higher prices for more experienced surfers. We got our rashies on, met our instructor, Rudi, and headed down to the beach. He gave us two long boards, since we are beginners and we put
our boards down on the sand. From there we started to practice the steps of getting up on the board. After some stretching we got into the water, and Rudi told us that we are going to start off with some small waves to gain our balance with the new boards. I get the hang of it straight away because it’s a little similar to skate boarding. Once we’re ready he starts to push us into the left of the wave so we’re side on to the wave, this was the most exhilarating experience of the day. After the three hour session was finished, the school provides shower facilities, towel service, and they even offer photos of you surfing for an extra charge. I will definitely return! [Jon]

Bit of Green and a touch of Rock That’s the story Green Rock is a clothing brand that has been around for a while displaying a distinctly cool, vintage kind of style without being too over the top. Not for the kids, but folks that want a well rounded casual but still let’s say, edgy look about their persona. They are now stocking garments in a few classy, alternative surf and street boutiques around town, a couple of them being Oberoi’s Drifter and Kuta’s Somewhere. The fabric used in their garments is soft to the touch and strong to the wear. Just arrived in store this week are the new printed shorts that are looking pretty stormsome. Gentle Spirit
Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder
E
veryone knows surfy rock is dead and Jack Johnson is the one who killed it with those stupid feel good lyrics, that annoyingly toned waterman physique and the non-threatening, infuriatingly likeable persona. Bastard. But hey, even the beach bars of Bali have almost stopped playing it now, so it must be about time for it to take on a new direction… Enter stage left Jonathan Wilson. Actually reading that passage again I’ve decided it might be a bit unfair to lump Wilson in with the ‘surf rock’ moniker since there’s nothing overtly surfy about the scruffy Northern California resident. Having said that, Gentle Spirit is absolutely the kind of record that’s guaranteed to pop up on some nostalgic 70s revival surfy flick, bathed in fluttering flutes and woozy piano that keeps the whole thing nicely idling along in the slow lane. So slow in fact, upon first listen I had to check I hadn’t accidentally ingested a couple of valiums, the fragile vocals and languid aura lulling me into a state of blissful near paralysis atop my sofa. “Natural Rhapsody” drifts along sounding distinctly Pink Floydish, complete with spacey guitars and the kind of wandering five minute solo that Neil Young would be proud of, while the stripped back “Can We Really Party Today?” goes all Thoreau with Wilson nattering on about beavers and ragged rivers, his guitar and voice getting a rare chance to shine without the psychedelic clutter of most of the other tracks. “Can we really party today/with all that’s going on” he whispers lazily, leaving one wondering exactly what is going on up in Laurel Canyon (Wilson’s home) other than repacking the bong and chopping some wood out back.
The obvious standout track on Gentle Spirit is the stunning “Desert Raven”, which once you’ve got past the first 45 seconds of wonky electronica becomes a soaring beauty of a song, the descending riff effortlessly falling off of Wilson’s fretboard in an intoxicating slice of hazy 70s reverie. At 90 minutes the more impatient listeners may find Gentle Spirit a bit too drawn out, but if you’ve got nowhere else to be then it’s the perfect Sunday soundtrack. Dan Ashcroft

Are your kids still on school holiday and starting to get bored? Bring them along to watch these funny pre-historic animals. Need to have some testosterone filled escapism? The Dark Knight is back. And for you girls who are on a shopping spree with your girlfriends in the mall, stop by to flirt with a handsome doctor on the big screen. Check out www.21cineplex.com or your local DVD store for more.
Ice Age: Continental Drift Animation, Adventure, Comedy. Directors: Steve Martino, Mike Thurmeire. Writers: Jason Fuchs, Michael Berg. Cast: Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Denis Leary, Queen Latifah. Who can forget the funny pre-historic squirrel, Scrat from the Ice Age films? Well in this sequel, a small act causes a world-changing consequence of which the whole world was split into what we call continents. Amidst this incident, Manny, Diego and Sid are drifting on an iceberg to the vast ocean and must find their way back. Fourth installation? Might be boring? Maybe yes, maybe no. With some new characters and a solid cast, we might not have enough of these pre-historic characters yet.
The Dark Knight Rises Action, Adventure, Crime. Director: Christopher Nolan. Writers: Jonathan Nolan, David S. Goyer. Cast: Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Liam Neeson. Director Christopher Nolan might be the only filmmaker who ever directed an Oscar-winning superhero movie. To close the trilogy of the Dark Knight AKA Batman, this third and final installation may be the most anticipated movie of the year by the whole world, and it’s not an exaggeration. Saw the trailer already? It gave us goosebumps. Rumor has it that what’s been shown in trailer barely scratches the surface of it. You will be blown away by the story, the twists, the action, the excellent cast, and technical aspects all put together in 164 minutes of film that you will most likely remember for years to come!
A Little Bit Of Heaven Comedy, Drama, Romance. Director: Nicole Kassell. Writer: Gren Wells. Cast: Kate Hudson, Gael Garcia Bernal, Kathy Bates, Peter Dinklage. Marley (Kate Hudson) is a young and lovely woman but can be irreverent sometimes. She’s also afraid of opening herself to love and commitment and uses her wits to pretend nothing is ever serious when it comes to men. When she has a life-changing visit with her new doctor, Julian (Gael Garcia Bernal), both of them are sent to an eye-opening romance with mutual discovery. Pretty much your typical romantic comedy, so don’t have any expectations, but this might still be a good date or girlsnight-out kind of movie to be accompanied with popcorn to share.

C
hang Fee Ming, a Malaysian painter who is well-known as a water colorist, has many experiences in the fine art scene. As a painter, he expresses his mind and soul.
In the winter of 2008, he found himself in the dark, wet, and cold underground sewer tunnels of the Louvre Museum, Paris, where a director friend was shooting a movie. That was so far from his comfort zone and the unfriendly atmosphere triggered his darkest thoughts. It resulted in a body of work that was so Komaneka Fine Art Gallery, unlike any that he has produced before. Jl. Monkey Forest, Ubud, Bali. T: 976 090 Back in his elements, Chang recovered his joie-de vivre when he sought refuge in his two favorite places on earth: the North-Eastern coast of Peninsular, Malaysia and the island of Bali. He has now returned with a series that captures his rich encounters with people of these lands. This time, Chang Fee Ming has an opportunity to exhibit his latest exhibition titled “From South China Sea … to Mount Agung” located at Komaneka Fine Art Gallery, Ubud. It’s actually the second sequel exhibition that was previously held in Kuala Lumpur. The exhibition will run through August 16.

Rama spA a t Look:
Despite being in temporary quarters while the hotel gets a facelift, two rooms and a breezy verandah have been tastefully converted into treatment rooms. As with all the other aspects of this spa, they have done this in a completely professional way. Everything is sparkling clean, smells good, bathrooms are spotless and scented. Lovely.
www.beatmag.com
Feel:
As part of a professional group owned by Ramayana, the professionalism in this operation is clear from the start. There’s no messing about, everyone is lovely and crisply efficient from front of house staff to the well-trained therapists. I chose a lymphatic massage, one of the signature treatments and I will go back again. It was a wonderfully therapeutic treatment that begins with reflexology that gets into the areas corresponding to major organs, and then continued with long stroke and pressure point massage.
K u t a S e a v i e w
Ingredients:
The commitment to authentic, natural products runs through this spa as many of the better ones. In the case of my treatment it wasn’t so much about the oils used, although it was nice and not heavily scented. Other treatments include scrubs and hot oil treatments. It’s simple in this small area but the size doesn’t detract.
Magic:
What sets this spa apart from many standalone spas is the professional approach to the treatments. Everything they can offer in this space is delivered by confident, professional therapists with a thorough knowledge of the craft and a pleasant approach to hygiene and cleanliness. Mid-priced, it is easy to recommend this spa if you happen to find yourself near Kuta beach.

As its name suggests, Villa sunset is a sanctuary you want to be in when the sun dips into the West.
Villa Sunset at Puri Tirta Villas
Jalan Sekar Ganda Mayu 3 Tanjung Benoa, Bali. http://www.villanabali.com/villa_sunset.html
Location
Villa Sunset is located in Tanjung Benoa, on the south eastern part of Bali, where the lifestyle moves at a less frenetic pace than the Kuta or Seminyak districts. Yet Tanjung Benoa isn’t short on excitement as there are numerous water activities to do along the coast. There is also a thriving culinary scene along the main road for quality dining opportunities.
www.beatmag.com
Looks
Villa Sunset is a 650 square meter waterfront retreat with an open layout which minimally divides you from the beautiful natural surroundings. The commodious main building boasts a mixture of traditional Indonesian and tropical designs. Efficient use of space and high ceilings make each quarter look uncluttered and even roomier than they already are. The highlight of the property must be the outdoor area that consists of a well-groomed garden with a large pool, an open lounge, a gazebo and a magnificent view of tranquil Benoa bay.
Atmosphere
There’s nothing quite like revelling in a restful picturesque villa at sunset in Bali. Everything
about Sunset villa is centered on the breathtaking view of the secluded Benoa coastline. The villa also provides direct access to the calm water out front which is perfect for water activities like parasailing and jet skiing.
Features
Sunset Villas comes with all the standard features of luxurious private villas. Additionally there are two large bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, on the ground floor. An even larger master bedroom is situated upstairs with its private porch that overlooks the Benoa bay. As guests will most likely be spending more time outside, the garden is arguably the most important feature of the property. It includes a 20x6 m swimming pool and a Jacuzzi, a gazebo that is situated close to the coastline. A small motor boat and some kayaks are available for guests who want to further explore the surrounding water. The villa also provides free eight-hour-daily transportation for guests.

DJ Ferry Corsten returned to Jakarta; this time with a slew of DJ friends in tag. Corsten introduced a new concept dubbed as Full on Ferry, where he acted as a host for performances by other DJs in a single entertainment package which included lightings and visual. The high stage, spectacular lighting, and big screen brought a distinct look to the show at X2 club. Through out the show Ferry Corsten, Sied van Riel, Kyau & Albert minus Giuseppe mesmerized the trance music lovers in back to back performances. What an entertaining night!

Friday 6 July
Soundbox Beach Life eading north of Monas always arrives with a moment’s apprehension. You never know what’s going to happen generally in this town but going north is guaranteed to unravel a few feathers. French DJs JIDAX were in the house, fourth floor to be precise, and just as we arrived, they were taking to the decks. Cameras flashing all around the stage as the guys started up a three hour set that began with an almost commercial leaning with twists and turns, later arriving into a deeper progressive zone that had every head in the house nodding and swaying in the beachside themed ambience. One part of JIDAX, Le Jide was standing up on the decks a few times belting out his signature “Let me see your hands up high” and “This is the best club in the world” and right then, he wouldn’t have been too far wrong. Great set, great place, and memorable moments.
